superhero romance is actually so fun because what does “I would die for you” mean from a guy who would die for anyone?
#‘I would die for you’ they would die for a stranger they met on the street. But if it came down to you or saving the world#What would the choice be?#Dc#Shitpost#kittykatninja321 heritage post

I will say, it is so fun thinking about the Waynes and their relationship with food. But specifically Bruce.
We get such little light shed on the Waynes before the Big Terrible happened. Like. How were Wayne dinners like?
Were they terribly posh and quiet with small moments of fun thrown in? Was Alfred scolding Thomas for telling a star eyed Bruce unnecessarily gory details from a surgery?
Did Martha help Bruce break into the cookie jar? Was there a lovely, playful gossip about Bruce's loud classmates and his adorable crush on Gray Ghost?
Because I like that! But I'd also like it to be a complete juxtaposition.
I want Bruce to talk about his family, to his children, with a smile that could melt the sun. I want him to tell them about the noise.
How the Wayne manor was permanently flooded with a noise and boister that could rival a packed 5 star kitchen.
How Thomas always cooked with a dry cigarette in his mouth, arguing with uncle Jacob about forks of all things.
Why were they smudged, why were they placed randomly and not organised with militaristic precision, while Martha watched with the fondest annoyance.
How Thomas would cuss filthy in Italian only when Bruce was around and only Oz could understand him, long before he was the Penguin, long before Bruce was Batman.
"It's about culture. Not that you'd understand, Jakey."
And uncle Jacob never entertained his father for long. He'd throw a dirty look, his obsidian eyes sharp as a switchblade, and mutter a 'bitch' in Russian, while Alfred sat there judging them both.
The Waynes were chaos with heartbeats. And Bruce's favorite event at these diners? The food fights. It's always uncle Philip who started them.
"Wow, Jay eating steak. Never thought I'd see this day."
" It's venison."
" Vinison?" Thomas would finally take a break from his unlit cigarette, holding Bruce in his lap like a king would a prized cat.
A collective sigh rang among the table. They knew what was coming. " What are you, fuckin' crazy? That's fuckin' cannoli, dipshit."
"With vinison."
"Jacob."
" Tom."
"Martha."
" Honey."
" You come into my house, not knowing what a goddam cannoli is? Fuck are you gonna tell me next, you don't put garlic in your Carbonara? I mean."
" Garlic is disgusting."
And Thomas would cover Bruce's ears like that's the most offensive thing uncle Jacob could utter at Thomas Wayne's table. And Uncle Oz agreed. Their favorite pastime was ganging up on Martha's oldest brother.
And it starts off as something minuscule and petty and mutates in something loud and ugly and breathtaking.
Bruce would watch with an open mouth in Alfred's lap, as his father's neck popped with veins, and uncle Jacobs pale complexion would blush something angry as the skin of his throat thinned from yelling.
"FUCK YOU, FUCK YOU, YOUR PRESIDENT IS A VODKA DRINKING, BALDING, COMMIE PIECE OF SHIT."
"YOU'RE AMERICAN. "
" I CANT HELP THAT, I WAS BORN LIKE THAT!"
And it wasn't a true Saturday dinner unless Thomas didn't leap across the table, running over all the food to smash whatever dish into Jacobs face.
But truly, the best part, was watching them go from fight dogs to eating outside in time-out. As different as his father and uncle were, they could always find agreement on one topic:
Defying Martha Wayne was painfully stupid.
They'd share a cigarette and eat in silence, which was as friendly as they'd ever get. But he loved it. Bruce loved Saturday dinner.
And when the batkids start the fighting tradition on Saturdays, Bruce thinks they do, too.

Dick and Damian bond over being different to their family.
Jason and Stephanie and Duke were born into the deepest, darkest corners of Gotham, while Tim and Bruce were thrust into galas and secrets and old-but-new money.
But they're all Gothamites at their core. They look up into the gloomy sky and feel at peace, they look down and feel calm, they walk around with the ache of Gotham in their blood, recognized or not.
Damian is half Pakistani. (Nanda Parbat (where the League of Assassins is set) is based on Nanga Parbat, the westernmost major peak of the Himalayas. While Gotham City is traditionally depicted as being located in the U.S. state of New Jersey. (Its look and atmosphere was mainly influenced by New York City, and Bill Finger said that he chose the name "Gotham", and not New York, so that all readers in any city could identify with it.) )
Dick is Romani. (In most cases, he's depicted as either a quarter or half Romani, but no matter how little, he IS Romani. I'm not entirely sure which subgroup he is (i'm not sure if subgroup is the right word, sorry), but according to Wikipedia its a Indo-Aryan ethnic group which most likely originated in India, but then they migrated into Europe so there's so many possible different places he could be from. I'm not entirely sure how this all actually works, so I don't know if theorizing which specific country/subgroup matters or not.)
Please note that I'm not talking skin colour in this post. Damian (in most cases) is depicted with tan/light brown skin, but Dick is almost always as white as the others. The only person (of my knowledge) in the batfam who is always shown as coloured is Duke. But he's not in this post because he is very much a Gothamite, regardless of his skin colour.
This is because skin colour does not entirely depend on the country you're from. I am white, and my friend is brown, but we are both fully Portuguese because all four of our parents are from Portugal.
I was raised in England, and I feel a strangeness whenever I am with my British friends because despite having the same skin colour, living in the same country, speaking the same language, i am different. But my friends difference is both inward and outward, if that makes sense.
I made this post because as someone who has recently realized this difference i feel, i want these fictional characters to feel it too.
So, sorry for the ramble, but I just want more fanfics where these characters take their difference (I don't know if race or ethnicity is the right word, but by difference I mean the fact that they are not fully Americans) and embrace it, whether they do it together or separately.
Thanks for coming to my ted talk.

