fuck it since my birthday is in like one day i'm gonna use my birthday wish to tell y'all to look at the shit going on in southern Appalachia right now after Hurricane Helene. look at it and talk about it and spread resources about it like wildfire because nobody else fucking is and it feels like we're on our own out here.
there are people who are stranded in hazardous areas that are still safer than trying to leave by driving on the increasingly hazardous roads. i'm personally going into my third day without electricity at this point, and haven't been able to get any gas for a generator to even keep our fridge working. there are very few places with power or running water, and cell service has just barely been restored in the last hour. ground crews are working hard to repair things, but there are many, many areas that are entirely inaccessible that may not receive these fixes for several more days if not weeks. i'm afraid my own neighborhood might become one of those areas if repairs don't get to us soon, and since we're much more rural i have a difficult time trying to be optimistic about it.
we're very far inland. i guarantee you damn near everybody here was expecting a little more rain and wind like we usually get during hurricane season, if they even heard about the hurricane beforehand in the first place since most people only got about a twelve hour notice before landfall- after several major areas had already been flooded. our terrain protects us from most major weather events- most locals have never encountered a single tornado or legitimate tornado warning in our entire lives. nobody i've talked to or heard from about it seems to have had any idea that it would be this bad. everybody's wishing that they took it more seriously, but we've never, ever had to before. i've seen people comparing it to Hurricane Katrina and honestly i'm not sure if that's all too inaccurate. today while looking for a single working gas station i drove by a military helicopter parked in front of the elementary school i went to when i was little.
please for the love of god, talk about us. talk about the good memories you had here or the beauty of our mountains, and talk about how devastated we are as we watch historic structures, buildings, and entire towns get wiped from the face of the earth like they were never even there. stop dismissing us as uneducated hicks and rednecks and hilllbillies and fucking help us.

Its honestly terrible how many towns I can name off of the top of my head that have been washed away by Helene. From what I've heard (please take it with a grain of salt almost all information I'm getting is by word of mouth) Boone North Carolina is gone, Chimney Rock is gone, Blowing Rock, a lot of Banner Elk, from Asheville down most places are destroyed and heavily damaged. There's no words. These places Ive gone to and visited since I was a kid are just all gone. Chimney Rock is becoming a poster child for the damage this storm did but I haven't heard anyone talking about the death toll there. There's no way only 112 people have died in total from this storm. People are still missing everywhere and it's nearly impossible to escape in some places.

