Follower Recs
Stories I haven’t read yet, but clearly need to put on my ever-expanding List.
~*~
Welcome back queen [Thank you, it’s so lovely to be back!] if ur still doing follower recs I gotta recommend I would wait for a thousand years by bleuett it’s soooooooo good
[This one was actually recced to me by two different people, the other of whom said, “ Maybe I'm crying a little so I feel like a should recommend ‘I would wait for a thousand years’ by bleuett on ao3.”]... it’s def. on my List!
I would wait for a thousand years
by bleuett (T, 10k, wangxian)
Summary: During the worst of winter, a traveler comes to stay at Lan Wangji's inn. He wears a red ribbon in his hair.
“Do you see the rabbit?” Wei Ying asks and points at the moon. “That’s the moon rabbit, he helps make Chang’e more immortality elixir. He keeps Chang’e company.”
“I do not wish the rabbit for company,” Lan Wangji says tightly. “You are the one I want by my side.”
“And I’m here, Lan Zhan. If you go to the moon, I’ll follow you, I’ll always be here now.”

I just read a great fic by aisthuu "every love story is a ghost story", didn't see it in your recs so wanted to recommend it! LWJ is a guqin composer and teacher, buys a cheap guqin off eBay which ends up being attached to WWX's spirit from canon era. It's bittersweet, LWJ deals with Lan's homophobia (implicit in a Lan way) and his feelings towards the ghost. This is author's only ao3 fic and honestly I don't remember how I stumbled upon it, but I'm happy I did and hope you will enjoy it too! [I’ve recently read this one, and loved it!]
every love story is a ghost story
by aisthuu (M, 59k, wangxian, my bookmark)
Summary: The man is in Lan Zhan’s bed. Did they—he begins to wonder, eyes trailing to where the man’s body lies under the blanket. Had Lan Zhan—?
Then the sleep-fog clears and Lan Zhan realizes that the young man isn’t quite opaque around the edges.
“You’re a spirit.”
The spirit narrows its eyes. “I’m so much more than that.”
(Lan Zhan buys a guqin off eBay for a suspiciously low price, only to find that it’s haunted. And now there’s a ghost in his bed.)

Ok so I absolutely have to rec "see you yesterday" by glyphic. It's a wip, but it's currently at 101k so there's a whole lot there, and it's terrible and wonderful and beautiful all at once. The way the backstory of canon events is adapted to the modern-with-cultivation setting is brilliant, and then there's the amnesia, and then there's the time loop. This fic lives permanently rent-free in my brain.
see you yesterday
by glyphic (M, 101k, wangxian, WIP)
Summary:
Wei Ying 21:09 hey lan zhan what’s the weirdest way youve died
Lan Zhan 21:11 Falling encyclopedias.
Wei Ying 21:12 omg no way that’s so rude turning books against you???
Lan Zhan 21:13 A betrayal I will never forget.
On Halloween night, an exiled demonic cultivator and a Lan disciple get stuck in a time-loop, find each other, and try to figure it all out.

If you are looking for recs for yourself I absolutely love (the complete!) story Just as the Snow Melts by draechali on AO3. It's a canon divergence where everyone lives, even WWX! ~ @airmidcelt
Just as the Snow Melts
by draechaeli (T, 67k, wangxian)
Summary: Like a snowy mountain top in spring the residents of the Burial Mounds trickled down the mountain and joined the flow of society.
“I went to the Burial Mounds,” Lan WangJi said.
“Ah, yeah… I’m sorry Lan Zhan,” replied Wei WuXian, “I hadn’t thought anyone would come to visit. I am still not sure how it happened; I brought A-Yuan to Yiling to play by the river and then ended up somehow teaching a bunch of children swimming and writing along with him.”

Hello! It's come to my attention that you have not as yet read Grandmaster of Meme-onic Cultivation! Please do! It's the only thing that gave me joy during 2020 😆 like proper belly laughs and disney villain style cackling. It is a wip, and it is long but so so worth it!! The author has reworked the entire canon through these message crystals and still conveys complex characters despite the tricky format. It's just so good!! Highly highly recommend it! ❤ ~ @theladypeartree [Oh! I’ve been subscribed to this one, and know that @swaglexander-the-great is a reliable provider of Hilarity, so I’m excited for it to be finished!]
Grandmaster of Meme-onic Cultivation
by Hades_the_Blingking (T, 49k, wangxian, WIP)
Summary: The Untamed universe is exactly the same, except everybody has magical crystals that have a suspiciously familiar messaging system. The story is pretty much the same as the show, except everyone lives!! (so minor changes).
or in which Wei WuXian tries his darndest to date Lan Zhan, Jiang Cheng possibly has a aneurysm, Jin ZiXuan is still the most awkward human alive, and Xue Yang makes me write some VERY cursed things. Written in chatfic format! :3

Chomrafy on AO3 deserves love and encouragement; she’s written a body of compact, poetic, and eloquent shortfics each of which can stand alone, but that comprise an intricately cross-referential and mostly internally-consistent universe. They’re grouped as chapters in works according to theme; for example, “in cupped hands” focuses upon Jin Ling and his second-generation baggage; “Departure in Autumn” portrays the last years of WWX’s first life. Follow the tag “Chomrafy’s MDZS shortfics.” [I don’t see this tag?]
in cupped hands
by chomrafy (G, 2k, wangxian)
Summary: Of secrets, of futures, of love. A Jin Ling-centric collection of 200-word fics.
