Watched a single video talking about the tv show "Dexter" cause I like watching video essays abt shit I don't know and it sounded so... Interesting, I had to keep finding videos about it and now I'm watching the show and I think I desperately need to know the exact inside outs of this man. How he acts, how he thinks, how he reacts to things, his relationship with Deb and his past and Rita and everyone ever. He is such a bug specimen I need to put him in a jar and shake it around
#he goes âlife is awful sex is awful i dont understand feelings i love blood and deathâ#and then the next scene hes like âi like eating and driving but i want to have both hands at 2 and 10 because it isnt safe otherwiseâ#i dont think a single character has captivated me so#i need to watch all 9 seasons rn#dexter

The Arrangement (9) - The Arrangement
Chapter summary: Ava proposes an arrangement, and things get out of control with Astarion... once again.
Pairing: Astarion x female!Tav
Warnings: 18+. Alcohol. Innuendo. Body worship. (almost) Fingering. Sexual tension.
Word count: 6k
Series masterlist . Ao3
Ava extended the palm of her hand across the table, expecting you to comply with her silent request.
But you werenât so easily swindled, especially when too much of her story was beginning to rub you the wrong way.
As such, you feigned complying by placing your hand atop hers, whilst your other carefully unsheathed the dagger at your hip.
Her face held a honeyed smile that you didnât return, and your watchful eyes followed her every move,Â
But before her knife could come close to your skin, you got on your feet, sending the chair sliding across the floor before you made a lunge for her, plucking her from her seat with one hand and pressing her back against the cabinet behind, your dagger firmly held against the side of her neck.
She did try to swing the knife in her hand, but you immediately caught hold of her wrist and squeezed tight until she dropped it on the floor.
âSharp reflexes,â she noted with a curt smile.
You held her in place with the weight of your body, the sharp edge of your blade ready to slice through her skin.
âYou sound surprised.â
She smiled again. âIt is uncommon for sorcerers to be so skillful with anything but a staff and fancy hand flourishes.â
âNot many have the opportunity to learn from a seasoned rogue.â
Astarion had taken a liking to honing your dexterity, even when constantly remarking youâd never rival his.
However, in this particular moment, it did come in handy and his teachings had paid off.
âUnfortunately for you,â Ava said, her smile dropping slightly. âYou are not the only one with tricks up their sleeve.â
And before you could question her remark, you felt the cool sting of metal tapping against your neck, just above the faint bite marks from the night before.
For a moment, the grip on your dagger faltered, but you quickly regained composure, not easing the blade pressed against her skin.
âThis is coated in a most agonising poison.â
You offered a devious smile. âWhat a coincidence â so is mine.â
âAstarionâs?â
âTouchĂŠ.âÂ
A homebrew recipe that he had once shared with you.
Travelling together with Astarion had given you the opportunity to broaden your skill set and that covered knowing how to brew most basic poisons.
She did look far too amused for someone who you could easily incapacitate should she stray but a little.
âAnd here I thought we had made some progress.â
Her taunt made you snap at once. âHow much of an idiot do you take me for?â
She arched an eyebrow. âIdiot?â
You pushed harder into her, causing the glass jars inside the cabinet to rattle. âYour story sounds a little too convenient. You were a monster hunter for decades, then had a sudden change of heart, and tracked down Astarion to aid him,â your words were venomous enough to match the poison coating your blade. âIâm sorry if I have a hard time believing someone could just abandon their principles all at once and even go as far as to kill their own kin.â
Her arm was gripping yours, but you didnât flinch, your eyes boring into hers. âYou donât have to believe me. I wouldnât either, to be frank. However, you shouldn't be passing judgement when it comes to others having changes of heart.â
You remained silent.
âYou took a leap of faith with Astarion, did you not? You trusted him even after learning he could easily turn on you,â she went on, her voice now firm and low. âBut he didnât. He proved he could change, even when it goes against his very nature as a vampire spawn.â
Another wave of anger flared inside you.
How could she even compare this situation to that of Astarionâs? She was nothing like him. She didnât know the first thing about the two of you.Â
âYou utter sweetened words and use my bond with him to make me sway,â you said in a low warning tone. âBut I simply donât like you. Itâs not even about you wanting my blood â itâs how you so easily take and take from him and expect me to compactuate with it.â
Ava scoffed, trying to push you off of her but to no avail. âSo is that why youâre here? To stake your claim?â
" Claim? Astarion is his own person.â
She chuckled darkly. âYet here you are, speaking on his behalf. Enlighten me on how that works.â
Her words tore through your flesh more effectively than the knife she held to your neck ever could.
You immediately let go of her as if suddenly burned by her touch and took a few steps back, falling silent.
Was that the impression you gave her? That you were taking away his free will on this matter? Would he think the same if he knew how close you had been to sinking your dagger into her?
Shame.
Guilt.
Your chest felt impossibly heavy from the weight of your doubts, and you dropped your arm at your side at once.
Ava adjusted her dress as she straightened up, but there was no triumphant smile on her face. âI am not the enemy. You donât have to trust me â Hells, you donât have to like me â but he does to an extent, and I already said that I do not take a single drop of his blood without his full consent, as I wonât take yours.â
It was starting to overwhelm you just how hard Ava was to decode. You wanted to trust her word and to believe that helping her with your own blood could be helpful to Astarion in the long run, especially if there were people out there who wanted to hurt both of you.
But you just couldnât bring yourself to fully digest her reasoning without asking the proper questions and double checking.
You were once told: âNever swallow before chewing.â
âWhy did you kill your group, then? Why not just leave?â
Avaâs pleasant features turned sour as she returned to her seat. âThere are no fiercest shackles than those of the mind. I know it. Astarion knows it,â she said nonchalantly, placing her knife on the table. âNot that I expect you to resonate with this as Iâm sure youâve lived a sheltered life.â
Youâre wrongâŚ
On so many levels.
But you werenât going to give her leverage on your past.
Not even Astarion was aware of the intricate details of your upbringing.
âSorcerers are born with an innate talent for magic wielding,â she went on, her eyes fixed on you. âI wouldnât be surprised if your family in Baldurâs Gate ranked up high with the rest of the nobles.â
You narrowed your eyes, lips still pressed shut.
It was unfair that she was drawing all these assumptions in regards to you when they couldnât be further from the truth.
There had never been privilege.Â
The magic coursing through your body was what made you nearly lose it all onceâŚ
But silence was your best weapon now.
âNot everyone has that privilege â I know I didnât. I was forced to do the bidding of others, because that was all I knew growing up until Astarionâs case put things into perspective. Sure, I did expand my knowledge on Alchemy here and there, but I was never allowed to openly practice it,â there was a faint hint of sorrow in her voice that nearly made you feel sorry for her. Nearly. âSo long as they lived, I would never be truly free as they would make sure Iâd painfully regret leaving them. But I was done hunting those who could use a second chance, which was exactly what you offered Astarion.â
Her answer absolutely floored you.Â
Your mind wanted her explanation to not make any sense.
You wanted a reason to hate her.
A reason to tear her bond with Astarion to smithereens.
Yet here she was, giving you seemingly truthful justifications to her deeds, which further troubled your heart and mind and completely defied your anger.
Eventually, you slid your dagger back in its holster with a long sigh. âWhoâs after us?â
She crossed her legs. âI have my suspicions, but I need more time.
As much as you wanted to take her vague answer at face value, your common sense spoke louder this time.
âHow can I be sure youâre not just feeding me some fable to cover up your own tracks?â
She chuckled almost in disbelief. âYou truly are a tough one to crack, no doubt. I have a solid alibi, if that is what youâre requesting.â
âGo on.â
She paused briefly as if pondering her next words. âI was with a patriar.â
Hold onâŚ
âWho?â you immediately shot back.
âSomeone from the Parliament of Peers.â
Now, this piqued your interest. â Who?â
âRob Sorel.â
The wealthy baldurian merchant with an uncanny reputation for being ruthless when his interests were involved? The man whose wealth could easily overshadow that of a duke?
That seemed like a stretch.
A very unsettling stretch.Â
You crossed your arms. âAnd what were you doing with such an influential patriar, especially so late at night?â
Ava gave you a long and hard look, lips tugged upwards, unveiling her amusement.Â
Oh.
Oh.
âHis influence reaches beyond Baldurâs Gate and I am able to gain exclusive access to wares that aid my research.â
You felt tempted to ask what the trade off was, but judging from the way her face twisted deviously, you could tell it probably revolved around carnal pleasure, which you refused to know the sordid details of.âFeel free to have Wyll cross-check this information as Iâm sure Rob has mentioned my name.â
This nearly sent off alarm bells ringing in your head. âWyll had never heard your name before I told him.â
She chuckled again, drumming her nails on the wooden surface of the table. âOh, but he has . Ava is short for Avalar. I have had long dealings with Rob and he will uphold my alibi. Feel free to ask.â
Against your better judgement, you began to feel less⌠wary of her.
Not that you were able to fully let go of your gut feeling, but every answer was delivered with almost no hesitancy on her part and, truth be told, you would quickly be able to catch her if this involvement with a patriar was nothing but a desperate lie.
A sudden knock on the door made you jolt in place.
