okay I'm gonna talk abt more chapter 4 stuff.. this time about prototype's previous identity.. ch4 spoilers and also a theory below..

people theorized 1006 was elliot, which was recently disproven in the chapter 4 tape where poppy refers to elliot as her dad and wishes he were there. in the same tape she addresses prototype as a completely different person. also recall that elliot died in the 90s, meanwhile prototype met theo in 1989. so yeah, they aren't the same person

I've also seen people say rich is prototype, which cannot be true either. in a ch4 tape he speaks to one of the employees under his supervision. the kid mentions his coworkers joking about him going missing. before the bbi, it would not make sense for this to be a common rumor at the company, which means this tape had to happen after harley was hired in 1990; at a time when the company would have a reason to silence people

prototype existed in 1989 at the minimum, but considering he says "it's always been about you and me" to poppy, he's likely the prototype of HER. she's elliots daughter, she died in the 60s, meaning prototype was probably created around that time as well.

this means that rich can't be the prototype because he was human long after prototype was made

if you want my take on who prototype truly is, i'd say his identity doesn't necessarily matter. i don't mean to say his origins aren't important, just that his name and specific role in the past probably doesn't mean anything in the long run. i've never believed he was elliot or rich, and maybe in the future i'll be proven wrong but for now i'll tell you the theory i've had since june of last year

elliot's daughter dies in the 60s. he divorced his wife in 1930, so his daughter is probably in her 30s when she dies. she gets sick or injured, maybe she's actively dying or already dead by the time elliot begins his research. he looks for ways to bring her back, but it doesn't work on the rats (as he mentioned a note in the 2nd chapter)

so what does he do? he tries it on something bigger as he said he would: a human. of course he's not going to try this experimental method on his own daughter, even if she's already dead, so he finds someone else to use it on. we know that elliot wasn't evil or anything, so it's unlikely he killed anybody to use for the experiment. considering the orphanage isn't open yet (it opened in the 70s, not the 60s), prototype probably wasn't an orphan child either. if i run with my simple version of the theory, elliot may have dug up a body in a graveyard and used that. maybe a fresh one, who knows. he tried it, it worked, then he revived his daughter with the same method.

this is likely what harley wanted to know about in the chapter 3 tape (the "i learn something new about you every day" one), and also what prototype is asking harley to figure out in the ch4 tape they're both in. in that case, sawyer never actually figured out how to revive people with the poppy substance. sure, he can transfer people into the toys, but he can't bring anybody back to life

more reason to believe prototype and poppy are of the same "batch" is because it seems they are the only two who don't need food. it's outright stated about him in the ch1 trailer, and insinuated with her saying the "toys will starve otherwise" when she's talking about how nasty them eating humans is. she refers to them, not herself. her and prototype are probably the only 2 who were ever brought back from the dead, which circles back around to his monologue and gives meaning to the "it's always been about you and me, poppy. what we are". when i heard him say that i felt like my theory was lowk confirmed 😭😭

How to Burn Your Own CDs - a guide for Windows users

Are you--yes, you!--tired of paying money to stupid shit like spotify for your music? Do you hate the way that the music industry takes almost all the profit that bands make through streaming and leaves them with pennies? Have you ever wanted to fire up that old CD-Radio in the corner of your bedroom, only to be stopped because all you have on CD is Weezer's blue album and a copy of Kidz Bop 16 that you don't remember buying? Well this guide just might be for you!

Materials you'll need:

A computer. Can't do it without this one.

A CD drive. It can be internal or external, but you'll need one either way. You can find them at Office Depot for fairly cheap and I've heard that some Walmarts carry them.

A pack of CD-Rs. CD-Rs, or CD Recordables, come in packs of 20, 50, or 100. A proper 100-pack should cost you no more than $30, so unless there's some special shortage in your area, don't buy from anywhere selling them at a markup. CD blanks are literally 50c a piece.

CD cases. Sold wherever CD-Rs are, but you can also find these at thrift stores pretty easily.

A sharpie or some kind of permanent marker

Software you'll need:

Jdownloader. You can acquire mp3s through Bandcamp if you're dedicated to righteousness, but for everyone else, install jdownloader or some other kind of open-source download program. I will be proceeding as if you have jdownloader available.

Windows media player. This should open automatically when you insert a CD-R into your CD drive.

Fre:ac audio converter. This is only for the occasion that you encounter OPUS or mp4a files that cannot be interpreted by your CD player.

