How did Dream stage it? We talk about five ways, including the invitation to Tommy, the location, the fake disc, Punz and the Revive Book.

Ok, so can we talk about Punz for a second? Because like when I rewatched that stream the other day, not only did I notice that it was Punz who avenged Dream by killing Tommy and returning all of his stuff, after Sapnap and Tommy had ambushed Dream and refused to return it [details] (making him truly the mvp, who really doesn’t get enough credit). But I also noticed some other fun things.

Tommy punches Dream -> immediately killed by Punz [clip].

Like okay maybe we could make the point that Dream pays him to kill Tommy and reclaim all of his stuff [clip], but pretty sure Dream isn’t paying him to be so protective.

To be fair, just because c!Wilbur took the discs off the field, making c!Dream think they were burned doesn’t necessarily mean the disc war ended. It was about leverage for self defense and to stop c!Tommy from hurting others. So then, if the disc wars started because c!Tommy killed c!Dream repeatedly [see this post for details], then c!Tommy coming to kill c!Dream in prison in the finale is still a continuation of that war. Quite good parallelism actually, didn’t it all start with an ambush after all.

So, in that sense, what literally ended the disc war was c!Tommy growing to understand c!Dream in the finale. Really, what ended the disc war was the divine power that made c!Tommy’s limbo c!Dream’s pov.

Course, none of that could have happened if c!Wilbur was still there to influence c!Tommy. He needed to leave for them to have the chance to see eye to eye. But I don’t think the end of the discs truly ended the disc wars, as much as the Trojan War isn’t about Helen. Sure it’s how it began its even what it was about, but when you think of the Trojan war your first thought isn’t Helen, your second thought probably isn’t Helen, even though she was the reason. And I feel like the disc war is much the same, they were over the discs, but they were also about so much more than that, a fundamental conflict between c!Tommy and c!Dream.

what does it take to end the disc war and the answer is c!wilbur putting the damn things on a shelf and telling dream and tommy no . lol

Interview with Melissa Auf der Mauer:

I grew up in Montreal, Canada, in Quebec. My parents were independent, freewheeling, freelancers for their whole lives. Both started as journalists. They both founded two different independent presses - my mother a French one, my father an English one - and they were both radical politically. My parents never worked for one corporation in their entire lives.

My mother was a first wave feminist and decided to do everything she had never seen a woman do. My father was the child of very, very poor immigrants and really built an incredible world for himself. My mother ended up in the grand world of Quebec theater via Cbc and her own radio shows and broadcasting - she went from journalism into Quebec theater and became the leading literary translator. Her passion is bringing the voice of French Canadian theater to the world. I spent my 2nd birthday in Africa because she said being a mother wasn't going to stop her from climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, so that was the kind of woman I was raised by. She was also the first female rock disc jockey on the Montreal airwaves.

My father took his journalism into radio, then into a remarkable television show that he had from 69' through 72' which was really early wave man-on-the-street camera on film interviewing everyone. He captured a remarkable oral history of people in Montreal during a time when a huge political upheaval was happening. There was a language war between the French and the English, and both my parents fought for the underdog - the French. My father ended up becoming a politician and running downtown Montreal for years and has a street named after him. He had the biggest funeral in Montreal history. My father was larger than life in many regards. He was married to the city of Montreal. My parents weren't together for any of my life, but my father was a man of the people. My mother married my stepfather when I was ten.

I liked depressing new wave British music as a kid and wore military khaki outfits. I didn't care what I wore. None of my women role models dressed up. I dated a couple mods, we wore very straight clothes, no curves, but I was also a late bloomer. So I just really embraced that people thought I was a boy for a few years. I still have small breasts, so I've never been focused on that. Before I joined Hole at 23 I had never worn lipstick.

