The villain staggers back. The hero follows with easy strides.

“What–what’re you—”

They only just reel back from another strike. “I’m everything you deserve, criminal.”

The hero’s voice is flat, plain. It’s like a robot’s spitting out words it doesn’t understand. Their push into the villain’s space is relentless, forever forcing them back in the vain hope of preventing another gash.

The side of the villain's jacket is painted red by now. They know that. The hero had caught them unawares, unexpecting, and the villain has learnt their lesson very well after that first slash.

They stumble over the edge of their coat slightly. The hero’s eyes flicker with opportunity as they fall into another attack.

The villain only just contains the whimper in their throat when the burn of metal slices against their skin. It should be expected by now, but the agony of such a simple, smooth action was never something they got used to.

“Who…” The word comes out as no more than a haggard breath. “Who are you?”

The hero smiles disingenuously. There’s no emotion behind it, positive or otherwise, like invisible strings are tugging the corners of their mouth into an unnatural curve. It’s slightly horrifying to witness. “I’m [Hero],” they say in that nothing voice. “You already know that, don’t you?”

“No the fuck you’re not,” the villain spits. Pain is blinding them to a lot of the common sense they’d usually have. “[Hero] was at least fucking humane. Tell me who you are.”

The smile disappears. It’s somehow worse without it now. “[Hero] was a pathetic, weak-willed excuse of a hero who couldn’t bear to kill the vermin ravaging the streets.” The hero tilts their head, almost curious, mostly mechanical. “Why, do you miss them?”

“I much preferred them to you, I’ll say that.” The villain heaves a deep breath. Keep breathing. Don’t let them have this over you. “Where the fuck are they? What did you do with them?”

“Disposed of.” The flatness of the words is almost an emotion in itself. “And I am in their place as an improvement.”

The villain barks a laugh that tears into their side. Their hands are red. They need to get the hell out of dodge before they get too obviously weak. “And you’re impersonating them.”

That unnatural smile makes a momentary appearance, like the faked kindness of someone three seconds from putting an axe through someone’s face. “[Hero] would be missed by the masses. We can catch you villains unawares if you think we’re harmless.” Their brow knits in question for a moment, humoured. “Did you really think I’m the only one they’ve replaced?”

The villain’s shivering. Or trembling. It’s hard to tell which. “How many of you are there?”

The hero takes a long step forward and the villain scrambles to stay out of reach. They’re too slow; the hero doesn’t have the wounds to hold them back. Their hand closes around the villain’s throat, breathlessly tight.

“Would you like to meet them?” The hero’s smile splits into an uneven grin. The villain can’t see it very well from behind the blurriness of their eyes. Thank god, honestly. “I’m sure they’d love you.”

The words the villain wants to say are stuck behind the hero’s grip. Their breath is almost non-existent. Their sides feel like someone’s shoving a red-hot poker into them. The hero says something but they can’t hear it. It’s faraway, distant, and all the villain can think is fucking hell, not now.

That’s the last thing that gets to cross their mind before they pass out in the hero’s grip, and it’s uncertain whether that’s a blessing or not.

What the fuck why did Gregory do that

OKAY YOU WANT AN ANSWER??? I'LL GIVE YOU A GOD DAMN ANSWER

MAJOR FNAF RUIN SPOILERS

Okay so first of all: Gregory is patient 46 which means he's been under the Mimics control before and he KNOWS how that fucker WORKS. He knows how it affects people. He knows how it tricks people. He knows how it hurts people. That is important context here.

Gregory is 12 years old and just escaped a very fucking scary situation. He just escaped the control of an animatronic that tricked him into murdering multiple people, INCLUDING one of his friends, and also tricked him into lying about his past and parents to the authorities and possibly even manipulating him into MURDERING HIS PARENTS. Gregory is fucking TRAUAMTIZED. That's a LOT for a kid to go through!!! That's a lot for ANYONE to go through!!!!! And that paired with the fact that he also escaped with someone else (Vanessa) who was ALSO under the Mimics control, and also that he and Vanessa are the most likely candidates for who created the M.X.E.S to seal the Mimic away, they probably thought that this whole nightmare was over and that the Mimic couldn't hurt them anymore, that they were finally safe after everything and could finally recover.

But then Gregory's friend gets tricked by it. She gets lured to the Pizzaplex, thinking that he's hurt, alone, and trapped. Gregory says, and there's a chance of hearing a voice line of him trying to get through the Cassie while she's there. He's trying his fucking BEST to get through to Cassie and get her out of there before it's too late, he's trying to save her before she ruins all of his work and puts everyone at risk again. He did his fucking best, but by the time she finally listened and he got through to her, in his eyes, it was too late. The M.X.E.S was shut down, and the Mimic was free.