Someone reblogged my Jewish Burial Rights in Batman post with a headcanon that the Waynes are Messianic Jews, and I just stared at my wall experiencing the entire spectrum of human emotion (bad)

Action Comics (1938) #763 and Adventures of Superman (1987) #595 and Superman: The Man of Steel (1991) #117 and Action Comics (1938) #782
#I really hope Lena’s personality in Superman (2023) isn’t just generic angsty teenager#and I specifically hope this mentality of ‘humans are just meat’#and that Lena was brought up to try to ‘overcome the fallibility’ of her ‘human heritage’#but ultimately valued ‘the heart’ and recognized herself as meat and not as a ‘soulless machine’#is in some way relevant to the writing#even if these aren’t the exact same events that played out in the current continuity#particularly that she was relating herself to Superman at the end there is significant to me#dc#lena luthor II#lex luthor#brainiac 13#my posts#comic panels

"Let me tell you a story about hope: it always starts and ends with birds," ¹ is in many ways an applied thesis statement on the story of the Batman mythos. in this essay I will
¹ Victoria Chang, from “Love Letters,” in The Trees Witness Everything
#also batman could perhaps be called a fable of our time in the sense that one of the definitions of a fable is ''a story#about legendary persons or exploits'' (american heritage dictionary)#batman as a character and as a story is a cultural fable of our times. everyone has some shape of it even if they're not familiar.#Lu rambles#batfam#batman#dc#listen idk if i actually have an essay in me but if i post this and think on it enough with the girlies? mayhaps i will then

there are characters for whom “poor little meow meow” doesn’t quite cut it. To me he’s like a traumatized pit bull mix with a bite history and I’m the white girl with a savior complex trying to stop them from putting him down

All-Star Comics (1940) #8
at first I didn’t like that, despite the talk about the role Wonder Woman being to “fight for liberty and freedom and all womankind” because “America, the last citadel of democracy, and of equal rights for women, needs our help,” it comes across that Diana is primarily motivated by Steve because she never talks about those things herself in this story and instead it’s said that she “leaves Paradise Island to take the man she loves back to America.”
but now I really like it because I’ve realized that, since Steve doesn’t wake up until after they leave Paradise Island, it’s a unique reversal of classic fairy tale behavior, like in Snow White, where the prince falls in love with the princess and becomes wholly commited to her entirely while she’s unconscious:
excerpt from “Little Snow White” in The Complete First Edition: The Original Folk & Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm, translated and edited by Jack Zipes
though, to be fair to Diana, she does get to know Steve a little bit through her mother using the Magic Sphere to see how it is he came to Paradise Island, and through that she sees his commendable actions and values on the mission that went awry.
#also the fact that Diana can never come back to Paradise Island#that she is ‘giving up her heritage and her right to eternal life’ in order to ‘take the man she loves back to America’#a place ‘she learns to love and protect and adopts as her own’#invokes marriage to me#also I could say that the magic sphere is like the magic mirror in Snow White#dc#diana prince#steve trevor#fairy tales#snow white#my posts

BATS & THE BIRDS
Batman + Robin!Fan-character
more doodles here
rambles under the cut
Idan's age is only slightly younger Jason in the main storyline, plus the lad is a gothamine, born and raised, so what's stopping bats from taking the kid in?
For the ones who dont know abt Idan, he's a DC oc who's a sorcerer. He doesn't find out he's got magic blood until he fucked around with his friends and accidentally genuinely summoned a demon (his blood is his main source of magic and contains all sorts of fuckey magic properties) of whom revealed to him his magic heritage, given to him by his mom. More details about the lad here.
Baseline of this version of Idan is that
He's the 3rd Robin, coming in soon after Jason's death
Instead of just his mother, both his parents end up dead (robin moment) via the demon he summoned by pure accident
He lives a crash course on how to use magic, survive demons, make deals, tries not going totally insane, survive being homeless in general, etc etc
All of that before he gets found by Bats. Idan, done with life, decides to Fuck Around (offers his wares to batman. Semi implies he knows Bat's identity (he doesn't). Outright says he's like 14-15) and Finds Out when Bats gives chase because there's a magic child on the loose.
Idan is still running around cause he dont want any business in allat until Jason revives. Idan finds out
Cue Idan telling B this, B not totally believing that but decides this would probably be a good way to adopt keep an eye on the kid so he offers Idan a place in Wayne Manor
In exchange, Idan helps find Jason under the guise of being a new Robin
shenanigans ensue
Other notes
Zatanna is an old friend of B. B calls in a favour to her to teach Idan and make sure the kid doesn't spontaneously combust
Also retroactively training Idan not to rely on his magic so much. To use it as a backup plan if all else fails. Does not stop Idan from being showy about it, however
It's fine, the gotham criminals just think this Robin simply equipped himself with a concealed flamethrower and Batman allowed it for some god forsaken reason
Idan's business ventures still continue, as well, only now with the supervision of two dissapproving adults. Alfred tend to be the one to hook up onr of those blood collection bags to Idan (much to his dismay but he'd rather this than Idan do it himself)
I'll make another post with more details about this AU
until then, thanks for reading
+ bonus bats without Idan
