I'm a white theatre person in a mostly white theatre community and you are spot on with them being lightyears behind - pretty much every theatre company I know of locally will have on their website and also on the audition postings that they 'accept anyone etc' but will continue to cast white/able bodied/skinny near exclusively.
No cuz everyone must be everyone.
Take Wicked for example. The West End is the first to have both a Black Glinda and Elphaba. Broadway has only had a Black woman play Elphaba as a swing, which is just as important, but they have yet to cast a Black performer in any prominent role outside of Brittney Johnson as Glinda a few years ago and Taye Diggs as Fieryo in their early years of being on Broadway despite said character literally being a POC in the books! Nessa Rose is always played by an able bodied performer as if there aren’t disabled performers who are very talented and very capable of playing the character. It makes no sense. It’s ok for a Black man to play the Phantom but it takes literal YEARS for a Black woman, or any woman of color for that matter, to play Christine only for Broadway to end its 20+ year run a freaking year later. Then they say “Well we should be able to play whoever we want” but when you get a Black Juliet, a Black Macbeth, a Desi man playing the Green Knight, a Black woman playing King Edward, etc we get called every slur they can think of because that statement is truly only meant for them. It is an excuse for them to disregard the importance of Black and Brown performers and everyone who works in theatre including the fans. Cuz why do you think you have the right to play TiMoune when we can’t even play a freaking fairy in a Shakespeare play without someone saying it’s unrealistic for us to have the role due to the color of our skin???? We can’t even get proper representation in freaking Hadestown which is a show that prides itself on being “diverse”. The audiences are just as much at fault too. Their racial bias is the exact reason why ticket sales plummet as soon as a Black or Brown performer is casted in a lead role. I can’t even find videos of Yola and Phillip Boykin as Hades and Persephone for god’s sake! Two dark skin and plus size performers! Grammy and Tony award winners! We have to prove ourselves to everyone including directors despite our credentials and it’s sickening.

Living with a disability, especially a progressive or dynamic one is so fucking stressful. I don't know whether I'll be able to do things I can do now in a couple of years or even a couple of months. Maybe today I'm up and dancing but tomorrow I can barely leave my bed. I'm already grieving the things I know I won't be able to do in the future and it's so, so so so hard. The worst part is that there's nothing you can do but try to enjoy life right now and hope you can keep doing what you love
#not to vent on main but this week has been hard for me#at least i have anime#and yall my friends and irl moots have been very supportive#ig my fam is supportive in their own way#seeing another specialist in a couple weeks hopefully we can make some progress#still worried i won't be able to perform if I don't have more accommodations#vent#vent post#disability#disabled#heds#potsie#pots#mcas#ehlers danlos syndrome#hypermobile ehlers danlos#the holy trinity of chronic illnesses#chronically ill#chronic illness#chronic pain#chronic fatigue

It’s ok to be disabled and happy. Being disabled does not mean you have to constantly suffer.
#disability#disability positivity#disability rights#disability justice#it’s also ok to NOT be happy#like you don’t have to perform happiness for other people’s comfort#but if you’re disabled and feeling good about yourself?#that’s really ok#you deserve happiness and people expecting you to be unhappy because you’re disabled#are shitheads#you do not have to be miserable to be disabled#and you don’t have to be happy to exist in society#two things existing at once#♥️#tw: animal#tw: bird

