Dave knowing how to play the drums makes sense to me.
Like, we all know that boy has got some kind of ADHD going on, and drums would be one of the best ways for him to fidget without unwanted attention yk?
Ofc he's still got his turntables, and honestly I can see him finding interests in other instruments too like the piano. Drum-wise though, I feel like he'd have a good time especially creating his own stuff.
Which actually brings me to my gleestuck au, (which I'll explain more about in another post) where Dave actually can't sing haha. Dirk can, and rose does really well with vocals, but Dave is the only stri-londe that cannot sing.
He and dirk will rap-off though for shits and giggles, or as a vocal warmup. Other than that, Dave basically becomes the token drummer.
Which he's more than okay with, because mans got mad stage fright. He finds it easier just being able to play the instrument because he can get lost in the sound and the motions with his hands all while ignoring the on look of people.
They also definitely make exceptions for him as the drummer, such with regionals and concerts yk? He even learns how to play guitar for specific songs the club sings ahhhh

do u have any more marchinstuck headcanons… im kinda obsessed with it…
literally so excited you asked here are some of my faves
Dave played sax for like a month but is total dogshit at playing woodwinds so he decided percussion was cooler
Jade and John can both play a couple instruments, Jade plays mellophone, french horn, flute, and a little sax, while John plays trumpet, piano, and trombone
I think I drew this one a little but Terezi and Vriska each try to play as loud as possible when playing stands tunes so that they're louder than each other
Tavros plays trumpet for concert band but does front ensemble for marching band since my man can't march
He does get to play a trumpet solo their senior year and he fucking crushes it thank you very much
Dirk is the woodwind section leader
Karkat is a drum major so he always has to help put front ensamble stuff away and Dave annoys the fuck out of him while they do
Most of the characters are juniors except for the alpha kids
I hope this was informative, I might continue marchinstuck stuff eventually but probably not any time in the next month lol

Dirk Bogarde in Death in Venice (Luchino Visconti, 1971)
Cast: Dirk Bogard, Björn Andrésen, Marisa Berenson, Mark Burns, Silvana Mangano, Romolo Valli, Nora Ricci, Leslie French, Franco Fabrizi. Screenplay: Luchino Visconti, Nicola Badalucco, based on a novel by Thomas Mann. Cinematography: Pasqualino De Santis. Art direction: Ferdinando Scarfiotti. Film editing: Ruggero Mastroianni.
I have nothing against slowness in movies if it leads to a satisfactorily immersive experience, but Death in Venice is just languorous, taking its own weary way toward the conclusion promised in the film's title. Watching it patiently has some rewards: Dirk Bogarde's fine performance as Gustave von Aschenbach; the sometimes opulent, sometimes melancholy views of Venice provided by Pasqualino De Santis's cinematography; the handsome sets by Ferdinando Scarfiotti and costumes by Piero Tosi; loving glimpses of Silvana Mangano as Tadzio's mother; and great gulps of Mahler's third and fifth symphonies on the soundtrack. But the screenplay by Visconti and Nicola Badalucco carries no intellectual or emotional weight. Thomas Mann's novella is meant to be savored and reflected upon, but film inevitably carries us along with our expectations of action, and there is little enough of it going on anywhere but in Aschenbach's head to provide Visconti with something to shoot. He resorts to flashbacks: to the illness that causes Aschenbach to take his fatal trip, to the happy days of Aschenbach's marriage (Marisa Berenson plays his wife) and the devastating death of their child, to a visit to a prostitute who plays Beethoven's Für Elise on the piano, to the storm of cheers and boos at the performance of Aschenbach's composition (actually an excerpt from the Mahler third symphony) and an argument with a friend (Mark Burns) about his music. The beautiful young Tadzio (Björn Andrésen) clearly represents something that has been lost from (or never present in) Aschenbach's life, But Visconti never makes Aschenbach's obsession with Tadzio either psychologically or thematically convincing. In the end we're left with little more than Aschenbach as the aging gay man doomed to a lonely death -- a too-familiar trope.

Noe Bodi Gameplay, Day 13
New neighbor moved into Oasis Springs!
Donna Richmond (@elysiantrait) is trying to strike out on her own as an entertainer.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here she is practicing piano ballads.
Tumblr media
That didn't last long; her hunger led her to the kitchen, where she kinda blew it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But at least she extinguished it herself!!!
Tumblr media
Just then, Noe Bodi materialized in front of her house.
Tumblr media
Apparently Noe is currently a "Notable Newcomer" celebrity, which made Donna lose her mind trying to introduce herself.
Tumblr media
Noe was not impressed.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But apparently it wasn't so cringe that they couldn't watch TV together randomly.
Tumblr media
Noe even agreed to a selfie!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
SO all in all it was a nice first meeting.
Later on, Donna was practicing singing...