Yahweh Calls Israel to Return to Him
1 If thou wilt return, O Israel, Saith the LORD, Yea, return unto Me; And if thou wilt put away thy detestable things out of My sight, And wilt not waver; 2 And wilt swear: ‘As the LORD liveth’ In truth, in justice, and in righteousness; Then shall the nations bless themselves by Him, And in Him shall they glory.
3 For thus saith the LORD to the men of Judah and to Jerusalem: Break up for you a fallow ground, And sow not among thorns. 4 Circumcise yourselves to the LORD, And take away the foreskins of your heart, Ye men of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem; Lest My fury go forth like fire, And burn that none can quench it, Because of the evil of your doings.
5 Declare ye in Judah, and publish in Jerusalem, And say: ‘Blow ye the horn in the land’; Cry aloud and say: ‘Assemble yourselves, and let us go into the fortified cities.’ 6 Set up a standard toward Zion; Put yourselves under covert, stay not; For I will bring evil from the north, And a great destruction. 7 A lion is gone up from his thicket, And a destroyer of nations Is set out, gone forth from his place; To make thy land desolate, That thy cities be laid waste, without inhabitant. 8 For this gird you with sackcloth, Lament and wail; For the fierce anger of the LORD Is not turned back from us. 9 And it shall come to pass at that day, Saith the LORD, That the heart of the king shall fail, And the heart of the princes; And the priests shall be astonished, And the prophets shall wonder.
10 Then said I: ‘Ah, Lord GOD! surely Thou hast greatly deceived this people and Jerusalem, saying: Ye shall have peace; whereas the sword reacheth unto the soul.’ 11 At that time shall it be said of this people and of Jerusalem; A hot wind of the high hills in the wilderness Toward the daughter of My people, Not to fan, nor to cleanse; 12 A wind too strong for this shall come for Me; Now will I also utter judgments against them. 13 Behold, he cometh up as clouds, And his chariots are as the whirlwind; His horses are swifter than eagles.— ‘Woe unto us! for we are undone.’— 14 O Jerusalem, wash thy heart from wickedness, That thou mayest be saved. How long shall thy baleful thoughts Lodge within thee? 15 For hark! one declareth from Dan, And announceth calamity from the hills of Ephraim: 16 ‘Make ye mention to the nations: Behold—publish concerning Jerusalem— Watchers come from a far country, And give out their voice against the cities of Judah.’ 17 As keepers of a field Are they against her round about; Because she hath been rebellious against Me,
Saith the LORD.
18 Thy way and thy doings have procured These things unto thee; This is thy wickedness; yea, it is bitter, Yea, it reacheth unto thy heart.
19 My bowels, my bowels! I writhe in pain! The chambers of my heart! My heart moaneth within me! I cannot hold my peace! Because thou hast heard, O my soul, the sound of the horn, The alarm of war. 20 Destruction followeth upon destruction, For the whole land is spoiled; Suddenly are my tents spoiled, My curtains in a moment. 21 How long shall I see the standard, Shall I hear the sound of the horn?
22 For My people is foolish, They know Me not; They are sottish children, And they have no understanding; They are wise to do evil, But to do good they have no knowledge.
23 I beheld the earth, And, lo, it was waste and void; And the heavens, and they had no light. 24 I beheld the mountains, and, lo, they trembled, And all the hills moved to and fro. 25 I beheld, and, lo, there was no man, And all the birds of the heavens were fled. 26 I beheld, and, lo, the fruitful field was a wilderness, And all the cities thereof were broken down At the presence of the LORD, And before His fierce anger.
27 For thus saith the LORD: The whole land shall be desolate; Yet will I not make a full end. 28 For this shall the earth mourn, And the heavens above be black; Because I have spoken it, I have purposed it, And I have not repented, neither will I turn back from it. 29 For the noise of the horsemen and bowmen The whole city fleeth; They go into the thickets, And climb up upon the rocks; Every city is forsaken, And not a man dwelleth therein. 30 And thou, that art spoiled, what doest thou, That thou clothest thyself with scarlet, That thou deckest thee with ornaments of gold, That thou enlargest thine eyes with paint? In vain dost thou make thyself fair; Thy lovers despise thee, they seek thy life. 31 For I have heard a voice as of a woman in travail, The anguish as of her that bringeth forth her first child, The voice of the daughter of Zion, that gaspeth for breath, That spreadeth her hands: ‘Woe is me, now! for my soul fainteth Before the murderers.’ — Jeremiah 4 | JPS Tanakh 1917 (JPST) The Holy Scriptures according to the Masoretic text; Jewish Publication Society 1917. today has instilled a new zest for life in me. oh god things could be so so much worse!
#was hanging out w friends yesterday and my one friend got pulled over going through a toll booth near my house#turns out his registration was expired and he didnt know and they towed him car#he had the cops take him to my house bc the dmv doesnt take walk ins. stayed over. we took him to the dmv in the morning#2 hours in there to fix the registration + another 2 to get his parents to transfer him money for it#go to the towing place and they cant release his car bc theyre a private company that works for the state#(he was pulled over on the parkway so it was a state trooper)#and they need a release form from the state police who are located at an unmarked building off the side of the parkway#like its not on the map#we go. finally get an officer to come out. officer comes out. says he cant give him the form bc his license is suspended#because he got a ticket 1 year ago and had a court date but he had just moved and the courts had his old address#so he never received his summons and the court just assumed he was ditching them#PLUS. once the state trooper found the actual ticket my friend remembered that he had gotten pulled over bc his phone#was in his hand but he was using it as a GPS bc he was new to the area. and the cop wrote up a ticket but never gave him one#so he didnt even know he had been written up#so now his car is stuck in south jersey. he has to take the train up to north jersey. beg the brooklyn courts to let him appear online#and then somehow get back down here and get the paperwork to get his car. meanwhile its also $250 every day the tow people have the car#i just cant believe how this didnt all happen at once. how it was quite literally one thing after the next in a straight line of disaster

i really should just mute the word 'twitter' on here because i don't wanna seem like i want to defend that goddamn website lmao but a lot of the things people on here say abt it fall into the same "usamerican citizen going 'haha someone actually uses whatsapp like a weirdo just text'" category of clueless because it misses the fact people from all over the world use it in many different ways

