The last US House race in the 2024 election has been decided, and the seat is a flip for Dems. Adam Gray has defeated incumbent Republican John Duarte in CA-13.
Democrat Adam Gray, a former five-term Assemblymember who lost a bid for Congress in 2022, has unseated incumbent Rep. John Duarte (R-Modesto) in the closest House race — and the last to be called — in the nation this election cycle. Duarte, a farmer turned politician, phoned his challenger just after 5 p.m. to concede the race. “That’s how it goes,” said Duarte, who fell 187 votes short of retaining his seat in the 13th Congressional District. “I’m a citizen legislator, and I didn’t plan on being in Congress forever. But whenever I think I can make a difference, I’ll consider public service in different forms, including running for Congress again.” Duarte defeated Gray by 564 votes two years ago in what was then the second-closest race in the nation. “The Congressman was very gracious and I appreciated the call,” said Gray. “We had a quick chat. He wanted to make sure that we don’t drop any of the work already done here in the Valley.”
At least Duarte wasn't a sore loser like Trump in 2020.
The official margin won't be published until Thursday but it probably won't be far from the current 187.
So with the victory of Adam Gray in California, this leaves Republicans with 220 House members and Democrats with 215. This represents a gain of 2 seats for Dems over the 2022 House results.
But because of the departure of Matt Gaetz, the GOP will begin the 119th Congress with just 219 seats. And with the departure of Mike Waltz (FL-06) and Elise Stefanik (NY-21) to join the Trump administration in the winter, the GOP will be down to 217 seats.
CA-13 was one of three House races to be decided by fewer than a thousand votes. 187 is below the number of students in my HS graduating class.

So keep CA-13 in mind if you know anybody who claims that their vote doesn't count.

It feels like I'm reliving 2016 and Democrats instead of trying to appeal to would-be voters are just screaming at them to vote.

At her graduation dinner last night my sister’s boyfriend said “If I lived in America I would vote for him!” and it took all my energy to not launch over the table and rip out his throat like a jaguar

there’s a whole lot about last night’s debate that still has me reeling from the sheer absurdity of it all but the fact that harris thinks that being pro fracking is gonna be a good strategy among democratic voters is genuinely insane to me. communities near oil fracking sites are at risk for all sorts of health problems and given current climate developments, a ban on fracking is the LEAST we can do to steer ourselves away from total environmental disaster.

Trump's Troubles in Georgia
An investigation by Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis led to a massive racketeering case that charged 19 individuals, including Trump, with plotting to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election in Georgia.
Tumblr media
So far, four people indicted have reached plea deals with Fulton County prosecutors. Former Trump attorneys Jenna Ellis, Sidney Powell, Kenneth Chesebro, and former Atlanta bail bondsman Scott Hall, all pled guilty to lesser crimes in exchange for no prison time — and for their testimony to flip against Trump.
Trump's defense weakens as Willis' case gains momentum.
Tumblr media
CNN reported that six additional defendants have discussed plea deals with Fulton County prosecutors to flip on Trump. And there's speculation that Mark Meadows, Trump's former Chief of Staff, who is also charged in this case, may be among the next defendants to flip on the former president.
The strategy of Ms. Willis is clear — get as many co-defendants as possible to flip against Trump, with each new flip adding to the weight of evidence against him.
As Trump's defense strategy begins to crumble, when things start going badly for the former president, Trump is gonna wonder why the trial went so wrong, asking his attorneys, "Hey, what happened?"...
"...flip, flip, flip, flip, flip, flip, flip, flip, flip." [unmute😄]

« Democrats must do more to communicate that Republicans are sabotaging the country because Trump told them to. Democrats spent a few days pointing out that Republicans themselves admitted they iced the deal to help Trump politically. But they mustn’t let this drop. Keep saying it. »
— Greg Sargent at The New Republic.
Republicans demanded a border deal. And when they got one, they torpedoed it on Trump's orders.
Dems need to get better at messaging and this situation offers a marvelous opportunity.
Here are some phrases which could be used...
Republican border crisis
Republican migration mess
Trump migrant encampment
GOP forced busing of migrants
Don't just use those (or your own) once and think you've solved the problem. Effective messaging involves constant repetition. Liberals seem to have a problem with repetition. But repetition is how you sell things. And the strategy for selling ideas is not radically different from the strategy for selling detergent. When people hear a phrase often enough they begin to think it on their own.
In general, Republicans aren't interested in governance but instead wish to conduct an eternal culture war. We should use the Republican border crisis to put them on the defensive in their own war.

All the Wine-Moms are Still Holdin' Out
but fu(k ’em, it’s over. from Brandi Carlile the day after the GOP swept the 2024 election: Here are her texts: “The messages I’m reading are so inspiring you guys… People talking about diving into books and getting on the floor with their kids. Shaking off the rhetoric and fear. Remember 2016 when we started hearing stories of people bumping into Hillary out in the woods with her dogs? She…

Flip your state! Go vote! Together we’ve got this.
Also, if you live in a blue state, don’t be complacent. Go vote! It’s not just the presidential election at stake here.
hey my besties who live in red states: id like you to go out and vote anyway.
yeah, the electoral college means your vote doesn't count unless you win your state. it's a terrible undemocratic bullshit system. it's not going to change before this election,* so there isn't much point in complaining about it right now.
if you hold the belief that there's no point in voting because your voice will just be downed out by a chorus of bigotry- chances are other people in your state feel the same way. and because those people are not voting, it's impossible to know how many of you there are. the reason it's important to vote EVEN WHEN YOU KNOW YOU ARE GOING TO LOSE is to make this number public.
when the minority in a state still goes out to vote:
- other members of the minority party know they aren't alone in their state. this encourages MORE people to vote in the next election
- the majority candidates are forced to divert some of their campaign resources away from swing states to secure a state they were already going to win
- the minority candidates are encouraged to spend some time campaigning in your state instead of abandoning it as a lost cause
- assuming you also vote in local elections, the minority is more likely to win representatives in the house
- who knows there might be so many of you that you fucking flip it by mistake
there has been a 700% increase in new daily voter registrations in the few days since Biden dropped out of the race.
thousands of people are deciding, right now, that voting is worth it. some of them live in your state. there is going to be a spike in blue votes across the country. this election is going to have the youngest voter turnout in history. this is the best possible time to join them. join us.
what have you got to lose? one afternoon?

Saw this in my Instagram feed
For real...
My optimism, as of now (7:54 a.m. November 5th, 2024), remains strong that this nation will deny the fascists their much-desired victory while the realist in me steels for the likelihood of election violence and a result that, while it will show Harris having won, it will have still been embarrassingly close and not the utter rout it should've been

This is the second time in my voting history that I’ve participated in flipping a red seat in Alabama for Democrats (the previous time being my beloved Doug Jones) so it’s always funny to see people turn around and say voting doesn’t matter when I’ve seen it twice in the past ten years flip seats in what is supposed to be safe Republican country. Republicans are digging their own grave with their radicalization and it is making them lose (and with your help we can make them lose harder). Vote.