Tumblr media
When she had the urge to travel to a public venue. So I picked the gym.
Tumblr media
And there, she met Rhea (@fl0pera).
Tumblr media
They waved at each other in a crowd of random townies lol.
Tumblr media
Then the townie Dirk Dreamer stopped by.
Tumblr media
And he's a bigger deal than Noe in this world, so Donna got even more out of control trying to say hi to him!
Tumblr media
That man was also not impressed.
Tumblr media
And after TWO embarrassing celebrity meets, Donna needed to let off some steam in the punching bag room--
Tumblr media
--and then go the hell home.

[S] Prince of Heart: Rise up.
youtube
song used: Time on My Side by Tensei
song commentary:
Tensei:
With the Strife album, I deliberately left a lot of the background to the songs very ambiguous. There are no direct, obvious references as to what song corresponds to which character, though there are quite a few indications: each song uses an instrument that is typically associated with one of the kids in a pretty prominent way: whether it’s the piano lead in Heir Conditioning, the solo violin in Dance of Thorns, the bass and flute (shakuhachi, actually) in Atomic Bonsai, and of course the sampled beats and scratches in Time on my Side. I suppose the titles count as somewhat vague references to the characters as well.
With that said, I’m still not going to explicitly say “This song is actually a strife theme for Dave” or something like that. If Andrew chooses to interpret it as a good backdrop for a fight between Dirk and Jake, I am totally fine with that. Hell, I can totally see it working (And in fact it DID work, since the flash turned out pretty damn awesome)
I always felt like this song was a bit of the odd man out on the album. While I definitely think Dance of Thorns and Atomic Bonsai were awesome in their own right, they also feel a lot more ‘conventional’ compared to this song.
In a lot of ways, this song is actually very minimalistic. The droning bassline and guitar chugs stay on the same chord for almost a full minute while the buildup is mostly done through sound effects and overlayed orchestral sounds.
IMO, this results in giving the :53 point, where the chords finally start switching up, a much bigger impact (though the full Beatdown motif coming in probably helps too).
Something similar happens at 2:04 where after 30 seconds of the Black motif remaining on the same chord again, you get another switch, and everything just sounds huuuuuuge.
Appropriately to the title, this song has a lot of weird time-shit going on. Disc scratching in and of itself can actually be treated as a nice metaphor for time manipulation (the comic itself definitely makes grateful use of it), so it’s no wonder that it’s almost omnipresent here.
By far the neatest thing, in my opinion, is 2:35 though. The effect you hear there is actually the ENTIRE SONG up until that point, played in reverse, and sped up so it fits in a couple of seconds. The idea is literally that it ‘scratches’ and resets the song, much in the same way as happens to the entire universe in the comic, so it can lay down a wicked wah-guitar solo over the ‘scratched’ version of the song.
So yes, this song travels back in time in order to make itself awesomer.
Joking aside, this song, like most other ones I make, does also have some sneaky hidden references.
The guitar riff at 3:18, for example, is cribbed pretty much note for note from the Metallica song Master of Puppets (maybe this is a Dirk song after all?). The background strings at :37 have a very similar ascending chromatic pattern the intro to the James Bond theme. The high staccato strings at 1:50 are supposed to be reminiscent of the theme from Psycho, or really every slasher flick ever. (Black is associated with Jack Noir, Jack Noir likes to show people his stabs, etc.)
The original inspiration for this song probably comes from the least likely source imaginable. It’s not The Prodigy or Goldeneye 64 music, but actually the original score to the movie Space Jam. You probably don’t even know or remember it, but a lot of the songs have a very distinct looped hiphop beat, guitars, and orchestral stabs all over the place, much like a large portion of this song.
Seriously, listen to this from about 0:50 onward and you should hear the resemblance.
That aside, obviously stuff from The Prodigy’s Fat of the Land album bears some resemblance as well, especially with the cheesy bassline. I know that a few Prodigy songs have been used in the otherwise kinda shitty Charlie’s Angels movies whenever shit was about to go down, and that’s really the kind of vibe I was going for as well.

Rhiannon Giddens Can’t Be Pinned Down to Just One Sound at the Beacon Theatre on Saturday
Tumblr media
Rhiannon Giddens – Beacon Theatre – March 16, 2024
Looking down upon the stage from the balcony of the Beacon Theatre awaiting the start of the Rhiannon Giddens show, I was compelled to take stock of all the instruments onstage: multiple banjos, guitars, keyboards, basses, fiddles, accordions. There were at least two of everything, which invited the question of how Giddens and her band were going to use all those music-makers. By the time the show had ended, some 90 minutes later, the sold-out crowd ecstatic in appreciation, the answer was clear: Those instruments would be used every which way and then some.
