Problematic Faves Cliffs Notes: Harvey Dent/Two-Face

Batman (1980) #329

Summary: Once a crusading district attorney that worked alongside Batman and Jim Gordon to fight crime – now the duality-obsessed super criminal known as Two-Face.

Harvey Dent also serves as a dark reflection of Batman's own struggles living a dual life with conflicting identities.

Main Goal: To enact his own justice whilst committing crimes.

Fears: Uncertainty, himself in general [the things he's capable of, specifically], losing control, his loved ones dying, his darker half discovering Bruce's secret identity [Detective Comics (2016) #1021], Renee Montoya's rejection [Batman: No Man's Land, novel], and the Joker [Joker (2008), only].

Mindset: Sees himself bound by fate and its will. As a result of Harvey's black-and-white worldviews, he considers his two-headed (scarred on one side) silver dollar a truly objective instrument of justice due to it only yielding two simple, 50/50 outcomes at the end of every coin toss.

Pretty Chocolate/Happy Rainforests

Chocolate.

A sweet treat enjoyed in diverse ways across the globe. In the US it is a gift handed out on Halloween, a way to tell someone you love them, and an easy way to cheer up your friend after a breakup. In some ways, it feels like chocolate has always been there for me from childhood traditions to grown up bad days.

Unfortunately, chocolate isn’t immune to the negative aspects of globalization including environmental hazards and exploitative labor. In the age of globalization and knowledge overload, consumers have an ever increasing opportunity to make conscious consumption habits to combat human and environmental exploitation, or so they think.

In my liberal leaning college bubble of NW, DC, it feels like every decision my peers and I make is ultimately with a larger cause in mind—we eat less meat because it is better for the environment, we use metal straws so plastic waste is reduced, we even shop at woman owned coffee shops to combat economic inequality among genders. Because companies know people want to purchase products that seem to be better for the world, in order to make themselves feel like a conscious consumer (Johnston 2008), they purposefully market products to this target audience.

With this in mind I went to four sites in Northwest Washington, DC to see how chocolate is displayed. Although I might casually notice differences in chocolate bar packaging on my own, this detailed research is prompted by a class-assigned optical research project during which I made detailed observations and took photos.

After visiting each site once with the exception of Whole Foods where I went twice, I focused my analysis on chocolate packaging and its relationship to color and fair-trade or organic labels.

For the purposes of this research, chocolate is referring to chocolate in the form of bars or small packages intended for consumption as is—without baking, melting, dipping or other means of changing it. Chocolate is distinct from the umbrella term candy because it is made from the cocoa plant rather than being any random sugar product. Therefore, my research does not include other forms of chocolate like baking chips or hot chocolate because they serve a much different purpose than an individual chocolate does.

Chocolate is located in convenient, central areas in all of the sites I visited. It is often located near registers, making it easy for consumers to quickly be convinced to buy it. Each site had large amounts of chocolate, allowing for a diverse array of product available to consumers. Each chocolate, with different packaging, pricing, and flavor is before the consumer on a linear display, waiting to be selected. I did not witness anyone standing in the chocolate area at any of my sites for longer than a brief moment. Because there is such a great variety in the busy spaces near the registers at these sites, it appears the store is trying to cater to all kinds of chocolate buyers. If this is a transient space, people are likely not taking their time and looking at the variety—instead they might see a package or flavor they recognize and quickly grab it.

Which leads me to my next point, packaging is everything for a product that’s purchased impulsively.

As someone who studies the impact that colors and shapes have on viewers of the arts, analyzing the packaging that wraps chocolate bars for their travel from the manufacturing facility to a consumer’s hand. In the chocolate aisle, color is everywhere.

The color palettes in Whole Foods were earth tone across the board compared to the color palettes of chocolate in less natural stores. These earth tones often correlated with fair-trade and organic chocolate brands because the colors brown and green together invoke natural, earth-like imagery. These bars often had matte paper packaging which also contributes to a natural feeling that is less refined than shiny packaging. A good amount of chocolate at Whole Foods has a pattern with multiple colors that draw consumers eyes through out the display.

