💉 Before Mori Ougai was boss of Port Mafia, a criminal organization with dozens of enterprises under their control.

💉 Now Mori Ougai was a fictional character and Port Mafia only have twelve members, including him and Elise.

💉 Mori was the boss of Port Mafia for almost ten years now.

💉 For almost ten years, Mori did everything to keep balance in Yokohama.

💉 For almost ten years, Mori did everything to ensure that Port Mafia will be the most powerful organization in Yokohama.

💉 And just in one moment almost all his work became almost meaningless.

💉 There weren't any real dangers in real Yokohama.

💉 There were only fictional dangers in fictional Yokohama.

💉 The Great War was a war between a bunch of empty, fictional puppets. During war he was surrounded by empty puppets. He submitted his reports to empty puppets. He forced Yosano to treat empty puppets.

💉 He didn't kill previous Boss. He broke an empty puppet.

💉 Mori was furious. Fifteen years of work lost all its meaning.

💉 He still has Port Mafia.

💉 That's how Chuuya and Hirotsu learn that ADA members are also self-aware. That's how Akutagawa and Higuichi heard that The Guild members are also self-aware. Mori and Elise once saw Fyodor Dostoevsky, who was searching through the books in one of the libraries. Gin and Tachihara brought news about Government and Hunting Dogs.

💉 Yokohama wasn't completely empty. It was good news.

💉 And then, one day, he feels an entity's gaze on him.

The war between the Armed Detective Agency and the Port Mafia had only begun. Both sides wanting to save their leaders from death. Their current solution, to kill the opposing head.

The Port Mafia had numbers, that for sure. Within a matter of a few minutes, they had already surrounded the agency building. Another squad was dedicated to protecting Mori. However, even if the ADA didn't have numbers, they had strength and cunning thought. That was already proven with Tanizaki's illusion ability and their more recent attack at the front.

You were brought in to support the conflict, despite not wanting to. Really, you were just there for the show but a certain ginger just has to drag you along. But once again, you were part of the Port Mafia. You have to step in and help.

So there you were with Chuuya's men, just taking a drag of your cigarette. Shit went south at the agency building and Chuuya arrived back with his squad. The scrunched eyebrows and the focused eyes he had, you know that he's stressed.

"Outsmarted huh?" You ask as you relaxed in your standing position.

"Damn right," Chuuya replied with an annoyed tone. "You better do your part. I don't want you standing on the sidelines."

"Oh I'm doing something. Guarding this part of the building. Don't want a sneak attack ya know?" You take another drag of the cigarette.

Chuuya narrowed his eyes at you but he got a call. Some of the ADA members attacked the front. The high pitch of his voice was just more signs of his stress and saying he'll be right there.

"Go along~ You don't mind me keeping some of your men?" You say as you crossed your arms, keeping the cigarette in your mouth.

Just as Chuuya turned around to say something to his squad but a boy's voice called out.

"I can't let you do that, fancy hat boy."

At the bottom of the stairs stood Edogawa Ranpo. Alone but determined. You knew already not to underestimate anyone from the ADA, no matter how innocent they look. Everyone had eyes on him. Ranpo claimed that he could stop Chuuya. You just stood a few steps higher than Chuuya.

"Are you serious?" Chuuya asked. "I know you're integral to the Detective Agency, but I don't think you can put up a fight."

You muffled a scoff and glanced away. The ginger was already underestimating Ranpo, despite the ADA's strong pushback. But you weren't going to speak up.

Ranpo grinned and revealed his determined green eyes. "But you've lost to Dazai before, haven't you?"

You could hear Chuuya growl and a red aura lit up on him. A strong force hit the ground and caused a cloud that obscured him.

"Want to see what it's like to be crushed by gravity?" The Port Mafia Executive threatened.

You rolled your eyes at his dramatic reaction. Of course he's trying to put on a show. To hide his height and seem like a dangerous big dog. Though that didn't make Ranpo back down. He snickered and smirked at Chuuya.

"Nothing is impossible for the great detective," Ranpo said.

Chuuya shot up into the air with his ability. He came charging down fast like a meteor descending into the earth and making that odd shriek that gradually increased in pitch.

