Long Boring Health Insurance Rant: Provider Edition

A few years ago, United Healthcare decided to give medical providers no choice about how they were paid. Incrementally, everyone was migrated to EBT payments, unless they went through the process of getting payments sent by Direct Deposit, which was made intentionally byzantine, and the physician I worked for didn't want to do it because it was a small office and they didn't have a big fancy records system that could perform complex functions like integrating directly with their banking. The problem with EBT payments, though, is that they must be processed like a credit payment, and when the card isn't present, an even larger transaction fee is taken out of the payment. There is no card in this case, just a number, so you're losing 3.5% + 15 cents or whatever of a $17.00 payment (Yes! Someone's copay can be $50 and United would be paying $17.00-30.00 and there's nothing a doctor can do about the contracted rate except not take the insurance at all and lose patients.) Of course United didn't make these payments in batches, which was customary, so someone in a doctor's office has to sit and process $17 payment after $17 payment over and over and over again.

I think they did this because they were paying out more money during the pandemic and they were trying to find money saving measures that wouldn't get them bad press. So suddenly, they were saving money on paper by not having to mail anything. Doctors had to go online to retrieve the EBT and the remittance forms, WHICH, by the way ARE NOT ASSOCIATED WITH ONE ANOTHER. Which patient's claim is this payment for? Who knows!? See if you can make a match from a check number! If there was information missing, there was no one to call about it who would do anything. Things would not get reconciled. Small offices need a physical remittance form to facilitate workflow with bookkeeping, so those needed to be printed, therefore shifting the printing expense onto the provider's back. What I also think they were doing with this change in procedure was making it both difficult for admin to tell what they were looking at, to spend unreasonable amounts of time doing forensics to match payments to remittance forms with patient names and dates of service on them, and then, if a claim was erroneously denied, to push the idea of appealing the denial into the territory of unsustainable money loss. To have a staff member spend ANY time appealing $17 ($16.25) in a confusing process that may or may not actually lead to the claim being paid, you're spending at least double the amount of money you're fighting over. They make it hard for providers on purpose. They deny things up front on PURPOSE because there's a good chance the provider will accept the loss because they really can't, not even being selfish, afford to fight it. It's unbelievably petty. And it really works.

This is true for many insurance companies, though Cigna and Aetna seem to be pretty decent comparatively, but United and Blue Cross really are the worst. Something people may not also know is that both Blue Cross and United have lowered their contracted rate of payment to doctors EVERY YEAR for as long as I've been watching, and not just a little. A visit that used to be covered at $89.06 ten years ago is now $56.00. Was it $156 in 2012? Now it's $103.11. That sort of shit. It almost never goes up. Why? Inflation doesn't deflate. They do it because they can and doctors have no recourse.

I think this is also why you see Medicare/Medicaid fraud sometimes, and it's not always because someone is greedy. Providers really might be trying to break even due to being paid BELOW COST for services by several other insurance companies (United definitely being one of them), and Medicare/Medicaid is the only insurer whose claims process is automated and not actively playing Keep Away with payments. I almost cried (I probably did cry) the first time I put a claim through to Medicaid... because it was just paid. Right then. Result visible on the website immediately. Not a lot of money by any means, but enough.

There's no shock value here at all compared to what patients experience (I've seen things that I can't even begin to forget). And I'm not trying to say "woe is the physician". I just know the full scale of the bullshit being conducted by these useless middlemen, who do nothing but sit around coming up with increasingly dystopian ideas, isn't necessarily known to the average person who doesn't deal with medical billing.

I mean, WHY is it okay, and not a DEEEEP conflict of interest, for an insurance company to start a medical clinic franchise and push you hard to use it if you have their insurance? THAT EXISTS.

Anyway.

He’s absolutely so furious with himself, more then you are with him. When you spin around angrily and yell at him to ‘leave me alone.’ he comically drops down to his knees and puts his head in his hands as he’s that distraught. He pulls at his hair in frustration, almost ripping out strands because of how much force he’s using— but he doesn’t care. You’re mad at him, and all he can do is pathetically watch as you walk further and further away. Doesn’t even trying to bother and reach out for you, because he knows he’s not deserving, and doesn’t have the right to.