okay, but, like, THAT'S how you do a villain story. in the FIRST scene, you watch him shoot a man in cold blood. the show tells you right away "this man is not a good man".
but then it gets you to sympathize - look at how much the world has stepped on him. look at how terrible the whole of gotham is. and even when he kills more people, does more terrible things, you still root for him. because it's fun to watch someone be terrible to terrible people. you root for sofia too, because if anyone deserves revenge its her, but you're rooting for both of them somehow.
and then the show tells you "when he was a boy he killed his brothers". but even still, you want to see what he'll do. the show is called the penguin, you want to see the penguin rise. when he lets his mother's finger almost get cut off, you pity him. he's a sad, broken thing. how could he be anything but bad? but he loves, so there must be something else there.
but then. but THEN
the show always told you: "this is the devil". but you thought, maybe the devil can make hell a little more bearable for some people. the devil is so often nuanced, sympathetic, complex. maybe he's like that.
you're wrong. there's nothing good within him and YOU rooted for him to succeed. you wanted to watch the destruction. and now you have to live with the consequences of thinking, even for a second, that he could be redeemed.
#lauren feels things#penguin spoilers#the penguin#the penguin spoilers#network execs are always talking about how they want something#'surprising but inevitable'#which is NOTHING that's a nothing phrase#eXCEPT THIS WAS EXACTLY THAT#don't even get me started on everything else#the performances the COSTUMES!!!#the story they told with sofia's costumes!!!!!!!!!!!!!#but god#the thing that got me so good#was seeing the scratches on oz's hands as he strangled vic#just like carmine and sofia's mom#i hope sofia murders oz so bad#oh and DEF don't get me started on the POWER DYNAMICS#the conversation the show was having about power#and being a woman and being a man and being rich and being poor and being white and being disabled#and how the systems of power and oppression are not at all neat#oz is a white man born poor with a disability#but he ultimately has more privilege than sofia#sofia was born on third base and inherited her kingdom but is still a woman they called crazy#who went down for a man's crime#oz is STILL right when he calls her out for her relative privilege#they both have more power over the other depending on circumstance#and then VIC#poor non-white disabled#he gets crushed under everyone#and yet has the power of LABOR ORGANIZING!!!!!!!!!!!!

to my fellow creatives: never stop making art. art is an act of protest.
#i know that this is outside of what i normally post but a few days have passed and i've had time to think#the results of the US elections are hitting me really hard. i feel so gutted and betrayed and have no idea who the hell to trust anymore#so with that being said#I just want it to be abundantly clear that I am anti-Tr*ump and if you voted or support him in any way just unfollow me#actually do me a favor and block me#you do not deserve to read and enjoy art made by me if you think i don't deserve the right to fucking exist.#support black lives#free palestine#very fucking pro-choice#queer lives matter#disabled lives matter#i dislike the performative act of providing a list like this is a menu at a restaurant but i want there to be NO DOUBT where i stand.#there are many others who are more qualified and smarter than me to speak but i want to make it very clear to my followers where i stand.#and before someone says 'keep politics out of art' shut the actual fuck up. art and consuming art is and always will be political#and the only art worth anything is made by people like me and people who I love and support#and don't think it's only the US. the issues we have here are just as present in canada europe and asia and everywhere else.#there's so much more that i could say but that's all for now. my inbox is open.

Stop trying to read the Iliad and the Odyssey.
You're struggling to understand them, to focus on them, because you're going about it all wrong.
They're not books . They're epic poems.
They're oraccular tales. They're meant to be told. They're meant to be performed. They always were. Stop trying to read them.
Listen to the audiobooks instead. Find them on your local library app, listen to them while you're walking, find the cds at your local library, listen to them while you're driving, download them, shove them on your phone and listen to them in the night, staring up at the stars.
They're meant to be heard, to be experienced, not read.
#obviously there's nothing wrong with reading them!!!#if that works for you please do so!#I tried for YEARS to read them and I couldn't get through it#then a friend gave me the CD set of the Odyssey and it just CLICKED#these poems were performed by traveling musicians to the halls of kings and countrymen over nights of feasts#They're meant to be told by a storyteller#The Iliad#The Odyssey#this is also just my opinion so try not to send me hate for it ok?#if you read it and it moves you then!! that's great!#if you can only read it bc of disability then of COURSE read#ok to reblog