You raise your brow at his stunt. "Motherfucker…" you mutter to yourself. You were more surprised that even that didn't make Ranpo back down.

"Do you like mystery novels?" Ranpo asked aloud.

Ranpo brought out something and when Chuuya's fist made contact, a huge yellow swirl was circling around Chuuya. He was stuck in the air. You didn't even bother to listen Ranpo's words. You were more amused that Chuuya couldn't take his hand back to resist.

Within a matter of seconds, the two disappeared. All that was left behind was a book. Your cigarette dropped from your mouth. The Port Mafia members was paralyzed in shock. A raccoon came and took the book in it's mouth.

You picked up your phone and contacted the PM.

"Um… Hey…" it was hard to find the right words without sounding unbelievable. "Chuus… disappeared like a ghost."

The racoon started to run away. You had to act quick or else you would lose your lead on Chuuya. You turn back to the PM men and shut the phone.

"Stay back and guard this," you commanded. "I'm getting our exec back."

You followed the raccoon back to a building. It ran up to a tall man with brown, fluffy hair. He flinched back when he saw you.

"W-What d-do you want?" He asked as he took the book back and clutched it to his chest.

"Look, all I want is the small, fancy man that your book snatched up," you say as you put your hands up. "I ain't picking a fight. Just a temporary truce until I get my chihuahua back."

The man paused to think. He could see you weren't trying to hide your hand behind your back or reach for anything. He relaxed his posture.

The two of you went to some other secluded location as you waited for the two guys. You figured out that this man was Edgar Allen Poe, or Poe for short. The raccoon was named Karl and spent a good time with him. Even if he was more focused trying to write his mystery novels. In a week, Ranpo was out. The war between the ADA and PM died down. Even some of the ADA came by but Chuuya hasn't came.

You were sitting on a chair in boredom. It has been a month since the incident. Dazai was sticking around the room for some reason.

"Hot damn, I'm gonna think he's not gonna get out at this point," you sigh as you leaned back lazily.

"Well I can always keep you company!" Dazai chirped and came close to you. "Plus, I rather have him stuck there."

You crossed your leg over. "Yeah well, not like I can leave him. The PM will have my ass if I come back empty handed."

"I could have your ass. Or you could quit the Port Mafia," he smirked at you.

"I'd be shot on sight," you scoffed.

"I know someone who could help~"

Just then a yellow light lit the room. A silhouette ascended from the book. The familiar hat outline and his coat fluttering were distinguishable. You both knew it was him.

Chuuya was panting lightly and turned to observe his surroundings.

"Well fun's over," Dazai deflated and put his hands in his coat pockets. "The world was better without him."

"Hah?!" Chuuya perked up with a scowl on his face.

"Let's go home, I'm fucking bored," You took Chuuya's arm and dragged him away.

"Oi! Let go! I'm not a damn child!!"

"You act like one!" Dazai added with a snarky smirk.

Chuuya growled at him and you covered his mouth and dragged him back to base.

The port mafia is the most feared organization in all of Yokohama; it reigns supreme over the underground dealings of the city. Behind the curtains of the city’s stage, it protects the citizens in the dark of the night and works in tandem with the armed detective agency and special divisions for unusual powers. While they rule the night, the special divisions for unusual powers and military police guard the day and the armed detective agency watches over the twilight hours. This scheme was set up by Natsume-sensei, it’s called-

“Dazai-san, what does that have to do with this?” Atsushi asked, completely exasperated, as he waved at the park behind him.

Dazai, sat lounging on a bench, opened his eyes and frowned.

“So mean Atsushi-kun, I was getting ther-”

“Oi! Shitty Mackerel, cut to the chase and help us set up!”

“Didn’t your mother ever teach you manners? It’s rude to interrupt people, chibi, this is why you have no friends.”

If Chuuya wasn’t in the middle of setting up a welcome banner, he would have charged Dazai right then and there, but Akutagawa was almost done fastening the otherside.

“Dazai-san, please just cut to the chase. Why are we helping with a camp sports day, and why is he here?” Atsushi asked, pointing at Akutagawa.

The mafioso turned a sharp glare on the tiger as Rashoumon carefully picked up a roll of tape and launched it at Atsushi’s head. It hit him right on the forehead.