Note: If you're very determined not to download software onto your computer, you can use free youtube downloaders and audio converters, but these are subject to viruses and other issues such as download speed. I will be proceeding as if you have the programs I listed.

The process:

Decide what you want to burn--anything goes, but keep in mind the time limit on your CD-Rs. Most will record 90 minutes or less.

Open jdownloader, switch to the linkgrabber tab, then paste youtube links in any order until you have all the music you want. I'd personally recommend doing it song-by-song instead of a full album stream, because a massive file will require a lot of work to separate back into searchable tracks.

De-select all files except audio on the right-hand side options menu.

Make a folder inside the music folder of your laptop and label it with the name of your mix CD.

In the properties tab of each song on jdownloader, change the destination folder to the folder you've just created.

Hit "start all downloads".

Once finished, open each folder. If everything is an .mp3 or a .wav, skip the next 2 steps.

Open Fre:ac audio converter to convert all audio files that aren't .mp3 or .wav into .mp3 or .wav.

Drop the converted files next to the unconverted files in your folder. If you wish, you can delete the originals to make the folder easier to browse.

Put your blank CD-R into the CD drive. If external, plug in your CD drive first or the tray will refuse to open.

Windows media player will open automatically. On the right-hand side, you will see the tracklist of your CD-R (which should be blank). On the left, you will see the audio that your computer is able to find in the music folder. Put your selected tracks IN ORDER onto the tracklist.

Listen to the beginning and ending of each track to make sure there isn't a significant time gap. This also prevents accidentally burning a youtuber's stupid outro if you missed it before.

When satisfied, hit "start burn".

On an external drive, the CD tray will open upon completion. You can reinsert it to ensure that the burning went smoothly.

Once satisfied, remove the CD from your drive. With your sharpie or permanent marker, write the name of the album on the front, then store safely inside a CD case.

I am a long-time fan of you and I know you care a lot about social issues. When I saw your analysis on the HH designs, I feel you missed two major aspects of Alastor's design that are suspect. One, the 'deer' aspect of Alastor is a reference to a Native American Cannibal spirit which name is taboo and so I won't type it here. Though the creature itself isn't associated with deer, the common depiction of them is a cannibalistic deer-monster. Second, the 'magic symbols' Alastor uses are straight up Voodoo/Vodoun symbols. Not used in the right context or with an actual voudoun priest/priestess serving as a sensitivity reader. I bring these up, because I feel your analysis lacked a lot of context. If you answer this, thank you in advance.

Ah, you might be able to help me on this, I've heard before that the creature in question is taboo to mention or depict, but I've looked around multiple times for a source on the taboo. Which indigenous cultures is it that have the taboo on the creature? It's part of multiple nations' folklore, do they all collectively have the same taboo on the creature, or do they have differing stances on it?

I have seen this claim of taboo repeated across the internet, it's on various poorly-sourced mythology blogs and it gets repeated by TikTokers and in social media discussions, but I haven't been able to find any official sources from Algonquian-speaking indigenous nations, whose cultures originate the stories, asking that outsiders not discuss or represent the creature.

I've been able to find anecdotes shared by people that their elders have told them not to say the creature's name at certain times or in certain circumstances, because it supposedly draws the creature (or the evil it represents) closer, but I've not been able to find any strong indications that that taboo extends to non-members of the culture, or people speaking outside of the nation's lands, or on the Internet.

I saw a few people who identified as Ojibwe make fun of the idea that the word needs to be censored in text especially, with one of them calling it "colonizer nonsense." According to them, the rule they grew up with is not to speak the creature's name out loud in certain circumstances, and they claimed that it was considered significantly more taboo (at least in their communities) to whistle at night, since that would call the creature. Again, this is all anecdotal, but better sources seem scarce on the ground.

Do you have a link or a source, or some knowledge of which nations or organizations are calling for the taboo to be respected by non-indigenous people? The main reason I did not bring up this subject is because I simply cannot find any good sources on which to base a criticism. I don't want to spread the idea that First Nations people are calling for a taboo on depictions or mentions of a creature from their culture unless I can positively confirm that they are actually doing that.

Similarly, if you have a solid source from an authoritative Vodoun practitioner criticizing Alastor's design, I'd love to read it, it might come in handy someday. Not asking you to do my research for me, obviously, just that if you have one to hand or off the top of your head, you'd be doing me a favor.

