I have an idea for a DPxDC. If anyone wants to expand on it, I'd be happy, as I'm more of a reader than a writer. Here's the idea:
Danny goes to Gotham University and studies engineering and physics. At night he plays music as a duo with Ember in various bars/clubs. There is one big difference between Danny's ghost half (Phantom) and his human half (Fanton). Phantom is only into ghosts and Fanton is only into humans. That's the reason why his relationship with Sam ended after a year. Now Phantom is with Ember and Fanton is single. The relationship is a bit rocky and they argue a lot, but Phantom loves Ember. And everything is going reasonably well in Danny's life, but then he meets Cass and Fanton falls in love. And Danny has no idea how to deal with it.

Hello. I've arrizen with more orv x op. Specifically Kim Dokja.
When Dokja first meets Luffy, he's shocked. Sure the shock is mitigated by the Fourth Wall but it's still shocking to see that:
1. He's being suitcase-carried by an obviously burnt Yoo Joonghyuk (from the lightning strike) along with another teenager.
2. The cool, calm, collected, strong, lucky, dumbass swordsman calls the scrawny shit his Captain. Like Zoro was supposed to be the protagonist, wasn't he???
3. He's smiling. Smiling. This bitch almost got executed, but he's smiling?!
Safe to say, Dokja keeps his distance. He's scared of what he can't understand.
He's just waiting for the other shoe to drop. And waiting. And waiting. And waiting. The shoe never drops.
Luffy is as simple as he looks.
When the realisation hits, it's a lot more comforting than he'd want to admit.
Luffy on the other hand doesn't quite understand Kim Dokja either. Luffy understands that Yoo Joonghyuk and Han Sooyoung care a lot about him, he knows Kim Dokja is super strong, but he also knows that every expression, every smile that he puts on is a lie.
Luffy hates that of course. No crewmate of his should ever feel like they gotta lie like this.
Luffy also picks up on the fact that Kim Dokja is to his Companions, what Cass is to the crew. Or more specifically, what Cass would be if Luffy wasn't there or was different, so he treats Dokja like how he treated Cass early on. Being a clingy bastard, incessantly asking him to show off what makes him him.
He includes Kim Dokja as much as he possibly can and with Cass tag teaming on this too, by the end of the first month Kim Dokja was far too deep into the trap that is unconditional love to get out, even when he does eventually realise.
Kim Dokja was very biased when he assumed Zoro would be the protagonist of the book they ended up in. That's obvious enough, seeing as his favourite protagonist of all time is pretty similar to Zoro, even if it's only surface level.
Zoro is steady, Zoro is calm, Zoro is snarky, Zoro is also an insane bastard with a dream greater than his ability to get lost.
So of course he approached. Kim Dokja found it was easy to talk to this kid. Zoro was succinct in his words, sometimes joked, offered sass to the conversation so while Dokja was carrying the conversation, he didn't feel forced to do so. Like with a certain Sunfish bastard—
When Zoro's role as "protagonist" was rendered false, not much changed in his opinion of him. Well, maybe only a little, maybe a little bit of respect that such a strong guy would give up being the Captain. It's unusual to see someone strong settle for second.
...
..
THIRD???
When Dokja found that out he thankfully had already met Cass. Who was already introduced as an "Oracle". And was privy to the ensuing conversation of "I'm not an Oracle, I just know shit I'm not supposed to know".
Of course, Kim Dokja got to the bottom of it by using the Character Profiles. All of them had one, surprisingly, including Cass. Cass who apparently has the attributes:
• [Bloodbound Oracle of the Sun]
• [Dead at Denny's] and
• [Fates little meow-meow]
Kim Dokja would never let himself wonder about the third. But it answered why Cass had modern and future knowledge, they had been isekaied.
Kim Dokja wouldn't have been able to comprehend how Zoro was third otherwise.
Nami, at first is strictly his business partner. He needed to know what the local currency was like, and he admittedly liked having money. He'd scammed people before so it wasn't difficult. In fact it was convenient to fall into a routine of scamming rich people and marines on every island they stepped on.
It was nice to worry about how much money they had than about how much they didn't.
After Whisky Peak, it's hard not to see them planning together, or counting budgets (or pretending to do that while they have their own conversations).
Kim Dokja would underestimate how attached he'd be, and it is yet another pitfall down the slippery slope of wanting to live.
Sanji would dislike him at first. Kim Dokja doesn't eat well, Kim Dokja avoids any discussion that needs to be had about food, all his dietary preferences are told to him by Yoo Joonghyuk, he bullies Sooyoung-swan how dare he!
But Sanji comes to see that Nami is smiling a lot more (even if it is that money-hungry smile of hers). He sees how much Luffy and Cass and Yoo Joonghyuk seem to hover in his vicinity, how even Zoro has started sleeping less just to talk to someone. Sanji notices how loved and loving Kim Dokja is and Sanji also notices how little Kim Dokja cares about himself.
Sanji starts putting small notes in Dokja's pirate lunchbox "Eat well", a smiley face, maybe some errands to keep Dokja on his toes.
He starts talking to him more, doesn't let him drop the conversation as smoothly as he often does.
Kim Dokja is the least scary of the trio to Usopp. He doesn't have a permanent, menacing scowl like Joonghyuk, or an evil grin like Sooyoung. Compared to those two Kim Dokja's expressions are surprisingly lackluster.
So Usopp does what he does best and tells stories. Sure are they framed as his own courageous exploits? Yes, but they're still stories, and Kim Dokja is a reader at heart.
Kim Dokja listens. He doesn't have exaggerated reactions like Luffy or Chopper, doesn't roll his eyes like Nami sometimes does.
Even after Usopp warms up to the other two, Kim Dokja will remain the one he goes to when he wants to tell his stories.
When Chopper first meets Kim Dokja, he thinks Kim Dokja is weird. He always has such a distant look, that only slightly falters when talking to his crew.
Kureha thinks he's stupid. She is concerned, he doesn't have enough fat on his bones and too much muscle. She gives Sanji and Yoo Joonghyuk a proper diet to help with that.
Once Chopper becomes part of the crew, he's met with the biggest challenge he'll ever face. How to make Kim Dokja not only not kill himself, but to not want to kill himself.
Chopper is Kim Dokja's doctor. Maybe even the first one to care.
When Kim Dokja meets Robin, he feels as if he's found a kindred spirit, a fellow reader, another person with a past they refuse to disclose. Kim Dokja doesn't have a problem with that.
Robin is like him, but she's also not. They complement each other, but they aren't the same.
Kim Dokja knows that Nico Robin is not like Miss All Sunday, that role was a mask, not her true self.
And Robin knows that Kim Dokja is hiding himself from everyone on board. She doesn't push, she doesn't prod. She waits and enjoys the fact that he does the same.
They uncover each other's personalities by just being there, by just existing. And it is refreshing for both of them
In Skypeia, he spends most of his time with her.
They talk and they study and they find the Poneglyph together and they meet Enel together.
Dokja is the closest to Robin than any of the other Strawhats.
Until Water 7.
Until Enies Lobby.
Never have the words "I want to die" saddened him so much. Never have the words "I want to live" shaken him in such a way. When Nico Robin said "Take me away from her, take me with you." He listened.
*claps hands* More Omniscient Oracle's Odyssey!
No one ever meets Luffy without their worldview changing just a little. It's just a fact of the world and Kim Dokja is no exception to that
But besides that, he's just a really simple guy
Kim Dokja is to his companions what Cass would be if they had something like the Fourth Wall themself. Something to keep the lines between fiction and reality separate and clear cut. Cass ends up disregarding that line early on, throwing it out. Kim Dokja clings to it
So Luffy and Cass really just have to tag team bully him with so much love and affection he has the give for a moment. And it would only get easier from there
Zoro is also a simple guy. But he's simple in a way Kim Dokja understands. A typical web novel protagonist than Luffy, who is very much a shonen protagonist.
Zoro is familiar to Dokja in that way, and Dokja prefers that far more to dealing with the unfamiliar
I also find it incredibly funny that Kim Dokja attributes Zoro not being First Mate to Cass, when in reality, if Cass wasn't there, there wouldn't be a First Mate
When Kim Dokja uses [Character Profile] on Cass, he probably sees more than just that. Probably including things Cass doesn't even know yet
Other things Kim Dokja would be privy to would be; Cass birth name before being isekai's, the fact that Cass actually has prophetic powers without the isekai knowledge and there'd probably be a couple more attributes that will not be discussed for spoiler reasons
Also love Cass being called Fate's little meow meow. It's great
Part of me wants Kim Dokja to talk to Cass, isekai to reverse isekai protag, but he won't. Because he's Kim Dokja. Which means that Cass will be the one who eventually has to do so instead (which will sure as shit be a doozy)
Nami and Kim Dokja are in charge of the money. It was something that Cass was more than happy to hand over
The two have their fun scamming people and getting money because they both like it. And they both have Cass's more than substantial savings to fall back on as well, which Cass is more than happy to hand over
Getting sent to One Piece/An Oracle's Odyssey is a very slippery slope for Kim Dokja me thinks, because for all the cast are "characters" they are not from any story Kim Dokja has read. He has no preconceived expectations and it makes it very easy to view them as real people compared to everyone else
Sanji 🤝 Cass 🤝 Kim Dokja
Being weird about food and self destructive w/ daddy issues
Sanji takes a hot second to warm up to him but once he does, he starts treating him like Cass, at least in regards to food.
(I love how treating Kim Dokja like Cass is the Strawhats go to for dealing with Kim Dokja. Really highlights how similar the two can be)
That is to say, he makes sure Kim Dokja eats enough and always attends meals and doesn't let him skip out
After all, no one goes hungry with Sanji in the kitchen
Usopp gets entrapped with Kim Dokja's 'normal guy' charms and Kim Dokja gets entrapped by Usopp's stories
Because, really, the way to Kim Dokja's heart is stories and he's always down to listen no matter how they are framed
Poor Chopper having to deal with Kim Dokja's suicidal tendencies
Good thing he's not alone in the matter
And Robin.
She's similar enough that Kim Dokja understand her, but different enough that she doesn't get his scorn like Cass does in the beginning. This allows them a quiet sort of friendship and understanding they don't get with anyone else
It's nice
And then Kim Dokja witnesses her 'I want to live' speech and there is no way he's walking away from there unshaken

I, T and X <333
Thanks for the ask bestie, this was very fun!!
I - Has tumblr caused you to stop liking any fandoms, if so, which and why
BBC Sherlock. I really wanted to watch this show when it was all over tumblr and all my friends were watching it back in like 2014, but I never got around to it. Eventually, people stepped back and were like "actually, so much about this show sucks so much", and I was just kinda glad I'd never actually watched it yet and now I won't. If I want Sherlock content, tbh, I'll probably just rewatch "Elementary, Dear Data" from Star Trek: TNG. Or finally finish the Enola Holmes stuff.
T - Do you have any hard and fast headcanons that you will die defending, about anything at all (gender identity, sexual or romantic orientation, extended family, sexual preferences like top/bottom/switch, relationship with poetry, seriously anything)
Duke Thomas cannot make direct eye contact with people. It gives him a splitting headache. Since eyes both absorb and reflect light, looking directly at someone's eyes creates a sort of feedback loop of light beams for him.
Cass is, in all actuality, older than Jason. However, because there is some ambiguity about her precise age, both of them frequently insist they are the older sibling of the two. They could very easily confirm who is older; they both refuse because they don't want to be wrong.
Steph is more of the common sense in the batfam than people give her credit for. Don't get me wrong, she is far from normal (she is vigilante, she grew up in Gotham), but she is the one with the wherewithal to, idk, solve her problems by actually talking to people. She's clever and witty and quick on her feet and actually some really good and really practical people skills.
Duke and Jason are both functionally immortal for different reasons. (Also, they are good brothers and DC needs to bring back the two of them getting to interact).
Tim doesn't call Bruce "dad" and probably never will. Not because he doesn't see Bruce as his parent, but because "dad" has some very complex connotations for him and he doesn't want to apply those to Bruce. More specifically, because good batdad is canon to me, Bruce is better than what "dad" means to him. (It’s also important to me that Jack does try to be a father to Tim and does love him. But loving your kid is not always enough. Sometimes you still hurt them).
There's definitely something I'm forgetting that I'm even more die hard about, but this is already more than I intended on writing for this one 😂 needless to say this is a fun question. (Also maybe putting this out will kickstart me writing the fics I have planned based on 3 of these)
X - top 5-10 characters who are yoUR PRECIOUS BABIES AND YOU WILL DIE DEFENDING THEM
Tried very hard not to just put every single batkid on this list but know that I would go to war for any of them I love them all so much.
In no particular order
1. Jason Todd -- listen, do I think his philosophy on crime should be applied to the real world? No, absolutely not. Has he done anything wrong ever? Also no.
2. Duke Thomas (bonus: the whole We Are Robin crew) -- if you hate Duke Thomas, meet me in Denny's parking lot. Something is clearly wrong with you and I will right it via blunt force trauma /j.
3. Tim Drake -- Catch me untangling the mess that is his fanon and canon characterizations and weaving a beautiful tapestry out of it. I see so many wrong interpretations about him and I am tired. Very carefully sorting out what should and shouldn't be kept from both fanon and canon every time I write him.
4. Cassandra Cain -- she has done nothing wrong ever and she deserves to be Batman. my favorite weirdgirl ever <3
5. Trevor Belmont -- my wife /p just introduced me to Castlevania and I did not expect to love it this much. Trevor is my babygirl and I would die for him.
6. Sypha -- I love her soooo much and I am dreading any potential romantic arcs to come about since she's the female lead because I really don't think she needs it. Please let her be cool af and single and not ruined in favor of the inevitable contrived romance, oh god.
7. Rise!Mikey -- I started my dive into tmnt content with Rise and then I tried to go back and watch 2012 because people said it was also good but they were so mean to Mikey 😭 I couldn't do it. He is like a squeaky toy to me.
8. Rise!Donnie -- I am captivated by his autism swag. Enough said. (Him and Mikey as a brother duo is so precious to me).
9. Razer -- Watch Green Lantern: The Animated Series if you haven't already. Do it. I promise you will not regret it. I won't say anything because spoilers but I have so much to say.
10. Talia al Ghul -- I am taking a knife to canon and carving out the parts I don't like because she is a good mom, goddammit!
Bonus: Koriand'r. I haven't read enough comics to know much about her, but I respect woman juice everyday for my favorite 6+ ft buff alien woman. (She should get to be huge and strong and I will fight for that).

Dear @Hellyeahheroes, @ubernegro, @farsight-the-char, and many others
Why did you do this? Why did you constantly target these writers with personal attacks? What made you think ANY of this character assassination was acceptable?
