One of the thing this season (especially that last episode) does really well is building Shadowsan's character. When you start thinking about it, he's absolutely fascinating.

As a young operative, he receives from his (crime) teachers the mission of killing his other teacher, and he goes to do it without any questions.

He finds himself with said teacher's baby and brings her to a thieves' den, to the very people who commandeered her father's murder.

He doesn't want this child to become a thief, but doesn't do much to prevent her to - except trying to convince the other teachers not to accept her as a student. He says he never wanted her to follow that path ("I could not bear the thought of you being faced with having to choose a path of evil"), yet he himself didn't seem to mind staying with THE criminal organization for 20 years, being part of their decision organ and directly training dozens of students every year. He only defects from that organization when he finally reveals the truth to said child, now a young adult.

He keeps lying to her about her origins and his involvement in her father's death, up until he literally can't deny and deflect anymore.

He's just... really interesting. What kind of a person does that? What does it say about him?

Is it apathy? Does he believe, for years on VILE island, that there's nothing left for him, that there's no other way? In the very first episode of the show, he does say "if you choose this path, there will be no turning back" to a young Carmen : that's the way he sees it. He sees no recourse, no other option. He's in this path now, and he's stuck in it. It's defeatism. Shadowsan cut ties with his brother in a way he knows may be unforgivable to Hideo, and joined the biggest and most dangerous criminal organization in the world. Where do you go from here ? VILE is all he has, all there can be for him now. Having lost all ties to literally anything else, all he knows is VILE, their orders, their people, their procedures. Which is why when he leaves the villa with baby Carmen, "the last loose end", he doesn't even think of dropping her on someone's porch or at an orphanage. He can only think of going back to VILE. He doesn't like that path, describes it as evil, but barely tries to get out himself. He never runs away, not with a young Carmen, not after she has escaped the island, not until he thinks she'll die without his intervention.

Shadowsan has surrendered all autonomy he could have, all free will. He is "a soldier with orders to obey".

WIth that in mind, it makes Carmen's role in his life even stronger and sweeter : she gives him back his hope and faith in something better. She gives him the strength to finally renounce the farce he had been playing for years. She gives him the chance to change and do better.

ok WOW. i have so many thoughts on this season but im gonna start with the IMPLICATIONS OF RUNAAN BEING BACK

there are so many ways this can go, i really hope the next season gives this the weight it deserves since the possibilities are ENDLESS

callum and ezran dealing with the fact that this is the man who killed their dad, and after everything thats happened and everything they've learned about elves/xadia and how nothing is as black and white as 'elves are evil monsters', it doesnt change the fact that runaan has harrow's blood on his hands

also, runaan is not unlike harrow for rayla, kinda like the dad that stepped up to take care of these kids that weren't theirs. its not the same of course, raylas parents chose to leave her for the greater good, whereas callum's dad passed away, but after they introduced what callum does know about his father this season, i would love to see this get explored

and runaans relationship with rayla??? shes such a different person than she was at the beginning of the show/the last time he saw her. season one rayla was angry and repressed and down with murder if she thought it was justified, and of course she was, she was still grieving the loss of her parents and dealing with her whole "they were cowards" complex, trying to redeem herself and it shapes so many of her early show decisions. hell, she spent two years alone because of her issues and tendency to self isolate but she's grown so much, she's so much more comfortable expressing her emotions and showing kindness instead of giving everyone the cold shoulder.

and on that note, runaan was one of the key figures in teaching rayla all the ideas that cloud her early show judgement, all of the "hide your emotions," "you're too soft for this" stuff that lead to him actually fighting her during the full moon. how's he going to react to her having spent almost 3 years unlearning all of that. even if he does turn out to have been pulling a 2019 shadowsan "i was doing this to protect you" thing, that doesn't undo everything rayla put herself through

MY EVIL JULIA ARGENT HEADCANONS

She was captured by V.I.L.E in season 4 episode 6 (me thinks?) to help them with translating the relics right?

so what if she was just taken and never given back? what if V.I.L.E though "oh, she's useful! she might be a good operative and be able to catch Carmen Sandiego since she's so OBVIOUSLY in love with her a person she cares about."

anyway here are the headcanons:

She was, like, off the grid (obviously) after she was taken by V.I.L.E. It was like the episode where she was taken.

She was brainwashed like, instantly after she was kidnapped. Though, before, she was forced to give away ACME secrets otherwise they'd kill her only living family (another HC: she only has a dad and a sister)

obviously, she was scared for their lives- if she was threatened with her own death she'd never give away anything- and after some torture finally gave in and just said the basics before getting brainwashed.

she became, with some training, one of the academy's best operatives in history (like black sheep was supposed to be, like shadowsan used to be)

she was still a history nerd, she still had her knowledge on a lot of things and places like she had before

she was a stealth specialist- she could sneak in and out like a shadow and never be caught.

she does ballet as a hobby at V.I.LE

she has no clue who she used to be (obviously) but sometimes gets flashbacks to her time helping Carmen whenever she talks about history

the younger V.I.L.E operatives LOVES her history rants (ha fuck you Devineaux) (no hate tho)

she started fencing as an extracurricular when she was studying in her younger years, and now when she joined V.I.L.E, she keeps getting memories back of those times

she's a better fencer than Professor Maelstrom

she mostly fights with a sabre or hand to hand (another hc: she learnt Kung Fu when she was younger and was one of the best in the country, no wonder ACME wanted her. But she barely uses it now since she's scared she'll legit knock someone out too painfully)

Her codename is Dame Noir, or Lady Black, because her suit is always black
