AMC’s Preacher is now on Netflix, so I am re-watching the whole series! The series has everything I love horror, vampires, dark comedy, gore, the supernatural, demons, angels, god as a character, superpowers, and badass women characters.

So I finished Midnight Mass 2 weeks ago, and I just want to put a thought out about it.

Riley as recovering addict turned (against his will) vampire reminded me of Proinsias Cassidy from Preacher. Cassidy’s way of dealing with being a vampire was similar to how some people in recovery smoke cigarettes as a replacement, he used hard drugs and drank instead of drinking blood, unless absolutely necessary. It *seemed* like he was addicted to drugs and alcohol, but those were his crutches to keep from the thing he really wanted, but should not want. He would feed on animals, attackers, etc if injured, and later we saw him drinking blood bags. He did his damnedest not to hunt people unless they tried to hurt him or his friends.

Riley’s willpower was so strong, he decided he just wouldn’t be, if that was what he was going to have to be to stay alive. Because he knew he would hurt people, and he didn’t want to do that again. It felt like the other side of the coin, to me.

Anyway, I come from a family of addicts, and I always pay close attention to the ways they’re portrayed (fuck you The Magicians & The Umbrella Academy.) So it’s always refreshing to see an addiction story told with care and deep insight, like these two.