Atsushi fully turned to face the other boy, who was standing somewhat precariously on the edge of a step ladder, and began to storm over only to be caught by his collar. He jerked back sharply, ending up on his butt at Dazai’s feet, making Akutagawa snicker before turning back to the banner.

“It’s crooked,” Atsushi spat.

“It can’t be worse than your bangs.”

“Oh, ‘cause yours are so much better.”

“This is team bonding,” Chuuya finally cut in, giving up on Dazai. “Your job today is to calmly handle civilians in stressful situations.”

“And what’s more stressful than a bunch of brats high on the joys of youth. Atsushi-kun, can you bring me a balloon?”

Atsushi frowned as he paused in thought.

“I don’t think you can kill yourself with the helium.”

“It’s not for me,” Dazai smiled, jumping up off the bench and strolling over to Chuuya, “it’s for chibi, here.”

Chuuya, who had been using his ability to float up and hold the banner, dropped out of the air with an angry cry as Dazai jumped up and smacked his ass. The gravity manipulator had been expecting some sort of terrorization, it’s why he’d tucked his legs in on himself, and thinking he’d found a way out of Dazai’s antics was truly a mistake.

“We should tie it to his wrist so we don’t lose him in the sea of-oof!”

“Jinko, finish the banner.”

“Would it kill you to say please?!”

At half past eleven, the four camps showed up at the park for the picnic. Elementary school children poured into the park, racing to find the little signs with their group names so they could sit and be sent to get food.

Dazai had just finished setting out the onigiri platters when they arrived while Atsushi and Chuuya brought coolers of juice boxes in from the ADAs car. Akutagawa, for reasons still unknown to Atsushi, was set as greeter.

Laughter and chatter filled the park as the four made plates for the kids and handed them out, and as they shoved their faces with food their councilors went through the itinerary. Tug of war, a tag tournament, the usual.

Atsushi looked over his copy of the itinerary, carefully annotated by Kunikida, and tried to ignore the sharp stare coming from over his shoulder.

While pestering Chuuya, Dazai had accidently destroyed the executive’s itinerary, and so the man had asked to look over Atsushi’s. Which was fine. In fact, Chuuya was starting to grow on Atsushi and vice versa. No, the problem was the other mafioso who refused to ask to see the itinerary. If he asked, Atsushi might say yes, but Akutagaawa was being stubborn and choosing to read awkwardly over the detective’s shoulder.

To thin the crowd out, Dazai and Chuuya would take half the kids on a scavenger hunt down by the river, and Atsushi and Akutagaawa would run a tug of war tournament.

The weretiger wasn’t sure whether he was more terrified of Dazai being near a body of water, Dazai and Chuuya being together, or himself being stuck with Akutagawa. How was this team building?

“Do any of them have any experience with children?” Taeneda asked, cautiously breaking the silence that had fallen over the meeting.

“Nakajima-kun was raised in an orphanage.”

“Any positive experiences?” He pushed uneasily.

“I’m sure Akutagawa-kun will be fine once he warms up to them.”

“That is far from reassuring.”

“Ready?” Atushi called, biting back a laugh at the infectious cheers from the two teams. “Okay, three… two… one… pull!”

He’d barely stepped back when the two teams of ten year olds began yelling and pulling as hard as they could on the thick rope. Around them, the other groups cheered their friends on.

Akutagawa stood back under the shade of a tree, where Atsushi joined him to watch the first match unfold.

The two teams jerked back and forth as the opposing sides gave particularly harsh tugs, until team one finally pulled the center ribbon past their pilon in one particularly hard yank. Cheers erupted from the audience, joined by playful taunts at the losing team. Atsushi was about to set up the next match when he noticed the teams from the first one crowding around the center.

Before he could call out to them, Akutagawa had pushed off the tree and was standing over the kids.

A faint sense of anxiety settled in Atsushi’s stomach as he expected Akutagawa to snap at the kids to get moving. Would he scare them? Atsushi didn’t know how to handle crying children, not to mention the counselors wouldn’t be happy.

He watched as Akutagawa crouched down, and his brows furrowed in confusion as the kids seemed perfectly fine around the ever grouchy man.

“Is everything alright?”

Akutagawa didn’t answer. Instead he stood up, and Atsushi watched as his weight shifted back for a moment like he was pulling on something.

