I feel like this dialogue couplet is a meta message, too, from the show to viewers, especially in the context of an episode so prominently featuring a trans character. This is what Doctor Who is about now. This is what we're going to be talking about going forward, and we're going to be talking about it openly.

It echoes an earlier moment in "The Day of the Doctor" when the War Doctor (the bridge between the S1 Doctors and S2 Doctors) is taken aback to see 10 snogged by Queen Elizabeth and asks, "Is there a lot of this in the future?" and Eleven replies, "It does start to happen, yeah." Because when S2 featured romantic love and sexuality involving the Doctor themself, it was a shift in subject matter and treatment, and it occasioned comment from the show's audience.

And now we are past starting to happen, and "Wild Blue Yonder" seeks to make that as loud and as clear as possible, repeatedly. Donna's reply, "It was never that far from the surface, mate," is also as much a message to the audience as to her friend. If you thought Doctor Who wasn't about human rights and telling enforced gender and gender roles to go fuck themselves, you have not been paying attention all this time.

Is that who I am now?

This is so powerful because queerness has always been in Doctor Who and FINALLY the Doctor themself can say it out loud. But at the same time, the way it's phrased in a way that makes their orientation and preferences always malleable, always changing.

Because the one thing the Doctor always is? QUEER. 🏳️‍🌈

The Doctor is ace (as said by David Tennant and Matt Smith and Jon Pertwee). They are demi. They are gay. They're bi. They're pan. They're fluid. Their orientation is all and both and neither. They are INEFFABLE at the core of their romantic and sexual being.

Is it just me or does this line hit different when you remember that David Tennant actually has a non-binary kid who uses they/them pronouns, and has worn this non-binary rainbow pin to a bunch of interviews in support of them—?
