s1 of true detective has its own share of misogyny but at the very least, there’s a thread throughout it that not treating the women in your life with respect leads to those women not wanting to be around you. marty consistently views women & girls as either in need of protection or in want of sex rather than as complex people, & the story punishes him for this. maggie leaves him & his daughters barely talk to him & his girlfriends are few & far between. & this doesn’t make him a bad person! he’s the hero of the story & he cares incredibly deeply about them, but until he sees them as people, it’s hard for them to want to be around him. it’s a baseline understanding that misogyny, both systematically & on personal levels, leads to women being miserable.
compare that with s2, which somewhat builds itself around conversations of sexual agency & exploitation, but cannot define a single woman outside of her relationship to men. women are abused by men & must be saved by them; when women help themselves they do so ineffectively; they scream & cry & fuck & even then men know how to do it better. even ani, the main character & the Strong Badass Woman detective, is punished for having sex. she cannot protect herself or process her own sexual trauma (only men can help her do that), & she cannot make good decisions in terms of partners (& it's only fair that men degrade & shame her in response.) the only way she, & any other woman in s2, can be happy is through marriage or motherhood. she expresses nowhere in the show that she wants to be a mother, but the viewer is meant to accept her ending as happy, because she has a baby, so she MUST be. the only women who matter, or who can find any sort of contentment, are the mothers of sons. every child in s2 is a boy because women exist only to raise or fuck them, & have no experience of girlhood at all. you can be happy only if you find a good man, & if you can't, only if you commit yourself to being a good mother to your sons. women can only be happy with men to guide them. & also the mystery is boring to watch because fuck you
#true detective#true detective s2#i didn't like s4 but i would watch it one million times before i ever rewatched s2. hated s2 that much#it was also just weirdly written like the mystery made no sense 😭#spoilers . but when they killed the gay cop one of the characters had a line being like There are a series of tunnels we use underneath the#city & I texted my friend screenshots being like WHAT ARE THEY EVEN TALKING ABOUT? WHAT? WHAT????#at least vince vaughn was hot.#god it's not even like the season failed in terms of the what you act like vs. what you are aspect like that theme was very clear#but i don't careeee about it when you write women like you've never spoken to one in your life#ani is just treated so grossly! by other characters & by the WRITERS like oh my god#like an exercise in patting yourself on the back going We understand women we solved everything & it's like no#you gave her knives & issues & then called her useless that is not solving anything#ALSO OH MY GODDDD can i talk about the stupid ani/ray scene.#this is a woman constantly terrified of SA & distrustful of men why would she not use protection#like how does it make sense at all for her to do that even if she trusted ray like WHAT. you're telling me they used no protection at all#sobbing on the sofa & she immediately got pregnant. god i hate that season#but it's a happy ending for her even though she loses her job & has to raise a baby on her own because That's What Women Are For#it's so stupid. & she doesn't even save the day or expose things in the end it's a male journalist who does it#WHATEVERRRRR i need to go funeral shopping

I think Piper Wright Fallout 4 is one of those characters who's good in theory but not in practice. I was thinking about her as a character in relation to her setting and I genuinely think her archetype would be better suited to the NCR than it is to the Commonwealth.
Which I think comes down to how Bethesda handles their games, environment and attitude wise, as opposed to Black Isle and Obsidian. The West coast has basically recovered. New Vegas is a tourist attraction. The NCR are on a rapid tirade of imperialist expansion that's only achievable because they, as a nation, have recovered from the war and grown from it. If you compare Shady Sands in Fallout 1 to Diamond City in Fallout 4, its kind of funny. Shady Sands started out with decent houses made from dirt, with solid foundation and some of them having actual windows. The average settlement in Bethesda Fallout (like Diamond City or Megaton), meanwhile, are just shanty towns made from tin.
In the Commonwealth's case this is made even more insane by the fact that Fenway Park (where Diamond City is located) is surrounded by mostly intact houses that, with a bit of fixer-uppering, could be lived in relatively normally compared to the tin shacks of Diamond City. I think Megaton gets more of a pass because the Capital Wasteland got nuked to shit, but you get me.
Returning to Piper for a second, let's take a look at her character: she's a spunky, somewhat annoying character who's very invested in the freedom of the press and so forth. She's got a working printing press and everything, which is super impressive considering how run-down the rest of Diamond City is aside from the Valentine Detective Agency signs (seriously, where did they find the materials for those). She runs Publick Occurences solo with her sister, and it's all well and good. Ignoring the witch hunts she sends people on about synths.