The way you targeted Dan Slott, Tom King, Donny Cates, Jonathan Hickman, Ed Brisson, Matthew Rosenburg, Dennis Hopeless, Grant Morrison, Jason Aaron, Brian Micheal Bendis, Adam Glass, Tom Taylor, Scott Snyder, James Tynion IV, Joshua Williamson was as "creeps", "perverts", "bigots", "homophobes", "transphobes", "eugenists", "misogynists", "antisemites", "fascist sympathizers", "closeted Neo-Nazis" and "hacks" was wrong and inexcusable!
They are not, never have been and never will be "creeps", "perverts", "bigots", "homophobes", "transphobes", "eugenists", "misogynists", "antisemites", "fascist sympathizers", "closeted Neo-Nazis" or "hacks"!
After all, you only ever hate-skimmed their work all because of an old, intense parasocial hatred you've held against these creators way before they produced any work whatsoever.
Why? What did they do to you? Did they hurt you? How did they hurt you?
Even if they did harm you or ruin your lives, then I'm sorry. However, it still doesn't give you the right to wish harm upon them or send them death threats!
(No, Dan Slott, Brian Michael Bendis and Donny Cates never secretly ghost-wrote/co-wrote One More Day! No. Jonathan Hickman, Matthew Rosenburg, Ed Brisson and Jason Aaron never ghost-wrote/co-wrote Avengers Academy: Arena or Avengers Undercover! And no, Scott Snyder, James Tynion IV and Joshua Williamson never ghost-wrote/co-wrote Robin: One Year Later!)
Seriously, what made you think that these creators are all Elon Musk 1%-ter multi-millionaires who are allowed to do whatever they want with zero editorial oversight? That these are Power Ranger villains who tore-up your writing job forums to ruin your lives? That these are white power Neo-Nazis holding the Big Two in the palm of their hands?
Understand this: Cass loosing fights or not being featured in a storyline doesn't mean the writer/s hate her; the Academy X kids being scolded by adults or not being the focus of an X-Men story doesn't mean the writer/s hate them; Peter having another love-interest or MJ having another job doesn't mean the writer/s hate the marriage. Portrayal =/=endorsement! And then there's hating-reading all X-Men, Spider-Man and modern Cass Cain/Batgirl stories (Example: Fall Of X/House Of X. Hickman's X-Men run. Slott's Spider-Man run, Batgirls. Snyder, Tynion, Hill and Williamson's BatFam works). Deciding that you must a hate story before you even read it or gave it a chance, thinking every single thing in a story was motivated by the writers' purest, most nastiest form of malice possible, believing that all these writers and stories must suffer because of few horrible storylines (OMD, R:OYL, AA:A, AU) that happened YEARS AGO.
Not only do you have no idea how comic companies works but you have the most appalling media illiteracy I have ever seen in human being. No wonder you, CinemaSins, Mr Plinkett and Lily Orchard deserve each other. If you so desperately want to become comic writers, screenplay writers, book authors, ect. Learn about four important things: Respect, understanding, empathy and humility. I promise, it helps.
@Majingojira How dare you defend such toxicity! The way you excused HYH and others' smearing of creators by using the works of Linkara, Stephanie Sterling, MST3K as "examples" was nothing but baffling gaslighting! False equivalences! What they did was not the same as snarky jokes and B-movie riffing but pure hyperbolic attacks against innocent creators (just trying to make a living in a not-so wealthy job) by painting them as the most evil, most horrible people ever on the same level as literal Gamergaters/Comicsgaters. And in turn, this ends up creating an atmosphere that leads more toxic, more unhinged users to send them death threats! Let me ask you this: If/when HYH, Ubernegro and other end up harming these creators in the real world, how long will you defend them? How will you excuse their actions?
To any comic book fans, nerds or other people reading this: We must be better then this.
Public Service Announcement: Please, stay away away from HellYeahHeroes, Ubernegro, Chadfarsight*, KK4EverStuff, and Cohore.
*I'm aware Chadfaresight doesn't speak to HellYeahHeroes anymore but she's still responsible for spewing the very same toxicity.
HellYeahHeroes/HellYeahTeenSuperHeroes, Ubernegro, Chadfarsight, Cohore and others are the most vile, most pettiest, most hateful people who have no right to call themselves "comic fans".
[Trigger warning for screencaps in the links] They will personally target comic writers using hyperbolic, personal attacks on them: Disgusting insults, making horrible assumptions of them like calling them "Hacks" multiple times, along with "Pussys", "eugenists", "homophobes", "perverts", "mysoginysts", "sex offenders", "cowards", "rape apologists", "fascist sympathizers", "Nazi apologists", "dog f***ers", telling them to "lick goats" and more.
The way they talk about writers like Jason Aaron, Jonathan Hickman, Ed Brisson, Matthew Rosenburg, Dan Slott, Donny Cates, Brian Michael Bendis, James Tynion IV, Scott Snyder, Joshua Williamson and others, it's clear that they hate them solely as people. In fact, they have held a deep personal hatred for them WAY before they read any of their works. Yet they will happily mask what is clearly a bloody vendetta against people ,who never harmed them, under a smokescreen of "criticising crappy writing" and wanting their favourite characters "treated with respect".
KK4EverStuff has gone on to send death threats and wish harm upon creators, it's very possible HellYeahHeroes, Ubernegro, Cohore and Chadfarisght have done so too.
Please, report and block them. They are the most hate-filled toxic people to ever exist in the comic fandom.
Eventually, My friend Samasmith23 and I bumped into @Majingojira and told him HellYeahHeroes and co.'s behaviour since he is their friend. Because of his more chilled, open-minded attitude, we thought he would listen to us and condemn this behaviour but instead...
...he just kept shifting the goalposts; using whataboutisms: Like "Oh, HYH doesn't talk about comics anymore", "KK isn't a member of our group", "That was old stuff", "he (Samasmith) should hold SJBattleAngel to a similar standard", "Screencaps as ammunition is a C*micsgate tactic" and others.
He then suggested that I "fabricated" the screenshots.
But worst of all?
He made excuses for their abhorrent behaviour towards creators. He dismissed our calls for acountability as "tone-policing", being "puritanical", operating under "Tumblr Morality" ect.
He even excused HYH and co's attacking of comic writers by saying: "Complaining about insults towards creators is rich when creators themselves are generally okay with its existence. Just don't do it to their face."
NO.
Calling for innocent creators to be fired is NEVER "okay"!
Telling them to "lick goats" is NEVER "okay"!
Attacking them as "perverts", "eugenists", "fascism apologists" is NEVER "okay"!
Encouuraging harrasment against them NEVER, NEVER "okay"!
Sending them literal death threats is NEVER, NEVER, NEVER "okay"!
Majingojira turns a blind eye to toxic fan harassment and, by doing so, enables it. Stay away from him.
I've wrote to multiple comic/nerd/fandom blogs on Tumblr, telling them about HellYeahHeroes's and his friend's toxicity; asking them to shame this sort of behaviour. But most never reply back. They probably think I'm some sort of "troll" trying to "start drama". And I don't blame them, HellYeahHeroes, Majingojira, Ubernegro and others are some of the most beloved, well-respected comics/social justice bloggers on this website, I understand looking up to someone thinking they could never do any wrong. I know because I was once one of those people.
You know, this takes a toll on my mental health: Trying to tell people that some of the most revered members of our communities are actually horrible pieces of work, but they don't believe you. It's like being trapped in a room all alone, with no door. You scream the truth at the walls, hoping a door will appear. But it never does, and you're stuck forever with no-one to hear your cries. And it hurts. This pain of never being believed.
I hope you all understand.
I just want our community to be safe and healthy. Please, believe me.
Dear @Hellyeahheroes, @ubernegro, @farsight-the-char @Cohore,
The way you targeted and demonized creators like Dan Slott, Tom King, Donny Cates, Jonathan Hickman, Ed Brisson, Matthew Rosenburg, Grant Morrison, Jason Aaron, Brian Micheal Bendis, Adam Glass, Tom Taylor, Scott Snyder, James Tynion IV, Joshua Williamson, Rian Johnson, Neil Druckman was just disgusting and horrible. You have every right to dislike their work but to personally attack and vilify them is unacceptable! They are not "misogynists", they are not "creeps", "they are not "racists", they are not "antisemites", they are not "eugenists", they are not "fascist sympathizers", they are not "Nazi apologists", they are not "closeted Neo-Nazis" but most of all: They are not "hacks!"
To @Hellyeahheroes, @ubernegro, @farsight-the-char, @Cohore,: Seeing your disturbing parasoical hatred of creators like Slott, King, Cates, Hickman, Brisson, Rosenburg, Aaron, Bendis, Snyder, Tynion Williamson, it's clear that outside of comics, way before you read any of their work you've always held a personal vendetta against them as people.
Why? Did they personally hurt you or your loved ones? Did they ruin your lives? Even if they did, that gives you no right to email them countless death threats!
I don't know what you think but personally attacking these writers and sending them death threats will not magically undo the likes of One More Day, Robin: One Year Later, Avengers Academy: Arena, Avengers Undercover, Heroes In Crisis! No! Your actions are the very reason people see nerd fandom as a toxic cesspool of bullying and entitlement. And you're just proving them right!
Apologise, do better or leave.
Tell Lily Orchard, CinemaSins and Mr. Plinkett I said hi.

Part Two
You’re still in shock as you leave Dennis and Jax at a table outside and go in and order your coffees, holding the $20 that Dennis insisted you pay with. Your brain is overloading because you don’t know how you ended up here, using Jax as an excuse to basically throw yourself at this poor guy. You know Dennis is just being nice—it’s just coffee, after all, and he probably just wants to get to know Jax a little better and ask you some questions about him before he brings him home. You need to pull yourself together and start acting professional instead of asking a client personal questions about his dating life and telling him he’s hot. What the fuck were you even thinking?
“Who’s the beefcake?” the cafe owner, Cassie, asks from behind the counter. She waggles her eyebrows at you and you shake your head.
You’ve been coming to the cafe at least once a day since you started working at the shelter and Cassie has become one of your good friends. She’s also a major cat lady and has adopted three of your kitties. She might know more about your life than even Mal does, and she clocked Dennis the second you sat him outside.
“Just a client, Cass,” you say.
“Well he’s a hot client,” she replies. “He’s got that whole sexy nerd thing going on.”
“He’s adopting Jax,” you say and you can’t help the dreamy smile that spreads across your face. Cassie notices because of course she does.
‘Oh, so you’re in love in love.”
“I am not,” you snap. “I don’t even know him.”
“Sweetie, with a body like that, what else is there to know? And he’s adopting your baby boy? I know you’re thinking about it. Don’t even try to lie to me.”
“Maybe,” you admit. “But I can’t just, like, ask him out.”
“Why the fuck not?”
“Because… I- I don’t know. He’s obviously not interested.”
“He’s been staring at you with his damn mouth open the entire time you’ve been in here, sweetie. I think he’s more than interested.”
“He probably just wants his coffee,” you reply.
“He’s thirsty for something,” Cassie says, “that’s for sure.”
The man waiting in line behind you clears his throat impatiently and Cassie scowls at him before getting your coffees. You hand her the $20 but she refuses.
“You’re not paying today,” she says. “It’s for good luck.”
You roll your eyes, knowing it’s pointless to argue with her when she’s got her mind set on something, so you pocket the $20 and grab the coffees. When you turn around, you see Dennis focused on Jax, not you. Of course Cassie was exaggerating, you think to yourself as you walk towards the patio. You hand Dennis his coffee and the $20 back.
“On the house today,” you say. “The owner is a friend.”
“You can, uh, just keep it,” Dennis says, and you furrow your brows at him.
“For what?” you ask.
“I- uh, I dunno. Next time?” He scratches the nape of his neck and shakes his head. “I’m sorry, I just… uh…”
You wait for him to say something else but he doesn’t finish. He turns his focus to Jax and it’s like he wants to pretend you’re not there. You need to fill the silence, so you just start talking—telling him every possible thing he could ever want to know about Jax and what you would recommend for when he takes Jax home. He barely looks at you the entire time, just quick glances out of the corner of his eye, and you feel so incredibly stupid that you thought even for a second that he might be interested. You’d even entertained the idea of asking him out on an actual date? Are you crazy? What the hell has gotten into you?
Dennis clears his throat and you think you must have been rambling on too long.
“Sorry,” you say. “Too much information?”
“No, not at all. I just… I was wondering if you’re working on Saturday? Like, if you’ll be there when I take him home?”
“I’m always working,” you reply. “I don’t really have much of a life outside work, honestly. It’s pretty sad.”
Dennis gives you a tiny smile. “Same. I mean, since the divorce…” He trails off and shakes his head and mumbles something under his breath that you don’t quite catch. “Sorry, I’m sure you don’t want to hear my sob story.”
You would actually very much like to hear it and anything else he wants to tell you about himself but you just nod. “You don’t have to tell me anything you’re not comfortable with, Dennis.”
You see his leg bouncing and you want to reach out your hand to still it, to calm him and feel the corded muscle underneath the fabric of his pants. You don’t, of course, because that would be insane and you have to remind yourself that you are not the crazy, clingy, needy person that your ex convinced you you are. He takes a deep breath and he’s about to speak when your phone rings—Mal’s ringtone—and you remember you’ve got dinner plans with her.
“Shit,” you say. “Sorry, I have to take this.”
“Where the fuck are you?” Mal asks, and you can hear the bustling restaurant sounds in the background. “We were supposed to get drinks at 6.”
“I know, I just…” You look up at Dennis and he turns his head quickly to Jax, who is very much enjoying the head scratches Dennis is giving him. “I got caught up at work. I’ll be there soon.”
“I’m starting without you,” she says and hangs up.
“I’m so sorry, Dennis. I totally forgot that I’m supposed to meet my roommate for dinner. I have to go.”
“No,” he says. “It’s my fault for keeping you. We were just supposed to go for a quick walk and I’m taking up too much of your time.”
You smile at him. “Hey, coffee was my idea, remember? I’m the idiot who forgot I had plans.”
He speaks low, down into his lap, and you almost can’t hear him when he says, “I’ll get out of your hair.”
“I’m really sorry about this. I was… this was nice. And I’ll see you on Saturday, yeah? For the big day?”
He gives you a smile but it doesn’t reach his eyes. “Yeah, ok. See you then.” He turns to Jax with enthusiasm and tells him, “You too, buddy. I’m gonna get the house all set up for you.”
Watching the two of them together almost makes you lose it. You feel like you could cry happy tears seeing Jax find his person after all this time, but it’s something else, too. You’re really going to miss him, and it’s only just occurred to you that you won’t get to see him every day anymore.