As I say in the video itself, it was meant to be a fairly short project, and I did not have a lot of research time available. If I'm going to broach a critique on Alastor's design as it relates to Vodoun practises and culture, I need to study some primary sources from those cultures outlining what they consider to be best practises and faux-pas when it comes to depiction and use in pop culture. It's maybe a subject for a future video some day, but not until I've done the reading, and I would probably make it a much broader discussion than just Alastor and Hazbin Hotel.

You say this is a canon fic but [super specific thing that I don’t agree with] is included. What gives?

For the purposes of TLE, ‘canon’ means the original seven books. Everything else is dressing. I do include as canon a lot of the lore JKR provided in interviews while the books were being published (for example, James being a Chaser), however I tend to view all post-book authorial additions as mostly optional. I do use a fair amount of Pottermore in my story, but I do not keep up with new HP material, so it’s impossible to stay up to date with everything. For example, I tweaked the Animagus process somewhat to my liking as opposed to what is described in Pottermore. This is partly because I already had my version sketched out before that was published, and mostly because I did not like what was given on Pottermore.

I do not consider any of the films canon. If this alleged HBO show happens, I will not consider that canon. Video game? Not canon. I also simply do not know what the words ‘Cursed Child’ mean, as I am pretty sure this is from an alternate timeline in which I do not exist. Tra la la. :)

All of this to say: The seven books are the framework. However, I feel pretty strongly that within that framework there is room for many, many interpretations – particularly with regards to the Marauders era, about which we know so little. Just because my headcanon or characterization is different from yours (or vice versa!) doesn’t make it less canon. Similarly, just because something is not explicitly described in the seven books, doesn’t mean it is against canon for it to have happened in the background, unnoticed by Harry, or before the timeline of the seven books starts. Do you have any quick-and-dirty book/fic binding methods a terrified-of-failure novice could use to bang something out to get over the first collywobbling step of Actually Doing The Thing? (this may be something I've been meaning to ask for ages)

yes! I absolutely do! in my opinion the best quick-and-dirty bookbinding method is a no-glue pamphlet: you don't have to mess with glue or measuring or cutting anything, all you need is your text, some paper, a needle and thread. you can use the same needle to punch holes if you don't have an awl.

this is going to be a little long but that's because I'm going to write out some fairly detailed instructions for an A5 sized pamphlet. If you don't want detailed instructions and think you can glean the necessary info from photos, just skip to the photos! I've also linked tutorials.

for preparing the text to printing, in whatever software you use (word, libreoffice, gdocs, whatever) make sure your document is set to page size A5. make it look readable. then save as/export that document as a straight-paged PDF. now go to the bookbinder JS tool (https://momijizukamori.github.io/bookbinder-js/), and upload the PDF. source manipulation: none printer paper size: A4 display unit (you can ignore, or choose cm if it gives you anxiety that it automatically displays points) printer type: select single-sided or duplex accordingly* rotate paper: ignore flip on long side: check if you are printing duplex and if your duplex printer flips the paper on the long side page layout:  tick folio page scaling: original page positioning: centered ignore the rest flyfleaf: ignore signature format tick: standard signatures. in the length drop down, this depends on the type of pamphlet you are doing. for folio i generally find 4-5 pages per signature a comfortable thickness. if you have 6 whole A4 pages you can still do that as a single signature or you can split it into two signatures 3 pages each. wacky small layouts: ignore this signature info click the generate preview button to see what your PDF looks like imposed! I love this step especially when I'm doing quarto (A6) or octavo (A7) sized books generate output - click this to generate an imposed PDF

for A6 and A7 sized books the instructions are much the same, except for these you make sure the page size is A6 or A7 in your software, and then you choose quarto or octavo instead of folio. for signature length drop down I keep signature length to 1 for octavos typically and 2 for quartos, as this still refers to sheets of paper, and for octavo 1 sheet of A4 paper will turn into 4 smaller sheets in one signature once folded and cut.

