At this late age of 27 years, I am experiencing something for the first time. This experience is extremely surreal and is, in fact, dealing me psychic damage:
I have read a work of GAY LITERATURE that did not make me immediately run to a03 for fan content.
You are thinking to yourself, “But Theo, I have read gay books that are simply not that good and I have no desire to linger in that book with those characters.” Yeah bro, me too. I also love dumb erotic brain popcorn about hockey players. That’s not what I’m talking about actually, hold tight!
What makes this situation unique in my life is the REASON I have not sprinted to a03. These books were SO GOOD, so meticulously planned, so painfully tragic and romantic, the characters were so ROUNDED and AWFUL and SCREAMINGLY, SEARINGLY PERFECT, that I cannot fathom reading fic about them.
There is one person I trust to write more about these people in their world, and that person is CS PACAT BECAUSE THE BOOKS ARE THE FUCKING DARK RISE BOOKS.
Like, please understand. I am a child of the 00s. I grew up roleplaying Drarry on fucking Facebook Forum, I read and wrote Drarry fic like my life depended on it. I came up in a fandom with inarguably garbage source material that the fans made something BEAUTIFUL out of — that’s its own beautiful and shiny thing, love that for us, I still draw crummy Drarry art because I still have Drarry brain rot.
I am also NOT A STRANGER TO PACAT! I started with Captive Prince, I love Captive Prince, but you know what? I also love Captive Prince fic.
There’s something that Pacat has done with Dark Rise that seems like it was specifically built for me, fucking *Collar* style. I cannot stop thinking about it, I cannot stop pacing about it, I have never before understood the term “going feral” like I do right now, but I CANNOT SOOTHE MYSELF IN THE ONLY WAY I KNOW (read: fic) BECAUSE I NEED TO KNOW WHAT REALLY HAPPENS TO THEM.
I am also 100% sure that this is at least in part because the series is not finished and some part of my lizard brain is like, trying to keep this experience pure while it’s still happening.
I know I’m like, screaming into the void here but does anyone know what the fuck I’m talking about? Do you guys do this? Just me? Help!

For the first time in its history, Call the Midwife fans have a two-part Christmas special to look forward to ahead of new episodes in the New Year.
Rather than the traditional 90-minute instalment, the BBC has confirmed that there will be two 60-minute episodes, which will also include a Christmas cliffhanger.
"Who doesn't love finding an extra, unexpected present underneath the Christmas tree?" said creator and writer Heidi Thomas OBE.
"When I was asked to write a two-part Christmas special for 2024, I couldn't resist!"
Executive producer Dame Pippa Harris added: "For the first time, viewers can luxuriate in a two-part festive treat this Christmas. Heidi has created a spellbinding special which I know will delight our loyal fans."
Director of BBC Drama Lindsay Salt hailed Call the Midwife as "one of UK television's most popular festive traditions".
She continued: "And this year we wanted to go even better, with Call the Midwife's biggest Christmas ever!
"Heidi and the team have lined up an absolute treat, with two irresistible episodes packed full of everything fans will love about this very special series at Christmas time."
All of the "well-loved characters" will be back for the two-parter, which picks up in Christmas 1969.
The midwives are "all busy delivering babies and doing the job they are most dedicated and committed to", while Poplar also welcomes a funfair, which adds "a burst of colour and excitement to the frosty landscape".
But there will be challenges, including influenza and the Hong Kong flu, not to mention an escaped prisoner.
As the neighbourhood prepares for a carol concert, "fears grow that he may be in the local area after a spate of break-ins".
Elsewhere, "the Turner children are caught up in the fever surrounding the Blue Peter Christmas appeal to collect dinky cars and scrap metal, Trixie makes a fleeting visit to Nonnatus House and is delighted to see her brother Geoffrey, and Miss Higgins has her grandson Harry stay for Christmas".
Violet also has her hands full hosting a mince pie competition, "but the Buckles' preparations for Reggie’s homecoming are thrown into turmoil".

i'm thinking about the parallels between Will, James, and Violet and
Will's mother tried to kill him at birth because she knew who he had been, and then abused him his entire childhood instead of nurturing and caring for him. then tried to kill him AGAIN on her death bed. And yet Will is deeply compassionate for others, he constantly tries to do what is best for others with almost no concern for his own safety or happiness. All he wants most in the world is for someone to truly know him, and to still love him.
James was eleven when his father tried to kill him, when every person he had ever known (literally! he has never left the hall!) turned against him. Every good thing he had ever done, all his trying to be perfect, it's completely ignored and he is abandoned. And yet he turns out to be loyal to a fault, deeply protective over his friends, and surprisingly vulnerable with those he trusts. Once again, all he wants most in the world is for someone to truly know him, and to still love him.
Violet was conceived and raised to be slaughtered. Her mother was murdered and she was raised by a family who hated her (except for Tom who has his own complicated shit going on). All she thought she knew, all she thought she could trust, was a lie. And yet she is the bravest, the most loyal, the most trusting person of all of them. She will risk herself every time for others and she believes in Will until the very end, and even when she realizes he is the Dark King she still wants to trust in him. Because all she wants most in the world is for someone (specifically her family) to truly know her, and to still love her.
These are three kids raised with so much trauma who turned out to be the most selfless people. Who just want to be loved. And not one of them gets that. I'm completely sick over this.

