I haven't posted too much about the dolls lately but I ordered a few more Bonnies which happened to arrive on my birthday weekend which was fun. BUT one of them ended up being a duplicate of one I had already (the blue bob) so I decided to play a bit of hair and face roulette with my one Minty Series doll since she happens to have the same neck connection. The only obstacle was her face also has little elf-ish ears that the Bonnie hair doesn't account for, so while the pink pigtails look fine without those ears, the extra blue bob doesn't fully close around the Minty face... which is why that's the one that got hidden under a bit hat lmao. Personally I think the slightly metallic silver hair looks amazing with the flamingo rossi outfit, that might be my favorite result of the shuffle.

I have done nothing of import today except recover from migraine (round 2), go to the post office because the post office often doesn't know how to actually deliver mail where I live, finish my queue at work, and play with dolls.

If I don't get any writing done by Sunday I'm going to eat a shoe.

Edit: I installed a new processor and liquid cooler in my desktop at 6am in the fugue of a migraine and forgot ALL ABOUT IT until I was reminded. In my defense, the migraine was making my vision black out if I looked to the left and I was vaguely concerned my neck was broken, so. (Like I knew it wasn't but the migraine was bad enough that I wondered if I'd been kicked in the neck by someone wearing a steel-toed boot.)

today i'm welcoming home my first BJD, "lieselotte!" i would like to occasionally post more doll content (especially lolita related) on my blog from now on.. so you may be seeing her often!! ♡

lolita collaborations sparked my interest in ball jointed dolls quite a while ago, but i've only recently started researching them and have come to love all of the similarities these hobbies share. i was very lucky to be able to find my discontinued dream doll completely unopened from a secondhand sale despite this specific model being made and distributed almost 15 years ago. it gives the same feeling as a very well preserved time capsule of sorts.

to give more information on her--she is a 2010 limited release model volks super dollfie x baby, the stars shine bright collaboration from the storyline "harajuku memories"

she is absolutely everything i wanted in a doll and a perfect fit for me as a lolita and avid fan of btssb. i prefer the older faceups of her rather than the more modern ones. i intend on matching coords with her-- so far, i own the same gingham rose OP, her default dress, and the honey cross shoes and socks.. though i want to hunt down the same christina hat she wears. i plan to take her outside with me once the weather gets a bit nicer, as her storyline mentions that being her wish!

i'm quite new to the hobby and still have a lot to learn, so feel free to share any resources or tips ^_^

I Collect BJDs, Too. Trump's Second Term Should Alarm You.

We should all know by now that Trump winning the presidency this year is catastrophic for the basic human rights of minorities in the US (and abroad, let's be completely honest here). He is planning to enact a political playbook of draconian laws meant to 'bring back' a fictional ideal of the US, one that sees everyone subservient to conservative cishet white men. This is not fear-mongering, it is simply a cold hard fact that the people backing him financially have a lot to gain from instilling a form of government that solely caters to their whims and desires, and a lot of the Project 2025 playbook not only gives the power to white men in general over that of women, LGBTQIA+, and BIPOC people within our boarders, but will give power to the wealthy white men in this country who want to own everything, including our very bodies.

This should concern you. I don't know how else to express to you that it should concern you. There are not enough words at my disposal to express just how dire this situation is for all of us. And if you aren't concerned, and you're a BJD collector like I am, then allow me to make it personal so you can understand.

These tarrifs will result in much narrower access to BJDs as a whole. I'll use V0lks as an example: V0lks has a store based in the US, in Los Angeles. They send this store batches of dolls and clothes and wigs and eyes and replacement parts periodically to help keep them stocked. When they run out of a thing (unless that thing was being phased out/replaced/discontinued), the employees make a list of what they need, use their own profits to pay for it, and then Volks would send them new stock to fill the gaps. When the tarrifs take hold, this new stock will be more expensive, since Japan in general will be forced to pay higher import tarrifs. That means the US Volks location will have to spend more money on the restock shipments, which will in turn make the dolls more expensive so that Volks can maintain a substantial profit margin; but these tarrifs will backfire, because a 20%-60% increase will not translate to good profit for Volks, which means the US location will be shuttered to keep Volks from hemorrhaging money, which means your only option would be to buy your dolls from Japan... and you'd be paying the extra shipping money, because it will still cost Volks extra money to ship dolls into the US. This may result in Volks choosing not to ship dolls to the US at all, meaning you won't be able to buy any of their dolls again unless you can find a third party willing to spend their own money to send you these dolls at even higher prices that include the profit THEY need to make for doing so.

