The lense of plurality through whiteness is not a mistake. It's an intentional attack not only on bipoc bodied system but also on non white cultural acknowledgements and knowledge of the nature of plurality.
Even within the limited scope of acceptance of plurality in colonized culture, the only form that is given any merit is that which seeks to state that plurality is inherently disordered. Plurality is only seen as valid if it inconveniences the person. It completely washes away any other form of plurality or cultural understandings.
It often paints the very existence of plurality as disordered rather than the negative effects of trauma on that plurality. I.e. dissociation, dissociative amnesia, lack of communication, etc.
And because we live in a society that chronically and systematically devalues bipoc trauma, DID is seen by many (incorrectly so) as a 'white disorder'.
Plurality can exist without trauma.
Bipoc trauma is just as real as non bipoc trauma.
The disruptive symptoms of DID does not discriminate based on race but the presentation of those symptoms may vary based on a myriad of factors.
Culturally incompetent doctors are more likely to miscatagorize/ignore/underestimate trauma symptom presentation in non white patients.
Plurality in in of itself is not inherently disordered and insisting so is inherently racist.
Racism in the plural community is a real problem. Racism in the medical community is a real, dangerous problem.
Pour one out for DID/OSDD systems of color that go undiagnosed or misdiagnosed because the psychiatric institution dismisses them.
Pour one out for all systems of color who feel isolated because the online community often conflates plurality with whiteness.
Pour one out for systems of color who get called racist or appropriative because their systems incorporate aspects of their own culture, but people automatically assume they must be white.
Pour one out for systems of color whose voices are silenced because of their ethnicity.
Uplift non-white systems. Talk to non-white systems, not over them.

Studying linguistics is actually so wonderful because when you explain youth slang to older professors, instead of complaining about how "your generation can't speak right/ you're butchering the language" they light up and go “really? That’s so wonderful! What an innovative construction! Isn't language wonderful?"
#linguistics#gen z slang#english#as people in the reblog pointed out!#most gen z slang comes from (or was appropriated from) aave#honestly I was just excited to talk about how people in my field actually get excited about non standard uses of English#instead of ridiculing speakers#and I tagged incorrectly and didn’t point out the very real issues of language and power and appropriation inherent in modern slang#in that much of it was appropriated#and even that which experiences language change in the wider culture still originated in aave#aave is just as linguistically valid as any other English dialect because it is a proper language#and the grammar is incredible!!!#habitual be is fantastic and an excellent example of how a richer case system or a certain case can render an adverb unnecessary#and the phonology is just beautiful#anyway I’m very sorry#I fucked up

what's with the weird glorification of smoking that's come back lately
like
I've seen so many posts that paint opposing smoking as some impossibly Loser-ish or puritanical stance and I really don't get it
it makes you, your house, and your clothing stink, destroys your teeth, and gives you lung cancer. opposing it is. Correct. obviously addiction is very complicated and quitting can be hard, but just saying "smoking is gross and harmful as a practice (including vaping)" is True and Right actually
some of you have never grown up hearing about how some beloved family member died a slow, agonized, wasting death of smoking-induced cancer, or watching it firsthand for yourself, and it shows
#anti smoking#'omg the kids don't smoke anymore so sad!!! sharing a smoke is sociable and Good Old-Fashioned Friendship!!!'#what are you even talking about#I don't care how cool it looks or how ingrained it is in the culture wherever you live#it's BAD. I thought we all KNEW AND AGREED ON THIS#not bad like 'well don't do it to excess and you'll probably be fine' a la drinking- though that has its own issues#and we're way too cavalier about them#but bad like 'no part of doing this in any amount is anything but terrible for your health'

ok but what if we normalize having a party where you dress up & are the center of attention & all your friends congratulate you on your divorce. more unhappy couples would hurry up and pull the plug, i will bet you
#kinda crazy how our wedding-obsessed capitalist culture pressures couples to over-commit & marry before building healthy foundations#'putting on a fancy dress and being celebrated on your special day' sounds so harmless but we teach young girls that it's#something you have to 'earn' by marrying some guy. ANY guy. by an arbitrary deadline of like 27 or whatever#and if you don't get married or get married too late? no party for you!!!#that's insane and we should talk about it more#babe you don't want a wedding you want a quinceañera

