Module Brief

This brief asks you to complete the entire pre-production process for your project, so that you are ready to begin production in Semester 2. The pre-production process will differ depending on the type of project you undertake, but will involve researching, planning (primary research, story-boards, animatics, character designs, scripts, moodboards,colour swatches, etc) and starting to making the assets (such as artwork, sets, models, characters, sound) for a production.Further guidance on routes previous students have taken will be provided in the initial lecture.  

Module Synopsis

The aim of this module is to undertake research and development that will lay the foundation for the major project.This module will provide the basis for an advanced level of intellectual and creative investigation into an appropriate research subject. For example the Final Project may be the production of an animated short film. Therefore, at this stage the student must carry out key pre-production research and development in both the creative and technical sides of the project. Creatively the student would develop the narrative,character designs, initial storyboards, and fully articulate the creative direction of the final piece. On a technical level the student must identify all of the key technical challenges of the proposed film, such as complex effects and the design production pipeline. The student will be able to confidently apply intellectual and process skills to a design solution and defend their solution.

Renderfarm classes will be provided for students interested in learning how to use advanced render software and networking to create their work.  

Key questions

Your final film will define your entrance to the animation industry. What do you want to be known for? What kind of job interests you? It is also the best opportunity you will have for indulging your imagination and working solidly on a single idea for an elongated stretch of time. What ideas have you been yearning to bring into the world? What is the best project to demonstrate all of the skills you have learned so far? What does the world need right now? This module places an equal emphasis on the quality of the idea and technical prowess.  

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge & Understanding:

1. Understand how to undertake pre-production processes for short-form animated films.

2. Know how to communicate and pitch these ideas to others,utilising a range of visual and verbal communication techniques.

Intellectual / Professional skills & abilities:

3. Be able to develop original and intellectually robust ideas/assets for a short animated film.

4. To demonstrate thorough and rich independent learning and research, with a focus on acquiring new skills and knowledge.

5. Demonstrate a critical awareness of practice in relation to theory.

Personal Values Attributes (Global / Cultural awareness, Ethics,Curiosity) (PVA):

6. Develop understanding of personal role/specialism within animation industry.  

Deliverables

Formative assessment will occur via verbal feedback given by staff and peers in workshops, group crits., individual tutorials and supervised studio sessions.

There are two summative assessments for this module.Component one requires you to submit Storyboard, Animation Assets and Development work. The exact deliverables may vary per project, but will generally include:- extensive blog containing developing documentation.-standard pre-production documents such as primary research, storyboards, animatics, character designs, scripts,moodboards, colour swatches, etc.-all of the assets required for the project should be completed.This generally includes artwork, rigs, environments, sound,and other assets as appropriate to the project addressing MLOs 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6.

This component (1) constitutes 60% of the final grade.

Component The second summative assessment is a 3000 word critical/contextual document. This is worth 40% of the overall grade. Feedback will be provided on a draft version of the written component. Verbal feedback will be given in group and individual tutorials. MLOs 3, 5.

Summative assessment will be provided in written form at the end of the module for both components.

11th January 2023, 5pm.

Final presentation and submission of work online.

Component 1 (practical element) and Component 2 (written element) to be submitted electronically via the ELP module site, via the assessments section.

Unlike the Jester board this is an aesthetic I’m a lot more comfortable with.

hey sorry i would just like to clarify ! are you asking for a caleb gay/genderfluid one and then a molly gay/genderfluid one (or like caleb gay / molly genderfluid) i just wanna double check because im not comfortable making a gay man one for molly due to him being canonically bisexual !