He kind of just, sits there for a while and debates on what he should do. If you want him to beg for forgiveness, to drop down to the dirty floor and kiss your shoes like a servant, he would do it in a heartbeat— if it meant your forgiveness. If you wanted gifts, he’s using every last mora in his bank account and stealing his mothers credit card to purchase stuff he’d think you’d like— no matter the price. He knows he’s going to get in trouble by Ei, but if having his mom yell in his face for a couple hours meant you’d take him back, he’d do it all over again. If you actually do want him to give you some space, he’ll of course agree with no complaints whatsoever, but that doesn’t mean he’ll be happy about it. He believes that he was put on this earth to live and serve you— so anytime separated, big or small, has him biting his nails and scratching at his skin. It’s like torture.

All his thoughts are pretty much —

“god, I’m so fucking worthless.”

“Why the hell did I do that?”

“It’s my fault, it’s all my fault.”

“Stupid. Stupid. Stupid. You’re so stupid, Scaramouche.”

When you reconcile, he’s swears to you that he’ll never make that same mistake again. And he doesn’t, because he becomes so much more focused on your body language that he can quickly tell when you start to get agitated towards him— and he swiftly drops whatever he was doing and directs the conversation to some else.

In the end— Scaramouche doesn’t think he can last another second knowing that he made you mad.

Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters GX Episodes 108-109 Subbed (Finalized)

TURN-108: Professor Cobra's Assassin

Professor Cobra announces the "Disclosure Duels," a system of publicizing one's skill and performing duels openly. He also provides all of the students with their own Dis-Belts to gauge their fighting spirit through their passion, focus, and decisiveness in those duels. Cobra then orders O'Brien to duel Judai--and to do so in a way that brings forth all of Judai's latent abilities. Putting his strategy into action, O'Brien takes Shou hostage and duels Judai.

TURN-109: Judai and the Fiery O'Brien

O'Brien aims to bring out all of Judai's latent abilities by using Shou as a hostage. As expected, Judai causes a serious battle to unfold, which he responds to using his Fire deck, activating his Firewall Permanent Trap against Judai's direct attacks to negate his attempts to attack him directly. For his part, Judai Contact-Fuses Neos with Flare Scarab, summoning Flare Neos for a counterattack, but...

Sorry, didn't mean to leave these two episodes hanging for just over a month~ sorry Shou

Episodes 108 and 109 are now finalized! Professor Cobra comes in and starts up the Dis-Duels, which will play a big role in this early part of the season, and we get more time with O'Brien as he duels with Judai on Cobra's orders and ends up having a little fun with it towards the end. It's a fun duel, O'Brien makes a fiery entrance with his Blaze Cannon/Blaze Cannon Trident cards, and I love the sequence in 109 as Judai uses Flare Neos with probably my favorite use of the "Fervent Duel" OST track. Also, 109 in general is a fun episode because of all the top-notch artwork going on, with some interesting angles or some really good motion frames from the animation team (Judai ordering Featherman to swoop in against O'Brien [which gets reused once or twice] is so good). Also nice character moments with Shou about reconciling his ideal from Ryou about respecting opponents with the need to have all-out heated duels to survive, a nuance that gets lost in the dub for the most part. Though speaking of the dub, I did like Axel's (O'Brien's) dub voice for the most part, though it has a rough spot or two later on when he's cowering from the Supreme King.

Animation error-wise, we mostly have some quality-of-watching touch-ups, as there weren't any card errors I picked up on; 108 had one minor touch-up near the end, while 109 had just over a handful of mostly split-screen touch-ups. Details below the cut for the interested, as always~

Quick housekeeping: in case you missed it, I reuploaded 105-107 after noticing I didn't catch an update to one of the names under the In-Between Animation credits, along with some minor consistency fixes in the rest of the credits; these were reposted over on NAC and updated in the Masterpost linked above, and 108-109'll join them on NAC in the next day or two.

Anywho, enjoy! With these done, I'll probably go back to some fixes I've been working on for episode 1 that I missed, then I'll get a bit more looked over on Tag Force Special stuff (in case you missed that news~) before working on 110 as a quick two-parter break; stay tuned!

Fixes/Edits! (108)

Near the end of the episode, as O'Brien draws for his turn, there's a coloring error with some shading along the bottom of his left shoulder where the shading is lighter like with the lighter spots higher up; it's fixed for a few frames but then goes back to lighter. Fixed this by recoloring that shading spot in the frames during the quick zoom-out that happens using Photoshop, then masked out and held the shading in the last fixed frame for the rest of the shot.

