One Dress a Day Challenge
August: Fantasy & Sci-Fi
Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves / David Durham as Ethereal Plane Sorcerer
This character only appears in Simon's visions when he is attempting to attune to the Helm of Disjunction; Simon identifies him with one of his ancestors, but it eventually becomes clear that the figure isn't exactly that...
Most of the characters in the movie either are ragtag adventurers or don't have much fashion sense (*cough*ForgeFitzwilliam*cough*), so this costume stands out as marking a character of both wealth and taste. His robe and cloak are clearly quite expensive, with gold trim and multiple different weave textures and patterns in the cloth, but they harmonize into a unified look without becoming too visually busy or tacky. The sorcerer's hat is based on a medieval European style known as a chaperon.

David Cronenberg’s Rabid (1977)

“Along with the City of Durham, we have made major investments in the Carolina Theatre for the comfort and safety of our guests during our closure,” says Randy McKay, the Carolina Theatre’s President & CEO. “That includes tens of thousands of dollars in new state of the art HVAC upgrades from Global Plasma Solutions (GPS) that remove biohazards, pollen, and other contaminants to make our air as pure — and sometimes purer — than outdoor air.”  The theater has also earned a Global Biorisk Advisory Council® (GBAC) STAR™ accreditation for its cleaning practices to ensure that guests have a safe and enjoyable experience.  “Together, these cleaning practices and advanced air filtration make the Carolina Theatre one of the safest spaces to attend a film or live event in the region,” says McKay.  [source]

17th October
St Luke’s Eve
Tumblr media
Battle of Neville’s Cross. Source: britishbattles.com
Today is St Luke’s Eve. It was also the date in 1346 that King David II of Scotland, the son of Robert the Bruce, was catastrophically defeated by King Edward III at Neville’s Cross, County Durham. The battle not only brought to an end the Scottish invasion of England, but the defeat was so comprehensive, with King David captured, that Scotland effectively withdrew from foreign ventures for several years. During the battle, the monks of Durham Abbey sang Mass and rang the monastery’s bells. After the English victory, the Abbot promised to repeat Mass and bell-ringing every 17th October from then on, which duly took place. The Mass was replaced with an Anglican service after the Reformation and both service and chimes disappeared during the English Commonwealth. In 1660 the celebration returned but transferred to 29th May, the date of Charles II’s Restoration, which rather defeated the object.
If you sleep tonight with with a sprig of rosemary and a crooked sixpence (if you can find one!) under your pillow tonight, you will dream of your future love.
