Thought it'd be fun to show exactly when Ziri's and Janessa's dynamic changed, since he wasn't always so meek around her~

"M-m'lady, does— does 'Ziri' mean anything?"

Janessa sharply looks up from her work, staring down the poor schmuck who drew the short straw and had to confront her. She speaks in a dangerously tense voice.

"Why do you ask?"

"We— well, it's just the, uh— that new fusion, right? The sea elf and the dragon— drake, I mean—"

She flares her nostrils, and the schmuck's heart skips a few beats.

"S-sorry, m'lady. Whatever it is, it keeps— it keeps yelling "Ziri" over and over. They say it's been doing that since day one."

"They?" She stands up. "Who, exactly, knows about this?"

"I don't— I don't know for sure, m'lady. It's just been circling around."

She slams her hands on the table. "This has been going on for nearly a week now, and instead of coming straight to me, all you pathetic shits have done is gossip amongst yourselves?!"

They shakily step back as she steps towards them.

"I— I didn't know, m'lady. Not until yester—"

"Then why didn't you tell me yesterday?!"

"I'm s— I'm sorry, m'lady. I'm so sorry. I didn't— no one knew it was so important. I'm sure if— well, I would have told you straight away if I'd known."

Janessa pinches the bridge of her nose. She's going to have to wipe so many memories before this gets out of hand. And she'll have to do it again and again if she doesn't put a stop to this. But if she just silences that thing, or bans access to it, it'll raise questions, and apparently rumors will spread before she's made aware, and... ugh.

She may as well just kill it. It's served its purpose.

"Stay here. Breathe a word and you'll be demoted."

"Y-yes, m'lady." Unable to handle the tension, the poor schmuck makes the poor decision to flash Janessa an uneasy, joking smile. "But— but with all due respect, m'lady, I'm an unpaid intern. What position could I possibly be demoted to?"

She turns to glare at them, and they're suddenly stricken with a deep, DEEP regret.

"Horizontal and six feet under."

With a huff, Janessa finally slams the door behind her. She'll have someone clean up that mess later.

As she storms towards the fusion's cell, she figures she may as well get a little fun out of this.

"Ziri~ Guess what~"

No response. She rolls her eyes and makes the telepathy louder.

"ZIRI!"

After a few seconds, she barely manages to make out a quiet moan in her head.

"Guess what~"

No response again. She shakes the gem.

"...mhhhhh..."

"We're not done with your sibling yet~!" She smugly emphasizes the singularity of the word.

No response.

"Aren't you excited to see what horrible things will happen to it next, Ziri?"

No response. She sighs. Today just isn't her day, is it?

"Spoiler alert: I'm going to kill it."

No response. She shakes the gem more violently.

"Are you listening to me?"

"..........mhm."

"I'm going to slowly torture it to death and make you watch."

"mhm."

"It's going to be even worse than the initial fusion."

"mm."

This is getting more annoying than that idiot intern.

"If you say a full sentence I'll consider making it quicker."

No response.

"A word. Can you manage one single word with your broken fucking brain?"

Nothing.

If Ziri's going to be like this, is it even worth bothering to make a scene of the fusion's death? Janessa has better things to do if this won't be any fun.

Just before the door of its cell, she pauses. She has the fusion of his siblings, something that should get to him more than anything, in the palm of her hand. It'd be such a wasted opportunity to throw it away...

Suddenly, an idea strikes her. A genius idea.

With renewed vigor, she thrusts the door open. She's immediately bombarded with broken cries of "Ziri!" as she was informed.

As soon as the fusion sees her, however, it interrupts itself with a roar, angrily straining towards her with no regard for the manacles digging into its flesh.

"Tsk, tsk," she chides. "To think, you were once a great leader. Well, half of you, anyway. Powerful... Strategic... Respected..." She smirks. "Almost not a complete failure..."

It snarls at her as she takes a step towards it.

"And now you've been reduced to this. Helpless. Brainless. Ridiculous. Nothing but blabbering monster only capable of pitifully crying for its brother, lashing out with all the strategy of a rabid dog. Truly pathetic."

As she slowly approaches the fusion, it slowly backs away from her. If she didn't know better, she'd think it was afraid. But she can clearly see its arms at the ready, gradually less restricted as it nears the base of its chains.

"That said... the headache you've caused me could almost be considered clever. Deliberate, at least. Did Chaos leave more braincells intact than I thought? Or are you really just that sad, crying out for him as if he'll appear out of thin air?"

With a low growl, it raises an arm, claws crackling with electricity. Janessa takes one more step forward, noting that she's just about within range of an attack.

"Well, ask and you shall receive."

At the last second, she steps away and summons Ziri in her place, snickering as he takes the blow with a startled yelp. That ought to get his attention.

With a weak groan, he half-heartedly tries to push himself off the ground, his electrified muscles eagerly working against his efforts. He doesn't get the chance to make much progress before the fusion launches itself at him, squeezing him tightly with every limb it can control enough to wrap around him.

His exhausted expression doesn't betray his mental state nearly so much as the garden on his horns, every plant almost entirely dead. She watches them come to life ever so slightly as he stares at the fusion, then looks to her with confusion. When he finally speaks, his voice is painfully hoarse from disuse.

"What—" He hisses through his teeth as the fusion shifts, pressing its bloody skin against the charred laceration on his face where scales once were. "What are you doing?"

"There you go! See? It wasn't so hard to use your words."

He rolls his eyes.

"I suppose I've just had a change of heart. People can change, you know."

He lets out a tired sigh, the sparse life in his garden already withering away, and hollowly whispers, "Just... get on with it. I have an appointment with the floor to get back to."

"I'm sure the floor will understand. A surprise roommate sounds like an excusable absence, don't you think?"

"A sur..." He blinks. "What?"

"Well, it's not worth the trouble keeping it out here, and I don't really care enough to kill it, so you're stuck with it now. Let it be a reminder that your actions have consequences. Aside from that, I couldn't care less what you do with it."

