Pairing: Roboute Guilliman x FemReader
Warning: things get spicy, though nothing explicit
Description: The reader struggles with insecurity and low self esteem, while Guilliman struggles with... other things.
Oh boy, this is definitely the spiciest thing I've ever written. Be gentle, please!
âRoboute, ahâŚ.â
You reached up to him from your place sprawled atop his desk. Data slates and parchment scattered in every direction as you writhed. A sensual dance, just for him.
He realized heâd never truly appreciated the aesthetic beauty of the female form before now. Starlight and candlelight competed to see which could add the loveliest glow to your skin. Your bare skin, on display for all to see.
No. Not all. Just him. No one else would ever see you this way. Heâd slaughter anyone who-
âRoboute?â
Guilliman blinked and the fantasy faded.
You sat in a plush chair heâd recently placed in his office, legs tucked up beneath you, a book in your hands. The very picture of innocence.
Guilt gnawed at him.
âYes, my dear?â
âIâve finished this one.â You tapped the bookâs cover. âWith your permission, Iâd like to return to the library- pardon, the librarium, for another.â
He smiled. âYou grow more fluent in High Gothic by the day.âÂ
You glanced away. âI shudder to think how I must have sounded when I first arrived. Itâs difficult to master pronunciation when one has only ever read the words.â
He returned to the parchment before him, signing his name for the two-hundred-and-thirty-second time that morning. âNonsense. Your accent was, and is, utterly charming.âÂ
Especially when you cry my name as I suck bruises into your delicate- by the Throne! Get a hold of yourself, man!
âYouâre kind to say so.â
Something in your tone gave him pause. He straightened, observing you more intently. The muscles around your mouth tightened, turning your smile wooden. Your shoulders hunched and you gazed at the floor. He realized you resembled nothing less than a serf expecting a scolding.
But before he could comment your mood shifted once again, and you looked as relaxed and happy as before. âAs I was asking, may I return to the librarium?â
âOf course. And you need not constantly ask my permission. I have given instructions for that particular librarium to be open to your access code at all hours.â
Your delighted gasp made his hearts glow.Â
âThank you, Roboute! Iâve only just finished the first volume of Epatheonâs Chronicles of Macragge and the historitors suggested I read all six before moving on to the history of wider UltramarâŚ.âÂ
Guillimanâs worries faded as he absorbed your chatter. A passing cloud, nothing more. He braced himself to return to the lonely monotony of Imperial paperwork when a particularly excited gesture sent your book tumbling to the floor.
âOh, my apologies!â
Then you bent⌠overâŚ.
And he was suddenly profoundly grateful to be safely concealed behind his massive desk.
Throne, damn it.
***
âThank you, Lord Tarchus.â You smiled up at the Ultramarine assigned to escort you that day, praying youâd gotten his name right.
The helmeted head inclined slightly in response.Â
As you started toward one of the only other areas you felt familiar with on this massive ship, he fell into step behind you.
You thought youâd successfully banished the looming sense of dread. But, for the second time that day, tension tightened a leaden fist around your stomach. You kept your gaze focused straight ahead, not daring to meet the eyes of the people you passed. A diplomatâs mask came in useful at times like these.
But it could not shield you from your own thoughts.
âWhat presumption to think you deserve this kind of attention, girl.â Grandmotherâs voice pierced your defenses. âHow full of justified resentment this warrior must be for wasting his time on you. Who do you think you are?â
Your heart raced as you walked faster. You needed to get your book, then get out of these halls and back where you belonged. Tucked quietly into a corner of Robouteâs office where youâd be no bother to anyone.Â
Where youâd be with him. With his gentle eyes and strong hands. Hands that felt so good when they pressed you to a massive chest rippling with muscle to put the gods of antiquity to shame. Youâd felt them through his tunic on the night he kissed you breathless. When his touch sent molten liquid boiling straight between your-
A gauntleted hand landed on your shoulder. âThis door⌠my lady.â
âOh!â Heat rushed to your face as you realized youâd walked straight past the librarium entrance. âY-yes. Thank you. I wonât be long.â
Your shoulders sank as you entered your code and stepped into the room. What right had you to think such thoughts? Roboute hadnât so much as touched you since carrying you to your room after the⌠incident. Heâd been polite, chivalrous, and honorable. He spoke to you like a dear friend. You should be more than satisfied.Â
But you remembered hunger in his eyes the night he proposed. Was it selfish of you to want just a glimpse of that again?Â
Grandmotherâs laugh, half mocking half disgusted, echoed in your ears.
âPathetic child. The man finally came to his senses and realized the truth: youâre simply not worth the effort.â
***
A million things should have occupied the Lord Regentâs mind. Mountains of paperwork, endless strategies to compile, not to mention the meeting with Calgar and the Ultramarine Captains in an hourâs time. Heâd thought having you near would help him focus.Â
A foolish assumption.
Your face greeted him as you emerged from your quarters each morning. You took your meals with him, spent most of your waking hours reading in the chair heâd provided for you. And during his few free moments, or when the paperwork in front of him required less than his full attention, the two of you conversed.
He told you much of Ultramar and Macragge, his home. He recounted stories of his childhood and parents that he hadnât had the heart to dwell upon since his reawakening. Bittersweet memories, but made more sweet by your sympathetic ear.
The sheer relief of talking to an outsider did more to brighten the shadows of despair encompassing him than anything else in the past decade. Your mind was bright and pure, unshackled by superstition or callous cruelty. Your hands unstained by blood. You did not fear asking questions, nor did he fear telling you the truth. Every moment spent in your presence was a giftâŚ.
âŚand a torment.
Guilliman knew heâd been staring at your empty chair for minutes now. Breathing deeply, he tasted your scent upon the air, and he knew if he approached heâd be able to feel your warmth on the fabric.Â
Heâd felt your warmth before, and regretted it. Because now he knew what you felt like, what you sounded like, what you tasted like.
Throne, I ache for her.
Lust had never been a factor in his life. His accelerated maturity had bypassed the riotous desire of the average adolescent, nor had his brothers ever expressed experiencing such.Â
Well, Russ perhaps.
He scowled. He was no slobbering Space Wolf. And yet.
You gasped when he took you in his arms. He heard your single heart beating wildly within your chest and the sound maddened him. It took so little effort to push you to the polished floor. Your clothing came apart like parchment in his hands.
He loomed above you, higher thought lost to his most primal instincts. You submitted eagerly, turning onto your front and presenting yourself to him. Only ever to him. He snarled in satisfaction as he mounted you like a feral-
âNo!â Data slates clattered to the floor as he stood, shaking the fantasy from his head.
You were precious and fragile. Such actions would only frighten you, and the idea of you fearing him was unbearable. For you, he would stifle these perverse desires.Â
Even if it meant denying himself the slightest touch.
His vox crackled to life. âMy Lord? Is all well?â
Guilliman took a moment to regulate his panting breaths. âAll is well, Cato.â
âI thought I heard-â
âAll is well, Cato.â
A brief pause, then. âThe Captains are already assembling in the comm center. Would you like me to escort you to your armoring station?â
At least his armor would hide certain biological functions he found it increasingly difficult to control.
***
âStupid female.â
For a brief moment you thought youâd somehow manifested your thoughts into reality. Then your eyes adjusted to the soft candleglow, and you saw you were not alone in the librarium.
A Mechanicus techpriest stood next to one of the writing tables, looming over a prostrated serf. You fought an instinctive grimace at the mass of metal augmentations and scar tissue that seemed to make up the majority of the Imperiumâs cyborg scientists.Â
A necessary evil, Roboute had called them.
But as you watched the techpriest reach down and grasp the serfâs lower jaw in his claw of a hand, you certainly felt this one was more evil than necessary.
An image of Lord OâRourke threatening to end the lives of thousands of innocents flashed through your mind like lightning. The sudden rage that had prompted you to hurl yourself at him surged in your veins again.
âUnhand her at once!â
The priest looked up with a hiss and clatter, and this time you didnât bother hiding your scowl of disgust as you marched toward him.
âI said unhand her!â
âNoncompliance.â Its voice screeched. âAdditional human female does not equal authority figure.â
You grasped the metal wrist still crushing the serfâs jaw. âI am the Lord Regentâs betrothed. And I command-â
âIrrelevant data. Betrothed does not equal authority-â
âDo not interrupt me.â You feltâŚfierce. âI may not have authority over you now. But one day I will. And you know what I do have?âÂ
You stared, unflinching, into its corroded ruin of a face. âA very good memory.â
The techpriest whirred and buzzed for a moment. Then the metal hand unlocked and withdrew. You released its wrist, stepping between it and the serf.Â
âCompliance.â It hissed.
âThank you. Get out.â
âCompliance.â
You didnât move from your place sheltering the serf until the priest shambled its way through the librarium door. Then you bent double, panting as the adrenaline rush faded.Â
âMyâŚmy lady?â
You turned to the serf, a young woman, still kneeling on the hard floor. Blood welled from a scratch along one cheekbone. Glancing around at the shelves and tables, you saw nothing with which to clean the wound, not unless you chose to rip a page out of one of the books. Instead, you tore a strip from your sleeve.Â
The woman gasped. âOh no, my lady!â
âItâs only cloth.â Kneeling down, you pressed it to the womanâs cheek. âThat brute ought to be punished.â
âIt was my fault.â The woman gestured to the bucket of cleaning supplies tipped on its side next to her. âI was clumsy and jostled him. I deserved-â
Another lightning-flash of memory. A younger you, exhausted from studying all night, stumbling into your tutor as you tried to rise from your desk. The blows that followed.
