October 31, 2018.
Your company halloween party isn’t all that fun when you think about it.
The optional suggestion from HR to wear a costume has always been promptly ignored for as long as you can remember, pressed suits in dark neutrals coloring the celebration instead. Nothing exciting about it at all.
It used to be though, when you had Nanami to spend it with.
Liquid pools by the sides of your fingertips, condensation dripping down your glass of bourbon. One of the perks of being in a financial firm’s halloween party is that the alcohol is good, expensive to match the tastes and budget the partners can afford.
Calling it a party is overhyping it, if you’re being honest. It’s just another day at work, except without the alcohol restrictions; your coworkers still check the markets every five minutes (you do too, out of habit), and directors still ask for summary reports while attending to a phone call or two—one hand on a tablet and another on a drink, earbud slotted securely in one ear.
You and Nanami used to hide, even just for a few minutes, by the break room at the back, inside the pantry—a place now foreign but still filled with all your memories; you haven’t stepped foot in it since he broke it off.
It's a common notion amongst your peers that workplace romance is dead—it always has been (at least, outwardly). HR would have cut either of you out of the next payment cycle if they had caught wind of your mingling.
Workplace romance is dead, they say, but what you had with Nanami was alive, beating with every giggle muffled by the palm of your hand. No one would ever consider him a funny guy, but you did—all his snide remarks, comments unapologetically deadpan in a way so bluntly his.
The gray curtain separating you two from the rest of the office kitchen was thin, but it held every weighted moment you snuck with him—secret confessions a little before midnight, a hand or two you couldn’t possibly resist, sobs hushed down, bitten between your teeth with you tucked into him.
Workplace romance is dead—it’s supposed to be, but a few desks down and a sharp left turn from yours, it haunts you, still.
You take a sip.
.
Nanami has a sense for these things.
It’s always when something doesn’t feel right that the numbers start to click.
Clusters of sorcerers have been grouped to surround the vicinity, his own trio comprising of himself, Fushiguro, and Ino. The instructions are simple: to be on standby in case anything happens. The wait time should be a good sign; it’s highly unlikely that anyone can match up to Gojo, after all.
He checks his watch, each second ticking agonizingly slowly. It feels unsettling, like the calm before the storm—a deep unrest simmering. Unsafe is the first thought that comes to mind, then you second; it prompts him to call you, his fingers slightly trembling.
Your contact is still marked with a star, filed under his favorites (he knows he probably should have moved it).
One ring. Two rings. Three. A ‘toot’ at the end of the line—it makes him antsy.
Then, the veils go down.
The action is alarming; these opponents move themselves like chess pieces, he knows this much—all part of a bigger plan, always with an underlying motive.
His thumb hovers over the call button again, thinking. The expression on his face remains impassive, sharp angles and straight lines concealing the weight of each worry.
“Nanami-san,” Ino calls.
Fushiguro’s already started theorizing, rationalizing some sort of ploy behind this occurrence—all highly plausible, all probably true; it’s some sick play that the moment the calculations click, there isn’t enough time to call you.
“That’s why we’ve stopped standing by and started to act,” Nanami interjects, shrugging off his blazer, khaki cotton falling off his shoulders as he slips his phone in his pant pocket.
.
If anything, you should probably do your best to enjoy whatever you can from this year’s Halloween party—after all, it’ll be your last in this company. You handed in your resignation papers last week, and though your boss has pulled you aside for the nth time tonight, disguising pleas as empty promises, you know better than to believe it.
It doesn’t matter to you anymore; you’ve made up your mind.
The bartender mixes you another drink: 2 ounces of bourbon for a ball of ice, the same one you’ve been having the entire night.
A White Russian is your usual pick—a spiked latte as you call it. Nanami’s claimed that Bourbon On The Rocks is like its older, more mature cousin, and you’re afraid he’s right. He always is.
The hints of vanilla and caramel remind you of your morning pick-me-up, part because of the drink and part because of the man you used to spend it with.
Your phone vibrates from your inner pocket, but you don’t feel it, the alcohol dulling your senses.
.
“Na-na-na-na-na-na-min!”
For this reason, he thinks, it’s good that the nickname has stuck; a perfect identifier for whom and where it’s coming from.
Echoes of Itadori’s voice lead them straight to a rooftop, Fushiguro catching the boy’s attention to ask for the run-down. Mechamaru warns that it’s pandemonium deep within the station, curses of all grades mixed with scattered transfigured humans. There’s only one thing he knows can be responsible for that.
Nanami doesn’t do jokes, but he secretly wishes this is just a really bad one, because—
Gojo’s been sealed.
—the punch line isn’t funny at all.
Sorcery has prepared Nanami for anything, but this possibility lies in his 0.01%—if this has happened, it’s free game.
It makes sense now, why this unease has slowly been surfacing.
Keep people safe and survive—the single thought at the forefront of his mind.
He moves quickly, devising a plan for maximum efficiency; Ino is to stay with Fushiguro and Itadori inside this veil while he meets up with Ijichi to put down the other one. Time is running short, options even more so—there are only a handful of people who can do certain requests and being a first-grade qualifies him as one of them.
Eerie silence greets him as he steps out on the sidewalk, the streets practically swept. It’s instinct when his hand reaches in his pant pocket, fingers moving in memorized pattern as he calls you again.
You don’t pick up for the second time.
.
One of your co-workers almost trips down the steps to the taxi, your arm stretched out to catch her should she fall forward completely. Cool air nips at your cheeks; you’ve had more to drink but you handle liquor well—if managing to keep up with Nanami means anything.
The vibrations of your phone get lost in the commotion. You haul your co-worker into the cab and tell the driver her address, asking if he can drive you to yours soon after.
.
It’s shit.
Climbing up the steps to the overpass fills him with a sense of foreboding. A sickening dread. On the way here, he spotted four managers, dead.
The sight before him angers him more than anything—blood pooling around Ijichi’s frame, crumpled on the ground. He steps closer, crouching low to check for a pulse; it’s faint, but it’s there, accompanying the man’s shallow breathing.
He does quick work bringing Ijichi to the rescue team, hopefully fast enough to make it back to Shoko where she can fix him.
The casualties are rising.
It isn’t safe anymore. The radius of collateral damage is widening and this is just the beginning.
What will happen to you? If the events in here break containment?
How can he keep you safe if jujutsu society falls?
He crunches the numbers, sorting through each possibility; the phone in his pocket feels heavy, sinking with each step he takes on concrete. It’s not often that Nanami runs out of options—there’s always an answer to anything; but this, he thinks, has never made him feel more desperate.
His fingers hover over your contact again.
There’s not enough time—this is the only way.
He needs to get you out of here.
You’re left with a voicemail.
The key slips from your hand, falling to the ground again, like the many times it has before. You step inside your apartment, swiping through your notifications to find two missed calls and an email.
It’s confusing enough getting calls from the ex you drunk dial once a week; receiving a flight notice set to depart later tonight with a ticket under your name doesn’t make things any clearer.
You tap your screen, odd anticipation and nerves coiling in your belly.
“Hello,” the audio starts, “I’m assuming you received the email.”
His voice sounds different when you’re a little more sober; you’re not sure if that’s a good thing—if it’s worse or better, just that it aches the more you hear him clearly. You kick off your heels, letting the audio play as you pour yourself a glass of water.
Your ticket details stare at you from your screen.
(Shouting isn’t a quiet man’s usual and his throat hurts from the overexhaustion. His voice echoes across the sea, calling for everyone to hurry over. There’s only so much Fushiguro can take from beside him, holding open the simple domain for everyone to slip through simultaneously.
He supposes, this isn’t the first time he’s done something out of character today—moving your flight and hoping you get on it is the most reckless thing he’s ever done.)
“I’m sorry this is so sudden, I understand if you’re confused. I know most of our conversations have been unideal lately.”
Metal clinks in the recording, a sound so familiar to you—the links of his watch band hitting. Nanami has a habit of shaking his wrist when he’s uneasy about something, and you can almost hear it from the small breaths he takes before each sentence.
It should embarrass you, the amount of times you’ve drunk-called him, but you have reason to believe he doesn’t find it all that off-putting.
(He wonders if he’ll get another chance to sit through one more unideal conversation with you.
Blood drips down the side of his head, his shoulder slashed through his shirt. Adrenaline moves every muscle he barely has the energy to.)
“Do you… do you remember that vacation we planned?” he breathes out from the other end, a hesitancy uncommonly heard from him, “To Kuantan?”
You do, very vividly—a trip discussed some time ago with your head on his chest, scrolling through flight promos on your phone. Nanami’s dream has always been to be free by the sea; you don’t expect it from a man turned jaded, but it feels like a secret spoken truthfully.
So you take it and run, booking a flight two years down the line—a ‘when we have the time’ flexible enough to move and transfer whenever either of you would like.
(In a flash, he’s flushed along with the current, waves engulfing him as he’s washed out of the domain.)
“I’ve thought about it and believe now would be a good time,” his voice continues, “with your resignation and things. ”
The spray sunblock on your dresser is barely used, but you grab it knowingly. Nanami is pale and—
(—when he burns, he thinks of the Kuantan sun—how nice it would be to be under it, bathed in the deep orange afterglow next to you.)
“I…” Nanami rarely stutters, but you hear a slight shake to his timbre, “I know this is a tough ask, especially when I’ve been unfair to you. But…”
You can picture him clearly—hand running through his hair as he adjusts his lenses; he pinches the bridge of his nose before shaking his wrist, that familiar metal clinking.
