discipulusmaleficusâ:
He didnât know whether to be relieved or frustrated that Danny hadnât responded. At least it was cathartic, he⌠supposed.
(Not really.)
âŚHe wondered if it was possible to confuse this thing to death. Just as a matter of curiosity.
Kalmar nodded carelessly, took a few steps down towards that hallway, and then looked over his shoulder, peering at Danny. If heâd wanted to do anything to meddle with the construct, then this was his best chance so far.
Then again, that was hardly the priority just now. And, now he knew how to do itâŚ
âYouâre certain you donât know anything else about this?â he said, just in case this had made the construct a little more forthcoming, and then set off down the hall.
Danny was still undergoing a sort of minimal systems reboot. He was still aware and sentient, but was finding it very hard to concentrate or pay much attention to anything at all. For the sake of politeness, he was trying very hard to listen to Kalmar, but in the process, had to battle his CPU regulators to get the processing power necessary for it as they tried to fix him.
He was about to stand up to follow, but was currently lacking the concentration to be able to coordination himself enough to do so, and instead opted to lean backwards and thunk to the floor, looking backward at Kalmar.
The hall of which he spoke of was relatively short. A large, unmarked locked wooden door was on the far right side, while closer on the left, another wooden door, this time with a piece of wood, hung by string over a nail, with Dannyâs face on it. This one was already slightly ajar.
â...Huh...? Know about what...?â He feared he had failed in trying to pay attention. Any other time, he would have searched his memory to find something he could have been referencing, but he may have gone into shutdown if he tried.

âHeâs just a poor boy from a poor family, spare him his life from this monstrosityâ
So I know Logan is listed in the Staff page as being Dannyâs best friend but I donât think that describes HOW best friends they are.
Like, ungodly levels of super best bro. Theyâre basically literal brothers at this point.

discipulusmaleficusâ:
(âI can read,â heâd said, the moment Danny started, but this seemed to do little good.)
Suffice to say, Kalmar was less than amused. The story did nothing to lighten his scowl, and, as it went on, he found himself drawing his black robes defensively about him. Considering the context, he wasnât too pleased with the caricature that was the titular character.
It was a typical shallow morality fable, though without much bite to it. In most books, Ethwen would have simply died a horrible death, or wandered the earth in eternal poverty, without the chance for âredemptionâ he got here. Perhaps because he wasnât a child, this only rankled him more. Just decide to be nice! said the book. Itâs easy! The world isnât a harsh and unforgiving place at all!
Finally, he slammed that last page shut, and began savagely to recite from an entirely different volume. He had been made to study it in immense detail as a youth â and this particular passage he had down almost word-for-word.
â âAnd â lo! The Lord-Magus was struck down short of grasping his most terrible glory, and bound with chains and torcs such that his most abhorrent magicks could not escape from beneath the skin of his skin. His tongue was cut out so that he might not incant his foul incantations, and his fingers removed so that he might not sign his foul signs, and he was prodded with burning brands. Then, with great effort, they withdrew his immense and terrible power from him entirely, and returned it to the ether of the Unholy Planes.â â
â âThe very next day, he was tied to the back of the grand-magistersâ own steed, and dragged without a litter to the place where the executions were held. He was hanged from a rope until not quite dead, and then revived, to be disemboweled and hacked into pieces in the old manner. The people cheered with a great cheering. And, in fear that his spirit subsisted still in the pieces, they were to be burnt to ash, and the ashes of each buried at a different crossroad.â â
He took a breath, and slowed down a little, almost more upset than enraged. He was losing track of exactly what this was meant to prove, and he wasnât even certain Danny would understand. He should have gone for any other retort.
â âBut this was not enough to satisfy the Council. For, though a child cannot be killed for the sins of his father, it was decreed then that Kalistemon Zorabiâs heart was black, and that it flowed blackly through his blood into the blood and veins of those who inherited it. This most noxious taint could not be permitted to spread throughout the land, for no man of their line could ever work fruitfully, and no woman of their line could ever righteously bring up a child, for as long as they lived. And so, he called for the unspeakable oneâs progeny â each of his three children, and the two children of the first child â to be brought for the last time to the palace, and then to be cast out by the blood of their kin until such time as they could prove themselves worthy.â â He repeated these last three words with a mocking edge, as if personally insulted by them.
Pause. âThat oneâs true,â he added, quite cheerfully. âIs there anywhere here I might sleep?â
It was fortunate Danny wasnât all that smart, because had he understood a single word of what was just said, it might have done a little more than unnerve him. Thankfully, the only real result of Kalmarâs storytelling was that the canineâs eyes stuttered, buffered and then turned to the rotating half-ring of a loading circle for the duration of the story as his CPU usage began to skyrocket.
By the time Kalmar had finished, Dannyâs sentience had become questionable. In an effort not to overheat and shut down completely, his less vital functions had been put on hold. His body was stiff, frozen in the exact place when he had started listening, a complete lack of natural idle motion. His eyes were notably dimmer, and behind the layers of steel and synthetic fur, the inner whirring of his processors could be faintly heard as it struggled to piece any of the inputted information together. To someone who was tech-savvy, there seemed a good chance he may have frozen completely.
In the end, however, his CPU made the decision to forgo attempting to decipher the information altogether, and one by one, Dannyâs systems returned to life just as Kalmar finished. On the sentient side, however, he didnât feel very good at all. The heat from his processors gave him what could only be described as a robot headache.
â...Uh-...huh?â He seemed to have forgotten half of what they were talking about. âUh...yeah...kinda. We donât have beds, but...I could make you somewhere to sleep...â He dropped back and sat down with a metal thunk, mouth slightly agape as the fans began to cool down his systems. âYou can see if thereâs anything in there if you want. Itâs the room down the hall on the left. Iâll come with you, I just...Iâm...tired...â He didnât necessarily want to say that Kalmarâs story had almost sent him into shutdown. That felt a little rude.