âYou did not deserve that.â You recognized the dark circles underneath the womanâs eyes. âHow long since you last slept?â
âI donât know.â The woman lifted her chin. âI am not complaining, my lady. My sister- I mean, the other serf assigned to this librarium, just gave birth. I am more than willing to take her burden on my shoulders.â
The scratch stopped bleeding, and you removed the cloth from her cheek. âThatâs very good of you. May I know your name?â
âMy name? I- of course, my lady. I am called Hestia.â
âWell, Hestia, this librarium looks fairly sturdy. I doubt it will crumble to dust if you take a day-cycle to rest. And if anyone questions you,â you felt some of that fierceness return, ârefer them to me.â
***
â...refer them to me.â
The servo-skull finished its projected recording and returned to hover over the techpriestâs shoulder. Guilliman steepled his fingers in front of his face.Â
âIncident equals gross overstep.â The Magus squawked.Â
âI see.â
âChastisement recommended!â
âHmm.â Guilliman turned to the serf at his elbow. âRequest the ladyâs presence in my office, Marcus.â
The man bowed and jogged off, but not before Guilliman noticed him shoot a glare toward the techpriest.
Guilliman returned to examining a data slate on his desk, pointedly ignoring the Magus. In his mind, the scene of you defying the techpriest played over and over again. The grainy projection couldnât mask the imperious lift of your chin, or the fierce look in your eye. Neither did it hide the gentleness with which you tended the serf womanâs wound.Â
Judging from Marcusâs reaction, Guilliman had no doubt the story already circulated through the serf quarters.
If they liked you before, they adore you now.
A few minutes later, the door opened and Marcus entered with a flourish. âMay I presentâŚ.â
He gave your name and titles with respect bordering on reverence. Guilliman watched your face redden and felt a surge of empathy as he stood and beckoned you to his side. Your smile froze when you noticed the irate Magus.
You rushed to him. âRoboute, I can explain-â
âNo need, my dear.â For the first time in days, he touched you, taking your hand in his.
The softness of your skin, and the way his hand swallowed yours ignited a heat deep in the pit of his stomach. He fought the wild urge to drag you up and onto his lap.
Instead, he addressed the Magus. âYou are correct that my betrothed had no authority to act as she did.â He felt you tense, and gently squeezed your hand. âThis is a matter I intend to rectify.â
Pulling a foot-thick stack of parchment from the pile on his desk, he handed it to Marcus. âThis is an order giving this lady, my future consort, authority upon The Macraggeâs Honor. She may command any person on this ship only excepting the Mechanics ArchMagi and the highest ranking Ultramarines.â
There were other caveats and exceptions of course, not to mention an extensive list of extenuating circumstances. He was nothing if not thorough.Â
âSee that it is posted and transmitted throughout this vessel.â
The serfâs eyes shone as he clutched the parchment to his chest, bowed lower than before, and fairly sprinted from the room.
The Magus looked as though he was about to start venting steam.
âYou are dismissed.â Guilliman fixed the techpriest with a look heâd been told could freeze promethium. âSee your underlings take greater care with the serfs, Magus. Any reported abuse will be severely punished.â
âCompliance. My Lord.â
As soon as the door hissed closed behind the Magus, you gripped his hand with both of yours. âRoboute, please donât do this.â
He stared down at you, at the panic in your eyes. Before he could speak you rambled on.
âI-I canât command anyone. I didnât mean to suggest I could, or wanted to. I donât deserve this kind of power! Iâm so, so sorry, but-â
You tried to draw away, but he tightened his grip on your hand. All your interactions up to this point replayed in his mind, and one commonality became blindingly clear.Â
âWhy do you think so little of yourself?â
You twisted in his grip, eyes darting about like a captured prey animal. âIâm sorry, IâŚIâŚ.â
âStop apologizing.â Against all the stalwart promises heâd made himself, he drew you closer. âWhat has happened to you that you cannot recognize the greatness I see within you?â
âN-no, Iâm not-â
âHave I done or said something to make you think yourself unworthy?â
âNo! At leastâŚ.â
When tears filled your eyes he felt pain worse than Fulgrimâs blade across his throat. He cupped your face in his hands.
âTell me what I have done that I may rectify it.â
He watched you squeeze your eyes shut and lean into him. âY-you havenât touched me in so long. I thought, I thought you didnâtâŚ,â your voice died away.
If the Emperor Himself had suddenly marched into his office and punched him in the jaw Guilliman could not have been more stunned. All the times he fantasized about you, all the nights he stroked himself to completion to thoughts of you, all the moments he barely held himself backâŚ!
âDamn it all to the Warp!â
***
Robouteâs sudden bellow nearly deafened you. You found yourself picked up by your hips and tossed atop his desk. Writing implements and documents of what you were certain was vital importance scattered in all directions. But the look in the eyes of the giant leaning over you said he could care less.
âDo you remember my words the night I came to your chambers?â
By the Light and the Void, that growlâŚ.
âYes.â You whispered.
âTell me.â
âY-you, you saidâŚ.â
His face pressed close to yours, teeth bared. âTell. Me.â
The sheer force of a Primarchâs lust overwhelmed you. And yet you realized youâd willingly get on your hands and knees to beg for more.
âYou said you wanted me.â
His mouth crashed into yours, stealing the very air from your lungs. After a blissful eternity you felt him grasp your thighs and yelped as he flipped you onto your front, your legs dangling off the side of his desk. Then his fingers sank into your hips and he pressed against your rear.
âAh, Roboute!â
âDo you feel that?â You heard snarling frustration in his voice. âDo you feel how badly I desire you?â A forearm the thickness of your waist slammed into the desk above your head. âI have never felt like this about anyone in my long life. The things I want to do to you, woman.â
You felt his chest expanding and contracting against your back. You heard his heaving pants.
Doubt vanished.Â
âI love you, Roboute!â
He groaned. Again, he turned you and you stared up into his eyes. The hunger remained, but tempered now by something far sweeter. You reached for him and he let you pull his head into your neck.
He whispered against your skin. âI swore not to take you until I could do so as your husband. And I stand by that oath. But never again doubt my desire for you, my Hearts.â
Relief. Sheer relief like the removal of a burden you hadnât known youâd been carrying.Â
âNever again.â
He pulled back to look you in the face. âAnd stop doubting your worth.â
A harder request. âIâŚI will try, Roboute. For you.â
He rested his forehead against yours. âDo it for your own sake, my love. You are far more than you-â
The door opened and the outraged voice of none other than Cato Sicarius spoke. âLord Guilliman! I just read your latest proclamation and I felt it my duty to voice severe concerns-â
âGET OUT.â
You heard the hasty retreat of armored boots and burst into giggles. Roboute looked down at you, then his rumbling chuckles joined yours.
You laughed in each otherâs arms, and all was perfect.

The scavengers?! YEEEESSS!!1! my precious darlings :D They deserve this <3 can't wait to see more :) Thank you for writing this, i really needed something positive right now.
No worries :) I just really wanted to write these five goobers struggling
A Lifeless Ordinary
IDW Scavengers x Reader
⢠âYou realize that thing is sentient, right?â Fulcrum asks, leaning to watch Spinister trying to coax their new pet into saying his name. So far the only response has been for it to lift both hands, middle fingers extended in what he suspects isnât a friendly gesture.
⢠Looking up, Krok vents as Crankcase hesitantly mimics the gesture at the alien and it starts laughing like a Cybertronian would. Everything about it, that itâs bipedal, its little face, its hands and legs, is uncannily like a Cybertronian in form aside from being organic. âOf course, I do,â he finally says, servos flitting over the controls to check everything is ready to go even though heâs already checked three times while they wait on Misfire. Knows heâll check more times, but unable to stop since the repetitive gesture keeps him focused. And from overthinking exactly how much damage Misfire can do running a simple errand unsupervised.
⢠âHonestly, Iâm surprised Spinisterâs not forgotten itâs his and shot it yet.â Fulcrum winces in sympathy when the hulking purple medic seizes you and roughly runs a servo over your head while you try to smack him, chattering angrily before giving up and slumping in his hand. âAny luck with that language?â
⢠Krok hesitates as Misfire comes running into the ship, a tiny container in his servos. âWe should probably go,â he says right as the natives start firing on the ship.
⢠âDid you steal that?â Fulcrum growls, as Krok powers up the ship. Not even sure why Fulcrumâs asking, because of course he did. Why wouldnât he have?
⢠Indignities upon indignities. Dangling from the biggest oneâs hand, you finally give up as his big servos pet your hair and he rumbles nonsense at you. As far as you can tell, youâre a pet. Not exactly flattering, but since theyâre not hurting you and theyâve kept you trapped on their ship since finding you, thereâs not much you can do about it. Youâd made attempts to try and play charades with the big one and after hours of it youâd decided either youâre just awful at charades or heâs an idiot. But at least his hands are warm even if his touch is a bit rough as he tries to cuddle you against his neck.
⢠âIn my defense, they refused to sell to Cybertronians. Something about us being warmongering abominations destroying the galaxy,â Misfire says, prying open the container and immediate leaning away from the stink. âOrganic food for the organic.â
⢠Grumbling slightly, Spinister lowers you near the box and they wait as you look inside then back at them questioningly. âYou think it knows what it can and canât eat?â Crankcase mutters as Misfire huffs. But that is something Krok hadnât considered. Surely you do know. Right?
