The wedding, when it came, had a fairy-tale quality, in this very remote church, with no electricity, and it happened after dark. It felt quite otherworldly, very dreamlike. - John Perry Barlow
Carolyn was stunning and very stark — as if the few lights were just for her, with the rest of us in darkness and her betrothed's face leaning into her halo. When John fumbled with the ring, Carolyn gently put her hand on his shoulder and laughed. The moment that she put her hand on his shoulder to reassure him that everything was okay, that was quite a loving subtlety. But that was her. - Billy Noonan
It was an incredibly magical moment. I saw it as it was unfolding, almost in silhouette. It was virtually dark outside. John reached for the hand of Carolyn; she was caught off guard. I'm walking backwards in the light rain at dusk, and John does this amazing gesture, taking her hand and bringing it to his lips. It was lovely, the spontaneity of that gesture. - Denis Reggie
#john f. kennedy jr.#carolyn bessette kennedy#*#history#historyedit#so uncanny tagging this as history GOOD GOD WHAT YEAR IS IT#i went on a field trip to that church about three years after they died#i was thrilled because my parents always buy copies of the times/post/daily news whenever we live through a Historic Moment#so we have a whole dresser that's just bursting with newspapers and obviously EVERYONE ran that last image after they died#to the point where it just became crazy-engraved in my mind#(you wouldn't last an hour in the asylum where they raised me etc. etc.)#anyway the p.s. to the story is that i was supposed to write a school report on the history behind the church#but OF COURSE i turned in a treatise on the exact spot where jfk jr. kissed carolyn bessette's hand#i was way too into the kennedys for a literal child who still watched the wonderful world of disney every sunday night

On a similar note, the Supernatural Breaking News meme was funny earlier on, but as it's coming to be used for literally every single bit of minor news and people are more and more going "this is always how I learn about news first" or "I get my news only through this meme", I am BEGGING YOU to not get your news primarily off random Tumblr users and memes.
Subscribe to the (free) email newsletters of the national newspapers of record, multiple of them to catch the spectrum. Do the same for your regional, specialty, or local papers, especially the dailies and the ones that are not tabloids or conservative rags. Tune into their daily and weekly news brief podcasts and shows.
Contribute to their circulation count by actually reading and listening to their coverage. If you means to do so, actually subscribe to these papers; journalism and news reporting requires financial support. If their reporting or coverage is insufficient or does something you don't like, consider writing a letter to the editor complaining about it; if their reporting or coverage is fantastic and does something you do like, considering writing a letter to the editor highlighting it.
Some of you act like news reporting comes out of thin air and keep giving credit to memes and Twitter reposts, then don't contribute any credit or support to the journalists and organizations that actually did the reporting in the first place. There is constant eulogizing about how journalism, local newspapers, and print news is dying—that reporting of non-conservative political leaning is getting smothered—and then absolutely none of you put any effort into getting your news anywhere that isn't a Supernatural meme.
#Am I thinking about this bc one of the oldest newspapers still in print ended their daily print and is hurtling toward full closure? Yes.#I know I'm super lucky in that I live in New York and there's literally a hundred local papers but check out what your local paper is like.

HEAVE-HO, ME LADS!-- Resplendent in full dress uniform. Admiral Buster Keaton strikes an attitude before the "land yacht," in which he is touring California. He's en route to Lake Tahoe.