In CVS and Safeway, two everyday large name stores, the chocolate packaging was generally of a saturated monotone color such as orange, black, white, red, blue, or purple. I found that the chocolate that isn’t trying to be natural or good for the environment, and is simply upholding tradition like a Reese’s bar, follows traditional packaging colors. These chocolates likely stick to the colors they’re familiar with in order to easily direct consumers to them. In an array of so many options all you have to do is look for the orange packaging and you have your peanut butter cups. These chocolate bars come in shiny, plain packaging. They do not have much of a pattern or play with color palettes. Instead they sometimes have images of the main ingredient, or some other special embellishment.

Trader Joe’s is the one outlier of chocolate packaging because its chocolates combine styles typical of both fair-trade organic packaging and classic packaging. The most expensive chocolate in Trader Joe’s was visibly Swiss, and had bright monochrome packaging with simple bold lettering. These bars quickly caught my attention and held it as someone who appreciates a modest design. Beyond these bars, most of the Trader Joe’s chocolate labels were brown, black and deep purple or blue with very few embellishments on the packaging. For a store which has such beautiful themed packaging for other products, it was surprising to see that chocolate packaging was relatively simple. This could be because the product doesn’t require loud packaging in order to be bought—rather people are comfortable buying chocolate without embellishment here.

The last important comparison across all sites is the attention to fair trade and organic labels. Of all my sites, Whole Foods by far had the most options for consumers to feel good about their chocolate purchase.

Whole Foods aggressively plays in to the feel-good marketing game by not only displaying products which say fair trade, rainforest safe, and organic on them, but they also place their own tag below the product to make sure the “goodness” of the product is clear.

This tangibility for consumers, having the opportunity to visibly see the good they are doing for the rainforest and factory workers gives them the “warm glow” (Iweala, Meyerding, & Spiller, 2019) of feeling like they contributed to something bigger than themselves through the purchase of a chocolate bar. Further, consumers are willing to pay more for chocolate that is clearly labeled fair trade (Vlaeminck, Vandoren, & Vranken, 2016). In adding to Johnston’s argument about consumers voting for social and environmental change with their dollar, it is clear that chocolate provides a cheap way to do so at Whole Foods (2008).

Despite the potential “warm glow” (Iweala, Meyerding, & Spiller, 2019) achieved through fair trade purchases, the evidence that a consumer’s extra couple bucks for the sustainable purchase is slim. Scattergood’s brief article identifies potential for fair trade chocolate to be a complete illusion meant to take in more consumer revenue (2012).

The three other sites offered fewer fair trade or organic options. Safeway had a separate section of fair trade and organic next to the “non-warm glow” (Iweala et al., 2019) chocolate. This suggests the store has a variety of people shopping and wants to have an option for both concerned consumers and people who just want a Reese’s. Trader Joe’s did have one fair trade option but it blended in with the other chocolate—making it seem like fair trade wasn’t so relevant to Trader Joe’s shoppers. CVS did not have any fair trade chocolate.

Overall, my field work shows that stores in Northwest, DC provide a variety of chocolate catering to the diversity of consumers in the area. It makes sense that Whole Foods has a large amount of fair trade chocolate because this is the kind of consumer they attract. On the other hand, it makes sense that a store like CVS would not carry a selection of fair trade chocolates since they are not catering to this kind of consumer.

Chocolate remains one of my favorite products to buy with its bright, beautiful colors and inviting flavors. After all of this, as someone who likes buying actually sustainable goods, not relying on products Whole Foods tells me are good, I recommend to keep things local and buy some chocolate made close to home.

Support independent businesses and steer clear of the “fair trade” trap at locations like Whole Foods.

Kamen Rider 45th Anniversary File: Kiva

2008

Power Rangers Jungle Fury airs on Jetix and ABC Kids. Due to the writers strike of ‘08-’09, the series was rushed in certain periods of production and had problems behind the scenes.

Ishimori Productions celebrates what would have been Shotaro Ishinomori’s 70th birthday with special museum exhibits, merchandise and events throughout the year.

Kamen Rider returns to multi-series crossovers as Kamen Rider Den-O and Kiva: Climax Deka arrives in theaters.

SAVE THE LIFE! Tomica Hero: Rescue Force, another tokusatsu show made by Takara Tomy, airs. The show features Dairanger actor Keiichi Wada as a villain of the first story arc and Hiroaki Iwanaga aka the future Kamen Rider Birth as Captain Ishiguro/ R5!