So I l’ve been getting into your ko crisis story lately (it all sounds rlly awesome btw) and i was curious - you’ve said in the tags in a previous ask that ash is comphet, so is that gonna play a major role in her character arc/journey in any way?
Yeah, the story basically covers her journey of redefining her identity as a queer Asian-American disabled woman in a sports-entertainment industry, which is a media landscape that specifically targets, exploits, and fetishizes people like her.
#ask me#itsthequeercryptid#i don't have much more to say on this cuz as of right now it's in like. early early development process and i'm not a queer woman so#i don't have much authority to say how i want this part of the story to go. even if it's my story i don't wanna set anything in stone yknow#but like. ashley's arc is realizing that she's been performing to appease people both in and out of her life. as both a daughter and a#pro boxer. and that she shouldn't have to force herself to be someone she's not. which in the story continuously hurts her#she doesn't need to validate her existence and find worthiness as a disabled and queer woman#especially to other people#one story beat i drafted is that ashley nearly gets s/a'd by a potential agent (keep in mind the project's inspired by psychological dramas#thrillers like utena and perfect blue) and it's one of the first big moments that causes her to have a crisis of identity#growing less and less comfortable in her skin - both organic and nonorganic - as she realizes how her body is perceived/ exploited/#/objectified as a vehicle for inflicting and absorbing violence. both physical and sexual. especially by men#and near the end of the story the beat is reflected/flipped when she comes together with noora and it's gentle and intimate#but again this is all very iffy. i'm not sure how appropriate this would be as a male writer.#i'm waiting to work with other writers who are more knowledgable on this before moving forward with anything

i hate the “oh they couldn’t cast a blind actress to play toph because it would be too difficult to accommodate them to film”
like yeah imagine a story about a young disabled person who overcomes challenges associated with their disability in order to become successful despite how people might underestimate them or assume them to be helpless. that has no place in avatar the last airbender.
#also imagine how influential of a figure a young performer getting to accurately portray their own disability would be#i think that’s objectively better than unnamed blind people who are ‘advising’ a sighted actor#toph beifong#avatar the last airbender#atla#natla

I have this massive AU for the Batfam (and DC in general) that spawned from a very sleep deprived "You can't just gender swap Batman, there are implications" and honest to God, it's the one thing keeping me sane.
#like#there's no way in hell you end up being the same kind of person if you are a woman#gender (much like race or class or sexuality) is such an integral part of your identity#it woukd be more socially acceptable for Alfred to “mother” Bruce#Bruce's persona would be beloved in the year of our lord 2024#but before???#she's a bimbo and it does make the cover better but it's gotta be so grating#specially the slutshaming#there's so many more people trying to wrestle control of WE industries from her#and don't get me started on the kids#Dick would struggle so much with his perception as “easy bubbly happy girl”#and her experiences of sa and eldest daughter rage#like imagine how different Dick's “happy but with anger issues” personality would be percieved#Barbara having to deal with disability when being a man is all about physical prowess#I think Jason would have a very gender moment of discovering butchness#and Tim on the other hand would be so performatively girlie#like Jack is the kind of mother that makes her daughter get into ballet because she never could#batfam#batman#genderswap#genderbend

I just think it bears repeating how well sea is doing at convincingly playing a blind man whilst still managing to portray a genuine range of emotions with his face and eyes
#last twilight#i think its so easy now to forget how many layers there are but i genuinely think he's doing amazing work with it#ive seen some-- over the top perfomances of vision impaired folk i suppose#but theres a good nuance in sea#no wonder hes tired all the time on set lmao#(also im always going to hold out hope that shows and performances like these will open up doors for disabled people to eventually get#these acting opportunities themselves(#sea tawinan

i will call myself autistic and people will think i'm just using it as a silly, chronically online, tiktok-diagnosed-me term, and then they'll spend a little bit more time with me and they're like oh
#if you know me on a super surface level i can pass as kinda normal#but the more time you spend with me the more obvious it is tbh lmao#like when i say that i am autistic i fully mean it#stimming hyperfixations meltdowns and all#the whole shebang#but it also kinda sucks that the term “autistic” has been kinda watered down so much#people don't really see me being autistic as the same as me being disabled#cause like yeah i'm autistic and i really like my silly little tv shows and spending lots of time on tumblr#but i'm also autistic and need lots of alone time in order to properly interact with other people#i'm autistic and i don't like any form of physical contact no matter how well i know you#i'm autistic and loud sudden noises affect my ability to function#i'm autistic and if i push myself too hard i WILL burnout and that will be unable to perform basic tasks#i'm autistic and eye contact is almost impossible for me#i'm autistic and i will regularly miss social cues and accidentally come across as rude#and it sucks that i'll say i'm autistic and people won't take me seriously#and then they'll act surprised when i an autistic person act autistic#but at the same time i can't lie it is kinda funny when i tell people i'm autistic and they're like#“but you seem normal”#cause oh boy#you have no idea#my posts#ah i love rambling in the tags#autism#actually autistic#autistic things