It was Wyll. âWe ought to get going. Are you done?â
Your eyes remained fixed on her. âYes. We're just going over some details.â
He didn't reply again and you saw Ava raise her eyebrows. âDetails?â
You ignored her remark. âWill you try to track whoever is after us, then?â
âI will.â
You swallowed. âWhat's the price?â
She rose to her feet and took slow yet sure steps towards you until she was close enough for you to fully see the olive green colour of her eyes.
âLet's just say our interests are temporarily aligned.â
Bullshit.
âYou wanted my blood.â
âI want your blood, yes. But I will settle with running a few more experiments after he's fed on you, if you accept this condition, that is.â
As far as you were concerned, you would rather she stopped meddling with anyone's blood, but Astarion seemed so confident in her promisesâŚ
Maybe there was a chance of success⌠maybe she could truly help with their hunger.
Maybe.
âOnly after you tell Astarion about this discovery of yours in regards to his blood mixing with mine,â you said firmly. âOr I will.â
She nodded, offering a sweet smile.
âDon't think of this as payment, though. A mere transaction. An arrangement, if you will.â
You were starting to dread that term as of late. It was as if everything revolved around transactions and that it was the only way people knew how to properly function and establish relationships with others.
Slowly, you nodded and, for the second time that night, Ava extended her hand to you, only this time you took it in yours.Â
A mysterious smile settled on her lips until you pulled her closer to you, lowering your voice, âI still donât trust you.â
âIâd be disappointed if you did.â
You glared intensely into her eyes, hardening your face. âAny small step in the wrong direction, and youâll hear from me.â
She nodded. âDeal.â
Then you gave her a firm shake before letting go and exiting her room without even looking back, as you were in dire need to distance yourself from the overwhelming events of tonight.
Wyll hurried to your side, glaring at you inquisitively. âSo? What did you find out? Is she to be trusted?â
âDo you know a woman who goes by Avalar?â
He tapped his chin pensively for a moment. âAvalar? That name does sound familiar. Wait â she is Avalar? The merchant?â
You nodded as you made your way down the staircase, feeling the uncomfortable and draining presence of the mage slayer right behind you.
âShe is connected to Rob Sorel, right?â
He hesitated at first, grabbing your arm and bringing you to an abrupt halt as you reached the bottom of the stairs.
âLord Sorel isnât one to trifle with idly. If she is indeed who she claims to be, then we must keep an eye on her.â
You felt a shiver run down your spine, already feeling that you might have given her the benefit of the doubt too quickly.
Wyll turned to one of the Fists by his side and gave him a silent command to which the man nodded and exited the tavern.
âShe said she was with him on the night we were caught, and that Sorel will vouch for her.â
The commotion around the two of you from the rowdy and very much intoxicated crowd made it nearly impossible to hold a proper conversation.
âI will dig around,â he said with a raise of his voice, guiding you to the door.
But you yanked free from him, which earned a wary look from the other Fist.
âI need a drink. Please.â
The Fist spoke before he could, âMy Lord, I donât think we should linger any longer.â
You rolled your eyes and promptly made your way to the counter, squeezing past a few smelly individuals who grumbled inÂ
Bork appeared rather quickly in front of you, and you blinked twice.
âWhat can I get you, missy? â
Wyll was by your side at lightning speed. âAre you sure you want to have a drink? Now?â
You never felt a particular interest in indulging in alcoholic beverages, but you craved it now more than ever.
âA pint, please.â
Borkâs lips parted into a devious smile and you tapped your fingers impatiently as he shifted to work on your request.
âYou are not one to hold your liquor, if I remember correctly, my friend,â Wyll noted, already placing one gold piece on the counter. âMayhap you ought to take a sip or two before we leave.â
He was absolutely correct, but you also needed a quick way to numb your restless mind.Â
At worst youâd get a bit too intoxicated.
At best, youâd find a way to, hopefully, sleep through what was left of this night.
As Bork set the mug in front of you and eagerly collected his payment, you grabbed it with both hands and proceeded to down the sweet liquid.
In one go.
Wyllâs hand tried to ease your eagerness, but you slapped it away with a chuckle.Â
âWhy do I have the feeling I will have to carry you home after this?â
By the time you were through with the ale, you realised you had made a severe mistake.
If Wyll had not been there to steady your unbalanced feet, you would have certainly tripped on the nearby stool.
FuckâŚ
By the time you made it back home, it was more than evident you should not have drunk all of it.
But it seemed that your brain was starting to morph a sense of guilt into finding anything within your grasp to be rather hilarious.
Even when you almost bumped into the mage slayer stationed outside your house.
You gave them a wide grin and a pat on the shoulder as if he couldnât easily split you in half.
Wyll pushed the door open and guided you inside with both hands gripping your shoulders for added support.
âEasy now. Mind the step.â
You completely disregarded his warning, which led to you almost losing balance if not for his strong arm that looped around yours, pulling you back.
You giggled.
He was truly a sweetheart.
Inside, you were met with the dim flickering of a few candles that provided enough brightness to spot the love of your life.
Wait.
Love of your life?
Scratch that. What a ridiculous overstatement.Â
âWhat in the sweet Hells took you so long?â Astarion said with a scowl, rising from his chair and heading straight towards you like an arrow.
You giggled again, throwing your arms in the air. âYou stayed up and waited for me!â
Astarion halted abruptly in front of you, hands on both hips. âI donât sleep as Iâm sure youâre aware. What is wrong with you?â
Wyll patted your back reassuringly. âSheâŚdrank a pint, and â well⌠this is the result.â
Suddenly, there were two Astarions standing next to each other and you yelped in shock, flinching back.Â
âWhy are there two of you?â you asked, pointing at them.
Both of them cocked an elegant eyebrow. âTwo of what?â
Odd.
They moved and spoke in perfect unison.Â
If one Astarion was already such a headache at times, you couldnât even begin to fathom what two Astarions would be capable of.Â
Driven by curiosity, you tried to reach out to one of them with your hand, but grasped nothing but air as your vision corrected itself and only one Astarion was left.
Really odd.
But entertaining.
He quickly gripped your gesticulating arm by the wrist. âWill you stop it? Youâll hurt yourself.â
The sudden proximity made your stomach turn dangerously, but you were far too amused to care. â Youâll hurt yourself ,â you mimicked poorly, earning another scowl.
âI let you out of my sight for a few hours and this is the result,â he said with a sigh, then turning to Wyll. âWhy would you let her drink a whole pint?â
Wyll rubbed the back of his neck. âShe insisted, and I figured she could use the distraction.â
âWhat happened with Ava?â Astarion pressed.
Oh, Gods⌠not her again. âWill everyone please stop talking about her? Gods!â
He then pulled you closer to him, not letting go of your wrist, but easing his grip.
His beautiful eyes met yours and you felt yourself swoon, feeling the image of Ava dissipating into thin air.
Gods⌠he was the most beautiful man to ever grace this earth, no doubt.
Books should be written on his beauty and songs should be sung in his honour.
You felt yourself smile widely at him, feeling a rush of heat flood your face.
Youâre so handsomeâŚ
His brows immediately furrowed.
Oh.
Shit.
You had said that aloud.
But you stood by it.
Astarion was so very handsome.
The only man who could make you yearn for him and have your heart and soul enamoured by all of him.
Then his face gradually softened. "Well, good thing there are no newshounds nearby. Can you imagine the headlines in tomorrowâs paper about the hero of Baldurâs Gate making a fool of themselves?â
You felt so giddy and drunk in his beauty that you just nodded at every word that spilled from those full lips that you wish you could justâ
Whatever you say, handsomeâŚ
âWhereâs Shadowheart?â you heard Wyll ask.
Astarion shrugged. âNo one else is here, and itâs not as if Iâm their mother.â
He was so snarky and it just made you almost melt under his touch.
âI can stay if need be.â
You rapidly turned to face Wyll, and immediately felt dizzy as Astarion steadied you.Â
âPlease stay! We can have a party!â you suggested with a dramatic pout.
Behind you, Astarion scoffed. âIâm quite sure dear Wyll is busy with his Duke duties, darling.â
Wyll chuckled. âI always make time for my friends.â
âWell, I can take it from here,â he retorted and you could spot a hint of disdain in his voice.
So attractiveâŚ
Astarion then lifted your arm and wiggled your wrist. âSay goodbye to Wyll, sweetheart.â
You giggled dramatically again. âGoodbye Wyll!â
He took a step forward and placed a gentle kiss on your forehead. âIâll be back tomorrow once I have an update on what we discussed.â
Astarion pulled you away from him at once with a gasp. âKeeping secrets from me? Oh, you two lovebirds.â
Hold on!
No! You werenât that close to Wyll.
As you were about to protest, Wyll spoke, âIf I didnât know any better, Iâd say you sound jealous, Astarion.â
âWhat is there to be jealous of, I wonder?â
You nodded vehemently, finding it utterly amusing how he sounded so territorial all of a sudden.
Adorable man.
Wyll gave a lighthearted chuckle before turning to leave. âWell, Iâm sure I can think of a few reasons.â
You laughed way too loudly at his remark, which caused Astarion to click his tongue in annoyance.
Adorable.
The door closed shut behind him, and Astarion immediately spun you on your feet to fully face them.
