The New Factory

It is funny how things kinda lined up.

At the start of this week, Factorio: Space Age launched, aka the 2.0 update. Which is an update that I have been watching the development for some time now, reading the Friday Facts almost every week. And because I already showed my addiction love for this game on the 4° day, why not make another update on the factory after so many months?

Yes, this is the state the factory was. Not that pretty.

I never actually played Factorio in survival mode, so I pretty much fucked up a lot. The main one was not preparing myself for Biters (the enemies) attacking my base on the start, which made me into a fight or flight response trying to research weapons and creating the box around the base.

This box really didn't help on trying to scale the base. Does it look cool? Yes, but as time passed, trying to make progress just ended up being more and more difficult. Space started to shirk, and finding places to put assemblies and pass belts became impossible, so going outside was necessary.

To do it, I needed to have a safe space to build. And because I, again, didn't know how to play the game properly, and had some quality-of-life mods, I used one of their features to build entire canals that separated me from Biters nests, so they wouldn't be able to attack or expand in the direction of the base.

And it worked! But consumed so many resources that I had to wait hours to gear up and complete everything.

Having to wait so much, seeing my resources running out inside the box and the difficulty to expand the base, let me think: "time to build an actual base, time to build a mega-base"; which again, in high sight, was a bad idea, since I didn't even have enough automation and even construction bots to scale to a "mega" state. But I tried, and again, started to fail. The main problem is that I didn't want to actually learn the crafting times, the resource amounts, the math needed to scale a base in Factorio, I just wanted something big, and something big fast.

The main idea was trying to use trains for everything, which kinda works, but makes everything need a lot more waiting and velocity. I wasn't able to make sections of the base produce things fast enough to other section to use and be always in motion, trains mostly waited until they're filled, and constructing everything at this scale was so fucking slow since I didn't have the resources for it, that it ended up just being a chore of waiting.

I stagnated.

Space

However, with the launch of Space Age, a new motivation arrived, which lined perfectly with a need to actually rest after my working days. Knowing that this update would come with a lot of new functionalities and that it would be a 2.0 release, a major version, and that old features (specially trains) would simply be incompatible with older versions, made me have a second chance to restart my survival world.

And that's what I did! I haven't played a lot, since finding time is somewhat difficult, but this week I tried harder to play at least one hour per day (somehow I didn't stay up all night, probably because my partner takes care of me better than I could myself). Progress is being slow, but I'm finally taking the time to actually learn the game, the math, and how to prevent things from exploding.

It's being fun to have fun again.

And I would end this post with some metaphor on things such as "I didn't want to learn things the proper way and take shortcuts", or "because of something unexpected, I started to panic", or "it is not good to jump into bigger things out of nowhere", or "sometimes is better to just restart"... but you're smart enough to figure those things out on your own.

Selfshiptober day 1 Confession./Night.

A short follow-up to my actual confession fic, "Snowberry Tonic" :33

"you love me?"

The words came out quiet at first—almost a whisper—as Fennorian stood, taking Cirwedh with him as he rose. The previous moment of passion had rendered them both breathless, and as she soaked in the warm afterglow of their kiss Cirwedh simply hummed. The smile she wore was gentle, and satisfied.

"Fennorian," she took his hands in hers, and a flowering strand wrapped around them, "I love you. Until the end of my days, and in whatever comes after, I will love you."

His heart was in his throat by now, his skin flushed where the vines connected them. Only hours before he had been ready to hide in this basement for the next week if he could, staying far from the sight and mind of Solitude, but now he found himself wanting to take Cirwedh in his arms and parade her around the city. By some miracle he stayed on his feet when she planted another soft kiss to his knuckles. The vine had vanished but what soft petals remained spread her warmth up his arms as she pecked his cheeks next.

"I love you too." The confession left his lips before he even thought to move them, spilling forth in an all-too-excited stutter. He watched as her eyes lit up, starry pupils wide as she brought his hands to her cheeks and kissed each palm. Before she could move on to his wrists the creak of old wood caught her ear. A moment later they could hear as the hall above was filled with slurred voices and heavy feet. Fennorian can't help the rumble of laughter as someone calls out a pair of boots left by the hearth.

"I should probably get those, before some Nord thinks they can shove their stinkin' club fer feet in em." Cirwedh scratched at the back of her neck, almost awkward as she slid off the wooden desk and back onto the floor. A sudden rush of confidence surged through Fennorian and as she moved to take her leave he reached forward and pulled her back for one last kiss. With all the tenderness in the world he made known his love for her, and when finally they pulled apart a warm fluttering had grown in his chest. Cirwedh squeezed his hands in hers before turning and leaving, almost vanishing once within the shadows. For a while Fennorian simply stood, hand to his lips as he stared past the darkness and back to that first kiss. Despite the deep gnawing doubt that this might all be a dream, he turned back to the work behind him, and spent the rest of the night feeling lighter than before.