Lots of doll companies are not as big as V0lks. A lot of them are considerably smaller. The smaller ones will cease operations in the US entirely right off the bat. Some will hold on, but eventually abandon us as a market. A lot of independant BJD artists in the US will not be able to make and sell their dolls because there are no well known (non-scammer) resin workers who will be able to help create a solid product the way that companies like V0lks or R1ngdoll or Lutz or Minifee can offer. Recast companies will also cease operations in the US, because they still need to import the recasts from the counterfeit suppliers in other countries who won't be able to afford the tarrifs point blank period. So if you thought that recasts would be an option, think again (they shouldn't be one anyway, but that's a different convo that we aren't gonna have right now).

These tarrifs, these policies, will affect vast swathes of non-American products, like snacks, drinks, food, entertainment, and toys. One of the big ones that overlaps with the BJD community, anime and manga, will likely vanish, as it will likely be deemed 'too adult' by the religious extremists in power. You will lose access to these things and you will not have another chance to get them for a very very very long time. By the time you do have the chance, some of the BJD companies whose market focus has been the USA might be completely gone. SmartD0ll, for example: their company relies on US consumption of their products, and they market HEAVILY to the US market because we are a really really easy demographic to market to on the global stage. Danny has staked a LOT of his company into our willingness to buy his extremely westernized anime dolls. They are not very popular in Japan, and he focuses very little on other markets where his negative behavior isn't as readily tolerated. Unless he does a massive pivot to a different market... SmartDolls will be gone. I won't speak on how I personally feel about SmartD0ll, but I know that a LOT of people love his product, and will be utterly devastated when they can never buy them again.

So, if you are in this community and voted for him, you should be worried. I know there are people in this community who did, because I've seen the alarming uptick of conservative rhetoric in this community first hand. At the end of the day, you are probably just as disillusioned with the US government and chose to vote accordingly. Even if that meant voting for a felon who has a vetted interest in toppling our current democratic structures and isolating the US economically and cleansing it ethnically and religiously. You will lose access to your dolls. Be ready for that.

Harucasting Smile Maji head: She’s some kind of tan resin, but I don’t 100% remember which one. Her previous owner split the head and body so the coa went with the body. I remember her previous owners name & email, but I don’t recall their instagram handle. Maji has thankfully NOT been recasted so I do not worry about her legitimacy, but I wanted to be upfront about that detail. Her magnets need to be reglued and she still has faceup residue. As with any of my Harucasting dolls, in respect to Haru’s wishes, I will only sell his dolls to pro-artist/anti-recast individuals.

5stardoll Elf Elaine: She was painted by her previous owner and given a mani-pedi which is chipping as well as pretty purple body shimmer. Her face still has faceup residue on it. She’s really cute but I need to make room — I am willing to sell her head separately, though. According to her card of authenticity she was produced in late 2018. I believe she is in normal pink skin.

Latidoll Blue Yern:

Yern is a slim MSD sized doll and the Blue (MSD) line has been long discontinued. Yern still has her coa and Latidoll manual, as well as the emblem in and outside of her head. I am not sure of the specifics but her torso has had some kind of mod job for mobility reasons?

Yern is from early 2009 and has certainly yellowed, but her yellowing appears to be consistent. Yern would probably benefit from a restringing with thicker elastics but I can get her to pose and stand just fine. Her s hooks were replaced and she has traditional/standard bjd s hooks in her wrists and ankles. For whatever reason one elbow likes to stay slightly bent. Yern will be shipped UNSTRUNG so that would be a good opportunity for her elastics to be changed; she still has an o hook for her head.

