More little Inktober study buddies, plus Dave. For actual YEARS I thought Dave’s eyes were brown, and when I finally realized, NO, THEY ARE NOT (!!), I was completely SCANDALIZED. It has been quite some time and I’ve still not recovered. 😵 Anyway, URGH, I love drawing this fella.

Chesney Henry "Chet" Baker Jr. (December 23, 1929 – May 13, 1988) was an American jazz trumpeter and vocalist. He is known for major innovations in cool jazz that led him to be nicknamed the "Prince of Cool".
Baker earned much attention and critical praise through the 1950s, particularly for albums featuring his vocals: Chet Baker Sings (1954) and It Could Happen to You (1958). Jazz historian Dave Gelly described the promise of Baker's early career as "James Dean, Sinatra, and Bix, rolled into one". His well-publicized drug habit also drove his notoriety and fame. Baker was in and out of jail frequently before enjoying a career resurgence in the late 1970s and 1980s.

Klaus Paier, Asja Valcic
Silk Road
ACT, 2013
Klaus Paier / accordion, bandoneon
Asja Valcic / cello
With most contemporary European offshoots of jazz it's impossible to tell where composition leaves off and improvisation begins. That's certainly the case with this duo of an Austrian accordionist and Croatian cellist. The instruments blend so elegantly, and the 11 pieces evolve with such vigour and clarity, that the music sounds like the product of one mind rather than two. If it reminds me of anything, it's the work of Astor Piazzolla, with its tangos and waltzes, especially when Paier switches from accordion to bandoneón – but really its charm is all its own.

March 15, 1959
Lester Young at the Newport Jazz Festival, 1958 (Ted Williams)
Lester Young died unexpectedly of a heart attack in the early hours of Sunday, March 15, 1959 in the Alvin Hotel on 52nd and Broadway where he had been living for the past year, just across from the Birdland jazz club. Young was just 49, and despite ongoing health problems, he was performing regularly — but he’d begun experiencing severe stomach pain in Paris after spending seven weeks abroad, and rushed back to New York where he died almost immediately upon his return.
Dave Gelly details Young’s final hours very thoroughly in his biography Being Prez: The Life and Music of Lester Young, if you’re looking to learn more. It was an event that shook the jazz world; according to critic Leonard Feather, at Young’s funeral, held the following Thursday, March 19, Young’s longtime friend and collaborator Billie Holiday told him, "I'll be the next one to go."
One of the most enduring elegies to Pres’ impact came from Charles Mingus, who was on the bandstand at the Half Note when he learned of Young’s passing. From John Handy, who was in Mingus’ band at that point, on writing the song that night:
We were working at the Half Note, and we were on the bandstand when we got the news that Lester Young had died. Well, you know, it was very sad news, and Mingus started to play a very slow, mournful blues in C minor…very slow…and he had me play first, and he just kept goading me to play longer and longer, and so I played a long time on it before anybody else did, so… I believe we took a break and, you know, we were just saddened and walked off for quite awhile.
Below are a number of obituaries that published in the days following Young’s death, which I believe really show just how big his impact was then and now. There were radio memorial broadcasts including on New York’s WQXR, and Pres & Teddy, recorded in 1956, was released almost immediately after his passing (it’s unclear if that had already been in the works, but the dates suggest that it must have been).

Chet Baker - Every Time We Said goodbye
Chesney Henry Baker Jr. (December 23, 1929 – May 13, 1988) was an American jazz trumpeter and vocalist.
Baker earned much attention and critical praise through the 1950s, particularly for albums featuring his vocals (Chet Baker Sings, It Could Happen to You). Jazz historian Dave Gelly described the promise of Baker's early career as "James Dean, Sinatra, and Bix, rolled into one." His well-publicized drug habit also drove his notoriety and fame. Baker was in and out of jail frequently before enjoying a career resurgence in the late 1970s and '80s. (WIkipedia)
Early on May 13, 1988, Baker was found dead on the street below his room in Hotel Prins Hendrik, Amsterdam, with serious wounds to his head, apparently having fallen from the second floor window.[18] Heroin and cocaine were found in his room and in his body. There was no evidence of a struggle, and the death was ruled an accident. According to another account he inadvertantly locked himself out of his room and fell while attempting to cross from the balcony of the vacant adjacent room to his own.https://www.kcrw.com/music/articles/how-chet-baker-really-died. There is a plaque outside the hotel to his memory.[19]
Baker is buried at the Inglewood Park Cemetery in Inglewood, California next to his father. (Wikipedia)

Army of the Dead (2021) Directed by Zack Snyder It's been some time since we had a major movie to look forward to, after "Zack Snyder's Justice League", it was "Army of the Dead", Snyder's return to the zombie genre after his first feature, "Dawn of the Dead" (2004) (the movies aren't related, "Army" is not a sequel). After Las Vegas is overrun by zombies, the city is walled off and quarantined, and the Government plans to nuke the entire place. Mercenary Scott Ward (Dave Bautista) is recruited to assemble a team and pull off a heist — 200 million dollars in a safe in one of the buildings inside Vegas. I loved the film! It was very entertaining, the action was well done and they did inventive things with the premise. The good amount of blood and gore in the movie was enjoyable, and I thought the characters got good enough development that one was kept engaged. The look of the film is unlike anything you would have seen before, Snyder is the DOP and he used 50mm f0.95 lenses shot wide open, for the majority of the film. Subjects get very much separated from the completely blurred off backgrounds. It took me some getting used to, the choice may not be for everyone but I personally liked it. The movie is in 16:9 aspect ratio and not the 2:1 or 2.39:1 that one might expect. The visual effects must get praise. Actor Tig Notaro was inserted seamlessly into the movie, she replaced another actor and all her footage was shot on green screen with Snyder directing her over Zoom. No movie is perfect of course, but for me, the positives here outweighed the flaws and I really liked it. When I was watching the movie, I got "Rick and Morty" vibes, especially the episode where Rick assembles a team (which itself is a parody of the trope). So I had this idea to draw Tig Notaro's character in the show's style. The drawing was done with ballpoint pen and Gelly Roll pen on Menorah A7 sketchbook. The photo with taken with a 50mm lens at f1.4 (I usually shoot at f2, but here, I kept it wide open — that's what she said). PIXEL SORTING (aka photo editing) is NOT a good idea. I’ve tried it (back in the day) and it was WORSE than anything that happened to DAVE STRIDER. I “chomped pixels” with some buddies in the Gelly Belly’s sever and woke up 3.141 days later in Skype, on a Linux OS. With no idea what happened. DON’T DO PYTHON.
