Why are people even having a meltdown about the rankings Lmaoo. They shouldn’t even be there in the first place and plus I don’t even think Katsuki cares. Partly because I truly believe he’s grown past his obsession with the rankings and has a different benchmark for being the ‘best’ and partly cuz Deku wasn’t there competing with him. Pretty sure he spent all his down time obsessing, planning and plotting and saving every penny for that suit

I've seen this "Bakugou won't compete unless Deku is there" kind of take become popular and I have to say, I don't find it convincing.

Bakugou's first redeeming quality revealed at the Sport Festival is how seriously he takes each and every opponent he faces, how he always goes for the maximum, how he always gives his best, how he feels it's utter disrespect not to do the same.

Are you telling me that Mirio, who saved his life is not worth the effort? That he won't show respect to Mt Lady and Kamui Woods? That he'd half-ass it against Todoroki after he spent months begrudging Shouto for half-assing the finals?

To me, that sounds really out of character. Not because of an obsession with the rankings (a la Endeavor), but because the Bakugou I know does not know the meaning of the words "hold back" and would show his respect by giving it his all.

I think it's perfectly plausible he wouldn't be No 1 immediately, what more, I think it is good for his character if he (relatively) struggles (I mean the guy is comfortably Top 10 obviously).

There are many plausible reasons - his arm is still not 100%, there are not so many large-scale fights for him to really stand out (everyone can catch thieves), his quirk is not the best suited to large-scale rescue/disaster scenarios, things from his past can come back (the SF restraint, the kidnapping, but once he becomes a celebrity, it wouldn't be odd to see his MS class mates spill the beans on his bully behavior), he has rough manners and an explosive temper that work against him.

Let him be bad at public relations, and understand and continue to learn the value of intangibles that Mirio has (like being well-spoken, reassuring, funny, likeable) and continue to better himself.

To me, that was always the essence of Bakugou - how he learnt to recognize his own weaknesses and kept at fixing them until he overcame them. I'm sure he'll get to No 1 at some point, but I think it's more interesting if he keeps bumping into walls to overcome, if he has tough competition (not just Deku, but really everyone at that level) and he keeps striving for his goal with all that he's got.

hot take, Ricky is knowledge without wisdom; but also there to show who Lindy is even when she's not being racist.

Ricky was only just stepping up when we meet him. We know one of the earliest people to die was over a week ago, and Ricky was trying to warn people - but his videos about it kept being deleted. Fair enough, it makes sense to try videos so you can warn everyone at once.

But what has he been doing since then? Lindy seems to be the first person he's helped - possibly because people had the bubble up, but he doesn't indicate he's tried anything other than the videos.

He knew about the conduits, how to contact the homeworld, pulse codes, the history of the planet (so possibly even information about the slugs) - but he didn't apply any of it. What good did knowing things do him when the facts just sat there? Everyone knows who he is, so he could have messaged pretty much anyone to try and tell them directly - which is what the Doctor did - but he didn't.

He might be less terrible than Lindy as he doesn't spend all day in the bubble, but he's still a product of the society that raised him.

Lindy trusts him immediately because he's One Of Them and he's also got clout and status - she's more co-operative with Ruby, sure; but she's incredibly rude to her at first and doesn't trust her. As soon as she sees Ricky, she's excited and nice to him - but she said to him that this was the best day of her life. He pointed out that thousands of people are still dying, and she brushes it off because that's just not important to her.

She expresses worry for her friends - or so it seems. I'd argue that actually, she only cares about them as it would mean she doesn't have anyone to talk to. We're shown exactly who she is when the dot comes after her, and she throws Ricky to the wolves to save herself. She loves him, he's famous and handsome and everything he's meant to be - he saved her and helped her, he is One Of Them. And she kills him.

She is completely convinced of her own superiority, and she's utterly self-centred. They all seem to be. They meet a new guy at the end and his first concern is who should be their leader (and he immediately suggests himself). They scoff at the doctor trying to help them; and after working two hours per day and complaining about being required to do literally anything, they think they can fend for themselves in the wilderness?

These people will Lord of the Flies each other inside of a week, and they won't even blink. She's just killed a huge celebrity (the only thing she responds to in any way) and lies to everyone about it without any feelings. She's not guilty. She's not sad.

They're all on the boat and going to die, sure. But it's not going to be the wilderness that does it.

It's gonna be a looong time before we stop noticing more details here

Yeah, it felt really weird in the moment how Doctor-like Ricky wound up being, and while of course he already has that reputation as a celeb, at the same time we can see first-hand that Lindy is a lot more cooperative with Ruby anyway

kinda thinking about neil's gunshot and how we don't hear it. totally silent. it reminds of the "if a tree falls in the woods" question. neil dying alone in the middle of his father's study.

and it's such a loud weapon, too, which makes it seem all the more intentional that it was cut out. in his last moments he went out with a bang, but nearly no one hears it.

even before the night of the play: his friends and keating independently told him to just talk, and perhaps he'll get what he wants — but he knows that's impossible. no one else truly understood. they didn't really hear him.

just like rebelling against his father to be in the play: did it matter if he was found out anyway? he knew when he was caught that it was over no matter what. does his death mean anything if the only one to hear the shot was the very same man who controlled every aspect of his life?

if neil falls and no one is around to hear the gunshot, did he contribute a verse?