Ch.1: Jin Ling repays a debt (JL, JC, & WWX). Ch.2: Jin Ling and a ghost in the mirror. (JL & JYL) Ch.3: A matter of friends (JL & the other kids) Ch.4: In this house we don't keep dogs (JC & WWX) Ch.5: In the end, he remains silent (JL & uncles) Ch.6: A first night hunt, of sorts (JL & the other kids) Ch.7: Jin Ling, forgiving, forgetting (JL & LXC & JGY) Ch.8: Jiang Cheng and Jin Ling argue (JL, JC, & WWX) Ch.9: Jin Ling and his father (JL & JC) Ch.10: Jin Ling speaks up (JL, JC, & WWX) Ch.11: Jin Ling and a piece of home (JL, JC, & WWX)
Departure in Autumn
by chomrafy (not rated, 6k)
Summary: Four perspectives. A steady march to the end.
Ch.1: Because if anything happens to them, Wen Qing would never be able to heal with these hands again. Ch.2: As long as this is still home, Jiang Yanli will wait as long as she needs to. Ch.3: Five times Jiang Cheng reaches for Wei Wuxian, one time he turns away. Ch.4: Whether the road is broad or narrow, bright or dark, they would have to keep walking. Wei Wuxian digs Wen Qing's grave.

Hello, hope all is going well. I don't have an ask, by I do have a recommendation. I read this fic a while ago and found it again. I just wanted to recommend this for everyone. Let me know what you think please. Thank you. [Oh! This one’s in my To Read list, but I’d forgotten about it. Mmmm, fox!wwx and dragon!lwj.]
Ten miles of Lotus Flowers
by Yukirin_Snow
M, 274k, wangxian
Summary: He was a mischievous fox spirit, wreaking havoc where he went, about to depart on a journey that would span centuries.
He was a heavenly prince, a proud dragon destined to ascend the throne to become emperor.
Neither expected their paths to collide over the span of three lives.

I forgot if it was your blog 😥 that recommended “Bestseller” (when Wei Wuxian writes the Xianxia cut-sleeve equivalent of Fifty Shades of Grey, based entirely on his experiences with Lan Wangji, he doesn’t expect it to become the next big hit) (https://archiveofourown.org/works/21528316/chapters/51318766)
But OMG IT WAS HILARIOUS!!! I LOVED IT!! And if it wasn’t your blog, I’m so sorry for how weird this sounds 😭😭😭😭 I just loved this fic so much that I have to tell it to someone 😢 [It’s on my List, but I haven’t read it yet!]
Bestseller
by pupeez4eva
M, 8k, wangxian
Summary: He had written the book to prove a point. It was never supposed to be a big thing, and he certainly never intended for everyone — Jiang Cheng, Zewu-Jun, the Juniors, literally everyone— to be reading about his sex life.
Oh God, he definitely needed to make sure Lan Zhan didn’t find out about this.
(Or, when Wei Wuxian writes the Xianxia cut-sleeve equivalent of Fifty Shades of Grey, based entirely on his experiences with Lan Wangji, he doesn’t expect it to become the next big hit).

I’d like to rec On Your Marks, Get Set, Bake! by @blackwiresgrowonherhead
It’s one of my absolute favorites and I laughed out loud so many times when reading it
on your marks, get set, bake!
by BlackWiresOnHerHead
G, 41k, wei wuxian & juniors
Summary: Jin Ling resumes thumping on the door to room 721, and the small collection of freshmen starts chanting “Senior Wei! Senior Wei! Senior Wei!” with increasing volume until finally Wei Wuxian opens the door.
“Yes?” he says with his widest, most innocent eyes.
“Senior Wei!” demands Lan Jingyi, shoving himself to the front of the group. “Why didn’t you tell us you’re a contestant on this year’s season of The Great Gusu Bake Off?!?”
--
Several months ago, college student Wei Wuxian secretly competed in the most popular reality show in the country. The show starts airing in the fall. The freshmen in his dorm collectively lose their minds.

If you're in the mood for v. short ridiculous fun fic, may I suggest My chain hits my chest/When I'm bangin' on the radio by x_los It's 2k modern cultivators AU, featuring WWX calling LWJ's sword Bitchin' [omg I’m laughing so hard] and I think it's more fun going in blind?
My chain hits my chest/When I'm bangin' on the radio
by x_los
T, 2k, wangxian
Summary: Lan Wangji finds he doesn't even need to call for help for Wei Wuxian to come running.

May I please request more Qin Su WWX?
A WangXian confession scene maybe?
JC seeing The Peacock again?
Either way, thank you for accepting prompts!!
anon: Ohhh you’re accepting prompts for QS!WWX? What about some bonding time between wei Wuxian and Jin Zixuan? How do they first find each other? They’re technically half siblings now aren’t they? Also, does wei wuxian have any trouble adjusting to now being a woman?(once he’s out of the pit of vipers that is koi tower and can relax a bit more)
(tw: mentioned self-harm/suicide under the cut)
__
I love you, Lan Zhan had told him, under the influence of a single cup of baijiu and what seemed like deep, unending torment concealed for nearly a lifetime. I love you so dearly I cannot bear to part from you.
I love you, I want you. My heart nearly died without you, my darling, please--
Of all the women that could have summoned Wei Wuxian, it had to be the one that Lan Zhan has apparently been in love with for over sixteen years.
And of all the people Wei Wuxian could have fallen in love with himself, it had to be Lan Zhan.
How unlucky can the both of them get?