⢠Whatever they brought you looks like blue noodles and smells like dirty socks. And theyâre just staring down at you talking amongst themselves, because they canât understand you. What even is this? Itâs when the one with a chunk missing from his head bends and mimes eating that it sinks in. Surely they donât think youâre going to eat this garbage? Apparently they do as the calmest of the five gently nudges you closer to the box. And inhaling to gather yourself, you gingerly pick up a slick noodle in your fingers and bite into it. By some miracle it does actually taste good despite having the texture of a raw potato. You suppose theyâre trying to take care of you and thatâs something.
⢠Listening to the miserable sounds that arenât even marginally better than the tantrum Spinister had thrown threatening to shoot Misfire over the whole mess, Krok reaches out a servo and rubs between your shoulders as you keep dry heaving, because apparently you donât know what you can and canât eat as difficult as it is for him to grasp. The rest of the Scavengers had retreated a safe distance when youâd started noisily purging the food, so now itâs just the two of you.
⢠They probably werenât trying to poison you. Maybe. Shaking and dehydrated, you slump over and the calm one carefully wraps his servos around you and cradles you to his chassis, murmuring softly as you press your palms against your eyes, head pounding and throat raw. His touch is at least gentle compared to the otherâs as he runs a big servo along your spine over and over. When youâre less miserable, you need to try charades with him since he seems to be the leader. Maybe you can get it through his head that youâre not a pet. Right now, you just want to soak in the warmth of him and rest.

Brookâs Past, Military and Everything Between [ An Essay kinda ]
Brookâs past is not a thing many people seem to mention or think about, at least in full, however itâs something that's plagued me. Not only as a Brook fan, but simply out of the odd implications it has towards the future, if any. Odaâs planted too many seeds for it to utterly be nothing; thereâs so much odd and seemingly out of place comments and facts stated by Brook and others towards this missing history. However, knowing that the show is beginning to near itâs end, due to time, I am unsure of what exactly will be done.
I believe however, for folks' interest and so we can have everything in one place, that compiling everything found so far can be beneficial, so, I have.
Starting with what we know for sure, Brook is from the West Blue, born 90 years ago to a certain kingdom, the same kingdom he was a military convoy leader from. We know this due to a few factors, however itâs still open to debate if it *is* the same kingdom, however seeing as he was shown as a child to already know what fencing is, practicing moves with his bow, I am just going to say he probably was. In any case, other things worth noting, on the topic of childhood, is that Brook seems to have had money. At least, stability.
Compared to a lot of the other strawhats, Brook is shown dressing very nice. No tatters, no tears, shined shoes and a full violin and bow. He also, as already stated, seemed to be exposed to fencing enough to mirror the moves. If this comes from his kingdom, it means he was exposed to it at a young age. Knowing that he was a military convoy leader, this could be taken that perhaps there were military demonstrations, perhaps the kid saw castle guard or other displays; itâs really up in the air.
We know Brook, again as stated before, became a military convoy leader. Now, the definition of what exactly that means can differ.
Wikipedia states; A convoy is a group of vehicles, typically motor vehicles or ships, traveling together for mutual support and protection. Often, a convoy is organized with armed defensive support and can help maintain cohesion within a unit. It may also be used in a non-military sense, for example when driving through remote areas.
This could mean Brookâs job couldâve been accompanying ships for protection, being a knight for his King, mediating information and goods that come in and out of the kingdom. This would make sense on why his speed was needed, a 9.2 ft man being a great choice for a leader.
His weapon also would make sense for this kind of mission, perhaps secrecy being important or at least the ability to be discreet. His cane sword, a âShikomizueâ, is not unique however to just him in the show, one other man using one that has been confirmed so far, that being Fujitora. The pair also share a sea, the west, and both utilize iaijutsu (quick draw techniques.) Fujitora blinded himself with said sword because of something apparently so cruel and inhumane that he rather not see anguish. This may be related to Brookâs departure from his kingdom, which is addressed later in this essay. (Fig 3-5.)
Another thing thatâs worth mentioning here is Brookâs attack patterns, being unique even for his kingdom apparently. Once again, during the Ryuma fight, Brook states, and I quote;
âRyuma: âNow tell me, what part of that wretched excuse for a body would you like me to severe with my special âArrow Notch Slash?â Brook: You donât know a thing about that move, so do not use itâs name. I use to serve in my kingdomâs raider squad. The quick draw attack that I was most skilled at was âRequiem Lebanderoleâ. My comrades-in-arms renamed it in regards to my fighting technique.â
(Fig. 1, Brook explains his raider squad and move names. A banderole mind you is a long flag for BATTLE crusades. )
This sets up a few interesting facts. 1. Brook was in a raider squad, a kingdomâs group of marauders, as well as if not the same job as convoy leader.Â
2. His techniques were unique to him, or at least specialized to a degree of having a nickname. 3. As expected, he seems to have been close to these men he commanded, adding another layer over Brook loosing the Rumbars. Being in both a raider squad and being a convoy leader at one point, if not the same point, implies either Brook was simply versatile, acting in both in separate years or periods. Or, the most likely, that he was higher ranking than expected, making him a CO, or commanding officer. (Lieutenant Colonel is another equal rank for scale, making Brook just below a Major.) This makes him quite the important figure, especially for a kingdom that seems to value its military so much, so much so that a child of Brookâs age would already know about their style of fencing, as expressed already. Brookâs devil fruit is worth mentioning here, the revive-revive fruit not likely to be found by a crew like the Rumbars. It is spoken about as if he has always had it amongst the crew, being a fact of life. However, when did he get that fruit and why? I propose where it would be useful; in combat. If your military convoy leader, your best swordsman could be shot and come right back to protect the king, would he not be utterly invaluable? You would never let him leave⌠But he DID leave. Itâs not said why, however we have some extra tidbits of information that may tell us why, and that ALSO may tell us the answer to what kingdom he means.
( Fig. 2. Brook states his leaving of the military for unknown reasoning, the word certain being used in an odd way, establishing his bounty.) This bounty mind you all is in fact, using inflation method, 297,000,000 berries. That is a MASSIVE bounty for just a pirate. Perhaps a certain blond stole a treasure a kingdom could not replace; their convoy leader. Lets rewind for a moment and cover something that may be seen as off topic however I will come right back to the subject at hand; Calico Yorki. Yorki is an odd bird, pirate wise. He makes his crew read his bounties and information, is never shown to play an instrument/sing but makes his crew preform/they all do, and makes Brook make him dinner. (Steak, and Brook continues to be able to make it as confirmed by an SBS.) What is oddest yet, other than his large crew and shirtless habits, is his nature. A man that set to sea to play music for âorphans and crying childrenâ as stated by himself; a crew made for âany men who love music.â Now, I could be reading into this too hard, however from his speech patterns, to this apparent need for a large family, it seems that singing to orphans may be a very personal goal. An orphan turned pirate perhaps, with lofty dreams and a heart of gold, it reads to me that Yorki may have been just that. Knowing this, orphan or not, we now can compare these facts to Brookâs life up until their meeting. A child who probably grew up being taught to fight, being around access to education, expenses and the kingdomâs training. Why would a man like Brook ever join a man like Yorki, and if itâs only music, would that not make Brook a deserter? I do not think that is the case. I will now bring forward some interesting evidence regarding Brookâs kingdom and WHY he would leave. Germa 66. During Zou to Whole Cake, a few mentions of Germa are made with Brook around, garnering interesting reactions indeed.
( Fig. 3. Brook listens but chooses not to add anything utter than silence, his music pausing as well.) This silence could be take as simple ignorance, however Brook later admits he knows of the kingdom, in fact, he knows a lot. A lot more than anyone else did, Reiju admitting interest in his knowledge and once again, Brook brushes it off.
(Fig 4, 5, Brook speaks about Germa 66.) He seems to underplay or simply not elaborate a LOT on his kingdom, as if something happened. Perhaps joining Yorki was not out of simple cowardice or need to be free, (which again if he did would both reflect poorly upon his entire character and not be in character for him what so ever,) but in fact, out of necessity. It could have been Germa 66, it could have been some other grouping, however I believe this will come to be something important. The kingdom possibilities are interesting as well, and I will list the following LIKELY possibilities. (Other options are known to not be military, like Ohara, or literally places like Thriller Bark itself.) - Toroa - God Valley - Illsia Kingdom - Soja Kingdom The most likely candidates, because again, it is labeled as certain kingdom (Fig 2.) is Toroa or Soja, however I will personally lean into Toroa. This is because of a man by the named of Byron.
(Fig 6. Byron and his information.) His nose and face shape vaguely resemble Brook, however honestly that is a stretch. What is NOT however is his familiar attire, family line and the placement of his kingdom. This could easily be Brookâs home, however again, this is just speculation. Brook very well could belong to Godâs Valley, or the same kingdom as Issoh, fleeing because of something he did not agree with or literally could not stand any longer. But, that falls under possibility, not fact. This concludes the facts section, now comes the final question; What does it mean for the story? And, honestly, that can be debated. What Oda has done is plant odd seeds of information about the man, similar to Sanji and his ties to Vinsmoke, that have not been addressed nor talked about in full, or so Iâve found sufficiently. These seeds MAY bloom into what I hope will be a tie into some huge reveal, perhaps aid from a past member of his convoy or kingdom, or perhaps this will only spark conflict. Perhaps it will be minute, Brook being able to aid due to his knowledge, the man already in Thriller Bark showing his prowess by being able to command the strawhats into defeating zombies via salt and tactic. In any case, we can only hope these things mean anything, tied into some huge story that could explain why a man like him would quit for a redneck like Yorki, other than perhaps love, and what kingdom would let a man like him go willingly.