Her faceup is holding up really well considering it is quite old but please be aware that it is old, has some wear, and it is not factored into the price I am selling Yern at. The biggest sign of wear I noticed as a small dark streak near her temple.

She has some damage near her foot/ankle. Considering her age I think she has been holding up really well.

I purchased this body from the DOA marketplace in 2022. Those who follow me will know how much of an ordeal it was trying to get it delivered lol. In any case, I've decided to go a new direction with that doll idea, and so the body is for sale.

No damage, no mods, no staining, though she does have faint traces of an old body blush on her toes and in her belly button (toes pictured above - it's hard to photograph). She is from approx. 2019. So...

This is a big troublesome problem for me 🥲

If you have followed me on instagram for a while (or maybe even here), you know I'm a big advocat for Youpladolls. I love her dolls, love her sculpts, love the resin colours, love the resin itself. I love their posing and stability and quite frankly, I consider myself her number 1 fan 😅

I own all her MSD and smaller sculpts (except for Vlad, though he is the same sculpt as Vaéron, just with human ears, so... that still counts), and I have a strict "One Doll Per Sculpt" rule, that I usually manage to hold myself up to, to at least SOMEWHAT keep my collection at bay.

Only exception so far are 2 Unoa sculpts that I actually have a double, but these are related, so. Different.

Now. Youpla is the one that always makes me want to break this rule. Starting with Ziya, I've wanted a tan Ziya to begin with. Got a petal one because I missed the last preorder and the instock tan one sold within minutes. Got tempted immediately half a year later when she brought dark tan Ziya to LDoll... (I wouldn't have gotten the petal one had I known she was making this beauty for LDoll...). And ever since then I've been tempted to buy a tan one whenever I saw one for sale.

So now I COULD order one. I COULD order a tan one, or I COULD go for the chocolate colour (which is a new skin tone different to the old chocolate from Lupita's preorder, and close to the Dark Tan...).

I'm KINDA glad the chocolate is not like the old skin colour, because then I'd ALSO be tempted to get a Lupita in chocolate... When she was released I knew I wanted the dark tan, as I had seen it on LDoll in person and knew it was gorgeous. But the lighter chocolate looked so pretty as well, so I almost bought both back then.

But now I'm tempted to get a petal Lupita as well, because... imagine how cute an albino look would be on her?

But in the end, my "One Doll Per Sculpt" rule is still keeping me at bay.

The only thing that is ACTUALLY tempting me (and I mean, really, whispering in my ear to go for it), is getting a chocolate Vàna... I'm pretty sure the sculpt will be discontinued after this preorder, together with Olive and Ophélie (and possibly Ziya as well due to age of the mold?), so this would be the last chance... and why would I get her?? I HAVE a Vàna. In fact, Vàna was my 3rd BJD (after 2 Minifees I bought together) and the first one I actually fell in love at first sight. I love her dearly, but the thing is, she's in mint and therefore not "compatible" with the rest of my crew. She has her own people (Celeste in purple and Vaéron in turquoise) and her own universe. So if I got her in chocolate, she could hang out with the rest of the crew...

And to be completely honest, this thought is seriously haunting me (in the most positive way possible)...

I saw that sculpt going around a couple years ago and I immediately fell in love with it, like from the very second I knew I wanted one to make into a Nero doll 😭 sadly he's currently discontinued, though emailing Obscure_kind (the sculptor) sometimes results them in doing special one off orders! I got mine secondhand, I happened to have a bit of extra money at just the right time someone was selling theirs for a very good price and I just couldn't pass the opportunity haha! He's a tall MSD - around 48cm I believe, and since he's a bit more mature proportioned than most MSDs, clothes can fit him a bit weird - sleeves and pants meant for MSD are just a bit too short, and tops tend to be a bit tight around his chest/shoulder area, but other than that it all fits fine! I get most of his tops in small SD size anyway since I want them oversized lol. And thank you so much on the faceup and eyes! I'm still VERY rusty when it comes to faceups, I do plan on converting two of my older dolls into DV but I'm too intimidated to wipe them and redo their faces since I used to be so good at it and now it's like I'm still re-learning from scratch 😭 but it was my first ever attempt at making eyes and I'm very happy with how they came out! far from perfect but close enough to what I wanted that I'm happy with it unless I decide to try again and have a much better outcome haha.