“Everything’s fine, you can start the next match.”

When Akutagawa finally turned around, he was holding hands with a little boy whose eyes were a little red and cheeks were stained with tears. Atsushi began to whip his head around frantically as he looked for a councilor or one of his colleagues, where was the first aid kit, should they call an ambulance?

“Stop gaping, Jinko,” Akutagawa snapped, making the kid laugh. “Just grab a water bottle, napkin, and band aid. He just skinned his knee.”

Snapping out of his panic, Atsushi realized that the boy's right knee was indeed bloody and muddy. He glared at Akutagawa.

“Let’s go sit over there,” he offered to the boy. “That way you can sit while we patch you up.”

The little boy nodded and started pulling Akutagawa off to the nearby bench as Atsushi went to find what he needed.

Akutagawa was surprisingly gentle with the kid, Atsushi could hear him gently talking to the boy, as he cleaned and bandaged his knee. The kid was quickly back on his feet just in time to cheer on the fourth match, leaving the pair by themselves again.

“So you’re secretly good with kids.”

“Worry more about yourself, how do you expect to save anyone if you panic over a skinned knee.”

dazai's and atsushi's are both in hard-to-see/reach places in my head

dazai's is right under his hairline/back of his neck and is usually hidden by hair and/or bandages. atsushi's is behind his right ear.

atsushi found out about it for the first time when those other kids held him down and cut his hair, they saw the mark and told him about it (the kindest thing anyone ever did for him there, right alone with one of the cruelest)

he didn't know how to read coordinates or anything but it was a beacon of hope for him for the rest of his time in the orphanage. he knew enough to determine it was around yokohama, so thats where he headed when he got kicked out

dazai's is seen (and certainly noted) by mori before he even knows it exists. the next person to see it is chuuya, he doesn't mention it (he thinks dazai knows)

it's not until the first time dazai gets injured enough on a job to need yosanos help (even if she can't use her ability on him) that anyone tells him

yosano is like "oh hey, you have the mark too! guess it makes sense, everyone in the agency has had it so far." and dazai is freaking the fuck out (internally, he'd never show it)

kunikida was the first one to see his mark, figure out where it was for and seek out the agency on his own. (his is along side his pointer finger on his right hand.)

ranpo's is on his left collarbone and fukuzawas is right over his heart

they find out about them a few weeks after they meet and go find the building together. its not until after they meet natsume that they know what the building will be used for.

/ yosano discover's hers as a kid and is excited about it, even if she doesn't know what it means. hers is wrapped about her left ankle.

after being drafted she forgets about it mostly, only occasionally rubbing it for luck during the beginning of the war. by the end of it she's so out of it she honestly forgets it exists.

only after she's been taken into the agency by ranpo and fukuzawa does she rediscover it, while relearning to walk. she's more shocked than she should be when the other two show her their matching ones. ranpo just grins at her and tells her he knew she belonged there the whole time.

kenjis is scrawled across his right cheekbone and it's the first thing fukuzawa notices when he goes to meet him in his village. kenji doesn't know how to read coordinates but he can certainly recognize the matching mark on fukuzawas chest.

he's frankly overjoyed to meet the rest of the agency and is eager to go (though he'll miss his village) he wants to meet his soul family

kyouka grows up knowing her mark, located on her hip. her parents are happy about it, teach her about it and find out where it leads. they tell her, if she's ever in danger, if something happens to them, to go to this place and find these people with the same mark. she promises she will.

it doesn't work out that way.

kyouka's mark is the only secret she manages to keep in the mafia. she does whatever she has to to hid it and never tells anyone, not akutagawa, not kouyou and definitely not the boss.

it's not until she sees the mark behind atsushi's ear when he collapses onto her after saving her on the train does she realize she's finally getting to do what she promised her parents.

they came into the agency, naomi leading her brother, wrist first with two applications in hand.

Hc that because Dazai and Chuuya are somewhat okay with each other (i.e. the whole four years now that they've reconciled in soukoku ways) the ADA now has a sugar daddy that is Chuuya who stepped inside the building with his black card to throw a bento to Dazai and promptly said "Wtf, you guys work like this?"