And Comes Dawn pt 13
Ship: Sauron/Halbrand x Reader
Plot: It's all for his Sweet one.
Word count: 2.5k
Tags: vomiting, manipulation, alludes to executions, sauron is a weird dude
Notes: this isn't super heavily edited bc im lazy. I wanted to write this part because ofc angst but I wanted to do the reveal before I fucked around with annatar and s2 stuff. I'll go back and forth now between before reveal and after.
Leave a tip if you want.
Halbrand sat on the bed you shared, water dripping from his hair and picking at the skin of his palms. It was a habit he had picked up from you. The moment you walked into the room, you could tell there was something on his mind. You waited for him to speak first, knowing that he would tell you his thoughts without you bothering him with questions. You didn't want to overwhelm him, after all. You simply waited for a few moments before he spoke.
âHave you seen Galadriel?â He asked, his voice was different than usual. Deeper. Almost darker. He didn't look at you, his eyes focused intently on a place on the floor.
âI have not.â You shook your head and approached him. âMy love, what is bothering you so?â
Halbrand wet his lips, âGaladrel has discovered my secret.â He must have suspected your confusion, for he continued. âI am not who she thinks. I am not who you think. I am no King of the Southlands.â
You sat next to him on the bed, your brow furrowed in confusion, but you took his hand and held it in yours, lacing your fingers with his. His thumb fidgeted with the ring on your finger, a subtle way of showing you he was there.
âYou do not have to be anything you do not wish to be. You know I will be by your side, whatever path you travel.â
He closed his eyes, shaking his head, âSweet one, you misunderstand.â
It seemed that he was trying to find words, but they would not come. You waited for him to speak, but a gnawing had begun in your stomach, an anxiety that started to become overwhelming. You squeezed his hand to remind him you were there, to remind him you cared but also to release the tension that was building inside of you.
âI am not the descendant of a king. I am not a man called Halbrand. I am not even a man.â
You furrowed your brow further as your mind swarmed with the possibilities of what he was saying. Unfortunately, none of your most outlandish thoughts could even scratch the surface of the revelation that was to come.
âWho are you then?â
âI've had many names,â He still could not bring himself to look at you. His palm was red at where he had been picking his skin. His voice changed again, to the most vulnerable you'd ever heard from him.
âMy first was Mairon. The Admirable. But the one you know me by, that all know me by, is Sauron.â
The world stopped for you in that instance. Your ears started to ring, and you felt sick. Everything your father had told you, every story you'd heard from the elves, or read in the books filled your mind all at once. Sauron the Deceiver, your father had called him the Deliverer as he would bring swift and violent justice to the elves and bring peace. The stories talked of his face changing. Of his ability to be whatever the person he was deceiving needed most. You could still see the handiwork of him and his master scared into the landscape of your home. You'd read of scores of elves and men and all forms of life that he had willfully murdered in pursuit of power.
That wasn't Halbrand.
Not your Halbrand.
You shook your head and scoffed, letting go of his hand. âThis isn't funny, Halbrand.â
He finally looked towards you, reaching for your hand once more and frowning when you pulled it away. âThat is not my name. You know it to be true. Search your soul.â
âNo, you're Halbrand. You are not him. You're not the great deciver. You are my Halbrand.â You rubbed your hands against your knees, trying to rationalize what he was saying.
Perhaps he was sick. Perhaps the fumes of the forge were affecting him. Or his wound wasn't fully healed, and the enemy poison was altering his mind.
âYou are not entirely wrong, my dear. I am yours and I have never decived you. Not like I have others. I have never lied to you, not about more than my name. I just omitted certain truths.â
You felt bile rise from your stomach to your throat, âNo. No, you said your father was a blacksmith.â
âAule, yes. Though he wasn't a father in the way that you think of a father.â
You swallowed thickly as your mind reeled with all the things he'd said of his family and past. His falling out with his âfatherâ and his uncle. If he was Sauron, truly, there was only one being that could be.
âThen your uncleâŚ.are saying your uncle wasâŚâ the name wasn't able to pass your lips.
âMorgoth. Again, not exactly the truth but as close as you could understand,â He spoke for you, and you're startled up and off the bed, pacing and shaking your head.
This was not possible. You could not believe this. This was your Halbrand. The man you loved. The man who had just a week prior made his intentions of marrying you known. You were to be married. You were absentmindedly fidgeting with the ring he had given you, spining it around your finger as you paced.
âYou cannot be he, he is dead. The uruk, Adar, said he killed him. There have been no signs of him for an age.â
He sighed, watching your pacing form. He seemed distraught almost. He could not feel anything like that if he was truly who he said he was. Sauron would not despair at the thought of your turmoil. Sauron would have no purpose in manipulating you. You could bring him nothing of gain.
Unless this was a reward for your fathers deeds. That small voice crept into your mind, and you did your best to push it the back. He was ill, that's why he was making this claim.
âHe left me for dead, and I stayed in that place for many lifetimes. I was neither dead nor alive, simply there. As dead as a being such as I can be. I wasted and waited, and suddenly, I felt solid. I could sense my surroundings. I could move, if only barely. It was a mystery. By all accounts, I should have remained in that purgatory forever.â
His fingers grasped yours, and the room around you disappeared, changing until it was a village. Or what was left of a village. Homes were burning, and the sounds or screams filled the air.
âNo.â You shook your head, tears welling up in the corners of your eyes. You clamped them shut and clasped your hands over your ears to drown the sound of the screams, but the smell of smoke and burning flesh filled your senses. You shook your head over and over. You wished the sight and sounds to be gone. You could not deny it now. No man could cause travel such as this.
He'd transported you to the night your family slaughtered the elves.
The night he'd regained just a semblance of his power.
Suddenly, you could sense light behind your eyes, and you were back on the raft at sea. Upon opening your eyes, his appearance had changed to the dirty rags he'd worn when you were stranded.
âIt felt like days, compared to the millenia I spent as nothing, but I have recently found out it was years. Years of gathering my strength to take on this form. 15 years, to be exact.â
Your lip tremebed, shaking your head. âNo. No, that's not true. That's notâŚno.â You were despretatley looking for an answer. âMy father did notâŚnoâŚâ
âHe did. I am indebted to him and his sacrifice. Not just for bringing me back but for you.â He approached you, the raft shaking under you with his movements.
You backed away from him, the bile rising in your stomach, and suddenly, you were retching. Your body bent in half as you vomited into the sea. You could feel him inside you. His love felt like sludge, weighing down your soul and moving through your veins. This could not be real, but you knew it was. He was too good to be true. He was exactly what you needed when he landed in your life. You were not worthy of the love of a king.
But it all made sense now.
There was nothing special about you. Not truly. He wanted his domination and control and power. You were inconsequential to that. He simply chose you because he knew who you were. This was some reward for your father. Tears pricked at your eyes.
You thought you were special. You thought this was love..
âIs it really so bad?â He spoke, placing a hand on your back. You hated how it felt. It was heavy and hot, and you wanted it off. You felt violated.
âI guess it is.â He answered his own question, his fingers wrapped around your chin and forced you to look at him.
âI did not deceive you. I love you. You are the only thing I have ever loved. I told the elf I would place a crown on her head, and that is true, but only because it would assist my true goal. To give the peoples of Middle Earth peace. To give you peace and safety, and stability. Your safety is more precious than any crown or title. All I do is for you. You are precious to me.â his fingers caressed your cheeks, and he smiled softly.
His smile made you sick.
âYou mean to enslave my people.â
âEnslave? No. I will free them from the binds of poverty and war and famine.â
âBy what means will you free them? It is not freedom if it is force.â
âAre you not listening?!â He boomed, lightning crashed behind him, and thunder boomed. The waves crashed over the raft. You yelped and flinched, closing your eyes tight again.
Once again, the world around you shifted. You were back in your room. Your lip trembled as you looked at him, tears falling from your eyes.
âSweet one, I'm sorry. Please. You need not fear me, sweet one. The world should fear but not you. Never you.â
You kept backing away from him. You did not know what to think. He was the villain of your history, og all the free people's history. He was evil. He was darkness. He was plauge and death and deciet. He could only destroy.
âIt was all fake.â
âNo! No. Don't you see, the only good in me is you.â He followed you until you were backed into a corner, your fingers splayed over the cold material of the wall. This is a reminder that this room was real.
You watched him for a moment, your mind replaying through every memory, but they were distorted now, as if you were watching a play. Your mind was reeling. Just hours early, you'd been in this room with him, talking of your wedding and cuddled into his chest.
âYou do this all for me, but you must now I can never be by your side as long as you intend to destroy.â You spoke with a sense of courage you had only just began to develop. Your heart was breaking, but you would not break in front of him. If he were to kill youâŚ..
âKill you? Do you think I mean to kill you? I could never kill you. In fact, I seek the opposite. I need you. If you can't be by my side, I must know you exist in this world, or I will be driven into madness!â
âHow do you read my thoughts?â Your voice was quiet, terrified.
âBecause you trust me. I trust you. I respect you. I never look into your mind unless I must. It is not so much reading your thoughts as it is being able to feel it.â
You shook your head, eyes closed tight.