The first pop-up was mostly a mirror image of the front cover, reciting the title and author, with the same image of the knight and the peasants. Only on the second page, did Danny speak up. The tone of excitement in his voice said that he was more than looking forward to narrating the story himself, and did so in a dramatically immersive storytelling voice.
The pop-ups were of a village at the bottom of a very tall, yet unrealistically small hill, the distended cardboard descended in layers as it got closer to the hill, giving an impression of depth to the landscape. Atop the hill was a large, similarly unrealistic appearing castle.
(X)
âLong ago in a land long forgotten, a peaceful village sat beneath a grand old castle...â The actual text on the storybook was surprisingly small for a childrenâs book. Despite being a pop-up, it seemed made to be read aloud by an adult. Unfortunately, the storyteller was certainly not one.
On the next page, it showed a similar illustration to the front cover, in a large, lusciously decorated throne room, but this time from a different perspective. It depicted a group of three villagers in different attire kneeling at the knees of the knight in black armour, who this time had his visor up to reveal a face that could only be described as exceedingly pompous.
âBut the ruler of the castle was a mean sort! Lord Ethwen, day and night, ignored the peasants below, and lived only amongst his court.â
The next page showed one of the three villagers, a woman who appeared to be a nun, clasping her hands and crying out, and the knight standing over her, pointing in the opposite direction as if demanding her to leave, nose stuck up and pompous expression retained all the while.
ââPlease, my lord, give us respite! The homeless starve and the sick grow worse! Please, give us food so that we may help them!â But Ethwen sent them away.â For being a robot, and one who was clearly designed to be a boy, Danny could do a pretty good âold ladyâ voice.
The next page was extremely similar to the previous, but this time the nun was replaced by a man in a medieval Pill Hat, dressed in dark green garments as if some kind of merchant or noble.
ââPlease, my lord, give us respite! Bandits raid our goods and thieves steal our cargo! Please, give us safety so that we may work again!â But Ethwen sent them away.â
Another mimicry awaited them on the next page. This time, the merchant was a much more scruffy looking peasant man in tattered, plain brown garments.
ââPlease, my lord, give us respite! Our cattle die and our crops grow thin! Please, give us food so that we may eat!â But Ethwen sent them away.â
The next page consisted of three different scenes. The first, of an elderly man in a blue robe with a flowing white beard, seemingly depicted to be a wizard, using his magic to heal a sick man. The second, the wizard fending off a group of rowdy men with swords using his staff, and the third depicted him bringing a field of crops back to life.
âThe Wizard Merlin saw this, and decided to help the villagers himself. He helped the nunâs sick and homeless. He fended off the bandits from the merchant, and brought the peasantâs crops back to life!â
On the next page was an image of the wizard in a castle bedroom, looking significantly exhausted and pointing angrily at the knighted man who stood in the foreground, facing away from him as if ignoring him.
âThe Wizard Merlin confronted him and said, âLord Ethwen, your people suffer, and you do not raise a finger to be a good person, before they decided to help themselves to your riches!â But Ethwen ignored the wizard.â
The next page showed the outside of a castle gate, with three separate illustrations depicting the three villagers being thrown out of the village. But in the background of each, there was the wizard, looking more and more distraught as the illustrations progressed.
âYet when the problems continued, Ethwen still refused to aid the people. He sent the Nun away from her church. He sent the merchantâs caravan away. And he kicked the peasant out of his farm.â