“That’s rough,” Jin Zixuan offers lamely, having been party to Lan Zhan’s poor, heart-broken vow of love when the drink corroded his restraint and made him forget that the one in Qin Su’s body is no longer the late Jin-furen at all. “That--I mean, I knew Qin Su while I was growing up, and I saw Hanguang-jun now and then, but I never once dreamed that he...with her...”
“I don’t think she felt the same,” Wei Wuxian says, his voice echoing through the guest room like a death knell as he watches Lan Zhan toss and turn on the bed. “She was the one who pursued Lianfang-zun, wasn’t she? Qin Su loved Jin Guangyao. She wouldn’t have summoned me if she hadn’t.”
“It must be hard for Hanguang-jun,” his brother-in-law sighs. “Maybe--maybe you can do something to look a little less like her?”
“I already tried that,” Wei Wuxian points out. Qin Su was a well-known figure throughout the cultivation world, and her features were both unique and striking in their beauty; in order to travel freely through the country with Lan Zhan and Jin Zixuan, Wei Wuxian had shaved off half of his eyebrows, stood in the sun for hours each day to darken his face and arms, smeared a coating of tan-coloured makeup around his mouth to make his lips look smaller, and enlisted a very reluctant Jin Zixuan to help bind his chest as flat as possible without suffocating himself. He’s also lost weight from all the walking and horseback riding, sharpening the bones of his jaw while also giving him muscles in places Qin Su never had them--and as a result, he looks very different from the sheltered Laoling rose (as the young Qin Su was often called) who spent her whole life resting in the lap of luxury.
Lan Zhan must really have cared for Qin Su, if he can look her in the eyes now and still see the woman loved through Wei Wuxian’s alterations.
“Here’s what we’ll do,” Jin Zixuan says presently. “Tomorrow, you’ll ride with me instead of Hanguang-jun, and we’ll tell him it’s to spare his horse because he’s heavier than I am. And the next time we stop at an in, we’ll get two rooms instead of one--one for you, and I’ll share the second one with Hanguang-jun. Or we could just get three.”
Wei Wuxian gives a dismal nod and draws his knees up under his chin.
“I hurt Lan Zhan so much during my first life,” he whispers. “And when I came back, the first thing I did was hurt him all over again.”
“Ah--at least it’s not really your fault? You didn’t force Qin Su to summon you.”
“That doesn’t change the fact that Lan Zhan’s heart is broken. He’s so serious, Peacock, and he feels things so strongly--”
“Can you stop calling me that?”
“Maybe when you stop acting like one! And anyway, he--”
“I blame myself for A-Li dying.”
Wei Wuxian blinks. “What?”
“If I hadn’t listened to Jin Guangyao and gone out to Qiongqi Way, Yanli wouldn’t have died,” Jin Zixuan elaborates. “You wouldn’t have died, and none of the Wens would have been murdered. Wen Qing wouldn’t have cut her own throat to stop my father from touching her. There would never have been a siege at Bu Ye Tian, and A-Li would never have gone running after you, and A-Ling would never have been orphaned. You keep saying all of this was your fault, but if I could just go back to the day of A-Ling’s full-moon party and stay at the Jinlintai, I...”
He swallows.
“I’d do anything to change that one day, you know. Anything.”
“But you died, too.”
“It was quick,” shrugs Jin Zixuan. “It didn’t really feel like much. I think I went into shock as soon as it happened, and then I was dead.”
They sit in silence together for a while after that, gazing out into the chilly night and drawing the blankets closer around their shoulders when it starts to snow.
“We’d better get to bed,” Wei Wuxian says at last. “Lan Zhan will be up at five, and then we’ll have to get up, too.”
Mercifully, Jin Zixuan just nods and pushes Lan Zhan over so he can sleep beside him.
“Good night, Peacock,” Wei Wuxian yawns, sliding under the covers of the second bed. “If Lan Zhan tries to hug you, don’t let him. He’ll get embarrassed when he wakes up.”
Jin Zixuan just rolls his eyes. “Good night.”

Wangxian Fic Recs
Hi! In the mo dao zushi/ untamed/ grandmaster of demonic cultivation there is one character I love above all! Yes, as you guessed from the picture, it is Lan Wangji/ Lan Zhan!
If you are a fan hoping to read more fics that is more LWJ centric (but in wangxian form) then you have come to the right place! I present to you my fave fic recs!
But there are fics here that might be more WWX centric but I love how LWJ is portrayed in these fics so I’m including those too either way. So here we go!
These fics are old ones. I’m starting with ten then I’m going to post more maybe tomorrow. Some of my absolute, super fave fics have not yet been written into this post so please look forward to those in the future!