Fixes/Edits! (109)

After the 108 recap but before the OP, we get this quick scene with Cobra watching on and saying that, even if he loses, O'Brien has to bring out all of Judai's Duel Energy (a scene cut from the dub [I wonder if this error is why]), but there's an odd animation error that happens where the line on the upper left of his mouth (his left) and the jaw shading are pixels away from where they should be--this only happens for the frames where he has this fully open lip-flap and his semi-open lip-flap going. Fixed this in Photoshop by redrawing the mouth line and filling in the jaw shading along the shading that was there.

Later, after O'Brien activates his Firewall and asks Judai if he thought weak attacks would work on him, Judai notes that O'Brien didn't summon any Monsters so it wouldn't be any fun not diving right in; a semi-surprised O'Brien slides in on a split-screen acknowledging this, but there's a quick frame as the split-screen is completed where the border flickers into its final position--fixed this in Sony Vegas by just replacing the earlier frame with the latter. Then, as they split off the screen to show Shou behind them, Judai's side takes a frame longer than O'Brien's to fully get offscreen; fixed in Vegas by using the frame after in that frame's place.

Later, Judai grunts after O'Brien uses Burial from a Different Dimension to return three Fire-Type Monsters to his Cemetery, and O'Brien slides in on a split-screen to say that he's removing one from it to activate Firewall against Flare Neos's attack--but Judai starts moving for it a couple of frames before O'Brien actually starts sliding in, and along with that, the border on their split-screen ends up being off-center. Fixed these in Vegas, first by redoing the split so it's timed with Judai moving, then ending the slide-in with the border centered, moving O'Brien's side into place so that his mouth and hand move properly for the rest of the split-screen. Then, a frame before they start splitting apart as Firewall activates, O'Brien's side moves but Judai's stays still; fixed by holding the split-screen still over that frame.

A bit after, once Judai uses Contact Out to de-fuse Flare Neos and attack to make O'Brien run out of Monsters to remove from play, O'Brien grunts as Judai slides in on a split-screen to remind him about Flare Scarab's power-up effect--but like with Judai in #3 above, O'Brien starts moving for the split-screen a couple frames before Judai starts sliding in. Then, as their split ends, there's a quick frame where they start to split apart to show Flare Scarab behind them but don't actually split; this is likely why their splits then end up sliding out unevenly. with Judai's taking an extra frame to fully slide out. Fixed these all in Vegas by first redoing it so that Judai's slide-in is timed with O'Brien moving; then, I masked in part of Flare Scarab from the next frames over them as they start to split, adding a new border to O'Brien and Judai's splits; and then finally, I redid their split-outs so that they were timed evenly.

After the eyecatch, we see more of Cobra watching the duel, and Judai and O'Brien come up on a split-screen with their current LP counts--they start to split apart a frame before their LP counts disappear to show Cobra, with this quick frame having just white behind them, along with O'Brien's split missing its border. Fixed this in Vegas by just holding the previous frame over it so that the split-out starts in the next frame, once the LP counts are gone.

(6) A bit later, after O'Brien lets Shou go, Cobra looks on in surprise, but there are a few quick frames where the shading along his jaw is incomplete; fixed in Photoshop for the lip-flap frames where it happens, then placed them in the footage in Vegas and moved it into place as needed for the panning shot here.

(7) After O'Brien loads his Volcanic Buckshot into his Blaze Cannon Trident and deals 2000 damage to Judai, he starts to explain Trident's role in that, but Judai's betting that there was more to it; O'Brien slides in on a split-screen to say as much as he explains Buckshot's role, but his split-screen's already halfway into the screen in its first before sliding the rest of the way in, and like with #3 above, the border on the split-screen somehow ends up off-center. Fixed these in Vegas by redoing his slide-in so it slides in more fluidly. Then, because of how off-center the split-screen is, as they split apart, O'Brien's side takes longer to slide out; fixed this, after re-centering the split-screen, by redoing their slide-outs to be timed evenly.