"You're... you're letting me..."

His fruitless search for words is soon cut off by a sob, his flowers gradually coming back to life as he lets it all out, to Janessa's relief. That much of her plan is working, at least.

Once she binds the fusion to the gem, she dismisses it, leaving only herself and Ziri in the cell. She makes a show of dusting her hands off, not bothering to hide her excitement.

With an unsteady breath, he narrows his watery eyes with her.

"What's the catch?"

"Whatever could you mean?" She smiles innocently. "Can't I just do good things for you out of the kindness of my heart?"

A bitter snort escapes him. "Oh, there's definitely a catch, then."

He tries to stand again, but she waggles her finger.

"Ah-ah-ah. Stay down."

He sneers at her and continues standing up. Effortlessly, she jerks his denim lead downwards, and the strength of the movement is magnified enough to send him crashing into the floor.

"Stay down. Unless, of course... you want me to take your sibling back."

Uncomfortably rubbing his throat, he shoots her a wary glare.

"...You wouldn't. I'd get sad again. That's why you let me have them, right? So I'd feel better and have more entertaining reactions to your BS?"

"I never said I'd take it back permanently. I'd just... borrow it for a little bit. Have some fun. And then I'd return it. But if you don't like what some stupid, tired slime did to it for science..."

Ziri scoffs at the word.

"...Then you're going to hate what I'll do to it in my right mind for fun. You don't want to see what that entails, do you?"

He lets out a long, angry hiss, and finally mutters, "...No."

"What was that? I think you forgot a certain title I'm to be addressed with."

It's the moment of truth. Ziri glares at her with a seething rage. Janessa returns his gaze with a grin.

"...No..." He grits his teeth. "...m'lady."

Her grin widens.

"Never thought I'd see the day."

He sneers at her again, but to her delight, it isn't enough to mask his growing unease.

"Now, then. Elbows and knees, face on the floor." She snickers at his indignant expression. "See why I told you to stay down? I'm just so thoughtful that I wanted to make this easier for you."

"Easier," Ziri grumbles.

"Oh, did you forget the response to a command too?"

He forces himself to growl, "...Yes... m'lady."

Oh, the sight of him prostrating himself for her is glorious.

She plants her boot on his head with a satisfied laugh, and she makes sure to leave it there for a while, waiting until the tension is thick enough to cut with her dagger before finally addressing him.

"Let me make myself perfectly clear. I will allow you to keep your sibling, heal it, and help it however you please, and it will remain safe and unharmed so long as you remain obedient."

She shifts more of her weight onto his head, eliciting a whispered moan of pain.

"Should you disobey me, however, I will have no qualms about making it pay however I feel appropriate." Her voice lowers bitterly, and she has just enough self control to keep from outright stomping on him. "Such payment will be exponentially increased if you pull a stunt like that coup ever again. Understood?"

Ziri takes a deep, shaky breath. "Understood... m'lady."

"Excellent."

She lifts her foot. She can almost see him consider getting up, just the slightest little twitch of movement, but he stays put.

Excellent, indeed.

"As much as I'd love to keep playing with this new development, thanks to your idiot sibling, I have some memories to erase. Perhaps we'll continue afterwards. I may need to destress after such a ruckus, and come to think of it, I just so happen to have some blood I need help cleaning up. Sound good?"

"What the ju— je— what in the fresh flowery fields do you think the answer to that is?!"

"I think it's two itty bitty words."

After pounding the floor a while, he finally manages to vocalize something other than barely-stifled screams of frustration. "Yes. M'lady."

She drags him to his hooves with the lead and gleefully pinches his cheek. "Look at you, you're already getting the hang of it!"

"Fantastic. M'lady."

Peeved, he starts to shove himself away, but she jerks him back towards her.

"Oh, no, no, you don't get to do that anymore. Put your arms down."

Something even more fun than anger begins to stir as he obeys her, his hand clenched into a trembling fist. He hastily mutters, "yes, m'lady," before she reminds him.

"There you go~" She pinches his cheek again, more forcefully this time, and grins when he grits his teeth and lets her. "Oh, this is going to be fun."

They lock eyes for a moment, just long enough for her to watch his defiance melt into pure, delicious fear.

"Don't you—" His voice cracks most amusingly. "Don't you have to go... erase those memories now? M'lady?"

"I do..." Her hand travels to his hair, her fingers idly tangling in the curls as he stands perfectly, powerlessly still. "Oh, but rumors have already been spreading for days now. What's a few more minutes spent cooling off first, hm?"

"P... please. Please give me some time to... to process this. M'lady. It's— it's a huge change to take in. Please."

"Hmmm..." She curls her fingers into a fist and pulls him closer to her, giggling as he does nothing but whimper, before she finally lets go. "I'll take it easy on you this time. One last thing, and I'll leave you be."

"I-I appreciate it, m'lad— EEEEE!" Ziri shrieks and reels backwards as she whips out her iron dagger.

"Cut yourself."

He looks like he'd be pale as a ghost if he had blood to lose. Trembling, he chokes out, "With— with that? M'lady?"

"Yes."

"I-I've, uh— I've changed my mind, m'lady."

"Too late~" She holds it further out to him, laughing as he flinches back. "Take it."

"...Y— yes, m'lady." Slowly, he reaches his shaky hand towards the dagger and gingerly grabs it by the handle, nearly dropping it when Janessa lets go.

"Choose a spot. Anywhere will do."

"Y-yes... m'lady..." He frantically looks over his body, and eventually positions the blade above his left forearm.

"And give yourself a little slice. A prick, even. I just want to see you break the skin."

"Yes..."

He grits his teeth.

"...Yes..."

He squeezes his eyes shut.

"......Yes......"

He tenses up, willing himself to move.

"...I can't. I can't do it. Please. I—"

"Pity. I wasn't expecting to have to borrow your sibling so soon. What do you think would be the most fun punishment to inflict for your first failure?"

"Please..."