I have the preface this next part with the fact I know damn well that Gregory could've not been the one to drop the elevator, that it's perfectly possible that Mimic did it and that I actually believe that alternative more. But if Gregory was the one to do it, I think, for the situation he was put in, it's understandable.

Gregory, having failed at saving his friend, knowing that the system he and his new family, the survivors of this things torment, put in place to keep it sealed away and prevent it from hurting anyone anymore, is now free again- knowing how the Mimic affects and infects peoples minds, how it tricks them, thinks she's too far gone. That she can't be saved. Or that if she was saved, it would be at the risk of the everyone else.

So, he drops her. He thinks he's spared her from the Mimics control, and also sealed the one way out Mimic had by destroying the elevator. And it's possible he did, we don't know how that ended exactly- but considering Roxy's line at the end calling out Cassie's name, it's possible she still survived anyway. It's possible his plan failed, it's possible she'll be infected, it's possible the Mimic will be free and that he was just too late.

But we don't know how this ends yet. We just have to wait and see

But either way- Gregory did what he thought he had to do to protect EVERYONE. He didn't want Mimic getting more victims, he didn't want his best friend being one of those victims, he couldn't have that thing be free again after trying so hard to trap it away and be done with it.

He did what he thought was necessary.

Also if anyone who doesn't know me finds this, CREATOR IS MY FRIEND!!! I'M NOT UPSET WITH HIM FOR ASKING THIS LMAO I JUST NEED TO PROTECT MY SON!!!!

Shang tsung doesn't need to be a "good guy" to be sympathetic or do nice or "good" deeds.

Y'all should understand that not everyone needs to be a hero to be redeemed.

That's some bullshit propaganda that y'all tend to fall for.

It's like that feeling of "if you pray to jesus,all you're sins in OUR eyes will be forgiven" type indoctrinated shit. Like no shade thrown,even as someone who is spiritual myself. I find people thinking that a villain in a story should become a hero in order to be redeemed,kinda suspicious.

Shang tsung,to me,has ALWAYS BEEN NUANCED. And already had benevolent qualities and traits. Y'all just only see one damn part of it because the writers suck at showing them properly.

Not to mention if a character isn't obnoxiously nice or mean,y'all don't pay attention to them.

It's like most of mk fans I've noticed,at least as of late. Feels like I'm talking to 3yr olds in media literacy.

So no. Shang tsung needs to be a NEUTRAL CHARACTER. not good,not evil,just self serving and even quite helpful as a tournament master as he is supposed to fucking be.

He is supposed to be that "keep your friends close,keep you enemies closer" type. He is the "the enemy of my enemies are my friends" type. He's scary intelligent,cunning,a master martial artist,a brilliant alchemist,and one badass mofo you do not wanna cross.

But most of all,he is courteous,a gracious host on his island,and his punishments are as great as his rewards. He does keep his end of the bargain,but he also gets compensation.

If anything you need to worry about earthrealms warriors more than him. Half of them now(due to piss poor writing) are hiding behind heroic deeds and false statements of peace yet they have unclean hands too.

With Shang tsung you know what you are dealing with,it's on the table. If you cant read the obvious,you are indeed a foolish one.

No matter what iteration of shang tsung you have. One thing is clear,made clear,and that is when you deal with him. You deal with the devil so to speak.

So if you're not smart nor prepared. That's on your ass honey. Not his. Do not blame him for your stupidity.

But if you know how to play the game,play chess with the serpent. And know these archetypes. Then you may have a better shot. But that's all on you.

Either way,in your favor or not. Do not blame him for telling you exactly what is needed to be said,not what you wanna hear. Honeyed words or not,there's always a sliver of truth and bitter pill of truth in his words. And he's good at making either people hate his guts or bow and worship him.

Which is why the gods,titans,etc want these kombatants,warriors to be stupid. So they are easy to control,to get what they want.

Like it's glaringly obvious that mortal kombats story has these type of tropes and symbolism in it. But people are too blind,for various reasons. To see it.

I could get deep. It's a videogame,i know. It is what it is.

But the more i look at mk12/mk1 shang tsung. The more i feel its a missed opportunity to showcase these themes better for him.

Like holy shit dude. Shang tsung pointing out the hypocrisy of the gods. And whispers in our earthrealm warriors ears. And maybe convincing a few to join his side. Or even better. Our heroes,kung lao and mortal raiden to question liu kang and not blindly follow like fucking idiots. Sure just trust this dude right? Bruh.

