Fo3 Companions Favorite Past Times/Hobbies
➼ Word Count » 0.6k ➼ Warnings » None ➼ Genre » Platonic/Romantic
Charon claims to not have any hobbies, saying that he "isn't focused on himself as much as he is his employer", but if you pay close enough attention, you'll catch the (somewhat) pleasant expression on his face while he cooks. He's always offering to fix something up for you and it always comes back perfectly made. The ghoul has a real talent when it comes to working over a fire and secretly loves sharing his expertise with your less experienced self.
Clover got really good at origami while enslaved. She used to sit in her cage and fold papers and leaves till they slowly began to form something tangible. It helped her stay calm in the times that mattered the most, and you'll notice her taking out slices of cloth and other bendable material and just folding them into wasteland creatures. She'll do it while waiting on you or in the middle of the night when she can't sleep. It helps keep her mind at bay while she tries to cope with everything she'd been put through.
After her accident, Star Paladin Cross took up journaling, deciding that she wanted herself and the rest of the Brotherhood to be remembered in an honoring and respectable light. She writes as honestly and unbiasedly as she can so that the people of the future can objectively tell what went down in the Capital Wasteland. She's incredibly consistent with it and is proud to be participating in the logging of the Brotherhood's history.
As surprising as it might be, Jericho has done a lot of reading throughout his retirement and will still crack a book open as the two of you start settling down for the night. He tries to play it off saying that "it's what all the other raiders are doing these days" and that he just wants to "keep up with the younger ones", but the slight glimmer in his eye when he reaches certain pages would make anyone question his reasoning.
Butch says that spending you're time decorating anything is a waste of time, however, every time he visits your home in Megaton, he's rearranging furniture and bringing in little trinkets that make the place feel so much more welcoming than it was before. He's got a knack for interior design, although he'd never admit that he enjoys it.
While trapped in the vault, Fawkes spent a lot of his time tinkering with the terminal in his cell. He learned a great deal about hacking while messing around with the device and is quite proud of his capabilities when it comes to fixing them! He'd be over the moon if you ever asked him to take a look at your own, it makes him feel valuable and important.
RL-3 is big on cleaning. If it isn't spotless, it might as well be torched. This habit of his most likely stems from General Atomics programming him to be self-cleaning so that he can take care of himself and keep himself up to policy standards. It's useful enough when it comes to messy areas, but you have to be careful if he deems it to far gone to be saved, he'll set it on fire.
Dogmeat loves when you hide things around your home in Megaton and ask for him to find it. It makes him so excited when he can sniff around and help you retrieve your lost rocket toys. It's like a game of hide-and-seek, and he adores every second you play it with him.

Two Fallout protags and their animal friends!
More info/rambling under cut!
The Lone Wanderer (Al) and Dogmeat the wasteland mutt!
She canonically in my stuff has two puppies, which Al, because while he is a medic, he is not a vet, thought she was just fat/had worms until they appeared.
This is kind of my version of fo3's Dogmeat, i realize in the game, dogmeat is a boy dog, but I always bc of the fact puppies can appear in the cave of vault 101 just been like "omg what if girl".
Al doesn't really know much about dogs in general, but when he realized Dogmeat wasnt going to stop following him around, he was pretty fucking stoked about it.
Heres a doodle of the orange sized babies

Courier Six (Deano) and his trusted horse Rosemary + Rex the cyberdog!
When Deano found out the Kings dog was sick, being someone who cares deeply for animals (the health of them, the training, the care, etc), agreed to find him a new brain w.o any questions. In Deano's ideal future, he has 6 dogs, so he very much enjoys his time traveling with Rex.
Rosemary is a former working draft from a ranch near the Rio Grande Valley. She has been with Deano since before he was a courier (around 8 years). She loves to steal hats off peoples heads, much to Rex's delight and everyone elses annoyance.
She is very desensitized because of the life they have lived but terrified of motorcycles.
A fun fact: She has killed multiple people.
He teaches Rex how to handshake for iguana bits despite the much touted myth "you can't teach an old dog new tricks". Yes, he shows everyone this.
Also, not shown here are the various stray dogs and other animals he picks up/saves along his travels much to (sometimes) the dismay of his companions.