I write who my characters are and what they do. Some of them are scuzzbags, some are avaricious, some are well-meaning but irritating as fuck, and some are outright murderers.
I do not write to Teach Ethics. I am not some fucking Victorian, Writing For the Edification of Those of Lesser Moral Constitutions.
I selfishly write solely for myself. If other people enjoy what I write, huzzah. If not, I don't care.
This makes me want to write a Clannibal fic. Hannibal & Starling Eat Take-Out.

Look what I've purchased - yup When the Rose Speaks its Name a Sherlock Holmes Anthology, a charity anthology showcasing queer Holmes and Watson inspired by the original Arthur Conan Doyle canon.
I can't wait to start to read it but right now I need to finish something before I do so later today :)

Can we please talk about the portrayal of domestic abuse in children's media?
Because it's fucked up.
Trigger Warning / Content Notion: I'm talking about my experience and trauma as a child abuse survivor, nothing graphic or drastic, no details about the abuse, but it is a bit bleak and might be upsetting, especially for people who have experienced abuse themselves and/or are very sensitive to other people's pain. There's some cursing.
A great example of this is Harry Potter (of course the TERF princess Jowling Kowling Rowling isn't the only one guilty of it, it's all over the place - which makes it even worse, because we're bombarded by this bullshit from everywhere, with almost no alternative).
Tumblr media
The main character is abused by the family he's living with, socially isolated, bullied at school, has no support system, and the abuse is the only thing he knows. And then he goes to magical school, and BAM, he's making friends, he's assertive, confident, brave, sets boundaries, goes on to save the fucking world (yeah the surface-level understanding of oppression and bigotry in HP is a topic for another time).
I'll admit, relating to Harry when I was a kid did help me survive. But at the same time, it gave me very unrealistic expectations of what the trauma will do to me. I thought something is wrong with me, that I'm weak, because the abuse didn't make me stronger, it fucking destroyed me.
Tumblr media
As you probably already know, and as I know now, that's what abuse does. It doesn't make you stronger, it doesn't build you up, it doesn't do anything good, it destroys you, sometimes forever. To grow as a person you need love, safety, support, good role models, space to learn and explore you interests.
I made myself strong. I'm cool, smart, interesting, kind, brave, caring, resilient and a good friend not because of the abuse, but despite it. I owe nothing to my abusive parents; every good thing I have in my life is there thanks to the people that helped me escape from them, protected me from them, made me feel safe and at ease, showed me love, compassion and understanding, gave me the space to be my hurt self, with all the good and bad, appreciated me, assured me that what I was put through was fucked up and nobody, especially a child, should ever be treated like this.
Yeah, I probably wouldn't be a very interesting action movie character, with my sleeping for days, crying, not leaving the house or showering for a week, not being able to make any friends, jumping at every sudden noise, not eating, nightmares, being barely conscious because I can't sleep and all the other fun stuff PTSD does to you. But maybe your hero doesn't have to go through abuse. Maybe losing your parents as a baby is tragic enough. Fuck, the Dursleys could even still try to isolate him from anything magical and oppose to Harry going to Hogwarts, not because of hatred, but because they would want to protect him from his parents' fate.
This narration is not just minimizing the impact, it's gloryfying abuse, trying to paint it as something with positive consequences. It doesn't have any. There's no "good damage". I could've been safe, happy and healthy for my whole life. Nothing good came out of my suffering. Maybe if I knew it, I would've asked for help earlier.
Children deserve to know the truth. Sometimes you need to simplify it a bit, but stories about heroes becoming good people because of their trauma are not simplification, they are lies, and they are further hurting people who are already hurt and vulnerable.

🌸 Five comfort characters, five tags🌸
As always, I can never answer this without thinking about the definition of comfort character. At least for today, I’m defining it as a character who when I run into him/her after an absence, I think to myself, “Ah! It’s you again.” And I mentally curl up against the character and get comfy, even if said character is sometimes awful/prickly/difficult/murderous. Also, not picking any opera characters, simply because the specific performance is so vital to the comfort level. I mean, is there anything less comforting than a singer fucking up a character you love?

Emma Woodhouse (Jane Austen)

Cesare Borgia (The Borgias)