"I could turn it inside out, perhaps."

"Please..."

She smirks as tears streak down his face.

"I could unfuse it too. I could do more than unfuse it, in fact. I could take it apart bit by bit and leave its consciousness in every single—"

A piercing scream rings out.

"...Holy shit."

With a breathless laugh, she watches him panic over the dagger impaling his arm.

He desperately claws at it until it eventually falls out, too frantic to think clearly. Terrified even by how it bounces slightly towards him, he clumsily scrambles away, clutching his arm tightly.

All she can do for a moment is stare, unable to believe her eyes.

"You really will do anything for me, won't you?"

He wordlessly stares up at her, his wide eyes filled with the terror of a cornered animal.

"Say, 'yes, m'lady.'"

"Y-yes, m'lady," he whispers.

Oh, the power she wields.

"Please— please. I did it. Please send me back. Please."

"M'lady."

"M-m'lady. Please, m'lady. Please."

She eyes him a while longer, almost intoxicated by the sight.

Her favorite little toy is finally acting the part, and it's every bit worth the wait.

"Heal yourself. We're coming back to this as soon as I've taken care of those memories, and I don't want any of that iron getting in my way." Her smile grows just thinking about it. "I am not done with you yet."

He lets out the most pathetic little whine she's ever heard, and she can't help but laugh giddily as she dismisses him.

major 4.2 spoilers!

The rule of three is widely used in Genshin, to the extent that the Narzissenkreuz acknowledge it to be an ancient principle. Childe was trapped in the Abyss for three months, or three days. The enneagram shown in every domain combines the Law of Three and the Law of Seven. There were three descenders until the traveler arrived, breaking the cycle. To an extent, some boss battles and archon quests come in three acts.

The bible also uses the rule of three - the three patriarchs, the three kings, then later the three wise men. Jesus is denied three times and asks Peter if he loves him three times. The Holy Trinity. Omne Trium Perfectum.

Childe IS the rule of three. He has three names, three forms, three powers and most recently, he spends three patches tracking and promptly brawling with the all-devouring narwhal, which uses three elemental types. During phase two of the boss battle, the narwhal eats the player and a shadow knight, similar to Childe's Foul Legacy form, appears to fight the traveller. The boss drop "lightless silk string" is shaped like the Ichthus, a symbol that represents Jesus Christ.

In Jonah and the whale, Jonah disobeys God before his boat is caught in a storm. He is thrown overboard in repentance, assuming he is being punished for his actions but is swallowed by a whale. Inside the whale, Jonah laments that he has been "banished from gods sight" after disobeying and abandoning his God. He is offered a second chance, which he uses to bring salvation to the ninevites, who repent and avoid divine wrath.

According to The Knave, Childe said he was travelling to fontaine on vacation. This is directly following the erasure of Scaramouche from Irminsul. After bumping into the traveller, he acknowledges his strange mood and abandons his vision. This hides him from celestia, subverting the prophecy. He follows the call of the abyss which leads him to reunite with the all-devouring narwhal, taking the opportunity to fight with it... which ultimately, leads to Fontaine's survival.

I once ventured deep into the abyss and came face-to-face with an enormous beast. I don't know its name, all I know is the sight of it chilled me to the bone. But mark my words, one day I will march back in there and behead that beast, and you, comrade, will be my witness!

(don't forget, visions are likely celestias eyes. their original name in CN and other languages literally translates to Eye of God.)

Revelations mentions two divinely appointed "witnesses" [revelation 11:3-12] who are initially seen as heroes, before being turned on, shunned by the public and sacrificed. you could argue that the abyss sibling has already ventured this path, being friends with the gods before siding with the abyss during the cataclysm (apocalypse).

While attempting to convince furina to tell the truth, the traveler refers to themself as a Witness. as an outworlder, they are immune to irminsul and thus able to remember both Rukkhadevata and Scaramouche. It is implied that the abyss is also unaffected by celestia.

The abyss sibling asks the traveller to witness the story, hinting at the time loop and inevitability of Celestias will. Zhongli acknowledges this in his second story quest and asks the traveller to remember what Teyvat forgets.

Hello, I'm once again asking you about your OCs because I'm curious! I hope that's okay? Who are Iphi and Jack? I love the first one's name. And if I remember right Jack is aro? That's neat, I haven't really seen a lot of aro characters before! /pos

Thank you for the ask!!! Sorry this is pretty late btw, I haven’t had time to answer it lol

(That’s Iphi on the left, Jack on the right. First is a picrew, second isn’t my art but like. I haven’t drawn Jack yet so that’s kinda their ref for now)

But it is rant time!! Imma start with Iphi! Because I kinda need to explain her to give context for Jack’s lore. 

So Iphi is the god of sacrifice in this little fantasy world I made, Kunyang! She’s a pretty old god, a couple of thousand years old, but she’s still the second youngest one lol.

In Kunyang, gods are born when they sprout from the seeds of the god tree. The god tree is in the divine realm, which is a different realm entirely from the physical realm, but very rarely, a god seed can arrive in the physical realm.

Anyways, this seed fell into the hands of a very magically powerful person. They had magic potential that could honestly rival a god- and yeah, they believed they were destined for great things because of it. So, they were determined to be the person who caused the god seed to sprout.

So in Kunyang, there was once this library called the Archives, run by the god of knowledge himself, Ephius. This person went to Ephius, and they were told that the seed was for the god of sacrifice. Ephius told the person that to sprout a god seed, they’d need sacrifices from thousands of people. This person wanted to do it, all by themself.

And so, they sacrificed everything. Family, friends, fortune, and fame. All gone, in the hopes of making a legacy. The seed did not sprout, because it wasn’t enough. So this person decided that they would need to make a very big sacrifice, one big enough to make the seed sprout.

They decided to banish the Archives from the physical realm into the divine realm, sacrificing humanity’s access to the library of all knowledge. And that was indeed a big enough sacrifice to give birth to a new god!