It almost sounds pained, his acknowledgment of it, as if he’s long since regretted treating you any less than you deserve. Does it make you stupid? Or sad? That you still hang on to every word he says, that the spaces between your fingers still miss the way he used to fill them.
You drag the zipper of your bag shut, patting it down to flatten.
“...I hope you know the reason I left isn’t because of something you did.”
The Nanami you know speaks nothing but the truth, and you believe him each time.
It’s a contradicting mix of comfort and anxiety, like he’s freed you from the guilt that used to weigh on you heavily. If it isn’t because of you though, you don’t know what else it could be.
You sigh, pushing down on the door handle as you take one last look to make sure you didn’t leave anything.
(It’s a lie when he tells himself he can’t feel anything; the left side of his body is burned, charred down to his sinews—it's a surprise he can still move. The damage should have been enough to numb him, but it still hurts when he thinks of you.
Did you receive his voicemail? Are you on your way now?
Time moves slowly as he drags his feet across the station floor.)
“I’ll… explain myself more when I see you in a few hours.”
Your stomach starts feeling funny when you get in the taxi—the pauses in his recording are obvious.
You wonder what’s going on in his head.
(This is cruel, he knows, concealing the truth and feeding you false hope. He’s a liar, but there’s no other way. There’s no time to explain everything to you.
If this is what gets you out of here—)
Silence.
You hear his footsteps through the recording, the sound of his feet shuffling, contemplating.
He speaks again, hesitancy tinged with sadness you can’t decipher, “I apologize, if this is out of nowhere,” a  breath, “but I hope I was good to you in the time we had.”
You shift in your seat, fiddling with your fingers. There’s a finality to his tone that you find oddly misplaced—the sound of a goodbye more than a second try.
It is wholly unlike him to be this sentimental.
Tears well up in your lash line as you think back to everything: how he used to wait for you after work despite it being past midnight, how weekends were filled with nothing but love, massaged into the soles of your feet; how he’d buy your favorite breakfast sandwich even though he’s a snob about the ingredients in it. He drove you anywhere as long as you had music control.
Nanami is an old soul, and you indulged him by buying records for that vintage record player he has. Songs from the 50’s, 60’s, maybe a bit of jazz from the 70’s and 80’s too—for a man so stiff, he sways smoothly to its melodies, holding you closely each time.
He has only ever touched you gently, attentive to every need you express lovingly; his kisses always form a line straight to your heart—from the top of your head to your forehead, down between your eyebrows to the slope of your nose. His lips are soft against yours, ticklish as they drag down your neck to your collarbones.
A patient and tender lover, the most wonderful man for the greatest years of your life.
He was more than good to you—you couldn’t have asked for any better.
(A mess of curses greet him on the floor—transfigured humans he has no choice but to take the lives of.
He’s exhausted.
His blade swooshes to the right, body following the path it glides to. He allows himself a glimpse of rest, to think of how it must feel to dance by the glistening seaside with you.)
“You were the best thing to happen to me in that shitty place.”
His honesty rings loudly in your ears, resounding even as you pull up your luggage to the check-in counter.
Oftentimes, Nanami would say things and they’d sound a lot like ‘I love you’.
“I hope I can be good to you now, too.”
(Saying it would have been selfish—it’s good he didn’t, even though he wanted to. Those 3 words mean nothing if there’s no guarantee he’ll be alive to prove it to you.
A hand presses against his back; a crack in his soul.)
“The details are in the email, I’ll be there when you land.” he pauses; it takes a beat before he continues again, “See you then.”
You’re half-nervous and half-excited as you board the plane. The voicemail sounds suspicious, his actions even moreso, but if what he’s saying is true—
(It flashes before him, too fast and too slow; Haibara smiling, the life he couldn’t save. Yuuji calling him from the corner, a ‘Nanamin’ one last time.
Then there’s you. Just as he’s about to give in to it all—the beach. How pretty you’d look, beaming up at him, pointing towards the sun as it sets into the endless sea.)
“Don’t forget to turn off the lights.” he says softly, like a reminder to be cradled safely.
You settle into your seat, the captain speaking over the announcement system.
“Flight MH 1730 to Kuantan, Malaysia from Tokyo, Japan. Departure time is 11:16 p.m. Estimated arrival…”
—you can’t wait.
(At least he’ll get to save your life, right?
Nanami Kento. Time of death: 11:17 p.m.)

a/n: writing this was really tough (because it absolutely gutted me), but it was a good challenge! a few info bits: partners = high ranking roles in the company; white russian = vodka, coffee liqueur, & cream + ice; the flight details are not real; the pov switching is real time, except for the voicemail, which acts as a voiceover to the events concurring between nanami and you.
thank you notes: to @augustinewrites OF COURSE. what would i do without you fr. this has plagued us for the longest time and we have been way too sad for too damn long bc of it 😭 thank you for half-mothering this, where would i be without your sad songs 🥹 + @mysugu and @soumies for running through this idea & the voicemail dialogue with me 🥺 very important opinions from very important people indeed 🥺 + @stellamancer for helping me with my grammar doubts 😭

woof juicy news day for us pens fans. not only do we have sidney crosby’s Seduction of kyle dubas, now we have this article on Why Hextall Sucks (and how he pissed off even sidney crosby) + some angsty Geno details that i will only relish now that he’s still with us:
Early last summer, at his spacious home in Montreal, Kris Letang finally saw the document that secured his future in Pittsburgh.
No stranger to the multi-page, standard player contract, this one was particularly special. It was his fourth, and probably his last. It contained specific elements Letang and his agent required. One line read “six years.” Another read “$36.6 million.” The line that Letang really loved?: full no-movement clause.”
Together, those words recommitted Letang and the Penguins, the only NHL franchise he had ever known. At 35, he would finish his career in Pittsburgh.
As word spread last July 7, Letang’s phone blew up. The flood of well-wishers included teammates past and present, various Penguins personnel he’d befriended over his previous 16 seasons, and family and friends. He took only a few calls. Among them: Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin, his oldest and dearest teammates in Pittsburgh, who were thrilled for him.
Crosby, the Penguins captain and franchise icon, had made it clear to general manager Ron Hextall and president of hockey operations Brian Burke as far back as the 2021 offseason that he wanted the team to re-sign impending free agents Letang and Malkin so the three veterans and lifetime Penguins could take another shot at a Stanley Cup together.
Would Crosby pressure ownership to sign Malkin and Letang? “I’ve never wanted to be GM,” Crosby said. “I think they know how I feel.”
While the negotiations with Letang took longer and were more difficult than expected, Hextall’s discussions with Malkin had turned dark. Only days before the start of free agency last summer, Letang, Crosby and coach Mike Sullivan worked overtime trying to calm Malkin, who was stewing over lowball early contract offers, limited communication with Hextall and veiled public shots from Burke.
“How bad is it?” Letang asked Crosby about the state of Malkin’s emotions and the negotiations.
“Pretty bad,” Crosby said.
Hextall first irritated Malkin late in the 2021-22 season by offering a short-term contract extension to his agent, J.P. Barry. In the offseason that animosity built as weeks passed without a follow-up conversation from Hextall. On June 17, Hextall told Barry that the team’s offer was “take-it-or-leave-it,” and the next day Burke used those words to characterize the negotiations during multiple media interviews. Not surprisingly, Malkin, a sure Hall-of-Famer, went from annoyed to insulted.
For weeks leading up to and after Letang’s deal was finalized, Malkin stewed at home while Crosby, Letang and Sullivan checked in with him from afar. With no deal in sight, Malkin began speaking to his small inner circle as if his time with the Penguins was concluding.
Hextall fielded daily questions from Fenway Sports Group brass about why Malkin hadn’t yet been re-signed. Hextall was also taken aback by the barrage of calls and texts — from Penguins alternate governor Dave Beeston, from Crosby and Sullivan, from president of business operations Kevin Acklin — after reports surfaced that Malkin would test free agency. He told his agent he wanted to “show Hextall and Burke” by trying the open market.
Malkin had joked during the ’21-22 season that he was “a rich guy,” insisting he didn’t need to worry about money on his next contract. He was having a laugh, but was also somewhat serious. He had taken less than market value on two previous deals with the Penguins and expected that trend to continue on his final NHL contract.
He was about to turn 36. He wanted to play until he was 40. He sought a contract with a no-trade clause. But more than money, he needed the Penguins to show they really wanted him, something he felt was lacking, especially from Hextall. By July 11, 2022, Malkin was convinced he’d already practiced in Cranberry for the last time.
After tucking in their son, Nikita, Malkin and his wife, Anna, sat on their leather couch and looked at a summary sheet of Hextall’s latest offer: four seasons, $24.4 million total, a full no-movement clause.
Malkin was fine with what he read. The sticking point was his bruised feelings.
“They not think I good player,” Malkin wrote in a text message to Crosby.
“They not want me,” Malkin texted to Letang, who had stepped up efforts to console Malkin after signing his deal.
Malkin wanted to stay in Pittsburgh, but he no longer trusted either Hextall or Burke. Crosby and Sullivan intervened. Each spent hours on the phone with Malkin as July 11 became July 12. Careful not to tell him what to do, Crosby and Sullivan implored Malkin to “not worry about those guys” — Hextall and Burke — when making a final decision. Letang, too, jumped into the mix. Together, two-thirds of the Big Three and their coach brought up every special moment, funny story and great time they could remember to remind Malkin what they had built in Pittsburgh. Malkin paced from room to room at his condo in Fisher Island, finally beginning to feel wanted again.