Checkered Flag! Engine Sentai Go-Onger premieres on TV. This 32nd Sentai series was environmental and vehicle focused and had sentient vehicles that became the Zords, shrunk to become travel sized or had their “Engine Souls” placed in the transformation trinkets to talk to their partners.

Yes! Pretty Cure 5 concludes and its direct sequel Yes! Pretty Cure 5 GoGo! takes its spot on Sunday morning alongside Kiva and Go-Onger.

Ultra Galaxy Mega Monster Battle: Never Ending Odyssey, a sequel to Ultra Galaxy Mega Monster Battle, airs on Japanese Cable TV.

Superior Ultraman 8 Brothers premieres in theaters and is the most commercially successful Ultraman movie in franchise history. Sadly, this film was also the final bow of Ultraman showrunner Takeshi Yagi, as he retired from the franchise to do freelance work. Yagi worked as a director on Ultraman from the 1990s all the way until Mebius and Ultraseven X.

When asked what part of his drive for things like Kamen Rider was long ago, Shotaro Ishinomori said it was to tell “a kind of horror story” for children that everyone could appreciate. Using bits of darker elements and making frightful imagery appear without going overboard (the best horror uses subtlety and the timing of when and where to make the audience scream.)

With the “a kind of Horror” quote in mind, the next Rider was appropriately horror themed. As for motif...who better to choose than some of the classics?

Kiva’s main 4 forms are loosely based on four of the Universal Movie Monsters: Dracula, Frankenstein’s Monster, The Wolf Man and the Creature from the Black Lagoon! Kiva’s helmet also plays up the Halloween aspect, as according to a Net Movie and several Kamen Rider data file publications, Kiva’s helmet is based on a Jack ‘o Lantern.

Though Kiva is more drama with tragic romance than horror, but its the thought of the motif that counts.

The show also seemingly borrows elements from another famous vampire franchise in terms of music, one whose sorrowful violins make fans cry Bloody Tears. This series utilizes violin orchestral music in conjunction with rock music.

Another factor of music was the idea of creating an exclusive band for the show’s themes, Tetra-Fang! Terta-Fang was a limited rock group created by Avex specifically for the show with the main Rider actor himself Koji Seto as its lead singer. Tetra-Fang went on tour, sold multiple albums and did a Christmas concert before dissolving after the show ended.

In fact, Music is a recurring element of the series, from the violin that detects evil, the title cards referencing something related to music to some of Kivat’s history lessons on art before the show starts. This is a true symphony of the night.

Another interesting element of this show is it takes place in 2 different time periods. The events of each timeline line up to form the pieces of the puzzle of the show’s story and uncover the mysteries of the present day.

However, Toei also was still riding high on the popularity of Den-O and thus some of that show’s elements carried over into Kiva: a time travel plot at one point, monsters that altered the hero’s personality and changed his stats and a timid hero as the lead.

A minor complaint about this series is what is known as “Final Form Spamming”, as after Kiva unlocks Emperor form, it becomes the only form he uses and the rest are relegated to bit parts or not showing up at all. The behind the scenes reason is more understanding, as the Kiva suit was made with chromed metal parts as well as multiple layers that made the costume heavy. This is nothing new as the original Godzilla suit from the 1950s weighed 220 lbs and Haruo Nakajima suffered through it for the sake of art (almost killing himself in some cases), but most modern toku productions make a sincere effort to treat their suit actors with respect and ensure their safety and well being.

The Kiva suit strained Seiji Takaiwa’s body and limited his movement making it difficult for him to shoot scenes. So when it came time to create the Emperor form costume, PLEX and Rainbow Zoukei sculpted it so the suit would look incredibly detailed, but light in weight so Seiji could move freely in it. This resulted in Seji being able to do cool action scenes using his full range of motion that the other 4 suits could not achieve.

Another new thing taking the franchise by storm was the detailed and beloved collectible S.H. Figuarts, which served as a successor for the Shouchaku Henshin series toys.

S.H Figuarts got its start with shōnen action shows such as Kamen Rider, but later expanded into the collectible juggernaut monster we know it as today, covering everything from Dragonball Z to Marvel and DC Comics to the WWE.