“What’s wrong?” Dennis asks. “Did I do something?”
You realize you’ve let a tear slip out and you wipe it away.
“I’m fine,” you say. “I’m just… I’m gonna miss him.” You feel your cheeks heating up with embarrassment and you sniffle and shake your head. “I should be used to this by now. I don’t know why I’m crying. I’m such a fucking mess. This is… embarrassing.”
“Well,” Dennis says, shifting uncomfortably in his chair. “You’re, uh, you’re welcome to come see him any time you want to.”
You know he doesn’t mean it, that he’s just saying it to make you feel better. After all, Jax is his now (or will be in a few days). He’s going off to start a happy new life with Dennis and he doesn’t need you anymore. You’d just be an imposition, an interruption, an intruder—someone for Dennis to tolerate for a little while until he can politely kick you out of his house and go on living his life.
“Thanks,” you say. “That’s sweet of you to say.”
“I mean it,” Dennis says, and his tone is dead serious. “Anytime.”
You still don’t believe him, but you appreciate his kindness.
“I gotta get Jax back,” you say. “But you can come by any time after 10 on Saturday.”
“I’ll see you at 10:01 then,” he replies.
You laugh as you take Jax’s leash from Dennis’s hand, and when your fingers brush against his, you feel a spark shoot through you, leaving the hairs on your arm standing up straight. You can’t look at him. You’re so fucking touch-starved that just that one brief moment is enough to have your desperation written all over your face. He sees it, though. You know he does, because when you finally look at him, he’s flushed bright pink up to his ears. You’re so fucking pathetic that you’ve managed to embarrass him. You’ve got to get the fuck out of there.
“I- I, uh, I gotta go. I’ll see you Saturday,” you stammer, and you grab Jax and double-time it back to the shelter to put him away for the night.
By the time you make it to the restaurant to meet Mal, you’re an hour late and she’s three martinis in and flirting with some hipster at the bar next to her.
“I’m so sorry,” you say as you rush over to her.
“Don’t be.” She’s wearing her naughty drunk smile and you know you haven’t seen the last of the guy next to her. “I made a friend. But I’m fucking starving so can we eat?” She turns to her friend and puts her hand on his shoulder. “Call me,” she purrs, and hops down off her stool, waltzing over to the hostess without a backward glance.
Mal makes it look so easy. All she has to do is bat her eyelashes at a guy and he’s a goner. Mr. Hipster probably asked her out before she said two words to him, but you… you can’t even manage to make it through coffee without making a complete ass of yourself. After the hostess guides you to your table, you plop down in the booth opposite Mal and put your head in your hands.
“What’s wrong?” she asks.
“I’m just… I’m so fucking sick of being me. I wish I could be you for a day.”
“What the fuck are you talking about? Why? What happened?”
You sigh and grab her martini glass, taking a big sip before returning it to her. “There’s this guy…”
“Oh my god, fucking finally,” she says. “Show me.”
“I don’t have any pictures. He’s just a client. He’s the one adopting Jax.”
She whips her phone out. “Name?”
“Dennis Baker.”
“Hmm, ok. Lots of Dennis Bakers.” She hands you her phone with the Facebook search results open. “Find him.”
You hadn’t let yourself look for him on socials. You’d thought about it a few times, but every time you almost sought him out, you’d hear Brad’s voice in your head: crazy, clingy, needy, desperate. But now Mal is forcing your hand, and when you see his profile, you click on it and smile. His profile pic is very him—glasses slightly crooked, awkward smile, same fucking polo shirt and khakis he always wears that do nothing to hide the body he’s got underneath it all. You hand her the phone back and she laughs.
“This is the guy you’re spazzing about?”
“What?” you say, slightly offended on Dennis’s behalf. “He’s cute.”
Mal considers him for a moment. “Ok, I kind of see it. He looks like a total dork, but that bod…”
“You have no idea.”
“Ok, so what happened that’s got you all turned around?” she asks, setting her phone down on the table. “I mean, no offense, but this guy doesn’t look like he’s turning women away at the door.”
You sigh. “He came by to see Jax this afternoon and I asked him for coffee-”
“Wait, you asked him?” Mal is beaming as she looks at you over the top of her menu. “I’m so proud of you!”
“Well don’t be, because I was totally awkward, and I’m pretty sure once he gets Jax on Saturday he’s never going to talk to me again.”
Mal rolls her eyes. “You’re doing it again.”
“I’m serious, Mal. It was bad.”
“First of all, I’m sure it wasn’t. Second of all, he wouldn’t have gone with you if he wasn’t into you.”
You shake your head. “He was just being nice. I’m sure he just wanted to know more about Jax before he takes him home, and then my pathetic brain turned it into a date even though it totally wasn’t at all.”
“I really hate that you do this,” Mal says. “You always fucking do this. I don’t know why you can’t just accept the fact that you’re gorgeous and sweet and funny and that any guy would be lucky to have coffee with you. Brad really did a number on you. I swear to God if I ever see that fucker again they’ll be cleaning his teeth off the floor.”
“Well as much as I’d love to see that, it doesn’t change the fact that Dennis isn’t interested.”
“Bullshit he’s not. What did he actually say?”
“Not much,” you reply. “I was rambling on about Jax and he barely got a chance to say anything. I mean, Cassie said he was staring at me but I think she was just saying that to make me feel better.”
Mal scoffs. “Cassie has never in her life said anything just to make someone feel better.”
You laugh because she’s not entirely wrong, but still—if Dennis liked you, he certainly wasn’t showing it. When the waiter comes by, you both place your drink and dinner orders before Mal picks up her phone and resumes scrolling through Dennis’s pictures.
“There’s not much here,” she says. “Kind of a red flag, honestly.”
“He just got divorced a couple months ago,” you reply. “He probably deleted a bunch of shit.”
“He got kids?” she asks, and you shake your head no. “Well then he’s probably lonely as fuck. I bet you a million dollars that if you asked him out to dinner, he’d say yes.”
You shake your head vigorously. “I can’t do that.”
“Why not? What’s the worst that can happen? He says no? Then fuck it and move on.”
“That’s not the worst thing that could happen,” you mumble.
“Then what, then, because I really don’t understand what you’re so afraid of.”
You’re grateful when your cocktail arrives and after taking a big sip, you decide to tell Mal the truth.
“I’m scared of, you know, being with someone again.”
“What, like sex?”
You nod. “I just… I feel like, if he does actually like me and we went out then he’s obviously going to want… you know…”
“To fuck you. Yes. I would think so.”
“I’m just not ready.”
Mal sighs. “It’s been almost a year, sweetie. What the fuck is going on with you? Is there something you’re not telling me?”
There’s so much you haven’t told her and you still can’t bring yourself to go into details but you know you have to give her a little something, if only so any of this makes sense to her.
“I just feel gross. I hate my fucking body. I hate so many things about it and I just… the idea of someone else seeing it makes me sick. I get so anxious even thinking about it. So why the fuck would I go out with him if I’m just going to end up disappointing him?”
Mal reaches across the table and takes your hand and you feel the tears start to well in your eyes.
“There is nothing wrong with your body. I’ve seen you naked, you idiot. You’re fucking hot. Where is this coming from?”
You sniffle and wipe your eyes. “You know where.”
“What the fuck did that asshole say to you?”
“I don’t want to talk about it, Mal. Please don’t make me talk about it.”
She lets go of your hand and takes a sip of her drink. “Fine. I won’t make you. But just know that whatever it was, he’s wrong.”
“Can we talk about something else now?” you ask.
“Of course, but let me just say one last thing. This guy… he might surprise you. I mean, he’s divorced. He might want to take things slow, too. Not every guy wants to fuck on the first date.”
“Just the guys you date,” you reply, and she gives you a wicked smile.
“Yeah, but if I didn’t want to fuck on the first date, most of them would be willing to wait. And something tells me that this Dennis guy would be willing to wait for you. So promise me one thing. I’m not going to pressure you to ask him out, but if he asks you, I want you to say yes.”
You take a deep breath and release it as your food comes. “I will,” you say. “I promise.”
***
Dennis pulls up to his old house Thursday morning before work dreading having to deal with his ex, but he made a promise and he keeps his promises. It feels strange to ring the doorbell to his own home—the home that he paid for and which he should have kept in the divorce if he wasn’t such a fucking pushover. But he didn’t want to fight over money and assets and all of that. By the end, he just wanted to get it over with. He couldn’t stand one more day of her toxicity and constant degradation, his days filled with nothing but her insults and cruelty. In the final weeks of his marriage, he felt more alone than he does now as a single man.
Dennis grips his toolbox tightly as his ex-wife opens the door in her robe, hair all messed up and a smug smile on her face.
“You’re late,” she says.
“Sorry,” he apologizes, even though he’s right on time. “So, uh, what’s the problem?”
“Same shit. It’s not draining right. Just take care of it, will you? I have shit to do.”
Dennis hears a man’s voice call out from upstairs—from the bedroom, his bedroom. “Who’s that, babe?” the man asks.
“No one important,” she calls out to him, smiling at Dennis as she twirls a strand of hair around her finger.
“Yeah, uh, so I’ll just… take a look at it then.”
Dennis heads straight to the kitchen with his head down, not wanting to give his ex the satisfaction of seeing the heat blooming on his cheeks. He knows she did this on purpose, that this is what she wanted. He wouldn’t be shocked to find that there’s not actually anything wrong with the dishwasher (although there is). He’s halfway done fixing it when he hears the thunk thunk thunk of the headboard on the wall upstairs, the stranger in his bed moaning and his ex-wife shouting all sorts of filth as he fucks her.
“You fuck me so good, baby. Yeah, just like that. God I love your fucking cock. Feels so good.”
Dennis tries to drown out her sounds by turning on the tv in the kitchen but he’s heard enough already—enough to bring him right back to that dark place he used to live in. He hears her voice in his ear.
You have a bad penis, Dennis. All that cock and no idea what to do with it. You’ll never be able to fuck me right. You’re the worst I’ve ever had. Don’t kiss me. Don’t touch me. You disgust me.
Dennis leaves the dishwasher job unfinished as he walks out the door and slams it behind him. He knows she’ll laugh when she sees he didn’t finish, probably make some joke to her new man about how she never finished when she was with him. But this was a new level of cruelty, even for her. He’s angry, sure, and he wants to hate her but he doesn’t because Dennis doesn’t hate people even when they deserve it. Instead, he takes all that hatred and turns it on himself. But today, at least, he took a stand. He walked out the door, telling himself that she’s not worthy of his help or his kindness, and she will never get it again. He makes a promise to himself to reserve his kindness for people who deserve it, tells himself he’s done letting people walk all over him. He thinks about Jax coming home in a few days and he decides to dig deep and find some strength. He’ll need it for what is sure to be a tough transition.
Because he’s worried about bringing Jax home. Dennis has been preparing the house for his arrival, buying him the type of treats and toys you said he likes, a brand new Casper dog bed and a nice fuzzy blanket for his spot on the couch. He’s been cleaning like crazy (even though he keeps his place very neat to begin with) and all the while he’s been thinking the worst. What if he doesn’t like it here? What if he doesn’t like me? What if he misses you and wants to go back?
Dennis wouldn’t blame him. He wouldn’t want to leave you either. When he’s not worrying about Jax’s homecoming, he’s thinking about you—how desperate you seemed to get away from him after you’d made the mistake of inviting him for coffee. That call from your roommate was a convenient excuse to leave, but he stops short of believing you a liar. No, you just got a lucky break, because what reason would you have for wanting to stay? You’d given him all the information he needed; that’s what you were there for. And what did Dennis do but talk about his ex and his fucking divorce?
Dennis replays your “date” over and over again in his mind, only in his fantasy conversations with you, he is the man he wants to be instead of the man he is. He asks you questions about yourself. He tells you how smart and sweet and beautiful you are. He tells you that he wants to take you out anywhere you want to go and do anything you want to do. And in his waking dream, you say yes and you tell him how handsome he is, how much you want him, all the things you’d let him do to you. And the man he wants to be can actually do those things instead of just having a sad wank watching other men do them in pornos.
Which is exactly what he spends his Friday night doing. With only a few short hours left until he goes to pick up Jax (and sees you again), his mind is racing with thoughts of everything that could go wrong. He tries to distract himself by having a few beers and watching baseball but he can’t quiet his mind. No, there’s only one thing that’ll put him right to sleep. He grabs his phone and gets in bed in just his boxers, scrolling his favorite Twitter porn account until he finds a girl who looks enough like you if he squints. He pulls his cock out and strokes himself hard and slow as the man in the video eats the girl out until she’s shaking and pulling his hair. It’s only 2 minutes long but that’s more than enough time for Dennis, especially once he closes his eyes and pictures your face and what it might look like contorted with bliss and moaning his name.
He wants to make you feel that way, wants to taste you on his tongue and make you scream for him. He knows he can’t, though. Even if by some miracle you’d let him anywhere near you, he could never make you cum like that. The last time he tried to go down on his ex, she laughed at him, told him he was no good at it, and made him watch as she used her clit suction toy on herself—talking shit the whole time about how easily replaced he was by a piece of plastic with a motor. The idea of trying with you, of disappointing you, makes him want to curl up and die.
But Dennis would give anything just to touch you again—just another brush of your hand like the one that set him on fire and had him half-hard in his pants in public within seconds. And he’s sure you noticed; you were so horribly embarrassed and practically ran away from him, because you’re a nice girl who doesn’t need to associate herself with a touch-starved loser who pops a boner when a woman’s fingers graze his knuckles. As badly as he wants to see you in the morning, he’s dreading it, because he knows it’ll be the last time. Once he has Jax home, there are no more excuses for him to text you or come see you, and he knows he doesn’t have the balls to ask you out. Even if you said yes, you’d realize soon enough it was a mistake. No, tomorrow is the end of his delusions of you and him. He just hopes to God he can make it through without embarrassing himself.
***
You get to work early Saturday morning, wanting to spend as much time with Jax as possible before he leaves. You feed him his breakfast and take him out for his morning walk—a nice, long one today, because it’s the last one—and you start to cry on your way back inside. When he hears you sniffle, Jax looks up at you with his sweet eyes full of concern.
“It’s ok, Jax,” you tell him. “You’re gonna be so happy.”