Chuuya has been hailed as a god in ADA. Even the President likes him because Chuuya built a cat room because of how many cats began to appear after Chuuya bought cat food for the president.

There is now another friendly war between the Port Mafia and the ADA. And that is who gets to have Chuuya for the majority of the day.

Chuuya is blissfully unaware while Dazai is cackling.

Cursed things that happen within the ada (purely crack/headcanon I'm just bored)

Atsushi got separated from the group after being chased by the target he ended up hiding in a local furry convention, it was surprisingly affective, Dazai still brings it up

Kunikida was chasing down someone with the ability to turn into objects and it turned into a really cursed game of prop hunt (the ability users was just a kid trying to make their way, they got the necessary help)

There was an ability users using a travelling carnival as a cover so Dazai and Kyouka went in pretending to be family (because free entry for families) it was going well until they ran into Kouyou who was conducting business and Dazai looked her in the eye and introduced Kyouka as his daughter (he could have said they were siblings he's just a little shit)

Dazai has done drag multiple times for missions, no one knows were he gets all the stuff. Kunikida accidentally asked him out once and got really close to sacrificing the mission to punch Dazai

Ranpo, Atsushi, and Kyouka all got the train together and they ended up in Tokyo. No one knows how this happened

Kyouka and Atsushi were sent to help find a lost cat. It ended up in a tree and wouldn't come down so Kyouka called Kouyo who called Chuuya who got the cat down and brought them both lunch and gave Atsushi his number for if Dazai gets too annoying (he also lent him some cookbooks)

Atsushi, Dazai and Yosano were on an overnight mission that involved a bit of alcohol and Atsushi ended up getting a really cursed version of the talk which he hasn't recovered from (once Yosano stopped being hungover she gave him the proper version because we know the orphanage didn't teach him shit)

Kyouka has kicked Kunikidas ass in a sparring match. Kunikida originally refused to spar with her because she's a child but got double dog dared by Yosano and Dazai and proceeded to loose

Yosano and Kyouka go on girls days which is basically just knife and other assorted weaponry shopping on the company card, Fukuzawa occasionally joins them (and even more occasionally Kouyou)

Kyouka has repeatedly tried to teach Atsushi how use a sword in one eventful case he ended up pinned to the ceiling (progress is slow but he's getting there)

The only people up late are Dazai, Kyouka, Yosano, and sometimes Atsushi. Their 3am macdonalds trips are legendary

What's even more legendary is Dazai's tiktok page

They have game nights that rarely turn out well. Turns out card games with ex mafia members is a bad idea, Atsushi is also surprisingly good

The table has been flipped, it also got broken when Chuuya was invited to uno and was sat between Ranpo and Dazai (the meeting table has been through a lot)

Atsushi is on somewhat decent terms with Chuuya to Dazais horror. Chuuya once took Atsushi hat shopping and that was one of the times Yokohama got close to the return of the demon prodigy

On the walls of one of the bathroom stalls there is an ongoing argument about pineapple on pizza

The office prank war is the reason that to this day all forms of glitter are banned from the main office

Decaff coffee is also banned (unofficially but the decaff and regular coffee mix up led to some of the lowest productivity the office had ever seen)

Kenji doesn't drink coffee and he is hailed as a god amongst men

To cheer people up kenji once made a star chart but people started getting competitive so it had to be taken down

Ranpo will know what's up and he and I will immediately team up

First order of business when staying in the BSD universe: Befriend Ranpo and Yosano, therefore gaining access to snacks, braincells, and a variety of sharp weapons

Kyouka and Kenji will be my new best friends and I will make it my job to give them normal teenage experiences. It's important for their mental and emotional development

What do you think of Mori's role in BSD?

I have talked a little bit of Mori and his ability here.

As far as his role in the story goes I think he embodies two things.

1) The mafia.

2) The past.

1) As far as the first point is concerned I would like to highlight the symbolic role of the mafia in the story.

I have talked a little bit about it in the post I linked above:

At the same time, on a macro level, the story needs a resolution of some type between the Mafia and the Ada since it is obvious that the two organizations are linked because of the past of many characters in the ADA being linked to the mafia somehow. Dazai, Yosano and Fukuzawa all have a past which involves one or more members of the mafia, for example.