Big fan of The Charon Situation being just so incurably screwed up. If ever there were a person equipped to have full control over an adult man’s free will, it’s definitely not the Lone Wanderer. Even the most educated, well-meaning, and genuinely righteous LW couldn’t handle the responsibility. She’s a teenager raised in an insular totalitarian ant farm who’s suddenly been thrust into a world with no authorities, no guidance.
Which creates a wonderful dynamic with Charon. If Ahzrukhal is to be believed, he was raised this way - he never had the chance to be an adult, taking risks, shouldering responsibility, gaining independence. His parents probably weren’t in the picture for long. I imagine his lack of agency causes him to be emotionally immature sometimes - how can you learn to solve problems like an adult if all the adults in your life treat you like a weapon or a dog or a houseplant?
This guy has to be so screwed up in every way. According to the game guide, he just doesn’t sleep?? Or Azzy never let him sleep? He has that idiosyncratic formal speech pattern, he worries a lot, and the only personal detail we know about him is that guns make him happy. He also kind of openly hates the player’s guts sometimes (he’s sarcastic when given certain commands, is joyfully mean about the GECK, and basically sentences you to death in the non-canon base game ending). No matter how hard the LW tries, some damaged part of him will always resent her authority. She could be a thousand times kinder, fairer, and more just than all his previous employers combined, but she’s still one of them. He still doesn’t have free will.
That power is illegitimate for a reason. There’s no way not to misuse it eventually, especially for a teenager with endless stress and trauma of her own. You’re fighting and you tell him to shut up so you can have the last word. You get a significant other and he gets left home with the dog some nights. You take a quest path he doesn’t approve of and he has to grit his teeth and go along with it.
It’s not fair, can never be fair, and that’s the perfect dynamic to explore. Because as much as he hates her, he loves her too. She literally saved him from Hell on earth, gave him the opportunity to be a force for good. He’s not dumb, he knows that the problem is the contract, not her. Over the years they’ll mature together and learn how to fix a lot of these problems. There are so many unique challenges to creating a healthy relationship out of… that.
(A lot of writers have the contract get destroyed, especially for 😉 reasons. There’s nothing in the game indicating that can’t happen, and it works fine for their purposes. I just think it’s more fun for it to be a continuous obstacle.)

Meet the Sillies !
Here are my Lone Wanderer, Courier 6, and Sole Survivor (+ an old oc) !
Info on them under the cut <3
Lone Wanderer: Axel Nessley
Age: 19
Gender: nonbinary (they/them)
Sexuality: queer (hasn't figured it all out yet, but they know they like boys)
Companion(s) of choice: Butch DeLoria <3
Weapon(s) of choice: Lead pipe and 10mm pistol
Courier 6: Jesse Elliot Ruthford
They get ghoulified after they successfully activate the purifier, I have doodles of that I'll post later.
Age: 26
Gender: trans man (he/him)
Sexuality: pan demiromantic
Companion(s) of choice: Arcade and Rex. Sometimes Boone or Veronica and ED-E.
Weapon(s) of choice: ratslayer, revolver, and Oh Baby!
He genuinely doesn't remember anything past first obtaining the platinum chip and even then that exchange is foggy. He's not too worried about getting them back either as long as he's still aim is still straight.
Gender: transmasc (he/they)
Sole Survivor: Fletcher Melbun
Age: 32
Sexuality: bisexual (male leaning preference)
Companion(s) of choice: Nick Valentine, Hancock, and Dogmeat
Weapon(s) of choice: modified combat rifle, molotovs, .50 hardened sniper rifle, serated switchblade
Has been going through a nonstop gauntlet since he left the vault. Long story short: he sobbed when he found Codsworth, he sobbed when he managed to make his way back to Valentine's office, and he sobbed anytime his Pip-Boy map would glitch out. Despite this, not a pushover. Don't test him.
Age: 23 (at time of ghoulification), now? They'll never tell.
My ghoul oc: Warren "Renny" Knewman
Gender: Won't tell anyone to keep them on their toes, but genderfluid (any pronouns)
Sexuality: asexual biromantic
Specific game origin: he could be applied to any title tbf, but I mostly imagine her in Fallout 4.
Weapon(s) of choice: sawed off shotgun, laser pistol, baseball bat
Just kinda hangs around, you could find her pretty much anywhere with a terminal and/or a surface to sleep on. When he's in the commonwealth, he likes hacking Diamond City’s turrets for fun when there's nothing too serious going on. Either that or they're camped out in Goodneighbor.
If you have any questions about them, don't be afraid to ask !!! I'll be rolling more art out of them soon enough :]
Thanks for reading ! And please reblog <3

