It's more common than you think. People are very wary and distrustful, and it's easy to buy into conspiracies when those theories are being perpetuated by people you consider educated and reputable. And especially if they're your boss. Quite a few of my medical field coworkers were antivax.
As a whole, though, my coworkers were incredibly superstitious. To some degree, I compare it to the level of superstition that professional athletes and sailors experience. But it's a whole new level listening to a surgeon explain how he got his surgery room Spotify playlist curated and blessed by his dog's psychic. That particular interaction lives rent free in my head to this day.
Whatever your position about the vax, I just want you to know that mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell
#i have no explanation#i dont remember what was on it specifically#but im pretty sure this one was his heavy metal playlist#which like#kudos to that dog psychic#but also#what#and thats just the beginning of my stories in this regard#also#different medical focuses#different superstitions#the superstitions of the orthopedics and the gastroenterologists are completely different flavors of zodiac shenanigans#i have learned so much#and yet at the same time#so little#lmao

Random FFXIV headcannon:
In Eorzea heterochromia is considered to be a sign that a child has a grand destiny of some kind. This is possibly why the adventurers guild has so many memebers with heterochromia.
#ffxiv#ffxiv randomness#it’s like a trivia superstition#everyone knows it but it doesn’t actually affect to much#red head has a thought#inspired by the number of WoLs with different colored eyes

hello hannah my beloved!!! i was wondering, do you have any thoughts on marriage/wedding costumes for the different regions? embroidery, colours, etc? we have the cloak of course, but would dorne follow this tradition too, considering it's so hot, would they use sheer material? does the bedding ceremony (and subsequent tearing of the dress...eugh) affect the choice of dress? kisses my wonderful friend from the puter 🫶
Ur in luck my dearest wife bc I’ve done a few wedding posts here and here and here already
Colors as symbols is Very Important to me. Black in Dorne bc in ancient Egypt black was a good and lucky color, used to represent fertility in such a dry arid place. Green often used in the north as another sign of spring and fertility. Riverlanders using multiple natural dyes in their dresses bc representative of blooming flowers :) Gold used by the upper classes so they can look more like they were blessed by the Maiden. White is fine for purity symbolism but I hate hate hate all white wedding dresses in medieval fantasy bc They Would Not Wear That Shit
Girls from all over the country probably embroider their dresses with their mothers and sisters and aunts and grandmothers. Every woman lends a hand in the coming of age of another. Maybe in the north the family matriarch gives them basically a Rushynk to wear around their neck during the wedding for happiness and protection. Many many traditions of being gifted something by your mother or elder sister or other female family member to have during the wedding and bring with you to your new home as a symbol of having a lifeline back to your family
#asoiaf hair and clothing#asoiaf#could talk ab weddings all day but I will need to make like a masterpost with twelve different sections and thirty different subsections#half of which are on the use of traditions and superstitions in weddings#the other half about color symbolism

Reasons I want to write a version of Jane Eyre that ends with Jane becoming a nun
She's used to living in an all-female community with basic attire
She has academic and artistic interests
She's religious
She needs a better religion than whatever Helen Burns had going on
She wouldn't have to marry Rochester
It would piss off Charlotte Bronte
#jane-u-eyre-y#jane eyre#charlotte bronte#i read the bit about jane's cousin who became a nun and just...wow#she's clearly got zero idea of what catholicism or religious life actually is#it's kind of hilarious#a supposedly christian story has more sympathy for actual magical superstition#than for the idea of a life of prayer#i suppose this is a good time to mention that charlotte and i are not kindred spirits#this is the most obvious example#but there's an overall sense that this book takes place in a mind#that's turned like 30 degrees from the direction my mind goes in#everything's just kind of off-kilter and i can't quite wrap my head around it#it reminds me a bit of the experience with girl of the limberlost#only not as bad in this case#that book sat in the uncanny valley#i can't decide if this one feels less unsettling because it's weirder or not as weird#it's weird in a different way