âWhat were you thinking? Drinking a pint?â
You couldnât care less about what he had to say in this moment, and simply glared at his face, your hazy mind reminding you just how much you adored him.
And before you could restrain yourself, the words tumbled from your mouth. âI⌠I really like you.â
Idiot.
A deafening silence settled around you, and you began to feel an increasing wave of nausea as he merely glared at you.
Then you giggled, trying to disperse the awkwardness as fast as possible.
He didnât laugh with you, tugging at your hand instead. âI think itâs time to get some sleep, darling.â
Too bad you were clearly incapable of walking in a straight line, which earned his attention. Without a warning, you felt your balance shift rapidly as he scooped you in his arms, effortlessly carrying you along the dim corridor.
âPut me down! Astarion!â
Instinctively, you looped your arms around his neck for support, but still trying to wriggle out of his fierce hold.
âI donât need to be carried⌠please put me down,â you whined. âI - I will curse you!â
An amused smile tugged at his lips. âHow very ferocious of you. I suppose we should have gotten you drunk more often back then. Iâm sure our foes would have fled in horror at the sight of you.â
You slumped into him with a pout. âMean.â
He pushed the door to your room open with a nudge from his shoulder, before easing you back on your two feet again.
The room was plunged in darkness and you felt him shift away from you, setting alight a single candle next to your bed, and you blinked a few times to adjust to the clarity.
You were now entering the less amusing stage of your insobriety and you could feel yourself scowl at him, clumsily crossing your arms.
âI should have hexed you.â
âDarling, the only thing youâll be hexing in that state is a doorknob.â
You snorted at his playful jab. âI was perfectly capable of walking!â
âInto a wall? Yes, indeed.â
He then moved back to your side, helping you out of your cloak and quickly wrapping a blanket around you.
The simple gesture was enough to melt your defiant demeanour at once.
The two of you stood there in silence, eyes locked and you found yourself wishing heâd kiss you, but you knew he never would.
Astarion valued consent above all else, and he would not cross any lines. Each time you had gotten ahead of yourself in terms of sobriety, he always reigned you in.
And that was just one of the many things you adored about him.
How safe he made you feel and how you knew heâd never take advantage of your vulnerability.Â
âYou need to properly rest,â he urged, ensuring the thick fabric around you was tucked properly in place.
Just as you were about to head to bed, you felt the room tilt to the left and you yelped, clutching onto him for support.
âIâm going to fall!âÂ
The walls around you began to swirl and sway and your own legs wobbled.
A genuine laughter rumbled across his chest as he patted your back. âYou silly little goose. Your warped mind is playing tricks on you.â
That term of endearment caught you slightly off guard and your heart fluttered.
GodsâŚ
Why was he so easy to love?
Or was this the alcohol talking? Were you truly so far gone, that the alcohol was merely making it easier to surface your feelings?
Either way, you wouldnât voice them, and allowed him to guide you to your bed, helping you to slip under the bedsheets.Â
It felt rather good being taken care of this way.Â
Maybe he didnât think of this as anything but a nuisance, but you were grateful, nonetheless.Â
âThank youâŚâ you mumbled in a whisper, gripping his hand.
The ceiling was now begging to spin dangerously fast and you had to close your eyes to help with the overwhelming sensory overload.Â
He didnât reply back, but you felt him tugging his hand away from your grasp.
A sudden shiver of panic coursed through your body. âPlease stay? You always leaveâŚâ
PleaseâŚ
He relaxed his cool hand against yours.
Slowly, you peeled back an eyelid only to see him easing onto the spot next to you over the covers.
You turned on your side to glare at him and he mimicked you, meeting your eyes in silence.
âHow do you feel?â
In love.
âWellâŚâ
He nodded and you smiled warmly at him, probably looking rather silly, but too mesmerised by his face to even look away.
âMay I touch you?â you asked hesitantly.
He arched his brow, but nodded.
You lifted your hand and with a single finger, you began to slowly trace the bridge of his nose, admiring how he didnât just look perfectâŚ
He felt perfectâŚ
âYouâre so beautifulâŚâ you sighed, feeling the slight bump of his nose as you trailed down to his lips. âSo⌠so beautiful.â
He chuckled deviously. âIâm all for praise, darling⌠do go on.â
And you wanted to, but you were beginning to feel lightheaded, and your hand dropped from his face and your eyes dropped close.
âOr notâŚâ you heard him say.
His voice seemed so distant now as drowsiness enveloped your senses. A part of you wished you could trace all of his face with the pad of your finger, worshipping every inch of him.
âPlease, donât leaveâŚâ you found yourself repeating.
He clicked his tongue. âI will if you vomit on me.â
You giggled, managing to shift closer to his body and rest your head on his still chest. âDeal, handsomeâŚâ
Your heated body welcomed his coldness, and it didnât take long for your busy mind to progressively quiet down as you drifted off into a pleasant sleep.
It was the soft click of a door being shut that roused you from your sleep. With eyes still closed, you flipped onto your back with a pained groan as your body was hit with the aftermath of last night.
âRise and shine,â Astarionâs honeyed voice filled the room.
You stretched yourself with a yawn, feeling your mouth dry as sawdust and an overwhelming thirst that nearly made you sob.
âIâm never drinking againâŚâ you whined pitifully.Â
The mattress dipped slightly next to you. âWell, how do you feel today?â
âLike deathâŚâ
âYour breath definitely reeks of it,â he said, voice dripping with disapproval. âI drew you a bath, as I anticipated youâd need one.â
At this, your eyes flew open. âIs this your chivalrous way of telling me I stink?â you grumbled, trying to make sense of your surroundings.Â
The curtains were no longer drawn and the faint light bleeding from the top and bottom was enough to tell you the sun had already risen.Â
He took your hand in his, tugging gently until you were sitting in front of him with your legs crossed. âDarling, youâre free to bask in that dreadful stench for all I care.â
You shot him a serious glare before bursting into laughter. âGood point. I need to get off these clothesâŚâ
Astarion helped you on your feet and you carefully paced across the wooden floor and into the washroom.
A pleasant smell hit you as you stepped inside, with him following closely behind.
âI borrowed a few bath salts from Gale,â he informed, pointing to the round tub in the middle of the room, almost filled to the brim with steamy water.Â
You glared at him in disbelief. âBorrowed as in⌠stolen?â
He shrugged.
You knew him too well.
âHe does have a decent selection, yet manages to always carry the most interesting smells around,â he said, bringing you over to the large basin under a round mirror. âI minced peppermint and it should help with your breath,â he added, handing you a glass of water.
You did as he advised and took a gulp, rinsing your mouth eagerly before spitting the content onto the basin.
âSo⌠are you going to tell me how the conversation with Ava went?â
Wiping your lips clean with a rag, you gave him a look.
âIt could have gone worse, I suppose.â
âCharming,â he said. âWorse as in âI almost killed herâ or âShe made me want to pluck my eyes outâ?â
âAll of the above, maybe,â you said with a roll of your eyes.
To be fair, after hearing her reasoning, she didnât come across as that bad. But you couldnât help but to still feel wary of her intentions in the long run.
Astarion was studying your face intensely as you emptied the glass of water to quench your thirst, the minty aftertaste doing wonders to your throat.
âAnything in particular I should know about?â
Besides her wanting to take my blood? Nothing at all, you thought grimly.
You merely shook your head.
âIâll be waiting outside, then.â
Right.
Bath time.
You took a quick look in the mirror and nearly groaned out loud from the sight of your weary face.
Just as you were trying to strip the shirt you had on, you huffed in annoyance, which earned his attention before he slipped out of the washroom.
âYou need help.â
You tried to pull the sleeve, but your body ached too much to comply. âI need help.â
Astarion slowly crossed the room again, and swiftly helped you out of your shirt.
You hissed as his cold knuckles brushed against your bare stomach. âCold, coldâŚâ you said, teeth jittering.
Being naked in front o fhim had long lost some of its inherent sexual meaning. It used to make you feel too exposed and only when the two of you were about to indulge in one another.
Now, it felt like something casual.
His stare didnât linger on your breasts for too long or on your now hardening nipples.
âI apologise,â he said with a smile. âLetâs get you out of these next.â
Skilled fingers worked on the front of your trousers, undoing them slowly before carefully dropping on one knee and pulling them down along your thighs.
You had to look away to hide the rush of heat that had settled on your face.
Now that felt too intimateâŚ
He tugged at your underwear next and shiveres began to prickle along your body.
You suddenly felt too exposed.Â
Astarion had seen you this bare since you last slept together before reaching Moonrise Towers.
And this new predicament had your heart strumming hard in your chest.
You slipped out of your trousers and looked down to meet his crimson eyes. âWhat?â
âMay I kiss you?â
You swallowed. Hard. âWhere?â
He leaned in to press his cold lips to the dip of your hip, lingering for a few seconds before pulling away and rising to his full height again.
GodsâŚ
âDo you need my help getting inside?â he asked and you could see it .
You could see the lust in his eyes.
You could hear the faint innuendo in his words.
And you could feel the familiar throb between your legs increasing.
âYesâŚâ
He promptly gripped your hand and you lifted each leg to dip into the nicely heated water, its surface covered in frothy suds.Â
Slowly, you lowered yourself into a sitting position before leaning back.