--
carefully adjusted are the rabbit nets by ectocosme
one-shot
(Let us start this list off with something adorable! LWJ and RABBITS who doesn’t love this combination? WWX is messing about with the rules as usual when he witnesses the cutest scene! The stoic LWJ is talking quietly with rabbits! Seeing the other’s fondness for the cute fluffy animals, WWX makes a plan that would maybe endear LWJ to him)
Six Centimeters by Keysmashed
two-shot
(All of WWX robes fit perfectly, ever wondered why? Perfectly fitting clothes is just another sign of our beloved hanguang-jun’s devotion. A domestic, fluffy fic that made my heart shiver in both sadness and fondness. A nice two shot to cleanse the soul.)
speaking with the speech of men by ectocosme
four chapters
(LWJ is confused by WWX’s actions. Is he teasing him or flirting with him? He can’t tell and he is afraid to get it wrong because he knows what heartbreak feels like. He goes out and seeks the advice of his brother and cousin. This is a really sweet four shot that features protective!wwx, supportive but protective!LXC and their OC cousin, and one ex-crush of LWJ who is a jerk and gets what’s coming to him- courtesy of the protective!WWX)
two guys r in love that’s literally it by victortor
one-shot
(A time travel fix it which features a confused LWJ who is fascinated with the prodigious Jiang sect senior disciple, WWX. WWX flirts with him and sees right through him and LWJ can’t help but be drawn in by this mysterious disciple who seems to have been through so much despite being so young. A sweet, sad story with a happy ending)
Adventures in Solitude by etymologyplayground
one-shot
(I really love how etymologyplayground write Lan Wangji in his/her/their fics. He is a little sad and softer, it makes me want to wrap him up in a blanket and never let him go! This fic is set on episode 16 of the untamed. A what-if fic where Lan Zhan finds the Jiang trio mere moments after they escaped the siege of the YungmengJiang. LWJ is the best supportive and caring person ever, and the interactions between the wangxian couple will just melt your heart. I wish it really did happen this way, a short reprieve before the tragedies about to come. Mostly focused on the two’s relationship. Have a read! You wont regret it!)
Threaded Together Series by Aki_no_hikari
currently has three fics, ongoing
(Featuring our favorite wangxian couple and the legend of the red thread. These two adorable boys are connected by a red thread. Join these two in their adorable shennanigans, a shy LWJ and a mischievous WWX trying to get LWJ to kiss him. Kisses treated as bribery! So much fluff and sweetness, though warning for the third fic, there is angst. Overall absolutely lovely!)
Lan WangJi takes a sick day by firesonic152
one-shot
(Good sick and hurt Lan Wangji fics are like rare gems you did not expect to find. I have read lots of LWJ taking care of WWX but I would love it too of someone takes care of LWJ. In this WWX wakes up to LWJ on the ground unable to move because of how bad he was feeling. Cue WWX doing his best to look after his beloved husband and there is even a special appearance by the Lan juniors! Look forward to a domestic, fluffy one-shot with a sprinkle of hurt. Absolutely love love this. And i have reread it so many times!)
Gratitude by Suspicious_Popsicle
one-shot
(Appropriately titled. Gratitude is a sweet fic that features a strange creature WWX finds hopping about. LWJ won’t tell him what it is but that has never stopped our favorite gremlin before. What he finds is something unexpected and sad, however is grateful nevertheless for how things turned out. [I’m grateful too to the two mvps T.T you’ll find out what I mean if you read it] This features an injured LWJ and a bit of look into the past. Truly a wonderful fic!)
from such spring colors by wolframvonbielefeld (maknaeline)
one-shot
(This is a bit more WWX Wuxian centric but I just love jealous!WWX fics because there are too many jealous!LWJ ones hahaha. My reaction when I read this: I love them so much these two idiots *cries into a handkerchief* Just wow, a unique take on obliviousness, this fic is centered around the concept of the hahaki disease- is a fictional disease where the victim of unrequited or one-sided love begins to vomit or cough up the petals and flowers. Except in this fic, hahaki disease is a gift. It is sort of a fix it as well, where our second favorite couple yanli and zixuan are alive and the wens go on to live in Cloud Recesses. Features pining, misunderstandings, flowers, and a truly oblivious WWX. The last two scenes were the best part !!!)
When fish soar by mondengel
one-shot
(a short fluffy fic which is more on JC’s POV. I love how both WWX and LWJ are both mythical creatures trying to hide who they are but are sort of aware of each other’s existence. Sweet and fluffy and deep in my heart I wish this was long because I have so many questions but it good as it is too!)
--
So we will end it like this for now, ten fic recs for the moment. I will have another ten up tomorrow! I have so many of them trust me xD These are old fics, because I started from the beginning but if you want I can start giving recs for more recent ones. So yeah, this is just the start! Tell me if you find these great and let me know what you think of them! Thank you!

If you ever feel like it, I would love to see a fic for the scenario where wwx and jyl call jc after a family dinner only to find out that their parents didn't invite him. I loved all your bad parents + jc fics! My favourite so far was the mingxicheng one, where madame yu made jc leave them for 3yrs! And the series where lxc saves jc from zidian and takes him to cloud recesses has a special place in my heart (first cql fic ive ever read!)
BeeTober 2020 Day 15
Spite - Golden
Day 15 of BeeTober 2020 finally gives me an excuse to finish this wip that has been laying around for far too long now. Have some family feels between these three siblings!
Jiang Cheng is enjoying a rare, quiet evening at home, when his phone rings.
He put it on the table when he swaddled himself in a blanket, and it’s biting him in the ass now, because he not only has to unwrap himself, but he also has to stretch uncomfortably to reach the phone.
When he half slides off the couch in the process, Jiang Cheng figures it would have been easier to simply stand up, but by then the phone is in his hands.
Nuisance it says, and Jiang Cheng groans into the couch.
He was having a calm evening. He does not want to talk to Wei Wuxian, who will upend Jiang Cheng’s tranquillity.
Jiang Cheng is still debating weather he should mute his phone or not, when it suddenly lights up again, but this time it says A-jie.
There is no way in hell that Jiang Cheng wouldn’t pick up when Jiang Yanli is calling but seeing her name on the phone so shortly after Wei Wuxian’s makes Jiang Cheng panic.