He nuzzles up against your thigh as you walk him back to his pen and part of you considers leaving now just so you don’t have to watch him walk out. If you’re honest, though, it’s because you’re scared to see Dennis after making such a fool of yourself. Mal is convinced he’s going to ask you on a date today but you know he won't. He hasn’t texted you since your disastrous coffee date—not that he has any real reason to, but you thought that maybe he might have some last-minute Jax-related matters to discuss. But nope. Nothing. Radio silence. As much as it’s going to rip your heart out to see Jax go, you stare at the clock, wishing you could speed up time and just get it all over with. Once Jax is gone, so is Dennis. Then you can stop thinking about him and all the what-ifs and just go back to normal. You can stop wanting things you can’t have.
You’re in your office reviewing a new application when you hear his voice at the front desk. Your heart starts thumping in your chest because you know you have to go out there and slap a smile on your face for him and for Jax and make sure everything goes smoothly but you just want to hide in the bathroom and cry. You take a quick look at yourself in the mirror and see the complete mess you’ve made of yourself—all puffy eyes and smudged mascara. You’re such a wreck that you have to laugh, and even though you try to do a quick touch-up on your makeup, it’s pointless. You look like shit. You feel like shit. You just want to go home and curl up with Badger and a box of wine and watch sad movies until you pass out.
“Hey Dennis!” you say, thinking that the false cheer in your voice and in your smile must be completely obvious. “Today’s the big day!”
He looks as nervous as you feel, standing there with his hands shoved into his pockets and shuffling his feet. “Yeah,” he says. “So, uh, how does this-” He stops talking when he finally gets a look at you, and he furrows his brow. “Are you ok?” he asks, his concern genuine, and you almost start to cry again.
“Oh, totally!” you lie. “Just… uh… you know. High pollen count today. Anyway, why don’t you come into my office and we can fill out the final paperwork and then we’ll get you boys home.”
You can feel his large presence a few steps behind you as you walk to your office, all the way telling yourself keep it together keep it together don’t be crazy keep it together. Dennis sits opposite you in a folding chair that is much too small for his broad frame and you almost laugh. You can’t keep the smile off your face, though.
“What?” he asks, his blue eyes wide behind his glasses.
“It’s just… you’re a little big for that chair. Do you want me to get you another one?”
He looks down at his body, as if he’s only just realizing how massive he is in comparison to the seat, and he shrugs. “I’m ok,” he says, but you can see you’ve made him self-conscious and you’re already wishing you’d kept your damn mouth shut.
“Here are the papers. Nothing too complicated,” you say, handing him a few sheets. “You just fill those out and sign them and I’ll go get your boy!”
You rush out of the room before he can say anything and make a pit stop in the bathroom. You talk to yourself in the mirror. “Get your fucking shit together. What the fuck is wrong with you?” And then you hear a toilet flush and Betsy comes out looking radiant as always. She takes one look at you and she knows.
“Jax leaving?”
“Yeah,” you answer. “I just… I need a minute. Can you make sure he’s all ready to go? Dennis is in my office filling out the final paperwork and I just… I can’t go out there yet.”
“Sure thing,” she says. “And, hey, if it’s any consolation, I’m pretty sure Dennis would let you see as much of Jax and of him as you want to.”
You spin around to face her. “Why do you say that?” you ask.
“I saw the way he looked at you,” she replies. “That dopey lovestruck look. That’s how Jack used to look at me.”
“He still looks at you like that, Bets.”
“Yeah,” she says. “I guess he does. Anyway, just thought you should know. I’ll go take care of Jaxy. You stay here and get that shit of yours together.”
You take a minute or two to just breathe, and when you return to your office you find all 80 pounds of Jax sitting on Dennis’s lap in the tiny chair.
“Oh my God,” you say. “I have to take a picture. Can I take a picture?”
Dennis is all smiles and giggles as Jax licks every inch of his face and neck.
“Yeah,” he says, coming up for air. “Go for it.”
You grab your phone and take a few shots and then a video, telling yourself they will be great for the website but really you want them, too—a memory of a happy Jax on his way to his new happy home.
“Get down, Jax,” you say. “That chair is about to collapse.”
Jax does as he’s commanded and bounds over to you, jumping up to give you a few kisses, too. And that’s when you lose it. You try not to, but it’s pointless. The dam breaks and the tears pour out and you fall to your knees in front of Jax, wrapping your arms around him.
“I’m gonna miss you, buddy,” you say into his fur. “I love you. You’re gonna have such a good life. I just know it.”
You hear Dennis get up out of the chair and come kneel next to you, and when he places his big hand on your back, it just makes you sob harder.
“I’m so sorry,” you say. “This is so unprofessional. I never do this. I usually just cry at home like a normal person.”
“Hey,” he says, his deep voice soft and soothing. “I meant what I said the other day. You can come see us any time you want.”
“No,” you say. “He needs to adjust. It would just confuse him.”
“What… What if… I want you to come see us?”
You look up at him and wipe the tears from your eyes and you can see his Adam’s apple bob as he swallows deep.
“You… you’d want me to?”
“Yeah,” he says. “I would. I really really would. We both would, right Jax?” Jax barks right in your face and you laugh. “See? How can you say no to that?”
“Well, I never could say no to this guy,” you reply, pulling Jax’s ears down and letting go so they pop back up into place.
“So you’ll come over?” he asks, all nerves again like you hadn’t already agreed. “Once we get settled in?”
“I’d love to come visit,” you reply, looking from Jax to Dennis. “The both of you. Now get the hell out of here before I start crying again, will you? Time to take this good boy home.”
Dennis stands up and holds his hand out for you to hoist yourself up off the floor, but you both pull a little too hard and you end up stumbling into him, catching yourself on the hard muscle of his chest. You let your hands linger a beat too long as you stare at him, his hand still holding yours and his other hand cradling your elbow. He licks his plump bottom lip and your whole body feels like its throbbing.
“Sorry,” you whisper, unable to find your voice. “Clumsy me.”
You both let go at the same time. Dennis straightens his polo shirt where you’d bunched it with your fists and you wipe your hands on your jeans because now you’re starting to sweat. You haven’t been that close to a man in months, and you’d never been that close to one so fucking huge with such pretty eyes who smells so good.
“I’ll see you soon,” he says. “Yeah?”
“Yeah,” you reply, still breathless from your little accident.
You lean down and give Jax a kiss on the head and you watch the two of them walk down the hall and out the door, your heart still racing from the absolute insanity of what just happened. You need to call Mal. You need to call her now. You shut the door of your office and dial her up and she picks up on the second ring.
“So,” she says, “what happened? Did he ask you out?”
“Sort of,” you say. “He wants me to come over and visit and I may have accidentally felt him up.”
You have to pull the phone away from your ear because Mal is cackling so loud. “Oh, yeah, ‘accidentally’—right.”
“No, I sort of just… I don’t know… stumbled into the great expanse of his chest and maybe I stayed there longer than I should have.”
“And what did he do when you groped his man titties, hmm?”
“Nothing,” you say. “He just sort of… stood there and, like, held my… I don’t know, Mal. It was an accident. It doesn’t mean-”
“Shut. The. Fuck. Up. It does absolutely mean whatever you think it doesn’t mean. Now hurry up and finish work because we’re going to shopping to get you something cute to wear over to Big Boy’s house.”
“Mal, it’s not a date. And don’t call him that.”
“It’s a fucking date. It counts. And I’ll call him whatever I want. See you later, you minx.”
Mal hangs up before you have a chance to tell her she’s wrong. It’s not a date. He’s just being nice. He saw how upset you were and he wanted to make you feel better. If anything, he’s a friend. Yes, a friend, being friendly. And the other part… well, that was an accident. Best to just forget about it. It didn’t mean anything. You fell, he caught you. That’s what friends do.

Wayne's Anatomy
So basically I've been watching Grey's Anatomy and want to cast batfam as characters (I'm only on season 3 so please no spoilers)
Dick would be Meredith.
I want to say Jason would be Alex but i also want Jason to have the Izzie x Denny storyline but make it JayRoy
Tim would be George. I actually debated this one as i felt like he would also be a good fit for Christina but ultimately i see him more as George
Cass would be Izzie
Damian would be Christina, cut throat and focused.
Babs would be Dr Bailey
I see Steph as Dr Torres
Bruce as Dr Webber
McDreamy, McSteamy, and Addison are all still undecided
Idk who Duke would be but Duke needs to be in it

[pm] I'd rather not risk it then. I know you won't tell anyone either way, so no need to add a level of danger to it or whatever. But yeah, she did. [...] We're not really talking about it at the moment. Or much of anything else, but that's for the better I think.
Almost kind of like the X-Men? [user is really proud she's remembering the comic lore that Cass has shown her so far though that was quickly forgotten when she read the simp part. now she's just smiling like an idiot at her phone.] Mutual simping is the best kind I think. But no, you are the best around.
Denny's rush hour is the perfect time. See? You're a pro already. I hope you're raking in the CashApp donations.
You're so right. You know what? I think we have a lot of hiding to do and a lot of covers to maintain. I've really been on my spy game lately so you know... might have to kiss you a lot. For the cover, obviously. [...] I can't even play it's just because I want to.
Not necessarily. Depends on how much I'm paying attention and what's going on around us? If I'm listening, the lack of heartbeat is kind of a giveaway, but it's not like something I'm usually looking out for? Honestly, half the time I'm trying to tune out most of what I'm hearing anyway. I couldn't tell you weren't human though... until like literally saw you looking like your molten hot self. You do have a unique scent though--- it's very earthy and fiery? I can't put a name to it, but it's my favorite.
I don't think there's any making something that should have never happened okay, but you being there for her helps with moving forward I think. [...] You're probably right. I know what she is and vice versa so... no need to pretend with each other either. I know that can be extra exhausting when you're already hurting.
I know, yeah. [...] I'm not sure. I think probably no more bunker. I know if I go deep enough out into the woods where there's not anyone else it'll be fine, I'm just still kind of scared to not have that guarantee of not being able to hurt anyone. But I think maybe I also knew long term I couldn't keep locking myself up like that and like... have me ok?
I think she's all stocked up on those. Just bring your cute self... and maybe some sour candies?
[pm] I won't let you down. My balloons will be impeccable.
[...]
It can be. But it's a lot easier for it to be dangerous for someone who doesn't understand it in full than it is for someone who's been doing it all their life, you know? You don't have to worry about me. Most of the time, The word stuff doesn't even hurt me anymore. And you don't have to be sorry. [...] Your sister killed him? Alex, I'm not sure I blame her. Is that What does it say about me if I won't tell anyone. I won't make it a promise if you don't want me to, but you can trust that I won't tell anyone.
Definitely a cool group of weirdos in [...] varying states of humanity. I'm pretty sure we have at least one of every 'type' of person now. Undead, fae, shapeshifter, human+... Are any of our friends human human? Maybe just Wynne. I think it all works out, because I'm a total simp for you, too. I kind of think you're the best person around. And definitely super hot. I'd howl for you any time. Are wolf puns okay?
Oh, I like that. I'm definitely putting that up in the AM. Gotta make sure to post it during Denny's rush hours. That's when all the olds are at their most generous.
Definitely, 100%, absolutely okay. In fact, I think kissing makes the hiding more convincing. You know, like in spy movies when they make out to maintain a cover!
So you can [...] tell when someone's undead? That's so cool. Could you tell I wasn't human when we met? [...] I just want to make it okay. But I think that's going to take a while. I think you and Nora being around would help her, though. I think [...] making sure she's surrounded by people who care about her can't hurt right now.
Honestly, that would check out. [...] That's totally fair. You're allowed to do it on your time, you know? [...] Oh. So... no more bunker?
Bet, then I'm definitely coming over! Do you think I should bring anything? [...] I don't know where to buy brains.

You remembered the first time he whispered the pet name in your ear “Well Hello, Kitten” in that smarmy British accent. You had been so heart broken when you thought Castiel had burned his bones. You hadn’t admitted to it. God just imagining Dean’s reaction had you squeamish. Your eldest brother was annoyingly over protective. Sam was understandably over protective as a big brother but Dean took it to the next level.” Sam knew you liked the attention Crowley gave you. While he was an ass to your brothers he was absolutely accommodating to you. All you had to do was ask. Sure, he pretended to put up a fight but all you had to do was bat your long eyelashes and he couldn’t say no. Dean pretended he didn’t notice.
You weren’t usually attracted to older men...not that much older than you. And it was just Crowley’s vessel. He was obviously eons older than that body. Not that you minded. There was something charming about him. Not that you could even act on it. It was like you had the Devil and an Angel on each shoulder. Castiel had taken equal interest in you. The Angel was clearly the better choice. He was someone Dean might actually approve of, but there was something about a bad boy that you couldn’t turn from. You were playing a dangerous game, but you couldn’t help yourself.
“Yoooo hooooo” Dean waved his hand in front of your face to get your attention. “Where’d you just go to Bug?” You had a love/hate relationship with the pet name he had for you.
“No place. Just daydreaming.” Dean wiggled his eyebrows at you.
“About what....or should I say who?” You rolled your eyes at him.
“Are you 12?” He gave you his best Dennis the Menace grin and you pushed him away by his face.
“Can you two stop? We have a pretty nasty demon 6 hours south of here.” Sam spoke up, irritated with the two of you messing around.
“Do you want me to ask Crowley to call them off?” You gave same a questioning look.
“Nah, we can take care of this one ourselves. No need to take advantage of his favor of you for something we can do. Let’s save that for the big stuff.”
“What do you mean his favor of her?” Dean narrowed his eyes at you. You shrugged.
“He’s nicer to me than you guys. That’s all.” Sam raised his eyebrows but it seemed to appease Dean.
—————————————
A day and a half later you were regretting not calling on the King or Hell. The demon had gotten the jump on you and taken the baby Winchester mostly to mess with Dean. It was well known his high regard for you and that there weren’t any lengths he’d go through to protect you. You had stayed with him when Sammy had gone to Stanford. You didn’t begrudge Sam. You wanted him to have everything he ever wanted, but it led to you and Dean getting really close too. People tried to use that against him. They underestimated you.
This demon, however, did not. You were strung up by your arms, close to what felt like death. The demon had ripped the back of your shirt open and had placed 50 painful lashings on your bare flesh. You didn’t cry. You just asked them “is that all you got?” Which the bitch replied “I’m saving the fun stuff for when big brothers get here”. You internally cringed not knowing how much more you could actually take. You were gagged so you couldn’t call for Castiel. And there was no way you could do a summoning spell for Crowley. Was he allowing this to happen? Did he know? You felt tears fall down your face. You were so close to death and all you could think about was Crowley.
You heard fighting in the distance. Dean and Sam broke down the door and saw you hanging there. Sam thought he was going to be sick. You tried to scream to them so they would see the demon coming from behind but it was no use. You cried as you watched your brothers get the fiercest beating you’d seen in a long time.