As early morning shifted to late afternoon, Malkin had heard enough to make a decision. He called his agent, Barry, with instructions to re-engage with Hextall and take the offer. Upon calling, Barry was surprised to find a receptive Hextall.
After hanging up with Barry, Hextall bragged to his assistant GM, Chris Pryor, and a handful of staffers, that he “got him on my terms — that’s how you negotiate.” Malkin informed Crosby, Letang and Sullivan that he was staying. When talking to Crosby and Letang, Malkin sounded happy for the first time in a long time.
“We win next year,” Malkin told his friends. “Big year get back Cup.”
also these bits 🥺
After McGinn was put on waivers, he played a memorable final game with the Penguins, blocking shots and setting up Crosby for a dramatic tying goal in the third period. In the locker room afterward, his soon-to-be-former teammates named him player of the game, eliciting a massive roar from the group that could be heard through closed doors.
Hextall traded Teddy Blueger during the same trip. In the middle of a dinner with the players’ fathers, arranged by Crosby at Bern’s Steakhouse in Tampa, Blueger learned via social media that he had been dealt to Vegas. He and his dad abruptly left the restaurant. Crosby rushed to console his now former teammate and after a few minutes returned to the dinner. “That’s not how we do things in Pittsburgh,” he said. Crosby remained mostly quiet the rest of the night.
…Long after most of their teammates had left the locker room after the demoralizing 5-2 defeat, the Big Three remained.
Malkin was emotional, his voice rising as he spoke. He had been dreaming of his beloved parents, Natalia and Vladimir, returning to Pittsburgh for another postseason run. Instead, they’d stay in Russia.
Letang, in the adjacent corner of the room, spoke thoughtfully and contemplatively. He had been through hell and back all season, and the Penguins’ loss was another blow.
Then there was Crosby, who sits at the center of an arc of connected lockers. The Penguins captain, with gray hairs that seemed to grow more plentiful throughout the season, sat stoically. After finishing interviews, Crosby sat by himself, staring straight ahead before slowly walking out of the locker room.
sorry need to add the header too because i would totally watch this telenovella

"In the age of smart fridges, connected egg crates, and casino fish tanks doubling as entry points for hackers, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that sex toys have joined the Internet of Things (IoT) party.
But not all parties are fun, and this one comes with a hefty dose of risk: data breaches, psychological harm, and even physical danger.
Let’s dig into why your Bluetooth-enabled intimacy gadget might be your most vulnerable possession — and not in the way you think.
The lure of remote-controlled intimacy gadgets isn’t hard to understand. Whether you’re in a long-distance relationship or just like the convenience, these devices have taken the market by storm.
According to a 2023 study commissioned by the U.K.’s Department for Science, Innovation, and Technology (DSIT), these toys are some of the most vulnerable consumer IoT products.
And while a vibrating smart egg or a remotely controlled chastity belt might sound futuristic, the risks involved are decidedly dystopian.
Forbes’ Davey Winder flagged the issue four years ago when hackers locked users into a chastity device, demanding a ransom to unlock it.
Fast forward to now, and the warnings are louder than ever. Researchers led by Dr. Mark Cote found multiple vulnerabilities in these devices, primarily those relying on Bluetooth connectivity.
Alarmingly, many of these connections lack encryption, leaving the door wide open for malicious third parties.
If you’re picturing some low-stakes prank involving vibrating gadgets going haywire, think again. The risks are far graver.
According to the DSIT report, hackers could potentially inflict physical harm by overheating a device or locking it indefinitely. Meanwhile, the psychological harm could stem from sensitive data — yes, that kind of data — being exposed or exploited.
A TechCrunch exposé revealed that a security researcher breached a chastity device’s database containing over 10,000 users’ information. That was back in June, and the manufacturer still hasn’t addressed the issue.
In another incident, users of the CellMate connected chastity belt reported hackers demanding $750 in bitcoin to unlock devices. Fortunately, one man who spoke to Vice hadn’t been wearing his when the attack happened. Small mercies, right?
These aren’t isolated events. Standard Innovation Corp., the maker of the We-Vibe toy, settled for $3.75 million in 2017 after it was discovered the device was collecting intimate data without user consent.
A sex toy with a camera was hacked the same year, granting outsiders access to its live feed.
And let’s not forget: IoT toys are multiplying faster than anyone can track, with websites like Internet of Dongs monitoring the surge.
If the thought of a connected chastity belt being hacked makes you uneasy, consider this: sex toys are just a small piece of the IoT puzzle.
There are an estimated 17 billion connected devices worldwide, ranging from light bulbs to fitness trackers — and, oddly, smart egg crates.
Yet, as Microsoft’s 2022 Digital Defense Report points out, IoT security is lagging far behind its software and hardware counterparts.
Hackers are opportunistic. If there’s a way in, they’ll find it. Case in point: a casino lost sensitive customer data after bad actors accessed its network through smart sensors in a fish tank.
If a fish tank isn’t safe, why would we expect a vibrating gadget to be?
Here’s where the frustration kicks in: these vulnerabilities are preventable.
The DSIT report notes that many devices rely on unencrypted Bluetooth connections or insecure APIs for remote control functionality.
Fixing these flaws is well within the reach of manufacturers, yet companies routinely fail to prioritize security.
Even basic transparency around data collection would be a step in the right direction. Users deserve to know what’s being collected, why, and how it’s protected. But history suggests the industry is reluctant to step up.
After all, if companies like Standard Innovation can get away with quietly siphoning off user data, why would smaller players bother to invest in robust security?
So, what’s a smart-toy enthusiast to do? First, ask yourself: do you really need your device to be connected to an app?
If the answer is no, then maybe it’s best to go old school. If remote connectivity is a must, take some precautions.
Keep software updated: Ensure both the device firmware and your phone’s app are running the latest versions. Updates often include critical security patches.
Use secure passwords: Avoid default settings and choose strong, unique passwords for apps controlling your devices.
Limit app permissions: Only grant the app the bare minimum of permissions needed for functionality.
Vet the manufacturer: Research whether the company has a history of addressing security flaws. If they’ve been caught slacking before, it’s a red flag.
The conversation around sex toy hacking isn’t just about awkward headlines — it’s about how we navigate a world increasingly dependent on connected technology. As devices creep further into every corner of our lives, from the bedroom to the kitchen, the stakes for privacy and security continue to rise.
And let’s face it: there’s something uniquely unsettling about hackers turning moments of intimacy into opportunities for exploitation.
If companies won’t take responsibility for protecting users, then consumers need to start asking tough questions — and maybe think twice before connecting their pleasure devices to the internet.
As for the manufacturers? The message is simple: step up or step aside.
No one wants to be the next headline in a tale of hacked chastity belts and hijacked intimacy. And if you think that’s funny, just wait until your light bulb sells your Wi-Fi password.
This is where IoT meets TMI. Stay connected, but stay safe."

When it comes to global energy policy, few narratives are as instructive — and as cautionary — as Europe’s.
Why?
Their ill-fated experiment with wind and solar energy.
The continent’s self-inflicted woes contain lessons that should be taken to heart by those formulating U.S. energy strategy for the incoming administration.
Europe’s Misplaced Trust in Wind and Solar
Europe’s embrace of weather-dependent power generation, particularly in Germany and the United Kingdom, was a profound miscalculation.
These nations embarked on an ambitious energy transformation, predicated on the assumption that wind and solar could replace traditional fossil fuels. The result has been a catastrophe, as predicted by many.
Germany, often celebrated as the champion of “renewable” energy, should be crowned king of incompetence.
The country’s heavy investment in wind and solar has not only failed to deliver promised reductions of carbon dioxide emissions — the bogeyman of climate alarmists — but also has destabilized its once robust industrial economy.
Germany’s manufacturing sector — historically, the economic powerhouse of Europe — has been brought to its knees, with energy costs rendering many industrial processes economically unviable.
Reporting on prices in the second week of December, Robert Bryce says that “Germany’s wholesale power market came close to $1,000 per megawatt-hour, the highest level in 18 years.”
The fundamental problem lies in the inherent unpredictability of renewable sources.
Wind power demonstrates acute vulnerabilities during critical periods.
Winter presents a perfect storm of challenges: Reduced wind generation coincides with peak energy demand, creating grid instability, and heightened risk of blackouts.

A disappointingly bland statement from the nation's two best known exposé journalists.

LETTERS FROM AN AMERICAN
October 25, 2024
Heather Cox Richardson
Oct 26, 2024
A bombshell story last night from the Wall Street Journal reported that billionaire Elon Musk, one of the richest men in the world, who is backing the election of Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump with a daily million-dollar sweepstakes giveaway and gifts of tens of millions to the campaign, has been in regular contact with Russian president Vladimir Putin since late 2022. Reporters Thomas Grove, Warren P. Strobel, Aruna Viswanatha, Gordon Lubold, and Sam Schechner said that the conversations “touch on personal topics, business and geopolitical tensions.”
Musk’s SpaceX, which operates the Starlink satellite system, won a $1.8 billion contract with U.S. military and intelligence agencies in 2021. It is the major rocket launcher for NASA and the Pentagon, and Musk has a security clearance; he says it is a top-secret clearance.
