Clippers & Lou Williams Working On Contract Extension | Lou Williams
Kevin Durant became the 44th NBA player to score 20,000 points in a career, but his team fell to Lou Williams and the Los Angeles Clippers. Lou Williams scored a career-high 50 points as the Los Angeles Clippers spoiled a milestone night for Kevin Durant with a 125-106 NBA victory. Williams, who has been coming off the bench all season, got the start last night. It was a busy 11-game night in the NBA, so you know the drill.
The Amazing Lou Williams was simply amazing Wednesday night, shooting down the defending NBA champion Golden State Warriors, burying them with an avalanche of points that was simply amazing to watch. He shot 16-for-27 from the field, 8-for-16 from three-point range, and 10-for-10 from the free throw line. Williams shot 16 of 27 from the floor and made 8 of 16 3-point attempts while notching his third 40-point outing of the season. But he's probably not laughing after a joke he made on Wednesday night. He went 16-27 from the field, and knocked down eight of his 16 attempts from three.
Curry has the flash, the instant fear, and the rage that incites and excites thousands with a single flick. Maybe Steve Kerr should cool it with tongue-in-cheek predictions about how well opponents will fare against his Golden State Warriors.Lou Williams is having a career year for the Los Angeles Clippers, who have climbed back into the playoff picture. Lou Williams occupies a unique spot in today's game. After falling to the Lakers on Tuesday at Staples Center, the Kings return home to face the other team from Los Angeles on Thursday evening. Los Angeles: Lou Williams scored a career-high 50 points as the Los Angeles Clippers spoiled a milestone night for Kevin Durant with a 125-106 victory on Wednesday. Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr likes to joke just about as much as anyone. Lou Williams had 50 points against the Warriors on Wednesday night.

Sharapova's presence draws savage backlash | Maria Sharapova
Maria Sharapova makes triumphant return, stuns Simona Halep. Maria Sharapova begins to explore just how well she can finish at the US Open on Wednesday, August 30 after a successful and emotional Grand Slam comeback following a 15-month doping ban. Former champion Maria Sharapova was invited to parade the women's trophy for the Australian Open draw ceremony, and in a cringeworthy interview the host TV broadcaster tiptoed around what was referred to as her 'time out'. Paxman it was not. Maria Sharapova's reaction to a first-round victory at the US Open was to fall to her knees in celebration and shed tears as she looked up towards her coaching team in the stands.
When the struggle was finished, when the job was complete, when the crowd had stopped cheering, Maria Sharapova found it difficult to idle her engine, to quiet her nerves, to rein in her emotions. Melbourne: The Australian Open defended its decision to ask Maria Sharapova to carry the Daphne Akhurst Memorial Cup into the draw ceremony, arguing that she was the only former champion who had been available for the showpiece event. Australian Open organisers have defended the decision to have Maria Sharapova walk the trophy on to the court for the tournament draw. With her epic upset of No. 2 Simona Halep in the history books, Maria Sharapova won't have to face a Top 10 player until the semifinals if she keeps the shriek going. To tennis fans , it was a distracting chafing hazard.
Garbine Muguruza, Venus Williams and Maria Sharapova are all taking to court, with Nick Kyrgios, Marin Cilic, Alexander Zverev and Grigor Dimitrov also involved. When the draw came out, the tennis salon collectively circled the women's match pitting wild card Maria Sharapova against second-seeded Simona Halep. It's been a difficult period in Maria Sharapova's career but the five-time Grand Slam champion believes she has a different perspective on her approach to tennis after her lengthy spell away from the sport. Serena Williams will not defend the title after giving birth to her first child last September but 2008 winner Maria Sharapova, who failed a drugs test at the tournament in 2016, is back unseeded after a ban and will face Tatjana Maria of Germany. The US Open is the last big event of the year in international tennis.

Australian Open 2018: Who were the winners and losers after the draw? | Australian Open draw
Golden opportunity for the Australian, question won't be on his form or ability but solely on how he copes with the expectation. Men's third seed Grigor Dimitrov will face a qualifier, with Alexander Zverev, ranked fourth, playing Italian Thomas Fabbiano but with 2014 champion Stan Wawrinka, returning after surgery, in his section of the draw. They may have hobbled their way to Melbourne, but in the end most of the top men's players, including Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, and Stan Wawrinka, made it into the Australian Open draw. When both departed before the quarter-finals, it cleared the way for Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal to reach the final.
Roger Federer will open his Australian Open title defence against Slovenian Aljaz Bedene next week, while top seed Rafa Nadal, the losing finalist last year, was paired with Dominican Victor Estrella Burgos at the draw yesterday. When Milos Raonic and Denis Shapovalov saw the official draw for the 2018 Australian Open on Thursday, likely neither Canadian was thrilled. Federer admits he can still barely believe what he pulled off.World No. 1 Simona Halep will begin her Australian Open campaign against local teen wild card Destanee Aiava. Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic arrived here one year ago as the top two seeds at the Australian Open.
With Serena Williams out, the draw is, as they say, wide open. SHARE; Share on Facebook SHARE; Share on Twitter TWEET; Link.An uncomfortable air hung over yesterday's Australian Open draw as Maria Sharapova, in the absence of defending champion Serena Williams, carried the Daphne Akhurst Memorial Cup into the draw ceremony on Margaret Court Arena. MELBOURNE: Roger Federer will open his Australian Open title defence against Slovenian Aljaz Bedene next week, while top seed Rafa Nadal, the losing finalist last year, was paired with Dominican Victor Estrella Burgos at the draw yesterday. I recently said that Kyrgios, who just won a tune-up title in Brisbane, would win his first major at Wimbledon. Golden opportunity for the Australian, question won't be on his form or ability but solely on how he copes with the expectation. Likening women's tennis to the Wild West would oversell the vastness and chaos of the American frontier. He might be one of the smallest men in the draw but Australian teen sensation Alex de Minaur has promised to go big at next week's grand slam in Melbourne.