The opening instrumental, “Following the North Star,” found Giddens and Dirk Powell going back-and-forth with banjo and fiddle respectively, drums driving a lively rhythm behind them. The six-piece band then settled into “The Love We Almost Had,” which suggested old-school jazz, Powell now on piano matching Francesco Turrisi on organ, with Giddens providing an Ella Fitzgerald–esque scat solo. From there, permutations of players, instruments and genres turned the band into a two-guitar blues outfit on “Wrong Kind of Right,” an accordion-heavy Creole band on “Dimanche Apres-Midi,” a psychedelic Americana ensemble on “Louisiana Man” — a set highlight — an Aretha-soul group on “Too Little, Too Late, Too Bad,” and traditional folkies on “God Gave Noah the Rainbow Sign.”
Throughout, it was Giddens’ voice and talent and make-the-historical-present worldview that tied it all together. The band’s fun free-for-all was balanced by weightier material: Giddens describing the painful separation of families to introduce “Come Love Come,” fiddle, organ and guitar adding musical pathos to the song, and then the dark rocker “Another Wasted Life,” inspired by the tragic story of Kalief Browder. Despite the serious material, the music was infused with joy and optimism, and Giddens made sure to end on an uplifting note, closing with “Yet to Be,” filling the theater with the words: “Today may break your heart, but tomorrow holds the key / We’ve come so far, but the best is yet to be.”  —A. RHIANNON GIDDENS with Adia Victoria, THE SHELDON CONCERT HALL, 14 SEPTEMBER 2023
I don’t need no MacArthur Foundation to know that RHIANNON GIDDENS is a genius. I put her on our list for the Sheldon concert order. Then I read that this would be in support of an album of original songs and had my singer-songwriter hesitations. Then I listed to the album You’re The One and am thrilled that I got to hear those songs and the contexts she put them in.
The album is a remarkable survey of tunes written in various African American genres, including a country song inspired by Dolly Parton but also Zydeco, swing jazz, r&b, soul, and jazz. She has a supple and versatile voice—and she didn’t even evoke the opera she studied at Oberlin (and she’s written one too).
Her band was equally versatile, including the nephew who sat in for a rap during the Nina Simone inflected, I thought, protest Another Wasted Life and then played bones during the pre-encore finale of North Carolina fiddle tunes led by Dirk Powell who is a familiar name from maybe a David Grier or Tim O’Brien album. He also played piano, a Telecaster, and acoustic guitar. The other guitarist, if not African himself, had Nigerian High Life and Senegalese kora sounds, including a fascinating jam with Powell on You Louisiana Man. The keyboard player also played accordion; the bassist acoustic and electric.
So they could capture the scope of the album. Giddens name checked Aretha Franklin before Too Little Too Late Too Bad which opens the album, though the show opened with the title cut for her kids. She played some banjo and some fiddle, maybe it was a viola (???). She was barefoot under her flowing skirt and they brought her mugs of tea no less frequently than every third song.
With musical ambition to capture the African American experience, there was of course the social consciousness those experiences taught her and all of us. I gravitated to her emphasis on similiarities over differences, that, with the very premise of the Carolina Chocolate Drops, old time music was Black and white and that the banjo had African roots. And when people got together to make music, they also made babies. She’s one of those biracial babies and that’s the story she and Jason Isbell told with Yet To Be.
Wonderful show.
The opener was Adia Victoria who had a breathy voice that obscured her lyrics, but her accompanist, Mason Hickman, played electric guitar with lots of reverb and effects. He created a mood. She styled herself as a blues singer, with gothic elements to be sure, but I didn’t hear it. But Giddens values her and, even more, she values Giddens.
So do I.

Random Homestuck Headcanon I'm aware is pure fluff
Seeing as both Roxy and Dirk had rooms we can assume that Alpha!Rose knew they'd be temporally created and crash to Earth at some point. Despite Alpha!Dave mainly making things for his son/bro/technical father, I wanna believe he made something for his daughter/sister/technical mother(who, ironically, he's more like) too.
TL;DR In-universe, "Pumpkin Party in Sea Hitler's Water Apocalypse" was made by Alpha!Dave, and was the last track he ever composed before The Batterwitch killed him and Alpha!Rose.
One of Roxy's themes is in Vol. 9 of the Soundtrack: "Pumpkin Party in Sea Hitler's Water Apocalypse"(One of my personal favorite HS songs), which covers a lot of instruments. There's Square Waves, Banjo, Accordion(or probably what it is, Concertina, considering the water theme and how that's an instrument that's linked with the Active counterpart to Roxy's Class; Pirates), Bass, some whistling, and notably for any version of Dave, turntable noises.
All the Beta Kids are linked with musical instruments. John, the piano. Rose, violin. Jade, her bass. Dave, however? His instrument is turntables. It's what he adds to "Derse Dreamers" from the "Prospit and Derse" album. Heck, it's what represents the Scratch mechanisim on LOHAC, as well as being the instrument used for time travel.