Today, NASA administrator Bill Nelson called for an investigation into the story. “If the story is true that there have been multiple conversations between Elon Musk and the president of Russia,” Nelson told Burgess Everett of Semafor, “then I think that would be concerning, particularly for NASA, for the Department of Defense, for some of the intelligence agencies.”
Musk appears to be making a bid for control of the Republican Party for a number of possible reasons, including so he can continue to score federal contracts and because the high tariffs Trump has promised to place on Chinese imports would guarantee that Musk would have leverage in the electrical vehicle market.
But Musk has competition for control of the party. Today, Senate minority leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and House speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA), who lead the establishment Republican faction and the MAGAs, respectively, and thus are usually at loggerheads, issued a joint statement condemning Democratic presidential nominee Vice President Kamala Harris for “labeling [Trump] as a ‘fascist.’” They suggest she is “inviting yet another would-be assassin to try robbing voters of their choice before Election Day.”
Observers immediately pointed out that, in fact, it is Trump who has repeatedly called Harris a fascist—as well as a Marxist and a communist—and that those calling Trump a fascist are former members of his own administration like former White House chief of staff General John Kelly, or leaders like former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Mark Milley, whom Trump himself appointed to his position and who called Trump “the most dangerous person to this country.”
Harris’s contribution to this discussion was that when CNN’s Anderson Cooper asked Harris directly if she thinks Trump is a fascist at a town hall this week, she answered: “Yes, I do. And I also believe that the people who know him best on this subject should be trusted.”
Aside from the gaslighting of attacking Harris for something that Trump is the one doing, the statement seemed a calculated attempt to demonstrate Republican solidarity. But it was glaringly obvious that McConnell and Johnson found that solidarity only in attacking Harris. Their statement contained no praise of Trump.
The struggle over the Republican Party also seemed evident in yesterday’s decision by the billionaire owner of the Los Angeles Times, biotech tycoon Patrick Soon-Shiong, to kill that paper’s planned endorsement of Harris. Choosing not to make an endorsement in the race, Soon-Shiong said that he thought an endorsement would “add to the division” in the country. Elon Musk praised his decision.
Today the Washington Post also decided not to make an endorsement in the presidential race, despite the fact a piece endorsing Harris was already drafted. Publisher William Lewis said the paper was returning to its roots of not endorsing presidential candidates, although it has endorsed candidates for decades and did so in its early years as well. His statement seemed a weak cover for the evident wish of the Washington Post’s owner, Jeff Bezos, to avoid antagonizing Trump.
Bezos gives Musk a run for his money at being the richest man in the world. But while Musk wants high tariffs against China to protect his access to electric vehicle markets, Bezos’s fortune comes from Amazon, and high tariffs would shatter his business. When he was in office, Trump went out of his way to find ways to hurt Amazon to get back at Bezos for unfavorable coverage in the Post.
Los Angeles Times editorial page editor Mariel Garza, along with journalists Robert Greene and Karin Klein, resigned from the paper after its decision not to endorse Harris, and nearly 2,000 readers canceled their subscriptions. The Washington Post, too, has seen about 2,000 subscribers bow out, and fourteen of the newspaper’s columnists called the decision not to condemn Trump’s threats to the “freedom of the press and the values of the Constitution” “a terrible mistake.” Cartoonist Ann Telnaes published a blacked-out square, playing on the Post’s motto that democracy dies in darkness.
Readers are speaking out against the Washington Post for demonstrating what scholar of authoritarianism Timothy Snyder calls “obeying in advance” the demands of an authoritarian leader (although Washington Post legal journalist Ruth Marcus, who signed the letter calling the decision a terrible mistake, pointed out that the Post itself was publishing the many letters of condemnation). “Most of the power of authoritarianism is freely given,” Snyder’s “On Tyranny” reads. “In times like these, individuals think ahead about what a more repressive government will want, and then offer themselves without being asked. A citizen who adapts in this way is teaching power what it can do.”
The aftermath of the Post’s decision demonstrated what scholars say will happen after such obeying. Rather than winning favors, such a demonstration of weakness invites further abuse, as anyone who has watched Trump in action ought to know by now.
Trump’s people pounced, with advisor Stephen Miller posting: “You know the Kamala campaign is sinking when even the Washington Post refuses to endorse.”
Trump then promptly went a step further, claiming that Democrats had taken part in “rampant Cheating and Skullduggery…in the 2020 presidential election” and warning that in 2024, “WHEN I WIN, those people that CHEATED will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the Law, which will include long term prison sentences so that this Depravity of Justice does not happen again…. Please beware that this legal exposure extends to Lawyers, Political Operatives, Donors, Illegal Voters, & Corrupt Election Officials. Those involved in unscrupulous behavior will be sought out, caught, and prosecuted at levels, unfortunately, never seen before in our Country.”
Trump’s threats are designed to convince people he is a strongman who will inevitably win the 2024 presidential election. But to do that, he will have to go through the voters, who are demonstrating their enthusiasm for Democratic candidate Harris and her running mate, Minnesota governor Tim Walz.
After the announcement by the Washington Post, others stepped up to endorse Harris. The largest Teamsters union in Texas endorsed Harris before her rally tonight in Houston. In a blistering editorial, the Philadelphia Inquirer endorsed Harris, saying: “America deserves much more than an aspiring autocrat who ignores the law, is running to stay out of prison, and doesn’t care about anyone but himself.”
Tonight, Trump taped a podcast episode with Joe Rogan in Austin, Texas, hoping to reach Rogan’s large audience. He was still on the ground in Austin when he was supposed to be appearing at a rally in Traverse City, Michigan, and blamed the long taping for the fact he was three hours late to the rally. Tired of waiting, rally attendees streamed out. When he finally arrived, about 47,000 viewers watched the PBS live stream of the rally.
Harris was in Houston, where she took the fight for abortion rights to the heart of a state where an abortion ban has endangered women and driven up the infant mortality rate. People began standing in line before sunrise to get into the rally at the Houston Shell Energy Stadium and filled the 22,000-seat stadium to capacity. About 2.5 million people watched the PBS live stream.
Harris shared the stage with actor Jessica Alba and music legends Beyoncé and Willie Nelson, who asked the crowd: “Are we ready to say Madam President?”

Tom Phillips at The Guardian:
The former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro and some of his closest allies are among dozens of people formally accused by federal police of being part of a criminal conspiracy designed to obliterate Brazil’s democratic system through a rightwing coup d’état. Federal police confirmed on Thursday that investigators had concluded their long-running investigation into what they called a coordinated attempt to “violently dismantle the constitutional state”. In a statement, police said the report – which has been forwarded to the supreme court – formally accused a total of 37 people of crimes including involvement in an attempted coup, the formation of a criminal organization, and trying to tear down one of the world’s largest democracies. The accused include Bolsonaro, a disgraced army captain turned populist politician, who was president from 2018 until the end of 2022, as well as some of the most important members of his far-right administration.
They included Bolsonaro’s former spy chief, the far-right congressman Alexandre Ramagem; the former defense ministers Gen Walter Braga Netto and Gen Paulo Sérgio Nogueira de Oliveira; the former minister of justice and public security Anderson Torres; the former minister of institutional security Gen Augusto Heleno; the former navy commander Adm Almir Garnier Santos; the president of Bolsonaro’s political party, Valdemar Costa Neto; and Filipe Martins, one of Bolsonaro’s top foreign policy advisers. Also named is the rightwing blogger grandson of Gen João Baptista Figueiredo, one of the military rulers who governed Brazil during its 1964-85 dictatorship. The list contains one non-Brazilian name: that of Fernando Cerimedo, an Argentinian digital marketing guru who was in charge of communications for Argentina’s president, Javier Milei, during that country’s 2023 presidential campaign. Buenos Aires-based Cerimedo is close to Bolsonaro and his politician sons.
[...] Bolsonaro has previously denied involvement in an attempt to overturn the result of the 2022 election, which he lost to Lula. Speaking to a journalist from the Brazilian news site Metrópoles after he was named in the police report, the former president said he needed to see what was in the investigation. “I’m going to wait for the lawyer,” Bolsonaro added. Braga Netto, Heleno and other prominent names on the list made no immediate comment about the accusations in the federal police report, which the police statement said was based on a large trove of evidence gathered through plea deals, searches and the analysis of financial, internet and phone records. But prominent pro-Bolsonaro politicians criticized the report, with Rogério Marinho, the leader of the opposition in the senate, attributing it to the “incessant persecution” targeting Brazil’s right. “The more they persecute Bolsonaro, the stronger he gets,” tweeted Sóstenes Cavalcante, a Bolsonarista congressman from Rio. The alleged pro-Bolsonaro coup attempt allegedly played out during the turbulent final days of his four-year administration, which came to an end when he was narrowly defeated by Lula in the second round of the 2022 presidential election.
This is how to properly deal with fascists who try to pull coups.

!WARNING: refrences to ancient, non graphic child loss!
NO ONE HAS EVER BEEN LOST. // ALL IS TRUTH AND WAY.
“Gravis, Griffin, and I just arrived on scene, Pix.” Skylors voice crackles through her radio, “The civilian reports weren’t exaggerating- there’s a giant, er, slug-like animal here. In fact, ‘giant’ might even be an understatement.” Her girlfriend sounds openly bewildered.
Pix frowns, “Is it hostile?”
“Not on purpose. It keeps picking up cars and uprooting traffic lights, but it doesn't seem aware it’s doing it. It’s just bumping into things and they’re sticking.” Skylor reports, “The trail of slime it’s leaving is smoking, though, but it doesn’t look like it’s eating at the road.”