Astarion placed a folded towel under your neck, so you could easily relax against the wooden tub as you sank below the waterline. Â
âMay I wash you?â he asked, settling himself on his knees behind you.
You immediately nodded, gripping the edges and trying your best to ignore the swell in between your folds.
It was almost embarrassing how easily he could turn you on with mostly his words and intonation.Â
Your eyes fluttered shut and you jolted briefly when you felt a soft sponge being dragged from your neck and down your breasts.
A sigh parted your lips and you arched your back instinctively, just enough to raise your nipples above the waterline as he grazed each of them in circular motions.
You instantly clenched around nothing, knowing fully well that it would have driven him insane had his cock been buried inside you.
A second moan was heard when he started planting soft kisses along your jaw while his hand kept on gliding the sponge down your abdomen.
âDoes that feel good?â he whispered in between kisses.
Your legs parted as you welcomed his ministrations.Â
With his other hand he gripped your jaw and applied enough pressure until the back of your head hit his chest, his thumb caressingly you lovingly.
A strained whimper erupted from you when the sponge reached your folds, deliciously caressing the growing swell in between.
Your hips rolled a few times to increase the friction and you begged the Gods above to have him use his fingers insteadâŚ
âPlease⌠AstarionâŚâ
He planted a lingering kiss on your lips, pressing the sponge against you so you could grind desperately on it.
âDoes it feel good, darling?â
âUse your fingers⌠pleaseâŚâ you begged against his lips, squeezing your legs together to trap his hand as you gripped the edges of the tub for support.
He chuckled darkly, dropping the sponge and he had to cover your mouth with his other hand to muffle a loud moan as he slid one finger along your folds.
âDo you remember how many you could take?â
Your eyes rolled shut as lust clouded your senses, hips rolling at a faster pace.
All you remembered was struggling to fit his cock inside at firstâŚ
The pad of his finger teased your swell a few times before he moved to place it at your entrance.
âAnswer me.â
You could cry from the despair alone as he refused to slide a single one inside.
âI - I⌠two? Astarion⌠please⌠â
He chuckled teasingly in response, and youÂ
The door to the washroom burst open, causing him to detach from you at once.
Shadowheart.
You let out a yelp, sinking until you were neck-deep in water.
âEver heard of knocking?â Astarionâs words were dripping with poison.
âEven heard of not greeting people with... that?â
From this position you were almost at eye-level with his lower half, giving you a privileged view of his rather generous bulge, strained against his own trousers.
You felt heat flare in your cheeks as you remembered just how easily he would drip precum for you.
She hurriedly crossed the room and threw a robe at you. âDress up. Quickly .â
Lust quickly turned into panic from the way Shadowheart glared worriedly at you.
âWhat happened?â
âGale is leaving,â she said. âWe just received word from Waterdeep that his contact has been killed.â

Cody has the Force, I can prove it.
He dexterously ducks this flying molten metal slab.
He incorporates parkour into his fighting style.
And â despite a helmet with limited visibility â he catches his falling husband Obi-Wan mid-air.
Bonus slowed down Obi-Wan look of awe.
Also, bonus Codywan conceding zero personal space in a hallway wide enough to fit an AAT.

Music in the EAH Universe and who listens to them Part 2.
This is just an excuse to try to make music puns and share music I think the characters would listen to. (Some of these are even canon by the books!) I don't even like a majority of these musicians but I am fully convinced of my choices here. I marked in colours the one that are canonically part of the EAH Universe.
Since Tumblr only allows 100 inline links for a post I have to make different parts.

GUYS!!! Formally meet my DND OC Konr/ad. featuring SNZCANONSđ¸ I played him in my groupâs previous campaign and am still playing him, but this is specifically abt his previous self cus heâs a lot diff now:)
đĄď¸Here r some basics before I get to the snz stuff
Mercenary fighter (battle master)
Lawful neutral
Human
Gender: male (he/him) Age: 26 Wt.:230lbs Ht: 6â
Stats: lvl5: Strength(20)>Dexterity>Wisdom>Charisma>Intelligence>Constitution(9)
Konr/ad's earliest memories are of relentless training in his motherâs yard, driven by Odilia's harsh determination to mold him into a strong and capable individual. Despite his frail health and constant exhaustion, Konr/ad endured grueling physical labor and rigorous training, pushing himself beyond his limits to meet her expectations. As Odilia's fortunes improved, she sought to provide Konr/ad with a better life, enrolling him in an academy where he struggled to fit in among the wealthy students. After being expelled for defending a friend, Konr/ad continued his physical training and took on work to support himself and his ailing mother. Following Odilia's sudden death, Konr/ad's grief led him to alcoholism and bar fights, where his formidable strength caught the attention of the Wings of Resolve mercenary guild. Joining the guild, Konr/ad quickly became a standout member, his incredible strength and resilience making him a key asset, though he remained unaware of the extent of his abilities and was often exploited by the guild leaders for their own gain. In this campaign, Konr/ad and a group of adventurers like himself fight a bloody war in the Feywild against impossible aberrants and save mankind, barely escaping with their lives.
Kk so now for the snz canons đ
đĄď¸Heâs immunocompromised, so he gets sick a LOT and gets hit HARD. When sick his sneezes sound more desperate, usually causing him to gasp before each one
đĄď¸He usually sneezes in singles because he gets a lot of fits. So theyâre not actually singles, theyâre just spaced out lol. When not having a fit itâs either singles or doubles.
đĄď¸His sneezes are surprisingly soft. It irritates him because no sneeze is truly satisfying.
đĄď¸His buildups look like this: he kinda just stares off into space with his lips slightly parted, then gasps.
đĄď¸His sneezes usually make no mess, and he covers with his fist. His buildups give him enough time to cover.
đĄď¸His eyes are bright teal so theyâre sensitive, so the light definitely sets him off.
đĄď¸On a bad allergy day or when heâs sick he knows the mess is coming so he carries and handkerchief.
đĄď¸He has a very sensitive nose, especially cus itâs broken. He always has tho. Just rubbing his nostril the wrong way can cause him to sneeze or hitch.
đĄď¸He has mean seasonal allergies and sneezes so much sometimes to the point he gets comments on it. Ex. âYouâre running out of bless yousâ, âare you still going?â Etc.
đĄď¸He has fits almost every early morning in the spring, and scattered throughout the days during other seasons.
K thatâs a lot super sorry but thank u for reading and I hope yâall enjoyed :)

Ace attorney characters ranked based on how well I think they dance
Phoenix Wright: 6/10 heâs nothing to write home about but he took a musical theater class or two in college so he can keep a beat at least.
Mia Fey: 6/10 no real interest in dancing but she's not bad or anything. could keep up with Diego well enough
Apollo Justice: 4/10 he wouldnât suck so bad if he could just loosen up.
Athena Cykes: 9/10 very fit. does cardio. has taken some dance classes for fun.
Maya Fey: 8/10 what she lacks in skill she makes up for in spirit
Pearl Fey: 6/10 has the physical abilities to dance but not the confidence. also has very little reference for how she could be dancing
Trucy Wright: 8/10 performer with good dexterity for sleight of hand. Music isnât really her area of expertise but she does well enough. enjoys playing just dance with Athena
Miles Edgeworth: 3/10 he can do one dance and itâs the Steel Samurai season 4 ending credits dance and he does it flawlessly but nothing else. took ballroom dancing classes with the von Karmas but he wasnât particularly adept.
Franziska von Karma: 4/10 she found the aforementioned ballroom dancing classes tedious but damn if she wasnât going to perform in them perfectly. she canât do anything else and refuses to try
Godot: 7/10 he can do a killer tango
Klavier Gavin: 2/10 despite being an internationally famous rockstar, when performing he usually has a guitar in his hands so heâs never needed to dance. he cannot dance. he doesnât particularly want this info getting out
Simon Blackquill: 6/10 danced with Athena a fair bit growing up. knows several anime dances
Nahyuta Sahdmadhi: 7/10 i haven't met this guy yet but my friend tells me they think he'd know a fair bit of traditional dances.
Winston Payne: 0/10 or 10/10 no in between. he's either literal garbage or so bad it loops back around to incredible. he had insane disco game in the 70s but now all the rookies laugh at him.
Larry Butz: 8/10 best dancer between him, Phoenix and Miles. heâs gotta be getting his girlfriends somehow
Dick Gumshoe: 5/10 a little too clumsy and can't keep a beat well but bonus points for his enthusiasm
Ema Skye: 1/10 doesn't even try
Kay Faraday: 10/10 incredible dexterity and physical ability. lots of whimsy and spirit.