Point is, there's a lot of things linking this theme to Dave in its instrumentation. What if, stick with me on this, after Alpha!Dave became rich from the Sweet Bro and Hella Jeff movies, once he heard of Rose's future daughter, he started composing a music track(Alpha!Bro is stated to have had a media empire. Considering Dave's Aspect, surely that would include music!!) one day. Filling it with all these layers, with his partner in rebellion helping him plan the instrumentation(Seers are aware to know through a Scratch. That's why The Signless started his movement on Alternia in the first place). His music producer was quite alarmed at the possible titles Mr. Strider was considering for this piece and the passion he was pouring into it; thought the man was planning to send his life off with a bang! Ultimately, under the suggestion of Alpha!Rose, he called it "pink project", taking the offical recording of the only mix as The Drones and ) (IC were approaching where he and Alpha!Rose were holed up, thus explaining what sounds like air raid sirens and the stomping in the background of the song.
400 years later Dirk learned of the song and, wanting to share it with someone without breaking the timeline before SBURB, sent it to Roxy. Her Carapacian neighbors hear it once, and start associating it with their kind, pumpkin-providing human. Even Dirk himself gets in on this, making a part of it his ringtone for Roxy on Earth-C.
CONSIDER PEOPLE!!

Headcanon Anon here with the kids' individual senses of humor!
John-Zany, prank-filled, with slapstick! Not out to hurt anyone's feelings, just mildly annoy/confuse strangers and friends and family.
Rose-Snark, dark humor, casually intrusive wordplay. Has a hidden goofy side that only friends know about but likes to present herself as a Rule 63 Cigarette Smoking Man from X-Files with an even worse sense of humor.
Dave-Anti-humor with rambling monologues and left-fielders galore. Probably went to sleep watching Tim & Eric and would get along great with Neil Hamburger.
Jade-Loves math humor and feghoots; actually likes to work for her laughs, the poor soul (Remember, she is canonically able to make Kanaya laugh so make of that what you will.)
Terezi-Sick, distressing, prank-filled sense of humor that's a dark mirror of John's. Basically swears by the healing power of schadenfreude. Could take Eric Andre's desk in a heartbeat.
Kanaya-Morbid, literalist sense of humor. So dry that most people don't tend to know if she's joking or not.
Tavros-Self-deprecating, surprisingly dark at times sense of humor. Casually mocks any unfortunate events that befall him, regardless of the seriousness.
Karkat-Wants to come off as serious but likes it when people show dedication to a joke, like H Jon Benjamin's jazz piano album.
Sollux-Loves snarking and loves being snarked at. Is also partial to particularly negative reviews of things as long as it doesn't rely on shouting and obvious bias.
Feferi-Very juvenile sense of humor with a love of puns, toilet humor and bring up sexual topics in non-sexual situations. Giggles everytime at the "hide under there/under where?" gag.
Eridan-Not really a laugher but does chuckle at hearing a good pun every once in a while.
Nepeta-Loves her puns and her small pranks like hiding kills in friend's pillows. Thinks pushing cups off tables is the height of comedy.
Equius-Enjoys gentlemanly Oscar Wilde-esque snark; also enjoys his share of puns.
Meenah-Loves puns, pain, people being in pain, breaking stuff, and Aranea's long-winded shaggy dog stories. She'll kill you if you tell anyone the last part though.
Vriska-No sense of humor. Does funny things, says funny stuff but has no timing, can't tell a joke to save her life and hates comedies.
Jane-Loves sitcoms, one-liners from detective dramas and verbal bathos.
Jake-Loves one-liners and pratfalls. As well as the good ribbing from any of his friends.
Roxy-Loves pranks, flirtations (even more than Rose, believe it or not) and coding humor.
Dirk-Very dark sense of humor and loves to keep people in the dark about how serious he is about any given topic; he likes it even more when even he doesn't know (re: his MLP obsession)
Aradia-Twisted sense of humor almost as dark as Dirk's; believes nothing's off the table and will only stop when her target audience tells her to, nothing more, nothing less.
Gamzee-Loves bad jokes and stupid sounds; will probably laugh at a joke without you having to finish it.
Damara-Sexual humor is her main weapon and everything is looking like a target; will do anything outside of actual battery to make her target uncomfortable.
Rufioh-Has a wide range of humor but seems to prefer observational comedy.

Roll For Charisma
author's note: this is a rewrite of a two year-old fic i abandoned back in 2020. so, if this looks familiar, no it doesn't! ship: dirkjohn! (not just yet tho. we'll get there eventually) warnings: passing mentions of Dave having broken an arm, but nothing graphic. humanstuck? would that count? word count: 2,678
Summertime! John always loved summer. He wasn’t really a kid that went out and played outside during the summer, but he did love the freedom that came with the season. No school, the weather is always nice and warm, and he had more than enough time to practice on the piano. Plus, he can go see his friends whenever he wants! It’s awesome.
