Welcome to Covid-Safe Cosplay!
This blog was founded for cosplayers who want to show off their passion and hard work, but can't attend conventions or other cosplay events due to COVID-19 and other accessibility concerns. As fun as cons and fandom are, it's just not worth the risk for plenty of disabled and immunocompromised people, and it feels crappy to be left behind while the rest of the cosplay and fandom world moves on.
Here you will find posts about cosplay, COVID-19 news and advocacy, health and safety, incorporating mobility and other aids into costumes, crafting advice, tutorials, book reviews, and more! If it relates to COVID-19 safety or accessibility in fandom and cosplay, I want to talk about it!
This is also a place to spotlight cosplayers and their hard work! If you have a sweet cosplay to show off but you can't make it to a con, show it off via the submission box or using the tag #CovidSafeCosplay! To those of you masking up for events, or making cool character-themed PPE, we want to see you, too! Let's show the cosplay community that masking for crowded indoor events is still important! Let no disabled cosplayer be left behind!
We also have a Discord server, which you can join at this link!

Crip punk Miku but I decided to join the trend. And what's the most Illinois background? A cornfield.
Anyways. I decided to put together crip punk Miku a while back, on the basis that miku can be anyone and I wanted a comfy cosplay. The original outfit is slightly different, but I decided to use knee braces and socks instead of thigh highs because the change in pressure has been making my knees hurt. The shirt is pretty comfy, and has the signature leek painted on it.
I looked around for a Millikin shirt, because they've got the best choir program in the state, but I think I must have gotten rid of mine. I figured the flannel hi-lo skirt gave it a special flair, plus my cane matches pretty well. The headphones have a faded sunflower sticker on them, for invisible disability. I also went with one of the fuzzy athleisure jackets I see people wearing.
Also. Although it isn't obvious. I have hyperacusis, which has made cosplaying more and more difficult. I like Miku because with her, I can wear the headphones I use to protect my hearing on a day to day basis. I like to think that maybe she developed the same disorder, in the future without music.

It occurred to me that I never posted my new and improved Malevolent Wheelchair AKA Sukuna Bone Throne on here despite it being from EIGHT MONTHS AGO š«
Anyway, I met Ray Chase at CFCC and he was an absolutely lovely person, despite gleefully signing my print with "Let's go k#ll some kids" completely unprompted š¤£

"You don't need a parking badge if you're not in a wheelchair. Your taking it away from someone who actually needs it"
Resident wheelchair user and qualified driver here to tell you that anyone who says this is wrong and and I will personally ram their kneecaps for you š [thumbs up]
The issue is not that the spaces are being "taken away" from people who "actually" need them
The issue is that there's not even enough spaces in the first place
#theres not even enough spaces for the people WITHOUT badges#and this is the hill you choose to die on??#do you have any idea how hard it is to get your disability recognised enough to get those badges???#you think people are cosplaying disability?#putting all that time energy and stress into making people believe them??#but people whove actually 'proven' their need for accommodations are the issue#okay#the level of ignorance you have to have to not only go out of your way to be ableist#but then double down on said ableism despite the other ACTUALLY DISABLED people coming out in troves to tell you youre wrong#is genuinely astounding#I hope your milk suddenly curdles#bastards#disability#ableism#disability accommodations#disabled parking#caps#swearing in tags#wheelchair user

New head canon just dropped: Sanji is extremely near sighted (like completely blind to stuff thatās over a ships length away and blurry if itās more than like. 10 ft) and needs glasses (itās a lot worse in one eye than the other). Used to not wear them bc of being ashamed and feeling like itās a weakness, accepted it during time skip but still doesnāt wear glasses bc itās not like it affects her cooking and it would be inconvenient in combat.
-inspired by me cosplaying Sanji and the half of my face covered is the eye I can fucking see out of. Iām so very blind but confident I could still see well enough to cook so I think she would be too. Let ppl have disabilities in media fr

My roommates just got back from a con in Philadelphia! Callie has always adored The Little Mermaid, and she got the chance to meet Jodi Benson, voice of the animated Ariel!Ā @spark-of-jenius made her an entire costume. She got the sewing pattern, started putting it together, and realized that the pattern was sized wrong and the waist size was TWENTY INCHES off what it was supposed to be! But sheās such a good costumer that she managed to remake the pattern to make it all work and look amazing.
1. Callie with Jodi Benson and our friend ( @spark-of-jeniusā also modified the Elsa costume and made the magic effect sheās holding! More Elsa photos at the bottom of the post.) 2-3. Callie with other Ariels! 4. Wheelchair decor! Also by @spark-of-jeniusā 5. The full dress. Please note the slash-and-puff sleeves! 6. The underskirt. Iridescent fish scales, and a layer of gauzy iridescent bubbles overtop! 7. Lining of the sleeves. She just had to. lol 8. Embellishment 9. Painted and embellished shoes 10. Bejeweled dinglehopper!
More Elsa photos!

wtf is the point of Halloween masks being for everyone if they canāt fit over my glasses.
#is this ableism?#it really bugs me how much cosplay out there is not built for disabilities and people with glasses#random

It often feels like disability is completely invisible to fans, even those that make an effort to be intersectional around other marginalizations. I see people include mobility aids and facial scarring that are not theirs as props in cosplay, and no one bats an eye. I see maskless photos from huge inaccessible convention halls, effectively barring disabled and immunocompromised people from attending. Iām not the fandom police, I donāt want to enforce masks or take peopleās cosplays away, but I would love for disability to be a part of the conversation and for disabled fans to be centered in more physical spaces and online communities.Ā

My costume for Collect-a-Con Orlando was Merlotic AKA PokĆ©mon Gijinka Milotic! This is the first costume Iāve made by hand from scratch in a long time and boy did my neck injury remind me why š« I do have some more improvements in mind for the next time I wear thisā¦possibly Metrocon?
Everyone was so nice, and so many little kids were just like āMERMAID š±šš»šš»šš»ā which definitely made me shift into princess mode LOL

Today i was lying in bed and thought to myself that if i tried really hard I could run for a short distance. I wouldn't be doing well but i could do it. Then I stood up and suddenly i was lying on the floor and well.
#that definitely was a clear answer#got humbled immediately#no running for me i guess#for additional context i was watching a cosplay crossover video of anime x zombies#if the zombie apocalypse happens i will not be runing away#disability#disabled#chronic illness#chronically ill#wheelchair user#ambulatory wheelchair user#cripple punk#tumblr