There was some religion in my parents' upbringing that turned them off, so they were atheist, political, intellectual, unbelievably well-read literary people. So in many ways I rebelled against that. I'm still not a big reader, but I do enjoy the structure of schooling. I was more into sound and visual. I was planning on getting my masters in photography. I enjoy school, but I'm more into mystical emotional analysis than a bunch of intellectual destroying-of-ideas stuff. In high school I had my own darkroom, and my first instrument was trumpet. Our yearbook was basically like a punk rock fanzine, and I took all the pictures, and did all the collages. I don't go into anything with any expectations or plans, and I'm not a person that strives for security. I moved out of home when I was sixteen, I've been very independent my whole life. I've never had aspirations, I just enjoy being in the moment, which is why I love music, but why I was so hesitant to join Hole. I hate the word 'rock star.' I never aspired to that. My heroes were Glenn Danzig - he was a really weird nerdy comic book guy, not your typical 'rockstar,' you know - Morrissey, Robert Smith. These people weren't your larger than life rockstar, they were just odd people. I never romanticized success, just making art and finding my people, finding my voice.

Some of this could be because I grew up in the public eye in Montreal. I was the only daughter of a very special, but slightly controversial figure. My father was a bachelor, a man about town - they call him a bon vivant - he died very young from too much smoking, too much drinking. He was like a 1950s fedora wearing silent film star. I grew up in his shadow, a very well-known girl, which I believe made me more shy, as it was hard for me to speak in public. My mother didn't like me growing up in the public eye and would accuse my father of exploiting me to make him look good. So I harbored a pretty complex idea of what outside adoration looked like. He was a very difficult and tortured person. His family were all really intense and religious people. Very spirited, but not normal at all, so his relationship with them was very fraught. My father was one of those people who needed to be adored, to have a big life on the outside, but didn't have an intimate life... I was sort of the only person who he had a responsibility to have an intimate relationship with. I was the only one who had a private life with my father, this figure who had such an immense public life, and that defined a big part of me. It's also connected to why I was such a good fit for Courtney, and later Billy [Corgan]. Because in many ways, Courtney and Billy were like these weird second-versions of my parents. I was often unknowingly used as a pawn between them. There was always so much drama with Billy and Courtney. Courtney is more like my father. He was really radical and outspoken, so he understood her.

I had a drive to find my own voice. But I compromised a lot of my own beliefs to be in a band on a major label, because I hate corporations. And my whole journey continued to be in conflict with that, as well as the part of me that just wanted to be a photographer and be in a darkroom, and not have to deal with all these people who have a bigger relationship to the outside world than they do their inner world.

I became a dj at seventeen at this dive bar and I worked as the ticket girl at a club, which is where I saw Billy Corgan for the first time. I started my first band Tinker and I played bass. Smashing Pumpkins were my favorite band because of their sonics, the oceans of sound and layers of guitars and rolling drums and bass.

When Kristen Pfaff died, Hole was on a search for a new bass player. I was in the middle of preparing for my masters at college when Billy Corgan called me and told me he wanted me to join Courtney's band Hole. I refused, but then Courtney started leaving messages on my phone and was persistent. She convinced me to come see her band, and I realized they had a hole (no pun intended) that they really needed filled.

And because I'm less of an academic and never really articulated feminism, at the time, I didn't realize the power of her lyrics. I've never been a singer/songwriter fan, you know, like Courtney loves Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen...I love Black Sabbath and Caius...I just like witchy stuff. I like ghosts and magic. And so with Courtney, it was all very academic in a way to me. So the joke is, I probably missed a lot of the point during my time in Hole.

There are some bands that recognize that drummers and bass players nurture and create songs and are paid adequately, and then some people, quite literally and medievally, break it down to chords and lyrics. I don't think Patty or I were handled fairly in regards. Courtney's process of writing a song stems from six hours of jamming on one riff, one lyrical thing, and then carving it together. We were at every session and did everything together. But Patty and I got slivers [financially]. Eric and Courtney, who are the founders of the band [although Courtney claims she's the only founder] were more the business people. Although I'm proud of my bass playing, it was definitely my singing that brought the most to Hole. I worked harder on my backup vocals than anything. Because of my choir teacher, I had an ear for harmonies. On Celebrity Skin, for every Courtney track, there is me doubling her one to three times...and there are two to four to five part harmonies with me behind every chorus. So I had more of my voice on that record than I do on even my own solo records. They wanted a lush sound, and I was the angel to the wild screamer, so we just coated everything with my voice.