He took a deep breath as the wind rustled the trees and windchimes. Contrary to popular belief, his neighbourhood was pretty quiet in the summer. Sure, there was a community pool, but it was pretty far from his part of the neighbourhood. Besides, he likes going on walks more than swimming.
He looked around at the houses on either side of him. He has almost the entire neighbourhood remembered. He’s been here his entire life. He smiled slightly at the familiarity of it all. He wondered if he’d ever get tired of it.
He continued his walk in relative silence, listening to the birds sing and leafs shuffle against each other. It was… very peaceful. Like nothing could ever go wrong.
… Until something did go wrong.
He yelped as someone crashed into him, grabbing onto his shirt and causing both of them to plummet into someone’s yard. The impact knocked the air clean out of him, and for a second he thought he felt some bone in his body pop. Behind him, he could hear the sound of wood and wheels bouncing against the pavement before coming to a sudden stop.
John wheezed, curling in on himself in pain.
He heard a familiar monotone laugh next to him.
After a long moment of silence, John finally opened his eyes to see one Dave Strider sprawled out on his back in the grass, a completely deadpan expression on his face.
“Hey Dave,” John croaked.
“Sup,” he responded.
They laid in silence before Dave stood up, like nothing happened, and offered John a hand. He gladly took it, wheezing out a laugh. Dave let go and adjusted his shades to higher up on the bridge of his nose before looking around.
“Why’d you almost kill me, man?” John asked in a joking tone.
Dave smirked for about half a second at the question. “I was goin’ downhill, you were goin’ up,” he said, making small gestures with his hand as he spoke. “We both would’ve died if I didn’t go for this dude’s lawn. Probably, like, broken an arm or some shit. I mean, I broke my arm before, so no biggie.”
John hummed, following after Dave as he began to walk off. “Well, good thing we didn’t land in the street!”
“Yeah, no shit.”
There was a breath of silence before Dave spoke up again. “Anyway, I was headin’ for your house to tell you something. Finally convinced Bro to get this sick ass nerd game I think you’d like. Dirk never shuts up about it.”
He knelt down and pried his longboard out of a bush, picking a few leafs out of the wheels before standing up again.
“I’m only saying that so you’ll wanna play it. I’d never want to, I fuckin’ suck at math.”
John tilted his head in curiosity. “What’s it called?”
Dave made a few gestures with his hand, trying to remember. He snapped his fingers a few times. “Dragons and… something, I think? Somethin’ stupid like that. It’s like… an adventure game, but… a board game? But also… not? You get what I’m saying, right?” He turned to face John, who now felt like he was being put on the spot.
“I– I think?” John replied, a little confused.
“Cool, because I don’t know how to explain it.” He made his way to the sidewalk, setting down his longboard and holding it in place with one foot. “Let’s boogie to the store then.”
John laughed quietly as he walked over. “Since when did you say boogie?”
Dave’s cool composer faltered for just a moment before he brushed it off. “The dumb stuff Dirk says is rubbin’ off on me. Now get on the board before I make you walk.”
John stuck his tongue out at Dave, who did the same in return.
Carefully, they both got on and they were off.
They’ve been doing this for years now, precariously riding on the same longboard since John didn’t own one and Dave’s had one long before they ever met. It wasn’t the safest thing, obviously, but they know how to not fall off.
Most of the time.
Dave ended up breaking his arm for the second time when they were riding together. Honestly, John is still surprised Dave trusts him enough to keep this as their primary means of transportation.
After some time, and an unreasonably long argument about musicals, they finally reached the shop. John hopped off the board and stared, wide-eyed at the shop. He’d only ever heard about it from Dave’s complaints and customer-bashing. He’d never seen it in person.
One story, but pretty big from the look of it. The windows had drawings of fantasy creatures, and bold, fancy text that let any passers-by know about what they sold. There was a sign standing near the door talking about a special deal with your first purchase. Free dice.
Dave barely acknowledged it as he walked past John.
“A free set of dice with your very first purchase?” John echoed the words on the sign, and Dave whipped around to look at him.
He stared at John in confusion for a moment before he looked at the sign. “Oh! Yeah, I was behind that brilliant idea. Bro wanted more customers, so he finally fuckin’ listened to us on something.” He laughed, but it was clear that his older brother pissed him off.
John hummed, a sympathetic look on his face. He stepped back slightly and read the sign that hung above the front door. It was wooden, and had a fancy mediaeval-style font that read Strider’s Tabletop Shop. John laughed a little at it. It was fun to say.
