Ok so for those who didn't see the news, recently 5 rich people went “””missing””” (they're totally fucking dead) in a “Titanic tourist submarine”, basically made as a way rich people can tour (what's left of) the Titanic's wreckage for a small fee of $250,000 per person.

Anyways, setting aside the horrific implications of dying in a submarine at  13,000 feet (~4km) below sea level, the more I learn about this entire situation the more I become morbidly...amused??

so for starters, the submarine was literally the submarine from Iron Lung. its a metal cylinder with one singular porthole at the front of the vessel that is bolted shut from the outside, and has no seats, its literally just a cylinder

the second thing you need to know is that this thing was wireless, as in it was being controlled from the surface and the people inside had no control, which is concerning in multiple ways because a ship this scuffed should have a safety cable leading to the “mothership” (basically if you've ever watched ocean documentaries and they always have that long cable attached to the sub, that's for in case the wireless control fucks up and they need it to be wired)

what makes this little fact so much more morbidly funny is that this thing was controlled using the remains of a Logitech Gamepad controller from ~2004/2005, a controller notorious for being one of the most clunky pieces of gaming equipment ever designed. so clunky in fact that few people even recognized it, originally mistaking it to be a combination of an Xbox 360 and a PS1 controller. estimated price of $30.

and to that my dear reader you would be correct! there are indeed submarines out there controlled with even simple joysticks, and using game controllers to control stuff like this isn't new (why do you think army recruiters prey on low GPA high school gamers to fly drones)

no you see the issue comes when you realize that what this sub was using to transmit controls. was fucking. STARLINK.

Yes, that's correct, Starlink, the service that can barely do its job on land was being used to transmit data through 2.5 miles (4km) of water, at a depth where anything that isn't highly pressurized is crushed instantly

And at the end of this, if some of you still feel bad for the rich people who spent a quarter of a million dollars to get bolted into a metal cylinder with no seats and a singular porthole that was being controlled by Elon Musk's barely functioning wireless service and one of the most notoriously clunky gaming controllers of all time that was probably bought from a thrift store, just know that it was most likely over quick. 

The likely thing that ended up happening was cabin depressurization, and at such a depth this means they were knocked unconscious by the rapid loss of pressure in the vessel almost instantly, and then shortly thereafter crushed by the weight of the ocean around them. 

Scientifically speaking, they were likely dead so fast that the brain likely couldn't even comprehend what was happening, the most they would've felt is a little pop in their ears for a fraction of a second.

yesyes i agree that the clones are the most tragic characters throughout all of star wars history, but other than being bred to be soldiers, i can't get over how YOUNG they really are. imagine cradling a dying clone in your arms, fully grown, but his face is that of a twenty-something year old. no wrinkles, no grey hair, maybe the odd scar or two. nothing but pure baby face, gushing with blood, swallowing down his last breaths whilst he scolds himself for failing the mission. a child destined for a painful death

Obviously a lot of season 2 focuses on Jinx's compassion and love and kindness, what with Sevika's new arm, getting her family back, and everything with Isha. But one scene that really struck me is when Ekko tries to talk her off that roof. She pulls the trigger again and again before he can even speak cause she knows he'll change her mind. But what struck out at me was that, when he complains about being blown up, she opts instead to throw herself from the roof. She had it all planned out but would choose to improvise rather than harm someone who considers her a loved one.

I've been hearing that a lot of manga readers are upset with yesterday's episode of Dandadan

SPOILERS FOR DANDADAN EPISODE SEVEN BELOW

I wanna start this off by saying I am not a manga reader. A friend of mine convinced me to watch the show and that's all I have been doing. I have not looked into the manga at all.

The reason why manga readers are upset is because during the backstory of the Acrobatic Silky, the anime doesn't show her dancing off the roof the same way the manga panel does.

In the manga, there is a panel that shows her leaping off the roof during her ballet performance. It's a gorgeous panel and is a full body shot of her. Whereas in the anime, it's a close up on her face. There's then a brief flash of her daughter before the screen cuts to black and there's a *thudding* sound effect of her body hitting the ground.

The reason why people seem to be upset is because it's apparently harder to gain the context that she jumped and committed suicide.

As someone who didn't read the manga and wasn't aware of this drama until my friend, who is a manga reader, told me about it, I knew exactly what was happening.

I'm not exactly sure why manga readers are upset with this choice but it was very well executed in my opinion. The scene was beautiful, heartfelt/breaking, and the animation was stunning.

I feel like the stylistic way they went for this episode felt the tone much better. The silky had her last thoughts be her daughter so of course, she should be the last thing shown before her death. That's all that mattered to her. That's all she cares about. She did everything for her daughter. When her daughter is gone, what else is there for her to do?

I know the Buckleys historically aren't great parents, but I was doing a writing exercise that had me writing 1. a first sentence about a birth and 2. a first sentence about a death and so naturally I made it about Buck. The sentences were shit and didn't quite technically comply but it got me thinking about...

Phillip and Margaret, along with Maddie who was not allowed in the delivery room but was allowed to wait just outside, all waiting in anticipation for Evan, their miracle baby, to take his first breath. He sure takes his sweet time, they all hold their own breath in anticipation, and sigh in relief and joy when he finally does take a breath. Then he lets out a succession of sharp cries, like he can already feel the weight of the expectations that were given to him before he even had a name.

Then, decades later, Buck dies for 3 minutes and 17 seconds. 3 minutes and 17 seconds without a heartbeat, without a single breath. Placed into a medically-induced coma. There they are again; Philip, Margaret, and Maddie. Waiting again for Buck to enter the world. To take his first breath. To give them a miracle. But this time, without any expectations; not as a savior, not for his DNA. Just as a son, as a brother. Just Evan. Just Buck.

Buck takes his first breath and they can all let out the breath they've been holding.

Maybe with this new life, they can finally get it right.

Death, to Sanji, is cruel.

It takes without consent, and it kills not just one but more. It kills the souls of those unfortunate enough to witness.

But, Death is also kind.

Death's hand is warm and calloused while Sanji's own is cold. The breeze makes him shiver. Only the breeze, he tells himself. Death stands beside him like a comforting weight leaning against his shoulder.

Sanji lets the weight settle and rest over his heart.

Death is still cruel, malicious and cold. But for now, Death is someone he loves and holds close to his heart as a cigarette hangs from his lips. Death breathes in the smoke as well. They're both addicted to the taste and smell even if it was in different ways.

They both stand there on the wooden floor of the deck silently.

Words aren't needed between them. Sanji knows his heart is possessed by Death. His heart is held and he knows one day it will be pierced through by the other's fingers.

For now, he finishes his cigarette, and enjoys the view of the rising sun with Zoro by his side.