The first few weeks I was just paid $600 a week. It was a weird polished corporate record, but there were also no other female voices on mainstream rock radio besides Gwen Stefani and Alanis Morrissette. So I thought, maybe there was a point to this insanely overproduced record. But then Courtney's red carpet movie career was happening, which meant there were a lot of delays in making Celebrity Skin. Then I worried she wasn't going to be concerned about making this record if she decided to make another movie. And I had already signed a five year contract with Hole. I didn't want to be in a band that didn't work, just waiting around. We were supposed to do all these tours and Courtney just wasn't committing. So after the five years were up, I was out. At that exact time, D'arcy had left the Pumpkins, and Billy wanted me to be the bassist for Smashing Pumpkins for a year. In that one year I made more money than the five years I spent in Hole. I had photographed during Hole - I took a roll a day - so I have 30,000 photographic negatives of those years.

For Smashing Pumpkins, every setlist was different. So imagine three to five hours of music, different key changes, different versions of the songs we already knew. I had five basses tuned in all these crazy ways.

Right after I left Hole, I sent a letter to Courtney, I don't remember what she said in the letter she sent back...it was five pages. She wasn't happy about me leaving. The letter has long since disappeared or faded, but the only thing I remember was a line warning me of turning into a Nicole Kidman ice queen and warning me of becoming Billy Corgan's purse [whatever that means].

I dedicated my first solo record to my Welsh choir teacher because he believed in me when I was still so shy. My second album was a concept album about this woman who travels through time and follows the blood of a Viking's heart into bleeding trees then comes out of the other side of a car crash. I love witchy stuff - which is why I like men who make heavy metal. They don't know it, but they're tapping into their woman side. I think that's the power of bands like Black Sabbath. The real world isn't beautiful - its fantastic in its humanity but the brutality of humans coexisting is pretty profound. For me it always works best going into the realm of witches and goblins and time travel.

The first time I ever had unprotected sex was in my 30s and I got pregnant the first time. So now I'm a mother. I had a home birth because I'm afraid of needles. It only took an hour. And while I was giving birth, my daughter literally reached her hand out of my vagina to shake my husband's hand.

Salvador/Platoon

1986 was the year of Oliver Stone, when the writer-director blasted out of somewhat murky obscurity with the double play of “Salvador,” his Central American civil war drama released to sputtering results in April, and “Platoon,” filmed immediately after “Salvador” and released at Christmas. It’s appropriate that both pics are being simultaneously brought out by MGM in “special edition” DVD packages (a “Platoon” DVD sans bells and whistles was released in August), since Stone credits the momentum of “Platoon,” which won four Oscars including best picture, for helping the nearly forgotten “Salvador” gain two noms, including a richly deserved acting nod for James Woods as amoral, hustling photojournalist Richard Boyle.

Boyle’s collaboration on the project proved to be far greater than a mere co-writer credit, as revealed in both Stone’s commentary and Charles Kiselyak’s accompanying hourlong docu, “Into the Valley of Death,” about the film’s hazardous making.

Stone met both Boyle and Ron Kovic — Stone adapted latter’s life into “Born on the Fourth of July” — at the Sidewalk Cafe in Venice, Calif., in the late ’70s, and heard Boyle’s colorful accounts of his time in El Salvador. To Boyle’s surprise, Stone quickly wanted to adapt the stories for a movie, incorporating recent Salvadoran developments, and asked Boyle — who had never touched a script — to stay with him and co-write it. Stone even considered having Boyle play himself, when production cash was scarce.

Apparently, for all of Stone’s reputation as a wild man, he was a relative piker compared to Boyle, whom Woods openly admits he was scared of during production. In the docu, there’s a clear tension between helmer and star; even though the pair subsequently worked together on “Nixon” and “Any Given Sunday,” they waged some terrific fights on the set.

Stone characterizes Woods as “instinctively bourgeois” and forever concerned about his safety, while Boyle was the complete opposite; Stone’s low-budget guerrilla filmmaking approach in some remote Mexican shooting locales also rubbed up against Woods’ fear of danger, triggering the thesp to walk off the set during a battle scene and board a bus to the U.S.

The many conflicts, which also involved Jim Belushi playing opposite Woods’ gonzo Boyle as sleazeball Bay Area disc jockey Dr. Rock, played into what Stone refers to in Kiselyak’s making-of docu accompanying “Platoon” as “method direction.” The helmer “kept us on edge,” Belushi notes, even as he had to fend off the concerns of co-producer Gerald Green about the production’s Byzantine money problems and the concomitant strikes waged by the largely Mexican crew when the producers weren’t able to come up with the week’s wages.