“Have Gravis move it to a less densely populated area- out of town completely would be best if at all possible.”
“Already on it. I’ll call Warden Nobel and have him bring us another containment cell.”
Skylor was always on the ball in the field, and Pixal was grateful she was by her side, “Thank you, Sky. Can you alert Commissioner McLane to the possible hazardous materials and have him block off the street until we can have Tox examine it?”
“I’ll send speedster over now.”
At Skylors affirmative, Pixal sets her radio to the side and continues looking through her extensive set of videos pulled from all over Ninjago city. She trusted her father had done what he could to get a hit on Dixie with his facial recognition software, but she wanted to be extra certain she couldn’t find the other woman the same way. She’d started with the cameras around the museum in an attempt to find the escape route the other thief had taken after defeating the ninja, but had come up with nothing. Despite having the technology to feed these videos into and get results in a matter of seconds, Pixal chose to go through the cameras with her own eyes. Her pattern and facial recognition was leagues above any of the market value programs, and if anyone was going to catch the woman’s face in the background of a walmart CCTV feed it would be her. The woman was incredibly skilled at avoiding cameras, apparently, because Pixal was coming up with nothing, nothing, and more nothing. She even had video archives open from years and years ago, hoping to comb through them all and find a facial match for her, to at least give her something to go off of. No luck there, either.
The last set of camera feeds on her upper set of screens is current security footage from several different vantage points throughout Ninjago- these weren’t monitoring for the thief. She’d tapped these in order to monitor the streets of Ninjago which were quickly becoming overrun with monsters she’d never seen before. The slug incident today was the latest in a long line of beasts that seemed to just… appear and begin wrecking havoc. The other elemental masters had been up to their ears in emergency situations, evacuations, and damage control. Today, it was a slug, a skittering weevil-like creature that crashed into several storefronts before dying in downtown Ninjago with no warning, and a flock of birds with bony protrusions on their back and acid spit. The past week has been much the same.
It was sheer good luck that Kryptarium prisons' deeper, more fortified cells were able to contain these animals.
As Pixal flicks through the camera feeds, there’s a familiar chime from her phone. She snatches it up and punches the answer button before the second ring, “Ronin.” She greets briskly, keeping her eyes on the screen as she leans back and crosses her arms.
“You called?” He drawls through the phone, and she can clearly envision him leaned back with his feet propped upon his desk. The very picture of relaxed.
“I need you in Ninjago yesterday. Your expertise is required.” She says immediately, not bothering to beat around the bush.
“Yeah, Yeah, I got your voicemail.” There’s a shuffle on his end, as if he’ sitting up in interest at the topic, “What’s in it for me?”
“You will have a hand in saving Ninjago.” She says flatly. He makes a noncommittal grunt and she barely resists rolling her eyes, “Fine.” She slaps her keyboard and pulls up his criminal record, “You have three unpaid fines here that have put out a warrant for your arrest for- really? Those are huge fines for… illegal parking?”
“I know!”
“Consider them paid off… if you come to Borg tower.” She bargains.
There’s another grunt, this time a winded cough of exertion as he gets to his feet. “What do you need me for anyway?” He grumbles, yawning into the phone.
Pixal slumps a little, “There is a new villain in town- he is working with bounty hunters. I need your help identifying one of the girls working for him.”
“You know not every bounty hunter knows each other, right?”
“I am aware that you and her have spent several years in this profession at the same time.” She says coolly, “If anyone were to know her, it would be you. Will you come?”
“Yeah, yeah, I’m coming to Borg tower. It’ll be a few hours.” She hears the jangle of keys on the other line, “Don’t forget to take care of my fines.”
With one hand, Pixal infiltrates the police database and erases the marks off his criminal record entirely. There was no hint that he’d ever so much as looked at an illegal parking space. It takes ten seconds at most,  “Done.” She says simply, and hangs up the phone.
Another hour of nothing passes by, with a brief update from Skylor about the slug and no further activity on the cameras to be concerned about. She checks her email a few times and shoots Wu another text that he doesn’t respond to- he’d gone out to Misakos current archeological dig site to discuss the gauntlet with her, and was completely off the grid because of it. Or he was ignoring her texts. Pixal has a niggling feeling in the back of her mind that he was hiding something, but there’s no proof other than her gut feeling. She wouldn't start anything over a bad vibe.
She does another useless search for the gauntlet and once again comes up empty- there was nothing about the artifact on the internet or in any digitized academic databases she checked. There were mentions of gauntlets or sets of armor, but nothing that matched up with the powers they’d seen so far. The longer Wu went without checking in, the more certain Pixal became that he’d hit a wall too. All Misakos encyclopedic history knowledge, and even she hadn't heard of this thing… Where were they supposed to go from here?
She’s so lost in thought that the sudden screech of the red panic alarm above her head causes her to launch up out of her chair and to her feet, staggering with the surge of pseudo-adrenaline that floods her processor. She scrambles for her radio and flips it to the correct frequency just in time to hear Dareth's panicked voice shouting from the line, “-taking him to the roof!”
“Dareth! What’s going on?” Pixal demands, reaching out and turning off the alarm with the keypad next to the wall before taking off towards the elevator.
“The thief is back, and she’s stealing your father!” Dareth wails through the radio.
Pixal punches the elevator call button four times in a panic despite the fact the extra pushes won’t will it to get here any faster. This is exactly why she advocated for stairs in the ninja's private penthouse- a project the others continually put off. (“We can just jump out the window and airjitzu down. No big deal!” Well what about if you need to go up!) Stupid! “What?” She demands, squeezing through the elevator doors before they’ve fully opened.
“I’ll explain later- right now you need to get to the roof!” He says urgently, his cartoony voice uncharacteristically serious.
“I am headed that way now. I will meet you there-”
“Sorry, Pix, but you’re on your own here.” His voice comes through with a wince, “I’m down for the count.”
She feels a cold chill sweep over her body, “Are you okay?”
“I’m not dying. Get to the roof, save your father, and we’ll worry about me later.” His voice comes through firm and gentle- there’d been a time where Pixal had written Dareth off as someone she’d always need to protect, but moments like this remind Pixal that Dareth was steady and solid. He’d been training ever since her Father asked him to stay by his side, his skills had grown and he’d become a formidable opponent. It had to have been someone strong to put him down- and he definitely didn't get benched without putting up a fight.
She had to be ready when these doors opened.
“Call Skylor.” She orders, the act of taking control offering her a calm she desperately needed, “She was on her way back to the tower, she can get to you quicker than I can. Do not die.”
“Ten-four, Boss.”
There’s no more time to talk. The elevator doors open up to the roof with a ding! And immediately Pixal is assaulted by whipping wind and the loud roar of helicopter blades slicing the air into pieces. She rushes out onto the tarmac, sprinting straight for the group of people loading her struggling father into the helicopter. Standing out from the black clad ensemble is a shock of bright pink hair. The thief, the woman who took her friends away, looks back at her with a bored, neutral expression. Pixels coolant feels like it’s boiling. The other woman turns towards another member of her crew and says something Pixal can’t hear through all the noise and motions to the sky as if to say shoo!
Then, without a second of hesitation, she spins around and charges at Pixal in return. She’s fast, putting a significant amount of space between Pixal and her father when the two women meet in a clash of fists on the middle of the roof. Pixal has to keep her head on straight, but she can feel her calm, controlled mask rapidly deteriorating each time she catches a glimpse of her father getting strapped into the Helicopters back seat.
He’s looking at her with fear in his eyes, but there’s a calm reassurance there- he knows she won’t get to him in time. It’s okay, Pixal.
A pang of heartbreak bruises her power core. She feels her fighting turn vicious, jabs and punches hitting and hitting hard, until she finally slams the woman face down against the roof. She whips out a set of cuffs from her jumpsuit and slaps them on her wrists- They activate with a hum and Pixal jabs the power button frantically. The cuff link beeps and Pixal slams the woman's wrists down on the rooftop beneath her, the cuffs latching onto the roof and rendering her immobile.
Pixal leaps to her feet and spins around- the helicopter is off the roof, probably has been for a while, and it’s flying across Ninjago faster than Pixal could feasibly catch. She’d have to race down the stairs to the sub basement, gear up, and then give chase- they’d be gone by then. They were already gone.
Her chest feels like it’s caving in. Why? Why can’t she save the people she loves? Why is she always on the sidelines, just a second too late?
Pull yourself together. She takes a deep, shuddering breath just to move air through her circuits. The thick smell of asphalt brings her mind back to the current issue- she turns around to find the thief still cuffed to the roof, her mouth and nose covered with blood and that infuriating bored expression on her face.
A ringing fills Pixal head and she feels disconnected from her body, pushing away her despair so hard she distances herself from her own processor.
Pixal hauls her up and takes her down the stairs to the ninjas level, not caring when she stumbles to keep up with Pixals rapid pace. She can’t care about anything right now. They rarely use the actual interrogation room, but Pixal fishes out the key for it now. On one side is the classic one-way glass and a few metal chairs seated at a metal table securely fastened to the floor. Pixal uncuffs the restrictive suppression bonds and switches them out for classic metal cuffs, weaving the chain through another padlock and chain attached to the table so she doesn’t get any funny ideas. She’s moving on autopilot, clicking locks together with practiced, robotic movements. She has to keep herself together, everyone is relying on her. Once she’s secure, Pixal washes her hands. After that she politely hands her a box of tissues so she can mop up her bloody face and gets her a glass of water and an ice pack.