“Is everyone alright?” Jiang Cheng asks as soon as he accepted the call and when Wei Wuxian huffs at the other end of the line, Jiang Cheng feels betrayed.
“So you have time to answer shi-jie, but not me?” Wei Wuxian asks and Jiang Cheng rolls his eyes.
“You know I love her more,” he gives back, laughing at Wei Wuxian’s indignant squeak. “What do you want?” Jiang Cheng asks once Wei Wuxian calmed down and he feels slightly betrayed when he realizes that his siblings are together and didn’t even ask him to join them.
Jiang Cheng tries to push that thought away, because they are allowed to spend time together without him—of course they are—but Jiang Cheng has a hard time fighting his insecurities.
“What are you doing?” Wei Wuxian asks and Jiang Cheng looks down at his blanket.
“Nothing?” he asks, because he doesn’t think it warrants being said that he is a slob tonight.
There is a very icy silence from Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng frowns.
“Why?” Jiang Cheng carefully asks, already on the defense.
“What do you mean ‘nothing’?” Wei Wuxian snaps and Jiang Cheng shrugs, even though Wei Wuxian can’t see him.
“I mean, I’m on the couch, about to start my second movie?” Jiang Cheng unsurely gives back.
“You stupid asshole,” Wei Wuxian seethes and before Jiang Cheng can react to that Wei Wuxian snaps out “Just stay where the fuck you are,” before he simply hangs up on Jiang Cheng.
Jiang Cheng is left to stare at his phone, wondering what that was all about, before he remembers that Jiang Yanli must have been with Wei Wuxian.
He clicks into his conversation with her and quickly types out Is everything alright?
It doesn’t take her long to answer, but when Jiang Cheng gets the message, he feels as confused as before.
Yes. Stay where you are!
As if he was going to leave his blanket nest, Wei Wuxian’s mood be damned.
It takes them almost half an hour to get to Jiang Cheng’s apartment, and when they ring, Jiang Cheng stays on the couch.
They are being cryptic, and rude for no reason, and they interrupted Jiang Cheng’s relaxing evening; so just to spite them Jiang Cheng makes them search for their own keys instead of getting up and opening the door for them.
Jiang Cheng can hear Wei Wuxian curse before he even gets the door open, and Jiang Yanli’s calming murmur is not far behind, but still, Jiang Cheng is entirely unprepared for the way Wei Wuxian storms into his living-room.
“What the fuck,” Wei Wuxian says first thing when he sees Jiang Cheng all bundled up on the couch, and Jiang Cheng glares at him, because he told him that was what he was doing.
There really is no need to be this surprised by it.
“What?” Jiang Cheng asks, directing the question more to Jiang Yanli than Wei Wuxian, because she’s bound to be the more helpful one here, but Wei Wuxian steps between them.
“Have you been doing this all evening?” Wei Wuxian asks and his voice is so accusing that Jiang Cheng immediately bristles.
He’s allowed to take the evening off, thank you very much.
“Yes,” he bites out, not bothering to explain anything, as long as Wei Wuxian doesn’t tell him what has him worked up like that.
“And you think this was more important than coming to family dinner? Where Uncle Jiang announced that he’ll be stepping down soon? Really?” Wei Wuxian demands to know and Jiang Cheng goes ice cold all over.
“Family dinner,” Jiang Cheng repeats and he starts to tremble all over.
“Yes, for fucks sake. The one you couldn’t attend because you’re so ‘busy’,” Wei Wuxian bites out, but Jiang Yanli puts a calming hand to his arm.
“A-Cheng?” she asks, clearly picking up on Jiang Cheng’s mood, but Jiang Cheng is already untangling himself from his blanket.
“I need to be alone,” Jiang Cheng says, and he feels very removed from his own body.
He’s cold all over, and he thinks he’s still shaking faintly but he barely registers it. All he knows is that he needs to be alone right this moment.
So he gets up and walks past Wei Wuxian and Jiang Yanli without looking at them, and then he makes a beeline for his bedroom.
He feels like he’s frozen, rather than angry, and so he closes the door behind him with a soft click instead of throwing it shut and then he simply stands in the middle of his bedroom for a moment, before he walks over to the bed and crawls under the blanket there.
He pulls it up over his head, and then he simply stares into nothing.
A family dinner. Where his father made a very big announcement.
And Jiang Cheng wasn’t even invited.
That thought finally breaks through his shock and his eyes start to burn with tears.
He always knew that Wei Wuxian was his father’s golden boy and that Jiang Yanli would always be the most beloved by his parents, but to think that his parents didn’t even ask him to this family dinner cuts deeper than Jiang Cheng could have ever imagined.
Jiang Cheng curls up into a small ball and presses his face into the mattress, overly aware of the hot tears that slide out of his eyes.
When his door opens, Jiang Cheng startles. He forgot that Wei Wuxian and Jiang Yanli were still in his apartment and he wishes they would just leave him alone.
He doesn’t want them to see him fall apart.
“A-Cheng,” Jiang Yanli says, and her voice is soft and careful.
“Don’t fucking coddle him,” Wei Wuxian mutters, clearly still angry, but Jiang Yanli doesn’t pay him any attention.
“A-Cheng, did you not know about family dinner?” Jiang Yanli carefully asks and Jiang Cheng presses his eyes closed even harder than before.
“What?” Wei Wuxian gasps and Jiang Cheng can just imagine how he shakes his head. “But Uncle Jiang said Jiang Cheng couldn’t make it because he was busy!”