And here:

The  mafiosi are who the detectives could become if they were to completely  lose themselves in their most violent and darkest parts, while the HD  are who the detectives could become if they were to embrace simplicistic  ideals over people. This is also why this arc has been particularly  hard on Kunikida since among the members of the ADA he is the one who  risks to do so the most.

In other words the mafia is nothing more than the societal structure which organizes and takes charge of those people society doesn’t care about. The mafia symbolically represents the part of the city nobody wants to aknowledge and everybody fears. In other words, it is some kind of macro-representation of a collective jungian shadow.

The tripartic alliance perfectly illustrates this point:

The alliance is based on the collaboration among three organizations each one associated to a specific time of the day.

The Military Police and the Ability Secret Service are associated with daytime because they represent the accepted authority and law. They are who the citizens look up to and they must adhere to the rules and the laws.

The ADA is associated to the evening because they are an in-between the day and the night. They want to preserve the law and try not to act outside of it, but also see its limits and use loopholes and bend the rules to help people. They can look both at the government and at the criminal world critically, but they have also been shown to work well with both.

Finally, the mafia represents the night i.e. something which is totally not bent by the rules of the day. They are that part of society which was in chaos after the war and over which Mori seized control.

The members of the mafia are basically people society gave up on and who have no interest into being re-integrated in it:

Let’s highlight that Hirotsu has “society” among his dislikes and he is one of the oldest members. In short, he embodies why a person prefers spending their whole life in a criminal organization rather than in the respectable world. It is because of a dislike for it.

As far as Mori is concerned he says so:

He claims to love Yokohama even with its dark side and it seems that he has taken upon himself the difficult mission to organize this side of the city. However, the interesting thing is that, under his leadership, the mafia and the underworld have basically become nothing more than a mirror of society and the same abusive structures and dynamics if not worse have been established. However, this is also why Mori has been so successful.

Mori is loved and accepted by his subordinates specifically because he gave the mafia members the illusion that they can be a society on their own. He gives rules to the criminal world and organizes it, so that it can be more tolerable. After all, it is not by chance that the people most loyal to Mori are those who have experienced a much more chaotic world:

At the same time, these people are also somehow convinced of this:

They have accepted the world of the night as the only world where they can live and prefer this world to have some kind of law, so that they can feel more like people.

However, here lies the contradiction of the mafia and of Mori. All in all, this regulation of the world of the night is also what lets this world survive and favours specific dynamics from which both the governement and the mafia gain something, but which have negative impacts on the individual.

Kyouka’s case is a perfect example of that.

All in all, Kyouka is a victim of both the government and the mafia. On one hand the government chose to use her as a scapegoat to protect itself. On the other hand the mafia weaponized her ability.

She is also an example of how these two realities which should stay separate have actually built a twisted and beneficial relationship. The government can use the mafia as a scapegoat and a place where they can recycle individuals they don’t really want to take care of, while the mafia takes these individuals and turns them into pawns.

To summarize, the mafia represents that part of society which should remain hidden and is accepted as long as it does. Mori is the one who made this possible by transforming the underworld in a society he administers and in this way he makes it tolerated, but also makes sure that the true problem behind these people who have not a place to belong is never addressed nor solved. So, in a sense, Mori is weaponizing a social problem.

2) I have talked about BSD addressing a generational conflict in the meta on the Guild Arc whose link is above.

One of the reasons why the integration between the two organizations and in general among the different sides of Yokohama is so difficutl is not only because of the characters’ personal problems (unwillingness to cooperate, old grudges etc.), but also because the younger characters who have the best chance to change things find themselves in a flawed system they inherited by older characters.

All in all the series explores the theme of having to deal with the consequences of one’s parents’ actions (both negative and positive) and the characters all need to make themselves independent from parental and mentor figures, so that they can become their own people.

As that meta makes clear Mori is one of the representative of the old generation. He has contributed to the current peaceful situation Yokohama is in, but at the same time he has also been exploiting other people’s weaknesses.

Simbolically, it is interesting that his ability is the same, but also almost the opposite of Kyouka’s aka the character I used in the already mentioned meta to explore the theme of facing a parent’s legacy.