(From the Paul fans are insecure anon) You are right I don’t mean all Paul fans are insecure I just meant like. Specifically on tumblr and Reddit Paul fans seem to be really unsure of themselves and their fav (which I think is partially because compared to the others he has a relatively “clean” record, but only because so much time was spent scrutinizing the others so it feels like sort of this dangerous secret to acknowledge Paul wasn’t perfect, like maybe some sort of house of cards will fall or whatever). Like I know many Paul fans IRL who are great and stuff most of my family except my dad is Paul fans and they all always bring up great points and nuance to the convo but in online spaces that just doesn’t exist, if that makes sense.

Like people I know who are avid John fans don’t seem to harass as much in my experience because a lot of them have already been confronted by and been forced to reconcile the flaws John had. Or even eight Ringo Hell, when I go onto beatles related reddits half the posts about ringo will be about how he almost killed Barbara (rightfully so). So like. It’s not that I think Paul fans are delusional or something I just think a lot of them genuinely haven’t been forced to confront Paul’s flaws so when they do see them they get defensive.

But that’s just me psychoanalysis from tumblr and Reddit like again I don’t think all Paul fans are like that in fact most Paul fans IRL are just fine

(Although I will also bring up a gripe that like, when you disparage Paul in my experience I’ve always been forced by others to recognize his importance whereas other Beatles members aren’t treated this way. Like if I was posting about a Eleanor rigby no one would tell me to acknowledge Tomorrow Never Knows, or if they did it would exclusively be to acknowlebe what Paul contributed)

Besides those types of fans, Paul POV is also very interesting to discuss because he was spiraling down hard too during those last years. I actually think that the clash between Paul and George in the 'Get Back' sessions was so evident because they were the only ones taking the project seriously while Ringo was following the flow and John was pretty absent for a while. There are many moments where they were the only ones talking.

Not wanting to talk about Paul's defects cuts an important part of the Beatles story, Paul being controlling didn't break up the Beatles but it was one of the reasons why the other didn't want to have his father in law as a manager. Him and John having double standards for composition credit is one of the reasons why George didn't work with them after. Just like George's cheating habits or John's drug usage are quite relevant for their mood during the 'get back' . Etc.

This poem is about learning the same lessons twice, thrice or even fourth times. Doesn't matter as long as we are still trying to learn. As long as we are alive and growing. As long as it take to learn the lesson of life. As long as you don't give up on life. Chances are infinite, if only you give it to yourself. People tend to give limited/ restricted timeline to their life for whatever reason. Example, I should have marry before turning 30 or I'm 39 why aren't my goals and dream coming true?. The one to accept those as truth is you and only you. You have to make your own choice. This poem talked about making decision for you, no one else. Or else when you have to live a life by that decision, you may find yourself hating the person you made it for. Example, I made a decision to go to college and did medicine, not because I want to but I did it for my parent. That mean the lesson has not been learn and you are living a life not for you. This is the idea where the poem is based on.

We shouldn't judge an outcome from our experienced whether they are successful ones or not so successful. Time for a new outlook, you are afraid to be disappointed like before but you are not the same person as you were. If your goals is abundance, isn't it better to try every ways we can towards it?. Give it its rightful justice by trying many different paths towards it. Trying just one path or one way and called it quit, seem inconclusive.

It is time to start again, with experienced, so we can heal what didn't work out, so we can become more secure in our decision. So we can trust our decision again. We can alway trust our decision, even when it lead us where we didn't want to go. But it will alway lead us where we needed to be. Expand our usual path and see if we can get to our goal a different way. Get yourself to a place where, 'it's okay if it happened and it's okay if it doesn't happen'. The outcome doesn't affect my sense of self. Don't give up on your dreams even if it doesn't work, this time. It just mean you are giving another chance to do it again, differently.

This poem is about accepting 'failures' or things that didn't work out, such as a relationship, a goals, a destination. We all have things that we planned or things that we expected it to be. Like I entered into a business partnership and I expected it to be going well. It is important to focus on the positive side of thing but when it didn't work out like how you hope, which it will alway happened, can you accept it?. Most people find it easy to accept success but find it difficult to accept failures. Which is understandable, however, that won't do because success and failures goes hand in hands and things that didn't work out is part of life or should be part of normal life not an end all be all situation.

This poem is also about giving up. Not in a ‘give up on life' kind of energy buy more of surrendering the outcome to the Divine. If and when you tried your best and it didn't go your way or even when it did, the outcome you want doesn’t serve you anymore. It is alright to give up, it is alright to quit. To change our mind. To change our mind is not alway equating failure. It just mean the things we're going for is no longer in alignment with us anymore. Such as, changing your major halfway through college, changed career path, your goals, your values, your style, etc. These things within us are ever changing. This poem summarisation is that things are ever changing and that it is OKAY. We need to know when enough is enough, with ourself, our goals, our life.