“America has no culture” is an inherently racist statement. Especially when talking about California, which has enormous populations (yes, plural) of Hispanic and Asian immigrants.
It’s such a self report that you see the American hegemony, the American monolith, as a singularly white entity that’s worthy of scorn. I want that person to look at the Black American NYC Miku design and tell me with their full chest that that isn’t culture. Especially when modern pop culture owes so much to Black American culture — hip hop, language, streetwear and fashion, pop music, jazz — as is actively erasing their roots, saying all of America has no culture is a dumbass statement.
Also, “all the US Mikus are dressed in generic casual street style for coolish weather.” The original Brazilian Miku is wearing sunglasses, a crop top, short shorts, a bikini, and flip flops you absolute dunce. If you’re gonna be rude at least be consistent.
#not even to mention indigenous folks#personal#delete later#obligatory I don’t like the us I’m not a patriot#but saying this is like saying us doesn’t have it’s own food#TELL ME you’ve never had soul food without telling me you’ve never had soul food#‘we’re not talking about poc Americans though white Americans have no culture’ does my Miku design look white to you.#I think that account got dusted overnight but if they’re still here I’m not surprised if they make a#qualifying backtracking ‘what I meant was’ statement#hey maybe next time if you have a point to make don’t come out the gate swinging like an asshole and yell big generalizing claims

Please understand that there are cultural differences and language differences, if you see this happening let the person clarify what they meant, that person might just not be familiar with words the western side of the internet use
#bearz rambling tag#no it’s not really possible to let everyone who uses this term to change#because as far as I know this is the most common word with use on Chinese websites#I didn’t know that pairing are called ‘ship’ here#like why would I even know that#‘ship’ makes zero sense to me#it took me a while to learn the fandom language people speak here#it’s hard#give people time#shipping culture is very different too#Like on Chinese site you HAVE to clarify the Top and the Bottom of this ship in the ship name#it is very very important to them#people who like the same ship but with different Top Bottom preference will fight till no end#imagine how confused I was when I first got here#where there’s no top bottom differences#it’s not really a smut thing#it’s more a dynamic thing#AxB and BxA is very different#oh I can talk so much about the differences on fandom cultures#if ya are interested in more please feel free to ask#it’s very interesting to me#I wanna talk about it

the strength it must have taken for illario to not immediately go full 'lmao since when have you even had a kiss hello lucanis' sibling violence mode during the café talk. inspirational. rook and lucanis really were doing all that right in front of his salad huh
#lucanis is being SO cringe with that line right out there in public and I would die for him. it's just such a weird thing to say#tbf if anyone in the world is used to the insane things lucanis says and would go 'yes yes lucanis waxing poetic about coffee#in ways normal people reserve for trying to get in someone's pants (the roast won't fuck you lucanis)#we've all heard it' like it's all normal I suppose it would be illario. and also he's too busy with the 'shit fuck shit he's not dead#he's not dead of the family members 'supposed' to be dead we're at two definite failures out of two and woe me if the twain should meet#if that IS a demon in there it sure talks exactly in the same bizarre way only my cousin does#does that mean anything what the fuck do I do who do I kill about this' internal monologue I guess#dragon age#dragon age: the veilguard#dragon age: the veilguard spoilers#dragon age spoilers#illario dellamorte#lucanis dellamorte#rook x lucanis#rookanis#I mean he does very much say that to a non-romancing rook too which only makes it all the more delightfully odd#is it a very lucaniscore way of testing the waters. is it just how he always talks about coffee. many plausible approaches here#no one forced him to bring up kisses and 'you should try it' out of the blue like that is all I'm saying. he could have acted normal#(theoretically)#i feel there are reasons to read some stuff into it lol#lucanis when rye says he prefers tea: it's so over cautious overture I don't quite understand myself yet gently rebuffed#lucanis when rye takes him up on the 'so what should a first kiss be' theme: oh we're so back!!!! wait. what. what do I do now#what is this#it's kind of really sweet that rook answers with their own playfully florid beverage based barely hidden metaphor at the end too#matching freaks and having fun with it#as far as lucanis is concerned rye's only true flaws are 1) prefers tea to coffee (oh well. no one can be perfect. cross-cultural love#can conquer all even in this) and 2) weird taste in interior design (did we really HAVE to bring your 15 foot tall corpse statues#with us home rook. I can understand a tasteful skull here and there but this seems excessive. well if it makes you happy I guess)

