I frickin love Shogun.
I love the cinematography, the filming style, the narrative, the pacing
I love that they let the characters speak their native languages and did not just have them all speak one langauge; adds a lot of authenticity and depth
And I really really love how they're constantly cussing each other out but at the same time there are no consequences of it bc they can't understand each other and are constantly like "????????" whenever the other one is speaking it's hilarious

Malleus is starting to remind me of the Raiden Shogun from Genshin Impact in a way i don’t know how to fully explain. specifically Raiden before the Traveler fights her for the second time in her Plane of Euthymia
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I’m not that familiar with Genshin lore, but I can kind of see it? Both Malleus and Raiden Shogun (if I remember correctly) are hellbent on preserving the “here and now” and are convinced it is for the good of everyone. And like Raiden took away people’s Visions, Malleus is robbing people of something else precious to them: their autonomy.
… No idea what specific battle you’re talking about or about the Plane of Euthymia stuff, but I get the gist of it!

Shōgun has one of the best, most original expressions of love in anything I have ever seen.
As a fan of the show, it is devastating to think this is a one and done, but also, considering what happens, do you really need more? Creators captured perfectly the whole keep them craving more. Even what the finale does, subverting the spectacle, what other show would dare do that? But this has always been a show about words and manners, the slightest transgression is magnified greater than the siege on Helm’s Deep.

Shōgun is one of the greatest television series I’ve ever watched. Full stop. The biggest pain right now is knowing that award season is SO FAR AWAY. I’m already prepping my For Your Considerations.
Leading actor in a limited series: Cosmo Jarvis
Leading actor in a limited series: Hiroyuki Sanada
Leading actress in a limited series: Anna Sawai
Supporting Actor in a limited series: Tadanobu Asano (Yabushige)
Supporting Actress in a limited series: Moeka Hoshi (Fuji)
I also think Takahiro Hira (Ishido) and Fumi Nikaido (Ochiba No Kata) could get a supporting actor nominations.

My dad said some of the promo material he saw made it sound like 'game of thrones in Japan' and while I do hate how people use 'game of thrones' as a shorthand for amoral political intrigue and scheming, allowing for that shorthand, this version really is showing the way all these different people are working on their own agendas, really well, compared to the miniseries.
Seriously, to anyone still following my blog at this point: Watch FX's Shogun, holy shit one episode in (not even done) and I love it fuck this is good.

Played Genshin Impact earlier and finished the Archon Quests for Inazuma, and realized how the climax of the third act reminds me of the climax of Wish.
The whole issue of the ruler of the nation stealing the wishes/ambitions of the people. The ruler is very protective of their nation to point that they’d rather keep the status quo. The main protagonist, who opposes the ruler’s beliefs, was deemed a criminal and starts/joins a rebellion. The closest companion of the ruler helps out the main protagonist to beat the ruler, who we know is the antagonist. During the climactic battle, all the people of the nation, with their wishes and ambitions, stood together as one to aid the main protagonist to finally beat the antagonist. Only that… one antagonist had changed their views regarding the people’s wishes and ambitions, redeemed themselves, and stayed the ruler of that nation, while the other was put in some mirror in a dungeon lmaooo
Also , this is literally the achievement you get during the climax lmao.

I was a ruined mess at the end of this week’s episode of Shōgun titled “Abyss of Life”. This was an absolutely heartbreaking episode, and it was perfect.
I don’t know how to talk about this episode without spoiling things, so let’s get to it: Hiromatsu commits seppuku after publicly disagreeing with and defying Toranaga in the meeting with the other vassals. He had his son Buntaro second him and remove his head.
Sitting there on the couch in front of my TV… I was shaken. Stunned. From Hiromatsu’s guts coming out to his head being removed and rolling right toward Toranaga… This was hard. It hurt. I really liked his character.
Then! The big reveal at the end from Toranaga to Mariko that he and Hiromatsu had, in fact, planned this to truck Ishido and everyone in Osaka that he was really planning on turning himself over for execution. My gods. Just a brutal reveal, but also made me glad that they weren’t mad at each other.
This episode was clearly seeing the stage for the next episode when Toranaga goes to Osaka, and it is turned “Crimson Sky”. I expect fireworks. And death. Lots and lots of death.
I maintain that week after week this is the best show on television. From the writing to the set design to the acting, everyone is operating at a peak level. It’s beautiful to see, and I can’t wait to see how this show is going to end. There are only two episodes left.