And I get it. I think this specific gripe with Piper as a character comes from having played this game for the first time in 2024. The synths don't really hold up as an allegory for anything, and the entire story surrounding them is very "trying to be progressive in 2014". Which is fine, I think it is just a symptom of the era the game came out in, but still.
Piper's character, as a spunky yet annoying journalist who believes the people deserve to know what's going on, would be far better suited in a more developed location on the West coast -- specifically, Freeside or somewhere within the NCR.
I think Piper would suit the Followers of the Apocalypse, for example, serving as an informant to keep them in the know about what's going on between the Strip, the NCR and the regular Freesiders. Plus, having a funny, anarchist-themed newspaper you can receive in-game where she touts her hatred for the Securitron police force is a funny mental image. Equally, I think she'd suit living in Shady Sands -- right at the heart of the NCR's seediest political manouvres as the decisions are made. Imagine her as a journalist who frequently pushes back against the Mojave expansion, for example, and how the NCR is putting too many resources into a lost cause instead of more important things like healthcare or housing. That way, you could still keep her extreme hatred for the upper class in The Stands while making it make more sense within the setting.
Leading on from this, this made me realise how Bethesda also just aren't very deliberate with how they utilise history in their games. Which makes sense, to a certain extent, given how destroyed absolutely everything on the East coast is. But still. It's a little stupid.
The core conflict of New Vegas -- the Legion vs the NCR -- is actually a really deep-cut history reference at its core. The NCR is the Bear, the Legion is the Bull. In mid-19th century California, people watched bears and bulls fight for fun.
There are other, better examples, I'm sure. But I'm British and this is my personal favourite example, so this is what I'm using. History plays such an important part of New Vegas' themes and messaging -- it's a story about how, when, and why humanity needs to move on from the past and look towards the future.
Bethesda Fallout, by comparison, will frequently and shallowly tout "nukes bad" while letting Liberty Prime lob them at Super Mutants, or encouraging players to nuke each other's houses in Fallout 76.
Piper exists partially as a nod to the Boston Herald, and how it's one of the longest-running/most influential newspapers in America. A lot of publishing has its roots within Boston, and I think it's an interesting reference to take.
And I think this is a part of Fallout that Bethesda does get -- a lot of what people do in the post-war world is inspired by what came before. Caesar's Legion and its ideologies come from Edward Sallow not understanding basic Roman history properly and using it to fuel his agenda because it looks cool. The Minutemen are exactly that. The New California Republic are the new US government, right down to the borderline facist intentions and ideologies. I could go on.
And this comes from Fallout being a series about the cyclical nature of violence. "War never changes, but men do through the roads they walk" is the story here. War cannot change if men do not change, because war exists in an endless cycle of violence that can only be broken if man chooses to break it. And they've failed at it so far, right?
And this is where I go back to Piper. Her nod to history isn't as intentional as anything in New Vegas, and I feel like she would have been better served as a character if she was in New Vegas instead. Because her entire character would make more sense if she was living in the more developed and rebuilt towns of the West coast as opposed to a dilapidated shanty town on the East.
I have more thoughts about this but tl;dr Bethesda should really put more effort into making sure their history references and homages make sense to the setting contextually, in the same way that New Vegas does. That game was developed in 18 months and still has far more care put into its historical references than Fallout 4 does. And I love Fallout 4.
#fallout#fallout 4#fallout new vegas#piper wright#fallout meta#fallout 76#FNV#fo4#fo76#piper fallout 4#I wrote this in one go and only barely proofread it so I hope this makes more sense than my last attempt at a fallout meta post

GREEN NERD SHOWDOWN PRELIM BATTLE 2
BASIL FROM THE GREAT MOUSE DETECTIVE VS SLIPPY TOAD FROM STARFOX
PROPAGANDA
BASIL
Hat and overcoat are green. He's heavily based on Sherlock Holmes (in fact, he lives in Holmes' basement)
SLIPPY
He’s a funny frog that’s so infamous for being a walking nerd emoji that he’s often listed as one of the worst characters in all of gaming (by like, bunk gaming journalists and stuff). I like him though because he’s silly and lets you see boss health bars. Aside from arguably Donnie from TMNT, he’s EASILY the poster boy of green nerds. Tails is to Sonic as Slippy is to Star Fox

started watching the Chapter 2 session 0, and right off the bat of Travis's pitch in this, it's like, "Travis just GETS it, huh."