“A-Cheng?” Jiang Yanli carefully prods him again and Jiang Cheng feels how she sits down on the bed. “Did you know about it?”
“No,” Jiang Cheng croaks out and he hates how his voice breaks.
There’s a horrified gasp, most likely coming from Wei Wuxian, and Jiang Cheng curls up tighter.
“What do you mean ‘no’?” Wei Wuxian repeats and now the familiar anger bubbles up in Jiang Cheng.
He flings his blanket away as he sits up, not caring that the tears are still streaming down his face as he glares hard at Wei Wuxian.
“I mean that no one fucking told me about family dinner tonight,” he hisses out and he cannot stand to look at Jiang Yanli, because he can imagine the heart breaking look on her face and that is already bad enough.
“No one told you,” Wei Wuxian whispers, the disbelieve clear in his voice. “But Uncle Jiang said you couldn’t make it!”
“Right,” Jiang Cheng bitterly says. “And no one ever lies in this family,” he tacks on and looks down at his hands.
He’s still shaking, he notes, and that’s rather unfair, because shaking implies that he’s feeling something. But all Jiang Cheng can feel is a pitch black hole, right where his heart is supposed to be.
He knows that his parents don’t like him, knows that his father prefers Wei Wuxian and that his mother thinks him useless and worthless, but to have it thrown in his face like that still hurts more than Jiang Cheng could have ever imagined.
“We didn’t know,” Wei Wuxian says, just as Jiang Yanli pulls him into a hug.
Jiang Cheng doesn’t have the strength to fight her hands on him, and so he falls into her deceptively strong arms.
“It doesn’t matter,” Jiang Cheng mutters, because his parents were going to do whatever they fucking pleased.
“It does matter,” Jiang Yanli determinedly says and presses a kiss to Jiang Cheng’s head. “You’re family, and what they did was despicable.”
Jiang Cheng wants to cry and break down and agree, but all he does is ask “What were the big news again?”
“Uncle Jiang is stepping down soon,” Wei Wuxian says, just as he plasters himself to Jiang Cheng’s back. “He wants to announce the next CEO soon.”
Jiang Cheng huffs out a humourless laugh, because with how today went, you don’t need to be a genius to realize that it will not be Jiang Cheng’s name he announces to the world soon.
“Congratulations,” Jiang Cheng bitterly says and he feels how Wei Wuxian shakes his head.
“No. I won’t take that position. He never asked me, and it’s not right. I won’t do it.”
“Well, I won’t do it either,” Jiang Cheng gives back, because he has no intention of accepting that position as a second choice.
Either his father wants him to lead the company or he can go look for an heir elsewhere.
“Good,” Jiang Yanli says, and it’s so surprising that Jiang Cheng moves out of her arms.
“What?” he asks, because usually Jiang Yanli is the one to mediate between all of them, and to keep the peace in their family.
But going by the dark look on her face, she’s over that now.
“This will be the last dinner we attend with them,” she says and pulls Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian back into her arms. “I’m tired of seeing them fight, and of hurting you two. We’re not going back there.”
“It won’t be quite that easy,” Jiang Cheng says, because he knows his parents. They have ways to make their life hell, if they don’t do as they say.
“It will be. I will not allow them to hurt you further,” Jiang Yanli decides and Wei Wuxian is quick to agree.
“We’ll make our own family dinners,” he decides and puts an arm around Jiang Cheng as well. “Once a week, and we will never invite them.”
“Don’t be ridiculous,” Jiang Cheng chokes out, fighting with his tears again, but for completely different reasons now. “I don’t want to see you that often.”
“Hey,” Wei Wuxian yells and then topples them all over when he tries to tickle Jiang Cheng in retaliation.
Jiang Yanli moves out of the way, though she doesn’t do anything to stop them and simply watches on.
Wei Wuxian’s clever fingers find all of Jiang Cheng’s weak spots and soon enough he’s crying he’s laughing so hard and once the tears start, he can’t seem to stop, so it turns into pitiful sobs soon enough.
It seems like Jiang Yanli and Wei Wuxian simply waited for that, because they bracket him in on either side, and simply hold him while he cries and cries.
“We’re your family, A-Cheng,” Wei Wuxian whispers and Jiang Yanli presses a kiss to his head.
“And we don’t need them,” she agrees and Jiang Cheng clings desperately to both of them.
It still hurts, to know that his parents wouldn’t even think to ask him to come to a family dinner, but with his siblings at his side, it’s almost bearable.
“I love you,” Jiang Cheng chokes out when his sobs started to die down and Jiang Yanli and Wei Wuxian are quick to return the sentiment.
It’s not enough, not right now with the hurt so fresh, but Jiang Cheng knows that he can count on them, always.
And in a week he might also believe them when they say they love him, but right now he needs to wallow and be coddled.
And Jiang Yanli and Wei Wuxian seem more than ready to do whatever Jiang Cheng needs.

Episode 21 - The PTSD is strong with this one & we need more braincells
Hello hello! Welcome to the commentary. How’s everyone? I’m frozen solid because it’s mid-June in Spain and yet we had 11°C yesterday. Fucking awesome!
I AM NOT WEARING MASCARA SO I CAN CRY ALL I WANT. I DONT KNOW IF THATS GOOD OR BAD THO.
Can I just take a second to appreciate how much this big strong powerful men emote? I mean, I know this isn’t western media where the tough guy can’t show emotions, and I don’t know that eastern media has the same hangups about men emoting but just... it’s so refreshing.