On the fascinating if sometimes rambling commentary, Stone reveals that the entire production, in fact, was based on a variety of “scams,” including exploiting Dutch tax-shelter laws and — when pic was initially set to film in El Salvador itself until the technical advisor was assassinated — deceiving both rebels and government troops with phony scripts depicting either side as heroic.

Ever reflective, Stone acknowledges the ironic chasm between pic’s agit-prop, anti-interventionist idealism and the results-at-any-cost ethic of the filmmaking process. While former U.S. Ambassador to El Salvador Robert White relates in the docu vivid first-hand accounts and analysis of the decaying political situation under Reagan administration sponsorship of the country’s corrupt military regime, Stone is more willing to exaggerate, commenting, “We were making a Western,” and that part of him wants to be “the Messenger, and part of me wants to have fun.” As he has displayed so often in his work, Stone has a showman’s desire to weave threads of fact with those of fiction. In the case of “Salvador,” where the Boyle character seems to be in all places at once, it’s a case of journalism running head-on into fantasy.

While the “Salvador” package includes several extras, including 25 minutes of footage deleted to gain an R rating (including an outrageous but key orgy scene that by all rights should have been re-inserted into pic on this new edition), the “Platoon” DVD is fairly modest, featuring running commentaries by Stone and military adviser Capt. Dale Dye along with Kiselyak’s informative 45-minute “A Tour of the Inferno” docu. From the sound of it, whatever horrors Woods faced in Mexico were nothing next to the extremes of prep training Stone and Dye put their cast through before filming.

If it makes you feel better Im a huge c!tommy apologist but I still see the killing c!tubbos bees and burning down his house as canon like c!tommy is an asshole, I can admit that. Its always confused me how people refuse to see early events as un-canon especially when they impact the story or when they cherry pick like people will see c!dream in c!tommys walls as canon but won't see how c!tommy acted in that time as canon like a lot of people forgot c!tommy built sewers through c!georges and c!dreams home which further turned the greater smp against l'manberg.

I don't understand, how can we be going around talking about disc duo, writing hundreds of words of fanfiction and analysis on them and not even recount something like the actual disc saga properly...

Like it literally takes place during a scuffle shortly after they tried to blow him up in the nether. And I don't know about you, but people plotting to kill me seems like a fairly reasonable time to spy on them...

A rule of thumb when I analyze early server conflicts is that you have to metagame. Such as Dream coming into a server conflict as a moderator and not a player

hmmm i think i agree with this to an extent--my stance more tends to be along the lines of "a lot of irl dynamics + fandom dynamics fed into the lore at the time and retrofitting earlier lore to fit later character dynamics tends to miss nuances of the characters as they developed over the time," if that makes any sense.

because while lmanburg was the introduction of THEEE roleplay, there was still roleplay pre-lmanburg, yk? and there are points when the rp got thrown off because of certain things like dream having to uphold server rules which i do count as moments where cc!dream's status as you know, the moderator of the server has to be acknowledged to some degree--the examples that come to mind being tubbo's villagers and schlatt being banned. but for moments like the disc war? that was less "cc!dream breaking the rp to act as mod of the server" and more "cc!dream participating in the rp on the server" and keeping that distinction in mind matters, imo.

(that doesn't mean that moments such as dream banning schlatt or dream killing tubbo's villagers are non-canon, in any sense, but they were absolutely moments of dream the guy breaking the rp of the server at the time in order to enforce server rules.)

and of course in the rp itself, c!Dream isn't the moderator or admin, but he is canonically the server owner and was considered so for a long time, which comes with itself its own can of worms. but yeah, it's important to consider lore...chronologically, if that makes sense, in my opinion? the future can inform our understanding of earlier lore, but sometimes i think people are a little too willing to take c!dream from later on in the server and paste him over the guy that was there earlier on, or taking any moment from earlier lore of c!dream acting in a way that they consider "ooc" for later c!dream and claiming that said moments arent canon, and the works. it's been established by the finale that everything is canon, from the very first moment of the server that was invoked in the finale. so while it can make analysis harder, i think it's important to consider earlier lore for well, all the characters yeah but imo especially c!dream (bc of how often he is misunderstood and the lack of a personal POV later on) when it comes to talking about who he was before and how he ends up becoming the man that he is in the finale.