âDo you truly insist on staying with the elves? Do you truly think they will not suspect you to have a hand in all this? That they won't do to you what they did to your family."
As he spoke, the room changed once more.
You were in an elven courtyard. Three men stood at the center. You could see where a little girl stood and watched confused and alone. You could hear Elronds pleas that this was abhorrent to make you watch, that he could not stay silent.
The memory froze. Your eyes looked upon your father for the first time in years. Tears dripped down your cheeks.
âYou never saw it. Elrond, ever the soft hearted, took you away, but you could hear it. The sound of your brother screaming. The crunch of their bones as they fell. How they had to take a sword to your uncle because he wouldn't die. Do you think you will be saved from their fate?â
You stayed silent, your jaw tight as you looked ahead and away from him.
âLook at me! Do not ignore me! I am trying to save you!â Lighting cracked again. His voice took a terrible tone as if he spoke from the depths of the abyss.
You shook your head, tears pouring from your eyes now. âWe were supposed to have a family.â
~
Your words were soft, quiet, and broken. It was enough that the fire inside of him calmed. The scene around you changed once more, and he simply looked at you.
His sweet one.
You were beautiful. He always had loved beauty and perfection, and you were both. And now you were scared, and he was the cause. He was never to be the cause, only to protect. It had frustrated him at first, infuriated that he could not seem to wish you harm, and if he ever did hurt you, he would apologize and feel guilt. He had hated it, but now, it was part of him.
He had two parts now, it seemed. The darkness and what little light he had left. The light was dying. He knew it. He could not stop the pursuit of these rings of control and power to bring peace and prosperity. He had to remake the world for you as well for his own selfish ambition. But the pursuit of these rings would make him truly unredeemable. It would destroy that last thread of good.
It was worth it. To protect you, anything was worth it. He would keep you safe, no matter the cost, no matter the loss of life. But that small part of him that was still a semblance of good, the part of him that you had resurrected, told him he could not force you with him. He could not clip your wings and force you in a cage. You had to come because you wanted to, you had to join him of your own will.
And you would, after the prosperity and peace, you would see it all to be worth it.
âI will never force you with me. I have never forced anything upon you. You will make that choice when you see the results.â He pressed a kiss to your head. âAnd when that happens, we will have our family.â
âI will fight against you.â
âYou will lose, but you wouldn't be the woman I love if you didnt fight at firstâ Another kiss, and then he looked over your features as if committing every one of them to memory.
âThis is all for you, sweet one. Do not forget it.â

Final Akane + AquaKane Thoughts
There are so many things to say that I don't even know how to start organizing my thoughts lol I'll also be including my final thoughts about the "love triangle" while I'm at it, so this is probably going to get long!
I've written quite a bit about Aqua/Akane this past year, so I won't be going into detail into any of the things I've already discussed up to now. Instead, I'll just focus on my thoughts on this final set of chapters, as well as my overall thoughts now that the manga is over.
I'll start with the (few) things I liked:
The Good
I mentioned before that I'm a sucker for parallels, and that Aqua/Akane having so many is one of the reasons why I couldn't help but ship them. We somehow got some very good ones in these last few chapters. We even got a scene at the Aqua/Akane bridge, the one where Akane's relationship with Aqua began and ended.
Aqua saved her life at that bridge, without any ulterior motives. And it's that very bridge that is pictured as Akane says that she has decided to live on. The imagery is poignant and pays its respects to not only Akane's arc as a character, but also to the Aqua/Akane relationship.
More than that, the parallels we got confirm things that Akane and Aqua/Akane fans like me have been saying all along:
Through it all, Akane saw him as he is and embraced the broken him. Each time, she willingly chose to get closer to him. When Aqua tells Akane that he has been saved ever since he met her, I get it. I have no doubt that for Aqua, who has been desperately fighting alone for so long, being seen and understood and loved despite all his self-perceived flaws and the darkness in him must have felt like salvation.
Akane is the one who knows Aqua the best, the one who knows him the most, the one who sees him exactly as he is and who loves all of him. Akane doesn't romanticize Aqua's flaws and his self-sacrificial nature, and neither does she idealize his virtues. She just accepts him and does her best to support and understand him through it all.
Akane being the only one who can see through Aqua's plan is enough to prove this, but it's actually not the most meaningful way in which Aka confirmed it. The most meaningful way was actually this:
Usually, whenever Akane thinks about Aqua, she calls him Aqua-kun. However, throughout her entire monologue in the last three chapters, Akane never addresses him by name. She just calls him "You". The same "You" (ĺ) that Aka emphasized in Chapter 63.
The "You" that encapsulates everything Aqua Hoshino was: both the Goro and the Aqua.
This was a very, very deliberate narrative choice that tells you that throughout the manga, Akane was the one who loved Aqua Hoshino exactly as he was.
Aka also uses another parallel to confirm that Akane was indeed lying to Kana when she claimed that she was over Aqua.
When she finally breaks down, Aka allows Akane to be honest about her feelings, and the parallel to the Aqua/Akane break-up tells us everything we need to know.
Akane never stopped loving Aqua. She has been in love with him all along.
Ever since they broke up, Akane has been sacrificing her feelings for Aqua in order to do what she thinks is best for him. Akane's priority has always been to see Aqua happy. She is willing to do whatever it takes to accomplish that. Back when she thought that Aqua needed to kill Kamiki, Akane was willing to shoulder that sin with him just so he wouldn't have to carry it on his own. When she realized that what Aqua truly wanted was to be free from his revenge, Akane was ready to deal with Kamiki on her own just so that Aqua wouldn't get his hands dirty. Then, when Aqua pushes Akane away, Akane becomes determined to stop him from killing Kamiki because she knows revenge is not what Aqua truly wants or needs.
But that's not all there is to it. Akane wants to be with Aqua, because she loves him. And it's precisely because she loves him, and because she thinks her love failed to save him, that she keeps her feelings to herself and is even willing to help another girl get close to him in her place.
So this chapter confirmed that the one who has been making the sacrificial play, the one who truly loved Aqua, was Akane. It is, essentially, the counterpart to Chapters 148 and 149.
It's no wonder, then, that Akane's feelings and her grief are the ones we follow immediately after Aqua's death. She goes to mourn him in the place he actually died, and when she's around his family, she keeps her pain to herself in order to not worsen their burden. We see her piece together what happened, we see her break, and then we see Akane put herself together and find some solace in knowing that Aqua kept her away to protect her.
Aqua is gone, and Akane is the only one to know Aqua's truth.
A lot of people spent the entire manga trying to downplay Aqua's relationship with Akane; claiming that it was a lie, a manipulation, or what-have-you. Now that the manga is over, we can say those claims were never proven.
At the contrary, until the very end, Aqua's thoughts & actions in regard to Akane were shown to back-up everything he said about her during their relationship.
Aqua could've lived if he had asked Akane for help in killing Kamiki, but he didn't want Akane to get her hands dirty for him. He broke up with her to not bring her down to hell with him, and when the options were to either die alone or make Akane bear the weight of a sin with him, the choice was quickly made.
At the end, he's even shown wanting the same thing Akane wanted: an equal relationship with her.
Unlike his thoughts about Kana (more on that later), which are just a 'might', this is something Aqua is purposeful about. It's something he is sure he wants. It's even the last thing he thinks of before wanting to see Ruby at the dome, which we all know was his dearest wish.
This also fits the panels chosen to be shown in the "romance" part of Aqua's montage: the moment he doesn't catch Kana's ball (symbolizing that their feelings don't connect) vs the moment where he chooses to kiss and date Akane for real.
Which brings us back to the moment they broke up. That chapter was titled "Going Astray" and we now saw where that wrong turn led Aqua: to his death.
So chapter 98, the Aqua/Akane break-up, is pretty much officially the chapter that leads us to the ending we got.
Which means that what I said back in this post still applies. If Aqua and Akane had been honest with each other during that phone-call in Chapter 97, things could've been different. But truth is, it's nearly pointless to think about it, because what this all comes down to is that Aka wanted this ending and he wanted it at all costs.
So nothing could have happened any other way, because Aka didn't want Aqua to be saved. He wanted Aqua to die so he could have his forced "bittersweet" ending.
This is why Aqua and Akane had to break up, it's why Akane is practically not allowed to interact with Aqua again after their break-up, and it's also why Akane never found out about Aqua being Goro's reincarnation.
Aqua was never meant to be saved, and Akane more than anyone could have saved him. So, of course, Aka couldn't allow her to do so. It's forced writing at its finest.
This is also why Akane isn't involved in Aqua's fatidic confrontation with Kamiki. While there is Aka's typical contrived writing involved in Akane leaving Aqua to his own devices at the most crucial moment, I do think it makes sense.
I've mentioned before that from the very beginning, Aqua and Akane's relationship has been based on trust and on choices.
Aqua once gave Akane a choice, trusting that she'd be able to choose what was best for herself. After Akane made her choice, Aqua did everything in his power to help her accomplish her goal.
Ever since, Akane has been trying to do the same for Aqua.
Akane wants Aqua to choose what's right for himself. She will always respect whatever it is that he chooses, as long as it is a true reflection of what he wants and needs. This is why Akane was eager to stop his plan to kill Kamiki, she could tell that Aqua was ready to sacrifice his own future to accomplish it.
That's why, once Aqua chooses to let Kamiki live, Akane is reassured.