I really love his remark about Journalist and Detective being basically the same but one has a pen and the other has a revolver and marking a difference in how the family would react as "stop asking questions" for the former vs. "keep your nose out of our shit" for the latter

After a particulary devastating use of corruption who put chuuya in a long work stoppage chuuya was bored out of his mind but what really motivated him was a conversation with Dazai Osamu which became a bet.
Spite is one hell of a motivator, it's what powered nakahara chuuya of all peoples to take the law bar exam and acing it.
Mori ougai, ozaki kouyou, Paul Verlaine and hirotsu ryuuro we're supporting in helping him.
But his first client wasn't the mafia or even civilian, it ended up being someone who is blacklisted by all lawyers in Yokohama and away, the agency doctor herself yosano Akiko, he was led on this case by the government.
Yosano Akiko trashed on broad delight a pervert who tried to grope her and as luck would have it , they're was journalist nearby who filmed the scene, it was hard for the agency to find a lawyer so it's how chuuya found himself having to defend his former enemy.
One of Yosano demand to accept him was that she didn't see or heard of boss which he agree to in exchange of making his demand that nor dazai or the agency detective came within the trial.
It ended up being a win and suddendly he find himself having more contact with the agency not only as yosano permanent lawyer but also to bail out the others members out of prison notably in a case when someone managed to have accused the agency linchpin of a crime, which he was ready to refuse when he heard who was his client but he got goaded into it by the trio of menace.
For a bunch of goody two shoes the agency fucker sure have a knack to have trouble with autority, he even had to bail out dazai's new partner.
Talking about the idiot, his worst case and that he would never admit even in his head to be one of the reason why he took the Law exam was that after the fight with the decay of angel even if the agency was cleared of all charge, dazai wasn't free of his legal trouble, he had to defend him so that he didn't get sent back in prison while not incriminating himself and while the break out of meursault was added to dazai's crime.
In the end after a difficult trial while the mackerel was so annoying, he managed to reduce dazai sentence to some years of community service which even if he find the idea of dazai helping grandma cross the street or having to taking out trash hillarious, It was his work in the agency who became his community service.
The agency don't pay well and are annoying but he found himself becomming their official lawyer which cause problem for his role of the lawyer of port mafia and mori corporation, especially when he had trial like motojirou kajii vs yosano akiko and both want him as their lawyer.
Well business is booming but maybe too much is that he end up with all the craziest trial at least it's never boring.

Justice League Canada annual #3: Set in between Issues #68 and #69 of the main justice league canada comic. The Justice League Canada have found themselves trapped in the Anti-Matter Universe. In the preceding few issues, they've escaped from qward and successfully fought off the insane conqueror Annihilus. But now they're proceeding towards the reverse earth of this anti-matter cosmos.
Hoping that they'll finally be able to find their way back to earth from htrae. But before they even have time to search, they find that this planet really is the negative image of earth. It's ruled over by a dictatorial body known as the Crime Syndicate, a body that doesn't take kindly to positive matter beings barging in on their territory. So the Justice League Canada splits up to search for ways back to earth, and they only end up being confronted by the seven members of the crime syndicate.
So the Justice League Canada ends up fighting the Crime Syndicate, an evil parallel to the founding seven members of the Justice League of America way back when. And during the fight, some interesting things occur. But I'll cover that during the segments on the fights themselves.
But in any event, the Justice League Canada successfully manage to subdue the Crime Syndicate. And after defeating them, they finally realize a portal back to earth is hidden on the reverse earth's moon. So while the Crime Syndicate is distracted, the league goes to the moon and take a portal back to earth's moon on the positive matter universe.
But in related bad news: Johnny Quick and Power Ring have followed the Justice League back through the portal. Since they're some of the weakest members of the Crime Syndicate though, the Justice League Canada quickly defeat them and take them to their base in ottawa. There, they'll be under constant supervision. But they will be sort of like members of the Justice League Canada now, I guess.