So now its time to talk of the King of Vampires! Tension Fortissimo!

Real Name: Wataru Kurenai, prince heir and eventually, King of the Fangire Race and a representative of the Heisei Riders. (Circa The Rider War, 2009)

Wataru Kurenai was born in 1986, his father Otoya was a famed violinist/violin maker and his mother was part of a race of monsters called Fangire. Fangires are one of the 13 Demon Races whom like the legends of Vampires they seemingly inspired, feed on the lifeforce of humans.

Since they pose a threat to humans, an organization called The Wonderful Blue Sky had created tech and devices to kill them, with Wataru’s father self-volunteering to aid them. But Otoya fell in love with the Queen of their race Maya and she in turn fell in love with him. Such love was forbidden by the hierarchy of the Fangires and thus she was stripped of her monster powers and title, being cast into exile. Otoya died fighting the Fangire’s King and a few years later afterward, Maya realized being near her son would put him in danger and left him alone with her servant Kivat-bat the Third.

Jump ahead to the year 2008 and Wataru is now a young man who shares his father’s love of music and works as a violin maker/repairman, though he does not get much business. He is an introvert shut-in whose eccentricities, silence around people and bizarre violin varnish experiments scare his neighbors who all call him “Ghost Boy”.

But when one of his father’s violins called the Bloody Rose sounds an alarm to “Fight” a Fangire that is attacking, he becomes a vampire superhero known as Kiva with the help of Kivat and a trio of Monsters who reside in a castle built around a dragon to save the day!

As Wataru learns to trust people more, he grows as a person to the point when we see him again in Decade, he is no longer a shy scared young man and is now an outgoing, confident and serious hero. But even then, he still keeps his gentle and caring personality as he will go out of his way to protect humans.

The story of the series flips back and forth between 1986 (coincidentally, the year before Black would become active) and 2008 to reveal mysteries or thread the plots together.

Powers and Abilities :

Super Vision, Super Fangire Strength, Super jumping power, the ability to create the darkness of night even when it is daytime. Marksmanship, Water manipulation/rain generation and the ability to skate on water in Basshaa form. Enhanced durability and electricity manipulation in Dogga form. Greater super strength in Dogga form and Emperor Form. Feral Senses and sonic blasts in Garulu form. Swordsmanship skill with the Zanvat Sword and Garulu Saber. Possible Telekinesis.

Able to transform into a giant vampire bat dragon. Let me repeat that...A Vampire..Bat.. Dragon. Said vampire bat dragon form has razor sharp claws and the ability to shoot fireballs. His skills as a combatant were weak and clumsy at first but grew drastically over time to the point where he can take on a group of really powerful monsters with little effort and wield the Zanvat Sword even in Kiva form.

His Rider Kick in Emperor form is one of the strongest, as it exerts over 150 tons of force! Also in term of Rider Kicking milestones...he once kicked the Moon!

It’s a beautiful full Kiva out tonight....

In Decade, he could walk upside down on surfaces such as another building that was upside down in the sky. He also demonstrated the ability to control Dimension Walls, or at the very least summon them when needed (that part was never explained). He also can project illusion images such as a view of the multiverse. He also combined his power with the power of his fellow Riders to try to freeze the Earth in place to prevent its destruction until Decade could save reality from total annihilation.

Weaknesses:

Wataru at first has social anxiety and low self-esteem, but this is now gone thanks to support from his friends and family. His greatest weakness is his heritage, as his Fangire half-blood can be “awakened” by an outside force to negate his human instincts and mentality. This makes the Fangire bloodlust inside of him go crazy and he attacks friends and foes alike due to a primal desire to feed. Fortunately, this only happened once and he seems to be in control of himself now as he wants to live as a human.

His other weakness is the DoGaBaKi form, as its fused power is so overwhelming it could kill Wataru if it is not disengaged after 5 minutes. Another weakness is that Wataru can be possessed by an Imagin, as seen in the Den-O and Kiva Movie, or by ghosts.