And that’s how Iphi was created. But the thing is- that’s really not how you’re supposed to create a god. So she was kind of corrupted from birth. This corruption prevented her from having a lot of character traits that one might consider important to being human.

Iphi does not feel happiness, or satisfaction. No sorrow or regret. Nothing of that sort. But she is working towards a goal: and that is creating a legacy. Having an effect on the world. (Her only contributor to her creation imprinted heavily on her.)

And because of that, she is very active in all manners of sacrifice. Every day, she’s constantly getting people to make sacrifices to her, amassing followers in many different lands. This also increases her powers heavily.

The way her powers work, they’re kinda like payment based. She gets someone to sacrifice something for her, and she can create something else of equal value to that something. (The more important that something was to the person who sacrificed it, the more she can create and do.) Like, she could make a giant wall of fire, or acid rain, or bury a country in gold if she had enough magic. Which she absolutely does. But she mostly saves the magic potential she receives for later.

And also, Iphi doesn’t truly care about anything other than making a mark on the world. She doesn’t mind if people die or suffer because her sacrifices took something too important- if anything, she wants to do that, because it’s quite a way of making your mark on the world.

Oh, and I gotta add- she can’t do this all without a little help! And that’s where Jack comes in.

They’re also a couple thousand years old, but quite younger than Iphi. So they used to be a court jester. Mortal and everything. They should have had a life of a normal length, be just another person in the world, but then they fell in love with Iphi.

And yeah they’re aromantic! It’s not romantic love, it’s alterous love. But yeah they felt a deep emotional attraction, and they wanted to be in a relationship (not a romantic or platonic one though). Anyways, Iphi doesn’t feel the same way. She doesn’t love Jack. But she thought it was convenient to have someone in love with her, and to keep them around, so she offered Jack a sacrifice.

She’d give them eternity, and they would be her servant.

Jack honestly didn’t want to do that at first, but then they had a near-death experience, and agreed to her terms.

So Iphi took their physical body, and also their independence.

Because it would be inconvenient if her servant got bored or wanted to take back the sacrifice. So Jack quite literally cannot think unless she wills it. They’re barely conscious until Iphi needs them, and only then can they think again.

Jack isn’t even aware this happens. To them, it feels like they just woke up, or they just simply forgot what happened during that time

Iphi also messed with Jack’s mind a bit, to amplify their devotion. And yeah, Jack is completely, utterly devoted to her. They would die for her, they’d be tortured for her, they would kill for her too. Nothing is off the table. They’d do anything she says. And they truly love her.

Jack mostly stays in the divine realm, usually, until Iphi sends them to the physical realm to do something for her. That something is usually extorting people to get more sacrifices. Jack pretty much curses people, and then offers to remove that curse in exchange for a sacrifice. (That’s how Janessa got cursed, actually [have I talked about her?] but Jack forgot they cursed her lmao.)

I sit on my throne, awaiting the arrival of the so-called hero into my chamber. All is silent in the chamber, empty save for me, and the low flickering of the flames that provide illumination. Then, all of a sudden, the ‘hero’ breaks down the door, and steps in, glaring at me.

“Vasilia! For too long has your unholy conquest gone unchecked! I am here to stop you, to avenge the lives of the countless people you have slaughtered!”

At this, I let out a small laugh, before my face almost shows a sign of grief, which puzzles the hero. “I wouldn't say countless, that does them such a grave disservice. No, I have killed exactly 769 souls to get to where I am today.”

“Y-you… 769.. You counted them?”

“Yes, I counted them. It grieves me every single waking hour the weight of my necessary evil, but I know I must never forget them, lest I become a monster. I have every single one of their names etched into the gold of my throne, an ever present reminder of the lives that have been lost because of me.” I step off of my throne, my cloak billowing behind me, and I turn towards the throne, and the words etched onto it. 

“Isaac Welson. He was a wheat farmer by trade, but he longed to be an artist. He was recruited into this rebellion of yours, and sacrificed himself for a hope of a different future, never able to create the art he dreamed of. Elanor Fallow. She was a sailor, and loved the open sea. She died tragically, not trusting the instructions of how to flee the city to safer ground before my siege, the start of my war to unify these lands. she was one of the first to fall, far away from the sea that she loved.” My face grows sad, grief overtaking me. “I mourn each and every life that I had to take, and it hurts my heart every single day to know of them. Now I must ask you, you who calls yourself a hero, how many people have you murdered?”

“I- I don't know…” the self-styled hero admits, in a low, shallow whisper.

I give a short sigh before I speak. This was what I had expected, but it still hurts. “2,036. That is how many lives you have killed in furtherance of your rebellion. Two-Thousand and Thirty Six lives cut short, and you didn’t even know their names.”

The one who calls themself a hero staggers, grief overtaking their face. “I- that- no, h-how would you know?”

“Because, ‘hero’. I counted them as well, as yet another reminder to bear on my soul. 1,047 people died when you destroyed the great convoy of ships in the Eastern Riverway. It was true that the convoy had information critical to my unification, but you were mistaken when you believed all of the ships belonged to me. Only one did, the rest were innocent traders, each with their own lives and longings. I mourned each and every one of their lives for weeks, and you never even thought about them.”

“I-” The professed hero could not bear to speak, only now realising the weight of the actions that brought them here.

I look at the hero, and continue. “Five-hundred and sixty-three. That is how many people you killed during the breach of the grand vault of the Southern Capitol. A necessary heist to fund your rebellion, but if you believed exploding the end of the vault rather than storming it saved lives, you are gravely mistaken. Five-hundred and sixty-three people were in the vault, withdrawing money for the day’s shopping, or depositing their payment from yesterday’s work. All of them died. Isabelle Wilson was one of these, a child, only just turned 11. Her mothers had brought her to the vault to teach her how money works, the first time she had ever been to the grand building. And still, you didn’t even know her name, or any of the others you killed that day.”

Tears begin to streak the hero’s face, but I continue.