Meanwhile, the Anti-Monitor and the Monitor have both witnessed these events. And while the Anti-Monitor is actually content with this result (seeing it as a possible first step towards the people of the positive matter world respecting the people of his Anti-Matter Universe), the Monitor sees it as an offense to everything right about the universe. So a new Crisis is brewing, and if the ever expanding portal on earth's moon is any indication, things are going to heat up really soon…
Justice League Canada members:
1. Jemm, Son of Saturn
2. The Question (Vic Sage)
3. William Nielsen
4. Willow/Mantis
5. The Admiral (Sam Heartsea)
6. Booster Gold (Michael Jon Carter)
7. Nubia of Themyscira
8. Green Lantern III (Guy Gardner)
The Crime Syndicate members:
1. Ultraman (Lor-Zod/Kent Clarkson)
2. Owlman (Thomas Wayne Jr.)
3. Superwoman (Bellona of Themyscira/Priscilla Rich)
4. Johnny Quick (Barton Allen)
5. Power Ring I (Harold Jordan)
6. Aresian Barbarian (J'edd J'arkus)
7. Sea King (Alistair Curry)
Battles:
1. Ultraman vs William Nielsen and Willow/Mantis: This is the one fight I think nobody would win. Because Ultraman is a kryptonian, and he's weak to very few things. William and Willow have a lot of strength and skill (certainly enough to hold their ground), but I don't think they have skill enough to defeat Ultraman completely. So I see this one as a very intense fight, but also as a fight that could only end in a tie.
2. Owlman vs The Question: Owlman and The Question are both skilled detectives with plenty of tech to guide them. But Owlman never grew up wanting to be a supervillian. Vic Sage always grew up wanting to be a journalist. In fact, because he's such a skilled investigative journalist, The Question manages to deduce who Owlman is and why he does what he does, all within hours of their first fight. And after that, he begins using his knowledge of Thomas Wayne Jr to get under his skin. He breaks through to the sad ten year old boy inside. He makes Owlman doubt himself. And then he manages to escape back to the positive matter earth with the rest of the league. Because that's the power of The Question.
3. Superwoman vs Nubia: Superwoman is a misandrous slaver who hates practically everyone and everything. Despite this, she's an incredibly skilled warrior. Trained by Circe and by other evil warriors, bellona of themyscira really inherited the gifts of her namesake. Bellona is a goddess renowned for her bloodlust in combat, and superwoman displays that exact same mania and frenzy when she fights, too. But since Nubia is a dignified warrior and positive matter amazon, trained in the finest ways of combat by Mars, this fight would be intense. I can picture some really cool art here.
4. Johnny Quick vs Booster Gold: Johnny Quick and Booster Gold are both very funny characters. Johnny Quick derives all his power from the speed juice constantly coursing through his veins, while Booster Gold gets most of his strength from the tech Kord Industries supplies him with. It'd be a pretty tough fight, but I think Booster could win simply by cutting off johnny's access to his speed juice.
5. Power Ring I (Harold Jordan) vs Green Lantern III (Guy Gardner): Guy Gardner controls his ring using his strong willpower. Harold Jordan lets the ring of volthoom control him, because he's a nervous wreck who has almost no willpower of his own. Besides, volthoom has been consuming what little willpower he does have for years now. Power Ring has a constant fever because of volthoom absorbing his energy, so he'd be a really easy target for Guy Gardner.
6. The Aresian Barbarian vs Jemm, Son of Saturn: J'edd is a barbarian who was trained by ares and his fellow anti-matter aresians to kill anything that moves, to feast on their flesh and bathe in their blood. Meanwhile, J'emm is a proud emperor of the Solar Federation. Born the child of a martian and a saturnian, he was raised a prince and a warrior in the fine saturnian tradition. This would be a fierce battle, and it's hard to predict a winner off the top of my head.
7. The Admiral vs The Sea King: Sam Heartsea is a hydrokinetic demigod, with ancestry tying him to Poseidon, to Dionysus and to the ancient celtic gods. Alistair Curry is just a violent man with a harpoon for a hand who has gills and a telepathic control over fish. Sure, the fight might be narrow. But I can only see Sam winning this fight.

Round 3: Superman and Lois vs iZombie
Superman and Lois: After years of facing supervillains, monsters and alien invaders, the world's most famous superhero, The Man of Steel aka Clark Kent and comic books' famed journalist Lois Lane come face to face with one of their greatest challenges ever -- dealing with being working parents in today's society. Complicating the already daunting job of raising two boys, Clark and Lois worry about whether their sons, Jonathan and Jordan, could inherit their father's Kryptonian superpowers as they grow older. Returning to Smallville to handle some Kent family business, Clark and Lois are reacquainted with Lana Lang and her Fire Chief husband, Kyle Cushing. The adults aren't the only ones rediscovering old friendships in Smallville as the Kent sons are reacquainted with Lana and Kyle's rebellious daughter, Sarah. Of course, there's never a dull moment in the life of a superhero, especially with Lois' father, Gen. Samuel Lane looking for Superman to vanquish a villain or save the day at a moment's notice.
iZombie: When over-achieving medical resident Liv Moore attends a party that turns into a zombie feeding frenzy, she ends up joining the ranks of the living dead. Determined to pass as human despite her pale appearance and newly listless demeanor, Liv forms a plan to resist her drive to consume fresh human brains by taking a job at a coroner's office, where she can secretly snack on the brains of corpses delivered there. Soon discovering that she absorbs the memories of those she feeds on, she finds new purpose by posing as a psychic and working with a detective to help solve their murders.