Yet another is Kivat being his power source, as having a belt powered by a living being is a possible detriment. Kivat once got sick with a cold and Kiva in his base form could not fight at full power due to the bat’s constant sneezing. Kivat could also possibly be captured to prevent Wataru from transforming. Kivat also mentions that if Kiva is defeated, Castle Doran will lose all its power.

Kiva also seems to be unable to swim in his base form due to how heavy his armor is. During his battle with Ixa, he fell into the river and didn’t come up for air, nearly drowning. But that could also just be the Toshiki Inoue trope of Kamen Riders constantly falling in water.

Signature Finishers:

Darkness Moon Break: Kiva’s primary Rider Kick. Kiva uses the Wake Up Fuestle which causes the sky to darken and the moon to come out. Kivat flies to unlock the chains on his left boot which reveal a red bat wing-like appendage. Kiva then leaps into the air and crashes into the target. The kick has an impact of 30,000 kg. (roughly 66,138 pounds of force), enough to leave a crater in the shape of Kiva's bat insignia on any surface upon contact. The DoGaBaKi version is stronger as it fuses the power of the 4 forms into one.

Bloody Punch: Standard Rider Punch with a glowing red aura, only seen in Ganbaride and the Battride War series.

Garulu Howling Slash: Rider Slash attack in Garulu Form. The Garulu Saber is bitten by Kivat and then Kiva opens the “mouth” of his mask to put the blade in. He then leaps into the air and falls sideways to do a vertical sword slash.

Basshaa Aqua Tornado: Rider Shooting Finisher for Basshaa Form. Kivat bites the Basshaa Magnum and then a tide pool of water is generated from the water in the air. Kiva raises his weapon skyward and focuses this water into a whirling tornado that the gun absorbs into a pressurized ball of energized water. Kiva fires it and it acts as a seeker missile chasing down the target until it hits. The target freezes and Kiva “pops” it with a touch of his finger.

Dogga Thunder Slap: Rider Thrust finisher. Kivat bites the Dogga Hammer and Kiva generates a storm of lightning and a dark sky. He opens up the ball “hand” part of the Hammer and it generates a wave that paralyzes the target or reveals a cloaked enemy. The Hammer then generates a giant energy construct of itself in the form of a fist that smashes the target. First use of a war hammer weapon in the franchise.

Emperor Moon Break: Emperor Form’s Rider Kick. After the Imperial Slot selects Wake Up Fever, Kiva jumps and energy “fangs” protrude from his feet to strike the target.

Comes in several variants:

A flying double footed kick where the energy fangs rapidly strike the target’s body until they are flung backwards by a bicycle kick and explode.

A spinning drill kick that uses the fangs as a drill and then slams the target into the ground. This also has a variation seen in the Battride War video games where Kiva flies at a swarm of enemies like a bullet, spinning constantly like a drill to mow them all down.

A flying roundhouse kick where one of the energy fangs slices the body of the target upon impact.

Emperor Howling Slash: Emperor form’s Garulu Rider Slash. After the Imperial Slot selects Garulu Fever, Kiva attaches Tatsulot to the pommel of the Garulu Saber and the tiny dragon uses his fire breath to lift Kiva into the air like a rocket. Kiva then dives using the rocket speed to deliver a powerful downward slash. A variation is that Tatsulot breathes fire to create a flaming blade and the blade of the Garulu Saber ignites, turning the sword into a double edged flame saber. Kiva then channels his inner Sith and hacks the target up... Jedi style.

Emperor Aqua Tornado: Never used in the TV show but it was finally seen in the Kamen Rider Battride War games (starting with the second one). After the Imperial Slot selects Basshaa Fever, Kiva attaches Tatsulot to the muzzle on the Basshaa Magnum. Kiva leaps into the air, then hovers on a tornado of water (which knocks surrounding enemies away), firing a rapid barrage of pressurized balls of water at the target.

Emperor Thunder Slap: The Imperial Slot selects Dogga Fever and Kiiva attaches Tatsulot to the end of the Dogga Hammer’s handle. Tatsulot generates a purple orb of electricity that Kiva hits with the hammer, which paralyzes the target. Kiva then walks up or runs to the target and then when he arrives... Ah HAHAHA!...he smashes it with the HAMMA!