Daily press, September 28, 1989
The more things change, the more they stay the same. 35 years ago people in South Carolina were still reeling from Hurricane Hugo. Very strange how people could just go to someone's house to donate (see left column) back then.
Imagine getting ready to get on a plane to London when you collapse at the airport.
I'd never heard of the comic Outland, it was a spinoff of Bloom County that ran only on Sundays. Here is Mortimer Mouse:
(eBay seller Erickson Comics and Paper)
I found this Sunday night, and then Monday night, I find out that Pete Rose died! VHS Tapes Old newspapers are magic.
Even in 1989, the clothes in these A&N ads already looked outdated. It was always like this with them. I could pull up a newspaper from 1994, and the clothes would look like the clothes people wore in ... 1989.
ooh, we have a Phar-Mor alert. We were not a Phar-Mor family, we did not visit the mythical store known as Phar-Mor. My mom said that area was too crowded. It was like a giant variety store with a pharmacy, right?
I was nosy, and looks like they broke up in 2001. So the Yorks were trying to gain "custody" of their embryo from a lab in Norfolk (they lived in California). I'm not sure if the couple were successful at having children though.
Oh no! It's our boy David Merritt! We remember him from the August 1, 1993 newspaper entry. Remember, his restaurant didn't open until 1992, and was hyping that it was going to open on April 7, 1990.
These ads are magnificent.
Old Mill? I gotta say it:
For you dead mall fans out there, both Outlets Ltd and Great American Outlet Mall are long gone.
I never thought that My Two Dads needed one censor, let alone two. I gotta watch My Two Dads, it has Paul Reiser and Dana from Step by Step! I love that podcast she has with Christine Lakin about Step by Step.
Speaking of censorship, STOPLESS GIRLS. I looked up the address, and looks like it was torn down.
No Cathy in this strip, but there are Fax jokes. Remember faxing in your lunch order? Onion rolls seem so old skool, I feel like I remember seeing them at the bakery at the grocery store when I was a real little kid, and then never again. Is it a regional thing? Do people not eat onion rolls in Hampton Roads anymore?
Garfield was upsetting that day.
OH I almost forgot. Speaking of upsetting:
A man on his bike was hit by a car down the street from the newspaper offices. So just you know, walk down the street and take a photo of it and put it on the front page of the local section. I hope Allen was ok. The McDonalds where it happened is long gone, but the building remains.
/edit/
So the day I went to publish this, I had to take the long way home from Suffolk, and I drove by this intersection on my way to the James River Bridge. Old newspapers ARE magic.
I know we make jokes about certain people putting raisins in potato salad, but what about raisins in your chicken.
I love the names of these raisin recipes! Silk Stockings?! Model T?! I would try a lil bite of each of these.
I can't remember where I mentioned this place, but it amuses me SO MUCH that back in the day you could go to Coliseum Mall and buy steaks.
wait. Bryers made jelly? I wonder if that's the same fruit that was in that yogurt they used to make that was so good. Breyers ice cream is soo bad now.
!! This was my friend Paul's mom! I about flipped when I saw this. This is exactly how five year old me remembers her. She would give me rides to school sometimes in her old jeep and would pick my mom up for room mothers.
Finally, this Eastern Airlines ad is beautiful. They had about a year and a half left, closed in 1991.
I completely forgot to post for September, I got 🦠 at the end of August that went into the first week of September, then I had to get ready for the Norfolk Zine fest, then then this weekend? Is Richmond Zine fest. Don't forget, my zines are available on my Etsy shop.
And there's a new design over at my TeePublic.

this panel right here is why i headcanon that damian might like astrology.
he has a lot of uncertainty about himself and his place in the world, which leads him to find comfort in something as fixed, predictable and divine as the transits of planets and constellations.
another headcanon is that back when he’s with talia, she used to point at the stars on the desert sky and teach damian their names and origins, so reading daily horoscope is a way of connecting to his childhood home and to talia. it comforts him that although they’re far apart, they still live under the same sky. bruce bought damian a telescope to put near his bedroom window for occasional stargazing.

A chink in the armor
What you're looking at here used to be the offices of the Cheboygan Daily Tribune. Last week they took the sign away.
The shop, on Main Street in my adopted northern-Michigan City, is now the Enchanted Knight. You can no longer buy a newspaper there, but you can get a suit of armor, or "fully functional" medieval weapons.
The news site Bridge Michigan quoted the owner of the new store as saying, “We have the largest selection of battle-ready weaponry you can find,”
Can we extprapolate from this that people are more interested in medieval fantasies than local news ...?
I don't know, but I do know that local newspapers are going the way of chain mail, accelerating in 2023 to an average rate of of 2.5 per week.
Cheboygan County has now joined the other 200 counties in the U.S. that are considered to be local news "deserts." But if we ever have need for a jousting lance ...
The Tribune was founded in the 1870s and began daily publication around 1910. What's left of it is owned by Gannett, the scourge of journalism that also owns the Lansing State Journal, the paper I worked for.