Travis Hackett. Impart some of your dogged determination upon me so I might soldier on and survive another undoubtedly arduous and grueling day. Remind me I'm still at the top, and no matter the weight and strain, I will not give in, nor let go.
My righteous path long tainted, yet the effort still sacred. Every cinderblock of this pavement, I carved from my broken bones, colored with these blue veins, my sincerest goodwill in form, the road I walk on my way to hell.
I'll hold on, as you held on. Even if I see the black sun opening up ahead. Even when the burning suffocates my thought.
My duty keeps me standing. My love spills blood. Two worlds pulling from each side, I heard the king shout, 'split in half!' No way in hell. If you could do it, I can do it. Immobile. Keeping the scale even for however long.
The night has to end eventually.

Hurricane Helene Relief Funds
Brother Wolf Animal Rescue operates out of Asheville, which has been hit aggressively by storm and flood damage
The Asheville Survival Program is reaching out. They appear to actually be the ones who use the Cashapp $Streets1de, and they just got put with Appalachian Med for convenience.
Beloved Asheville is reaching out. www.PayPal.me/belovedasheville and venmo.com/beloved-asheville
Homeward Bound helps the homeless in the Asheville/Buncombe area
Theres a fund for smaller rural communities around Asheville. It's close to its goal, but I really wish they'd set it higher considering what people are gonna need. Someone make sure they surpass it!
Charlotte NC is reaching out. Charlotte Mutual Aid: Helene Disaster Relief. CashApp: MutualAid704. Venmo: MutualAid704. Open Collective: Helene.cltfnb.com
Olive Branch Ministry is reaching out from West NC
Josh Griffith is fundraising for his efforts to deliver food in WNC
Breathitt County in Kentucky is fundraising to help NC through the Rousseau Volunteer Fire Department, as well as asking for physical supply donations. Their paypal is jrousseauvfd, put "for NC flood". Jaxon Flower shop in Jackson KY will also take physical donations. They aren't looking for clothes, moreso cleaning supplies and other items.
North Durham Mutual Aid is reaching out.
Eastern Kentucky Mutual Aid is also reaching out for funds. There looks like there might be two orgs with similar names, but if so both are helping. There's PayPal.me/ekymutualaid, Venmo - @ekymutualaid, or Cashapp - $ekymutualaid. There's also a Facebook group where individuals are posting requests for aid.
There's a fund for relief in Erwin, Tennessee
Helbender Harm Reduction is collecting physical supplies in Knoxville alongside First Aid Collective Knoxille, whose Cashapp/Venmo is: $firstaidcollectknox. If you're nearby they're looking for clothes, blankets, shelf stable food, rain gear, flashlights, and batteries, which is what most other groups asking for supplies are looking at too.
The TriCities Mutual Aid group is mostly asking for volunteers and supplies in the Tennessee/Virginia area. However, they may shift to donations, and you can reach out to them to see if they would be welcome either way.
Food Not Bombs Tallahassee has a cashapp: $fnbtally2022. They and Mutual Aid Athens are also boosting any community calls for funds, labor, or supplies in various states on their Instagram pages
Taylor County FL is reaching out. Paypal: [email protected] and Venmo @Mskatonic138
The Footprint project's Florida team is asking for people to support their response by texting HELENE to 44-321
Since I don't know if the post I made late last night will get traction I'll reiterate that Mutual Aid Disaster Relief is a trusted org. You can send funds at the linked site, or via Paypal: [email protected] Or Venmo: @MutualAidDisasterRelief
Appalachian Med is another trusted org I shared last night. They have Venmo: @AppMedSolid. Put Flood Support in the description
Animal Disaster Relief Coalition is helping people make sure their animals are fed.
A list of Mutual Aid groups can be found here
A friend of mine, Vyn, is asking for help since he'll be out of power for around a week in Southeast GA
Other physical supplies people will be looking for in flood impacted areas include:
bottled water, potentially water filters
personal hygiene items: wipes, camping showers, tampons/pads/other menstrual products, handsanitizer, mosquito spray, laundry detergent, washboards, toilet paper, diapers, and especially any products safe for sensitive skin
medications- ibuprofen, monistat and other meds for yeast infections, cold and cough meds, any diabetic meds that can be safely shared, etc
individually wrapped low or no prep food items, baby formula, and Gatorade
duffel bags, backpacks, heavy duty storage totes and trash bags, 5 gallon buckets, coolers
Fans, dehumidifiers, moisture sensors, generators, gas and gas cans, solar charging items and battery banks, first aid kits
chainsaws, crowbars, hammers, air filters, respirators, 2×4 planks, bleach, roofing nails, heavy duty gloves, and potentially waders.
and board games or other non electric activities for children
Double check if you can before you donate these items to make sure whatever local drive you're headed to wants them and can distribute the more specialized ones where they're needed
And please! Add any funds you know of, especially for South Carolina and North Georgia since I wasn't seeing many funds for those areas! I know South Carolina is in desperate need and there's definitely parts of North Georgia in need too. Atlanta saw some bad flooding so keep an eye for them too!