“Four-hundred and twelve. That is how many people died in the battles that lead you to my gates. Only half of them were soldiers of mine. The remaining two-hundred and 6 were innocent civilians, innocent civilians like Jett Lowen. They were 17, and were set to turn 18 the next day. They went to sleep at the end of the night, along with their parents, Filicia & Owen, and their younger sister, Amelia. They all went to sleep, resting after a long day of work. They never heard the soldiers of your rebellion surround the city, nor did they hear the launching of the bombs, nor the explosion that killed them in their sleep, the day before Jett would have become an adult.”

A small tear streaks across my face, before I once again continue. “You killed fourteen more people today, storming this castle. They were my most loyal guards, my trusted friends, who were planning on having a party tomorrow, a day of revel and joy. They defended my castle to their dying breaths, as you took their lives from them.”

The hero is aghast at their actions, the thousands of deaths unknown to them before now suddenly all at once weighing on their soul, tears streaking their face. I take a breath, and walk towards them, my soul filled with grief. “Yes, I have killed hundreds, and their deaths weigh on me every single day. Yet you killed thousands in an attempt to bring me down, and never even knew a single one’s name. I do hope they will be forgiving, if you do see them soon.”  I take out the sword that had been concealed in my cloak, and stab it into the hero. Their eyes, and the words engraved on the sword, stare back at me. The eyes of the hero show nothing but grief, shock, and horror, and they go deep into my soul along with the words written on the sword. Remember & Mourn, for they had a life, with wonderful joys. I grab the tools next to the throne, and carve their name into the throne, with tears streaking down my face. 770 lives taken.

“How many people have died to achieve this world domination of yours?” “769.” “…What?” “769 people died to achieve my plans. I counted them, and had each of their names etched on my throne so I never forget what my victory cost the world. Now tell me, how many have you killed to see me dead?”

"Catching Fire", Chapter 19

Part 3: The Enemy

Chapter 19: Let the 75th Hunger Games Begin! Katniss swims to the Cornucopia and gets there first, but is joined by Finnick who has Haymitch's Effie!bangle and says they are allies. They retrieve Peeta and Mags before heading into the jungle as what I consider to be an adorable foursome. Katniss, however, is uneasy with this alliance. Particularly the Finnick part of it. But then Peeta hits a forcefield with his knife, and his heart stops.

Thoughts:

-- At this moment, many of the tributes are going in here with the intention of sacrificing themself, not of surviving. Yet six people will survive these Games, topping last year's record of two which is somewhat good. But I can't help thinking that more should be able to make it since these games only go for three days (spoilers?). We know now that the 10th Games lasted five days. Before that they were over quickly but it's most likely this last Hunger Games was both the shortest of the Snow era, and the last.

-- I have seen people wondering why District 1, 2, 5, 9 and 10 (particularly 1 since Cashmere is mentioned as being trafficked as Finnick was) were not included in the Alliance. Honestly I think that having 12 victors (3,4,6,7,8 and 11) with "varying" knowledge of the plan is already a lot of people and I'm surprised a Totalitarian Dictatorship didn't catch on. At the very least, that's a lot of conversations that could've been overheard. I also wonder, in the particular case of D1, if the fact that they were siblings meant either would've happily reported on the Rebels to save their sibling.

Heroes of the Rebellion! The following Victors were known to be part of the rebel alliance: Unnamed District 6 male Tribute (Morphling), Woof, Cecelia, and Seeder. (please play respectuful music for them in your own head.)

Quotes:

I can't think straight. The image of Cinna, beaten and bloody, consumes me. Where is he now? What are they doing to him? Torturing him? Killing him? Turning him into an Avox? Obviously his assault was staged to unhinge me, the same way Darius's presence in my quarters was. And it has unhinged me. All I want to do is collapse on my metal plate. But I can hardly do that after what I just witnessed. I must be strong. I owe it to Cinna, who risked everything by undermining President Snow and turning my bridal silk into mockingjay plumage. And I owe it to the rebels who, emboldened by Cinna's example, might be fighting to bring down the Capitol at this moment.

I think it's worth noting how Snow uses all the people, including Darius and Cinna, as pawns in the Game. (The whole world is an arena, afterall.) Both of these men will die off the page, with few short lines given to their ends. Darius will again be used as a pawn in an attempt to unhinge Peeta. While Cinna is said to have died while being tortured because he refused to give answers to his captors.

Someone asked me "what did Cinna give to the rebellion?" when I was mad about Gale not wanting Cinna's gloves. That kind of unhinged me, if you haven't noticed by my harping on him. He gave his life, obviously. And his talents. And while his early life was probably much easier than any district kid, I don't think that it's fair to say he had a platform because of the Capitol. He had a platform because of his abilities. It doesn't seem like all Capitol citizens get to be on TV. He had more access, I concede. I don't think that makes his sacrifice lesser though.

Anyway did you guys know Francis Lawrence considered having Lenny Kravitz being executed in the montage of executions in Mockingjay Part 1? ("The concept for the scene was that President Snow's speech would have been delivered during a series of grim executions that were broadcast live, with Cinna's execution being carried out last along with a specific message to Katniss." here)

i think it is a mistake to see mark immortell as an authorial voice. at most he is only representing a narrow aspect, the sadist-kibitzer-designer slice of personality that wants you to play a particular way and is offended when you do not. fuck that mark.