Small clarification: 'unnatural' or less predictable wording usually flags something as NOT being AI-generated. AI detection looks at how "likely" or "normative" the wording is - and that's context-dependent. It can mean common, simple, predictable language is flagged OR wording that's more 'textbook' or 'academic' in line with subject matter sources a LLM is trained on.
Regardless, it's going to affect ANYONE outside a narrow definition of the wording they expect to find in a particular academic group.
These AI detection methods are basically defunct as soon as they're implemented. Just as people have learned to use GenAI, they can learn to fool AI detection as a necessary step. It's more of a deterrent than an actual safeguard (and any false positive can be life-ruining).
In academic detection software, enhancing 'accuracy' likely means adding other factors - like expected vs unexpected language for grade level, region, cohort, etc. Since submitting work adds it to the database forever (not just the school's database, but the database of tools like Turnitin) I'm sure this is fed back in.
This is likely seen as a 'more reliable' measure than simple wording probability - but it's even more biased and ethically dubious. (ETA: I don't have time rn to delve into whether this is literally or openly happening so take it with a grain of salt.)
The second big thing: it doesn't just affect kids or education. This is going to happen across employment, from 'detecting' AI-generated resumes and cover letters to actual work projects. Marginalised people will cop the most scrutiny, too, whether AI detection is even used or people jump to that conclusion without it.
Working in web content, I've been concerned about the psychological fallout of GenAI for ages. The level of mistrust and uncertainty and doubt around all text, information, photos, videos is going to have an impact we can't even fathom.
Every day, connecting information back to verifiable people and institutions becomes more and more important in my line of work. With true AI detection functionally impossible, the only 'solution' is to lean on the authority and experience of the people behind it.
Of course, this doesn't really confirm the reliability or providence of the content itself. It's just an assumption that an established journalist/public figure/reputable publication is more human and more trustworthy (which creates all kinds of self-perpetuating bias).
It gets worse: the more there's a need to verify the human authority behind content, the more surveillance is required to do it. This is already happening, in that if you publish any kind of content online, you are a Known Human Entity being linked to that content across websites and platforms.
A bit like Captchas, where the endgame is not NEEDING to 'prove you're a human' because Google already knows who you are and is following everything you're doing. Slight tangent, but it comes back around.
If academic institutions, workplaces, etc really want to ensure people aren't using AI to create something - the only way they can actually DO that is constant surveillance. This may mean literal (digital) surveillance to ensure AI tools aren't being used during the process of creating something.
It may mean your school, university, workplace, etc keeps a reference database of YOUR individual work - a lifetime's worth of formal and informal writing - and evaluates any new piece of work based on whether it sounds like YOU specifically.
It may just mean institutions (continue to) evaluate everything you submit against a deeply biased database of expected work, expected resumes and expected cover letters - and if yours is too normative OR not normative enough, you're consistently shafted.
Either that or everyone gives up on detecting it and AI-generated content is entirely normalised. This sounds like a scary prospect, and I'm not advocating for it - but the alternatives required to actually VERIFY human-created content are equally scary.
#replies#sorry I hate using caps for emphasis like this#but tumblr always breaks my italics#surveillance cw#AI#if I had time I'd look into Turnitin's research papers etc claiming they don't have these biases#putting a pin in that for another day#not On The Side Of The AI here#more like we're fucked regardless#a huge overhaul of how we complete and evaluate academic work would help#but it doesn't solve anything when it comes to employment scenarios

Marius' Chronicle 2
27 October 24, Sunday, 6:30 PM (just after sunset).
[In this session, I’m also using oracles and tables from Tourniquet, Veins, and Trey.)
Marius wakes in his haven (studio apartment, Chinatown, just above Diamond Head Bicycles), dresses in jeans, a black button-down, black casual shoes, and a lightweight gray blazer. These clothes are a recent upgrade from the ratty sweats and filthy tennis shoes he had previously. He also puts his loaded Star 9mm in the back of his belt (hidden under his blazer). Thus equipped, he walks downstairs to the street.