I am a doll collector with BJD and buying parts or making hybrids can be a pain to color match. Just like playline dolls there’s not much consistency between brands. Some resins age differently, too.

The most reliable color matching source would probably be something like Pantone color cards, but those are FREAKING EXPENSIVE and it’s not reasonable to expect everyone to have them.

BJD collecting is an expensive luxury hobby and there are some of us that do need to keep our spending as minimal as possible.

This skintone chips set (https://www.pantone.com/products/fashion-home-interiors/skintone-guide-limited-edition) has an excellent range of skin tones, but seems to be lacking the pasty pale practically white colors a lot of Asian BJD come in and costs as much as a lower-priced BJD.

This set (https://www.pantone.com/products/plastics/the-pantone-matching-system-plastic-standard-chips-collection) seems ideal for color matching plastics, which resin is, at first but it’s polypropylene chips which will degrade in a few years, and not all colors of urethane or epoxy resins can be replicated in polypropylene. It’s also NINE THOUSAND FREAKING DOLLARS.

We all know I’m always looking for something functional and accessible and $9k that’s going to discolor and maybe even crumble in a decade is not my idea of accessible.

@maleficentmrsofallevil​ suggested a digital resource (https://redketchup.io/color-picker) which is free and accessible to most collectors that have an internet connection and using HEX codes is consistent across devices, however there are a few problems that we might run into.

Everyone’s monitors/phone screens and cameras would have to be calibrated exactly the same, and everyone’s lighting when making comparisons would have to be identical for this to be a viable resource. The hex chart being backlit could also skew the way it looks compared to a tangible resin sample.

That’s frustrating. Free and easy for most people to get a hold of is the ideal.

The main benefit of a physical vs digital resource for color matching is that the color sample and the doll are both subjected to the same lighting conditions, monitor settings, and camera settings so even if those factors vary between users, the comparison will still be relatively accurate.

A bunch of us sat around discussing different options. International hobby paint brands like Vallejo or Mr. Color, international makeup foundation color cards, etc. etc.

I’ve decided to give DMC embroidery floss color cards a try.

There are two versions.

One has samples of the actual floss in the book and costs about $40.

The other has printed color blocks that presumably match the floss colors and costs about $10.

DMC are sticklers for their colors being the same across dye lots. Sometimes they change the numbers on colors and sometimes they discontinue colors all together, so we do still run into the issue of whether everyone’s looking at the same color cards or different versions.

At $10, needing to replace or update the color card every few years isn’t nearly as daunting as a $9k plastic samples set falling apart in your hands once a decade.

(Can you tell I hate polypropylene when used in conjunction with dolls?)

Other variables that will affect the efficacy of using DMC color cards are the conditions under which the color cards are kept like sun exposure, temperature, humidity etc. affecting either the color of the thread samples or the quality of the printed samples.

Another factor is consistency between printed samples.

I have not received these, yet, but my plan is to first compare them to each other to see how well the printed samples match the swatched samples, and then proceed from there.

Sorry I’ve been quiet, I sold at a new con (bought as much dnd & baldur’s gate merch I could find) and started baldurs gate with two of my best friends. I got an ear infection (I think because I choked on a bunch of water), I’m in quarantine because people I met at the con tested positive for Covid 😭. I mask but I am not risking being a spreader so gonna be careful as much as I can!!

I am aiming to make an Astarion out of Logandolls Pan (on layaway) and I just got my Way head from Dannidesignerdolls for my Tav, a Tiefling bard with my name (of course). My friends Tav’s are so cool too. I can’t stop painting them.