Final Zanvat Slash: Using the Zanvat Fuestle, Kiva slides the Zanvat-bat up and down the Zanvat Sword��blade to energize it with a blood red aura. Kiva then repeatedly slashes the target and slides the Zanvat-bat down. Once it hits the crossguard of the blade, the target falls and explodes. This attack is so powerful in some cases it can rip apart kaiju-sized monsters!

DoGaBaKi Emperor Break: A stronger version of the Emperor Moon Break that utilizes the combined power of the Arms Monsters and Emperor form into DoGaBaki Emperor Form. Hyper Battle only.

The Fangires

Fangires are a race of stained glass-themed monsters that are capable of disguising themselves as humans. They are based on the myths of vampires and like their bloodsucking counterparts, they see humans as food.

However, there are several things that make them differ a bit from normal Vampires. First and foremost is they can go out in the daytime and have no aversion to holy images or holy water (one of their ranks even dresses like a priest and resides in an abandoned church). Another is that they can eat things other than human life essence such as regular food, but it is hard for them to wean off such a succulent Soylent diet for long due to their feral predatory instincts (though some have managed to accomplish it). They also are not limited to being bats (though their leader is one), as Fangires come in all sorts of animal species. (There is even a vampire sheep!). Lastly, when they consume a human’s life essence, the victims do not become one of them but rather just die by turning into a clear glass and shattering into pieces.

Despite this, some Fangires are good and don’t want to harm anyone like Wataru who is half Fangire or some of the ones Otoya faced, who convinced a few of them to live peaceful lives, including his would-have-been-wife Maya.

Fangires possess a wide array of powers: from altering the sky to become dark as night to super speed.

The Checkmate Four:

The Checkmate Four are the powerful elite of the Fangire race, with the King and Queen ruling absolute over their subjects. One of their laws is that a Fangire cannot fall in love with a human and the punishment of this crime is death to the Fangire who commits this sin or the person they are in love with.

Rook, the Lion Fangire, is the enforcer and brute muscle of the group.

Bishop is the enforcer of law for the Fangire race, he is also one of the absolute creepiest villains in all of the franchise...

The Queen is a bit more sympathetic, coming off more as a neutral/protagonist later on, but she does execute Fangires who were “breaking the law” and was a bit cruel at first as she toys with her foes and others before eliminating them. A new Queen is discovered and appointed long after the old one is exiled in 2008.

The King is the metaphorical Dracula of the Fangire race, a Bat Fangire of immense power that went on a rampage with his brethren to slaughter the other members of the 13 Demon Races for sport. He sees humans as beneath him and is also a sexist jerk who coldly views his mate as nothing but property/a breeding machine and abused her if she defied him. Its unsurprising why she left him for Otoya, as though he was a womanizer, he at least tried to respect women as people in some capacity.

A second King, the son of the first and Maya (thereby Wataru’s half brother) at first follows in his father’s cruelty, but eventually repents and redeems himself and becomes kinder man. He then tries to lead his people alongside his brother so that his race can find an alternative means of consuming energy that will not harm humans.

The Intercept X Attack system or IXA was a Rider System developed by the Wonderful Blue Sky Organization in the 1980s to kill Fangires. The System was not perfect and had many technical flaws during its early days that endangered its users due to the limitations of tech in that time period. The project kept going despite this and by the 2000s was fully usable without any glitches.

Keisuke Nago became its user and went on a hunt to try and kill Kiva, as he had heard of all the terrible things the previous one did prior in the 80s. After a few brawls and getting his ego bruised and saved by Kiva on occasion, he eventually warms up to Wataru and then the two eventually become BFFs.

753 is a bit overzealous on being a hero of justice, but he does mellow out a bit and means well,

Yes, There Is a Condiment King: A Field Guide to the Oddball Characters of 'The Lego Batman Movie'

When you’ve been caped-crusading in a burg as crime-ridden as Gotham for 75-plus years, you’re bound to face off with dozens of dastardly evildoers, and they all can’t be iconic. For every Joker, Catwoman, and Penguin, there’s a Kite Man, Egghead, and King Tut.