Something has changed in Aqua. Akane notices this and believes that Aqua has, finally, chosen to not throw his life away just to deal with Kamiki. She trusts that he has.
Personally, I'd like to believe that Akane was right. Problem was that once Aqua knew for sure that Kamiki couldn't be saved, he switched back to his original plan. Something Akane couldn't have foreseen without knowing that Aqua was the reincarnation of a dude whose issues made him suicidal... which is yet another reason why Aka could have never let Akane find out about the whole reincarnation business.
So all in all, Aqua/Akane-wise, this is all well and good. On paper.
When it comes to the execution however, it leaves a lot to be desired, because Aqua/Akane is sadly majorly brought down by the spectacular way in which Aqua's character was (mis)handled during the second half of the manga.
The Bad
Goro has always been someone who thinks his life has no worth, and this belief is deeply ingrained into Aqua. That's why I could tell that his revenge plan likely involved killing himself and making it look like Kamiki did it.
I just didn't think that he would actually succeed, because it kind of goes without saying that the suicidal character getting to kill himself is far from being a satisfying ending. Even less so when said character has shown time and time again that he actually wants to live, he is just too broken by his guilt complex to believe he has that right.
For a while there, it even looks like Aqua will make it. That he has once again started to embrace that this is a life that he wants to live.
Sadly, once Aqua realizes that Kamiki can't be saved and that he poses a danger to Ruby, all of that flies off the window and "Goro" takes over. And by "Goro" I don't mean Goro the character, I mean all the bad habits that Aqua has due to his guilt-complex and survivor's guilt.
So Aqua goes and executes his original plan, killing himself instead of looking for a better solution. Which means he started off like this:
Only to end the manga pretty much the same way, except you can switch "If Ai's gone, this world isn't-" for "As long as Ruby can live on in this world."
Though, actually, it's even worse than that, because Aqua realizes that he was wrong â dying would bother him â only when it's too late.
It leaves a bad taste in my mouth because it's like Aqua had no development through the entire manga. Cut everything after his break-up with Akane and nearly nothing changes, except the motive behind Aqua throwing his life away: protecting Ruby (Sarina) instead of revenge.
It all feels even more pointless because Aqua's death rings hollow due to how badly his character was mishandled in the second half of the manga. After the break-up, Aqua becomes a "..." bot. His character isn't allowed to grow and neither is he allowed to explore his feelings in any meaningful way, to the point that he dies confused and not knowing who he was.
Pardon my bluntness, but how pathetic is this? 160+ chapters and literally none of this guy's issues were ever solved. His character goes nowhere, only so he can be sacrificed to make the ending bittersweet for Ruby. Though for me it wasn't even bittersweet; the ending fell flat on its face precisely because Aqua's character never goes anywhere, so it's hard to feel anything other than vague frustration and disbelief at how forced the writing is.
Even the Kami/Ai - Aqua/Akane parallels were wasted because both ships ended up in the exact same way: Akane and Ai both unable to save Aqua and Kamiki. I wouldn't even be surprised if those parallels are something Aka came up with on the spot while writing the Ai DVD.
I'm sure some Aqua/Akane truthers will say "all Aqua and Kamiki needed to be saved was to be with Akane and Ai, and Akane and Ai didn't realize that" and leaving aside my issues with that kind of co-dependency, once again, that's all well and good â on paper.
Sure, those of us who ship Aqua and Akane could see it that way if we wanted to, but... did Aka make a point of clearly stating this? No, he left it to the reader's imagination, which means it's just another blank to be filled with headcanon.
Personally, I'm pretty tired of doing that, because everything there is to like about the manga may as well just be the headcanons we have filled all those blanks with.
I always say that I prefer showing and not telling, but there's a limit to everything. Truth of the matter is, if this was supposed to be the case â and especially if it was supposed to be important â then showing isn't enough. Because the majority of readers aren't going to spend hours breaking down every single Aqua/Akane interaction to draw those parallels and reach that conclusion.
Aqua dying soothed by a song by his favorite idol (Ruby/Sarina) doesn't really do it any favors either, because fact of the matter is that people who were never invested in the Aqua/Akane relationship will just assume Aqua never loved Akane back. They'll be more distracted by Kana's tropey, shallow shoujo romance, and this is something Aka allowed in his manga right up to the very end.
Aqua and Akane were the only relationship in the entire manga that got mutual, gradual, organic, continuous development. But this all came to a halt when they broke up, so at the end of the day, they're mostly left up to interpretation.
It's underwhelming.
Most of all, if you ask me, it was a terrible move, because Aqua and Akane could've been the heart of this manga. If their feelings had been properly explored after their break up, if Aqua had been allowed to think of Akane in his last moments, if all this blank-filling had been actual text, they'd have been a tragic love-story for the ages.
But Aka didn't want it to be the heart of the manga, because he had already decided from the beginning that role should go to Aqua and Ruby. Alas, he completely failed at developing that, too, because to the very end there's only Goro and Sarina. That is the entire basis of the Aqua/Ruby relationship and dynamic, and it gets one single chapter where it's explored beyond that, only to immediately focus back on Goro and Sarina as Aqua lies dying.
Goro couldn't save Sarina in his first life, so he wastes his second to do it. He jumped at the chance to free himself of the burden of that guilt without even bothering to think of how much his death would hurt the very person he wanted to protect.
Which takes me to...
The Ugly
Turns out Kana was pretty much just a mixture between Fujiwara and Maki, after all. Except that unlike Maki, she never grows (Aqua literally has to die for her to do so) and unlike Fujiwara, she's overused instead of underused.
Aqua and Kana are portrayed as shallow to the end, and I'd even go as far as saying that the narrative pokes fun at Kana for it. Even during the funeral, she puts on a hat that's reserved for family members and it literally falls off her head when Miyako slaps her lmao
Since this is a manga and not real life, the way Kana's outburst was handled in that chapter is likely meant to be contrasted with the way Akane's own grief was handled, because it pretty much embodies all the differences between both of their relationships with Aqua through the manga.
Kana is focused on herself and on her pain. She thinks Aqua was murdered, but she still irrationally blames him for it, too blinded by her own pain. Aqua was murdered, but not being able to confess to him properly is still at the top of her list of grievances. She is also shown overplaying that one conversation she had with Aqua about Aqua having a death-wish, as if Aqua somehow agreeing to not say that he wants to die was some vital promise that he broke.
Meanwhile, Akane focuses on Aqua. On what Aqua felt, on why he did what he did, and on what he would have wanted. Even her wish to be by Aqua's side is expressed through Akane saying that she'd have been willing to shoulder his burdens with him, no matter where that led them. It is also Akane's understanding of Aqua that helps her to find some solace and to overcome his death.
Kana always looked at Aqua from the outside-in, idealizing and romanticizing him, while Akane was Aqua's partner in every sense of the word. That's why Akane gets all the insightful narration about Aqua while Kana just gets to make a fool of herself at his funeral.
So to the very end, the dichotomy between "Ai" and "Koi" does perfectly illustrates the contrast between the two sides of the Aqua love triangle.
Kana was infatuated with the Aqua that she built up in her head, and focused on what she wanted Aqua to do for her (support her unconditionally), and what she wanted to be for him (his only idol), rather than on Aqua himself as a person.
As for Aqua, during his last moments, most Aqua can say about Kana is that it might be good to respond to her feelings. Might. He spends the entire story knowing Kana is at his beck and call, he even makes fun of her for it (you're so easy to manipulate, yadda yadda), yet when the opportunity to date her presents itself, most he can say is essentially "it could be cool I guess." He even pictures her pulling on his arm to get his attention, while with Akane, he pictures himself facing her and looking straight at her.
So to Aqua, Kana was at most a teenage crush. His feelings for her weren't deep or relevant enough to have any sort of impact on his character, while he outright called the year he spent dating Akane his happy days. An entire year that he spent without Kana even being in his life, mind you. Meanwhile Kana was out there living an entire shoujo where she's the heroine and Aqua is the male lead đ
That said, I still think Aqua, who I'm sure must've broken a record at being bad at understanding his own feelings, was likely mistaking admiration for romantic attraction, and that he would've realized this pretty early into dating Kana.
The anime is even clearer about this because Aqua's reactions to Kana are paralleled to Akane's who is, quite literally, a fan of Kana.
But even if he wasn't, it doesn't really matter, because it's shown very clearly that Aqua deeply values being understood (to him, it feels like salvation) and that Kana doesn't really understand him. So had they dated, Aqua would've had fun at first, sure, but his emotional needs wouldn't have been met; instead his job would've been to meet Kana's. It just would've never worked in the long term.
Now that the dust has settled, I can say for certain that if Aqua had been allowed to have a happy ending, it'd have been with Akane.
So once more, this is all fine on paper. The problem is that Aka takes it too far. The whole Kana business takes too much panel time for no discernible reason other than to... bait readers? I've even seen some say that Aka intended to mock them.
But even if that were the case, considering that those same readers are likely going to walk out of the story thinking Aqua and Kana are a tragic ship that loved each other because of all the bait, who's really the butt of the joke? Them or Aka himself?
Conclusion
I've always been pretty clear about being an Akane fan first and foremost. Despite all my Aqua/Akane meta, I had no emotional investment in whether she ended up with Aqua or not, as long as she got a satisfying ending. That said, by principle, I most definitely didn't want Aqua to end up with Kana, because that'd be like rewarding Kana for all her crying and whining when she never even tried to understand who Aqua was as a person and I've already gone through that in Naruto, thank you very much.