All of the sudden you saw the Demon light up. Castiel must have show up and stabbed them from behind with an angel blade. Your eyes widened in shock when you saw Crowley standing smugly as the demon fell. “What a pity...she certainly was talented. I guess that only gets you so far if you can’t take direction.”
Sam stumbled over to you and cut you down, holding you so your cut shirt didn’t fall off. “Please Sammy....please just let me die. This pain...I can’t.” You were sobbing and traumatized.
“Oh Kitten, don’t be so dramatic.” Crowley came over and touched your shoulder healing the wounds on your back and putting your shirt on one piece again. It was a shame he couldn’t fix the psychological scars.
“You killed one of your most demented demons...for going after me? Why?” You knew Crowley liked you, but you didn’t think it went that far.
“Well I guess I just can’t stand the thought of loosing you kitten.” And then he was gone.
—————————————
“I’m only going to ask you this once Y/N, is there something going on between you and Crowley?!” Dean demanded after the silence in the Impala was almost deafening. “I mean what is with the two of you. First Ruby and now Crowley?!” Sam had you sit in the front with Dean so you’d be more comfortable and you saw him visibly wince at the mention of Ruby’s name.
“Seriously? Nothing is going on between me and Crowley. And leave Sammy out of this! We are far beyond Ruby.” You glared at Dean.
“Okay then what is with his little pet name for you? Or what he said about loosing you? And don’t act like you don’t flirt back. I’ve seen it!”
“Dean...he has pet names for you and Sam” you argued.
“Yeah Moose and Squirrel. And the way he says Kitten when he calls you that.” Dean shuddered.
“Okay I can’t control they so stop giving me shit for it. I only flirt with him when we need him to do something.” Well that was a lie but whatever, Dean didn’t need to know that.
“Well then that stops. We are not pimping out our sister to The King of Hell for favors!” Dean yelled.
“Why are you so gross?” You had a look of pure disgust on your face. Dean shrugged.
“I’m just saying knock that shit off or I’ll lock you in your bedroom.
“You’re obnoxious.” You crossed your arms in front of you. “Am I allowed to still flirt with Cass?” You grinned at Sam as Dean swerved his prized Baby.
“WHAT?! NO!”
—————————————
“You rang Kitten?” Crowley stood in your room in the bunker after you did the summoning spell.
“Shhhh! I don’t want you to wake up Dean!”
“Hmmm big brother wouldn’t be a fan of you being alone in your room with me?” Crowley teased stepping near you.
“I mean it! Look I just wanted to thank you for saving me and healing me. You didn’t have to do that.”
“Well of course Kitten. Can’t have my favorite human dead” you sighed and ran your fingers through your hair. “What’s wring darling? You seem distressed”
“I just- look. I know there’s something here, between us. And I know I use it to gain favor with you. But it can’t go any further. It has to stop.”
“I see.” Crowley hid any emotion he was feeling.
“I can’t do that to Dean. I know it’s my choice what I do. And for whatever reason I DO feel something for you. But I shouldn’t. And normally I don’t let my brothers make decisions for me, but this? This would kill him. And I can’t do that. Dean has taken care of me and sacrificed himself for me on more than one occasion. He’s everything. Even when I had nothing I still had Dean. I’m sorry.”
“There, there my darling, it’s alright. You don’t have to be sorry. I know all of this. And I know that my favor for you can never go past that. I’m fine knowing you are well and safe. But don’t think I’m not going to use you to get under big brother’s skin.” He leaned in and pressed a searing kiss to your lips. “I had to do that, just once. I think you’re much better suited for that angel. You’d turn me into someone worthy of you. Can’t have that now, can we?” And then he was gone. She felt her heart drop. If only she could turn him into something good. But you can’t force a man to change and there was no way Crowley would give up being the King of Hell for her.

Ah, so that’s what this was about. She’d expected him to bring it up again sooner or later, but had been banking more on later.
Cass looked back at Dennis. Of course she worried; he was a kid that got pulled into some alien war where the vast majority of the combatants were much bigger, stronger, and more resilient than any human could hope to be on their own. But saying any of that might scare him off from talking about whatever was on his mind right now. So she kept those thoughts to herself and nodded, “I’ll listen. No freak outs, promise.”
He takes in another deep breath and holds it a moment, in a last ditch effort to settle his nerves before they’re completely shot from the conversation, then lets it out through a great big sigh. “Okay.
“I’m hanging out with Silas. From M.E.C.H.”

Chapter 11
Title: Falling for the Holidays
Pairing: Dean x Reader AU
Word Count: 1856
Summary: With October ending and the holidays underway, that only meant one thing for Dean Winchester. It meant returning to his childhood home and spending time with his family. It meant listening to his parents, especially his mom, ramble on and on about when he was going to find himself a nice girl, bring her home for the holidays, and then eventually get married and have children. However, Dean wasn’t ready for that sort of commitment, so in order to get his family off his back, he comes up with an elaborate scheme! But like the saying goes, “sometimes lies become truths.”
Warnings: Angsty-ish, One bad word (I think).
A/N: I said I wasn’t going to take forever to write the next chapter and I feel like it took me twice as long this time. Ugh. I hope you all forgive me. Thank you for being patient and thank you for showing my series some attention and love. It means a lot to me! Happy Reading! Please let me know what you think! I do adore the feedbacks, even if it’s a gif, emoji, or one word. Thanks again! xx
Series Masterlist
Dean watched her disappear through the crowds. Jo was about to chase after you, but Cass stopped her, reminding the petite blonde how you needed space when you were upset. Disturbing you would only make matters worse, unless it was Dean. But that was no longer an option, since the person she was currently furious with was Dean.
Without relaying a word back to his friends, Dean walked off, exiting the cafeteria. Cass, Jo, and Meg, just watched, not knowing what to do.
Sharing similar characteristics as you, Dean needed time to cool off. Usually, you were the designated Dean-Control person, but that wasn’t an option. The two people who needed each other was the two people who couldn’t be around each other. It was all… very complicated. Before you came along, Dean was a pretty private man. Cass was his only constant friend (his best friend.) But when you came along, Jo started to hang out with them, Benny and Garth came around often, and there were other’s who would stop Dean to say hello through the halls or in the library. Dean was an introvert at best.
“Fuck. This is gonna be some mess, isn’t it?” Jo asked aloud.
“Unfortunately,” Cass sighed, not wanting to think about the repercussions of the feud.
Dean went through the rest of his classes like a zombie, listening to what his professors were saying but not fully grasping it. He just jotted down notes he thought might be important, but didn’t bother to absorb the information like he usually did.
You on the other hand, used your fury to type down word for word everything your professor spoke, even his terrible jokes. You had no idea what he was saying, but your fingers had no time to rest. You needed to focus your pent up energy on something otherwise you’d lose it.
When classes were over, Dean dragged his way to his truck, sitting there for a while, wondering if you were going show up. Dean sat up straight when he saw you walking down the campus, but instantly slumped back into his seat when he noticed a black sports car pull up in front of you. The driver’s side window was open and Dean’s fists clenched around the steering wheel when he noticed who it was.
“Ketch,” he growled, intensely staring.
When his eyes averted back to you, both your eyes suddenly met. You were a little shocked and so was Dean, but you could see the pain in his expression even from yards away. Brushing the feelings away, you hopped into the car.
“Hello, beautiful. How was your classes?” Ketch asked.
“It was boring as usual,” you told him, glancing back in time to see Dean race out of the parking lot.
You felt a little guilty because you knew your words had hurt, but so did his. But you knew Dean better than that and you knew he didn’t mean what he said, but still… he didn’t deserve your understanding. He stepped over the line and now he had to pay the consequences however, the look he gave you when you said you never wanted to see or talk to him again made your stomach sink. Regret washed all over him and you knew then that he was sorry, but you couldn’t bring yourself to face him head on, at least not in a room full of people. You couldn’t let them see you cry.
“Everything alright? You seem a little distracted,” Ketch brought you out of your thoughts.
“Uh, yeah,” you sent him a weak smile, “just a rough day.”
“Oh. Well, if you want to go home, I can drop you off. I don’t mind a raincheck. You don’t have to go out with me if you’re not up for it.”
“No, it’s fine. A distraction from my distraction could be just what I need. I’m glad you called, I really am,” you assured him.
“Okay, great. Are you hungry?” You could tell he was trying to change the subject and lighten up the mood, much to your relief.
“Starved,” was you reply.
Ketch brought you to a quaint little restaurant. It was practically a hole in the wall. You’ve been there once with Dean, but neither of you liked what was served on the menu, claiming it was “too healthy,” but you didn’t want to offend Ketch, so you went along with it.
“Have you ever eaten here before?” He asked, as the he lead you to a table next to the window.
“I’ve been here once, when it first opened. Dean and I came here to try it out,” you explained.
“Dean? Was he an old boyfriend?” Ketch wondered.
“O-oh. Um, Dean is my…” you didn’t even have to finish the sentence. Ketch was more than capable to put two and two together.
“Oh. Your best friend. The one you told me about. I see. So his name is Dean.”
“Yeah. I mean… we’re friends and I figured I could trust you.” You looked at him with hesitant eyes, reluctant to believe that maybe it was a bad idea.
“Yes. Of course. You can trust me. I’m not here to judge anyone,” Ketch replied. A sense of relief washed over you. There weren’t many people you opened up to, so knowing Ketch was someone you could trust made everything a lot lighter.
“Thank you, Ketch. It makes me so relieved to know I can count on you.”
“Always,” he smiled with soft brown eyes showing his sincerity.
Dean raced back to his apartment, coming to a slow stop when he finally cooled down. He cursed himself for being an idiot, assuming that you had called Ketch to pick you up instead of catching a ride with him, but he couldn’t blame you. He had ditched you that morning and during lunch he insulted you. Everything was his fault. Karma was a bitch.
“Dammit!” Dean shouted in his truck, banging on the steering wheel, his chest heaving with frustration.
A knock on his window made him jump, distracting him from his current thoughts. “Dean?”
“L-Lisa?” He stared at her with confusion. “What—” Dean opened the door, stepping out of his truck when he realized it that she wouldn’t be able to hear him clearly. “What are you doing here?” He questioned, his eyes catching Ben in the car parked a few spaces behind her.
“We wanted to come see you,” she admitted.
“Doesn’t Ben have school or something?”
“Oh! Yes he does, but he’s in preschool, so he’ll be fine,” Lisa explained.
“Oh. I see.” Dean didn’t say it out loud, but he thought that it was a little extreme that she’d take Ben out of school just to visit him, especially since he’d be back home for Christmas in a at the end of the instruction week.
“Look, I know what you’re thinking. Why, right?” When Dean didn’t reply, she took that as her cue to speak again. “Can we just go inside and talk about it? Ben and I are freezing.”
“Uh, yeah. Sure. Let’s go—”
“Mom! I’m hungry!” Ben screamed, his voice muffled by the car window.
“Looks like the kid has spoken. Why don’t you both hope into the truck and we go get something to eat?” Dean suggested.
“That sounds amazing,” Lisa smiled, skipping over to Ben.
With everyone in the truck, Ben sandwiched between his mom and Dean, they sped off into the center of town. School had just ended, so the traffic was pretty heavy. “Oh. c’mon. I hate the afterschool rush,” Dean grumbled.
You were about to take a bite out of your salad when you happened to look out the window. It was hard to miss the red Ford truck passing through with not only Dean in the hunk of metal, but Ben and Lisa as well.
A loud clank echoed through the restaurant as your fork crashed onto the ceramic plate.
“Y/N? Everything alright?” Ketch, along with everyone else in the restaurant, stared at you with concern, a few patrons glaring at you with irritation. “Y/N.” Only when Ketch placed his hand over yours did you snap back to reality.
“What? Uh… sorry. I – I thought I saw something,” you faked a chuckle.
“What was it?” Ketch asked, turning around to take a glimpse out the window behind him.
“It… it was nothing. Sorry. I guess my mind was playing tricks on me. I must be really hungry,” you joked.
The rest of the evening, you were a little – or a lot – out if. Ketch had to steer you around many times, and had to yank you back from walking into traffic.
“Y/N, what in god’s name is going on in that head of yours?” He snapped, grabbing you by the arms and looking you into the eyes. You could tell that he was worried, so you weren’t offended by his scolding.
“Sorry. I think I’m just a little tired. It was a long weekend and a rough day at school.”
“Hey. It’s okay. How about I just take you home, hm?” You nodded your head in a response, allowing him to take your hand and lead the way back to his car.
Rounding a corner, you and Ketch came to an abrupt stop, almost running into a group of people.
“Oh, pardon u—” Ketch didn’t finish, flinching. “Li—B—umm, Dennis?” Ketch stammered.
“Dea-Dennis?” Your attention drew to Ketch. Who the hell was Dennis? You had heard that name before… Quickly averting your attention back to the group in your path, you stared at them. “Dean? Lisa?”
“Y/N?” Lisa seemed to be surprised as well. There was a flicker in her eyes when they barely landed on Ketch that had you thinking, perhaps, they new each other. “U-um, hi,” Lisa was able to pull her self back together quickly, a big smile adorning her lips. “Who’s your friend?”
“Uh, Lisa, Dean, Ben, this is Ketch,” you introduced.
“Dean? I think we’ve met. Didn’t you say your name was Dennis?” Ketch announced, his head tilting a tad.
“Wait, you two have met before?” Lisa chimed in.
“Lisa, do you know Ketch?” You added to the conversation, directing your question at the brunette.
“Funny story…” Dean chuckled, scratching the back of his neck, as he figured out a plausible explanation.
Everything was in disarray and everyone was talking all at the same time, holding multiple conversations that quickly started to make no sense. When you finally took control and stopped the madness, you all noticed that Ben was missing.
“Where’s Ben?” Lisa asked, snapping her head side to side in search for her four-year old son. “Ben?!”
Panic shot threw all of you. “It’ll be easier with we split up,” Dean advised, looking over at you, standing directly in front of him.
“Agreed,” Ketch responded.
It took less than a second for you and Dean to pull your eyes away from each other when you noticed that Ketch and Lisa were gone. It was a little weird, but it wasn’t the time to think about that. The priority was Ben.

2x13 II
(x)
Cassidy knew as soon as he stepped out of the room, Jesse would immediately lunge for him and probably drag him out to the sun. He was on thin ice, and any sudden heavy movement around Jesse would only drown him.
He felt the hairs on his arm raise in a way unlike before. He’d never been scared this way before. He’s never had a reason to be this terrified. Although some part of him did know deep down that it could’ve ended in worse ways. He’s forgiven Jesse for the incident back in Annville, who’s to say Jesse won’t forgive him now?