Sebastian Debeste: 3/10 despite the baton, no real sense of rhythm
Manfred von Karma: 4/10 the one to sign Franziska and Miles up for ballroom dance lessons
Matt Engarde: 2/10 he got the jammin samurai killed so I donât think he can jam
Dahlia Hawthorne: 8/10 she can boogie. gets down at clubs and parties. arguably the most normal about dancing
Sister Iris: 7/10 had to learn to boogie to properly emulate her sister but she isnât quite as suited for it and has much less experience
Kristoph Gavin: 1/10 he likes watching but he doesnât dance at all
Ryunosuke Naruhodo: 10/10 the most beautiful dance of deductions you've ever seen in your life
Susato Mikotoba: 10/10 while she's not particularly skilled with a koto, she learned to dance from the best
Herlock Sholmes: 10/10 THE dancer. THE ONE AND ONLY great detective known for his dance of deductions
Iris Wilson: 10/10 raised by the aforementioned one and only herlock sholmes
Yujin Mikotoba: 10/10 took to tap dancing incredibly well during his time in britain
Kazuma Asogi: 6/10 he's not particularly good but he somehow makes it look cool anyway
Barok Van Zieks: 7/10 used to be much better, before the professor kililngs he actually enjoyed dancing a fair bit. took classes growing up. retained a lot of the muscle memory
Gina Lestrade: 6/10 she doesn't have any training but if she did she'd do fairly well
Tobias Gregson: 2/10 he's the best investigator at scotland yard according to Sholmes, so you can imagine how bad the rest of the yard is at dancing
Maria Gorey: 8/10 she can dance just fine she just has no interest. the one time they got her to dance Herlock had very courteously offered his body up for dissection. "AFTER I'M DEAD, WOMAN!"
Albert Harebrayne: 1/10 he can't. he tries. Barok tried to teach him. he understands the theory! he knows the steps! he can't do it. he can't.

7 years have passed since Samurai Jack got back to the past...
Highlights of events regarding Genndy Tartakovsky and the like during this time include the following:
Genndy in interviews talked about the importance of visual storytelling (including an obvious disliking for "This is me"-type openings in animated movies), reducing dialogue in the script for a sexual animated comedy called Fixed (produced by New Line Cinema, Sony Pictures Animation, and Renegade Animation), and the viewpoint that "Character design informs posing, and it all works together."
Samurai Jack has the Checkered Past lineup on [adult swim] joined, airing on Fridays (soon to be Thursdays) at 6:00 PM... technically like around 5:59 PM, due to other Checkered Past shows having end credits time-compressed. Cartoon Network's social media accounts promoted this with a clip from EPISODE XCVIII, which is the second post they made regarding specifically Season 5 since their first one, in which they used Mao Mao x Samurai Jack fan art to promote Samurai Jack: Battle Through Time... which is now deleted due to Warner Bros. Discovery purging Mao Mao: Heroes of Pure Heart in an effort to save $3 billion.
Speaking of WBD's animation purge: Cartoon Network Studios' building is now abandoned as the crew was forced to relocate to a new building joining Warner Bros. Animation with affiliate CNS as another cost-cutting move. The Cartoon Network logo on the building was originally moved to the new building, but it was soon sold off letter by letter.
As if things couldn't grow worse; after MGM (on the home entertainment level, still an affiliate with Warner Bros. Home Entertainment/Studio Distribution Services) turned 100, Primal Screen, the studio behind much of Cartoon Network's branding including the Powerhouse era, announced that they were to shut down (likely due to financial issues - thanks a lot Warner Bros. Discovery). Buck's Pastel / Prism / Split-Screen branding is by far the cheapest, blandest, and ugliest one CN ever used, and the negative consequences of Discovery on Turner & WB make this era of CN truly the worse, with little sign of any improvement in their branding and their programming.
Unicorn: Warriors Eternal got the ACME Night marathons and airings it was promised to have, but that is unlikely to happen again since Cartoon Network stopped at 5PM with the debut of Checkered Past, causing ACME Night to be part of [as] as well (that may be just technical laziness on Discovery's part - they're already forcing Turner channels to use Discovery's rating & closed captioned screenbugs). Any future airing of Unicorn on TV, if any, so far will remain with the [adult swim] label, even on ACME Night (even though it was supposed to be for CN).
Relative to samurai in general; the Looney Tunes Cartoons episode "Yosemite Samurai" made its TV debut on Cartoon Network, though airing minutes earlier than the 9:30 AM schedule due to longer episode lengths.
Teen Titans GO! celebrated the 100th anniversary of Warner Bros. in October 2024 (was planned for September but was pushed in part due to revisions), and apparently "JACK, SAMURAI" was on the list! Dexter and Dee Dee, along with The Powerpuff Girls (in altered versions of the 2016 models), made cameos as well.
Tara Strong (a Zionist Jew and the voice of Ashi as well as Ilana Lunis) became controversial due to posts she made and liked speaking against the attacks against Jews by the Hamas, a terrorist group in Palestine. I may suffer from flack over this, but I honestly doubt that she is ultimately racist with the people of Palestine in general - just speaking against a terrorist group in Palestine killing people of her own race. May be that we're just too woke about racism?
The Powerpuff Girls Season 10 (the Hanna-Barbera Studios Europe revival; I personally count the 2016 "reboot" as Seasons 7-9 for a number of reasons) is still in production with people from Titmouse on the crew.
Dexter's Laboratory: The Complete Series DVD is set to release in June 2024... featuring the long overdue official US DVD release of Dexter's Laboratory: Ego Trip! There was a planned US DVD release long ago.
Warner Bros. may be 101 years old now (impressive considering that Discovery put them at over 60% risk of bankruptcy by December 2023), but they're not finished with celebrating their 100th anniversary; a screening of various WB (and affiliate-owned) shorts including Cartoon Network episodes like Dexter's Laboratory and the Steven Universe pilot "The Time Thing" (on which Genndy was the timing director) was announced for Annecy 2024.
Relative to a block that Samurai Jack used to rerun on; [adult swim] announced another nostalgic block: Toonami Rewind! This is so far exclusive to anime.
Personally, Cartoon Network entering into the Pastel era was bad enough, but Discovery exercising more control of WB affiliate Turner Broadcasting System pretty much killed CN for me (regardless of the many older shows airing on special occasions that weren't rerun on the network in years and even decades). I still remain faithful to a fair extent to CN, but, as you can see, there's a lot about the animation industry that's crumbling.
I'll add more to this post if I find anything else that happened.

Top 10 Worst Main Characters In Cartoons
#10. Kick Buttowski (Kick Buttowski: Suburban Daredevil): Kicking off our list (no pun intended) is the one trick pony of a character that is Kick Buttowski. His character begins and ends with him wanting to do extreme stunts. That'd be fine for a 7 minute short as a tribute or parody to stuntmen like Evel Knevel, but for an animated series? His shtick gets old very fast and he's nothing more than a blank slate of a character.
#9. Lincoln Loud (The Loud House): A smug, narcissistic brat, Lincoln treats his sisters like a means to end at best and a pain to live with at worst. Not only does he show contempt with them on a daily basis, but he's also not afraid to humiliate and take advantage of them to stroke his own ego. Would you believe this kid's named after one of the greatest Presidents of all time.
#8. Katie Mitchell (The Mitchells vs The Machines): Nothings makes me hate a movie more than how hatable the main character is. Katie is selfish, annoying, ungrateful, and not even remotely funny. She has this bitter and resentful attitude towards her father when they were once best friends, and the way she makes this story about her is very condescending. If the movie had been about her as a child and putting her relationship with her non-tech savy father to the test, maybe I'd sympathize with her more, but as a teenager ready for college, she's just a brat.
#7. Nancy Clancy (Fancy Nancy): I now know how Dora's detractors feel after watching Fancy Nancy. Nancy is such an obnoxious, pampered brat that talks down to the audience like we're pesents and always acts like a fancy life is the best life. She's very rude, selfish, and narcissistic, all of which are qualities you're NOT supposed to have when trying to be fancy.
#6. Miriam "Mimi" Mortin (What About Mimi?): No, this gif isn't from the villain of this obscure show. It's from the main protagonist...and that's just the tip of the iceberg. Mimi is a stupid, selfish, and annoying kid who makes simple problems worse by going overboard with her plans and throwing her friends under the bus. She's also very irresponsible and oblivious to the fact that she's no better than the show's designated spoiled brat, Sincerity.
#5. Kai (The Hollow): The one character that singlehandedly makes the show worse, Kai is everything Adam and Mira DIDNâT need on their journey. He's whiny, selfish, short-tempered and a big, fat coward. Whenever there's danger, his first and only instinct is to head for the hills instead of helping his friends. He also needlessly starts arguments with Adam because Heaven forbid 2 guys have a normal conversation together without it turning into a shouting match.
#4. Kiff Chatterley (Kiff): What do you get when you put Mimi's personality in a squirrel who's dumber than a sack of acorns? You get Kiff! She's selfish, annoying, stupid, irresponsible, and overdramatic over the simplist of things. What puts her above Mimi on the list is Kiff is the 4th irresponsible main female character I had the displeasure of sitting through after I specifically said I was done with these types of character. The character's a bigger waste of time than watching a worm try to crack open a safe.
#3. Molly McGee (The Ghost and Molly McGee): If you thought Dee Dee from the last 2 Seasons of Dexter's Lab was a headache, you might want to where a helmet when being in the same room as Molly McGee. She's annoying, inconsiderate, loud, obnoxious, and really stupid. She never thinks before she acts and every time she opens her mouth, she never shuts up. The worst part about her is the fact that Scratch can't just leave her because he put a curse on her, meaning he's stuck suffering with the audience listening to this chatterbox.
