k but if u haven’t seen the guy ritchie sherlock films u don’t get it but they fully wrote holmes as in love w watson. like undeniably in love. In the first ten mins holmes refuses to take a Single case for three months bc watson won’t go with him. he locks himself in his room for two straight weeks, drugs the dog, and shoots the wall for attention bc watson is moving out. he says the world outside his room has nothing to offer until watson asks him to go to dinner & immediately agrees. he humiliates mary bc he’s jealous she can marry watson and he can’t. he goes to a fight club to Feel Something bc he knows john is slipping away from him. there’s never any “oh well just bros being bros” the whole tone towards it is just “ofc he’s in love w watson that’s one of his defining character traits”

So there's gossip about some version of kinktober over on twitter adding a bunch of nonsensical rules this year, and I am fascinated. Studying this like a bug.

Super depends on the context of the story. Like, if the villain in question is also committing violent murders, I know I'm reading an adult story and this person isn't exactly going to be calling the other characters a "big weenie". Tagging like "oh and also they use slurs they can't reclaim" seems pretty redundant at that point. Or if the text also deals with an historical period or general context where people would be throwing slurs around, I think tagging every possible element which could upset people is not a realistic expectation. (Old fandom "don't like don't read" would apply).

I can see how seeing something unexpectedly might upset people, especially if it's really out of left field with the tone and content of the story. I think it would be polite to tag that, especially if you're using the slur(s) as a shorthand to show the villain's evilness.

That said, do we go into every film or tv show or book expecting to have a warning for every possible specific slur? No. I think a general "strong language some viewers/readers may find upsetting" is more than sufficient. Just because fanfic CAN be tagged that way I wouldn't say means everything SHOULD be tagged in a granular way. If the author tagged something along the lines above, then imo you DID get a warning.

Your feelings are valid but they're your feelings to deal with, not a failing on the part of the writer.

*Slur in this case refers to a taboo word used in a derogatory way, especially by a a character who cannot reclaim the word.

Example that prompted this poll: A villain character used the r-slur to insult a sympathetic character. The speaking character did not belong to/identify with any group originally targeted by the slur. The slur was not warned/tagged.

**Fanfic specifically because of the tagging system offered by AO3, rather than general published fiction which carries little to no expectation of content warnings.

iirc his son was diagnosed with a serious illness when he was young, and RFK Jr said that other parents started coming up to him at events and telling him that his son was made ill due to vaccines. I don't remember what he was diagnosed with - I think it might be a severe peanut allergy? - but ultimately Kennedy was looking for answers that science and medicine couldn't provide. I think it helps people to feel like they're in control of what happens to them by refusing to eat certain foods, choosing not to buy plastics, not getting your children vaccinated - then you feel like whatever happens, good or bad, it was all within your locus of control.

It's not true, of course. But it makes people feel better. Sometimes we just don't get answers for things, and that's so hard for most people to accept.