Vampire pan is discontinued but maybe one day I’ll find a floating head to swap onto my pan! That being said, non toothy Pan is just the perfect shell for Astarion if you ask me. Logandolls is as pleasant as always to talk to, I can’t wait for his new sculpt release.

My Way is a prototype! Danni is still working and developing Way in her own way, but I’m pumped that current Way looks so much like my tiefling (plus I am a sentimental sap and I’m so hyped to how a head made by my friend).

Also!! My fave lolita BJD stylist remade my favorite JSK that just screams classic punk lolita, a bit h. Naoto. They made me a pair of goth bunny ear clips too for my bday 😭🥹❤️ Dollish sweets is an amazing artist and as a person that wears lolita, the quality is like 1:1. It’s amazing, I’m not a huge fan of dolly lolita style clothing in most BJD clothing shops. These outfits make Marie look like another person trying to get their photo taken by FRUITS. It just feels and looks like real lolita fashion. Should do a fashion show with all the pieces I have from them 😌

When it comes to Barbie I primarily focus on Midge as well as vintage side characters (Skipper, Skooter, Francie, PJ, etc.) and only pick up new releases that tickle my fancy.

I mainly collect Rainbow High, Monster High (G1 & G3), occasionally LOL dolls, and like to keep up with contemporary releases that seem to come and go. I don't collect Bratz as they're too overpriced, but I have a lot of them from my childhood (all restyled by now)

A few overseas brands I love are modern Blythe, Pullip, Mamachapp, Azone, and Licca/Jenny. I have a single 1/4th scale imomo BJD/MJD and I love her dearly.

I love discontinued oddball dolls like Strutz, Catwalk Kitties, Hi Glamm, Pinkie Cooper, Gorgeous Creatures, Novi Stars, etc.

I love vintage 50s-70s dolls and some of my favorite are Crissy, Madame Alexander's Cissy, Chatty Cathy, and more.

I don't consider myself an American Girl collector but I own Molly, Kirsten, and Maryellen.

in better news... a discontinued bjd part i wanted got brought back so i was finally able to order it!!

i ordered this doll in... may? april? whenever the preorder period was idr. im including a fullset photo but mine will be blank

and i also got these posable wing pieces from this other (discontinued) doll bc the site i was ordering from had them in stock

(i think the head wings were also included but im pretty sure theyre magnetic & the doll i ordered doesnt have magnets in his head so idk if ill be able to use them)

and i really really wanted the legs/feet too bc i like them a lot more than the ones my doll comes with and they were apparently sold separately when this doll was released... but no one had them in stock!! they were all sold out. at one point there was a site that had the whole doll in stock & i genuinely considered buying it just for the legs but thankfully it sold before i could make that bad decision lmao

they just rereleased some discontinued stuff!! including those legs!!! so i finally got them!!!!! theyll probably get here later than the doll itself since i ordered that one A While Ago & everything is made to order... but eventually he will have proper bird feet instead of those weird claw... shoe... things lmao. i was so sure i was never going to get my hands on a pair so this was super exciting :)

i know the whole lower torso part wont be interchangeable bc theyre for different body types but im hoping i can just swap each leg out at the hip or possibly even at the knee, but idk how well theyll fit together... i might have to modify them a bit or possibly swap just the feet & not the legs at all. either way its still an improvement imo. i havent figured out exactly how i want to customize him yet (i do like the colors on the official one so i might do something similar...) but its nice to know i wont have to figure out how to make those weird feet work lmao

Don't follow me if you support recasts or own a recast, I can spot them from a mile away. Please support the original artist of the doll, there's no excuse to owning a recast.

Even if it's a discontinued doll, buying a recast of said doll can hurt the secondhand market and make it harder for new BJD collectors to buy secondhand.

Referring to BJDs as 'investments' gives me the ick, because unless your doll is a highly sought after, discontinued, potentially rare sculpt, it's monetary value won't increase. I honestly can't separate the term 'investment' from the thought of people who buy things solely to fix them up and sell them for a higher cost. Last I checked, we called those people 'scalpers'.
