Disability Services Department | yogability.com.au
Ensures people with disabilities receive the supports they need to live the life they choose. Programs include residential centers, skill development and family care homes, and community living arrangements.
Provides training and technical assistance to faculty, staff, students, and administrators on universal design, disability studies and issues, reasonable accommodations, technology, and barriers to programs and services.
Services
Provides a wide range of assistance to help people with disabilities live independently in their communities. Services can include transportation support, inhome care finding and paperwork assistance, as well as access to assistive technology devices. Some DDS offices also offer counseling and referrals.
CUNY's Disability Services department verify students' disabilities and arrange essential academic accommodations and support services such as priority registration, note takers, auxiliary aids, sign language interpreters, distance learning networks, and alternate testing arrangements. These services are available to any enrolled student with a documented disability.
Aging and Disability Resources Centers provide consumers of all ages with disability and their family members with benefits counseling, person-centered planning to identify available long- and short-term services and supports, application assistance and general information and referral. Some centers also offer respite care to caregivers in need of a break. Located throughout the state, these agencies are funded by OPWDD and private non-profit service provider agencies. They serve people with developmental disabilities, including intellectual disabilities, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome and autism spectrum disorders.
Programs
A variety of state, city and non-profit programs offer fundamental services to people with disabilities. In STATEN ISLAND, for example, the AHRC provides group residences, in-home and day habilitation and respite programs, as well as community centers.
The ADA ensures that all individuals with disabilities have the same access to government programs and services. It also enforces federal disability nondiscrimination laws and regulations.
Each City agency is required to appoint a Disability Service Facilitator (DSF). These individuals assist New Yorkers with disabilities in navigating City services and programs.
ODEP works to empower people with disabilities to find meaningful employment, succeed in the workplace, and achieve self-direction. The office offers a variety of resources, programs and initiatives to help people with disabilities get jobs, advance in their careers, and live independently. It also supports federal agencies and employers with a wide range of disability-related employment compliance issues.
ODEP also promotes policies and practices that increase the number of disabled employees in the workforce.
Resources
Many people with disabilities need help living life. Find information on programs that provide financial disability benefits, as well as resources for finding the right housing, medical care, employment and more.
College students with disabilities should request accommodations in advance of starting classes, but some need to take time to figure out their needs. Whether they are new to campus or need to remind themselves of what worked for them in high school, it is important to start the conversation with the college disability support services office or their instructors.
Each City agency is required by Local Law 27 of 2016 to appoint a Disability Service Facilitator (DSF). DSFs coordinate an agency’s efforts to comply with and carry out its responsibilities under the ADA and other federal and state laws regarding access to agency programs and services by persons with disabilities. Find your agency’s DSF here. DSFs also serve as liaisons to people with disabilities. The Department of Developmental Services also provides assistance to families and individuals with disabilities.

The bourgeois or "exploiting class" doesn't inherently include the person who gets their nails done biweekly, or the disabled person who has a carer, or the guy who got a $70 video game for full-price, or the person who relies on medication (yes even the ones you don't think they "need"), or anything else like this. None of these people will, on average, have the ability to exploit workers by means of ownership or whatever.
While you are busy fighting with fellow workers, you are still being exploited by your boss, by capitalism, by (potentially) not having healthcare, by being overworked and underpaid, and so are they.
#politics#feel like this wording isn't satisfactory for me but fuck it we ball#used bourgeois because i think as a colloquial word it's recognized but like...#...i dunno i think some people use it to mean 'person who can do [x]' even if they quite literally own no means of production#like the idea that you're exploiting a worker by agreeing to a service they provide isn't what bourgeois means#if i paid a carer to care for a disabled person they aren't being exploited by that disabled person...#...HOWEVER that carer absolutely can (and probably will be) exploited by the systems of power (eg their boss or capitalism)#perhaps it's too late at night for me to be posting about this but it's something that bothers me!#*especially* when it comes to disability and other groups already exploited by marginalization 👍#if your leftism percludes the disabled (including the terminally and profoundly) or the elderly or the queer or so so much i don't WANT ITTT#saw a disabled person i follow lament how afraid they were to have a carer out of fear of Being a Bad Exploitative Person#and they obviously need one and that makes me so fucking angry to know that they are needlessly suffering