He focused on the task at hand. You still weren’t breathing, in fact, the only sound that could be heard was the abrupt buzzing of the refrigerator in the other room. Your head cradled in his lap, the blood had seeped away making it give the illusion that nothing had ever happened.
He tilted his head, playing with your hair as he searched for any sign of life in you.
Cassidy was, in no ways, a man of religion. Excluding the proverbial exclamations during a certain time he’d have guests. He thought it was a sham. All bullocks decided to appease a group of people in order to stop chaos. He’d seen enough of it to believe that people turned to some stocious moppet when it was their own troubles to blame. He never thought it'd lead him into some hot waters someday, but here he was. A goddamn fool holding his soulmate’s life in his hands. God must be having a laugh, if he even knew at all.
He sighed. Carefully, he moved your body away, accommodating your head on top of the pillow softly. He doesn’t know how long it’ll take for you to wake up, he doesn’t know if your body is fighting against him or if he’s put you in some sort of limbo. He just really hopes it’s not the last one.
Taking calculated steps, his breath hitches once he turns the knob and opens the door. The wave of cold air hits him and for a second, he’s expecting Jesse’s hands on him. So he waits. When it doesn’t come, he exhales in relief.
He feels his stomach churn when he sees a familiar sight to the corner of his eye. Jesse.
He sits cross legged at the table, holding a steaming cup of what Cassidy can only assume is coffee and feels that he should worry about third degree burns.
If looks could kill, Cassidy would’ve been obliterated into ashes that Jesse would’ve been all too happy to sweep away.
His eyes are daggers that cut into the tension that looms in the room. He wasn’t sure where they were in terms of speaking. Cassidy walked past Jesse in a rush, and rummaged through the fridge, looking for anything to eat in case you needed it.
“How long?” Jesse suddenly asked. Cassidy stood from his hunched position, still not facing Jesse.
“What do y-”
“Cut the bullshit Cassidy. How long has this been going?” Jesse repeated, this time in a firmer and bitter tone.
Cassidy grimaced.
“Since Annville. We didn’t think to tell you because she knew how you’d react.” He said lowly.
He heard Jesse inhale sharply.
“Well what’s worse? Me finding out months ago? Or seconds before my kid sister’s death? Tell me how that’s fair.”
“She’s an adult.”
Jesse banged his fists on the table. Cassidy blinked in surprise. He wasn’t afraid of Jesse. Well, not until he began to laugh mockingly.
“You think you know what’s good for her? You think that just because you knocked her up, all of a sudden you know what she wants? You don’t. I’ve spent years and I mean years protecting her from people like you. She’s a kid. She don’t know any better. ”
Cassidy sniffed. He nodded, looking down at his twiddling fingers. “Aye. Maybe I don’t. But what makes you think you know her the same way? You abandoned her then and you were ready to abandon her at death’s door. You don’t deserve her. You never did. ”
Jesse stood, sending his chair back with a screech. “Don’t you dare talk to me about deserve. What do you even know about it? A lying self-obsessed junkie. That’s all you’ll ever be. ”
Cassidy stood on his heels momentarily, before outstretching his arm and extending a finger to Jesse’s direction.
“Things change, Padre! And you know it. If you weren’t blinded by your own ego you’d come to see that maybe this is what she needs. It’s not just her I was saving.”
“Yeah, because everything was smooth sailing with Dennis. You’ll drag her down like you did him. I watched you burn once, but I won’t watch her do the same. ”
The gruesome image of seeing his only living relative burning to ashes was enough to make Jesse’s blood run cold. He’d seen far too many good people die. Most of the time it was because of him. He just couldn’t have you be a liability.
The corner of Cassidy’s lips twitched. “Dennis - was different. He was selfish. She isn’t. Why can’t you just see I’m acting in her best interest? Maybe I wasn’t a good father to Dennis but I can turn things around now. ”
Jesse scoffed.
“She ain’t gonna live with that thing - ”
“It’s not a thing.” Cassidy gritted. “It’s a baby.”
He felt his chest heave as his nostrils flared. He was ready to attack Jesse at any given moment. If the need should arise.
“You better find a way to reverse what you did. I’m not goin’ to lose her to you.” Jesse said, before storming off.
Cassidy would’ve countered if he didn’t agree with him. He felt the same way. He loved you to the ends of the earth and he was determined to keep it that way. But for his sake and Jesse’s own sanity, you had to pull through soon.
He sat on the floor. Elbows on his knees as he raked his hands over his face yet again. It was already sundown and you hadn’t woken up. He was starting to think the worst. He started doubting himself.
Maybe he was blind. He was blinded by the situation and he needed a reality check. Maybe this was it. There was really only two ways this could’ve ended: he could’ve killed you or you would’ve gotten killed.
The image of you lying of the floor bleeding out helplessly was enough to give him nightmares. It stayed with him still.
He shifted his position again, choosing to turn back to you. Kneeling, with his chin on the itchy blanket that covered you, he waited.
He scrunched his eyes together, begging for a sign. Anything.
Then,
A cough.
His eyes fluttered open in the flash of a second. You coughed again. You groaned and you rolled over onto your side, but you coughed.
Cassidy had an ‘ah-ha!’ moment. He jumped to his feet and towered over you on the bed. The sudden touch on your newborn body startled you, but you relaxed into it.
“Cass?” You turned.
Cassidy looked down at you, eyes shining and filled with happiness. He leaned down to apply kisses all over your face until he stopped at your forehead.
“Thought you were gone.” He whispered. “I didn’t want to do it. I kept you from becoming a beast for as long as I possibly could.”
Your brows knitted together. “Hey no, shh, ” you brought his head down to lay on your chest, stroking his hair comfortingly. “You did what you had to do.”
He hugged your body close to him, instinctively laying a hand on your belly. It suddenly reminded you.
“Is -”
“I don’t know. ” He wasn’t sure. He hadn’t faced this problem before. He’d have to call Seamus later.
Your thoughts came back to Jesse. You began to cry. “What about Jesse?”
“He’s…less than happy with me right now. ”
You wiped away your tears, sniffing hard. Jesse was a tough person to control, you knew. But this is what life was for you now. For all three of you.
“I don’t want you to hate me too.” Cassidy said.
You were incredulous. You shook your head. “I don’t hate you. I can’t. I knew what I was getting into. I chose this. I chose this when I chose you.”
It was the only truth you could hold onto at the moment. It was the one thing that had significantly impacted your life.
“What happens now?” You asked. The thought of having to live upside down scared you. What if you forgot just for a moment, where would that lead you?
“Should I get Jesse?”
“No.” You answer too quickly, but he still chuckles to himself. “Can we just, lay here?”
“You’ve kind of been in a mini coma luv, I don’t know.”
“Please. I’m not ready to see him yet.”
He nods understandably. Cassidy shifts so now he’s spooning you, you keep your hands on his arms that are wrapped around you. You sink into him, needing to feel him closer.
In your mind, you can hear Jesse. You can hear him thank God and pray under his breath and comfort you. But you can also hear him berating you, young Jesse and present Jesse’s voices blend together, eventually fading until all you hear is ringing in your ear.
Although your body is perfectly intact, you don’t feel brand new. You feel dented, hungry, and exhausted.
You fall asleep seconds after he does. The two of you tethered by each other. You close your eyes.
Tabula rasa.

"So what other terrible tastes do you have?" Tulip asked.
It was the first thing anyone had said in hours. Jesse blinked hazily, still picking mud off the cuffs of his pants and dropping it into the carpet. His trip back from drowning the Saint had exhausted even his seemingly endless reserve and he yawned in response. Not like the question was meant for him. He didn't have any terrible tastes.
Jesse smiled. It felt like the first in a long time.
"Well?" Tulip demanded and now Cass stirred, taking his hand out of Dennis' hair to blink at her.
"Say what now?"
"What other terrible tastes you got?" Tulip seemed bored with her own words, leaning back in the chair and staring up at the ceiling. Jesse knew that ploy well. She'd pulled it often enough on him. Mostly when she was trying to push past an argument they'd had, even apologize, in her own way.
She found a pen between the cushions and twirled it between her fingers. "We know you like Bieber, disgustingly cheap wine, soap operas, PB&J with chips in it..."
Cass was scowling now. He used Dennis' thigh to leverage himself up.
"—sparkly butterfly shirts, sparkling skirts, those goddamn gel pens. What is it with you and glitter?"
"Now wait just a fuckin' minute." Cass flapped his hands frantically and Tulip caught Jesse's eye, winking. "You gotta slow down so I can tell you how wrong you are about all of that! Glitter makes everything better, you soulless heathen. Don't go knocking chips in your sandwich until you've tried it—and I know you have not. You haven't watched any Young and the Restless yet either, now have you? And, and..." Cass narrowed his eyes. "What was the rest of it?"
"Bieber," Jesse and Tulip intoned and Cass squawked like an indignant parrot.
"We've been over that! So many times! When will the two of you let it go?"
"Never."
It was amidst all the squabbling that Dennis shifted, still a little shaky in the arms and legs. He looked among the three of them, mouth occasionally working as he tried to follow the rapid-fire English. Oh, he knew more than he let on, a whole lot more than the few, lascivious words of French his father had bothered to learn over the years, and Dennis thought he deserved every ounce of discomfort he could squeeze from that man. Including:
"Ponies."
His soft voice cut across the room and his three—largely uninvited—guests ceased their bickering to stare at him, one with horror and two with hopeful glee. Dennis knew the whole title of course, but he put on his patented old-foreign-man face just to see his father start scrambling in panic. He had just enough strength to shove Cassidy back and plant his face into the couch cushion.
"Small," Dennis emphasized, speaking the English slowly. Below him Cassidy howled and started to shout something before Dennis covered his head with a pillow. He grinned. "My," he insisted.
"Oh," Tulip breathed. “My Little…”
"Pony," Jesse finished.
Dennis definitely couldn't catch the explosion of language that occurred after that, but the sentiment was clear as his father succeeded in pushing to his feet and started yelling, his words unheard over his strange friends' cackles. Dennis sat back, satisfied, and resolved to 'accidentally' leave out the colorful DVD collection that father was so fond of—wreak a little more havoc when they next needed it. 'Friendship is magic' indeed.
Oh, his father had terrible taste. No doubt about it. But not, perhaps, when it came to companionship.

Wednesday Roundup 8.8.2017
Okay quite a huge week for my pull list, though with a few sad farewells as a result of that. Will everything pass the muster? Or have we got some duds in waiting?
Just kidding everything’s wonderful and I’m going to explain why that is.
Marvel’s All-New Wolverine, DC’s Detective Comics, DC’s Gotham Academy: Second Semester, Marvel’s Immortal Iron Fists, Dark Horse’s The Legend of Korra: Turf Wars, Marvel’s Silk, DC’s Titans, IDW’s Transformers: Till All Are One
Marvel’s All-New Wolverine (2015-present) #23 Tom Taylor, Leonard Kirk, Michael Garland, Erick Arciniega
Probably my favorite Marvel book coming out right now is All-New Wolverine and I think nothing has helped my appreciation for Tom Taylor as a writer grow than this book. It’s everything I’ve always wanted for Laura and more, but I won’t waste time. Let’s just dig into the specifics~
Story: We’re in the midst of an arc that’s meant to completely avoid the stink of Secret Empire but also probably will limit exposure to Laura that will be given to the stupid asshole male Wolverine they replaced her with on the main team I meant that is meant to bring us into Laura and Gabby’s first big space opera adventure, which is a proud tradition for all Marvel A-listers, and especially familiar to the X-Men. But Laura’s not with the X-Men on this trip because a forced romance with Warren isn’t being shoved in our faces. She’s here with the Guardians of the Galaxy who are enjoying their rise in Marvel prominence quite a bit, I believe.
In any case, the Brood have kidnapped Gabby and this is pissing both of them off immensely because Laura’s protective of Gabby and Gabby’s protective of Jonathan their pet Wolverine, and everybody is trying to get in the way of the Wolverine ladies living a happy life that they deserve.
Now I don’t often give summaries but it’s difficult to really parse what this story gets right and why even as the crotchety woman that I am who usually doesn’t care for superheroes in space, I am enjoying the aliens and the epic giant crossover and the cast of thousands. And that’s because this story and this comic series is about Laura and Gabby. It’s about the sisterhood, the mother-daughter relationship, the friendship, and the just general goodness that they’ve provided for each other throughout the past 23 issues that makes all the dressing not matter nearly as much as the moments where Laura declares her commitment to getting Gabby back or Gabbys stern rebuttal to the idea that any outcome would be possible besides Laura coming for her. That faith and trust has been earned for over 20 issues and it’s the thing that really makes this comic stand out from the majority of the comics I’m going over this week.
This is a comic that has always been about these two characters and the loving bond that they share for one another. And it is exactly why it works to the point that I can give a hilariously complex summary like the one above without it making a real difference, and it’s why the final page is so gut wrenching for a cliffhanger.
Art: Leonard Kirk, I believe, has done the majority of the artwork for this series so far, and I really appreciate the look he gives to the title and specifically to Laura. She’s treated with every ounce of power and intimidation that you expect of Wolverine and the sexy costumes or posing are brought down to a severe minimum. Really, his designs for everyone are great and service the action of the story well because with so many aliens and sceneries to be had, the precise and direct approach makes the comic easy to follow. And I like that it manages all that without sacrificing action scenes or Kirk’s own style.
It’s solid comic art through and through.
Characters & Dialogue: For the most part I’ve said everything that needs to be said in the story bit, but I need to again give accolades to Taylor here because of the subtle character growth he’s allowed for in the way Laura and Gabby’s world views are evolving.
The dialogue for the two of them is very specific to their characters, but now we’re starting to see the way that they talk is having an effect on the other. Laura has become more artfully expressive about her feelings and love of others, especially Gabby, which is a change that took a long time for her and also is something her father never quite learned as well. We are a long ways away from the Laura who was ready to give Gabby up to the Jean Grey school and not look back. Likewise, Gabby has become more stern, more encouraged. She relies on Laura and believes in her so much that she doesn’t fear, another far cry away from the Gabby who was abused and misused by the lab that created her.
Basically the characterization isn’t just good, it’s subtle and full of depth beyond what people would be expecting from a giant space opera adventure trying to avoid a storyline centered around Captain Fascism.
DC’s Detective Comics (2016-present) #962 James Tynion IV, Alvaro Martinez, Raul Fernandez, Brad Anderson
So, I think my Roundups are a pretty fair record for how tumultuous my relationship has been over time with Detective Comics. It’s a comic and characters I love fiercely but it’s also often subject to fair criticism of being fairly unpolished, rushed, and just generally misses a mark from time to time that’s just difficult to overcome.
A mixed bag if you will.
