hi love! i need writing advice and i figured who better than to ask than little miss insane writing incredible prose world shattering dialogue?? anyways: everything ive ever written is character based. the plot is the characters and the relationships they have with each other, with any events designed to catalyze these relationships, trigger character development, serve as background noise or pretty environments, or to generally disguise that it is all about the characters. i am CURRENTLY writing an actual plot. like a grade a, "seven basic plots - the quest" plot. meaning the story is more important than the characters, which is first. how on EARTH do i do that??

anyways, i feel so incredibly flattered u came to me for writing advice but i'm . so not very qualified . i should be the one making this questions to YOU because your writing is absolutely mindblowing and i admire u so much it's actually a bit concerning

to be honest, i also struggle a lot with stories that have complicated plots and heavily rely on it bc i'm also a character-driven writer. in fact, one of my wips, the fucked up road trip fic, is just like this and i'm actually terrified of actually starting it bc of this reason. i feel like i'm gonna mess up so badly bc it's so hard for me to focus more on . the story than the characters and their relationships

my approach to this is to . first outline the whole plot without giving too much thought to the characters. like yes, they need to be there and you're gonna have to mention them while outlining BUT try to keep it to a minimum, it's enough if u know where they are and what they're doing during each arc. the point is to have your whole story written down so u know what u wanna do and where u wanna take it. after that, it's just a matter of . figuring out how the events affect each character, and how these experiences shape them. you used to come up with stuff just so they could grow in the direction u wanted them to, but now the plot is More Important, and it has to happen a certain way regardless of what the characters want or need. which is also fun in its own way!! they still matter and they're still there and they're still gonna change and evolve. but this time, they're the ones supporting the narrative, and not the other way around yk?? idk if i'm making any sense, i don't tend to write plot heavy stories bc it absolutely drives me up the wall

I went through a phase of real baby fever when I was younger, and it's waned a lot over the years but still pops up again every now and then. But at a certain point a few years ago, for various reasons, I came to the decision/realization that I most likely won't have kids and it was remarkable to me how much processing that was a kind of grieving. Like, somehow I hadn't expected it to feel like that. And it is a strange thing to see other people living out something that you have let go of for yourself—it can be hard to wrap your brain around it, I think. It sometimes feels unfair, even if those feelings aren't justified. But what's your path is yours and what's their path is theirs and it is what it is.

Anyway. One of my siblings was expecting a baby this year and the pregnancy had to be terminated for medical reasons, and I was surprised all over again by how much I cried my fucking heart out over it. The pain of that family loss is still fresh, and twice now since then I've seen a happy pregnancy announcement and immediately spiraled into really rough waters—even though the rational part of my brain is of course happy for them and I want all good healthy things for them. It just. Is hard to find the joy through the grief and jealousy. And that's how it is right now.

sure! i'll do my best but just to be transparent, for something like this it can be hard to give perfect advice because i do not know the entire picture (your dog's personality and body language, your dog's stressors/distractions, the environment, etc).

but here are some general tips for better engagement with ur dog!

and this is my #1 tip for every dog owner in general. before we ask ur dog to ignore the exciting, distracting world out there, we have to give them an outlet to explore it. i recommend (if feasible) a dedicated 3 hours minimum weekly of free walking for ur dog. this usually looks like walking them on a LOOONG leash (i use a 50 foot one) in a wide open space like a park or trail and allowing them to roam and sniff with very low expectations and almost no training. this does a couple things! it fulfills that biological need ur dog has to sniff and explore, is enriching, and it helps the novelty and excitement of the world wear off a little bit for when u need them to pay attention to u! (also directly after a sniffy walk is a GREAT TIME to do a 5 minute training session outside to practice some skills bc they are tired, just got done sniffing, and are much more likely to pay attention and really learn!)

bring better treats! when the world is exciting and distracting, i pull out the good stuff. cheese, lunchmeat, chicken, baby food in a squeeze tube. the high value stuff!

start inside, in a low distraction environment and practice an eye contact cue! eventually as this skill becomes stronger, u can start to cue it on walks to refocus ur dog!

engagement games! there's tons on youtube, and as always when teaching ur dog something new, start inside with no distractions and slowly work up to practicing the skill outdoors

bringing a special toy that they only have access to on walks, having him play and engage with you while you're walking helps build value in YOU as the handler and decrease value in all those fun distractions!

adding a cut bc hah. aha. im normal.

once upon a time i was talking in the DMs with a friend about betas in omegaverse sex trafficking/breeding rings (essentially being given to omegas as comfort objects) and i got a Very Specific mental image of a mutual noncon scenario, of a beta+omega+one to two alphas. my friend says "is this juicier if the beta wanted the omega. and now is bitter that some random alpha is fucking them better than the beta ever could. even when the omega is trying to beg for the beta. is that anything" and i knew in my heart of hearts i had to make this tim/dick. like the concept had me up the walls so fast.