#2. Oscar Peltzer (Summer Camp Island): It boggles my mind how Hedgehog, nevermind ANYONE, would be friends with this kid. Oscar is selfish, annoying, inconsiderate, and stupid. He goes through Hedgehog's personal stuff, cheats at games and gets lost in the city. He also has a bad habit of not thinking before he acts, making him all the more annoying and stupid.
#1. Apple and Onion (Apple & Onion): No need to imagine a show with 2 annoying side characters as the main characters, because it already exists. Apple and Onion are easily the worst characters in Cartoon Network's history. In addition to being annoying and stupid, they also lack basic chemistry with each other and are painfully unfunny. What puts them at #1 though is Apple's fatphobia and Onion's complacency to said fatphobia. Need I say more? -.-
Conclusion: These cartoon protagonists are not only bad role models, but they're also just badly written. Whether they be annoying, stupid, irresponsible, or selfish, trust me when I say you DON'T want characters like these as the protagonist of your show/movie. Either audience's will mistake them as villains, or they'll just tune out. Dishonorable mentions go to Fei Fei from Over The Moon (I've talked enough about that brat -.-), Bloo from Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends (I wouldn't have blamed Mac for not visiting Foster's anymore after the birthday party episode), and Rick Sanchez from Rick & Morty (would've made the list, but I don't wanna give Rick & Morty any more attention than it has already). Thanks for reading, and I'll see you soon ;)

Dexterâs Lab Season 5 (or 7 & 8) will begin production soon
This winter, the 5th season of Dexterâs Laboratory will begin production at Cartoon Network Studios in Burbank, California after the crew were working from home due to COVID-19 4 years ago & the episodes will be animated overseas in the Philippines & South Korea. Snipple Animation in Quezon City for most episodes & Rough Draft Korea for some episodes. The biggest changes for the season will be a new title sequence & the current 16:9 aspect ratio (1.78:1), which most Cartoon Network original shows use today. The future season of Dexterâs Lab will probably premiere on Netflix & later on Discovery Family (owned 60% by Warner Bros. Discovery) sometime early 2026, this time it wonât be a reboot unlike Ben 10.

Unicorn: Warriors Eternal Spoiler-Filled Review
Unicorn: Warriors Eternal is a mature supernatural fantasy comedy with steampunk elements. Genndy Tartakovsky, who is well-known in the animation industry, is the director and creator. He is best known for Dexter's Laboratory, Star Wars: Clone Wars, Sym-Bionic Titan, and Samurai Jack, and more recently, Primal. This piece was written during the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Without the labor of the writers and actors currently on strike, Unicorn: Warriors Eternal, being reviewed here, wouldn't exist.
Reprinted from Pop Culture Maniacs and Wayback Machine. This was the forty-first article I wrote for Pop Culture Maniacs. This post was originally published on July 24, 2023.
This series has a simple plot: a group of heroes are inadvertently awakened by Copernicus, a steam-powered robot, in bodies of three teenagers (Emma, Alfie, and Dimitri), rather than in bodies of adults, like in the past. These heroes are opposed by a mysterious foxlike woman (voiced by Grey DeLisle), who embodies evil.
Unicorn: Warriors Eternal drew me in as a person who enjoyed watching Star Wars: Clone Wars as a kid (and have re-watched it various times), and liked Samurai Jack and Sym-Bionic Titan. Voice actors like Jacob Dudman (voice of Edred) who voiced two characters in Primal, and DeLisle, voice of the mysterious woman and the original Melinda, strengthen this series.
Delisle is well-known for her work in animation, including voicing characters in Invincible, Kid Cosmic, The Owl House, Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts, DC Super Hero Girls, She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, Elena of Avalor, Star Wars Rebels, The Legend of Korra, Young Justice, and My Life as a Teenage Robot. In contrast, Hazel Doupe, the voice of Emma in this series, is unique. This is her first voice role, as she has only done live-action series before.
I wasn't as familiar with Jeremy Crutchley, Demari Hunte, Alain Uly, Tom Milligan, Ron Bottita, or George Webster, the voices of Merlin, Alfie, Seng, Lord Edward Fairfax, and Winston in Unicorn: Warriors Eternal. I say this even though Crutchley voiced Glad-One and One in Infinity Train, and Uly as Lieutenant Maylur and two stormtroopers in Star Wars: The Bad Batch.
Others, such as Hunte, Milligan, Bottita, Webster, appear to be new to voice work. Rosalind Ayres (voice of Lord Katherine Fairfax) previously voiced characters in video games while Robbie Daymond (voice of various one-off characters) lent his voice to the notorious Curious Cat in Volume 9 of RWBY! He voiced Jesse in Infinity Train season 2, Raymond in OK K.O. Let's Be Heroes!, and many other English dubs of anime characters.
The steampunk setting in Victorian London, in 1890, in this series, reminded me of Steamland in Disenchantment, the upper city in Arcane, or the similarly steampunk action anime, Princess Principal, which spawned a multi-part film series. The steampunk genre has even reached into indie animation and comics. It includes films like Snowpiercer, Atlantis: The Lost Empire, and Howl's Moving Castle, along with animated series like Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water and The Legend of Korra. I am even reminded of an unaired 2001 pilot for Constant Payne, by Indigenous writer Micah Wright. It has a strong steampunk aesthetic.
Unicorn: Warriors Eternal is different than all of those previously mentioned. It is unique in its own way. Just as Samurai Jack was set in the future, with magic, robots, lasers, and the like, this series is set in an alternate world. Unlikely the haphazard and strange inclusion of futuristic technology in the far-too-short Yasuke, this series is much more complete. It draws inspiration from works by animators Max Fleischer and Osamu Tezuka, films by Hayao Miyazaki (like Howl's Moving Castle) and other steampunk aesthetics.
The show's character designer, Stephen DeStefano, worked on Sym-Bionic Titan, Primal, and other projects, with Tartakovsky. He pushed, as did Tartakovsky, to ensure the series had an "old aesthetic" but was told "in a very contemporary way". The studio producing the series, Cartoon Network Studios, has produced many of Tartakovsky's previous projects. Some of the same animators who worked on his previous projects may be working on this series.
These animators could not do their work without the writers. If a recently circulated spreadsheet is representative of Cartoon Network Studios as a whole, it would mean that, for animators, there is repetitive work, little opportunity for advancement, sterile environment due to the Warner-Discovery merger, disorganization, burnout, and overwork. There are two primary show writers: Darrick Bachman and Tartakovsky. While the latter is more well-known, the former is not, despite his work on Primal, Samurai Jack, Regular Show, Star Wars: Clone Wars, and many animated series, some of which he worked on with Tartakovsky.
If Glassdoor is accurate, each of these writers makes somewhere between $46,000 to $83,000 a year. I would guess that Tartakovsky is paid more than Bachman. In any case, the conditions the writers work in influences whether a show is "high-quality" or "low-quality". High Guardian Spice was said to be the latter, until it was revealed that the working conditions at Crunchyroll were horrendous. This does not appear to be the case for Cartoon Network Studios. The recent closure of the iconic studio's headquarters, with employees told to move to a sterile, lifeless Warner Bros. building instead, it does not bode well.
Even some predicted that under David Zaslav, it is difficult to "imagine a future in which the studioâs original animation output can match what it has been in the past," with a strong shit to reboots rather than original series. However, if the writers, and actors, are successful in their strike, these conditions may change for the better. On the other hand, the studios are doing all they can to burn down motivation of actors and writers, while stockpiling completed works and scripts before the strikes began.
youtube
Coming back to the series, Unicorn: Warriors Eternal is a relatable coming-of-age story. The protagonist, Emma (who can transform into Melinda) is struggling to determine whether she is "Emma" or "Melinda". She loses control of her powers after any emotional outburst she has. Having one's powers tied to their emotions is not new. In the last half of Elena of Avalor's final season, the protagonist, Elena Castillo Flores, had to wrestle with the fact that her magical abilities were tied to her emotional moods. The same was the case for Steven Universe in the series of the same name, and in Steven Universe Future.
For Emma/Melinda, her anger and fury seem to be how she expresses her power, in a super saiyan esque transformation. While this expression of raw power can be effective in defeating enemies, it doesn't prevent her from hurting people, unintentionally, in the process. For instance, in the second episode, she uses this power to defeat a huge magically possessed elephant. However, her fiancĂŠ Winston is badly hurt in the process and the surrounding area is nearly obliterated.
The use of her abilities in Unicorn: Warriors Eternal are complicated by her relationship with Edred, a warrior elf. He reincarnates in the body of a wanna-be magician named Dimitri. After Copernicus resurrects him, he rushes over to Emma/Melinda, and kisses her. While he has memories of their relationship, Melinda-as-Emma does not. Making matters worse, she still has some romantic feelings for Winston, who wants to "rescue" her from her "new" form.
This contrasts with Edred. He can effectively fight with a sword in manner which almost seems reminiscent of the sword-wielders in anime or those in Western animations like Amphibia, She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, and Steven Universe. Like all Tartakovsky productions, Edred has his own specific style. Every character is stylized in their own way. This is thanks to the aforementioned character designer, DeStefano, and work by many others at Cartoon Network Studios. The same is the case for their battle moves and attacks. It sets the series apart from others with similar themes.
