Cook.. bake.. we do it all! Although it is difficult enjoying anything in our current situation, Davina and I do love to decorate baked goods together. It's both relaxing and enjoyable, working wonders for our mental health. Davina is turning into a fantastic cook! She hasn't been learning long, but already makes excellent barbecue chicken and she has never burned the biscuits (or the tater tots). Way to go, kiddo! Funny Story: Years ago, I asked her to preheat the oven. She had never done it before, so she texted me and asked how she would know it was on. I told her to clap twice and if the time blinks, it's preheating. Y'ALL! I can't tell you how hard I laughed when I heard her clap! She clapped a few times before she realized I was messing with her. It's a fun joke now. Sometimes she starts cooking and I'm close by, she claps and we laugh. 😂😂😂😂😂 So, what about you - Do you cook at home? Is it relaxing for you and do your mental state some good.. or do you have difficulties with it and it disturbs your mental state on a few levels? Tell me in the comments! #food #MentalHealth #CookingforMentalHealth #CookingTherapy #BakingTherapy https://instagr.am/p/CtwHBBdtrnX/

Day 288
We started the first day of the new year off right: French Toast with the leftover challah.
I had to take the tree down today and pack up all the ornaments. I can’t bear holidays that begin too early (Christmas lights in October) and drag on too long (Christmas lights in February). So down it all came. As I was packing up the precious ornaments - many that date back to when I was a child - I was thinking about how special it is to take these ornaments out, threading the memories together, year after year. This year, when I thought that it was only I who cares and notices the sweetness of these ornaments, Ethan - who is 16 - wondered aloud where the clown with the little green ball is. I had put up all the ornaments myself that day and I left that particular one in its box only because the hook was missing. But when Ethan asked about it, we both went to the lower level, dug around in the holiday box, and found it. “We can put it here, in this little stocking.” And he stuck the clown with the little green ball inside a miniature stocking that has Ethan’s name stitched across the top. There. Now that was up on the tree, too. The ornaments also matter to my kids, I happily realized.
And now they are all packed away and the house is a little less festive. We’re returning to our quiet state of affairs, and packing away another beautiful holiday. Different than all others we’ve had before, quieter, simpler, but still very memorable and beautiful. This Christmas will be remembered by the holiday we still created, the joy we still felt in being together, the special food we still made, how we still created Christmas, despite not being with extended family.
For the second day in a row, I took a bath. Not my usual routine, but I was gifted a box of bath bombs from Gabriel on Christmas morning. Early afternoon, I lit a candle, turned off the lights in the bathroom, and started a bath. It feels like something I would only do with lots of time to spare, and I’m still on holiday for two more days.
Teatime was a delight: enough blackberry pie left for one piece each. An interesting addition to this pie which I’d never used before - tapioca pearls. The recipe called for tapioca starch. I only had the pearls, but they melted in the bubbly fruit while baking, creating a dense interior.
I almost didn’t make dinner. But, we were all hungry around seven-ish, and Gabriel was hanging around the kitchen, so I roped him in and together we made Pasta Puttanesca, with olives, garlic, capers, anchovies, and red pepper flakes. We ate it with our friend’s homemade bread. I love that Gabe helped me make this.
After dinner, I became utterly absorbed in a very long story by Ann Patchett in Harper’s, recommended by Sam Sifton, and now I’m recommending it here.
Finally, Billy and I got our walk in.
A full and beautiful beginning.

Day 276
Tough day. I yelled and I hate it when I yell. It makes me feel terrible, it makes me feel utterly inadequate, and it makes me so aware that whatever it is that made me yell is completely unimportant in the larger scheme of things.
I yelled at Gabriel for pushing back when I told him he was up for vacuuming. He wanted to keep playing on the x-box and it infuriated me. And I yelled at Ethan when I took a look at his grades. Somehow, Ethan manages to get his GPA up at the final midnight hour, but the process leading up to getting his work done is excruciating, as Billy put it.
Right now, I’m sitting next to him with my computer at the dining room table. We both are nibbling on sesame crackers and I’m sipping a glass of red wine. It’s mellowing my mood. Ethan is completing assignments.
A fabulous aroma is coming from the kitchen. Tonight we are having pork. A long time ago I clipped a Marcella Hazan recipe out of a magazine and stuck it in my wooden recipe box. I actually remember the last time I made it - we lived in Serbia, my friend Michael was visiting from London, and my children were four and six years old. So, ten years ago? This is a recipe for pork loin, boiled in milk and simmered on the stove for about two hours. The pork is browned first in butter and olive oil (2 tablespoons each), then covered in salt and lots of freshly ground black pepper. Two and a half cups of milk is poured over the pork. The milk boils, the pan is partially covered, and it simmers until all that’s left in the bottom of the pan is little curdles of flavor, and the pork smells delicious. Her recipe has no other flavorings, so I added bay leaves and whole cloves of garlic. I’ll make a simple gravy with my chicken stock and a bit of flour.
Tonight I showed Gabe how to make the roasted potatoes. That was his job, and he did it when I asked him to, without complaining. Did my yelling earlier help? Maybe! But I still feel badly. Oh well. It’s over. We’re all in a better, calmer place. I’m now looking forward to our meal together. We’ll light candles, as we always do, and say our blessing: “May we have eyes that see, hearts that love, and hands that are willing to serve.”