*if you don't have a duplex printer you will have to manually turn the paper to print on the other side. I cannot be arsed with this so I bought a printer capable of duplex printing (I didn't have a printer anyway). if you already have a printer check what it can do as you might be surprised and go from there.

now to the pamphlets! you don't need a cover - I have one for the long stitch pamphlet but for the saddle stitch one I didn't bother and just made sure the first page had a title on it. you can always take a different piece of paper and print a cover on or or just use coloured cardstock and create a simple cover, but a cover is not necessary unless you're doing a long stitch pamphlet. all you need to do is to punch holes and start sewing. there are a few different stitch types below, I wouldn't say any of them are more difficult or easier than others, but they do look different so...pick one you like the look of and go from there?

french link stitch (even number of holes) in this one I used french link stitch which I typically use for thicker textblocks that i'm not planning to use tapes with as the french link gives it some robustness, I used it here because I had never done it before and wanted to try it out. I am planning to take these stitches out and re-sew this pamphlet with a cover now that I've found a suitable piece of transformer fanart to use as a cover:

My Spiritual Belief Lilim (Lilit-Witches): or those who exonerate the Goddess Lilith is not a new belief. My belief has been around for hundreds of years. Throughout all these years, many have not admitted to being Lilim out of fear of religious persecution. I still do not know if Lilim, who are commonly called daughters and sons of Samael and Lilith, is a religion or spiritual belief because I do not study religion. I'll call it a spiritual belief based on gnosis, alchemy, and compleat magick. I don't know if per se you can be a Christian and Lilim or another religion and Lilim. Like you can be a Luciferian Christian. I know if Christianity had a goddess, she would be Lilith. I am not a professional anything I wrote a book of shadows since I was 12 (2002). I abandoned it at 18 and recently picked it up again at 34. I realized I had very peaceful Satanic views as a teenager. I considered myself as a Neo-Pagan witch as a LaVeyan Satanist with a focus on Lilith as well. I called myself a Lilit-Witch, Lilit-Satanist. A more compassionate version of a Satanic Witch, I guess, with more positive undertones. A true focus on Satan and Lilith who can be found together in the Kabbalah (The Book of Enoch, The Necronomicon, there's endless books I want but can't afford The Kabbalah I have yet to learn about but want to. Once I abandoned my Book of Shadows, I also abandoned the need for these books back in 2008. I was manipulated into thinking my Satanic views were evil when they weren't they were just different.)

I do not mind at all that you use my ideals or take comfort in my ideals. I understand there are not many Lilit Witches out there to share information with, but please understand that most witches charge for even a slight interaction with them. I don't believe in charging people. I believe the spirit, especially the spirit of Lilith, should be free. Witchcraft is a serious practice that needs to be respected. Dealing with any of the spirits living, dead, demonic, angelic, etc., cannot be taken lightly. You are dealing with energies that can feel pain and emotion like yourself, demanding that a deity help you through a witch without showing it any appreciation is very disrespectful. The spirit is a playground of love, not a playground of tyranny, Satan himself wants everyone to be free. The relationship you form with your own spirit and the spirits of others are a result of the work and energies you put into these spirits.

Please understand that most LaVeyan Satanists are not theistic and do not practice or believe in witchcraft. Most Satanists are not witches and do not believe in magick, and most Satanists become Satanists to escape religion and scientifically unproven beliefs, Satan is an ideal to most Satanists that represents freedom from suppressive authority especially religious authority. Don't take me as an example of a good Satanist.

I am both a witch and a theistic Satanist who believes in both the LaVeyan idea of Satan and a spiritual Satan. My belief in Satan comes from a combination of Romantic Paganism and Judaistic beliefs. My concept of Satan may be completely different than someone else's concept of Satan. To me, he is the Jewish Archangel Sammael, who in Jewish Folklore is also the Roman God Mars, while Lucifer was the first man Adam to me personally.

I am not a priestess, and I understand people love Satan, and I may explain ways in which one could create their own relationship with the theistic Satan, but it's up to oneself to personally engage with Satan and find the correct rituals to do so. I very much want Satan to reach out to you, and I want Satan to feel loved by people. He deserves it and loves it when you communicate with him. Nevertheless, I cannot do this for you, I can tell you how I personally connect with him, yet your journey with him may be completely different.

Hi, dying over the ask you answered about Luo Binghe dying for Shen Yuan. I’m— just— aasjfjdjalla yea okay I can be normal about this (I cannot).

So now I’m just sitting here contemplating Shen Yuan’s reaction to that. He’d go feral. OG Bingge’s got nothing on this man on a mission to find Luo Binghe’s body so he can revive him. Bingmei may have kept Shen Qingqiu’s corpse for five years, but Shen Yuan is going to actually tear the entire realm apart.

In this au, I imagine there was never any implications in the original PIDW plot about the three realms being merged, but the first thought that popped in my head at thinking about a feral Shen Yuan scouring the universe for Luo Binghe? Shen Yuan will have merged the realms, split them apart, merged them once more, rearranged them like building blocks, in an attempt to rewrite the fabric of the universe and rewrite the laws of life and death to bring Luo Binghe back.