Again, the setting returned to the same angle as the cover, and the pages depicting the villagers kneeling, but this time, Merlin was in their place, stood tall and pointing angrily at the knight, who was cowering slightly.
âYour ignorance and neglect have gone too far!â he cried! âYou shall learn how it is to be helpless, and only when you see the error of your ways shall you return to this kingdom!â
The next page contained no text, and was a depiction of the wizard casting a bright blue ball of magic that spanned both of the pages. Despite there being nothing to read, Danny couldnât help but mimic an explosion with his mouth.
The next page showed the knight, now stripped of his armour and in nothing but ragged linen garments, in the middle of a small village on his own, looking rather shocked at his predicament.
âWith a mighty flash, Lord Ethwen was sent away, all his wealth vanished, and all his armour disappeared!â
The next page showed Ethwen sat on a tree strump in the middle of the village, looking mightly bored and sad.
âWith nothing to do, Ethwen waited, hoping that the wizard might bring him back, and thinking nothing but angry thoughts all the while.â
He was then depicted organizing different shaped rocks into rows akin to soldiers, and trying to stand mightily over them as if they were his subjects, but a following image showed him promptly sighing afterward.
âHe tried to make villagers of the sticks and stones, but none of them listened to him, and none of them did what he said.â
The next page showed him looking sad as he held his stomach, numerous lines and squiggles beside it indicating that he was hungry. On the following, a series of three illustrations depicted him kneeling before the same three villagers he had ignored, all of who were sending him away in an almost exact mirror image of the earlier scene, with Ethwen getting progressively dirtier and more ragged.
âWhen Ethwen got hungry, he demanded, asked and begged for help, but none of the villagers seemed to know who he was, and none of them offered their help.â
Next, he was shown bawling like a baby in a filthy puddle of mud behind a house, yelling out at the midnight sky. He seemed a lot more ragged, though that wasnât a good indication of how much time had passed.
ââMerlin!â he cried, âI understand now how it is to feel such neglect! I have no home, no food, and nobody will help me! Please forgive me!ââ
The next page showed him in the foreground, looking up at the night sky, with a single star shining brighter than the others.
âThen, he saw above, a bright light that lit up the night sky, growing brighter and brighter...â
The next page promptly depicting him being violently struck in the face by a glowing blue ball of light.
âBoom!â
Ethwen was shown waking up in his royal bed as the morning sun peeked through the windows, looking dazed and confused.
âEthwen woke to his bedroom. His money, his possessions and his armour, all back again!â
He was then shown holding the helmet of his black suit of armour. His face seemed spiteful and angry, but then on the next page, was depicting pausing and thinking, before losing his pompous demeanour and smiling.
On the next page, a series of illustrations showed him helping the three villagers he had exiled, his armour now white and a genuine smile on his face.
âEthwen decided to apologize to the villagers. He gave the nun money for her church, personally went to rid the merchant of the bandits, and even helped the peasant look after his crops!â
On the final page, Ethwen was atop a horse, waving to cheering crowds in the middle of the village. In the background, the wizard could be seen, resting on his cane and smiling contently.
âEthwen respected the villagers, and they respected him back. From that day, he became known as Lord Ethwen the Kind, and the kingdom lived happily ever after.â
âThe end.â
Danny was wiggling his tail in joy, either from anticipating whether or not Kalmar would have enjoyed the story, or from just having had fun reading it himself.