Stonis: Cameron White is 'one of the smartest players in international cricket' | Cameron White
Australia dominated the Ashes, but a whole new challenge awaits with this five-match ODI series between Australia and England. Australian cricket captain Steve Smith has let questions about Glenn Maxwell's non-selection go through to the keeper, saying that the selectors simply picked on form. Australia dumped a bunch of my favourite players and brought back some of my least favourite - who, to make things worse, played really well, making my predictions of their eventual failure look bad. It's a key series for the hosts in preparation for the 2019 Cricket World Cup, to be held in England.
Meanwhile, the 34-year-old White said he was surprised to be back in the squad after several years despite strong performances domestically. "I was very surprised this morning when Trevor Hohns rang me. Maxwell has been in the middle of selection drama ever since his omission from the Ashes Test squad earlier this summer. Meanwhile, Glenn Maxwell was given another stern message from the Australian hierarchy after being snubbed for the second time in just over a week as selectors reiterated their stance on the out-of-favour all-rounder.Cameron White was shockingly named as the replacement for Chris Lynn who injured his calf. Cameron White has replaced injured Chris Lynn in Australia's squad for this month's one-day international series against England, Cricket Australia said Thursday.
The Australian National Selection Panel has chosen Victoria and Melbourne Renegades batsman Cameron White as Chris Lynn's replacement for the ODI Series against England. Gary Oldman gets inside the real Churchill for Darkest Hour | Darkest Hour
In the lead, there is probably no praise high enough for Gary Oldman. He's currently riding high on the success of his portrayal of former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill in new World War II movie, The Darkest Hour. Winston Churchill is one of the most charismatic figures in British history, as greatly admired for his passionate, patriotic speeches as he's renowned for his "V for Victory" salute and cigar-toting, chain-smoking penchant. If the period portrayed in the film Darkest Hour is the founding myth of the modern British state, it also provides a kind of mythic justification for the BBC - for pretty much everything.
IT'S hard enough to accurately portray the momentous events Winston Churchill led us through during the Second World War. While "Darkest Hour" and "Beauty and the Beast" are worlds apart in visual design and fashion, there's no mistaking the meticulous period craftsmanship of the team of production designer Sarah Greenwood and costume designer Jacqueline Durran. It's routine, if the conversation down your local ever turns to who might be the greatest actor of all time, to offer up DeNiro or Brando or Pacino.Curiously, "Darkest Hour" and "Dunkirk" basically cover the same ground, namely, Winston Churchill's first month as Prime Minister of Great Britain. During the period depicted in Darkest Hour, Churchill was yet to become the indefatigable elder statesman now fixed in so many people's memories.
When we first see Winston Churchill in the wartime drama Darkest Hour he's lit like the Devil in flaming red. Gary Oldman has revealed that he proposed to his new wife while in full costume as Winston Churchill.Gary Oldman solidified his lead in the Oscar race for Best Actor with his win at the Golden Globes on Sunday. But to turn an actor who looks nothing like him into a Churchill good enough to fool a historian, well, that is quite a feat. Sound helped create the real world of Darkest Hour, the story of Winston Churchill's historic decision to go to war with Germany. "Just like you have your props, your sets, your costumes and everything, we're doing the same thing with sound. The Firm , State of Grace, Dracula, True Romance, The Contender The 27 tumultuous days, which led to Churchill's impassioned cry for the British to fight on the beaches and in the streets, is elegantly dramatised in Joe Wright's handsomely crafted character study, Darkest Hour. A version of this article appeared in the print edition of The Daily Star on January 12, 2018, on page 16.

Isn't Don, is good: Is Steve Smith really Australia's second | Usman Khawaja
Usman Khawaja scored a gritty half century as Sydney Thunder defeated Perth Scorchers in their Big Bash League encounter on Thursday. cricket Updated: Jan 11, 2018 23:49 IST. Omnisport. Sydney Thunder got a minor facelift when they bagged only their third win in the ongoing Big Bash League, on Thursday , against the joint table-toppers Perth Scorchers. There will be plenty of fans questioning why Khawaja was available for the Thunder in the first place _ and not preparing for the first one-dayer against England in Melbourne on Sunday. Their unbeaten partnership of 130 was a record fifth-wicket stand for the franchise.
Australia duty giveth, Australia duty taketh away. The Thunder were great, and then they were horrible. Usman Khawaja is just oozing confidence right now.Veterans Callum Ferguson and Shane Watson helped to swell the Thunder's total, although the home side managed just two fours off the last 4.5 overs after Khawaja's dismissal. A succession of scores including Usman Khawaja's 171, Steve Smith's 83, Shaun Marsh's 98no and younger brother Mitchell's 63no ensured the home side will build a significant first innings lead.
Resuming on 91, Khawaja brought up his first Ashes century with a cut shot as the left-hander and Smith again looked comfortable. Australian selectors must be wishing they waited a few more hours before deciding on a replacement for Chris Lynn in the ODI series, because Usman Khawaja's summer is just beginning to heat up.The 31-year-old left-handed Queensland batsman, who has played 29 Tests, 18 ODIs and nine T20 internationals, is enjoying a very productive season. Electing to bat first, the Thunder got off to a brisk start as Khawaja and Kurtis Patterson amassed a 45-run partnership before Patterson was caught behind off the bowling of Matthew Kelly for 14. Mike Hussey and Jacques Kallis played, Andre Russell in his pomp and Usman Khawaja was so good David Warner got demoted from the Australia opening position.