So the two silver-linings about this ending are that Akane stayed amazing to the end, and that Kana didn't have Aqua handed to her on a silver platter. But considering just how much panel time Kana's meaningless crush takes up in the narrative and how side-lined Akane got after the break-up, it feels like a pyrrhic victory lol
Akane is still the best thing about the manga, and I'd say that she got by far the best ending of the bunch. I'm not sure if I'd call it satisfying, because Akane's one goal was always to save Aqua and she didn't get to accomplish that. But at the very least, she got a good ending, all things considered. She got to protect what Aqua entrusted to her, and she got to show just how emotionally strong she is.
As for Aqua and Akane, AquaKane could've been incredible if only Aka had done them justice, but he didn't. I joked before that the Aqua/Akane development was so good that it's like it wrote itself, and I actually think that's exactly what happened. Aka made things up as he went along, and he allowed Aqua and Akane to develop together in ways he didn't necessarily plan nor foresee. But as soon as he started heading towards the ending he envisioned, he dropped the ship, likely because he had already established everything that would be relevant about them by then, and then proceed to leave a lot of it to the discretion of the readers.
While I'm sure that'll be enough for some, I'm afraid it's not really enough for me. If you were to ask me if I'm satisfied with the way they were handled, my answer would be: not really, but it certainly could've been worse lol
In my opinion, they're the biggest wasted potential in the manga (which is saying something, because the entire manga is wasted potential), and their potential was wasted simply because they're the ones who could've actually led us to a happy ending.
Aka didn't want that ending, though. He cared for his vision more than about his characters, and his vision was literally just an ending where poor Ruby would be a star that shines brighter "the darkest things get". Nothing else mattered. LMAO. As if Ruby hadn't already gone through enough!
Oh well, at least we're finally free!
#akane kurokawa#aquakane#aquaka#my aquakane meta#fandom: onk#it's finally over!!#I'm free!#I love you Akane but reading this manga was a nightmare lmao#I suspect some of this may not be what fellow aquaka fans want to read#but I've been honest about my thoughts all this time and I didn't want to be dishonest now lol

I love this moment. Itâs just perfect in showing Stedeâs neurodivergence, and the power of his honesty.
I love the easy familiarity of Stede calling Ed by his name in front of Izzy, as if theyâre old chums already.
I love âDo you know this guy?â, as if Izzy just keeps popping up randomly and annoyingly, this the third time now. And Stedeâs saying, âOh, there you are my new best friend, Ed. I keep having a problem with this little shit, and now bizarrely heâs on my ship. Any chance of some help in dealing with him? Not sure where he keeps coming from tbhâ - as he surely canât be here because of Ed. Because why on earth would Ed and Iggy know each other?
I love Stedeâs earnestness in believing in the authenticity and firmness of his and Edâs friendship already - over whomever this individual is (and Stedeâs, of course, correct).
Stedeâs disgust making him all sexy cross-eyed
And I love the honesty of âHeâs a complete assholeâ (Rhys actually says arsehole, the British or Antipodean pronunciation, which makes it all the funnier to me). Stede knows nothing of who Izzy is to Ed. Ed might not just know Izzy, but regard him highly. But Stede just says it as he sees it because heâs Stede. He canât and doesnât mask, nor believe he needs to. Good for him.
And just imagine Ed hearing an outsiderâs perspective after years of insular interaction. Ed knows at his core Izzyâs an arsehole or worse. But cognitive dissonance plus trauma will make you doubt. Edâs kept, or been kept, largely from the world for some time. Any insight into how Izzy is perceived - feared, respected, well-known - probably comes from Izzy himself; but there might also be some truth in it. Geraldoâs pretty deferential (possibly due to the reflected glory of Izzyâs boss). Jackie listens to his British plan and goes along readily. Rickyâs heard of him, and certainly seems to think the great Israel Hands is worth sharing one final drink with even if he toys with him.
Izzy carries himself with the swagger of the bully he is, and a lot of people will bend or get out of the way for that. I should imagine Izzy is still baffled as to how a frilly-shirted, lavender-scented âponceâ like Stede Bonnet isnât grovelling before him.
Edâs probably viewed Izzy through a distorted, secondhand lens for a while now. Or heâs too enmeshed to acknowledge the truth of whatâs before him; too broken by the abuse and lack of self-worth.
Then Stede Bonnet comes along. Stede, who has weighed, measured and understood the contours of Edâs soul, and declared it âgoodâ, within minutesâŚ
Well, heâs weighed, measured and understood someone elseâs soul too. Called it correctly again: Izzy Hands is a complete arsehole.
#stede bonnet#neurodiversity#weigher of souls#if it quacks like a duck#no filter#i love him#104#ofmd

so sick and tired of people writing fics about jeremy treating kevin like shit over kevin leaving jean at the nest like that is either 1) in character 2) something jean would appreciate or 3) fair. do you even bother to read the books youâre writing fanfic about or is the urge to create cheap angst so overwhelming you canât see past the tropes you write for every other fictional pairing you like? the idea that jean would appreciate jeremy going out of his way to poke old wounds in his and kevinâs relationship when jean himself does not even like for jeremy to joke about kevin near him is absurd, and thatâs without mentioning the fact that jeremy is not so clueless as to think he has any idea of what the nest was like, or why kevin felt he had to leave the way he did. if you need something to make your ship more interesting thinking beyond your flat interpretation of it is a lovely start, but donât use kevinâs name and storyline if youâre just going to butcher it for the sake of a milquetoast sob fest the characters involved in would not even appreciate
#seriously annoying this is the third time i see this trope and its ridiculous#im sorry you feel the need to include jeremy in every aspect of jeans life to make up for his lack of one in tsc but dont think#for one second that this person who has not experienced even a fraction of the nest#would have the right or the inclination to tell kevin and jean how to deal with it#jean literally says on page in tsc that he does not want jeremy to ask questions or meddle any further and youâre creating scenarios#where jeremy literally ignores jeanâs wishes and does just that?#what part of âand now i donât feel safe with you captainâ do you not get?#however complicated kevins and jeans relationship is do you really think jean would want jeremy to get involved with it?#think whatever you want about kevin but if you need his name to come up with a good storyline for your ship maybe youâre just#bad at what you do#txt#sorry about the rant but sometimes this fandom really makes me want to believe there is a hell out there

hey there, how do you feel about clark/dick and other ships with dickie and the JLA
hi!!! i *love* Clark/Dick!!! i think there's so many fun ways to do that ship, it can be very fucked up and almost incest-y, playing up the "Uncle Clark" bit, but also i'm personally very personal to Clark/Dick that happens when Dick is Batman and Clark is coping with his grief over Bruce and trying to fill that hole with Dick. it's fun even if Superbat never happened and Clark's feelings for Bruce were entirely platonic and things just get tangled in the mess of trying to treat Dick like an adult while also still not seeing him as big enough to fill Bruce's shoes. it's a delightful age and power gap, where Clark's respect for Dick is always going to be founded in a mentor-type bond which makes them so messy.
and it's super fun to play with Clark giving Dick the name Nightwing and how much Clark had to trust Dick with something so Kryptonian. he helped raise Dick almost as much as Bruce did and was a guiding figure for Dick during Bruce and Dick's worst times. which is so fun, if the person Dick goes to when he's pissed at Bruce ends up being someone he's romantically/sexually entangled with. because there's always going to be the questionable age gap and how they met, no matter how old Dick is when they "officially" get together. i could really see Dick sleeping with Clark to get back at Bruce during Dick's Discowing era, and it ends up causing complicated feelings either of them are willing to confront. in general i like the complicated feelings of Clark/Dick the most in any version of this ship. there's at least a dozen obstacles keeping them apart, so their relationship would be difficult and rocky to make work. they don't always agree and their relationship isn't as wholesome as it seems on the surface. Clark reacted *wildly* negatively to Dick as Batman when it first happened. he likes Dick, but i think it's really fun to play with Clark being averse to viewing Dick as an autonomous adult and how that affects them ad a ship.
as for other JLA ships with Dick, i'm open to just about any but don't really have developed thoughts besides Dick/Oliver. i think Oliver'se deep dislike for Bruce combined with his concern for how Bruce raises his sidekicks could work so well with an accidental relationship. like, Oliver keeping in touch with Dick and trying to form a mentoring bond just to make sure Dick isn't too controlled by Bruce and is well taken care of, and having that accidentally spiral could be so fun. because Oliver would be *horrified* and it'd conflict with him morally, even if Dick was a consenting adult. that's his son's best friend, and now they're sleeping together? Oliver keeps trying to break it off but he can't seem to stop. Dick is like a bad habit. it's fucked up and that's half the fun of it, the taboo nature. i also think Oliver would emotionally provide very well for Dick, who's trying to figure out how to exist on his own without Bruce. it'd be very "best friend's dad core" with all the age gap comments from Oliver while he's kissing Dick and how his love for Dick will always be just *slightly* tainted by that fatherly love. i think it's fun and fucked up.
i do sort of like Hal/Dick. but like. 80s/90s Hal who kind of sucked and was full of unaddressed bigotry and did some fucked up things like dating that teenage girl. like if you want a ship *full* of repressed internalized homophobia and "well i'm not gay this doesn't count" complexes, i think this works remarkably well. Hal is morally questionable enough to fuck Dick regularly and Dick still crawls back to him, even as Hal is in complete denial about his own sexuality and makes vaguely homophobic comments about Dick, while fucking Dick. just a grown ass man projecting all of his issues onto the 20-something hero who just wants a good fuck. i'm a big fan of Dick fucking older men who are cruel to him, almost as a form of cathartic self-harm. and you can pull that off pretty well if you work with Hal at his most asshole-ish era. like imo this ship could get *really* fucked up. especially if you played with like. Parallax stuff. also you know. the joy of Lantern Rings during sex.
lastly, i don't think he quite counts as JLA sine he's more Justice League of China, but. Kenan Kong, Superman of China. i have a *really* stuck in my head brainworm shipping him with Dick. they don't have much interaction, *but* i've had this idea of Kenan hearing the jokes about "every Super has a Bat" when he joins the Superfam and he decides it's his right to claim a Bat. and since Dick doesn't really have a Super, Kenan just. decides Dick is his. and forms what Dick thinks is a genuine friendship with the end goal of sleeping with Dick, consensually or not. i think it could be fun, playing into how Kenan used to be a really big asshole. hopefully I'll write it eventually, though i'm not sure how interested in it people would be since it's such a rarepair idea. but what am i if not a dealer of rarepairs.