THEN it got wayyyy longer. like several pages worth of DMs about a ra's/tim/dick plot. which is what im working on rn. current title is 'Nature's Order (As Told From Alpha To Beta)' which Will make sense i swear. i have an outline started and a few context-less lines already.

like i said my notes are literally pages and need to be whittled down but im gonna try and explain it without making an entire essay about a fic i havent even written yet.

I have something of a ‘main’ omegaverse AU in my mind, and in that one Tim unlearns his shitty thinking via dating Omega!Steph and having some eye opening heart to hearts. (and getting pegged also helped.) This fic is essentially one huge butterfly effect where Tim and Steph never meet and instead of Steph teaching him about omegas it’s… Ra’s. It goes about as well as you’d think it would.

But even before Ra's, Tim is a bit. hm. sexist in a way that people usually ignore bc he'll "grow out of it". and he's also just very quiet about it bc he sort of knows that it wouldn't go over well. it's important to me that at the start you can look at him and think that if he had just gotten a decent talking to then everything that happens after could have been avoided. bc u know. hurts more when you can look back and go this mightve been avoidable </3

Tim has a Dick obsession, who doesn't! but he has no clue how to approach it normally. Dick is, quite literally, the only omega Tim has hung out with on a regular basis. his parents were betas, bruce is an alpha, and this is pre young justice or a no young justice AU so his social circle is very limited. looking up advice for courting omegas just brings up alpha bro podcasts. (which tim dismisses not bc of the sexism, but bc hes not sure how it would transfer over if he tried it as a beta)

so tim sabotages Dick's medication for his heat and plans his confession for the time he thinks Dick's judgement will be the most impaired by omega hormones. as one does.

Ra's has Also been tracking Dick and his cycles as part of his whole heir thing. Probably because he and Talia got into a fight about her having a baby, or smth along those lines. So hes stealing the detective's omega son to use as a living incubator. as one does.

Ra's kidnaps the both of them, deciding to take Tim for the whole 'omega comfort object' bit i mentioned before.

over the course of the kidnapping it becomes clear that this is an omegaverse sexism kicked up to 11 type of environment. if Tim is a slave then Dick is toy. even narratively i wanna play into it, with perspectives switching from Dick to Tim as Dick loses more and more of his agency. Ra's very much exploits Tim's existing beliefs in order to fully convince him of the A>B>O hierarchy. Even when Ra's punishes Tim he does it in a way that still maintains that Tim is more deserving of basic respect than Dick. (or any other omega, but dick is kind of the main vessel for that)

Also Dick absolutely gets pregnant very early on into the kidnapping, in no small part due to Tim's past interference with his medication. whoops?

And I have way more written out. it gets even worse. it's so fun. it's also crazy long and i am so scared but i Do wanna write it!! just. augh. my doc for this story is already 6 pages total and its almost entirely just notes. anyways. sorry for the wall of text, heres one of the 3 lines i've actually written so far.

"Your alpha never did mate you, by the looks of it. From what Talia's said it seems he hasn't fucked you at all. Poor thing. The detective doesn't know what he's missing." It’s far from the first time someone has insinuated something less than appropriate about Dick and Bruce’s relationship, hell, it’s not even the first time Ra’s has implied it. But hearing it while drugged and tied up in such a violating position is enough to make Dick whimper as he fights against the beginnings of tears in his eyes and a sob in his throat.

S/O Who Doesn’t Think They’re Special

Oikawa never understood your train of thought. Why would anyone like you ever think so little of yourself?

“So you really think you aren’t special? Well, you’re wrong [Y/N]-chan. I can think of a million ways that you are. For example, keeping up with me is already a talent. It’s not every day where I meet someone who doesn’t get tired of me.”

He genuinely feels really bad. Oikawa sees so many things in you-- things you can’t see for yourself-- and he wants to tell you that as much as possible.

From then on, whenever you accomplish a task, he’ll smile and give you a kiss. “See? You aren’t talentless at all.”

He’d probably say some cheesy phrase in an attempt to make you feel better. Kind of like, “you’re the brightest star in my sky” type of stuff. (he says it in a joking manner, but his cheesy phrases hold truth)

[KUROO TETSUROU]

First things first: Kuroo would never date anyone he doesn’t find special. So the fact that he’s with you is proof that you are unique. (wait that sounded weird shdflf;alkj)

When you opened up to him about your insecurities, Kuroo’s reaction was, “huh?? You’re absolutely nuts for thinking you aren’t special. [Y/N], are you serious?”

Absolutely appalled by your feelings. How could someone amazing like you think that you’re a nobody? It hurts him a bit too, seeing his s/o feel so down.

“Y’know, you shouldn’t compare yourself to others like that. I want you to know that you’re you, just like how everyone else is themselves.” (big-brain Kuroo and his wise words wowie)

Kuroo begins to spend more time with you, hoping that maybe one day you’ll be able to see yourself in the same way he does.