And I can’t stop imagining the sight of Liu Qingge charging after this grieving, feral man he loves and somewhat hates right now, fighting him at every turn, and begging him to stop already. Luo Binghe wouldn’t want this. Luo Binghe wouldn’t want to see his disciple fall so far and prove the stereotypes about demons right. And neither does Liu Qingge.

Liu Qingge may have gotten Shen Yuan back, but he lost his best friend in the process and he doesn’t know how to keep going if he can’t be the one thing, the one fight, still tethering Shen Yuan with gossamer threads to the buried remains of his sanity.

oh yeah shen yuan would absolutely lose it. but i think he would just assume he was being very metholodical and reasonable in his madness, too. like, it's only natural to spend this much time looking for binghe because he's the protagonist, isn't he? he's not supposed to be dead? even though the system stopped talking to him and every time he tries to vy after an answer he never gets a reply, the rule of the universe is that luo binghe is the protagonist and he isn't supposed to die and he definitely isn't supposed to die because of shen yuan, right? so it only makes sense to look for him because he's out in the world somewhere and maybe he just needs to rearrange some things temporarily to find luo binghe.

and liu qingge in this au... phew. i like to imagine he'd see luo binghe as almost a little brother figure. they'd have a more sibling-esque rivalry going on between them when luo binghe was still full of life and hadn't retreated to his bamboo house a majority of the time. sent on missions together and always challenging each other to fights and spars to compete for the spot of cang qiong mountain's greatest warrior. luo binghe privately knew that it would be liu qingge no matter what but it was just fun to goad him into fighting because liu qingge was so funny when he was upset and impatient.

i don't know how liu qingge would feel about shen yuan, though. maybe he would be somewhat indifferent to him pre-abyss, when he saw him on the peak in passing whenever liu qingge tried to coax luo binghe out again. but once shen yuan actually succeeded in the task liu qingge's been trying at for years now, he's got much more of an interested eye trained on him. i think maybe he would take him aside for sparring practice, if only to get luo binghe to come along and commentate from the side. and eventually come to see him as this likeee. mischevious brat of a disciple who he treats like a younger cousin. constantly poking fun and teasing with a deadpan face that shen yuan gets unreasonably upset with. in a way that liu qingge finds amusing.

now this contrasted to seeing the way shen yuan had become—? i think liu qingge wouldn't immediately jump to deciding that shen yuan was evil the way he did with luo binghe in canon. because he had seen shen yuan and how much he cared for luo binghe and knew that it couldn't be faked, and vice versa on the part of luo binghe about shen yuan. but he still had his duty as a cultivator to help the mortal realm and he just. wanted to fulfill luo binghe's request to take care of his disciple. and try and convince him to stop the senseless tearing of the world into bits and pieces because luo binghe didn't want this, destroyed the sword so he would be happy and now you're defying his dying wish?

but also liu qingge would blame shen yuan, a little. i think he would. he's known luo binghe far longer than he's known shen yuan so he has that selfish moment of thinking if only shen yuan had died instead of luo binghe and everything would've been fine. but he knows deep down that if shen yuan was dead in a world where luo binghe was alive, after giving him hope that his disciple lived, luo binghe might as well have been a corpse walking amongst people.

The angels don't have to ask to enter the bookshop.

DO NOT ASK NEIL ABOUT FAN THEORY.

We've been operating under the assumption that BOTH the angels and demons have to ask to enter the bookshop, but I don't think that's true. I'm pretty sure it's one of our red herrings for season 2.

When Gabriel shows up to the bookshop nude and oblivious, the doors are closed and (I believe) locked. Gabriel doesn't even know who or where he is, so he does what the default is... he knocks, and asks "Can I come in?" Aziraphale is frightened at first and tells him he can't come in but eventually our angels empathy wins and he says "Alright! Just... just get in!"

When the Archangels show up Aziraphale literally cuts them off before they reach the door of the bookshop. Saraqael suggests, "Shall we discuss this inside?", and Aziraphale continues, "By all means. Would you like to come in?"

>> If Aziraphale hadn't rushed out to meet the angels, why wouldn't they have just walked into the bookshop like they did numerous times in season 1? Additionally I am fairly certain Aziraphale's "By all means. Would you like to come in?" was added in post via ADR. That doesn't necessarily add credence to anything, just an observation.