Culture - for the second day of @hetalia-rarepairweek ✨
I have recently been told about the British superstition of magpies and how of saluting magpies will ward off bad luck. The saluting is to show respect to the bird often connected with bad omens so that nothing bad will happen to you 🍂
#hetalia#rarepairweek2023#hetalia-rarepairweek#scotnor#aph norway#aph scotland#hws norway#hws scotland#this should perhaps have been under day 4 with folklore??? but it fit okay with today as well ig#felt like playing around with colours and the autumn vibes going on atm 🥰🥰#the magpies were surprisingly fun to draw - I usually suck at drawing animals but birds are okay#So fun how different countries will have these kind of superstitions that are so specific and other countries won't have heard about#I wonder what things we do in Norway that's Norway-specific 🤔🤔#I need to read up on all my books about superstitions and folklore 😅😅 this is def the season for it

some men are textbook villains fr
#tw religion?#kinda need to rant.. kinda wanna explain what's going on#some ppl are part of humanity but don't know how to be humane... like the guy i started talking to almost 2 weeks ago#liked him a lot bc he was funny sickeningly sweet mature and understanding.. until he was not#tl dr version is that we somehow drifted to the topic religion and i told him im not too religious and don't believe in superstition much#i was extremely respectful and even when he said that he does believe a lot i was like 'thats cool!! different people believe in different#things!!' and at first it was a normal convo until man went all psycho on me (after one damn week!!!) and started talking about how#id have to be religious in a relationship with him.. my dude i barely know your fav food can we not talk about relationships yet#but he says he doesn't even need a woman who cooks/cleans just someone who believes.. n im like i get it but i can't change myself like that#and then guy moves to marriage and is all 'well my entire family is religious' n my mom and sister (who's 16) would be putting pressure on#you n force you to pray etc.. and I'm like???? who can force anyone to a thing like that are u kidding#things escalate and my absolute STUPID ass tells him about my deepest fkn trauma to explain what made me abandon religion bc#life just never got better and this trauma remained for yrs... and he gets so angry that he says he wants to stop talking to me just to spam#me all day next day.. he'd keep messaging me switching between 'i still want you we shouldn't throw this away i have feelings for you'#AFTER A WEEEEEEKKKK!!! and then goes back to 'i wasted my time with you you were so unnecessary im in a bad mood bc of you'#even said 'you'll never find a guy with a trauma and mindset like this. i will find a religious girl but no one will love you like that'#and the worst thing is that he told his friends and mom about the trauma i had just to spite me.. note that he promised to never tell anyone#(and then still asked for forgiveness and for me to rethink whether we want to end this after telling me 473626x he wanted to end it)#(nothing even ever started you bitchass)#also note that his mom knows my mom n basically most of my relatives.. so i was here trembling for days fearing they'd get to know about it#mom somehow convinced her to not tell anyone bc it's important to me and very very fucking personal..#but he harassed me all day - i wouldn't answer and he'd send 55 messages.. multiple missed calls like dude i got so fkn scared#my heart jumped whenever he texted he was so fkn aggressive and SO MEAN#'you just needed to adjust and we would've been okay' 'tell me are u gonna fkn be religious or not????' 'you ruined everything' kinda mean#i just :') it was the worst time and i don't think i've ever seen someone degrade me so much or make me feel this defective#but.. it's finally over. his mom called my mom and mine was like pls teach him some manners.. n since i couldn't and wouldn't text him back#and literally avoided whatsapp bc of him she ended it all for me and now it's hopefully done forever#anyway i saw jks gcf performance yday n him singing still with you put a genuine smile on my face.. ill stick to THAT boyfriend honestly lol#def gonna delete later#but ty for reading if u did <3