I am not sure how (apparent Hamas supporter "vague-humanoid") was trying to prove intellectual honesty and willingness to challenge his worldview by blocking me when I gave him the evidence he explicitly asked for LOL. But sadly, that seems to be par for the course for people who support rapists and murderers (Hamas). They cannot bear to be challenged. Their grandstanding moral fury, their sweeping (and blatantly historically inaccurate) statements -- all collapse when confronted with the truth, however kindly presented. Their only alternative? Shutting discourse down entirely, plugging their eyes and ears, and going "LA LA LA I'M NOT LISTENING!" I would just like to say that Benchtrio has a LOT of untapped villain potential

We always always see them as the protagonists, so that typically makes them the hero. We know they're definitely a bit morally grey and very chaotic, but they always end up as the heroes when frankly, I think it's more likely that they'd actually become villains.

Ranboo-- Obviously the whole "no sides, only people" thing easily makes him very likely to turn "bad". There's so much more greyness with him than anyone else, especially in the SMP everything is way more complicated than just picking sides. Even if he knew he was more of the villain than a hero, I don't think he'd acknowledge it, he’s just protecting what he cares about.

However, I think he's the least likely to become a villain on his own. He's a good guy at heart, SMP and everywhere else, he's just willing to ignore it for the sake of the people he cares about. If he was gonna be a villain there would have to be some else as the reason he's doing it, whether they're involved as well or forcing his hand somehow.

Once he does it though, he will put his all into it. Whatever side, whatever reason, he follows through all the way and doesn't take any shortcuts. He's surprisingly ruthless and creative that's what makes him a good villain.

Tubbo-- Tubbo is perhaps less likely to turn villain than Ranboo, but he absolutely would given the right motivation. He's overall more mature than the other two and has more awareness of moral "right" and "wrong", which is why he doesn’t do whatever he wants on a whim, just what he can probably get away with. He’s a villain in a hero’s mind or a hero with villainous tendencies. Vigilantism I think is the best/most natural path for him OR he break out of societal expectations of goodness completely and gives no shits. When he turns villain, he knows exactly what he's doing to people.

The maturity and moral compass is what makes him the well established mom friend (because the rest will just wreak havoc on the world and themselves otherwise. Someone has to be the responsible one) and that's what would be used to push him over the edge. Similar to Ranboo, Tubbo would need someone else to either be in danger somehow or also doing the villain thing to make him switch sides. Once he does though, he finds that he likes it a lot more than he ever liked being good. And he's great at it. He has plans and contingencies and even nukes to fall back on if he must, but he knows he doesn't have to reveal his whole hand yet.

I also think that brain damage from explosions/experimenting could be a good turning point for him. Either pretty much right away, or slowly, (possibly trying to fix his body/mind) doing worse things until he realizes he's turned into the bad guy and doesn't want to stop. (Can you tell I love prosthetic/scarred/explosion damage Tubbo?)

Tommy-- Tommy is BY FAR the most likely to turn into a villain and it's frankly astounding he's always the hero, but like I said, Protagonist things. He would be a fun character to use for one of those stories where throughout the book we slowly realize the protag is actually also the villain. Anyway, it's ironically what makes him an entertaining protagonist that makes him the best and entertaining villain. He's bold and sunshiney and extremely chaotic no matter what he's doing, but most of all, he's ambitious. I don't watch a lot of Tommy streams and I admittedly wasn't as engaged with his lore (Im a Techno main) but when he wants something, he'll do anything to get it (primary example being the disc war and all related).

Tommy doesn't think before he acts. Even when he does, he doesn't think and in most cases doesn't care about how it will affect other people. When he wants it badly enough, that even applies to his friends, as we see sometimes in the SMP. He won't acknowledge that he's the villain, especially if his friends are doing it too, but he's the most likely to royally fuck things up for everyone else. TUMOASD Tommy is the best example of this--he runs around, shooting people and very easily crossing the line between good and bad whenever he feels like. He's incredibly likable, yes, but it doesn't matter to him whether he's a "good guy" or a "bad guy" and he'll always think he's in the right. Furthermore, Tommy isn't as mature as the other two and is willing to go to much more extreme lengths over more trivial things. I think it should also be noted that Tommy is spontaneous (tho we know that), gets incredibly jealous, almost to the point of possessiveness and more physical than other characters/people—as someone mentioned, he uses /hug when others do not and stuff like that, but that physical nature could go either way. Oh also Tommy does so much evil laughing and he sounds like a deranged fucking jackal, so when he’s standing over you with bloody fists or a baseball bat (I specifically think he would prefer blunt objects or small knives) he’s absolutely terrifying.