Huaisang bb you’re so sweet.
Oh, oh the PTSD is strong with this one.
Also, bless both JC and NHS, they absolutely noticed WWX flinch and, in their own ways, went and steamrolled over it so WWX wouldn’t feel scrutinised.
WE INTERRUPT THIS BROADCAST TO INFORM YALL THAT I GOT A KITTEN ON MY LAP. (She’s kneading my boob, which, ow, but...)
*BICHEN GRIIIIIIIP*
How do y’all think the guards go deliver bad news to WRH? Like do they paper-rock-scissor it? Draw straws?
NMJ did you have to?
And once again I wonder what would’ve happened if JFM had let sect leader Yao kick it.
Ughvhfnevus it’s this clown. Same as with Su She, if you see a bunch of screaming it’s just me not wanting to listen to Jin ZiXun.
The Nies: let’s throw a banquet to honour WWX’s return
Every asshole there: *gossips about WWX while in the room with him*
Once again I wish I could transmigrate (and speak mandarin lol) and just start delivering tongue lashings.
Listen, I have no idea how to play Guqin, but I did play the guitar for years and even from here I can see how much YiBo’s hands don’t match the melody. Nothing against him but why does this always happen? I know they got classes, so was the music not written by that time or something? Because one thing is not hitting the correct notes, another is plucking slow notes when the tempo is much faster.
JC: Since yours and LWJ’s unhappy separation...
My dumbass: do you mean breakup? *eyebrow waggle*
You will pry my “JC knows his brother is pinning after LWJ, he probably doesn’t want to know anything else” hc out of my cold dead hands thankyouverymuch.
WWX: *spouts a bunch of misdirection to avoid giving JC a straight answer*
JC: Bull-fucking-shit.
Should I count how many times WWX PTSDs all over the place or would you like me to leave your hearts intact? That’s two so far.
Ok ok, I feel that, if someone with a bit less trauma and a bit of insight (NHS maybe?) had seen the bit where ChenQing fucking hurts Shijie thing would’ve gone differently. I mean, yes, LWJ keeps warning WWX that this shit is gonna fuck him up, but as I said in my previous commentary LWJ also has the communication skills of a hermit crab so that wouldn’t work, and JC would be too wound up and WWX too busy trying to conceal his lack of golden core for that conversation to go anywhere. But if someone who WWX knows is a good egg (I’m not gonna say trusts bc paranoia) had sat him down and told him “your new instrument that you use for your new form of cultivation just hurt the person you love most please be careful when you use it.” I think it would’ve worked wonders towards his health overall.
I know Shijie says it’s like Zidian, but she’s not working with the fact that this thing is made for and by the Dark Side of the Force and I’m sorry but I can’t help but see ChenQing as a bit of a horrocrux almost. Or like, if you like me think the Burial Mounds is an Entity, something that’s a bit more sentient that it lets on.
Speaking of reputations and NHS being a good egg, I have oh-so-many ideas (I won’t say plot bunnies because I can’t write for shit) in which NHS for Reasons (time-travel? Letter from the future? His massive brain?) realises just how much damage WWX is doing to his public image. And he might be a sheltered dandy, but he saw what being the son of a sex worker did to Meng Yao despite how hard he worked (I’m assuming he doesn’t know about the whole betrayal business). This is way fucking worse, like hell is he going to let one of his best friends paint a target on his back. So he pulls back his sleeves, engages his slytherin brain and proceeds to lay down a plan to throughly destroy WWX’s reputation as a powerful genius.
I’m guessing LWJ and JC protest, and maybe WWX, and NHS just hits them with “do you want him respected or alive?” And they shut tf up. He glues himself to WWX, and brings up as many instances in which their behaviour can be compared as he can (we got drunk and punished at cloud recesses, we slept in class, we skipped to go fishing, I don’t carry my sword either). And, because assholes be assholes, people like Sect Leader Yao or Clown Cousin are quick to start spouting their own derogatory bullshit and thus WWX the untamed powerful prodigy dies a fiery death. Now he’s just a mouthy kid with a quick mind that “does tricks instead of battle” (I’ll never get bored of using that Thor quote). I also like to think that people who personally know WWX and are not pieces of shit go give NHS a tongue lashing for messing with what they thought was his friend, NHS takes that as a test of good eggness and bring them into the plan. Soon the whole Cloud Recesses class is swearing up, down, left, right and centre that all the shit WWX has ever successfully pulled is just an insane amount of luck and quick thinking.
I don’t know how would they work him into the battlefield (disguise? Mask?) to unleash his demonic cultivation but that’s Plot and I don’t do that.
Also, because I’m a terrible human being I want to say that people assume LWJ is on “pretty but useless” WWX like white on rice because *insert derogatory comment about being good in bed and sexual favours*. Because y’all know the assholes here are Like That. And WWX is horrified because holy fucking shit he’s gonna drag LWJ’s reputation down, he can’t have people thinking HGJ is ok with having him as a concubine pretty much. But before he can act LWJ politely all but confirms that yeah, he’s tapping that, y’all wish you were but he doesn’t share and none of y’all are good enough for his Wei Ying anyway. CUE FAKE/PRETEND RELATIONSHIP BECAUSE I AM INDEED TRASH FOR THAT TROPE.
Muahahahaha y’all thought I was gonna devolve into my personal hcs and not include my fave trope? Shouldn’t y’all know me better by now?