She doesn’t say anything to the thief, who matches her silence quietly. Pixal observes her behind the one-way glass for several long minutes.
The bubble around her pops, and reality rushes back in. She sucks in a sharp breath and turns away, whipping her radio out and hitting the button frantically, “Dareth?” She questions. No response, “Dareth, status report.”
A long pause.
The radio crackles, “He’s alright, Pix.” Skylor’s voice comes through from Dareths radio, “He’s with the medic now. A few broken bones, but nothing life threatening.”
Pixal closes her eyes and presses the radio to her forehead, relief so deep she can almost feel it in her circuits. “Stay with him, please, and ask him what happened once he is cleared for visitors.” She glances over at the pink haired woman, who looks completely at ease as she balls up a blood soaked tissue and sets it on a clean tissue to avoid getting blood on the table top, “I caught our mystery thief from the museum break in.” Two mismatched eyes glance up and seem to meet Pixals green ones before skating away to look around the empty room, “I’m going to see what I can find out.”
The woman smiles serenely and settles back, unconcerned.
“Good luck. Call me if you need me, okay?”
“I will.”
The room is still deafeningly quiet when Pixal goes back inside. The click of the door closing behind her feels harsh on her audio processor. It’s sterile, with gray floors and white walls and fluorescent lights strung across the ceiling. Pixal sits at one of the available chairs on the other side of the table,  “My name is Pixal borg. I have a few questions for you.”
The woman smiles wider.
“Hello, Miss Borg. Ask whatever you like.”
She spends the next hour asking questions to a brick wall. The thief is listening and attentive to every one of Pixar’s words, but at the end of each question or statement is pointed and resolute silence. She doesn’t rise to any bait Pixal sets out- she doesn’t get angry or scoff when Pixal slips in subtle insults, she doesn’t preen over praise, she doesn’t even look tired or annoyed as the questioning continues on and on. She’s the picture perfect image of poise, and Pixal can’t gain an inch.
Her phone rings at the hour and fifteen minute mark. She answers it with a palpable relief to have something else to do other than fail at questioning her only lead about this kidnapping, “Pixal speaking.” She greets briskly, stepping out of the room and rolling imaginary soreness from her shoulders.
“What’s with all the blood on the roof?” Ronin asks curiously.
Pixal winces- she’d handed out a few good left hooks during their scuffle, “The thief I needed you to identify made an appearance today. I caught her.”
“Damn, did you break her nose or something?”
“Her employer kidnapped my father.” She reveals bluntly.
Ronin sucks a hiss of air through his teeth at that, “…Okay, well, send me up the elevator and I’ll come down.”
Pixal calls the elevator and once it arrives she steps inside and rides it back up to the roof. She’s beginning to hate this thing. She clicks her radio just to be doing something, “Any news, Sky?”
“Dareth is sleeping off anesthesia right now, sorry.”
“Thank you. Ronin has just arrived, I believe he will be able to help.”
“Keep me updated.” Skylor says pointedly.
“I will.” Pixal holsters her radio, staring at the closed doors in front of her. She felt so useless- she couldn’t get a peep out of either of their two leads, she was stuck inside doing futile research while random monsters were running wild through Ninjago, and she couldn’t stop her father from getting kidnapped from right under her nose.
The doors open to Ronin leaning casually against the wall waiting for it. He whistles low, eyebrows shooting up to his hairline, “You look like shit.” Are the first words out of his mouth.
“It has been a rough week.” She says tightly.
“It’s Tuesday.”
“Get in the elevator.”
He obliges and she takes them back down to the Ninjas floor, filing him in on the situation as they ride down. He’s rubbing his scruff in thought as the doors open up and they step out, thinking hard, “There are two possible options I’m thinking of, Maybe Milena or Raven. Both of them color their hair regularly, and they’re sloppy enough to get caught like that.” He muses, “I’ve never heard of a Dixie Samson though, which makes sense if she’s a rookie.”
Pixal heads straight towards the interrogation room, feeling an inkling of dread- part of her is convinced the woman would have vanished in the time it took her to bring Ronin back here. She feels a line of tension leave her shoulders when she walks back inside to see her still sitting there casually on the other side of the glass.
Ronin stops dead in his tracks, “By the first master- You have got to be kidding me.” He groans, reaching up to run a hand down his face. He looks back up at the woman and does a full body wince.
“Do you know her?” Pixal cant help the amused curve of her lips at Ronins dramatics.
“Do I know her…” He grumbles darkly, dragging his feet up to the window, “She’s my ex sister in law.”
Pixals checklist of questions on the woman is immediately derailed in surprise, “You were married?”
“Everyone makes mistakes.” He defends.
“Who would agree to- no, it is not important right now. What can you tell me about her?”
“I can tell you she’s only in those cuffs because she wants to be.” He grimaces, “Her name is Stella and I doubt there's a set of restraints good enough to hold her short of strapping her down like Hannibal Lecter, and I’m skeptical if even that would work. If she’s still here, she has ulterior motives. She wants something from you, or she wants something in this building.”
“She already took everything.” Pixal barely resists baring her teeth. She sighs, “I need to get information from her.”
“Sorry, but you’re out of luck there. I can promise you she won't speak a word of her employer. You couldn’t waterboard info out of her if she doesn’t want to tell you.” He delivers the bad news bluntly.
“So this is another dead end.”
“Not exactly.” Ronin crosses his arms over his chest and leans back against the glass, “Stella isn’t cheap to hire and if we throw in who exactly she’s dealing with- Borg, the ninja, you- that’ll only make this job that much more expensive. So we can confidently narrow down her employer to Ninjagos one percent.” He grins at Pixals shocked expression, “She does damn good work- the best work- but it’ll cost ya. That big paycheck is what ensures her loyalty. As long as her employer is supplementing her bank account, her lips are sealed- even in the face of torture.”
“She’s all about money…” Pixal turns that over in her mind, looking for the piece she needs to unravel Stella's loyalty.
Ronin shrugs, “All mercenaries are, Stella just has the status and reputation to be bought out by the richest of the rich. With that amount of cash backing her up, You wouldn't be able to even threaten anything out of her.”
Pixal holds up her hand, stopping Ronins words as she carefully considers his words. “I don’t need to threaten her.” As if she’d had an epiphany, Pixal immediately takes off around the corner. Ronin ends up scrambling after her, Following her into Stella's interrogation room just barely before the door closes.
Stella looks relaxed and unconcerned, that same bored expression she's always wearing on her face. She’s got her chair kicked back and her feet on the table, her cuffed hands folded over her belly as she observed them come inside. She raises a brow at Ronin and opens her mouth to speak but Pixal beats her to it.
Pixal yanks out a leather wallet from her jumpsuit and grabs a pen from her from breast pocket, “I am aware you will not speak against your employer, and I am also aware he is paying you a lot of money to keep his secrets.” She sits down in front of Stella, slamming her pocket book and pen to the table, “But I’m Pixal fucking Borg.”
She opens the book and pulls out a stack of checks, signing one and sliding it across the table blank, “Are you interested in new employment?”
Heartbeats pass. Ronin is staring at the check so hard Pixals half sure his eyes are about to pop out of his head, but Stella looks as cool and collected as ever. If Pixal had to breathe she’d be holding it, praying that the gamble works. Stella carefully takes each foot off the table and sits up straight, scooting her chair forward and resting her elbows on the table. She studies the check for a long moment before her lips twitch, the scar at the corner of her mouth pulling her lips into a pleased smile.
“I don’t want your money, Pixal Borg.” She gently, strangely respectfully, tears the check in half and slides the pieces across the table towards the two. Ronin makes a sound like a wounded animal at the action.
Pixals heart plummets.
“But there is something I do want.” Stella continues before Pixal can feel the full weight of failure. Stella looks at Pixal with a firm, intense furrow to her brow. “I will tell you everything I know if you do me a favor. I don’t know what or when that will be. This is what I do know: You are the most powerful woman in Ninjago, Pixal Borg, and I want you to owe me.”
“Deal.” Pixal hold out her hand for Stella to shake without a second of hesitation. Her friends, her family, her father- everyone was relying on her, and she needed this information because right now they had nothing.
But as Stella takes her hand in a firm grip, Pixal can’t help but feel like she’s made a deal with the devil.
Sella sits back, bored expression sinking over her features once more, “His name is Broden Voss, the CEO of Voss Technologies.” She gets right down to business. Pixal recognizes the name in flashes of memory- a place card at a table during a charity event, investors threats to take their money elsewhere when her fathers quarterly review is lower than expected, a flash of red hair and a shark-like smile as a towering man shakes her hand at a high brow cocktail party, “He hired me to infiltrate Ninjago Citys Museum of History after his previous hire, Dixie Samson, failed. I was tasked with finding and retrieving a gauntlet forged by one of Voss’s ancestors, a warlord by the name of Utano whose armor had mystical powers. I was paid to do whatever possible to return this gauntlet to him, and as such I used one of the abilities in the gauntlet to send the ninja to another Realm. The only other ability I've seen... I have witnessed Voss change the gauntlet configuration with a thought. Essentially shapeshifting, though I can't be certain how far that particular gift goes.