Both Mori and Kyouka’s abilities consist in guardian entities who protect their host, but who also exhibit specific personalities.

As it has already been stated Demon Snow represents Kyouka’s parents’ legacy which is ambiguous and with which Kyouka has to reconcile.

Elise is instead a child because symbolically she represents Mori’s tendency to manipulate and exploit the weak. She can also represent Mori’s own emotional side which is underdevolped like a child is.

Demon is initially presented as a dangerous and ruthless monster, but turns out to actually have good intentions and to be willing to help Kyouka, while Elise is introduced as a harmless little girl, but she is later revealed to be a violent ability.

This also fits with how Kyouka and Mori themselves are introduced in the series. Kyouka appears as a cold assassin, while Mori as a friendly doctor. However, these appearences are soon subverted.

However, the most interesting thing when it comes to this foiling is this:

Mori has perfect control over Elise to the point that even her current tantrums happen because Mori wants her personality to resemble Yosano’s, while Kyouka can’t influence the Demon’s behaviour and has just recently gained enough control to use her ability without her cellphone.

This perfectly shows where the two characters are in termsof control over their lives and the things around them. Mori is an adult and one of the most influencial people in the city, whereas Kyouka is a child who has been moving from a horrible place to another until she found someone willing to help her.

All in all, Mori is linked to these two concepts and I am expecting for him to be overcome in the end precisely because he embodies them too much. On one hand I think the conflict between the mafia and the ADA should be settled, but it seems difficult as long as Mori is around because his involvement in traumatic episodes concerning Dazai and Yosano’s pasts makes so that him being around makes so that the conflict is always there even if asleep. On the other hand the younger generation should surpass the previous one and do better and this symbolically overlaps with exponents of the old generation leaving the scene either because they die or because they lose power.

Specifically, I think Mori is bound to play a role in Dazai’s arc because of the two of them being obviously foils, as both Fifteen and the Dark Era show.

Mori is who Dazai could have become if Oda’s death had not made him realize something important:

“He’s a friend”

Dazai is as ruthless and as manipulative as Mori is, but he is not ready to give up a genuine and healthy connection he has made and in this way he both learns and shows that he is able to think outside of an utilitaristic mainframe, while Mori is not able to do so. He probably cares about Dazai to an extent, but he won’t develop this emotional attachment into something healthier.

That said, Dazai’s arc in the manga might very well involve him becoming someone completely different from Mori and so overcoming the influence the man has had on Dazai’s life once and for all and solving his personal conflict with the mafia in a positive way.

As a matter of fact, Dazai’s past with the mafia is brought up pretty often and he has left some important relationships unsolved. The one with Akutagawa is probably the most important, but there are also the ones with Chuuya, Koujo and Q who all knew him and have shown different levels of resentment over him leaving the organization.

At the same time, Dazai is trying to recreate a new version of the soukoku partnership he had with Chuuya and in this way he is stepping into Mori’s shoes as the one continuing the “tradition”.

However, I think that shin soukoku will actually answer Mori’s question:

“Only a diamond can polish a diamond. I wanna see for myself if that is true”.

The problem with Mori’s attempt is that it was purely utilitaristic, while I think that Dazai might be willing to make Akutagawa and Atsushi work together both because he needs them to fight against a strong opponent, but also because he might be trying in this way to fix the damage he has made to Akutagawa. It is still a pretty indirect and manipulative attempt, but at least Dazai is recognizing that there is another level to people other than their strengths and weaknesses. And it is probable that Natsume, by talking about diamonds, was referring to people’s interiority rather than to their abilities. In other words, Mori might have attempted to find an answer to Natsume’s words by onlu combining the ability of two people, while Dazai might find a better and more meaningful one by having his mentees develop psychologically thanks to each other.

These are my thoughts so far!

I know BSD is amazing and wonderful(I can't live without it~), but I'm honestly angry that Chuuya is still in Poe's book...? Like, I feel he was just violently tossed to the side and he's not coming back until Dazai decides to use his ability, or if he solves the mystery in the novel. I'm honestly pissed that he's beEN IN THAT FUCKING BOOK FOR 200 DAYS NOW. FFS SET HIM FREE~

I think that even if BSD is overall a beautiful piece of work and we all love it so much, it’s right for us to be a little bummed as /disappointed/ about how Chuuya has been treated lately.  