When Muriel arrives to surveil Aziraphale they ask, "Great! Well, could I come in and do it inside please? Only cause it's really noisy out here and I can't hear anything." Aziraphale replies, "By all means."

We're never told the angels *can't* enter the bookshop explicitly like we are for the demons. We've always just assumed the same rules apply to all of the ethereal and occult beings.

But then, might I ask, why does Aziraphale tell us "Technically, this bookshop still counts as an Embassy"?

If the bookshop is still an embassy, the angels wouldn't need permission to enter, they would still have jurisdiction, and would still be able to monitor what's going on there... yes?

Let's compare this to the demons attempts to enter the bookshop, because Shax states clearly that she can't enter without permission. We see this again when she tries to get into the Bentley after it's canonically 'our car', and therefore at least partially owned by an angel.

I'm pretty sure John and Neil make a point of having the angels all ask in some way to enter, and Aziraphale seem to grant them permission as a red herring. They don't need to, but they want us to assume a false sense of security, to think that the bookshop is a safe space for our duo, outside of the reaches of both Heaven and Hell.

Technicalities are big in season 2 and I definitely think they're a huge underlying string running through all of Good Omens. In season 1, Crowley and Aziraphale stop Heaven and Hell from trying to restart Armageddon on a technicality. Gabriel and Beelzebub don't technically know if the great plan *is* the ineffable plan! It's definitely a favorite trope of Terry and Neil's to mock unfair, broken, bureaucratic systems, and Heaven and Hell are a PERFECT example of this.

**Somebody has written a meta on technicalities, I know I've seen it but I cannot for the life of me find it so if anyone could tag me so I could link it that would be brills! (Yeah that's right I'm adopting that from Charles from Dead Boy Detectives, 80's british slang ftw, I'm obsessed; please watch it, please, I need a second season.)

Neil has mentioned that the plot for season 3 might've had to be changed from he and Terry's original vision a bit, based on the political climate of the current day, and I'm sure that means we'll see some technicalities being the downfall of Heaven and Hells systems in Season 3 as well. I don't think the metatron is a villain, nor any of the other angels or demons. They're just fulfilling their function, following a set of rules, very much to a fault. This is all just God's big experiment after all, freewill, choice, eating the apple, and the angels and demons aren't exempt.

I wouldn't be surprised if there's some sort of technicality about the angels and demons themselves in season 3. We've seen that they're of the same stock, and we know Crowley at least is technically still the same person he was when he was an angel... more or less. Could the book of life end up revealing something like that the demons still exist perpetually as their angelsonas? A technicality, if you will?

Given the bookshop is still technically an embassy, is everything that happens inside observable by Heaven? Can they access the bookshop in their Earth Observation Files? There is some questionable blocking surrounding the bust in Aziraphale's bookshop, coupled with a curious record cover from Maggie's bookshop pointed out by @noneorother

Do you want to get into reading DC comics but it all seems very overwhelming and you have no idea where to start? Or maybe you've already been reading comics for a while but you've been avoiding exploring new characters because you just cannot find a good reading list for them.

If so you've come to a good place!!!

Along with @seratheminx on TikTok (go follow her! she makes really fun edits and other DC related videos, and this whole thing was her idea!) we've been working on a little project that assembles reading lists for different DC characters and teams for easy access! It also contains explanations for newer readers on basic terms and timelines. And gives our recommendations on where to start reading!

The lists featured on the docs were not made by us! We just wanted to put them in one place for easier access as sometimes they are way harder to find than just a quick google search (which I did not realise before I started this project 💀). All the credit for those goes to their original creators! Lists are added in the form of links so you can clearly see who the og creators are, please give them some love if you found their hard work helpful!!! Seriously those guides are amazing and so well thought out! But that also means that not every list is up to date, as some were made a few years ago or didn't include certain eras for other reasons. I tried to include disclaimers if I thought that the missing years are important to the character so you can look for the rest on your own but obviously there are 230+ characters and I'm not an expert on every single one of them so 😅. The rest: definitions, recommendations and such were written by me and Sera. I just wanted to make that part clear.

What notable books (or author) on folklore and/or mythology would you consider to have reliable info, and which ones definitely don't? It's a broad ask, but what are the first names that come to mind?

Very good ask! I'll try to see if I can put my thoughts in words, but if you need any further examples or evaluations let me know.