I am in dire need of a lone wanderer & companions reaction to the dunwich building and the krivbeknih.
Fo3 Companions Reactions to the Dunwich Building and the Krivbeknih
➼ Word Count » 0.9k ➼ Warnings » None ➼ Genre » Platonic/Romantic
Charon doesn’t have any real opinion on the book itself other than it makes him feel incredibly uneasy. If it were up to him, he’d have it destroyed. There’s nothing good that could come out of an occult item such as this, and selling it for a profit just doesn’t sit right with him. The Dunwich Building doesn’t make him feel any greater, he’s just happy to be able to drop the book off and leave. Although, when you do place it on the altar, he gets burnt along with the rest of the ghouls in the building. It's not as bad, just a few scorch marks, but it still stings him.
The entire idea of the book being able to control people makes Clover uncomfortable, but as long as it's in your hands, she won't voice her opinions. Surely you know what you're doing, and she puts her full trust in you. If you mention anything about selling it to Obidiah, though, she'll panic a bit and beg you not to. How can you be so sure about this? Maybe you should think it over? On the flip side, however, she doesn't want you to take it to the altar either. I mean, why not just keep it for yourself? Control the swamp folk however you see fit? She would much rather it be in your hands than some old man anyway, and you're not so bad of an owner to her. So why not?
Star Paladin Cross thinks it's an abomination that should be terminated immediately. What kind of person would need something like this anyway? It's despicable, and she expects you to take it to the Dunwich building to have it destroyed instantly. In fact, she feels so strongly about it that if you were to sell it to Obidiah, she'd pull her sledgehammer out and ask you to reconsider. When the two of you finally find time to go down to the altar, she'll feel incredibly relieved. She finds the building itself to be odd, but at the end of the day, she's a realist who tries to explain all the paranormal instances with logical conclusions.
Jericho hated going down into the swamp folks' ritual site just to grab some book and would snatch it out of your hands to go sell it off so that the two of you could make some money out of your troubles. I mean, seriously, why go all the way down in some lousy cave for something you just plan on destroying? No, thank you. He's selling it. He also refuses to go anywhere near the Dunwich building. There have been a lot of stories he's heard from other raiders over the years, but none have ever been as chilling as the ones surrounding that place. He just wants to snag some caps out of it and leave.
Butch will act all jittery the entire time you spend around the Krivbeknih. It's unnatural, and he thinks that the two of you should put it back instead of carrying it around. What if it makes you both a target? Who else wants this book? He doesn't want any kind of threat following you guys around and would beg to just get rid of it. He genuinely couldn't care less about what you do with it as long as you discard it somehow. However, taking him to the Dunwich building to have the book burnt doesn't make him feel much better. He'll have his gun unholstered the entire time and will aim it at anything that moves, even his own shadow. He never wants to look back on this experience and doesn't want to involve himself with any cults for a long time to come.
Fawkes finds the book and religious aspects intriguing and might ask to study them a bit further before either of you do anything. Things like these don't ever lead to anything good, he's aware, but he also finds knowledge to be important when making decisions on such a broad scale. Who knows, maybe what he learns while looking into the book might help the two of you out later on down the line. Of course, at the end of the day, he thinks it's better to destroy it than to sell it off. The idea that someone could have complete control over an entire race of people is sickening to him, and he'd hate for anyone to feel any kind of entrapment. Fawkes isn't afraid of the paranormal, in fact, he finds it dreadfully interesting, and would probably spend way more time than necessary in the Dunwich building.
RL-3 thinks the swamp folk are disgraces to America, and would try to burn the Krivbeknih himself once you both obtain it. Honestly, it's embarrassing to know that such scoundrels are living in the States as we speak. That being said, he would scold you if you went and sold it to Obidiah. Have you not learned anything in your training? These kinds of behaviors are not to be tolerated. Besides, the wasteland could use a little community service, and the Dunwich building needs to be cleared.
Dogmeat's fur stands on end whenever you take it out of your bag. There's a certain aura around it that he can sense and it makes him anxious. He'll growl and bark until you finally put it back into your inventory. The Dunwich building isn't much better. He's much less on edge, but there'll be moments when he seemingly stares at nothing and barks uncontrollably. It's unsettling, to say the least.