After that, John finally made his way inside, Dave following close behind.
A little bell rang as he opened the door, and the boy at the counter looked up. He looked almost exactly like Dave; dark skin with pale patches from vitiligo, blond hair, and pretty damn muscular. That’s really where the similarities end, though. He wore sharp, triangular shades, a mullet, and a bright orange bracelet. He leaned forward, resting his chin on his palm.
“About damn time you got here. I think I would’ve offed myself if I had to take any more of Terezi’s complaints.” As he said that, someone from the back of the store gasped, as if offended.
Whoever it was that gasped walked over from behind a shelf and looked in the general direction of the counter. “I’m not complaining, just giving… constructive criticism.”
That must be Terezi. She definitely stood out against the dark colours of the shop. She had on a wildly coloured outfit, probably hundreds of bracelets, and almost neon red streaks of colour in her hair. What was strangest about it was that it… actually looked pretty good. What the fuck?
The boy at the counter scoffed, waving his hand dismissively. “You’re still complaining.”
Terezi scowled, but not in a serious way. “Whatever. The only complaint I have is your stench. You smell like a dumpster fire. Have you ever tried deodorant?”
“I have, thank you.”
Terezi made a motion with her head that mimicked an eye roll before turning around and going back to what she was doing.
John just sort of… stood there, not really knowing what to do. Dave stared blankly, seemingly unamused. The boy at the counter looked at Dave, then at John.
“Who’s that?” He asked, getting Dave’s attention.
Dave made a face of what could be described as… annoyance? It’s really hard to tell with this guy.
“John? Egbert? The total dweeb I’ve been friends with for uh…” Dave snapped his fingers as he made his way to the counter.
“Seven years,” John added, and Dave nodded.
“Seven years. Seven! How do you not know who this guy is?” Dave leaned down and tucked his longboard under the counter. “Oh, yeah, uh… John, this is Dirk. My twin,” he added, gesturing to Dirk.
Ohhhh so that’s who Dirk is. John always thought there were just two Striders. That’s cool.
“Nice to meet you, John,” Dirk said in a tone similar to Dave’s.
“Nice to meet you too,” John said with a smile.
Dave stared at the both of them for a moment before resting his arm on Dirk’s head.
“So, how do you like the place?” Dave asked, struggling to keep his balance as Dirk tried to push him off. They were both clearly holding back smiles.
John laughed quietly at the scene before looking around. “It’s pretty cool.”
“Of course it is, I run the place.”
Dirk raised an eyebrow, finally deciding to just stand up to get his brother off him. “You run the place?”
Dave grunted as he temporarily lost his balance. He managed to play it off by leaning against the counter he just stumbled into. “When Bro dies, then yeah, I will,” he said with a snarky look on his face.
Dirk just stared blankly at Dave. There was a sort of tension filling the air, like the twins were waiting for something to happen to them. Dirk glanced back and forth between Dave and John before gently hitting Dave on the forehead and turning his attention to John.
“So, Dave dragged you here for something?”
John nodded, stepping closer to the counter. “Yeah! Something with dragons in it, right?”
Dave clearly didn’t want to stick around for this conversation, so he made his way to the back of the shop, leaving the pair alone. John could see Dave trip over something in the corner of his vision and had to hold back a giggle.
“Oh, Dungeons and Dragons. Yeah, it’s a pretty cool game. Real easy on the player’s part, too. Just dice rolling and some, uh…” Dirk trailed off as he looked around. Apparently, he didn’t notice that Dave left. He turned back to John. “Uh… y’know, roleplaying, I guess.” He took off his bracelet and began fidgeting with it.
“Oh, that’s cool. I think I can do that,” John responded, suddenly feeling a little awkward.
The two sat in silence for a moment before Dirk cleared his throat, standing up a little straighter. “Anyway, uh, yeah. Y’know, I’ve… played before. Mostly just… DMing. Runnin’ the game, writing the story… for it.”
John tilted his head to the side in confusion. “DMing?”
“Oh, um… Dungeon Master. They’re like, uh… I dunno how to explain it. DMs run the game. Write the story for it, make up non-player characters, all that jazz.”
“Oh, okay! That sounds pretty interesting.”
Dirk nodded in response, leaving the two in a breath of silence.
“Do you know anyone that could teach me how to play?” John said before the silence got too long.
Dirk perked up at the question, turning his head slightly to stare out the window. “Nah, not really. I’m kinda the only person in miles that’s experienced.” After finishing that sentence, he turned around, peering over to where Terezi was running her finger along the spine of a book. “... Besides Terezi. You don’t wanna learn from her.”
“I heard that,” she called as she pulled the book from the shelf. “Do you have this in braille?”
“Bro, just use the PDFs I sent you.”
“Pirating content is illegal.”