Part parody, part paean, The Lego Batman Movie lovingly plumbs the depths of the Dark Knight’s rogues gallery to reward long-time Bat lovers — and perhaps confound casual fans. In the opening scene of the movie (watch it above), the Joker hijacks a plane over Gotham and spills the details of his latest nefarious scheme to take down his archenemy. The Clown Prince of Crime has recruited a who’s-who of fellow felons, among them such major big-screen miscreants as Riddler, Catwoman, Penguin, Bane, Two-Face, Scarecrow, Mr. Freeze, and Poison Ivy, as well as Suicide Squaddies like Harley Quinn, Killer Croc, and Captain Boomerang. The Joker has also enlisted a bunch of who’s-thats, a deep-nerd roster of long-forgotten and obscure foes from every era; among them: Calendar Man, Polka-Dot Man, The Eraser, Crazy Quilt, and the inimitable Condiment King.

“OK, are you making some of those up?” asks the befuddled pilot.

“Nope, they’re all real,” retorts the Joker. “Probably worth a Google.”

We’ll save you the trip to a search engine. The filmmakers, led by director Chris McKay (an admitted comic-book nut who sports a Catwoman tattoo), know their Bat-lore. Here’s a quick rundown of all the B- (and, in some cases, Z-) listers who cameo in the movie.

The Calculator: A disco-era Bat-foe, the Calculator arrived on the Gotham scene in 1976. WIth a costume inspired by then-popular pocket calculators, this guy was able to project light from his helmet and form it into weapons, à la Green Lantern.

Calendar Man: This villain likes to plot his crimes timed to certain special dates and holidays. Created in 1958, he is best known to contemporary audiences for his key role in the classic mid-1990s storyline Batman: The Long Halloween.

Catman: Originating in 1963, Catman was a lot like Batman in terms of skills, except using a feline motif. His costume is very similar to old-school Wolverine, down to the razor-sharp claws.

Clayface: A character who has existed in various forms since 1940. In his current incarnation (which inspires the movie character), Clayface has lost his human form and now exists as a giant amorphous creature who can mold his clay-like body into different shapes. Like Man-Bat, he is one of the better-known villains on this list, though not quite in the same realm as the Jokers, Penguins, or Harley Quinns.

Clock King: Originally an enemy of Green Arrow, Clock King arrived in the DC Universe in 1960 and is best known for his giant clock mask. His powers include the ability to see a few seconds into the future.

Condiment King: Created for Batman: The Animated Series in 1994, this pun-happy baddie was originally known as Mitchell Mayo and brandished guns that shot different condiments.

Crazy Quilt: Debuting in 1946 as an adversary to a team known as the Boy Commandos, Crazy Quilt eventually graduated to foe of Batman and Robin, using his Technicolor dreamcoat and hypnotizing helmet to commit crimes.

Egghead: Vincent Price originated this character for the 1966 Adam West-powered Batman TV series. Egghead took his name from his bald, oval-shaped head and his extreme intelligence; his trademark weapons were all egg-themed.

The Eraser: A former classmate of Bruce Wayne’s, this minor-league malefactor from 1966 created a pencil-like persona and hired himself out as someone who could erase all evidence from a crime scene thanks to his special helmet.

Gentleman Ghost: Also known as Gentleman Jim Craddock, he got his start battling Hawkman in 1947 before moving into the ranks of Batman rogues.

Kabuki Twins: These mysterious female twin martial artists, with acrobatic abilities and deadly claws, served as henchwomen for the Penguin in the 2004 animated series The Batman.

Killer Moth: Introduced in 1951, Killer Moth styled himself as the underworld’s answer to Batman, complete with Mothmobile, Moth-Signal, and Mothcave. Later versions of the character included wings in place of a cape — and at one point he was transformed by a demon into a giant insectoid creature befitting his name.

King Tut: A relic from the 1966 Batman series, Tut was a former Egyptologist who gets bonked on the head and believes himself to be the ancient pharaoh. He perpetrates crimes using creations based on ancient Egyptian lore.

Kite-Man: Debuting in 1960, this guy’s gimmick was to use kite-themed weapons to commit crimes. He was one of several lesser lights on this list to be revived for comic purposes in the 2008 cartoon series Batman: The Brave and the Bold.

Magpie: A character who first appeared in a 1986 issue of Man of Steel, in which Superman visits Bats in Gotham City, and the two heroes encounter this bewigged female foe, a museum curator who will do anything for shiny objects.