Keep going as you are. Do not stop. Keep your momentum because you will get to where you are headed. Even if it by fears or desperation or anxiety. Still, take your step by step. Concentrated on the positive, what worked out for you not what didn't. You will have a choice to make in regards to your stability and security. In a way, that is what you're going towards. A place where you can make a choice. To be able to choose is a privilege. To be able to choose is empowering. A position where a limited mindset could never be in. 'There's no choice or it is how it is', you know that's not true. That's limited mindset. You alway know that everyone have a choice, they just choose not to have one and blame external circumstances. But when you're in your power and honour yourself, the most empowering choice would be, choosing yourself. Most won't do it, because it's too much to take. But despite your hesitant Pile 3, you are asked to choose yourself and keep going. Start choosing yourself and never stop, because one day, you will reach that inner security you're alway craving. It isn't in any external things, money, status, groups, but within us, there's a voice that have never been heard because we never listen. This poem is about not being negatively bias because human tends to do that. We tend to look for the flaws first, for things that didn't work out. For things that we don't have, for things that's wrong. It's natural to do that but again, Negatively bias brain. Because in reality, it is not as bad as it seem. This poem is to act as a reminder that the Universe is working for me, not against me. There are tree, ocean, sky, beautiful nature all around. As long as you live on this earth and respect it, it will do the same. You are not targeted, you are not the only one feeling pain, no one is out to get you. Can we get presumed dead Eddie after the opening disaster and Chris is already on his way home because he ran away from his grandparents and their or Helena’s infantilization of him? (I know, I know it doesn't make sense, but this is the same kid that caught an Uber to Bucks during a pandemic. Eddie would be that parent who gave Chris a credit card for emergencies or connected his bank account to something. Lol) Buck is trying to get ahold of Chris, but he isn't answering because he is on the plane coming home. Eddie’s parents aren't answering because Buck is calling and/or ignoring when Eddie’s phone calls them or Tia Pepa because they can't find Chris.

how do you reconcile being a feminist, single, and a high-value woman? maybe I'm misunderstanding the concept but I always thought HVW and hypergamy were all very centered on seeking a male partner.

Hi love! Great question. I think your curiosity offers a great opportunity to dive a bit more into my personal views and philosophy.

I believe that the goal of feminism is to protect all women and provide them legal protection, structural resources, and social power to live equitably in society. In my eyes, a high-value woman is one who is unapologetically self-respecting and sets her life up in a way to allows her to work towards goals that meet her needs in all areas of life.

Hypergamy, by its modern definition, is the idea that women "date up" to intertwine their sexual relationships with men to those who offer more or equally high social, financial, or sexual capital to them. The traditional idea of hypergamy was exclusively referred to as "marrying up" as marriage was the only way women could achieve most resources (like a bank account, credit card, housing, and certain medical care – it's so terrifying, honestly).

In the latter case, hypergamy is nearly synonymous with centralizing men. Before women gained certain freedoms (in the U.S. this was mostly in the 1960-70s), centralizing men was a survival mechanism, not a preference or act of self-imposed oppression.

I believe in the modern world where women can have their own bank accounts, careers, and access to birth control (the latter one is an anxiety-inducing topic at this point in time, ugh), women are given the choice to be hypergamous either while centralizing or decentralizing men.

I believe that you can uphold hypergamous standards in your dating life without centralizing men in your life. For me, personally, my relationship or dating status has no bearing on how happy or successful I am in my life. No man (or lack of one in my life) will ever determine my self-worth or reflect my progress in life. My metrics of fulfillment and accomplishment stem from thriving in my professional life, staying in good health, practicing consistently healthy habits (WFPB diet, regular exercise, mental health hygiene, sexual wellness, mindfulness, self-care, etc.), and maintaining nourishing friendships. Dating and my interactions with men (in non-platonic ways) are fun ways I enrich my life, so I believe this mentality embodies the modern – albeit hyper-progressive – definition of hypergamy. Remaining single allows me to enjoy all of the ways men can uplevel my life – socially, financially (to the degree some nighttime activities, such as dinners, drinks, car services, club fees, etc. are paid for – no sugaring activities or anything), and sexually without the aspects of dating men that would contradict my sense of self-respect or autonomy. I'm not personally designed to be a man's therapist or feel like I should have to include a man's needs in all of my life or day-to-day decisions because we're sexually involved with each other. I have a strict vetting process regarding who I will entertain in my dating/sexual life to ensure they're adding value to my life and there's mutual compatibility considering the type of arrangement we're both seeking.