(personally i dont see mark in that light, but rather as a personified device, ostensibly trying to nudge the player into or against certain approaches to play, but presented as such an asshole so as to subtly encourage the player to rebel against him, and to be more wilful, more intentional about how they themself are choosing to play. at least if youre the introspective sort; otherwise you just flip him off and play the way you want regardless.)

so the deal ending then. youve messed up marks play/experiment/whatever and he is upset. but as we have established, fuck mark.

the deal ending is quite literally a deal with Death, and ends, as all such deals do in mythology, in the death of the one entering into it. burakh agrees to have the sting of deaths along the way removed, and in exchange he dies at the stroke of midnight on day 11, and so doesnt get to see “the ending”. because he is dead.

but—and i think this is a really important thing that is lost by the ideas of “the true ending” and “seeing all the endings” and the popular conception that choices without mechanical or content-varying outcomes are meaningless—the *town* does not die with burakh. everything that he managed to do, every life he managed to save in those eleven days remains and continues living. because burakh was just one of the many living things in the udurgh.

in my first playthrough, i thought i was “doing well”, because i had died only twice as day 9 drew to a close. and then i went to the abattoir.

just like mustachioed artemy burakh, i sucked at fighting. (and also it took me several attempts before i realised that fighting was what was being asked of me in there.) i died so many times in that subterranean golgotha. i was struggling, and seeing with panic my health bar depleting and making it even harder for me (or so i thought). so when the fellow traveller offered me the deal, i took it. “not for myself,” i lied to him and me, “but for the people i am trying to save.” but even with the deal sealed, i think i had reached thirteen deaths before i made it through.

as the polyhedron fell, and i drew the blood, and found myself suddenly in the theatre once more. “you cheated not only the game, but yourself,” said mark mockingly, more or less. “you didnt grow. you didnt improve. you took a shortcut and gained nothing.”

but fuck mark: because he was wrong. and the lie i had told to myself and the fellow traveller? that had become truth. i got through the abattoir because the deal took away my fear of failing. i made the panacea and ensured that all the children on my list survived. and then i killed the polyhedron so the people could live. and then i died, too—an artemy burakh who sacrificed his life for the town. just as nara had; just as rubin had; just as the two odonghs who broke the taboo to bring me much-needed ingredients had. artemy burakh, a fingernail, a fleck of skin died and was cast off so the town and kin would grow.

deal ending may be presented out-of-tone as a failure to play the way the writers intended and thereby as the player's shame but it offers you one thing you can't find anywhere else in patho2. COMFORT. consolation... certainty and explanation, even. making peace with death (the person) by way of making peace with death (the mechanic) gives the haruspex a relationship with a "real" figure in the meta-theatre who will guide him beyond the confines of what exists in the game. where patho2 is a game consisting of a struggle against death, changing that relationship naturally enables you to look beyond the scenarios that gameplay presents. Which is, of course, a poignant way of approaching the concept of actual death that's most appropriate for the haruspex's character. Would be great if this were treated as the valid and resonant choice it is by the game

felix route chapter 10-13 angsty MC headcanons (major spoilers)

in chapter 11 and 12, we get to see how mc reacts to felix's death, but i wanted to make it even sadder so i'm expanding slightly on the canon mc events and adding my bonus angsty ideas,, it's strange, i've never been a big fan of angst but last legacy makes me want to make everything angstier, maybe there's a little felix devil whispering in my ear about the beauty of tragic romances ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ what can i do

hopefully i've successfully made the headcanons general enough for most people to relate to somewhat. i just had many thoughts about how one might reasonably react to felix's death, but yeah just heads up my ideas might completely differ from yours. (not sure how to specify, general tw for mc's intense emotional reactions) (a little bit of rime interaction, not meant to be romantic but that's up to you) (gender-neutral mc)

right so first things first, canon briefly mentioned mc having recurring nightmares about failing to save felix so:

the first night after felix's resurrection, mc wakes up in the dead of night in cold sweat. they frantically scramble off their bed and run to felix's room to check if he's still there, if he's alive, so they open the door and stumble inside to check his pulse—

and he is very much alive. mc is so relieved they fall to their knees right next to felix's bed. their breathing is shaky, they can't help but shed a few silent tears, and their hands tremble as they clutch onto the blankets.

in the morning, felix wakes up and finds them still kneeling on the floor with their head resting on the edge of his mattress and their hand on his arm, because mc could not fall asleep without making sure felix was still within their reach and not going anywhere.

this repeats for a couple more nights with mc trying their best to reassure felix that they're okay, they'll be alright on their own, until felix just pleads with them to share the bed in his room because he can't bear to see mc spend another night on the cold, hard floor

even when mc starts sleeping right next to felix the nightmares don't go away immediately, they still find themself staring at felix in the dark, having to tell themself over and over that he's still there, it's okay, everything's fine, before letting exhaustion take over them and going back to sleep

they don't tell felix about any of that though.

this is my favourite (and most painful in my opinion) headcanon by far: when mc isn't doing research with felix, they secretly grow obsessed with learning defense spells, protection spells, shield spells, anything that could possibly help them prevent felix from dying in front of them like that ever again. they sneak away whenever they can to practice, sometimes late at night, sometimes to the point of wearing themself out completely.

remember that one time in chapter 3 when felix overused his magic and there were bruises and darkened veins all over his forearm? this happens to mc once or twice, they hide it under long sleeves, gritting their teeth when they have to mask the pain,, yes.

even though rime killed felix and mc to help them in chapter 13, i think mc having to watch someone kill felix right in front of them and being unable to prevent it a second time only makes this obsession worse later on

in chapter 12, we learn that mc spends quite a lot of time just helping and taking care of felix. obviously it's completely understandable because felix needs the support, but i think mc does it tirelessly and without complaint because the guilt from felix sacrificing himself for them eats away at them and causes them to overcompensate because they don't know if they could ever repay him for something like that

long-term effects? oh yeah. it's worse in the early days, but even long after the incident, mc occasionally can't help but treat felix like glass. they find it difficult to inconvenience him in any way. often they hold themself back from being honest about their struggles because hasn't felix been through enough in his life? how could they possibly pile their burdens on top of his?

don't worry, i'm sure felix finds ways to persuade mc to confide in him when necessary. they probably work things out in the future. just wanted to point out how felix's death can go as far as affecting mc and felix's relationship in the long run, no relationship is perfect all the way

okay this brings me to my next headcanon: mc confiding in rime about felix's death because they can't do that with felix himself. i just think rime is probably the only other person who understands the level of distress mc experienced because he too, loves (loved?) felix.