Man-Bat: One of the more recent additions to the rogues gallery, introduced in a 1970 comic book, Man-Bat is a former scientist who tests his bat-infused serum on himself only to transform into a monstrous creature. He was the first villain Batman faced in the classic Batman: The Animated Series.

March Harriet: Also known as March Hare, she surfaced in a 2008 story as part of the Wonderland Gang, which also included Mad Hatter, Tweedledum, and Tweedledee.

The Mime: Skilled in martial arts and miming, this 1987 emo villain lost her parents in a fireworks factory explosion and went bad.

The Mutant Leader: The guy with the torch on the far left of the movie poster above, Mutant Leader hails from Frank Miller’s 1986 genre-shaking classic Batman: The Dark Knight Returns; he runs the Mutant Gang and nearly kills Batman in battle.

Orca: This finned female antagonist debuted in 2000; she was a marine biologist who, after being paralyzed in an accident, attempts to heal herself using enhanced killer-whale DNA, only to turn into a Shamu-esque monster.

Polka-Dot Man: Or, as he likes to be called, “Mr. Polka-Dot Man,” is a 1962-launched weirdo who sports a costume covered in removable, weaponized dots to commit colorful crime. Like Kite-Man, Crazy Quilt, Clock King, and Hugo Strange, Polka-Dot Man was another forgettable villain resuscitated for The Brave and the Bold cartoon.

Red Hood: Created in 1951, Red Hood was initially the guise of Joker before he fell into a vat of chemicals while being chased by Batman and was transformed into the Clown Prince of Crime. The character was rebooted for the revered 1985 story line Batman: Under the Hood, as the deadly vigilante alter ego of Jason Todd, the ex-Robin long presumed dead.

Doctor Phosphorous: That glowing green skeletal figure in the back row of the movie poster is Doctor Phosphorous, a radioactive rogue who first battled Batman in 1977.

Professor Hugo Strange: This bearded evil scientist, who you can spot on the left side of the poster next to Mutant Leader, has been matching wits with Batman since 1940.

Tarantula: Originally a 1940s Golden Age male crime-fighter, the character was rebooted in 2002 as a female vigilante who uses deadly force — and has a controversial relationship with the grown-up Dick Grayson (a.k.a. Nightwing).

Zebra-Man: Initially, Zebra-Man was a one-off villain from a 1960 issue of Detective Comics with magnetic abilities and a striped costume. A second character with the same name and similar powers entered the DCU in 1987. He is another alum of The Brave and the Bold show.

Zodiac Master: This 1960s villain is best known for his astrological-themed costume and weaponry; his shtick is to predict catastrophes that he secretly contrives.

The Lego Batman Movie also delivers several deep-cut heroes from the DCU, many of whom pop up during an epic dance party at Superman’s Fortress of Solitude.

Aaron Cash: A security guard at Gotham’s Arkham Asylum, this character, introduced in 2003, had his left arm chomped off by Killer Croc and sports a hook prosthesis.

Apache Chief: One of several characters created specifically for the animated Challenge of the Super Friends in the late-1970s (see below) in a misguided attempt to bring diversity to the Justice League, this Native American hero could grow into a giant, talk to animals, and draw upon supernatural tracking skills.

Black Vulcan: Not to be confused with DC’s Black Lightning (who couldn’t be used due to pending litigation — but is finally about to get his own TV show), this African-American hero tapped the power of electricity. He was ultimately replaced by the better-known Cyborg.

El Dorado: Another straight-to-Super Friends hero, this Mexican marvel had an Aztec-inspired costume, could teleport, and peppered his dialogue with Spanish words.

Samurai: A Japanese member of the Super Friends team, Samurai had the ability to manipulate wind and create mini-tornadoes.

Wonder Twins: Debuting on Super Friends in 1977, Zan and Jayna were shape-shifting teen siblings from the planet Exxor who could transform themselves (Zan into forms of water; Jayna into any animal) by touching hands. Their pet space monkey, Gleek, is also in the movie.

Wonder Dog: The canine sidekick for the Super Friends’ original adolescent pair, the un-superpowered Wendy and Marvin, Wonder Dog serves as the DJ for Superman’s bash.