Personally, I believe the only way to maintain equity in dating is to remain single, which allows me to meet all of my other standards in life. I will never sacrifice my life goals for a man, but I do not believe that means you have to approach dating or sexual relationships from a black-and-white perspective. However, if I'm going to date men (which can be a headache for certain), I believe they need to enrich my life in some way – whether that's interesting conversations, gaining business acumen, social relationships, fun sexual experiences, or just learning about different cultures/world perspectives.

From my observations, women who use hypergamy as an excuse to centralize their life or aspirations around a man are glamorizing regressive/oppressive ideologies (like submitting to a partner or relying on men financially) as a last attempt to uphold the patriarchy as women wake up to the fact that having to do all of society's emotional labor plus having to contort ourselves in a world designed for men, namely in our professional lives, is not the truest form of feminism out there (not to mention it's lack of intersectionality, but that's a whole other rant lol). I don't use the "hypergamy" tag on my posts anymore for this reason, though. I believe that many people are conflating the textbook concept of hypergamy with regressive political agendas, which I will never promote let alone subscribe to.

This is all just my take, so I hope it all makes sense and resonates with some members of this amazing community. Every woman should figure out what approaches to all of these matters would make her the most genuinely happy and fulfilled regardless of society's expectations or cultural norms.

The first flower petal Alana coughs up is a bright yellow tansy. She fishes it out of her mouth with trembling fingers and stares at its wet, fragile form. Hostility, she thinks dumbly. A declaration of war.

A small, desperate part of her wonders whether Hannibal, wherever he is, might be suffering the same. Her affliction has taken root because the man she loved was never anything more than a facade.

But his... If he fell ill, Alana wonders, what flowers would bloom first in his fertile lungs? Lavender, perhaps. Or yellow carnation.

She crushes the tansy in her fist and holds her hand out over the edge of her hospital bed.

Hannibal doesn't love you, she tells herself. No version of him ever did.

Maybe one day, it will start to sink in.

She opens her palm and lets the petal fall.

It's not long before the medical staff notices. Alana expected as much, but she hates how they've begun to look at her, with the same pity and gentleness one would show an injured stray.

She starts coughing one morning while a nurse is taking her vitals and can't seem to stop, props herself up on one elbow despite the pain that blossoms in her hips and chokes on a purple sliver of bittersweet.

The nurse tuts when she sees it catch on Alana's lip and lifts it carefully away, turns it over in front of her as though by doing so it might take on some different form.

"My aunt dealt with these," the nurse says, shaking her head. "Truth." She huffs out a humorless laugh. "She couldn't understand why she kept getting them until she found her husband's credit card receipts."

If only it were as simple as adultery, Alana thinks darkly. The nurse pats her shoulder consolingly, and Alana forces a tight-lipped smile. She wonders what truth the bittersweet is meant to call to mind. There are so many lies to untangle that it's nearly impossible to start.

Alana closes her eyes and clears her scratchy throat. She's been dreaming about her residency again, a world where all she knew of Hannibal was that he was beautiful and brilliant and kind. She'd go back there, if she could. Even if just for a single moment.

Alana has treated victims of relationship trauma before, distraught young lovers who sob on her small purple couch. They say they can't understand how this happened, that this person who hurts them is a stranger wearing their partner's skin.

You think it's a nightmare, she tells them sometimes, but this was always what was hidden beneath their facade. You've woken up—you've emerged from that perfect dream. I know that it's hard. But there is no going back. It's gone.

Alana stares at the empty white ceiling and wonders if every therapist has trouble reconciling their own advice.

Chilton lets himself into Alana's room just as she's hacking up the petals of two delicate pink crabapple blossoms, and he doesn't do her the graciousness of letting it go.

He lifts his bouquet in greeting, and the butcher paper and cellophane crinkle with laughter.

"I brought you flowers," Chilton drawls, the good side of his face tugging up in an amused smile, "but it seems I shouldn't have bothered. You've already got your own."

