I'm going to state it again for the people in the back.

I only draw with references. Most artists outside of the Deviant Art echo chamber use references when drawing. Most of your favourite concept artists photo bash to get a design out on time. Vermeer traced using the camera obscura and essentially painted by numbers. Rembrandt observed his subject directly when he drew his working sketches. Monet's famous garden is still viewable today. You can literally set up an easel in front of that bridge and paint that scene yourself. It is not considering stealing to do so. It's often a learning exercise.

This obsession with moral creative purity testing that's developed in amateur art spaces since the 2000s is what is stunting you as an artist. References are ok to use. You don't see classic Disney animations drawn from nothing. No, the artists studied video of each movement from a real person before they stylised their characters.

No professional artists are worried about this kind of purity testing. They are concerned about what works and what helps them improve. That means photo references, that means learning anatomy from life drawing, that means using a compass or a ruler. Sometimes it involves tracing.

You are allowed to use tools to help you draw. That's all a reference picture is, a tool. Especially if you're learning, it's invaluable. Use your tools.