Dirk made a small, exasperated gesture with his hands, shaking his head slightly in confusion. “Then why did you ask for them?!”
Terezi giggled, and that was the only response Dirk got. He turned to back John, shaking his head. “I don’t know how we’re still friends. Anyway,” he huffed, gently tapping his knuckles against the countertop. “Uh… yeah, that’s… really about it.”
John pulled his hands out of his pockets and rested them on the countertop. He could see the faint movement of Dirk’s eyes from behind his shades as he tossed a glance at John’s hands. “I guess it’s settled then!”
Dirk seemed taken aback, face scrunching up slightly in confusion. “What’s settled?”
“The game. You could teach me how to play.”
Dirk stood still for a moment before quickly shaking his head, as if shaking away his surprise. “Uh– Yeah, sure. We can do that. I’ll… I can help you out with making a character, or something. It’s confusing at first.”
John smiled. “Awesome! Thanks!” He stared at Dirk for a moment, not really sure what to do now. He’ll have to go get Dave to take him back home.
The pair stood in silence before John perked up. “Oh! I should probably give you my number,” he laughed.
“Oh, yeah, that’d… that’d be a good idea,” Dirk responded as he pulled out his phone.
They quickly exchanged numbers and John walked a little farther into the store to find Dave.
Thankfully, he wasn’t doing much besides chatting to one of the customers about some game called… fiduspawn? He didn’t really want to know. He went over to Dave and poked him in the arm to get his attention. Dave almost instantly turned to face John.
“What’s up?”
“Can you take me back home? My dad’s at work.”
“Oh, yeah, for sure.” Dave turned back to the person he was talking to. “I dunno, you’d probably do pretty good in a tournament with those cards. I’m not really into that whole scene, but the stats on these guys are fucked. Where’d you even find them?”
“Collectors. I know, they’re, like, really valuable, but they have perfect stats! How can I not use them?”
Dave hummed. “Yeah, I guess. Well, good luck, man.”
“Thanks, I need it,” he laughed.
Dave turned back to John, elbowing him gently before walking to the counter. John followed after him, scrolling through all the silly pictures on his phone, looking for one to set as Dirk’s contact photo. He accidentally bumped into the counter, hissing in pain. Hasn’t he taken enough of a beating today?
“We’re outta here,” Dave said as he picked up his longboard.
“You just got here,” Dirk said, in the middle of helping a customer with a purchase.
“Yeah, and now we’re outta here. My shift is tomorrow.”
Dirk shook his head gently before telling the customer to have a good day. He turned to look at Dave, the two of them seemingly exchanging words in complete silence. Or something.
“You blinked,” Dave said with a shit-eating grin.
“Oh my God. Fuck off,” Dirk responded, smiling ever so slightly. “Don’t crash your board.”
Dave started toward the front door, John following suit. “No promises.”
John gasped, gently punching Dave on the shoulder blade. “Hey, asshole! I’m riding with you! Absolutely promises!”
“Whatever, man. What’s gonna happen? Broken arm? Chipped tooth?” Dave swung the doors open all casual, like it was nothing. “Nothin’ a cast and painkillers won’t fix.”
John shook his head. He couldn’t help but smile at his stupid jokes. “Let’s just go already.”
Dave chuckled and set his board down, resting one foot on it. John turned around, staring through the clear doors at Dirk. He waved at him. Dirk looked up, glanced around, then waved back. John smiled a little wider and turned back around.
“Wow, already flirting?”
John practically jumped out of his skin at the comment. “We just met! How was that flirting?!”
Dave just stared at him, raising his eyebrows in expectation.
“I– shut up! I don’t even like guys!” John said that a little louder than he wanted to.
“Man, I’m just fuckin’ with you. Get on,” he said with a gentle laugh.
John grumbled and got on the board. He stared at the shop until it vanished behind other buildings. He pulled his phone out his pocket as he got a text from Dirk. He couldn’t help but smile.

Just saw a post on here asking if Elijah Wood got typecast into roles that require lots of walking around after his success in LOTR trilogy, and since I’m currently not allowed to watch movies for a while, here’s a list of (hopefully interesting enough) coincidences about Wood’s characters that I’ve noticed after binging about 30 films starring him in 1 month.
Please note that this is only a non-exhaustive list, because there’re still a lot of his films that I haven’t watched. If you want to add anything to this (supposed you stumbled onto this list floating in nowhere-land first lol), you’re welcome to do so!
Films in which Wood’s characters walk around a lot (and most of whom are also melancholy little boys):
The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Need I explain more? The man walked straight into Mordor.
Over the Garden Wall. The boy Wood voiced wandered with his little brother through many places in a land (a realm? a secret dimension?) called The Unknown in search of a way home. Since it is now October and the spooky season has officially begun, I’d recommend everyone to give this series a try, it’s very good.
Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency. Yet another show in which Wood’s character had to drag himself around a lot, this time as a reluctant sidekick to an eccentric self-proclaimed detective.
Everything Is Illuminated. Wood portrayed the protagonist in this film, a young American Jew embarking on a quest to find a woman who had saved his grandfather’s life during the Holocaust. An exceptional movie with an overall talented cast, very much recommended.
I Don’t Feel at Home in This World Anymore. In this film he also played a sidekick (should I call Tony a jock?), but this time is to a depressed woman who just wanted to do the right thing. This film is very strange indeed, but the two main characters (the woman and Wood’s character) owns my heart and I love the positive message of it as well. Also, Melanie Lynskey (who portrayed the woman) also voiced Beatrice the Blue Bird in Over the Garden Wall, so those who adore OTGW can consider giving this film a try, it’s available on Netflix.
Radio Flyer. Wood’s character in this movie was a 11-year-old boy who had to wander around with his little brother to avoid their violent step-father. This film kinda irked me in some ways (not gonna explain because that would be a huge spoiler), still, the acting of the two boys broke my heart.
The Good Son. Another film in which Wood’s character wandered off with another child character (portrayed by Macaulay Culkin), but it took on a darker plot.
The Faculty. Yeah people ran around fighting monsters in this film. Wood’s character was not an exception.
9 (often referred to as Shane Acker’s 9). Another voiceover work from Wood, this time for a character running around in a post-apocalyptic world in search of his kins.
Cooties. Also this movie is (kind of) a mess, but I gotta give props to it for making use of Wood’s tininess (?) for an important plot point, a detail about him that is rarely employed, except for LOTR. Oh, and Cooties also referenced LOTR too, make sure you catch it.
Paris, je t’aime. Wood had a total screen time of around 6 minutes in this anthology film, but in my opinion his arc was one of the most memorable. I mean, in this overall realistic and bittersweet film, who the hell expected a freaking vampire story?
Maniac. Wood’s character went around in the city doing messed up sh*ts. If you want to watch this film, please search for all of its trigger warnings, and prepare your mental state properly before walking into it. The only film on this list that made me scream, “Hey man, sit the f*ck down, don’t go anywhere.”
North. In this film Wood played a boy who travelled the world to find perfect parents. That’s basically the premise that I snatched on IMDb because I haven’t watched this one.
Films in which Wood’s characters are some kinds of artist or make arts:
Grand Piano. He portrayed a rather young pianist with stage fright. This film centered around a concert, so during most of its length Wood played the piano, and as someone with the tiniest bit of experience, I gotta say his acting looked realistic enough.
Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency. Wood’s character used to be the lead singer and guitarist of a band called Mexican Funeral, and even though the band was no longer active, he still occasionally played music with his sister (just the guitar, he didn’t even sing, as far as I remember).
Over the Garden Wall. The boy Wood portrayed could play the bassoon and write poems. He *spoiler alert* recorded a cassette tape for his crush, in which he played the bassoon and read out loud the poems that he wrote for her. Pretty sweet. Also, he sang at some points in the show.
Set Fire to the Stars. In this film Wood played John Malcolm Brinnin, a poet and literary critic. This film’s cinematography and editing is very stylistic, but I can’t say I know enough about poetry to judge its portrayal of the real-life figures.
Come to Daddy. Wood’s character introduced himself as a music producer, but this detail was not explored further.
Cooties. An aspiring writer who sucked at writing.
(Not having Frodo Baggins on this category is such a crime.)
Films in which Wood’s characters’ names are the various forms of the name ‘Mike’:
Avalon. He portrayed a young boy named Michael Kaye. Also this film is currently my favorite out of all Wood’s films I’ve watched. A freaking masterpiece.
Radio Flyer. The boy Wood played named Mike (not sure about his surname), and sometimes people called him Mikey too.
The Ice Storm. His character is Mikey Carver (whose surname was changed from the original novel’s Mikey Williams, for some reasons). And people, this is another one of my personal favorite films on this list (alongside Avalon and Everything Is Illuminated) - it’s so subtle, yet so ironic and so powerful.
Chain of Fools. A quick Wiki search informed me that this was the last Mikey that Wood’s ever played. I haven’t watched this film so I can’t say anything about it.
Films in which Wood’s characters are American Jews:
Avalon. A little boy in an extensive Jewish family whose cultural heritage was slowly lost over generations.
Everything is Illuminated. Explained above.
Final words: To say he’s typecast is, well, not true at all, despite the fact that I do find some similarities in many of his characters. For the past 30 years this man has built up for himself an impressive career with lots and lots of diverse roles. I really enjoy his filmography for this reason, even though I can’t say I’m his fan. Thanks for reading this, hope you’re having an excellent day, and don’t forget to check out Over the Garden Wall during this spooky season!