(Btw I like this bit ^ so I might polish it a little and post it separately as well, just a warning if you find yourself reading an eerily similar post by me)
WuJi is playing and LWJ is pining so much. Also, if LWJ did not just realise that, just like Yu the Great, WWX had no other option but tame resentful energy I’ll eat my blanket.
I refuse to believe Jiang Yanli didn’t become the unofficial war camp therapist/sounding board/only sane person/everyone’s mum/I just need a hug and a corner to cry in peace. There are not enough fics about Shijie being her gentle BAMF self while in the camp and it’s a pity. My crops are dying y’all!
Also, I will fight anyone who scoffs at Shijie being the epitome of the “gentle woman who cooks and waits for the men to come back from war”. Look at her mum, do you think it is easy for a kid (she was a kid in the flashback when WWX ran away) to see that day in and day out, to have that as a “role model” and decide that she was not going to be like her mum? That she didn’t like what she saw in her so she was going to be kind and gentle? And do you think it is easy for a person barely in their twenties to deal with years of verbal and psychological abuse for again, being gentle and kind, and not grow a hard shell of bitterness to protect themselves? And to keep being gentle and kind while at war, with your parents dead and your siblings unraveling before your very eyes? Shijie is so fucking strong and I love her.
Hey look, the White Walkers!
“Resentful energy is just energy” ok, valid. But my dude, you’ve got black ghost smoke coming out of you and can hear people screaming in your head. I’m not saying it is evil, like someone’s uptight set in his ways arrogant uncle; but it sure as shit ain’t healthy.
AAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH (that’s a Clown Cousin scream btw)
Ok ok, just one little thing: IF SOMEONE ELSE CALLS WWX WEI YING AS A SHOW OF DISRESPECT IMMA SCALP THEM.
...are those crows eating that man alive? Yikes on bikes.
(Assume my comment about YiBo’s Guqin playing also goes for Xiao Zhan and his flute. I can’t play the flute but the tempo doesn’t match his fingers)
I’m just gonna say it, I think 3zun (well, 2zun as of now) suspect shit went down badly for WWX, that’s two questions by both of them in a very soft conciliatory tone. They are genuinely interested/worried about the topic, and don’t seem to come off as chiding or judgemental. I mean WWX is a weirdo irreverent kid and they’re sect leaders, they outrank him so much it’s ridiculous. I’m also counting the fact that both their baby brothers like him towards them being so kind. But I also think WWX just triggers all their big brother instincts the second he walks in.
Oh there’s a thought, Shijie, Wen Qing, NMJ and LXC take a look at everyone’s shitty parents and just decide to adopt everyone.
What happened at Yiling was a traumatised teenager (is WWX even 20?) PTSDing all over the place with the Dark Side of the Force whispering in his ear and an all powerful trinket at his disposal. Not saying I approve of all the torture and murder but he clearly isn’t revelling in them.
That is some outstanding bit of big-brothering on LXC’s side and I love it. Also, my dumbass just realised LWJ probably wasn’t quoting WWX when he was being punished (what is white what is black?) I think he was quoting his big brother. Which is magnitudes deep too, but in a different direction and I might love that scene even more.
Ok fuck it, I’m gonna tangent. So I had a terrible boyfriend when I was 15-18. He alienated me from my friends, sunk my self-esteem to the molten core of the earth, tried to convince me my parents were abusive and encouraged (aka threatened manipulated and cajoled) the slow tanking of my high school marks. I have A Problem when I see media where someone latches onto their significant other and everything they are shifts towards that person. Now, love, true genuine love, is powerful, and I believe it can be the catalyst for shifting your world-view for the better. I don’t have a problem with that. I don’t have a problem with people sticking with their romantic partner if it is clear their previous “family” is so much shit. I don’t have a problem with LWJ coming out of his shell and defying corrupt precepts because his love for WWX made them see they were wrong, or getting sassy and unrepentant during his punishment (I have a problem with the punishment bc that’s abuse but...). But I do side-eye WangXian being the only thing in their orbit. People need people, and WangXian have other good people around them. So I kind of love that yes, WWX showed him the system was corrupt, but it is the words of his brother he is sticking by to the defy said system.
Let’s go back to our scheduled slew of held pinning glances shall we?
LXC after That awkward run-in: WangJi I wasn’t gone that long, what the fuck did you two oblivious pining idiots do?
(LXC has “bitching” tea sessions with Shijie and you can’t convince me otherwise)
LWJ: *is being dramatic and not knocking on WWX’s door*
Me: oh my god you fucking idiot
Shijie: *walks in*
Me: oh thank god someone with a braincell.
Ah yes, there we go triggering WWX’s paranoia again. Why would he get a break.
OH MY GOD YOU PAIR OF FUCKING IDIOTS. THATS IT, FUCK THIS SHIT IM OUT.
@ LWJ: bitch wtf was that? I know you’re shit at talking but have you thought about writing it down? Letters anyone? It worked for mr. Darcy.
(Yes LWJ is mr darcy and now I want an au where LWJ writes WWX letters and just pours everything in them, WWX finds them, any everything is sunshine and rainbows)
While this bullshit fight/misunderstanding is all on LWJ’s shoulders, I’m also going to scream at WWX. Because yes, he is in PTSD hell, but he trusted LWJ before, and yet he can’t get past his perceived notion of LWJ’s character (and his own inadequacies) to trust him again and ask for help. Plus, you know, he thinks he doesn’t deserve he’ll bc *waves hand at WWX’s trauma conga line*
These episodes can’t be good for my BP.
Thanks for reading!