Here's a general rule: primary sources are Good. Books that directly reference primary sources are Good. The more distance between a book and the primary source, the less reliable it gets. Always ask yourself, where is this book getting its information from? How does it present this information? If you're not dealing with primary sources, always check to see how information is presented and where possible errors could creep in.

For example...

Books like these are the gold standard for reliability. If I was handing out ratings, they would score a perfect 5 out of 5. Everything is extensively cited (the second book is practically all citations). You can't go wrong with these.

In general the more specialized a book is, the more reliable it is. So the excellent Meeting With Monsters gets a very respectable 4.5 out of 5. Very detailed info just about Icelandic monsters. Why not 5? The authors engage in some speculative creature building where they treat the monsters as real animals and invent features for them (the hrosshvalur has dorsal spines teeming with bacteria that infect the wounds it causes, for instance). But these are restricted to marginal notes and do not interfere with the actual information.

More general books generally get less reliable. Again, ask, where are those sources? What are they?

This one is often held up as the encyclopedia of mythical creatures currently in print. It's a decent starting point to start looking for things. It has sources and each entry is linked to its sources. The entries are written in a dry, concise encyclopedic style. But it relies far too much on second and third (and fourth, etc) hand sources. Scratch a little past the surface and you start finding weird mistakes, errors, inaccuracies. Snowballing misinformation. I would consider this to be of average reliability at best. A 2.5 out of 5 or so. Best used as a suggestion to dig into deeper, better things.

This one is a broad introduction to dragons, but instead of an encyclopedia, each "entry" (chapter?) is presented as a retelling of that story. And with that comes very low reliability and heavy use of secondary sources. The retellings make stuff up that isn't anywhere in the originals and miss a lot of the point of the stories - and spread misinformation that continues to propagate online. Also there's plenty of cryptozoology in there so eeehhhh.

This one is obviously aimed at a younger audience, but I'm mentioning it because of one amusing detail. It seems to be a good introduction for children to dragon mythology. Except it presents with a straight face the marsupial dragon as a dragon from Australia. The marsupial dragon, you know, which was written into Dragonology as a joke? And Dragonology wouldn't even have made my primary-source-reliability anyway! Some due-diligence was not duly diligenced, if I may say so.

Then there are books that are just... confusing.

Like anything by Pierre Dubois. On the surface they seem well-researched. But the references and cross-references are more opaque than... uh... a very opaque thing. He clearly has a lot of them, but it's anyone's guess where the information he got came from (no cross-referencing, you see). Combine that with him just making stuff up to pad page numbers and it's never clear what is "true" and what he wrote (and some of it is distasteful, not going to lie). Sometimes he even misses the interesting part of legends just to write his own stories. The most charitable take is that this is literary fantasy, and maybe what he's said can be traced to actual reliable folkloric sources, but after having used him as a source of information I cannot recommend him. You could also argue that Dubois never does claim that this is a scholarly reference, but it sure is presented as one.

I have so far restricted myself to books that claim (or seem to claim) to be references on myth, legend, and folklore. Books that engage in speculative "creature building" (e.g. Dragonology, The Flight of Dragons, etc) would not be reliable as references, but they're still great books. You just wouldn't use them as sources of information.

... or would you? Sometimes non-reference books get treated as such, and then the information they made up gets reified by being parroted uncritically by later books. Like Woodruff's book above. A fake "long-lost expedition journal" by Pliny the Elder, it's an excuse for (gorgeous) art and Latin practice. Except that some of the made-up stuff in there found its way out of the book and - uncited - ended up in supposedly serious works. Like the Pyrallis being a dragon, or the two-headed Hyperborean frogs. Confusing. It even got a minor news mention because people were taking it seriously!

I am the second person who worked on the original iteration of Karmageddeon with Kneeby from around 2012 to 2017, Kneeby's ex boyfriend from that time. Anything bad you've heard about me is probably very exaggerated and honestly twisted to make me look like a bad person. I have grown and changed since then anyway, and any behavior in the past is not indicative of anything current about me. I may take time to answer asks or respond if something isn't urgent, as I am just a very anxious person. Please have some patience with me!

• This media will have a lot of horror themes (psychological horror, in particular). I'm not entirely sure about content like blood and gore yet or other more graphic themes, but I would like to aim for less focus on those things. I will figure it out!

Karmageddeon was Team Escapees in the past!! I thought I would be just dipping and disappearing again, but I want to take Team Escapees back, honestly. So I want to reboot it my own way. It's likely what I create is going to be closer to the original comic than Karmageddeon is, and you might even find things familiar!