And we’re coming to the close on this particular storyline “Intelligence” and I think it’s as good of a place as any to really get into the nitty gritty of what the pros and cons of this Detective Comics run is.
Story: I only recently have begun reading Jean Paul’s original solo series Azrael thanks to DC’s new campaign to volumize old comics and it’s been a surprising read. But I’ve always been familiar enough with him as a character to be fairly curious about what more stories centered around him -- and not Azabats him but him him -- would be like. And I’ve stated before that I enjoy seeing the development of his friendship with Luke and would love to see it feature more prominently.
And in all those respects, I feel like this conclusion and really this whole storyline paid very good tribute to Azrael and Jean Paul in ways that even contemporaries of Denny O’Neil tended to miss the mark on. The complexity of his relationship with religion while also dealing with the additional stress and pressure that has placed on him with his abusive past, the allusions to mental illness which serve throughout his stories. And really just Jean Paul getting a chance to be a character in a way he certainly wasn’t in his re-introduction through Batman and Robin Eternal worked out very well with me. And I’m grateful that his injury in this battle and his paralysis are not going to be immediately erased while they do acknowledge that in this universe that’s a possibility.
I don’t really like the state reasoning for the decision or the near certainty that his disability will eventually be “overcome” but it’s better than the nothing that DC has basically given us in the way of the major titles for a while now.
Plus, consequences! It’s nice to have consequences that matter.
The magic part... well I enjoy Zatanna as a character to an extreme degree so my ability to be completely unbiased here was always going to be difficult. But this is one story where the magical elements being blended in with the spiritual.. I’m not really sure if it worked for me. It’s nice to see Zee, but in an ensemble book I’m getting a little tired of all the excuses being fit into the narrative to excuse not ever actually being about the ensemble.
oh look tim’s alive and ra’s al ghul’s behind it all who saw this coming
At least we don’t have another new made up organization that secretly spans across the whole world and Batman didn’t know about it ever. At least they’re finally converging a bit because that shit was getting ridic.
Art: Of the rotating art teams that we have for Detective, I have to say that this is one of the best and most consistent. There’s a good variation between splash pages and regular paneled format, there’s a proper use of shifting and varying panel differing. And overall it’s just a pleasing comic to read with easy action to follow and a great use of color and inking despite being a literally dark comic.
It is not the most stylized comic for those who prefer styles that are Out of House as opposed to the Big Two’s normal aesthetic, but it is a good comic and easy to read without being redundant.
Characters & Dialogue: Detective Comics has way too many characters. Tynion gives all of them good voice, and everyone who’s featured gets quite a lot to do, but there is not enough balance for the ensemble and the constant addition of new characters, new villains, etc. makes even less room for development and especially for relationship building between characters.
Like I guess Cass is just the only kid in the Belfry period now. Alright.
Cass, Kate, Luke, and... *sigh* Clayface have very little to do in this issue, though I’d argue that their small parts are some of the best content when one’s reading. And while it’s more than okay to center different arcs on different characters and Jean Paul getting his long, long overdue dues is more than welcome, there’s still the problem of giving everyone something that pushes their own plots forward, or at the very least, let’s us see the progress that has been made as a culmination of the previous storylines.
Cassandra is still not even adopted by either Bruce or Kate yet for chrissake. Someone give Cass a family.
Zatanna was good and if I have to measure a Bruce this Bruce is good for my tastes, but again there’s just so many characters it’s very difficult to fully dive into their various developments, especially when it’s hard to tell if there is one.
At the very least, I can give this comic thanks for getting Cass’ speech pattern back to normal. I have to agree with some other fans who have contacted me and said that it’s not too terrible if from time to time Cass learns and memorizes a Shakespeare verse thanks to her time with Clayface, but not showing any of the characters working with Cass to teach her to read and speak and then giving her full sonnets or soliloquies is way too much and is painfully out of character to read.
DC’s Gotham Academy: Second Semester (2016-present) #12 Brenden Fletcher, Karl Kerschl, Becky Coloonan, Adam Archer, MSASSYK, Sandra Hope
After a few years of this fun, YA tale of mystery and friendship, we sadly come to a close on Gotham Academy with this final issue wrapping up the series that was very beloved by myself and a number of my comic reading friends here on the internet. It’s a different type of story in the landscape of DC’s Batbooks and it’s going to very much be missed, regardless of how well or not this last issue was going to do.
But, with this cancelation, did the finale manage to feel like it came to a conclusive resolution for all of our favorite Gotham Academy kids?
Story: Given that this is the finale of both this storyline and for the series as a whole, going into story is a much bigger deal than it has been before. I mean, we’re talking about a narrative that really started back with Gotham Academy (2014-2016) and has come to its end here, a reboot and a year later. And it all, as it should have, revolved around the titular friendship between Olive Silverlock and Maps Mizoguchi.
Of course all the friendships, all the support that has been built up for Olive throughout the series still play a fairly important role to her conclusion here, but it was always going to be the friendship that held Olive and Maps together that would be what drove the story at its core, and in that way this ending doesn’t feel forced or strained, but simply like a natural testing of friendship when both have made mistakes and are wrong for various reasons -- for Maps it was coming to terms with her treatment of Olive’s mental illness and accepting her for it rather than simply ignoring that it was a factor, and for Olive it was about relying on Maps and trusting her to be there for her whenever she should fall.
That is what affects the narrative the most and that’s what the resolution to this story got right the most here.
Still, the cancelation of GA has come at the cost of the resolution of a lot of other elements that had been built up over the series. An unfortunate affect of having spent so much of the bulk of the series building up the world, the supporting characters, and more for what was no doubt many more mysteries and subplots to come, but it’s ultimately a little lost here. Colton’s confession to Kyle doesn’t see some real focus in the finale due to time and that’s made all the more a painful thing to see cut short considering the confirmed LGBT+ elements of Gotham Academy never received direct attention in ways I know I wish I could have seen. And likewise some resolutions felt missed entirely or unnecessary, Tristan’s apparent comfort with his bat form by the end as an example of the former and Pomeline being in a romantic relationship again with oh-whats-his-beard in the final pages.
I would not have wanted any of the final issue’s focus to have left Maps and Olive at all, as I’ve said, they are the driving force of this comic, but as understandable as it is that these shortcomings happened under the circumstances, they’re still shortcomings nonetheless.
The one that’s the most glaring, however, is the way that Olive’s disdain and distrust of Batman ended up coming to an end here. This is a character trait that was built up with Olive since the first issue of the series, and that relationship complicated between her, her mother, Batman, and Bruce Wayne, began dropping off the radar the moment we came into Second Semester and became more and more lost only to give us this moment in the finale where she comes to terms somehow with the fact that Batman was just trying to save her mom? I don’t know.
Speaking of which, this all coming down to magic and a secret society using Olive’s ancestral blood to control her or whatever reminded me exactly of when I was watching Scooby-Doo: Mystery Incorporated for the first time and I adored that first season SO much and loved how it stuck to the tried and true Scooby-Doo formula of skepticism winning over superstition and the paranormal, only for the second season to... make a 180 and everything was due to magic after all. That’s kinda how I felt about Gotham Academy, we spent the first series constantly solving mysteries of Gotham Academy through the eyes of the Mystery Club and time and time again the lesson seemed to be that the legends and tribulations of the people at the heart of these things were just that -- they were people and they were real, and their problems paralleled the cast’s for that reason.
Only for that to be somewhat wasted due to the fact that... it was all nobody’s fault and the strings were being pulled by the occult the first series had proved were false. And I suppose that’s okay, save for how it feels as though it tries to use this to wave off the genuine symptoms of mental illness Olive has shown throughout the series.
It’s something I’ll have to chew on for a while, honestly. It’s given me a lot of complicated feelings.
Art: Ah, the most contentious part of the series has been the massive shift in art. Karl Kerschl was the original artist for the first few volumes of Gotham Academy and his style remains a truly unique, very stylized, and very character driven style which was a huge contributing factor to launching Gotham Academy and getting it off its feet with a unique flare to draw in audiences that weren’t necessarily picking up other Batman books at the time. And his presence has been missed since he left the book, without a doubt. I’ve had people tell me personally that a big reason for dropping the book when they did had to do with the change up in art.
I’m not condemning Adam Archer here for not being Kerschl, make no mistake. What I think has truly hurt this book, however, is that Archer either chose or was directed to attempt Kerschl’s style as close as possible which comes off as not feeling natural to Adam Archer’s own talents. That’s unfair because Archer’s work is unique, fun, and lovely n its own without this attempt to mimmic a style that was less his own. I think we would have all appreciated the art more in that respect, since other guest artists between the two like Chen were better received for their issues.
That being said the art for this issue is not bad, but it’s not great, and missing that feeling of sincerity that was connected to by so many readers before.
Characters & Dialogue: Considering how character driven this series is, it’s fair to say that the characterization and dialogue of these new Gothamites is unquestionable. They were always well rounded, interesting, and full of intrigue, and all the way to this conclusion, that remains to be the case. The big difference here would be that because we needed to focus on Olive and Maps, the other members of the Mystery Club were less involved than I would have liked though they very much did at least get to play a part in stopping Calamity (pun intended).
The good thing about having a single team writing from the very start of the book is that we get very strong voices throughout for all of the characters, and that remained true to the very end as well. Really, the characters were the best part and it made this feel like a very deserving farewell to our Gotham Academy family.
Marvel’s Immortal Iron Fists (2017) #2 (of 6) Kaare Andrews, Afu Chan, Shelly Chen
Well, guys, never say that change isn’t real and tangible, because it almost looks like Marvel learned something from the reception of Immortal Iron Fist on Netflix and is creating a legacy from the title that shock of all shocks actually contains Asian characters for once. I know, I was stunned as well.
In all seriousness, I was super interested in this series when I first saw it with issue #1 but hadn’t bought it by the time I was doing my weekly reviews for that week. Obviously, that has since then been remedied and has left me open for a good ol’ review of the new Marvel Infinite series Immortal Iron Fists.
Story: We’re still very much in the early part set of this story, which is a combination of Danny trying to navigate the trials of adulthood while being a complete human disaster, Pei is attempting to fit in her new public school which is middle school and thus inherently filled with racist little sociopaths in training just like real life high school, and also about the two Iron Fists trying to harness all of these magic scrolls which are currently possessed by demons which increase in power each scroll before culminating into this Mega Awful Demon that is the mortal enemy of the Buddah.
So yes. Immortal Iron Fists is basically ripping off Jackie Chan Adventures and believe it or not I am absolutely fine with that, in fact I think it might be the most fine I have been with a Marvel concept in ages. It’s like making Laura Wolverine, creating Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur, and now this. There, I had my arm twisted and admitted there are positive things about Marvel this week.
The story itself is a very soft, even light narrative considering the complexity of Pei’s origins and even her connection to Danny, but it’s also at the same time so fitting for what I assume is the intended audience (children and YA) and especially fitting with the art that is positively adorable and awesome.
In this issue Pei makes her first friends, learns that there is a string of missing cases, and also decides that unlike everyone else in middle school she’s not going to be a “key to a single door” but keep all her doors open and try to bridge the gap between the various cliques, who were introduced to us Mean Girls style and it was hilarious.
It’s just a fun read overall, but it’s also a fairly quick read so given that ever high Marvel price tag it’s hard to argue with the assessment that this one could be a trade wait for a lot of you.
Art: As I mentioned before, the art is very soft, gentle, and light. The colors pop, everyone is incredibly stylized, and the action scenes are surprisingly varied and plentiful. While they’re still simple enough to read for beginning comic readers, there is a flow to them, such as the sequence where Pei gets some revenge on some bullies at school through one extended fight sequence across a panel.
I just really enjoyed the art and I’m glad to see so much variation in comic art lately. It’s been a long time coming.
Characters & Dialogue: Pei and Danny are the focus of the comic, obviously, and they play their roles incredibly well. Danny is ... I mean, he’s Danny Rand, he’s a complete disaster of a human being trying to Adult it with an inheritance he never cared about or really earned and as such everything rolls in and catches up with him. He literally can’t teach Pei how to clean the house without tripping on soap, and I feel like that is a perfect summation of everything anyone has ever needed to know about Danny Rand.
In contrast, Pei is a reserved little girl, fish out of water, and drowning in a culture she has no familiarity with while also harnessing power and skills beyond her years. What I find interesting and subversive about this, though, is that Pei neither yearns for normalcy nor does she completely rebel openly against Danny’s orders for her to restrain herself and act normal. It’s honestly a relief to have a character whose problems are so relatable and have her just... treat it with the actions of a kid in the moment: uncertain but trying to play everything out until she decides she doesn’t fit the necessary mold. And she’s pleased with herself for not fitting the mold. It’s honestly kind of inspiring to see that in a kid character these days.
But the big part of this issue was arguably building up the supporting cast, including the nanny Danny has hired for Pei and most of all the kids in Pei’s school. And how there’s apparently no point to her hiding her identity as the tiniest Iron Fist. It’s well paced and all the kids, right down to their overwhelming cruelty to their surprising generosity, are definitely acting like kids.
Dark Horse’s The Legend of Korra: Turf Wars (2017-present) Part One Michael Dante DiMartino, Irene Koh, Vivian Ng
Ah, at long last!
While I was not in on the hype for The Legend of Korra as it was airing, my appreciation for what it’s become has grown over time, and more importantly, I fnd that it provides more possibilities and more opportunity to the world of Avatar, which is always a good thing.
As such, I’ve been waiting for this comic series to come out for quite some time! ... and then had to wait longer because for Reasons we don’t get the comiXology release at the same time as the regular issue’s release in stores. Oh, Dark Horse.
But now to get into the specifics.
Story: It’s always difficult to gage story with just the first issue, but in all honesty I think that the fact that the TV series ended on such an open note really helps the comic in this matter. “Turf War” is an interesting name for the story, but at the same time it’s oddly blunt and fitting. There is a war erupting between the Spirit World, the human lands and property settlement, and with the ever present Republic City triad gang wars. We follow all of these through the Krew members who are exactly where we last left off with them.
Some of the stuff that deserves a lot of attention is the cementation of Korra and Asami’s romantic relationship, which is given a good amount of page time for the first half of the book. They confess true feelings for each other, share a first kiss, have a beautiful vacation together, and we ultimately get to see Korra’s blunt and protective nature play out accordingly. She rushes in to Asami’s aid and frets over her pretty consistently, which could be seen as a callback to the series itself when, as Korra was most down, Asami cared for and nurtured her.
We also get to see Mako and Bolin working together as partners in the Republic City police. They deal with the triads and the general unrest that has come about as a result of Spirits and Humans openly interacting again for the first time in centuries. And this honestly felt like some greatly due development for the brothers’ relationship since in the series it felt like they had grown apart without it ever being explicitly addressed in the text.