alright y'all i want your thoughts. do we think Hermie is superstitious??? because i could see it going either way. on the one hand, with how seriously he takes theater, its VERY funny to picture some unaware freshman mentioning Macbeth and then getting side tackled by this scrawny ass joker bucko, but on the other hand, we know how dedicated to scams he is. part of me thinks he would find some hidden spot with good acoustics and just start whistling and slowly drive everyone wild
#i NEED to know what the venn diagram of Hermie enjoyers and current/former theater people is#also i wanna know what weird superstition rules different productions have#my high school theater teacher used to make* kids run around the building (its not very big) if they whistled in the theater#*not like actually MADE them but shed tell them to and they usually did#we also knocked on wood a lot#i was the little asshole who would walk up to a friend during a performance and whisper “Macbeth” into their ear#because i think that's stupid but also i knew people would get actually genuinely angry at me if they knew i said it#anyway. hs theater is WILD#dndads#dndads s2#hermie the unworthy#hermposting

sorry for coming off as passive aggressive with that recent ask wrt the asian aspects (i'm mostly lighthearted but to be honest i am a little tired though), but,, yeah idk how to put this in words, especially for something that literally originated from art specifically made between two asian people who "get it", to people who aren't asian LMAO
asian superstition like ancestral spirits, hungry ghosts, urban legends, etc, even if you don't believe in them, can have more Acknowledgement and Presence in some asian people's daily lives, like festivals like lunar new years or mid-autumn festival being celebrated, attending a funeral even if you don't believe in ghosts, things like avoiding walking under ladders out of habit even if you don't believe in superstitions, etc!
superstitions and acknowledging spirits (especially ancestral spirits and hungry ghosts) rooted from asian mythology/superstition are just... a part of life? it's something we're accustomed to and thus why i and my friend joked w asian ghost veneration stuff. if this analogy makes sense, being rude to asian people demanding we explain why we’re making jokes about asian superstition is like being rude to someone drawing something as contemporary and common as a coffee shop au bc you personally aren't from a culture/area/etc with coffee shops LMAO
#THERE'S A REASON I SPECIFICALLY DREW GHOSTLY WISPS (A COMMON ASIAN DEPICTION AND SYMBOL OF SPIRITS) LIKE LMAO#i don't know if i'm conveying what i mean properly but like. yeah it's just cultural differences between us but please don't be rude y'know#i'm more than happy to ramble about superstitions esp being both asian and living in western society that treat ghosts differently but... h#text

#saw a reel where this woman was trying on dresses to wear to a wedding#and she had a red one and said she couldn't wear it bc of this which i had NEVER heard before#and then one of the dresses was black??? which i thought was a common wedding superstition#also my friend used to work in a clothing shop and she told me abt serving americans who were shopping for a wedding#and the woman bought a black dress for it? so i guess it's not a universal superstition#anyway am interested what the superstitions are in other countries bc i bet there are different ones everywhere#🧃#polls#pinkie's polls

Oddworld species idea: creature whose mothers lay their eggs among Mudokon egg clutches like how Cuckoos and other parasitic birds lay thier eggs in bird nests. the young superficially resemble Mudokons in their baby/adolescent/teenage stage until adulthood where they metamorphisize into a far larger, stronger and more messed up looking creature.
#oddworld#mudokon#mudokons#cuckoo bird#birds#Oddworld fan species#I imagine they’d be more common in native mudokon tribes#industrial societies would probably dismiss the existence of them as tribal superstition#…until a slig guard or two notices one of thier mudokon slaves acting off… maybe even looking a bit different…#until they learn the hard way not to dismiss “tribal superstition far too late.

In Ruyak's old community, did they have any superstitions?
There's a blurry line between superstition and good practice. For example, Kanai don't have much knowledge of insect varieties or their purposes, but they're very aware that trees and plants can suffer from blights under certain management practices, and that having a variety of flowering/fruiting plants makes for a healthier forest. They don't know what pollinators are, which insects make honey, which insects decompose wood and detritus, or which insects bite. But they do know that certain plants attract insects for some reason, and others repel them, and that harvests are better when insect activity is at a certain balance.
So I'd say that given that, they have MANY superstitions, but they tend to be rooted in experience. It might seem silly for Kanai to have rules about not treading on the north side of a fen grove in spring (killing insect larva), not getting one's feet dusty in fall (fungi spores), or not eating carnivores without cooking them (parasites), but it all makes sense if you think about it.
#kanai#superstitions#if you are real big and can't see bugs but know they're there#that's a lot like us not seeing bacteria n stuff#and I'm a firm believer that a lot of superstitions come from experiences with microbes or chemistry#what's the difference between an evil spirit and a staph infection?#it may only be a difference in name#ask