The team of Emma/Melinda, a cosmic monk named Seng (in the body of a young Black ruffian named Alfie), Copernicus, and Edred, make an interesting combination. Each has personal issues they must overcome. Seng cannot fully comprehend the cosmic plane as a young child. Edred has a "clouded" mind despite having a largely intact memory and retains his power. Emma/Melinda has an identity crisis. She even tells Winston, at one point, that she isn't Emma anymore and that the Emma he knew is dead. This is a cold, hard truth which is hard for him to accept.
The complications in each character's lives make it an increasing challenge for these heroes, whose souls are tasked with protecting the world throughout eternity. With the scrambled memories, especially of Emma/Melinda, and the fact that only Edred remembers the most about their role in fighting evil, it makes the story that much more intriguing. The secretive villain is almost as devious as Shadowy Figure in O.K. KO!, but shares more characteristics with Kilgore in Justice League x RWBY: Super Heroes and Huntsmen, Part 1. He aimed to change the Justice League into teenagers, so they are "vulnerable", are ripped apart by the world, and have to deal with emotions they ignore or regress as adults.
There is one major difference. The villain in Unicorn: Warriors Eternal never intended on awakening the Order of the Unicorn (Melinda, Seng, Edred, and Copernicus). Instead, she wanted to destroy Copernicus so the order would cease to exist. The villain exploits the situation for her own ends. She hopes that these heroes will be resurrected one final time. The heroes will do anything they can to stop this evil, with Edred declaring that the villain will "not succeed".
In future seasons, Melinda's insecurities may be exploited just as Invictus did with Ash Graven in Final Space. If so, she may turn against her friends. It is hard to say whether the series villain will be as devious as Aku, who had built an entire empire and dedicated many of his resources to track down Samurai Jack.
youtube
By the show's third episode, there is a clear focus on discrimination, specifically how humans will "other" that which they don't understand. The response of the British police and Scotland Yard to a theft of priceless artifacts bound for the British Museum is to arrest anyone engaged in "magic" in London. There are mass arrests of soothsayers, fortune tellers, and anyone else on Mystic Row.
To make matters worse, they put up a Wanted poster for Emma/Melinda. Even when two spiritualists, Clarice Leydoux and Lao Xi Sheng, tell the police detective the reality, he doesn't believe them. Clearly, the police in this series, including Inspector General Hastings (voiced by Gildart Jackson), do not know how to deal with the situation at hand. People such as Agatha (voiced by Rosalind Ayres), another royal official, try and put in place more order.
Through it all, Emma/Melinda tries to figure out herself. She isn't sure of her connection with Winston, who she inadvertently injured. She even goes to a seance which separated her two identities, making her question whether she wants to be a hero or not. As a result, she declares that she hates the other part of herself. Her father even realizes that she is different, remarking "that is not our daughter". Winston remains in pursuit, even when he clashes with Edred on who "truly" loves her.
After the first two episodes, the series explored the insecurities of Seng. The villains cause him to be swallowed by a cosmic fox. The latter, known as a Lady Fox, attacks them. An amazingly animated chase scene on the rooftops follows, reminding me of similar scenes in Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Samurai Jack. In the fourth episode, this is more apparent. Seng is unable to use his powers while he is trapped on an abandoned ship with other Unicorn team members. He even starts to become translucent! Although they escape this predicament, it could foreshadow more trouble for Seng in the future.
As Emma/Melinda learns more about the story of her Melinda side, with the child version of original Melinda voiced by Marley Cherry Hilbourne. She learns that her mother, Morgan Le Fay (voiced by Peta Johnson), was terribly injured, thanks to her. It is revealed that Merlin (voiced by Jeremy Crutchley) is her father. The conflict between the two halves of herself remains an important part of the story. This is especially the case when they all fight a big squid threatening to destroy the town. Her attempts at reconciliation do not go well, even though she is making some progress by the seventh episode.
At the end of the fifth episode, Unicorn: Warriors Eternal takes a bold step: it appears to kill off one of its protagonists, Copernicus. This is comparable to a similar "loss" of Octus in Sym-Bionic Titan. While Emma/Melinda is most distraught, she works together with Edred to find someone to repair Copernicus. They find an inventor named Otto (voiced by Jason O'Mara), thanks to a robot named Dashwood (voiced by Chris Butler). He works on a huge floating airship, which functions like a space station.
He remarks that Copernicus is like a robot he hasn't created yet, but he says it feels familiar. Copernicus cannot fully come back until his magical power is restored. He is a futuristic magical being. The power from an ancient magical stone is used by Merlin. He brings Copernicus back to life. Even so, this sequence implies that Copernicus can die, in certain instances.
The seventh episode of Unicorn: Warriors Eternal is a rollercoaster ride. It is revealed that Edred left his bride-to-be, in an arranged marriage meant to unite two clans, to be with Melinda. At the same time, it is further implied that Emma/Melinda somewhat remembers this. The quest to get the necessary magical power, the presence of Merlin, and restoration of balance, causes Edred's brother, Aelwulf (voiced by Jack Bandeira), to regain respect for him.
At the end of the seventh episode, the Unicorn team learns that they still have evil to fight, and that their time in this world has not ended. It is implied that Merlin will help they stop it. The eighth episode throws this into question. Out of nowhere, Merlin appears and tells them to come "quickly" to battle an evil machine killing the land. While they meet the mighty tiger Rakshasa (voiced by Sunkrish Bala), Merlin attacks Emma/Melinda, surprising them all.
youtube
The last three episodes of Unicorn: Warriors Eternal lay bare tensions between the group members. This is clear with the addition of a new member, Winston, who can become a werewolf. Predictably, Edred objects, as Winston has feelings for Emma/Melinda. All the while there is the fight against evil, which exudes dark magic.
This reaches a critical point in the ninth episode when the evil leaves Merlin and enters the cosmic realm. They meet an older Seng who has been fighting it for over 20 years, with no success. It is said that if the evil devours everything, the world will end. Merlin and Rakshasa remain optimistic until Emma and Melinda are split apart.
I wish Unicorn: Warriors Eternal had been longer. By the eighth episode, it appears that Melinda is coming to peace with the part of her who is Emma, and vice versa. This seemed too quick. Her struggle with her identity could have stretched across an entire season of 20 to 26 episodes. Take Cassandra in Rapunzel's Tangled Adventure, for example. She is mentally manipulated by Zhan Tri. Even so, she tries to figure out her identity and how she feels about Rapunzel. Like that series, which ended with a bang, this series is burdened by compulsory heterosexuality. Tangled differs by featuring well-recognized gay vibes between Rapunzel and Cassandra, shipped by fans as "Cassunzel".
Much of the internal struggle that Emma/Melinda experiences is couched by a love triangle. Emma loves Winston, while Melinda loves Edred. However, Edred hates Winston and vice versa. Due to the propensity of male characters in this series, there isn't any character, female, non-binary, or otherwise, written for Emma/Melinda that would allow her to have a queer romance.
Even so, the struggle of Emma to reunite with Melinda, resulting in defiance of her by-the-book parents, is promising. Considering this series is set in the 1890s, it is no shock that Emma's parents try to hold her back. They think she is out of her mind and want to bring her to a doctor, who will commit her to an asylum. Her actions, including drawing on equations on the walls of the bathroom, akin to the oft-memed scene from It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia in which Pepe Silvia goes on a conspiratorial rant, don't help her case. In her defense, she is desperate and wants to get back to the cosmic realm at any cost.
This episode goes off the rails when two huge men try to capture Emma and bring her to "the doctor". What follows is an intense chase scene in which Emma has many near-death experiences, and barely escapes those trying to get her, even riding a steam-powered tram to Mystics Row. Two mystic warriors (Clarice Leydoux and Lao Xi Sheng) offer to help her. With their assistance, she uses the Heart of the Forest to get to the cosmic realm.
The Unicorn: Warriors Eternal finale concludes strongly. Emma inspires everyone, reuniting with Melinda, and convinces them to combine their powers into one. They strike a decisive blow against evil forces. This is blunted by the surprising revelation: Morgan is trapped in the heart of the evil beast! At the end of the episode, the protagonists find themselves in a bizarre world in which "the evil" has changed everything. Emma/Melinda gets the last word, noting their determination to save Morgan and defeat the evil being no matter what.
The ending is not definitive, but is open-ended. The central conflict rings true, especially if seen as a metaphorical extension of Genndy Tartakovsky as a Jewish immigrant who faced pressure to support his mother and live up to the myth of a "model minority". A possible second, or even third, and fourth season, could expand upon these characters and their struggles. Possibly, the series may go an Infinity Train route, having different characters for each season.
I hope that any possible future seasons of Unicorn: Warriors Eternal would increase diversity of the cast. Surely, there are talented voice actors like a Black men Demari Hunte (voice of Seng) and Victor Alli (voice of Adult Seng). They are joined by a Filipino man, Alain Uy (voice of Lao Xi Sheng), an American actor of Tamil descent, Sunkrish Bala (voice of Rakshasa), and a British actor of Iraqi, Lebanese, and Indian descent, Brian George (voice of Darvish).