canonically you only have that one conversation with rime in chapter 12, but man if rime could have spoken with mc another time,,

perhaps rime finds mc sitting alone with their head in their hands on the bench in the gardens. perhaps he scoffs at them with that standoffish attitude of his. perhaps he hesitates when they actually look up to face him with weariness in their eyes. perhaps rime actually takes the time to listen to mc because who is he to dismiss their grief when it's regarding someone they both care about.

man i'll probably write a whole one-shot on just this scenario okay okay okay phew

rambling:

these points are just me rambling about canon events, so stick to the headcanons above if that's all you want

god i loved the way canon mc could not let go of felix's body or tear their eyes away from him as they cried, the way they were struggling to speak and faltering when they asked rime for help, that really helped show how badly his death affected them

'Rime's eyes flash with rage, and distantly I realize that I should be afraid. But all I feel is worn out.' -MC in chapter 11 showing that they're so overcome with grief they can't even muster the energy to feel anything else, just that bit of writing is incredible

here's the thing: sure, mc had been in Astraea for quite some time at that point, but they lived their whole life on Earth before that.

so even though mc knew full well that necromancy existed and they did bring it up to rime when asking for his help, i firmly believe that at the moment of felix's death, mc truly thought he was gone. i mean on Earth, once you die, that's it. it's over. pretty sure that idea of death is more instinctually ingrained in mc compared to the possibilities of necromancy

even when mc came to their senses and asked rime for help, they must have felt really desperate. so far they've only seen felix revive someone completely from death and it took him five years, so there was no reason for mc to know that necromancy would be an easy solution (i was genuinely surprised to see rime's very quick attempt was supposed to work if not for whatever was interrupting his spell. maybe necromancy requires less preparation if you act immediately after death or rime's necromancy is more advanced cos he literally learned it in actual hell who knows)

basically even though mc was strong enough to do more than just stare at felix's body in horror man their inner turmoil must have been torturous, and you do see their show of bravery crack a couple of times in the void with felix, like when they first see him and their outburst of 'that doesn't mean you can just throw your life away!' when felix casually talks about having died before

[GM] What does this mean for Prophet Sammy's sacrificeability rating on Henry, though? Now he's potentially long-term useful... [Sammy] I mean... [Jack] The Prophet isn't here so he doesn't need to know about this! [Sammy] ...I feel like, if something has greater value, then it's an even more impressive sacrifice. That's why you sacrifice an unblemished sheep, traditionally. Well, here is the post clarifying my thought process for the next few cards and the characters I'm unsure on. (Hope you'll enjoy it and that you may can help me with the decisions.)

Here are the remaining cards I still need to do (four of the cards I've already decided on a character/event with 99% certainty, regarding the rest I'm quite torn on which character/event/object I want to depict):

• The Magician (Card 1)

• The Hermit (Card 9)

• Justice (Card 11)

• The Hanged Man (Card 12)

• Death (Card 13) -> The Titan (probably)

• The Devil (Card 15)

• The Star (Card 17)

• The Moon (Card 18) -> Amity Blight

• The Sun (Card 19) -> Luz Noceda (I am waiting for the reveal of her palisman)

• Judgement (Card 20) -> The Day of Unity (probably)

• The World (Card 21)

[Note: Firstly, I'm not an expert in Tarot, so not everything will be 100% correct (especially due to the fact that Tarot is highly symbolic). Secondly, I'm using the Rider Waite deck, so the characters I chose are mostly fitting the description of that deck.]

Now, let's get to the potential candidates and my reasoning behind them.

Card 1 — The Magician

Keywords of "The Magician":

• UPRIGHT: Manifestation, resourcefulness, power, inspired action, willpower, desire, creation, skill, ability, concentration

• REVERSED: Manipulation, poor planning, untapped talents, wasted talent, cunning, trickery, illusions, deception, out of touch

First of all, I need to explain some symbolism regarding this card. In this card the four suits of tarot are shown (wands, pentacles, cups, sword). Each one stands for one of the classical four elements (wands = fire , pentacles = earth, cups = water, sword = air) and represents how the Magician is a master of the elements ("he has all the tools (and elements) he needs to manifest his intentions into being"). This of course would translate to (elemental) glyph magic and a master of glyphs.

Candidates for "The Magician":

• Luz Noceda — Luz wants to be a witch aka a magic user. She rediscovered glyph magic and is very skilled in using glyph magic. Also, a snake is usally depicted in this card (which might be Luz's palisman).

• Eda Clawthorne — Eda is (or at least was) one of the most powerful magic users on the Boiling Isles. She was a master of all kinds of magic and currently learns glyph magic. Eda can also be deceptive and manipulative. Her plans aren't always the best, but she's still very cunning and skilled.

• Augustus "Gus" Porter — Despite his young age, Gus is a very skilled witch (especially or rather mainly in illusion magic). In "Through the Looking-Glass Ruins" he felt down and how he felt like he was useless and wasted his talent. Also in this episode, Gus started to use glyph magic which he could still used later down the line.

• Hunter — Hunter is a very skilled person, both physically and in regards to his magical abilities. He also can be manipulative and deceptive (as shown in his appearances so far). He is also interested in wild magic and knows about 'elemental magic used in the Savage Ages'. Not to mention the potential of him learning glyph magic.

• Philip Wittebane — Mostly for his potential as a character and the fact given that he must have learned some sort of magic (probably glyph magic) during his life on the Boiling Isles.

Card 9 — The Hermit

Keywords of "The Hermit":

• UPRIGHT: Self-reflection, introspection, contemplation, withdrawal, solitude, search for self, search for truth, inner guidance, being alone

• REVERSED: Loneliness, isolation, withdrawal, recluse, being anti-social, rejection, lost your way, returning to society

Candidates for "The Hermit":

• Eda Clawthorne — Eda lived a long period of her life in solitude and isolation. She had to do a lot of introspection in order to get where she is now. This card also sometimes represents a mentor figure and is sometimes considered the mature and wiser version of "The Magician".