They would all be very different types of villains and when put together, very dangerous. The best part is that I think they would still work well together because they cover all the bases—planning and strategy and follow through, ruthlessness and actually getting your hands dirty and the willingness to hurt people.

What will almost inevitably happen, is that Tommy goes villain, and that's the trigger for the other two to follow. Or, it would be fun to see them meet and team up after already becoming villains. However, any way that it’s done, I just think we need more villain benchtrio.

religious trauma and star wars discourse: an inside perspective

I see a lot of posts like “You can’t blame the Jedi for Anakin’s downfall! They did everything they could for him and he chose to be fucking stupid!”

And sure, yeah, I see your point. But not everyone has read the novelizations and not everyone will (myself included) for one reason or another, and their opinions are based solely on the text and subtext provided by the films. 

So consider this perspective from someone who was raised in a strict Evangelical household and is still working through a lot of religious trauma: Anakin Falls because he feels trapped by the Order and their expectations, which is a nuanced and complicated issue depending on which textual source we decide to pull from. 

Anakin Skywalker was a little boy who’d been freed from slavery by a Jedi Knight, a group of warriors and protectors that he looked up to. That same Knight was then threatened with eviction from the Order for helping rescue, just so we don’t forget, a literal child slave. Of course Anakin’s going to feel indebted to Qui-Gon and to the Order for letting them both stay (and then additionally for letting Obi-Wan train him after Qui-Gon’s death). 

He sees everything transactionally. That’s how he was raised. No matter how much meditation you do, some of the Council were right: He was too old to let that shit go. And there wasn’t enough time in his teenage years to process it properly before the Clone Wars began.

He has to step up to the plate and become the Hero With No Fear. He’s the Chosen One, the son of the Force. His body isn’t entirely his anymore, because it’s been commodified and claimed by the Jedi Order (whether or not they realize or acknowledge it). 

So, as someone who was raised to identify hardcore with the ideology that sex = gender (which I no longer subscribe to at all), I was treated very differently from my brothers as a kid. I was always in the kitchen, always watching the babies, always cleaning the dishes etc. 

But high value was placed on my usefulness as a “nurturer”, so I felt validated. This was good work. I was doing something helpful. I was being good in the way the people surrounding me expected. Until I got old enough to understand how exploitative and shitty Evangelicalism is and got the fuck away. 

Can you see how I might relate to Anakin, then? How it might be hard to have incredible pressure placed on you to serve serve serve all the time, even though you were supposed to be free from that? No time to breathe, rules that dictate private areas of one’s life... Kinda like his childhood but just a little bit different.

Of course he’s going to want to rebel, but that guilt and that debt is so deep under his skin that he can’t shake it. Can’t let it go. If he’d been able to sit down and process the issues he faced as a child, without fighting a war as a slightly larger child, then maybe... I don’t know. Maybe he wouldn’t have Fallen. 

Maybe he simply would have said his thanks, said his goodbyes, and left to raise his children with his wife. 

But I was lucky enough to escape to college and outgrow the idea that my body would always be some kind of bargaining chip. I let go of the ideology I’d been raised with because there was space enough to work through my childhood bullshit. Anakin doesn’t have that luxury in canon. He’s got shit to do.

And as someone who still has issues eating dinner before my boyfriend after almost 6 years of therapy and a ton of self-discovery, that guilt-and-debt feeling I mentioned can hit hard. And it’s tough to get rid of. I’m still working on that at age 26. 

So yeah, I don’t particularly care for the Jedi Order. 

I don’t care that other people do like them, of course. I know it’s all just fiction and these are a bunch of made up dudes in costumes running around a set. It’s just been tough to read a lot of these posts that are so pro-Jedi from a context that I do not have or wish to have (the novels) and feel excluded or invalidated.