Day Ten—Etched Christmas Bauble

I got a phone call today, but after one ring, my phone died. That's what happens when you don't charge it for several days. I knew it was the blood donor centre, though. They had called me on Friday as well, but I failed to ring them back before they closed for the weekend.

When I've sufficiently charged my phone and return the phone call, I'm informed they had probably needed me earlier today, because there are no available spots for the rest of the week.

"Alright," I reply. "Just call me if you need me then, I guess."

He could book me in for next week, of course, but I prefer to stay available in case they need someone in an emergency.

Not two minutes later he calls me back.

"Did you change your mind?"

"No," he laughs. "Someone just cancelled."

"Oh!" I reply. "For when?"

"Now."

This was not Michael Myers’ plan. Getting held up in a fight with Loomis gave the police enough time to surround Michael’s childhood home. “You might as well surrender,” Loomis suggests. Michael grunts and stabs the psychiatrist. He continues as the man lies on the floor.

A deputy urges the Sheriff to send officers into the home. “He won’t be able to fight off our bullets,” the Sheriff argues. The police can’t believe Michael is walking out of the house as if he’s not surrounded by the police with guns aimed at him. “Fire!” The Sheriff yells. Michael walks down the stairs towards the police as they fire at him. The bullets came close to hitting him. Michael’s walk turns into running toward the police, knife in hand. The police are unaware until they watch his first victim die. Michael smiles under his mask as the police try to kill him as he slices the life out of them. A few officers try to run from the scene, adding to Michael’s enjoyment. To him, this is simply a game. It’s not long before there’s a trail of bodies. As the last man standing, Michael admires his work before disappearing into the shadows.

Bad idea: Age gap discourse but in a fantasy land where there's multiple races who have vastly different lifespans and life styles.

Is it wrong for a 27 year old human to date a 140 year old stone elf, considering most stone elves don't get out of diapers till their 30s?

Is it wrong for a 80 year old dwarf to date a two year old fire wisp, when fire wisps only live up to 5 years (between the eruptions) and have memories of their past lives, so in a way they're "born" at age 400,000+? That octogenarian dwarf is way younger than the fire wisp that's only physically younger than some of the socks the dwarf has!

Is it wrong for a chronomancer who was never born to date, well, anyone? They are zero years old and infinity years old and negative one hundred and seventeen years old all at once. They look like an old human, sure, with the long white beard and the wrinkly skin, but as far as anyone can tell, they've always looked like that. We've seen the cave paintings.

Is it wrong for a 30 year old lizardman (that's old in lizardman years) to date a human who is 60 years old in biological years (because of aging spells), 26 years old in lived-experience years, but only 13 years old in calendar years? (ie, they were born 13 years ago, but spent some of that time in sideways timelines, so they've lived more years than have passed in their home timeline?)

Is it wrong for a 12,000 year old dragon date a pile of 400 kobolds when kobolds only live like 10 years on average, but reach full maturity in one year? And if you disagree, can you do anything about it? You do know what happened to the last policeman who tried to arrest a dragon, right? Their city is still smoldering, 50 years later.

Is it wrong for anyone to date the time worm? It's the same age, every year. So the age gap can only intensify. If you start dating the time worm when you're both the same age, when do you break it off because you've become too much older than them?

And most confusing of all... What about the fairies? They could be anything between a thousand and a day old, they would lie about their age either way, and they can look like whatever they want. There's fairies we know for a fact have been around since the founding of The City of Towers, who met the silent mother herself, and also look like they're at most ten years old. Is it wrong to date them, or just really uncomfortable for everyone who sees it? And on the other side there's fairies who are "born" (hatched? They come from plants, I'm not sure what the verb even would be. Seeded? Sprouted, maybe) this week who are already appearing like middle-aged men and dancing with widows in what looks like a scheme to run off with her fortune but they never take the money, because what would a fairy want with worthless metal discs? Maybe fairies have a hive mind or genetic memory or reincarnation with full memories, they'd never tell you or give you a straight (or consistent) answer anyway.

Stonefolk are really the only inter-race dating situation anyone can agree on. They're unthinking & unmoving solid rock during the day, so those hours don't count. Thus their "real age" is a nice even half of their true age. So if you meet a stonefolk who was dug out 30 years ago, watch out: that's a 15 year old, and if you're a 25 year human, that's too young for you, even though their dig-date is five years before your birth-date.