Shang tsung is the only one with a brain once again. And i hate them making everyone else so stupid to make him seem better in the shithole plot of theirs. If you can call it a plot.

It burns me,that it's a waste of potential.

She should've let him leave and come back... or at least explained why she didn't want him to leave before deciding (ex: 'Homelander will kidnap you', etc). She needed to let him make the decision for himself... agh. AAAAA.

And now Butcher's no use because he's committed to being evil and can't offer ANYTHING good to Ryan!!! He was so right, they NEEDED to give Ryan more space... I know the external pressures seemed impossible, but dammit, Grace, this was no way to beat the odds!

Between doomed children who have been manipulated, groomed, and isolated into becoming products of their environments, someone scorned who has been punished unfairly by having your biological heart torn out your chest and turning your children and all of reality against you to satiate their own ego, a nonhuman entity so powerful and so clueless they unintentionally threaten the lives of everyone around them, Malistaire FELL DOWN BRO. writing villians is. hard. especially when they completely out shine the villain you've been building up to for an entire campaign and become your new favorite guy For context, I ran a campaign, name irrelevant, with technically 4 major villains. There was the BBEG, Mortiferum, a lich who threatened to return and cast the Infinite Undeath, a spell that'd basically cause all the dead ever to rise again and start killing people. And then there was the Mortiferum Trio. 3 lil goobers hired by Mortiferum to stop the party. They were comedy relief characters, mostly. They consisted of Sullivan, a artificer who was normally incompetent but he had magical hair which made him intelligent in short bursts. He died like 5 sessions after he first appeared beacause the party made him slap his face into gravel so hard he died (he was hit in the back of the head with an eldritch blast tbf) There was Shiro, who was a bronze Dragonborn Samurai. He had a quirk of never actually speaking, only signing to communicate. He was very honor-bound, and never directly snuck up on the party, choosing to always face them head on. His honor-bound nature and his respect for the party actually lead to him becoming a DMPC, and being the only character to survive after the end of the campaign. Then there was Sourcen S Sorcerer (real name Eric but he doesn't like to be called that). Sourcen, as the name suggests. Is a Sorcerer. And he became the most compelling, interesting villain I think that campaign had. Sourcen was a fellow who. Quite enjoyed his line of work. He never cared about money or fame when it came to what he did (and he did get fame because he would fucking obliterate common thugs with 4th level Scorching Rays on occasion and other shenagins of the sort), and only did it because he enjoyed it. I wrote him using one of my favorite tropes in mind which I like to call "Funny guys who are actually NOT fucking around". That was to say he was silly most of the time, but actually had greater ambitions and evil plans, and the skill to back it up. However, you know who didnt have that. You know who didnt get the chance to shine with great moments such as going "I bore of the ground" before casting flight? You know who didn't get to have witty banter with the party about how what he does is only just for fun? You know whos character DIDNT get explored AT ALL because I was too focused on the character who the party were far more enthralled in? The literal evil giga-powerful Lich who was planning to cause the fucking Zombie Apocalypse. As such, I began to write Sourcen into the ending of the entire campaign. I'll spare the details, but while I could have done better, it made for a decent ending fight... which undermined the villain I had built the entire campaign around. Moral of the story: if you determine your gonna make a villan already established in a campaign as a real, tangible threat for the party to take down... make sure they arent in fucking hiding and never come out to do villainous things. Beacacuse then you'll end up with a Sourcen. And while he's good. And great. And I love him dearly. Dear GOD can he outshine the rest of the villans in the campaign.

he frequently calls you brain dead, he throws out the idea of turning you in to GLaDOS' so he can live, he spends a full minute insulting children and calling manual laborers stupid - because that's how he's been treated. he was made to be stupid, he was abandoned by his creators because they didn't care, and then he's insulted time and time again by being called a moron when, if you actually look at the game from his perspective, he's the one who's did all the work!!

he has been kicked, insulted, almost killed and ignored his entire life no SHIT he's more than happy to turn those exact same actions onto other people without any sort of care for their feelings. no one's ever cared for his?? so why should he??

people either have him as a stammering uwu little baby who's either completely helpless or a creep or they make him super over confident when he's neither. yes, he stutters and yes there are times he's embarrassed but that's because he overthinks and has a hard time putting things into words. he is fucking terrifying, yes, but it's not because he's confident. it's because he's willing to do anything just to prove he can.

wheatley is so mischaracterized it hurts and it makes me so upset. this game has been out for ten years and i need my guy to be seen as the actual nuanced character he is.