[AKAASHI KEIJI]

When you told him about your thoughts and insecurities, Akaashi was bewildered, to say the least. He always viewed you as a perfect s/o, so it took some time to completely understand you.

“Do...do you really think that about yourself? You seriously think you’re talentless and boring? Why? How could I show you that you’re the exact opposite of what you think?” (Bless this man and his kind heart)

Deep down Akaashi realizes that he’ll never be able to completely change your perspective, but that doesn’t make him less determined to prove you wrong.

He’ll listen to everything you need to say. Whenever those thoughts are at its peak, Akaashi will be by your side, holding your hand in reassurance.

Akaashi might turn to his friends for advice on how to make you feel better.

I kinda want to write a pre-canon divergence fic where MBJ takes SQH with him to the demon realm after their first meeting and the poor dude has to survive there (and kinda builds his own demon harem in between) but have no idea how to with Chinese names. Can u give some advice on how to name the characters?👉🏻👈🏻

First thing first: take vigorous advantage of the baby naming sites available on the internet. It’s how I name my characters like 75% of the time. Otherwise, search up Chinese naming conventions and look for articles that explain it! They can be pretty fascinating and helpful.

Another way is to look at Chinese poetry and such — using pretty characters from poetry to name your child is a trend, or so I’ve heard.

For myself, I like to pick two (or three, as it is) Chinese characters (names) that sound good together when spoken out loud, and my second requisite is for them to look good when arranged next to each other — though make sure their meanings make sense!

For example, I have an OC I created recently and named An Hualing. Breaking this down (with my very limited knowledge of Chinese, please keep this in mind), An is a surname meaning peace/tranquility. Hua means illustrious or splendid. The meaning of the name Ling differs depending on gender. Since this character is female, the meaning of the Ling in her name is ‘sound of jade,’ though the name Ling is also unisex and can mean ‘dawn’.

Anyway, I sort of went off a theme for this character. As you might be able to tell from whe meanings behind her name, she’s a very gracious and pretty character with a calm and serene personality. Her Hualing name is a courtesy name crafted after her person — her personal name is in fact different, Ning (meaning quiet/peaceful).

Something I’ve noticed in a lot of naming trends concerning courtesy names in written story (fanfiction or original), is that courtesy names are often made up of two characters, while personal names (given at birth) are one character (or two as well). I like to stick to my observations of this when picking names for my characters — most of my child OCs names will only be two characters (surname and personal name), and my OCs that are old enough to have courtesy names will typically have names of three characters. For example, An Hualing’s personal name is only two characters, An(1) Ning(2), while An(1) Hua(2)Ling(3) is three characters.

When writing a character, I write using their courtesy name if they have it, especially if the POV is from another character’s outside perspective. Unless the POV character is very close with An Ning, they would only use her courtesy name. If the character is a child, and I’m writing from any POV (the kid’s or an outsider POV), I write their names using diminutives (ex: for An Ning, she would be called A-Ning or Ning-er), but only if the character is a small child. If they’re older, like say twelve, then I move on to referring them by their entire name without the diminutive until they get their courtesy name, after which I refer to them by said courtesy name. Unless the person talking to them is their mom or something. You’re always a baby in your mama’s eyes.

Another thing to keep in mind: notice how I didn’t capitalize Ling in An Hualing’s name, despite it being a different character. I’ve seen this in fanfiction sometimes, people writing a character’s name with 3 characters like ‘An HuaLing.’ Make sure that you don’t do this!! It’s like writing John Jackson’s name like John JackSon. Unecessary and sometimes distracting to a reader who knows better.

If worst comes to worse, you can always ask a friend to pick a name and then tweak it until it sounds best to you. I luckily have a few Chinese friends who are happy to help me if I get stuck. OMG HIIIII! i would first learn what you can with educational videos, articles, advice from spirit workers you can find online or contact, and be aware that this is essentially an adoption (unless youre just having them around for company / a learning experience and passing them along to a more suitable keeper later on). if you wanna be a spirits keeper its a huge responsibility, and depending on the spirit they have different wants and needs. u need to be there for them and always treat them kindly. i also recommend to be comfortable with different forms of divination and have tools ready before you even bring a spirit into your home. (speaking as if there werent any in your home already).

there are lots of different types of spirits. 'usual' spirits that are babies, children, teens and adults, 'usual' spirits that have gifts they want to teach you or help you with, angels, demons (not for the novice), djinn (though i do not recommend it.), etc. be educated on each and start to think of what kind of spirit youre comfortable with starting out with. this will be your friend for life (and afterlife!)

ALSO how i got into it.... lol i was clownhunting on ebay and found moon shine who was listed as a haunted metaphysical clown doll. i needed him. i literally couldnt sleep without securing the purchase. best decision of my life he was a HOOT as soon as i brought him over. then as i got better at communication and divination, i learned that i already had a few items in my home that were haunted (-: jessica, george, and bri. then my family grew from there!