Am I playing Fallout 3 wrong?
For the most part, I'm having fun, but the game feels weirdly empty to me. Just large expanses of nothing sprinkled with the occasional building and a surprising lack of quests compared to Fallout 4.
I have around 2000 hours put into Fallout 4. It's one of my favorite games because (weirdly) just like Stardew Valley, there's always something driving you in between quests and exploration, and the game is designed to encourage further exploration without you realizing it.
In Stardew, it's improving the farm, expanding your house, gathering ingredients and resources, improving your tools, or gaining hearts. You can do pretty well for yourself off fishing alone but the desire for more is there in the back of your mind. The game doesn't tell me to make Iridium sprinklers and find the best sprinkler to scarecrow formation for my farm layout, I choose to do that because I want a giant stack of bread and berries on me at all times and watering by hand bores me. Also I want Sebastian to love me, and in my experience, there's no faster way to get frozen tears than to lob bombs everywhere on floors 40+.
In Fallout 4, it's the settlements. As Preston says himself, there's always someone who needs help, and settlements are not only an investment but also a constant incentive for me. Half of all mods I have for the game are around settlements: removing the build limit, scrap dead bodies, adding balcony supports, creative clutter, expanding Jamaica Plain, making Coastal cottage less of a shit hole. Normal stuff. And when I'm out I am constantly on the lookout for scrap I can use to improve settlements and traiders I can get supply orders from.
Even when I'm not questing, I'm still on a mission the game gave me to leave or take.
But with Fallout 3, I can't find much to actually do, and worse, I can't find anyone to do it with. The only companion I've met in my ~70 hours so far has been Charon, and that's because I was lonely, saved up 2k caps, and went and got him. I haven't even met dogmeat yet despite him being like 15 minutes at the most into Fallout 4. Don't get me wrong I like Charon's grumpy ass always grumbling over shit but ultimately the man is just a very tall, overcooked hot pocket with a shot gun. He's not man's best friend or my best friends smoaking toaster oven, sarcastic lesbian Lois Lane or Mayor over cooked hot pocket with free molly.
I am genuinely struggling for things to do. I'm just heading in any direction, hoping a deathclaw isn't over there.

Every Fallout 3 Companion’s Approximate Birth Year (Part 1/3)
Fawkes — 2054
There are cut terminal files that imply he moved into Vault 87 as a married adult, so I’m going by that.
deadwifeguy fawkesssss
RL-3 — 2075
Mr. Gutsies were first deployed sometime during the Liberation of Anchorage, which lasted ten years and ended on January 10, 2077.
But they aren’t treated as novel or expensive in the Anchorage simulation, which was developed before the end of the war.
But a loading screen also says they were developed “shortly before” the Great War.
Jericho — 2212
He’s 65 according to the game guide.
Star Paladin Cross — 2216
Because she’s a cyborg, she can be as old as I want her to be, and I want her to be in her sixties because that’s awesome.
Charon — 2251
I will not elaborate.
Talk to Ahzrukhal.
Clover — 2254
She’s only been a slave for a few months, so no Cait Math for her, but I figure 23 is reasonable enough.
Butch — 2257
He has a Pip-Boy in the birthday scene, so he’s older than the Lone Wanderer, who was born in July 2258.
The vault didn’t randomly have eight kids in one year, right? They’ve got to be spread out a little bit.
Dogmeat III — 2274
Four is a normal age for a dog to be, I guess. He can’t be too old if we accept that Dogmeat IV is his son.
Part 2
Part 3
