Thinking again about how many disabled people end up getting shunted into art/craft work because like. You can technically do it. Sometimes. Yeah you make a pittance at best and are almost certainly going to make your physical health worse by pushing yourself to get things done, but what else are you gonna do? You're too sick for anyone to hire you. You're "not sick enough" to qualify for benefits. Just devote every scrap of time and energy you have to a chronically underpaid, low-prestige, incredibly labor-intensive industry. A few people manage to make it work with luck and help and the right skills. Many people don't. Everyone gets pressured to monetize their hobbies, but it's especially insidious if you're disabled because any tiny thing you manage to accomplish to bring yourself joy gets twisted into proof that you should somehow be able to work.

I've always wanted to make more of these but they demand so much more time and attention than my other plushies.

To achieve the furry effect, I use a delicate, thin mohair combined with regular yarn to add bulk. The wings are especially intricate, requiring sewing, gluing, and wiring. The nose is sculpted and hand painted while the eyes need to be glued and clamped down. The glue needs like 24 hours of drying time.

Even with these challenges, I’m determined to revisit this design and find a way to simplify the process.

I can't stop think about how everyone acts like Tohru's dead but he's right there. How must that feel? To be put into the position of ghost in your own life? How do you move on from the death of your dream and the unfair ending of a stage in your life if no one else will move on from it? Even his own daughter, when trying to emulate his art, tries to get in touch with him and his emotions by playacted a conversation with him instead of just picking up the phone and talking to him. How much of Akane's relationship with her dad is actually with the ghost of him- her childhood memories of her dad- instead of the flesh-and-blood human? How must that feel as a parent? As a human? To have everyone in your life (except your wife, shout out Masaki) force you into the role of living dead?

The theme of Maikeru's performance being accepting and moving on from his grief over Tohru makes me haunted by this thought even more. Tohru effectively lost all of his friends and mentors and mentees overnight because they couldn't get past their grief for him.

(And maybe now that Maikeru's put his grief to bed they can rebuild a relationship and friendship)