i forgot that shipwreck documentaries make me cry somehow
#kai rambles#imagine having a special interest or hyperfixation on something not either bizzare depressing or concerning#ive watched so many of them before so like im rewatching them#and the only one i remember crying about was one in australia i think where i had to call my mom after just to hear her voice#but apparently disasters at sea: ignition point can also make me fucking cry#just like#there was a series of explosions on their ships#right?#and the ships going down and its on fire so everyones planning to abandon ship#including the third mate who is like did anyone make a mayday call and no one did and hes like we need rescue right now#so this guy goes up the bridge of this burning sinking ship and makes a mayday call to the coast guard and when the coast guard answers#and asks for coordinates#he doesnt give them#because hes already gone#because hes climbed on top of the bridge/wheelhouse to release the epirb which transmits your exact location to the coast guard#and continues to do so after its been released and all that#and then he comes down and he sees three guys who are planning to jump now and he stops them#because he has wits about him enough to realise the ship is sinking and hence you can jump from a lower point which will be better for you#and mind you these guys dont have immersion suits they have the clothes theyre wearing and lifejackets#and this is in the north atlantic#and so they jump when he tells them to and his plan is effective#and they manage to swim over to the lifeboat before hypothermia sets in and he pulls them in#and theyre drifting because its not a steerable one but he manages to save two othwr guys by getting them into the lifeboat#and one of them is laying on the floor barely conscious#but the coast guard arrive and theyre saved and the rescue swimmer risks his life to save them#because hes breathing in ethanol as hes swimming and once hes got them all up he needs to rehook himself but he sees four hooks not one#but like all six of them survived#mostly because of the third mate whose name is Lujon i believe#and he got an award recognising everything he did because there are five me alive solely because of him#but at the end he says something about thanking god for saving him every day and wow that just turned on the goddamn taps for me

it really is wild how these storms work. for example, here are some photos I took a few years ago when my area got hit.
that first photo looks across the street from the carnage, and despite a distance of maybe 100 ft that house was untouched, while the storm was shredding trees in front of my complex
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
the storm jumped over this cluster of buildings (including mine), then took the roofs off a gas station and two other apartment buildings in my complex, fucked up a bunch of cars, drove a tree through a house and picked up off the ground again for another mile or so before tearing up more trees and powerlines (tho not quite as dramatically as seen here).
it took two days to get power back. the red cross had to come help out.
and this was just a little baby storm, there technically wasn't enough rotation to call it a tornado, tho it was moving ~140 mph and was destructive enough to be comparable to an EF2.
gotta love living in the midwest.
I've been reading facts on Wikipedia again, and i'm overcome with the need to terrify non-Americans with the most underrated Terrifying American Thing: TORNADOES
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Due to a quirk of mountain and ocean placement, the east-central United States has a higher number of tornadoes (particularly exceptionally strong tornadoes) than any other place on Earth.
And they're so fucking scary oh my God