Why do Hinata stans keep saying she was created first??

I would deeply appreciate if any of you could provide me with a source where Kishimoto states that he created Hinata on 1998 before any other character, because I keep seeing people on reddit and one article that he did but I cannot find the specific source.

This is where the supposed early design which I find soooooo fishy because compared to everybody elses pretty rough and rudimentary early designs Hinata's a whole colorized illustration but on top of that, this databook was published in 2002.

And the texts don't say anything about any creation in 1998...

The small text right at the bottom of Hinata's illustration says something along the lines "Sensei (Kishimoto) drew Hinata in color to use as a character sheet. This Hinata illustration is rare and being shown for the first time in Japan."

The other paragraph, the one that has the number 4 on it is Kishimoto talking about Hinata's illustration and says something along the lines "I just had fun drawing this, yes (laughs). I was trying to convey the image of Hinata to my assistant. I was trying to draw it with the world in mind, but… it turned out to be a very modern girl (laughs)."

The world means Naruto's worldbuilding/universe. The other paragraphs talk about other characters. But again no mention of any date of creation here, so if you could pinpoint me to the source of that claim, I'd be very grateful.

Some Hinata stans try to argue that Hinata was created first because her design is right along Kakashi and Iruka's who were created earlier than Sasuke and Sakura but you as you can see in the image 1. That's not Iruka, that's Ibiki and 2. You can also see Anko. Neither of these two characters were created at the beginning of the story as they would be introduced for the Chuunin tournament which we know wasn't Kishimoto's original plan for the story as he intended to write more missions abroad like the Land of the Waves arc but his editor pushed him to write about a tournament with other ninjas.

Anyways here's the link to that Hinata stan arguing that Hinata was created first but couldn't actually provide any evidence to support the claim she was created in 1998 and then just posted panels of Naruto before it serialized. Even the link they share doesn't claim Hinata was created first.

Additionally, when the manga had just come out Kishimoto was asked about how he came up with some characters and he's very clear that Sakura was the very first female character of the story

Compare these early character designs that were published in 1999 when the manga came out to Hinata's and theirs do look like early designs.

On top of that Naruto wasn't going to be a manga featuring human characters, aside from Naruto, the characters were going to be animals (the Hokage, senseis, etc.) and it was until his editor rejected this idea Kishimoto started to create human characters, so I'm very skeptical of this claim of Hinata being created before everybody else when Kishimoto still intended for the story to be completely different.

A. Yes she and I have spoken and I tend to agree. Her speculation makes more sense than what it appears the story is going to be. Here's my problem. Tommy's presence makes zero sense if it's truly a Bobby centric thing. He means nothing to Bobby. And no matter how much I try to bend my brain story wise to come up with anything even something farfetched that makes sense for him to be featured in the funeral like that I come up with squat. It makes no sense for him to be there in that capacity. I also know he's no longer credited for episode 15 so it's possible they cut whatever it was they filmed of him. Karla kind of made it sound like several things got cut for time so it's possible they did but if that's the case his presence in episode 16 will make even less sense. So I'm lost. I know Tim said he serves a function outside of Buck but he hasn't for the entirety of this storyline so far so why would that suddenly change? Being involved in rescue stuff makes sense for all of the different stations so I can get that to make story sense. Nothing about the funeral stuff is adding up. He doesn't fit. And that's not me trying to start something because he genuinely means nothing to me but from an actual story point he doesn't belong there. He definitely doesn't belong if it's really about Bobby. His presence makes a bit of sense though if it's actually something to do with Buck. The fact that Oliver made a point of saying in interviews that Buck was safe this time and has now said in two other instances that he has lied about certain answers makes that statement a little more suspicious. I don't know. It's going to be so very boring if it's truly what we've all already guessed. They're going to think Bobby is dead but he won't really be dead. How do they find out and how do they save him? I cannot get excited about Bobby 'dying' yet again only to find out he's not really dead. We've seen that storyline way too many times now. So either have the balls to actually kill him (I don't want him really dead but I'm tired of this storyline every season) or stop. Come up with something different.

They fucking CROP the picture to take off my signatures.

For fucks sake I'm tired of finding my art over there like this. This is why I stopped drawing full pictures for the @diy-fire-water-pups askblog in the first place and switched for icons in their answers instead. It's extremely discouraging and makes me lose interest in drawing more or in posting more.