And while all this turf grabbing is happening, we also see a parallel drama being played out. And that would be the story of how Korra and Asami choose to come out to their friends, family, and even the world. As usual, Korra barrels in half cocked and not thinking of repercussions, figuring “damned if anyone judges me” whereas Asami is more thoughtful, planning, and reserved. She’s nervous about coming out to people, and she’s nervous about how boisterous Korra is being about it.
But they haven’t communicated this detachment between their processing of the situation yet. It’s fairly obvious that a portion of Turf Wars is going to come to a head with Asami and Korra having to address being respectful of each other’s needs to come out in their own ways first.
In any case, it was a real great start and had lots of little moments to help explain the world without acting as though the intended audience wouldn’t have some more than passing knowledge about what was coming up.
Art: One of the most widely praised and beloved aspects of The Legend of Korra from the very start had been the beauty of its animation, so much so that the same animation house got to move on to other passion projects like the current reboot of Voltron. And one of the things that makes the world of Avatar so unique is that aspect of Eastern philosophy combined with different disciplines which inspire the forms of bending in the series. And, as was pretty clearly seen before in the Avatar: The Last Airbender comics, that is not something that is easy to translate into a more still and less fluid medium like comics.
And that mostly goes the same here. There’s a distinct lack of bending compared to what you would see in an episode of the show, but at the same time that isn’t to say that there isn’t a lot more than I thought there was. It simply did not have that many creative takes on what to do with the bending. No splash shots into the next panels, no using the elements to transition. The sort of things you’d expect from a comic inspired by a show which was all about the uniqueness of bending.
Still, the comic did a fair job of keeping to the style of the series without the character art seeming stagnant and stationary which is usually a problem with cartoons that are adapted into comics. Hair in particular was treated with much more fluidity than I remember the show being able to give it. And the styles of the various nations and cultures were well designed while also fitting.
Everything was well compositioned and especially the events which took place within the Spirit World were beautifully colored, though that came at the seeming cost of a duller color pattern used in the “normal” world.
It’s a good start, and I’d argue it’s better than if it had tried to strictly stay to only the style of the series and not rely on the personal style of the artist.
Characters & Dialogue: Given that this is an ensemble story and there was a limited amount of time to dedicate to each of the characters, we did not get as much individual development for the wider cast. But Korra and Asami got relatively large roles and since they and their relationship seems to be the driving force of the narrative, it worked out well for this issue.
Korra was brash to a fault, but as always it is her conflict and emotions and her validity that moved the plot forward. For a character it is always important that her purpose and her growth be the defining force. And I think we definitely got that.
Asami on the other hand was the quieter personality, yes, but her hesitation and temperance also did a lot to build suspicion for future conflict in the relationship between her and Korra and also in just the world itself. Her perspective and her concerns are as real and as valid as Korra’s which means that our concerns for their coming out narrative are validated here, too.
The dialogue is a bit harder to pin here, as again there aren’t many characters with specific inflections that really pop out, so we’ll have to wait for more issues to get a larger grasp on how the dialogue changes between characters.
Marvel’s Silk (2015-2017) Vol. 3: The Clone Conspiracy Robbie Thompson, Irene Strychalski, Tana Ford, Ian Herring
I can’t believe I’m having to say goodbye to so many books this week. It’s like my personal Cancellation Day, and the only prize is disappointment that more series I enjoyed aren’t coming my way. I’m supremely sad to see Silk go, as Cindy Moon is a hugely inspirational and important character both for being an Asian-American superhero with her own book and for narratively dealing with anxiety in depression.
And it’s also extremely sad to see her go on what was mostly tie-ins to yet another endless Spider Event. I won’t be going into a full review for that reason, it just doesn’t seem fair to recap the end of the series knowing that a lot of the context for The Clone Conspiracy is not included in this book, nor should it really have been, but I do want to say to fellow Silk fans that there’s enough of Cindy and enough closure to her narrative that it will be worth your collection and time, but yeah there will be some lackluster stuff in the majority of the issues in this since it is a tie-in.
And I hate that, I hate how much endless tie-ins have felt like they’re killing books lately.
But Robbie Thompson was a fantastic, thoughtful, and well articulated writer throughout this series and for Silk before this series, really making her a real character where her initial introduction was... not that... ugh pheromones and gross twitter trolls. Anyway, Robbie Thompson truly made a character to love in Cindy Moon, and the two artists who contributed throughout the series -- Irene Strychalski and Tana Ford did amazing very stylized work and weren’t afraid to experiment with style and page correlation.
It was a great read and I’m going to miss it a whole lot.
DC’s Titans (2016-present) #14 Dan Abnett, Brett Booth, Norm Rapmund, Andrew Dalhouse
Hello, world, it’s me, the Titans fan who wished upon the monkey’s paw that her favorite heroes would be restored to their former glory and that their friendship would be allowed to flourish on the page once again. And in return I got Roy’s stupid hat.
But in truth, I’ve been fairly pleased with Titans since the very first issue in Rebirth and have felt taken aback by just how much the creative team seems to love the characters, their relationships, and their history. But now we’ve got to answer that ultimate question: a year later with those rosy tinted glasses still firmly on my face, am I starting to eep out of the honeymoon phase? Or it this book still living up to unrealistic expectations?
Story: We’re in the middle of the sleeper agent storyline and it’s probably more difficult to gage how good a story is doing by its middle than it is by its start, in all honesty. All the same, the distrust running through the Titans, the pain of conflict and second guessing each other’s friendships and so on. It’s not a bad way to flesh out the arc, and I wouldn’t say that like a lot of storylines’ mid-issues this one felt useless or flat.
There is a definite escalation throughout the issue of how the Titans are beginning to fold in on each other, how HIVE’s master plan to destroy them from the inside may be working before we ever get confirmation about a betrayer. And the testing of the relationships among the Titans in that delicate web they weave cause everyone to trip over each other once they’re really put to the test.
That being said, it’s still not hitting all those points perfectly. While you can see an organic build to the relationship of Lilith and Garth that’s been pretty fun and true to the characters so far, the love triangle between Wally, Donna, and Roy is something I’m pretty confident in saying no one wanted. I have seen no one say they wanted this. And weirdly it continues to put all the female characters in romantic relationships as the crux of their developments while we still have at least Dick and Gnarrk on the men’s side who don’t have to be motivated by this bull. The best part of the love triangle so far has been Donna throwing Roy and Wally both when she realizes what’s going on.
As for Dick being the sleeper agent well, I guess it’s one of those... shoulda seen it coming because of course we have Dick involved with another covert secret underground all powerful world corrupting group in another book. I don’t know why I was expecting different. But at least in the defense of Titans, it does feel like a good call back to the original New Teen Titans storyline with the cult of Brother Blood where similar happened and it was Dick again.
People just really like mindfucking with Dick, there’s not really much else to say about it.
Art: Ever since Brett Booth first appeared on my radar I’ve been fairly critical of him as an artist. His style was never really my taste, but he’s proven again and again on Titans to really pull some variation in body types and physicality that I hadn’t seen on his previous works. I like that the guys all have different body types and that the girls’ costumes and personality are reflections of themselves.
That being said, we still have a problem of Sameface with the girls at the very least, where honestly some panels the only difference between Donna and Lilith is hair color. But the colors are vibrant and the panels are all full of details, no space wasted.
Which is both a compliment and a criticism since, to be frank, the absolute refusal to have any normal panels basically gives us the opposite of my criticism of Turf Wars which is that there seems to be no real complexity because of the constant unstable panel work.
This is the comic book equivalent of shooting every scene in a movie with dutch angles. There’s no dramatic or narrative reason to have these panels slanted and all over the place, but every panel will be that way. Even panels where we’re literally reading the characters talking about pizza.
It gives us no real change between action sequences and normal sequences so it’s just kind of boring in spite of the dynamic panels. Which I’m pretty sure is the opposite of what they wanted.
Characters & Dialogue: If it wasn’t clear in the story portion, I’m not a fan of how when it comes to individual character development, we have conveniently gotten all three of our female heroes into romantic subplots with at least one (now possibly two? if we’re hinting at Tula like I think we are) love triangles in the mix. It just feels like it’s 2017 and we should be beyond that sort of “what kind of subplot do we give the girls? love I guess”
That being said, it’s really been amazing to me, personally, to see just how good this comic continues to be at making these characters feel like the ones we knew and loved prior to the New52. Not exact, not perfect, but pretty close to the preferences for each of the characters as we can get with the current character histories being what they are. Like, personally, I’m much more enthusiastic about Dick and Wally in this book than I am about them in Nightwing and The Flash because it just feels like them, Wally’s current romantic entanglements aside.
Still, it’s a fun book and for what it lacks with some characterization quirks it always tends to make up for later in the story so for the current storyline I’m willing to wait a touch longer.
IDW’s Transformers: Till All Are One (2016-2017) #12 Mairghread Scott, Sara Pitre-Durocher, Joana Lafuente
Wow. Another one of my favorite ongoings is ending today and I’m starting to worry it’s me. I hope I’m not actually the kiss of death to these comics because, full stop, Windblade and Till All Are One have been some of the most enjoyable comics I’ve read in the last several years and there’s probably no comic getting canceled this year that makes me sadder than this one.
So, how does Till All Are One leave us?
Story: Mairghread Scott has absolutely blown me away over the last year with her comics and just her obvious, obvious love and understanding of the expansive Transformers universe. Her world building has spanned over several series now and her character work has truly been put to task by having to stand up against fan favorite TF writers like John Barber and James Roberts. And I think nothing has proved her talents more than Till All Are One, where all that build up and all that character work is allowed to at long las come to fruition.
This conclusion could have been use to tease us with the ideas and storylines that Scott obviously had planned (and if people are curious I really encourage you to look up the storylines she had planned and posted to her tumblr), but Scott instead made this a solid ending and a celebration of the comic she was allowed to make. And much like Gotham Academy, she did so by bringing it back home to the characters which have driven the series the most: Windblade and Starscream.
The tumultuous relationship between the two same yet so very different jets has been something that I’ve adored watching play out. Their distrust of each other, their manipulations, their political games, and ultimately their teamwork for the greater good. It’s been fascinating and also has put me on the edge of my seat.
There is nothing more uncharacteristic, nothing more selfless than what Starscream did by putting his own life at risk in order to save Windblade, and the fact that Windblade at last got the confirmation she’s desired about Starscream’s true self feels like a great resolution to all the buildup over the years. This is a very triumphant ending, to the point that 80s Business Woman style Windblade ended by strutting out the door.
I sincerely hope we are going to be blessed with more of Scott’s signature Transformers writing in the IDW’verse and I desperately hope that this is not the end of Windblade who has quickly risen as one of my favorite Transformers.
Art: The majority of the artists on the Transformers titles for IDW are honestly so good and so amazing that I barely know what even to say about the art. The art standard for bringing these robotic transforming cars with heart is so high that it leaves one baffled when it comes to what’s left to say about them, any of them. And even with that standard, Sara Pitre-Durocher manages to amaze me.
Of the Transformers artists I would say her style serves to be the most sleak and the most expressive. Theres not necessarily any time where you think of the Transformers as being “soft” or “pliable” -- they’re still metal and wires with all the complexity therein -- but there’s a believability to the phrase “living metal” that doesn’t always come across in some other artist’s work where the bulk and construction of the Transformers seems more prominent than their expressionism and agility.
The fact that this book gets to at least end with having had consistently amazing art throughout is a highlight and why I think it’s going to be one of the titles returned to the most fondly of the IDW’verse.
Characters & Dialogue: Starscream’s duplicity is his most iconic character trait, of course, and I’ll be the first to say I’m sort of worn out with classic villains being “reexamined” and given redemptions and whatnot these days, but I love how malicious and cruel Starscream has remained in this series while simultaneously showing us and himself through Windblade and Till All Are One the kind of character he could aspire to be (hello Armada allusions) and therefore making it more frustrating and even tragic when he boldly makes the decision to be the opposite of his own potential.
Windblade on the other hand has grown as a character since we first met her. Her naivety and pure intentions have been warped and she now understands how to play the game of politics, but also what it costs -- her honesty, her friends, her belief system. And she was willing to sacrifice herself despite learning all of that -- she was willing to put herself in mortal danger knowing that it wasn’t a perfect, harmonious society she was doing it for but a deeply flawed one. And the fact that she ultimately survived and is now capable of moving forward for herself with the new ambition of being open and speaking for herself more than being a figuehead or politician feels like an arc that was built up to through all this time and yet at the same time was something surprising and unexpected.
Other characters didn’t really play much of a significant role in this ending, which puts it like a lot of the other story bookends this week where a large cast doesn’t really get to close out with homage to the majority of those characters. But this felt more solid, at least to me, because of the wisdom Scott had in using the last several issues to bring the focus in particular to Starscream’s POV and then building up to Windblade’s. It feels like what loose ends for other characters are left are left in ways that are going to be easily picked up by another book or by another creative team entirely rather than everything simply being cut off.
Just an awesome book and I’m so sorry to see it come to an end.
It’s another difficult pick of the week but for me, I absolutely have to give this one to Transformers: Till All Are One. It’s one of my favorite series in a long time and it ended on a resolution that made me honestly puff up with pride for the main characters. It’s a comic which embraces history of its franchise while growing it, a comic that embraces questions of politics, identity, gender, sexuality, and more. It’s been a beautiful ride and I wish the best to the entire creative team.
But I thought all the comics were great this week and highly recommend you check them out! Of course I’d love to hear back from you -- agree with me? Disagree? Think I missed any comics I should’ve picked up? I’d love to hear from you.
Before you go, however, I need to share that I am in a bit of a financial crunch for a multitude of reasons, not the least of which being the medical bills I’m paying for my dog, Eve, who experienced a catastrophic dog fight and underwent surgery just yesterday actually.

spoilers abt Cassidy and Denis for Preacher s2ep8:
“Preacher also digs into the severely broken relationship between Cassidy and Dennis as the episode takes a heartbreaking turn toward the end...As Dennis deteriorates in front of Cassidy’s eyes, the centuries old vampire begins to have second thoughts about turning his son. This softer side of Cass is such a contrast to the fly-by-the-seat-of-his-pants Cass that we’ve come to know. While he may not have been there for his son (who was born in 1946), it’s understandable that it pains him to see his child suffering like this. He patiently cleans up after Dennis, calls doctors for him, and listens even when being berated (in French). By the end of “Holes,” a sinister demeanor has set in and we get the feeling he’s going to help Dennis one way or another.“ [x]