#necrotic answerings#dead dove do not eat#clark kent x dick grayson#clarkdick#dick grayson x oliver queen#olliedick#dick grayson x hal jordan#haldick#dick grayson x kenan kong#kenandick#ig that's the ship name now i've dubbed it so#i birthed it i get to name it i think.#i've been more and more into clark/dick recently tho#justbc of the dicked down discord server being full of *such* good clark/dick food#one day i'll be brave enough to be active over there and share my kenan idea#i'm currently not brave but#someday i will be#i feel like i need a tag for ppl aksing my opinions on ships#idk what that tag would be tho#and i'd have to go back and add that tag so#that'd' be annoying.

Actually I really wanna write a role reversal gerrymichael au and let me be so, so transparent when I say it is literally just bc I wanna fantasize about the tall, gangly blond man beating monsters to death
Everyone else has the same roles. Mary Keay is still Mary Keay in all her abusive and obsessive glory; Gertrude is still the Archivist.
Vaguely spiral aligned Michael who Does Not Like It. Pretends his connection is a hell of a lot looser than it is.
The only benefit (that Michael thinks of the Spiral) is how he can move around the Institute with relatively little interference and watch, after all, it is hard to behold something that is both nothing and everything and never was all at the same time.
Gerry ran away from home really young and actually succeeded. Spent a few years fucking around and learning what kind of benches are best to sleep on before applying to the Magnus Institute because that's what his dad did. He lied to hell and back on the application, but was hired quickly because of how thoroughly touched by the entities he was (thanks Mary) and Gertrude was running low on assistants. Gerry also felt completely justified in faking stuff and that he was perfectly qualified bc he grew up in a bookshop and how much different could it be (very different, as it turns out).
They first meet each other when Michael is prowling through artefact storage like it was a shopping mall, and pocketing everything he saw that didn't immediately mesmerize him. He was nervous and jumpy as all hell, even though this was not the first time he's done something similar and he's fairly certain Gertrude doesn't care, so when Gerry first spotted him from behind, he was immediately suspicious even before he saw Michael try to shove a lamp into his jacket pocket. This led to an altercation that eventually led to the lamp being accidentally turned on, Michael smashing it to pieces with a hammer Gerry had not realized Michael had, and Gerry suddenly being a lot more consciously aware of the supernatural than he was.
Gerry's mother was still obsessive over Lighteners, and she didn't make an effort to hide what she did, but she didn't actively try to educate Gerry on anything to do with the Fears. So he is fairly knowledgeable on the supernatural, but he doesn't know anything concrete about the Fears themselves and their categorization. The role of a stand by sacrifice instead of an errand boy and heir.
Michael still trusts Gertrude, but this time he knows he shouldn't and hates himself for it. Gerry wants to trust Gertrude, and she does hide him from anything Fears related and behaves around him like she did Michael in cannon, but he just feels something off about her and doesn't like it. She's just a bit too much like his mother for him to let his guard down.
Michael gets referred to by "it/its" pronouns once by Gerry as a teasing joke before Gerry fully knows what he is and is absolutely terrified by how happy the pronouns make his feel. (He thinks, maybe, that the Michael of his childhood liked something similar, too, but everything too far back is all twisted and he doesn't know what has been touched by the Spiral and what hasn't, so he doesn't trust any of it). He/it Michael ftw
At one point Michael just started putting black lipstick on himself because some of Gerry's always stuck to him when they kissed anyways n this gave them plausible deniability. Michael will never admit to the little spiral thrill it gives him when people do a double take upon seeing his face, the black lipstick contrasting literally everything else about his style.
Gabriel attempted to track Michael down exactly once, a few years before he joined the institute. He had heard about Michael's unsavory... Hobby... (<- reckless destruction of artefacts and throwing himself at all monsters and avatars he sees with a murderous rage regardless of their affiliation) but spiral avatars capable of holding a conversation are so few and far between and the Great Twisting was almost prepared, so he thought a meeting would be worth it. He showed up at a cafe Michael frequented one day expecting lovely, but tense, conversation, only to promptly lit on fire (mostly) in the back alley behind the cafe after he introduced himself. Gabriel survived, but some of his clay body still hardens unexpectedly or shows signs of firing from time to time.
Occasionally Michael's eyes will change colors and shapes, so he likes to put contacts in (he used to just use tinted glasses, but after one time of Gerry getting lost in his eyes in the far too literal, not at all romantic, sense, he decided to invest in smth a bit harder to take off and forget about). Unfortunately, this sometimes means other, very much not his original eyes will pop up around his body and in his hair as protest when he puts them in. It's not very fun to have to chase off eyes at 6am, but he does it regardless and complains the whole time about how he shouldn't have to deal with eyes when he very clearly isn't of The Eye.
Gerry: Oh hey you were running pretty late. I was starting to get worried.
Michael, not about to admit he spent an extra thirty minutes to get ready yelling and brandishing a lighter at a door that was following him around like a lost puppy: Ummmmmm I forgot my wallet. :((
#this has been in my drafts for ages so now I'm releasing it into the world so it's easier to find and therefore I remember to write it#gerrymichael#gerard keay#michael shelley#<- his personality is v much a mix of Distortion Michael and Michael Shelley with a leaning towards Shelley#the most 'I have no fucks left to give' man with extreme social anxiety#the ONLY reason Michael n Gerry did not meet in a cafe was bc Michael accidentally entered all the ones by the institute when he#had blood on him and was too embarrassed to go back#Gerry and Michael's first date is burning a spiral Lightner <333 Only Gerry thinks of it as a date and remebers it fondly.#Michael is still sad he couldn't do something normal with Gerry first#Oh!!! and idk if I made it clear enough but Michael does NOT hunt Lightners!!! He mainly goes after artefacts and monsters/avatars#Also this entire au was inspired by me dreaming of Michael (Shelley) beating the shit out of Jude Perry and one hit causing boiling wax#to spray up and hit him in rhe face. and just. him looking dizzy and far out and idly sticking his finger into the wax on his face and#swirling it around so it scars as a spiral. bc he thinks that is much Much prettier. Before he snaps out of it and gets very horrified with#himself very fast.#the magnus archives#NOT tagging this w the other ship name bc this is not distortion/door Michael#The Distortion is free of having been contained into a person (for now. Gertrude may try to throw Gerry into it during the Great Twisting)#n loves tormenting Michael Shelley (affectionate) n having tea with Gabrial n living its best lack of life while preparing for their ritual#lemme know if anyone else needs 2 b tagged.

i think if army ever figured out national guard was crushing on maryland he'd tease him SO FUCKING HARD but like. try to wingman. but be fucking abysmal at it because he's him. and also he's still very much embarrassing him on purpose because it is his duty as the bigger sibling. nat feels so embarrassed but maryland finds it kind of cute how army is so obviously trying.
army: did you know my brother once saved puppies from a burning building
nat: [shoots him a glare]
army, getting the wrong message: the burning building was an orphanage btw
nat: [elbows him and is desperately trying to shut him up without making a scene]
army: the president gave him five medals for it. they had to make up a new one just for him
maryland, very amused: oh? is that true?
nat: [yanking army down to his level and covering his mouth before he can make it worse] sorry he hit his head really hard before he came out here i don't know what he's talking about
army, muffled: he's really humble
and then they start fighting and maryland just watches on with a grin and shakes his head
#wttt#army#national guard#maryland#i love nat x maryland sm frown emoji#do they have a ship name? i need a tag#uhh#maryguard#good enough for now#i think they're one of the very very few ships i perceive as romantic. there's some queerplatonicism in there ofc but STILL!!!#i think maryland is the only state to know every branch. sans maybe space force#i think he's super good buddies with navy as well#but this is in the tags bc that's for another post muahahaha

Time to go do more of the quests for relic info! We left Blackdragon and Socks (the other two competent fighters besides Vasso and Laursen) at home to guard the base.
Vasso definitely could have done this one alone, though. It was ridiculously easy.
Garfo: A tragedy in three parts
And lastly, everything turned red for a bit. It was very cool! I confess I haven't played with sanguophages yet. Perhaps that's something to look into after my mechanitor run.
Bonus shot of Parish-by-the-Expanse under the Blood Moon because I thought it looked pretty.