Alana settles back against her pillows and stares up at the ceiling again, refusing to give Chilton the honor of seeing her unsettled. "They come in pieces," she says drily, with a nonchalance she doesn't feel. "It'll be nice to have some in their undamaged form."

Chilton strolls over to the side of Alana's bed and sets the flowers on her bedside table, then gestures at the petals lying on her stark white sheets. "May I?" he asks, already hovering his fingers over their vibrant form.

"Go ahead."

He picks them up at one end and lifts them with evident distaste and curiosity, like a child showing off a decapitated worm. "Hmmm," he muses, "Crabapple blossoms. Rather pedestrian for someone in your circumstance; wouldn't you say?"

"There's a relief to be found in the expected," Alana says. "I've grown tired of surprises. Haven't you?"

Chilton hums and brushes off his fingers, letting the petals flutter to the floor. "How long until you start retching up full blossoms?"

Alana shrugs. "Difficult to say. Eager to be rid of me so soon?"

"Not exactly." Chilton fingers the silver head of his cane. "You got yourself to this garden, Dr. Bloom, but there are ways to... uproot it, so to speak."

Alana turns her head to look at him, attentive for the first time since he stepped foot in her hospital room. "You don't strike me as the charitable type," she says, uncertain of his aim.

Chilton shrugs a shoulder, and his lips twitch into a grin. "The enemy of my enemy..." He taps his cane lightly on the linoleum. "How long, do you think," he asks, "until Will Graham has reentered Hannibal's orbit?"

Alana lifts an eyebrow, and her own lips curl into a hint of a smile. "Not long. And with a little manipulation..."

Chilton hums. They watch each other for a moment, and then Chilton sniffs and makes his way to the door. "Once you're released from medical care," he says, "you know where to find me."

When he leaves, Alana's breath catches, and she coughs again.

This time, she spits out a purple columbine.

The Bishop of Southwark - Fallen London

First impression: ...like many of FL's players, I'm not a great fan of the C of E. The Bishop, though amusing in his mannerisms, didn't quite suit the kind of company I wanted for my hedonistic, unrestrained main.

Impression now: well, at least he doesn't eat people's faces.

Favorite moment: wrestling him at the Labyrinth is priceless.

Idea for a story: pit him against the Regretful Soldier, who also has a thing or two to say about the campaign against Hell.

Unpopular opinion: I think he's more well-meaning than people give him credit for. And in FL, no one is totally clean.

Favorite relationship: I tend to dismiss his card in the Upper River, but his conflict with the Bishop of St. Fiacre certainly has some crunch to it.

Favorite headcanon: I imagine he must've tried to convert some devils, at one point or another. Before adjusting to "making the Good Book better", I mean. You wouldn't try to baptize alien bee people, no. But if you thought they were fallen angels? It's hard to reconcile.

you know on the one hand. I think the projects on @addons that I work on are rather beautiful, that they're full of elegant solutions to interesting problems that I take pride in my contributions to, and I've obviously spent an objectively excessive amount of time on them. which are all things that contribute to them feeling rather substantial to me.

but on the other hand I do occasionally find myself explaining to someone who isn't an xkit user what I spent five hours working on on whatever day it is, and it's always like, well, you know, it does stuff like, uh, it can put an icon next to people's usernames when you follow each other? and, and such. and when I put it that way it sounds like the kind of thing one would code in an afternoon? you know?

(of course it's not actually hard to reconcile these things; I know that we spent the better part of an afternoon figuring out how to make those icons align flawlessly at any zoom and font size in both the post header and blog card modal, and another one making them have tooltips when you mouse over them and ensuring that the tooltips localize into your tumblr UI language. xkit rewritten is kind of like "okay but what if instead of making it like an afternoon hobby project you did it like it was made by the best web developers in the world." turns out that's not that hard when the project owner is in that category and the other dev will spend four hours per PR to kinda look like they are.

also I guess we do pull data out of react internals. that is a pretty significant thing that we do. like I understand where I'm coming from here but we very much do pull data out of react internals. go code that in an afternoon I dare you. disclaimer I can't take any credit for that bit; maybe I'd have figured it out in three years, idk—I don't think it'd have occurred to me to try, is the thing. anyway I did do a fair bit of hooking up to make it faster so that's a thing I guess.)