i really do think there’s a huge disconnect on here w/ people who have never used tiktok as to what it actually is and who actually uses it. the number of people i’ve seen call it a “teen dancing app” is actually insane. it has not been a teen dancing app since i was in high school, around 2016 - 2020. the main communities i saw on a daily basis were 1) black history/anti-racism educators, 2) high school & college teachers sharing in-classroom strategies and frustrations with the education system, 3) local/state political leaders giving real-time updates on behind-the-scenes government decisions, & 4) community activism & leadership. like tiktok is an adult platform. almost every person i interacted with was my age or older. and yes it completely depends on your fyp and how you interact with the app, yes there’s still teenagers and dance videos and literally anything else you can think of. but these communities of adults aren’t insubstantial at all, they have literally millions of interactions on a daily basis. there’s about a million other types of communities that i could name just off the top of my head, because the range of users was SO diverse and thriving. it’s a long-distance community tool, just like any other social media—and honestly much better than any other social media, because it relies primarily on the kindness of strangers. i saw at least 5-10 videos today of queer people in rural areas panicking because they don’t have any access to queer community on any other platform or in real life. and before i end this i do want to say i think tiktok is coming back, i think this is a highly orchestrated political move, etc., but i do know it won’t ever be exactly the same. people are panicking about free speech violations because tiktok was a place where people fucking SPEAK. i have never seen mass mobilization and communication in this same way for as long as i’ve been alive. it is the people’s app, not just a silly teenage thing. if you’re not on tiktok and never have been, please stop talking about it like you know anything at all😭
#idec if i look stupid for these posts i am fucking Mad#it’s not about doomscrolling. be so fr. i’ve had a time limit on for years and i’ve done perfectly fine#people’s jobs were on this app. small businesses were on this app. fucking CULTURE was on this app#project willow? bisan in gaza? like this is the most interconnected and fast-moving source of news we have#literally straight from the ground. from the places where it’s happening#i know i can still read news. that’s not the problem.#the problem is that i have nowhere else to see the videos from my minnesota legislator who’s been giving daily updates on the republican#coup in the house of representatives. like. do you see the problem.#not to mention half the news sites are paywalled anyway.#and i saw someone say that this forces us to foster irl community which is true again. but you can still have irl community at the same time#as long-distance virtual community????#my best friends are long distance. if all social media went dark i could never talk to them again.#like we are in the fucking 21st century. we should be able to have both.#anyway. sorry for all the ranting lately except i’m really not because i am fucking PISSED#i’ll be on rednote and youtube for a while except neither of them are really the same.#genuinely nothing was like tiktok fr. i miss it already#tiktok#tiktok ban

there’s a japanese new years tradition called 初日の出/hatsuhinode, ‘first sunrise,’ which is when you drag yourself out of bed while it’s still dark on new year’s day and go out to a bridge or somewhere else you’ll have a good view of the horizon to the east.
and then you stand, and you wait.
if you’re me, today, you’re up on a bridge over a river coming off tokyo bay, and the cold ocean wind is vicious in the pre-dawn dim, and even with a good coat and gloves it feels like your nose and ears are slowly freezing off. the sky will get lighter by degrees as it gets closer and closer to sunrise, lines of color forming all along the horizon, and eventually you can pinpoint just where the sun will rise, a splotch of faintly brighter orange against the watercolors. you stare at it until your eyes start to blur.
and you stand, and you wait, and the bridge gets crowded around you, everybody leaning against the rail and looking for the sun and holding their breath, and even if you know to the minute when the sun is supposed to rise, it still feels like it takes longer than it should. in the dim january cold, it can feel like it’s taking a very, very long time.
and then the sun rises, and you realize that you’ve almost forgotten how bright it is.
happy new years, everybody. i hope it’s kind to all of you. あけましておめでとう!!
#this isn’t about one piece but it sort of is#and then it’s also about why i woke up at 5:30am this morning#AND. it’s about why you shouldn’t kill yourself#also yes i’m in japan rn it’s part of why i’ve been absent from tumblr#not japanese#japanese culture#arc: wano kuni#<- why not. it’s what i was thinking#about me#jonny talks