• Hunter — Hunter is quite a lonely character that needs to do a lot of introspection. Also, he has potential to fit this card quite well.

• Philip Wittebane — Mostly for his potential as a character.

• "King's Father" — He seems to travel alone in a chariot, so the descriptive term 'hermit' does seem to fit. This card often depicts a star which fits the astronomical symbolism found in King's orginal home. There is also a lot of potential for him as a character. (We really don't know much about this guy, so he's kinda a wild card.)

Card 11 — Justice

Keywords of "Justice":

• UPRIGHT: Justice, fairness, truth, cause and effect, law, clarity, karma, consequence, honesty, integrity

• REVERSED: Unfairness, lack of accountability, unaccountability, dishonesty, injustice, retribution, corruption

Candidates for "Justice":

• Augustus "Gus" Porter — Gus is a very juste and morally good character as we see in "Through the Looking-Glass Ruins". He has a very explicit moral compass in that episode, though he isn't flawless in that regard as shown in "Something Ventured, Someone Framed".

• Warden Wrath — He works as an enforcer for the Emperor's Coven.

• The Coven Heads — Mostly for their potential as a characters.

• The Emperor's Coven — They are basically the police system of the Boiling Isles, just extremely corrupt and founded/controlled by Emperor Belos.

• "Statue of Hekate" (S1E19)

Card 12 — The Hanged Man

Keywords of "The Hanged Man":

• UPRIGHT: Pause, surrender, letting go, new perspectives, sacrifice, release, martyrdom, waiting, uncertainty, lack of direction, contemplation

• REVERSED: Delays, resistance, stalling, indecision, needless sacrifice, fear of sacrifice, avoiding sacrifice, disinterest, stagnation, standstill, apathy

Candidates for "The Hanged Man":

• Augustus "Gus" Porter — Gus did sacrifice quite a bit during his episodes like "Something Ventured, Someone Framed" and "Through the Looking-Glass Ruins". In the latter episode, he expressed the desire to learn new kinds of magic.

• Raine Whispers — Raine sacrificed themself for Eda in "Eda's Requiem" and created the BATS, a resistance movement against the Emperor. So, they fit quite well.

• King — Mostly for his potential as a character.

• Hunter — Mostly for his potential as a character (e.g. Titan Sacrifice Theory).

• The Bat Queen — Mostly for her potential as a character.

• "King's Father" — Mostly for his potential as a character.

Card 15 — The Devil

Keywords of "The Devil":

• UPRIGHT: Shadow self, attachment, oppression, addiction, obsession, dependency, excess, powerlessness, limitations, restriction, sexuality

• REVERSED: Independence, freedom, revelation, release, releasing limiting beliefs, reclaiming power, reclaiming control, exploring dark thoughts, detachment

For people who do not have much knowledge of tarot and this card, I should explain something. This card does NOT stand for a literal devil or an evil person. The most common and basic description for the card is about an unhealthy bond with someone or something that's (usually) not for the greater good like an addiction, an obession or a toxic relationship. This card also symbolizes instant gratification, even if it is at the expense of your long-term well-being.

Candidates for "The Devil":

• Hunter — Hunter has clearly a very unhealthy bond with Emperor Belos. This is especially shown in "Eclipse Lake" and how badly the relationship to Belos affects him (Hunter literally dug his own grave due to the negative influence Belos had on his sense of worth). Also, both the upright and reversed keywords of this card do fit him quite well. He is a powerless witch that works for the restrictive and opressive Emperor's Coven and is dependent on Emperor Belos in regards to his own self-worth. And we know from "Hunting Palismen" that Hunter wishes some personal freedom and independence for himself (especially regarding his future). There is also the potential of Hunter's possible redemption arc in S2B and his breakaway from Belos.

• Emperor Belos — Emperor Belos is a dictator that causes a lot of opression and limitations on the Boiling Isles. His relationships with characters like Lilith, Kikimora and Hunter and his treatment towards them is quite unhealthy and even abusive. He himself is also very dependent on the essence found within palismen for his well-being. (So, most of the upright keywords fit him quite well.)

• Alador & Odalia Blight — Like Emperor Belos, Amity's parents are quite unhealthy people to be around (especially Odalia). This was shown in regards to their treatment of Amity. They also seem to be quite materialistic which this card can symbolize.

• The Titan — Mostly for his potential as a character and his design.

• "King's Father" — Mostly for his potential as a character and his design (a horned demon with wings).

Card 17 — The Star

Keywords of "The Star":

• UPRIGHT: Hope, faith, purpose, renewal, spirituality, rejuvenation, inspiration, positivity, healing

• REVERSED: Lack of faith, faithlessness, discouragement, despair, hopelessness, self-trust, disconnection, insecurity, negativity, despondent

Candidates for "The Star":

• King — King is quite interesting character. We know his hopes in regards of meeting his father. He also felt a lot despair and distress due to absence of his father. In his original home, there is also a lot of astronomical symbolism like stars.

• Augustus "Gus" Porter — Gus is a very positive character. And he has insecurities and he felt discouraged in "Through the Looking-Glass Ruins".

• Hunter — In "Eclipse Lake" Hunter is shown in his most despaired state so far, as well as his mindset in regards to one's purpose. He has also a lot of potential as a character.

Card 21 — The World

Keywords of "The World":

• UPRIGHT: Completion, fulfilment, wholeness, integration, achievement, accomplishment, travel, sense of belonging, harmony

• REVERSED: Incompletion, feeling incomplete, seeking personal closure, lack of closure, lack of achievement, short-cuts, delays, emptiness

Candidates for "The World":

• The Boiling Isles — The main setting of the series.

• The Titan — The Titan makes up the Boiling Isles which is the main setting of the series.

• The Bat Queen — Mostly for her potential as a character and her design.

• "The Collector" — Mostly for her potential as a character and her design.