RiAAU Sasha's complicated relationship with her adoptive parents, Percy and Braddock, stems from an awkward mixture of unconditional love, resentment over their inability to protect her from Grime in her childhood, and their fear of what she's become.
#raised in amphibia au#amphibia#sasha waybright#my posts#they sort it out but it takes time#percy and braddock have loved sasha since she was brought to the Tower all dirty and crying and scared at the tender age of 3#and they did their best but also... they were very young themselves. like early 20s maybe#hell they weren't even together by the time they adopted her#they were just friends who saw this kid in need of parents and legal guardians and decided to take care of her#but with Grime being their superior and Sasha being forced to grow up in the Tower...#Percy and Braddock had to do compulsory military service for like. 15 years or something idk. this is my made up toad lore: toads have to do#at least 15 years of military service in their youth. like not all of them. there's probably like some sort of lottery and if you're#disabled or had a family that depended on you or if your daddy is a corrupt politician or something you'll be spared#the rest can either follow the law and be assigned to the closest tower or like. become a runaway criminal and join a group of bandits#or something#anyway percy and braddock had to do their time in the South Toad Tower so they couldn't just leave with their kid#and raise her in a more child-friendly enviroment#another point of contention! when sasha learns there's another human who was raised in a quaint little farm by frogs in wartwood she just#it's devastating to her because *that could have been her*. she could have been safe and she could have grown up like a normal kid#she could have developed like a normal person instead of becoming... *this*#and she resents Percy and Braddock for not giving her away to someone else when she was little. for not noticing when she started#acting ''abnormal'' as a result of trauma. she could have been normal like Anne. but she wasn't.#pair that to the fact Sasha is the one who remembers Earth the most and the one who wants to go back the most#AND the one who feels the most distant to her adoptive family#and the understanding that she's been *broken into* this world and that she can never go back. even if she finds a way... she can't go back.#she can't bring her REAL parents this monster#she can't explain what happened to her#and even if she went back Amphibia would alwahs haunt her#so. she can't go back. not like this.

Oh my god I’ve been so wrapped up in looking at the small subtle ableism that is present in our world that I forgot that violent, loud, and boldly cruel ableism exists
#my thoughts#writing this paper on autism in public libraries and I read a line in a study that mentioned#that librarians have trouble promoting programs for different disabled groups due to stigma#and I was like :O oh yeah I forgot how horribly cruel people can be about something objectively good (providing inclusive services that#benefit disabled people)

shoutout to the autistic TA who clocked that i was autistic and responded to my stumbly poorly expressed verbal sentences about poems like i was saying it totally normally and encouraged me to keep explaining and said it didn't matter if i was talking in a nervous manner👍 hope she is running my seminar group because then i will not feel so anxious about it
#i have a disability support plan#which does mention that like. i probs will not talk in group settings very well#and to take into account that my “fluency of speech and style of speech” will likely not be typical#but apparently not all professors actually read the support plans#even though theyre supposed to#she was genuinely so nice though#she gave me time to formulate my thoughts into sentences#and didnt push too much#and she didnt talk to me for too long! she was like “dont worry ill leave u be just remember my seminar tips”#today has been decent but one of my socks got lost in the laundrette#although i think i will be playing run around in finding the correct mental health service at the uni#im kinda worried bc i do feel like i could easily be in crisis#but i dont do phone calls good and all the uni recommended helplines are call only#pop quiz is the student avoiding eye contact sitting alone fidgeting with a hair band not communicating typically autisitc?#experts unsure

Council consultants take six months to discover the obvious
CROYDON IN CRISIS: It has taken external consultants almost six months to discover that the council’s website is ‘jargon-heavy’, ‘corporate’ and ‘difficult’ to use. Those findings have cost the cash-strapped council at least £1m. EXCLUSIVE by STEVEN DOWNES ‘Transformation’: council CEO Katherine Kerswell, addressing the staff webinar last week After being paid at least £1million of money that…