Lately, it’s been raining on Oahu with long bouts of humidity during the day and uncomfortably warm nights, but tonight it’s windy and cool. Marius hasn’t fed in two days [Presence 3] and is starting to feel hungry, but Endlicher Street (usually packed with the Chinatown bar crowd from sundown until 2 AM) looks relatively empty. Baitals can only completely satisfy their hunger if they feed off prey with a weight equivalent to theirs [VaitD 22]. His first objective tonight is to locate someone who fits that description; though, he realizes this may take some effort.
Second, he wants to visit the small inner library in the Honolulu Art Museum and continue studying books of early city architecture. The museum is closed at night. So he will have to scale the outside of the building and enter through the old skylight. He broke the lock two weeks ago and has been doing this almost every night since then [using his subterfuge and technology skills to avoid being detected by the night guard and tripping the museum’s silent alarms].
Baitals are deeply intrigued by riddles and mysteries and these traits have become strong in Marius over the years. Being a trained journalist, he has the habit of reading deeply about a place in which he lives. Through this research, he’s become convinced that an early Rosicrucian group, The Society of the Pale Rose, was a front organization for a legion of Baitals in Honolulu during WWII. And, from what little he’s learned about his caste over the years, he knows that, wherever they settle, they create leave archives, secret documents, and other repositories of esoterica—often so cunningly hidden that not even the children of Caine are aware of them. Marius believes that he will come closer to understanding his sire, Mohan, and his own nature if he can uncover such secrets.
[Marius is currently in Chinatown, which means an “old town” hex.] He’s decided not to take the dilapidated green ’98 Civic he bought off a used car lot a few weeks ago. It’s easier to feed when you’re on foot—more opportunities and better access. It will take him about half an hour to walk to the museum (which is also downtown). [Roll a “Hunt for Prey” check vs. Mind (+ survival): 1d10 Roll is 4 + 5 Mind + 2 = 11, success and +1 power bonus on next “Hunt for Prey” check. // Veins roll: journalist.]
While passing the Honolulu Tribune building, Marius sees a large woman with bright red hair come out of a side entrance, step briskly in front of him on the sidewalk, and head in the direction of a Times Market (grocery store), which is the only place open for several blocks at this time of night. She doesn’t notice Marius at all. He thinks, well, she looks promising. Seems like she’s in a hurry to buy groceries after work, but where’s her car? He follows her into the market.
[Marius rolls a sneak check vs. Mind (+ subterfuge) to avoid being spotted: 1d10 Roll is 4 + 5 Mind + 2 = 11, success and +1 power bonus on next sneak roll.] The woman spends 30 minutes shopping in the market, speeds through the self-checkout, and walks back in the direction of the newspaper building. She seems preoccupied and doesn’t notice him. Having a background as a journalist, Marius suddenly realizes what she’s doing. She’s working to a deadline and has therefore gone to the local market for food because she expects to pull an all-nighter. That’s perfect. Plus, there will be far fewer people in the Tribune building, probably just a skeleton crew and janitors on the night shift.
He keeps his distance and tails her back down the street. When she reaches the nondescript side entrance, she unlocks it with a magnetic swipe card and enters without looking around. Marius has to be quick [roll a speed check vs Body (+ Deadly Speed advantage): 1d10 Roll is 7 or 10 + 3 Body = 13, success, +3 power bonus on running checks in the future]. After she goes through, his enhanced speed allows him to catch the door before it shuts. He slips in and quietly moves up the stairs behind her.
She exits on the third floor, moving down a gray-carpeted hallway with heavy utilitarian office doors featuring the names of various editors, writers, and other newspaper employees. Somewhere, there will be a newsroom with people working in it around the clock. But this floor should be quiet. She stops at a door, unlocks it with the same key card, and carries her large paper bag of groceries inside.
He waits a few moments, then walks up and puts an ear to the door. Something is making it vibrate—probably the A / C, which is on even at night, since someone will always be working. He can hear the faint tapping of computer keys, then the crinkle of a plastic wrapper. She must be eating while she works. As an afterthought, he checks the hallway for security cameras. Sloppy. He should have done this first thing. Luckily, he doesn’t see any. That means, the next step should be easy.
He knocks on the door. It takes her a moment to answer. She obviously thinks the building is secure and isn’t expecting anyone, much less a vampire. When she opens the door, he simply uses Dark Strength to give it a shove. The edge of the door catches her right shoulder, knocking her down. And, in that moment, faster than a snake, Marius steps in and pounces, slaking his dark thirst . . .
To be continued.