“Voss’s plan always centered around Cyrus Borg. Ever since Voss Technology was usurped as Ninjagos main technology company by Borg Industries, he’s felt cheated and wronged. Now that he has this powerful artifact, he intends on using it to tear Ninjago apart and rebuild it with Voss tech, installing himself back in the forefront of tech manufacturing,” She pins Pixal with a pointed look, “He’s obsessed with defeating Cyrus Borg- but your father is not in any immediate danger.”
Pixal feels a bit of tension leave her shoulders, “I have time to save him?”
“Voss wants Borg to have a front row seat to the fall of his empire. He wants Cyrus alive to see the rubble of Borg Tower and after that, I don’t know. Now that he has Borg, though, his plan will be entering the final phase. He will use the power of the gauntlet to open portals throughout downtown ninjago- I know several of the locations he’s planning on placing them that I can pass along. He’s targeting centralized, high traffic areas so he can flood the streets with monsters as quickly and effectively as possible. He is aiming for the absolute maximum amount of destruction in every inch of the city.” She steeples her fingers, “Evacuate the city. Now.”
She doesn’t hesitate on this, raising her Borg radio to her mouth, “Sky, I am officially ordering a full evacuation of the city. I will explain everything later, but right now I need you and the others mobilized.” At Skylors confirmation, Pixal turns her attention back to Stella, “Monsters from where, exactly? Where do these portal lead?”
Where did you send my friends?
Stella pauses on this question, aware the answer will not be one Pixal is thrilled to hear, “The Realm of Madness.” She reveals. “What’s going to come through that portal are some of the most terrifying monsters Ninjago has ever seen, and if I’m any good at reading people- and I am the very best- I can tell you that Broden Voss will not be able to control the chaos he creates. If you can’t stop this, it could lead to more destruction than Ninjago has ever seen.”
“Well,” Pixal says tersely, “Maybe I would have a better chance stopping him if the ninja had not been sent to the Realm of madness and unable to help.”
“Yeah, my bad.”
Ronin trails Pixal as she goes back to the computers, sitting down roughly and opening up a new tab to start another bout of research. Now she had a name- Utano, a great warlord. Pixal could work with that. She pauses and glances at Ronin, curiosity picking at her, “Your sister in law, eh?”
He lets out a put upon sigh and crosses his arms, “Ex sister in law, I’ll remind you.”
“Who became a bounty hunter first?”
“...She was,” He admits grudgingly, “She’s been in the game longer than most.”
Pixal frowns, “I went through countless security feeds and crime reports- That long and she hasn’t gotten caught on camera anywhere? Not even during a trip to the grocery store?”
“Oh, she definitely has. You just don’t know where to look.” He sits down next to her, “She changes her appearance just as seamlessly as Chamille- hair dye, prosthetics, contacts… her eyes aren’t actually blue and brown, you know. She’s evaded any and all facial recognition with clever makeup and smoke-and-mirror tricks.” Pixal opens her mouth, “-And no, I am not going to tell you what to look for. Even if I wasn't a fellow mercenary following the mercenary code, Stella is not an enemy anyone wants to have.”
“Okay.” Pixal relents, “Do you know what this favor could be?”
“No clue.” He shrugs and peeks over her shoulder, “You looking up that warlord guy?”
“Girl.” Pixal corrects as she scans over the basic wikipedia page she’d pulled up. There was… little here, “No parents listed, no spouse. She had one child later in life, but there is no information on them, Not even a name. She was married to a powerful lord in her twenties, but he died a year after they wed. She rose to power through extremist political lobbying and strategic battles with her personal militia until she had conquered over half of ninjago.”
Ronin quirks a brow, “No mention of her magic armor?”
“None here. All it says is she was killed by the elemental masters of creation during her final battle.” Pixal goes back to her original search, “But that was just wikipedia, I’m sure there’s more information somewhere.”
Spoiler alert: There was not more information anywhere.
Pixal scours the internet, following dead end academic papers and documentaries- she even got desperate and checked reddit, of all places. Even after using her status to get into parts of the internet usually barred from the general public, she still came up with nothing. “There are scrolls referenced in all of these papers, but I cannot find the scrolls. They were never digitalized, and apparently no one knows where they went.” She sits back roughly, pushing herself away from the monitor so she doesn’t have to look at it anymore.
Ronin startles awake where he’d fallen asleep on the couch after he got bored, peeking up at her over the arm of it, “Maybe Stella is lying about Utano.”
It’s at that moment that the elevator door dings open and Misako comes striding out with Wu trailing slowly behind her. She’s dressed in thick pants and a button up covered in a thin layer of sand and dirt, her hair much the same in its bun sitting on top of her head, “Did I hear you say Utano?” She asks, shrugging off her satchel and tossing it aside with a cloud of dust, “I came straight from the dig site once Wu informed me of the situation. If you already know about Utano, then we’re on the right track.”
“Misako!” Pixal stands with a smile, moving to hug the woman, “It is good to see you. We know the name, but there’s not much else on the internet to go off of.” She admits.
“I know.” Misako says with a wince, “When Wu told me about the gauntlet, I had a feeling I knew what it was. The scrolls that had any record of Utano were all under the Explorers Club’s lock and key- When I called Cecil and asked about them, he confessed that several artifacts in the clubs collection went missing the day they were all transferred to the museum's custody, apparently lost in the shuffle.”
Pixal feels her expression darken, “He is saying the explorers club lost artifacts? I find that difficult to believe.”
“I looked into it on the way here. Underhill sticks out as the most suspicious- he took off to the other side of the country and bought himself a nice, expensive house on the beach, but the rest of the club members all seem to have come into some money with similar luxury purchases as well.” Misako confirms grimly. “That doesn’t matter right now. What do you know about Utano?”
Pixal relays all the information Stella had told them and what little else she’d gleaned from the internet. Misako nods thoughtfully, “Her reign over Ninjago started hundreds and hundreds of years ago, before we were even aware the sixteen realms existed- She was part of Ninjago and the Cloud Kingdom, a parent from either realm. We refer to her armor in modern times as the Allied Armor of Azure, said to call on different realms to aid its wearer, and scholars presume she received a gift from her Cloud Kingdom parent that allowed this type of enchantment. The only pieces that were meant to survive the armor's destruction were the Helmet that we passed on to the Cloud Kingdom, and the chest plate, which we studied.”
“Is there a way to neutralize its abilities?”
“If there was a way, it would be in the stolen scrolls. As I see it, there is none.” Misako says apologetically, wincing. “Even the Elemental Masters were not able to defeat her at her most powerful.”
Pixal frowns, “The elemental masters did defeat her.”
There’s a pause, “Yes… they did, but it… wasn’t a fair fight.”
“What does that mean?” Ronin pipes up, “Did they get her while she was sleeping or something?”
Misako sighs, “You said you read she had one child, yes?” Pixal nods and Misako shakes her head, “She had three. We have private scrolls written by Utano detailing her three children and how much she loved them. The Elemental Masters of the time made a decision. They needed leverage- They needed bargaining chips. Only one child survived, and Utano was defeated.”
a heartbeat passes.
Pixal swallows down her horror, “The only way they stopped her was by going after something she cared about.”
“And from what Stella is saying, it sounds like Broden Voss doesn’t care about anything-” Ronin snorts, “Except maybe killing your dad.”
“You are not helpful.” Pixal snaps immediately.
“I’m sorry, I don’t have any good news.” Misako bows her head.
“Thank you for coming, Misako, but this has been a huge waste of time.” Pixal says bitterly, turning away.
Misako doesn’t flinch at the words, knowing what stress Pixal must be under. She almost doesn’t want to say what she needs to say next. She takes a step forward and opens her mouth anyway, “I didn’t come here to tell you about Utano. Wu could have passed along that message for me.” She says softly.
Pixal looks back at her with a questioning frown, “What did you come here for?” She asks.
Misako steps to the side so Wu is standing in front of Pixal now. He looks miserable and ashamed, staring down at the floor, “I came to make sure he told you.”
Pixal feels a lightning flash of alarm go through her, “Told me what?” she swallows roughly. From where he’s laying on the couch, Ronin sits up in curiosity. There’s a pregnant pause, “I do not have time for this.” She says sharply, refusing to let her voice shake. She turns back to the computers, moving away from them. The tension in the room feels different and wrong- She doesn’t want him to say anything.
“It’s about Zane.” Wu manages to whisper, still looking at the floor.
Pixal freezes in her tracks. Her core seems to tighten painfully, icy fingers wrapping around her insides and tangling her carefully sorted wiring into knots. She slowly spins on her heel to face him again, “What about him?” She asks carefully. The question is laced with grief.
He’s going to break her heart.
Misako makes a go on gesture with her head that Wu sees out of the corner of his eye. He takes another moment to build up his nerve and looks up, meeting Pixal eye for the first time since he’d walked through that door, “Three years ago-'' He begins.
“Master Wu, I don’t need a recap,” She says tightly.
“Three years ago,” He presses on, “After we caught Aspheera, I went to see her in Kryptarium. There were questions I needed answered. When I saw her, I asked why she chose to kill him when I was the one-” He swallows and pauses for a moment, “She told me he was not dead.”
Pixal stares at him, “She did not kill him?”
Wu takes a tentative step forward, “No, she merely banished him… To the Never Realm, a realm impossible to return from.”
“He is… alive?” She breathes softly, shock rendering her dumb for several long moments. Joy and hope bubbles up her chest, “Zane is alive. We can bring him home. We just need to figure out a way to get back to Ninjago- there has to be some way to make it back.”
“Pixal…” Misako’s voice is heavy with sadness.