Someone having a bad attitude/rude articulation is not the same as someone being personally mean/harmful/offensive to you.
If you can walk away from a discussion confident that neither of you said anything worth wishing you could take back then congratulations: you’ve had the real life equivalent of a negative friendliness action in the Sims and there are NO permanent negative bodily consequences! Get back on the horse, your next social interaction with someone else could easily be far better.
My hands get tense and painful when I feel socially rejected, I can fully understand it sucks bad to receive attitude you feel undeserving of especially when you perceive yourself as working hard for unconscious social praise. But just like two autistics with different stimulation needs can’t both be happy in the exact same environment “made for autistics”, not everyone can have a pleasant reaction in a social convention “meant to be pleasant” because people can’t control their physical symptoms of frustration any more than I can control that my mind goes blank and I stutter or go silent when I’m genuinely (and irrationally) scared about answering simple questions.
As humans we are all owed common decency. Common decency is not semi-conditional kindness. It’s just respect for the unknown of a person. Offering basic comforts/requirements as you feel is natural, non-threatening environment for your personal life, acknowledging you exist when you arrive and wishing you well when you depart. That is common decency. Smiling, speaking in a specific tone, and forcing your body language to work for the comfort of a group rather than flow naturally as you react to stimuli, that is kindness. It’s nice to receive kind actions from strangers, but no one is owed these things. Even if you paid for a burger or got lost in the supermarket for two hours.
#I won’t deny there’s bad ppl in customer service who ARE objectively mean and abrasive#but I feel like there’s way less of them than there are just kinda. yknow.#bitchy people 🤷🏼♀️#I’m one of them now#I didn’t used to be#just. idk. be mindful of if you’re seeing boogie men bc of past experiences#I understand when it’s your doctor or boss who’s genuinely indecent to you#it’s a matter of safety to then lower your trust and expectations of people in that group#but when you’re scolding the entirety of customer service for complaining publicly and saying WELL WHAT IF#youre straw manning. you’re thinking ‘what if I saw a video complaining about ME one day’#and I’m sorry if that were to happen and they were straight up bullying you!!!#but I think if you see a video where a server is complaining about how an interaction went down#where THEY felt dehumanized so in turn they were a bit rude to the customer#and your reaction is to think of it as an exertion of power over you bc you had smth similar BUT DIFFERENT IN NATURE AND IMPACT#you’re not seeing the big picture#if this hypothetical video contained no mocking of a disability or threats of harm to the customer etc.#the server is literally just venting about a social interaction that frustrated them bc being frustrated feels!! uncomfortable!!!#this doesn’t mean they go around judging and hating everyone that happens to behave in a similar way SOMETIMES when pushed to a limit#they’re venting with the context that they have to go through these frustrations FREQUENTLY#erasing that context makes it seem like Customer Service Workers as a group enter social interactions seeking conflict#and while it may seem common bc of sensationalism I assure you the majority of the time we are not escalating things#and we don’t let ableist people just mock others comfortabley. truly I’m sorry if this is your most common experience#just remember like. a lot of us are disabled too.#I know it’s a privilege to be ABLE to work but it is still very much a burden bc we HAVE to#disabled ppl who can’t work have so little control in their lives and I’m sympathetic to that#but I feel like it creates this huge rift with disabled ppl who can work#bc we’re perceived as having so much more control over our finances#but we dontttt. we don’t. a lot of customer vs employee spats are just ppl going band for band w disabilities#we just aren’t aware of each other in the moment#basically love each other even if it means leaving an interaction a bit sullen

so... i'm seeing a lot of activism (like, actual activism, not just tumblr posts--letters & scripts to us senators, for example, copy written for press, etc) focusing on improving ventilation & filtration as primarily an access issue for immunocompromised people. basically, presenting the argument as "this is in service of this demographic, who is blocked from public access currently."
this is like. true. of course. it is the main reason i want clean air and i think it is the most pressing reason overall for it. but i think it's the wrong tack for building a clean air movement and getting legislation passed.
like, unfortunately, the vast majority of people in power--and of americans in general, tbh--are not immunocompromised and do not have immunocompromised roommates or family members. should you have to have this experience to understand that public access is a big fucking deal for, like, staying alive? no! you shouldn't! but most people straight up will not understand whatsoever unless they have personal experience with immune compromisation.
trying to change hearts and minds to have cognitive sympathy for disabled people takes a long time, decades' worth of work to just change a handful of people; meanwhile, getting legislation passed is 1) imminently important, 2) while still a lengthy process, takes significantly less time if it doesn't hinge on first converting the majority of the population to have sympathy for a marginalized demographic they have no contact with (and yes, they have no contact with us because we are barred from public access to begin with, again, i am aware of how fucked up this is).
here's some arguments for passing clean air legislation that are designed to appeal to a normative, conservative-leaning crowd:
air filtration is a public health and sanitation baseline just like running water. we provide clean water to drink and wash our hands in as a baseline for public life; we should also be providing clean air to breathe similarly.
improved ventilation and filtration in schools results in less sick days for students, meaning better attendance and less time off work for parents.
improved ventilation and filtration in the workplace results in workers taking less sick days. it also makes it less troublesome when a coworker comes in sick; it's less likely you will have to take sick leave as a result.
improved ventilation and filtration in hospitals, doctors' offices, etc, helps combat the health care worker shortage by reducing the amount of sick leave health care workers need. it additionally makes hospitals safer overall; for example, it makes it safer for cancer patients to be in the same building with patients with highly infectious airborne illnesses such as chickenpox.
improved ventilation and filtration in public buildings at large could improve the economy, as less workers stay home, more people enter the workforce, more people begin attending public businesses like bars and venues, etc.
if government programs to upgrade ventilation and filtration are created, this could create jobs for blue-collar workers, further improving the economy.
the last note i have is that, as much as this sucks shit, don't mention covid as much as you can avoid it. covid has become a massive culture war thing in the usa and as soon as you bring it up, the entire discussion becomes about virtue-signaling and showing in-group affinity--it doesn't matter what you're saying about covid, anyone who thinks "covid is over" will immediately shut down and become incapable of listening to anything else you have to say. and unfortunately, a majority of the population does, in fact, think covid is an irrelevant concern even for immunocompromised people in 2024.
importantly, all general air sanitation improvements will improve the covid situation significantly. in this context, you do not have to talk about covid in order to make real, material changes limiting the spread of covid. system-level changes that limit the spread of things like the flu and chickenpox are equally effective in limiting the spread of covid. take advantage of that!