Character Development Questions: Hard Mode
In what situation was your character the most afraid theyâve ever been?
Danny has had very few situations where heâs ever been genuinely afraid (His living conditions are pretty tame and donât attract much danger), so itâs hard to pick any single moment. That being said, he has been threatened before, both by rowdy teenagers, and his own boss. He was also struck by the latter once, which did trigger some sort of unusual reaction in him, though this was more a overriding response from his coding than a conscious reaction on his part, and Danny barely even remembers the incident because of it.
Does your character remember names or faces easier?
If weâre talking strictly in regards to his coding, Danny remembers faces easier. He comes to meet a lot of new kids during the day hours, and heâs definitely met two people he only knew the first name of, yet that shared that same name. Regardless, he can still remember both of them, what they like and donât like, and how to act around them.
I sometimes mention how Danny has a bad memory and tends to forget details, but this is the only exception. Danny knows the names, faces, likes, dislikes and general personalities of what is likely hundreds of people, and has never forgotten a single detail, even after years of separation.
Once you meet Danny, he will never forget you.

Character Development Questions: Hard Mode
How quick or slow is your character to resort to physical violence in a confrontation?
Danny is deathly afraid of violence, and even the thought of hurting someone by accident makes him uneasy, so itâs no surprise he would much rather submit than resort to violence. The only circumstances he would ever hit someone were if he was having some sort of catastrophic system breakdown (typically brought on by certain emotions like anger conflicting with his code), or if the other party was attacking him or someone else.
If he did ever get into a genuine fight, though, Danny could kick some ass. 700 pounds of metal, fur and anger poucing on you doesnât end very well.

discipulusmaleficusâ:
Kalmar, on the other hand, only smiled encouragingly to his agreement.
âExcellent.â
By the time he might have raised a hand to shake, he was running off to the next room. He cocked his ear to the clattering, comforted himself with the thought that Danny could have simply snapped his neck earlier if he were intent on betraying him, and stayed put. Nothing in this place had proven worthwhile so far, and he didnât much feel like standing up again to chase after the dog.
Instead, he absentmindedly started rifling through his own pockets, taking out one trinket after another and turning it over in his hands. Coin of Laverna, Pincers of Scorching, the foot of a cria that had once been blessed by an unknown and unnamable deity. It all felt curiously dead and meaningless in his hands. A small vial of curious gemstones did nothing more than rattle when shaken.
Had these only ever worked in conjunction with his own aura? Or were they reacting to whatever field was disabling him? Perhaps, he decided suddenly, he hadnât checked himself quite thoroughly enough for the source of the curse.
(Kalmar studiously started emptying his pockets out onto the nearest table.)
Danny was quick to return, being heard before seen as bounding hydraulic footsteps made their way down the corridor. He leapt and weaving between the tables once more and came to a sudden halt infront of Kalmar, stopping just short of him before falling back into a sitting position, hitting the floor with an almighty metal thud.
In his mouth was a reasonably thick book with an equally oversized case binding. The canineâs tail swayed rapidly in excitement as he dropped it to the ground, the loud thunk as it hit the floor said it was especially heavy for a book. Fortunately for Kalmar, robots didnât salivate, and so the book seemed intact from a hygiene standpoint.
On the front cover was a colourful display of cartoonish artwork, depicting a man in shining metal armour standing proudly over a collection of others dressed in rags and shoddy clothing, all of whom seemed sad or pleading in some manner. The title, in a medieval-style font, read âThe Curse of Lord Ethwenâ.
âThis sounds kinda like this storybook! Itâs really cool, itâs one of my favourites! Oh- and itâs a pop-up book too!â In his excitement to show Kalmar his story book, Danny seemed to have not noticed the numerous bits and bobs scattered about the table. Then again, he didnât have much an attention span anyway.

Decided to add a new headcanon for these little plushies.
âBack when he and Sally used to perform onstage during their 'Celebrity Era', a line of Plushies of the two was proposed, but never got to shelves. The few that ever saw the light of day were all of Danny, and he keeps them hidden away in a small box in the storage room. Danny often likes to give one to someone he trusts as a very close friend, but this is a very exclusive group, as he only has around fifteen of them. Only one Sally plushie was ever made, which Danny treasures more than almost anything; so much so that not even his colleagues and closest friends know where he hides it.â
A piece of REALLY CUTE gift art from Alisria!
Also yes, Danny (and probably Logan aswell) has one of these plushies.