got curious and looked at the MILGRAM # on twitter. sorted by latest. worst mistake of my life 💀💀
#curiosity killed the cat am i right (is that a motherfricking milgram reference)#it's just. full of people proudly saying ''i voted on this project (that i don't care about) because of a superstition 🥰🥰''#''yeah there are people that might care about this project. but not me!! i just want free tickets to see my fav idols 🥰🥰''#''found a coin on the street today. TOTALLY related to voting on this random project 🥰🥰''#like. come on. this whole ''unforgiving shrine'' is just absurd.#people voting unforgiven with 5-6 different accounts and linking it to every single good thing happening in their lives.#it's just. unfair. to everyone that cares about this project.#fans voting innocent are simply outmatched by this whole insanity#and fans that care about milgram voting guilty for personal theories got their votes tainted and invalidated by this mess.#and it's like. getting worse. the guilty votes are getting faster. both for kazui AND mahiru.#at this point we should just create 50 twitter burner accounts each and start voting forgiven. at least it would balance out the voting.#i'm really hoping this is just temporary and these assholes will just leave the fandom in peace soon#but if this continues until amane's voting starts i'll get kind of worried for future votes.#i was planning on voting amane guilty but if this whole unforgiving shrine continues i'll just vote her inno#because i simply will not be able to vote her guilty with a clear mind while she is being bombarded with guilty votes for NOTHING.#i don't want my votes being summed up with empty meaningless tainted votes.#looking on the bright side. if they stop this mess soon we can still balance the vote out. his voting only ends in october after all.#anyways. can't have shit in detroit am i right. not main tagging because this post is kind of bitter.

Love seeing an argument on my dash where both sides are kinda stupid
#one side: animism is the belief that everything is alive which is true because of microscopic life#the other side: nature like rocks and shit arent alive and animism is dumb superstition#like. neither of yall really understand it lmao#for one yea its an umbrella term for a variety of beliefs with a similar respect for the natural world#my understanding of it is that its just about respect. its about the definition of 'person' and its about your worldview#do i think if i talk to a creek or a rock it can understand and talk back? no not really!#but i believe that the creek is an important part of the community that is this land#and it deserves the respect and care that i would afford a human neighbor#like its literally just a different worldview that isnt any less correct than western science#its defining things by relationships rather than distinctions#yes animism is often tied into spiritual beliefs. but it doesnt have to be#i never say im religious and im hesitant to say im spiritual sometimes i literally just have a worldview thats different than#the common culturally christian one.#i didnt even read the whole post im tired of this persons unnecessarily longwinded shit haha#anyway read braiding sweetgrass mwah

#'you meddled and our gods disappeared'#theres something fun abt the doctor being so like......antitheist? is that a word?#'the philosophical position that theism should be opposed' or in secular contexts 'direct opposition to belief in any deity'#so yes antitheistic tendencies#like even just now in the last couple of pages 11 was being disdainful of these peoples 'superstitions'#the doctor kinda consistently does not believe in any gods or devils right?#13 is a bit different with this in that at least she feels like she does at least respect what believing in gods can do or mean for people?#previous doctors can be so condescending#but 13 is nicer kinda in general abt all kinds of things in this way i think#shes less condescending in general to just regular people#but still i think she would be a good opportunity to like dig into that a bit more?#having a muslim companion#we dont even know what yazs relationship with islam even is i feel like we should#13s era is so full of missed opportunities it's a shame#it would be fun to explore religion as a theme more in her era#especially bc it IS there and it does interact with the empire theme#anyway