I’m honestly pretty mad about it and, to me, it doesn’t make any sense and is2g if he comes back just to be used by Dazai again I’m gonna set this manga series on fire. 

Because it’s honestly unfair, he’s the only character who’s still suffering from the Mafia/ADA war. We’ve been robbed of the Ranpo/Chuuya dynamic (that would honestly have been LIT), of the character development his stay in the book we hoped would have brought, of everything. And I don’t think this trend will get better in the future and, at this point, I’m ready to have no news of him for a whole year. 

I’m pretty fond of the theory that it was originally Dazai’s plan to put Chuuya in the book, so that he would be far away and -safe- from Fyodor and, at the same time, he wouldn’t be in the middle of the war (trusting Chuuya’s ability to get out of the book on his own). But I just know that this is not the case and he simply was, like you said, tossed aside to make room for other characters. And this hurts me because his character deserves...so much more. 

Also, I find it unrealistic for Mori to not want his best asset and most trusted executive back. So do the thing Boss, please. 

On a side note, I think we don’t fully realize how much Chuuya is missing because Bones is spoiling us with all the Chuuya. Other than animating, Bones knows a thing or two about marketing and how to keep the fan base engaged: it’s very telling that they decided to include two original scenes that weren’t in the manga just to deliver a bunch of seconds of new Chuuya content. -> yes, from his appearance to the thing he said, it was all another marketing move. 

I won’t be surprised if Bones decided to go rogue and deliver all the Chuuya (and soukoku) content they want in the anime too, creating an original timeline for him. And, I wouldn’t be disappointed in the slightest. 

Chuuya is still Chuuya, and, if the manga won’t feature him again, I’d gladly take anything Bones has to offer.

BSD Chapter 50

A little summary for what I can read from the raw (my Jap sucks so please bear with me and correct me if I’m wrong at any parts. I’m just doing this to practice my Japanese :”>)

                                              SPOILERS AHEAD

- Fukuzawa and Mori both left their beds and went to a place that only them know to fight a final battle, with the purpose of protecting the people from both organizations.

- (So Elise-chan is actually not a real girl, but something created from Mori’s ability? I thought she was a real girl for forever)

- The ADA’s cat disappeared and Haruno was worried because everytime it disappeared bad things happened.

- Dazai was in the hospital talking to Tanizaki, he also didn’t know where Fukuzwa and Mori went, only guessing that it’s a place that have a connection with both of them, and wonder what “that person” would do in this case.

- Meanwhile, we got some flashback about Fukuzawa and Mori. So it turns out Fukuzawa used to be sent to protect Mori by Natsume sensei (Natsume Souseki - author of “I am a cat”, mentioned previously in The Dark Era). Dazai mentioned later that this Natsume sensei was the one who supported the foundation of the ADA (and apparantly the Port Mafia and the Special Ability Department too)

- Back to the present, Fukuzawa managed to destroy Elise-chan and was going to kill Mori but Mori mentioned that the mafia and the ADA is not the same so if Fukuzawa died, maybe nothing will happen but if Mori die, the whole Port Mafia will run wild and start a bloody war etc. and when Fukuzawa is being shaken by that news, stabbed him in the neck (I will fucking need explanation why Fukuzawa is still able  to talk and walk etc. after that)

- Kunikida found out that the key he found in Katai’s house is a signal Katai left to him saying that someone’s come to help and he’s okay. Because the key he found has a date on it - the date when Kunikida came to rescue Katai after being locked up accidentally in the office for a long holiday (cuz Katai brought the whole futon thing with him to the office lol). (Actually I’m not quite sure if it’s the date Katai was locked up or the date Kunikida came to rescue him, but based on the message, I guess it should be the latter). 

- And for the biggest plot twist in this chapter, the cat turned into Natsume Souseki sensei himself and his ability name is, obviously “I am a cat”. He was the one who saved Katai and told Fukuzawa and Mori to prove that the two organizations are not something that the rats can feed on

Next week will be Port Mafia and ADA’s counterattack. (or so I guess lol). 

PS: I have a feeling Chuuya will stay in the book until everything is over and when he finally gets out, he will be like wtf everything is done already???