From the available lists of the cast members, I'm not seeing much diversity beyond the aforementioned individuals. A quick read of the cast list for Primal, indicates that the series has a much more diverse cast than this series! Perhaps, this is just reflecting the fact that historically, London was ethnically homogeneous, composed primarily of White British residents, until after World War II. By 1891, over 5.6 million were living in Greater London, a number which would grow in later years.
youtube
Cartoon Network Studios president, Sam Register, is an executive producer, and Shareena Carlson is supervising director. Unicorn: Warriors Eternal is expertly animated thanks to Studio La Cachette in France and Studio Zmei in Bulgaria. Cartoon Network Studios is the aforementioned production company. This is reinforced by the show's music, composed by Tyler Bates and Joan Higginbottom. It is effective, connecting the action with the story. It makes you excited to watch each episode, and become more invested in the characters.
None of this is much of a surprise. Bates is a well-known producer, composer, and musician, primarily of action and horror media, including the John Wick franchise. He was probably chosen because he composed the music scores of Sym-Bionic Titan, the fifth (and final) season of Samurai Jack, and Primal.
Similarly, Higginbottom was a composer on the same season of Samurai Jack, Primal, and John Wick Chapter 4. Tara Billinger, known as the creator of Long Gone Gulch and a storyboarder, did production work on the series as well. The animators either worked on French productions not known in the U.S., or series such as Love, Death & Robots, and Primal. Even Tartakovsky did some storyboarding. The animation, background art, and set pieces are strong in this series.
Unicorn: Warriors Eternal may have been a passion project for Tartakovsky. However, it is incorrect that the plot is "humdrum". Furthermore, Emma/Melinda is not a "poorly written" character, nor does she have a "pat dilemma" or lack emotional complexity. Her struggles are at the series' center. On the other hand, this series, like Dexter's Laboratory, Samurai Jack, Star Wars: Clone Wars, Sym-Bionic Titan, and Primal, is male-centered. In fact, Emma/Melinda is the only female protagonist.
The series has "urgent stakes" and the characters are intriguing. This accompanies amazing mythologies and some worldbuilding. It could be better, but it is not missing "the magic of Tartakovsky". Instead, this series is unique and different from other Tartakovsky series in the past. Surely, I'd love to have queer characters and even have a love triangle akin to the one between Hazumu Osaragi, Yasuna Kamiizumi, and Tomari Kurusu in Kashimashi: Girl Meets Girl. Unfortunately, this series did not go that direction, instead having male-female couples, without any one-way crushes.
Overall, despite my criticisms, Unicorn: Warriors Eternal is an enjoyable series and I'd recommend it. I can hope that it improved to become even better, breaking out of the good-evil dichotomy, and other common tropes used in Tartakovsky's work.
Unicorn: Warriors Eternal can be watched on Adult Swim or streamed on Max, DirectTV, and Spectrum. It can be purchased through Prime Video, Google Play, Vudu, or Microsoft Store.

Day 9 - Lend an Ear - Luvon + Strum - G
Summary: Luvon gets worried when his mentor is gone for too long.
A near season had passed since Luvonâs mentor last visited, and he was beginning to get antsy about it.Â
Normally the bard tried to stop by at least once a moon, so he must have gone really far away this time. It meant heâd have a lot of great songs to sing when he finally did arrive, but Luvon would take more frequent or longer stays over extra fascinating tales any day. Especially as Strum got older, there was no telling how long the visits would continue, when the final visit would be⌠It may have happened already! Luvon had always been a worrier, something his mother chastised him for repeatedly, but he couldnât help it! Their village, nestled in this cave, was safe, but the star beyond these passageways was not. It was something drilled into his head ever since he could remember. The desert was unforgiving, and beyond its reaches lay all sorts of paths of destruction. If they were lucky and didnât bear witness to any of the horrors out there, if they kept praying to the star, then maybe they could be spared. But that left his mentor completely vulnerable out there! Could nobody see what a problem this was? What if Strum broke a leg while on a trip, and he couldnât escape a monster chasing him? What if he got crushed by a frenzied crowd because they liked his music too muchâor worse, hated it! What if he fell overboard while sailing or his airship blew up, or an incurable disease got him, or he stumbled into a war zone, or a giant plant swallowed him upâ What if he wasnât coming back?Â
What if he was already dead?Â
How would Luvon even find out?Â
The others in his village tolerated Strum, as he used to be one of them, and so was one of the few trusted to trade with them, but nobody would go out looking for him. Lack of caring, and not being allowed to leave, by the rules of their Seer. Only hunters and those willing to cut ties could come and go. Luvon was the only one fussing over his mentor, so he doubted he could convince one of those people to ask around at the nearest oasis town about an old hrothgar with a lute. Luvon decided if Strum hadnât appeared again by heavensturn, he was going to sneak out and find him all on his own, the rules be damned. He excelled in his sightless navigation studies, so he knew how to sneak around noiselessly and dexterously. Certainly heâd be able to get past everyone while the town slept. He steeped in worry for a few more weeks and nearly unraveled the bottom hem of his dress with his ceaseless fidgeting whenever he thought about Strumâs absence for too long, but his plans need never be put into motion, as the news came to him that his dear mentor was finally in town again.
â
Strum had trained his eyes back to a state where he could see Luvon coming, but he barely had time to brace himself with his cane before Luvon barrelled into him at full speed. Heâd just barely settled into his temporary room and let out an amused chuckle as his little protege clung tightly to his leg. âHello, my sweet Lulu. I am happy to see you, but youâre shaking like a leaf!â He petted the childâs hair and the shaking only got worse as Luvon buried his face into his robes, and Strum realized the kid was sobbing. Ah, that explained the lack of words of welcome. Most likely overcome with emotion, he would be unable to speak or form words for a while. He just needed some time. That was ok, Strum still had to unpack, and he didnât mind providing comfort. He could get started on the stories and music, though maybe he would avoid the ones with too much violence for now. Several bells passed, and eventually Luvon settled down into his lap. The stories turned into lute practice. He was glad that despite their time apart, the kid had kept up with his studies. Strum was so proud of him, and told him as such, which only seemed to embarrass him, oddly enough. âYou seem preoccupied and not quite like your usual bubbly self today, my child. Would you like this old hrothgar to lend an ear to your troubles? I am always willing to listen.â Nearly half a bell passed without pauseâthough Strum did at some point force a glass of water into Luvonâs hands and bid him to drink and gain some breath back. Now that he was talking again and started up, it was difficult to get him to stop, but Strum was patient. Luvonâs family rarely actually listened to him, so he would do what he could to understand the child.Â
It seemed Luvon suffered from a lot of anxiety and had been working himself up into bouts of panic these last few weeksâabout his safety, from being away for so long, which sat heavily on his conscience. Strum knew he could not make any promises to stay safe or never leave the village again, as this place was stifling to him. He could no longer live here for extended periods of time, and the outside star forever called to him.Â
As the star called to him, he believed it did to Luvon as well. Itâs what inspired him to take Luvon on as a student in the first place. He saw something in him that reminded him of himself. While the other villagers completely spurned those who werenât from here, the child yearned to learn about people outside this village. He was afraid to leave the caves, and was far too young yet to do so anyway, but Strum could tell from the way he lit up as he spoke of other places and cultures, that Luvon wanted to experience and discover these things for himself one day.Â
And one day, Strum would need to have tough conversations with himâabout the sacrifices that come with deciding to leave and pursue his passions and chase curiosity. He would offer to restore his sight, to the best of his abilities. The spells and alchemical procedures are not so easily undone, but if Luvon chooses it, he wonât hesitate to help heal what he can. To leave means to live with the disappointment and possible disgust or ire from the other villagers. It is taboo to leave, and would change Luvonâs relationships forever. He would also need to learn to fight, even as heâd hoped Luvon would never need to use the skills, gentle as his soul is. If he didnât want to become a bard, then he could teach him the moves of a pugilist instead, and how to go onward toward the fighting style of a monk. Or perhaps he would like to learn how to heal? So many possibilities, but he would let Luvon choose. There were so many choices already taken from him, after all.Â
He knew that time marched on and took its toll on his body. He was not as ancient and fragile as Luvon must have thought, young as he is to compare to, but that did not mean his time was unlimited. Due to old injuries, he used a cane. His fur was beginning to gray and wasnât as sleek and shiny as it used to be. He wore spectacles to read. He would continue to travel as long as possible, though, and he could not promise to stay safe, as something could happen to him at any time. There would be no way to guarantee he will be back as often as heâd like, but he did pinky promise to do his best to be cautious. In Strumâs opinion, continuing to live in this village would only make Luvonâs anxiety and worries worse, but the boy was still growing and he couldnât take him from his family. The boyâs parents were already not that happy about how much time their son spent with him, believing that he was putting silly ideas and scary concepts into the childâs head. There is nothing wrong with teaching him what this star has to offer, hmmph! He would come back more often. He would. He would take the mentorship more seriously, especially as it broke his heart to see how much his extended leave affected Luvon. He would watch Luvon grow into his own person, encouraging him into authenticity. To not let this village stomp him down and mold him into some featureless, obedient, lifeless husk. Heâd help him escape, if thatâs what he wished. Just as he escaped so many years ago.
In the meantime, he had some more stories to tell. As he played his lute and Luvon grabbed his own to join in the harmony, his face finally smoothed and free of tension and worry, Strum sang tales of distant lands and couldnât help but be filled with hope.