“Why did you keep this from us, Master Wu?” She’s trying to be angry, but the happiness spreading through her fights the frown on her face, “We could have figured it out together, all of us, and brought him home!”
Wu looks at her with wet, sorrowful eyes. Pixels smile dims.
“There is a way back from the Never Realm,” He says gravely, “The fruit of the travelers tree, high in the mountains.” Her circuits tie themselves together, she can tell another shoe is about to drop, “I discovered it three years ago, when I traveled to the Never Realm to get him.”
She’s not smiling anymore. The room is silent. The glow from the computer monitors illuminates Wu’s robe in pale blue light. It’s so, so quiet.
Her voice is steady, “Why is he not home?”
“Pixal…” He begins.
“Do not patronize me!” She shouts, tears springing to her eyes, “Why tell me this? Why bring up the past and get my hopes up just to crush them again? I have already accepted that he is dead, I did not need you to yank my feelings around like-”
“He’s not dead.” Wu cuts in, and Pixal stops mid-rant, her hands loosening from the fists she’d balled them into.
“I do not understand.” She says blankly, slumping into herself. She tries to put the pieces together, to fit the tragedy into a story that makes sense in the absence of an explaination, “He… chose to stay there?”
“No,” Wu says sadly, and then proceeds to tell her about the worst moment of his life. He tells her about coming to a land unnaturally cold and barren, snow drifts and ice that suffocated the crops and froze people whole. He tells her about the handful of towns still alive who lived under constant fear of their supernaturally powerful emperor, a man who controlled every snowflake in the land. He tells her about making the trek across the mountain and stumbling upon a species of beast hunted to near extinction by the Emperor's samurai, and finding the travelers tree. He tells her about finally coming upon the palace gates, through the Emperor's throne room doors, and who he’d found sitting atop the dais.
“It was Zane, his body, but the man we know and loved was gone.” He tells her, voice thick with pain, “He was violent and angry, and passive to the struggle and pain of others. He did not respond to my voice, he did not react to reminders of who he once was, and he did not hesitate to attempt to strike me down.”
Pixal is silent, leaning against the communications console as if her legs had no strength. She says nothing, face twisted up in aching raw grief and sadness.
“Zane… I believe he was gone, truly. He would have been horrified at what he’d become… You must understand, I did what I did to respect the man I loved as my own son.”
“What did you do?” Pixals voice cracks.
“I could not kill him,” Wu closes his eyes, “I used the fruit of the travelers tree to open a portal to the Realm of Madness… where I banished the Ice Emperor, and freed the Never Realm from his grasp.”
She bows her head, hiding her face in shadows.
“I told you all of that to tell you this… the longer the Ninja haven't returned, the more I fear there is something… or someone keeping them there. They should have made it to the Mountain of madness by now. I have the utmost faith in them, but not only am I afraid of what they might find there, I am afraid of what- or who- may find them. The Ice Emperor was a formidable foe-”
“Stop talking.” Pixal interrupts him icily, voice hard as steel.
He goes silent, staring at her.
“Master Wu… for all of your age… for every ounce of wisdom you have… you are still one of the most foolish people I have ever met.” She looks up at him and her eyes burn, hot pinpricks of fire and pain and rage. “You should have dragged him home. We would have helped him- we would have helped him! We could have saved him-! And- and you better hope the ninja run into him, and do what you failed to do and bring him back to Ninjago- or else when this blows over I am dragging you to the Realm of Madness myself and we are combing every inch of that realm until we find him ourselves!”
He shrinks with shame and guilt under her ire as she advances upon him, rage making her fans kick into high gear, “You knew he was there, you knew the- the Ice Emperor was in the Realm of Madness and you knew he could have posed a serious threat to the ninja, yet you told me they would be okay! That there was nothing to worry about! And now- I cannot go after them! I have to stay here and protect Ninjago, I cannot leave these innocent people behind like I could have a few days ago when my friends first vanished-!” She chokes on a sob, swiping hot tears out of her eyes.
“Pixal, I didn't know-" He looks gutted, "… I’m so sorry-” He starts, reaching out, but she takes a step away from him and bares her teeth.
“Do not-” She snaps, jerking a hand down to keep him away from her, “-Apologize to me. Apologize to Zane when we get him back, apologize to the ninja for keeping this from them, and then never speak to me again. That’s the only thing you can do for me, Master Wu. We’ll work together now because the city needs everyone it can get, but after that... “ She shakes her head, condemnation in her eyes.
He nods, cowed, “If that is what you want… I understand.”
She takes a deep breath, centers herself, and picks up the communicator again. She needs to talk to Skylor, Her face is grim as she raises it to her lips.
“Pixal?” He hesitantly says, before she can speak, “What are we going to do about the ninja?”
“We are going to trust they can make it home,” She says, “And we are going to do our best to make sure there is still a home to come back to.”
The first thing Cyrus smells is the thick scent of designer perfume- he was born into money, raised in the lap of luxury, expensive colognes have always been a part of his life. With the blindfold wrapped around his eyes, the smell becomes stronger and sharper. He narrows the other occupant in the room to a handful of other high society socialites. If he were in the upscale, posh parfumerie in downtown Ninjago he could appreciate the sweet earthy scent of tahitian vanilla, ylang-ylang, rosa centerfoils, italian cinnamon, jasmine, osiris root, and rose oil. An expensive bottle worn only for special occasions- he might even recognize it. As a recently kidnapped prisoner trying to figure out how to untie his wrists from the railings on his wheelchair, some of the intricacies of the scent are lost on him.
“You’ll won’t get away with this.” It feels cliche the moment it comes out of his mouth, but he can’t help but break the silence. The other person in the room is just… staring at him. Cyrus can feel the satisfied, smug gaze weighing on his shoulders. He knows he’s being watched.
“Yes, I will.” The voice is deep and smooth, effortlessly confident.
He doesn’t know what to say.
Shifting sounds in front of him, then the soft click of a wooden box closing. The sharp flick of a lighter. The smell of burning tobacco and whiskey seeps into the air.
“Would you like a cigar, Cyrus?”
“I never acquired a taste for them.” He responds stiffly. He knows that voice, doesn’t he? From where?
“Oh, I’m sure you’d like these if you tried it. Two thousand dollars, retail.” He pauses to taste the smoke, probably. Cyrus can’t see him to tell, “Could I offer you a drink, then? What’s a man of your status’s drink of choice?” He humms in thought, gravely and low, and taps his fingers on a table (desk?) in front of him. It’s more for show than any actual thinking, “Louis XIII cognac? Chateau Cheval Blanc, 1947? Or maybe you go for something a bit pricier, hm? D’Amalfi Limoncello Supreme?”
“I’m not thirsty.”
“I recommend the cognac, personally. It’s a celebration, after all.”
The hair raises on the back of Cyrus’s neck, “A celebration of what?”
“My victory, of course.” He laughs like that was a silly question, “I won.”
Swallowing thickly, Cyrus tries again to wiggle his wrists out from his bindings. “The ninja-”
“-are gone.” The man responds and Cyrus freezes. The voice was no longer across the room, but right in front of him. He’d move silently across the floor, crouching down to speak directly to Cyrus, “The ninja are gone. No one will be able to save you.”
He leans in, his breath hot on the shell of Cyrus’s ear, “I suggest you have a glass, Cyrus. It will be the last drink you ever have.” He promises.
Cyrus jerks back and slams his head forward before he can think about it. There’s a sharp crack and something warm and wet splatters on his cheek. The man swears loudly and he can hear him stumble away.
“You son of a-” He snarls, smooth confidence immediately bleeding into red hot rage.
“That- ow- Well, that hurts.” Cyrus winced, head pounding.
“I am going to enjoy destroying you!” His voice is thick with hatred.
Cyrus doesn’t know what to think. Who are you?
His wheelchair is kicked roughly and he tips over. He falls hard and he could have braced himself and been just fine if not for the edge of a coffee table sitting perfectly at concussion height.
The world turns black.

"Given the complex relationship of Hizballah to its Lebanese constituencies—a relationship that traverses the Resistance, political, and social spheres—Israeli rhetoric stating that the purpose of this summer’s [2006] attack was to 'remove' Hizballah from Lebanon treads dangerously close to ideas of depopulation. Who is this Hizballah that the Israeli military so desperately wished to remove? What if one member of a family is a party member and others are not? What if the daughter of the family attends a school funded by Hizballah—does that make that family a legitimate target by Israeli reasoning? Or Fatima, a volunteer who cooks for the poor during Ramadan at a Hizballah welfare organization? Is she a target? Or Wafaa Hoteit, official party spokesperson and liaison to the press and researchers? What about the democratically elected Hizballah members of parliament? Mohammad Fneish, the minister of energy?
'Hizballah strongholds' are places where people live and work. The southern suburbs of Beirut, for example, are in fact a vibrant conglomeration of urban neighborhoods where residents have varying political perspectives, religious beliefs and identities, and lifestyles. Elaborate homes exist alongside run-down buildings, as do shops selling European fashions alongside those selling Islamic dress, all interspersed with internet cafés, vegetable stands, salons, charity organization offices, and corner markets. One of the buildings in the now entirely destroyed 'Hizballah security zone' contained the party’s media relations office, where reporters and researchers were granted interviews. That office was on the second floor of a block that included apartments, stores selling everything from spices to toys, and a fantastic bakery and juice bar—a far cry from the trappings of 'terrorist targets.' The deliberate targeting of civilian infrastructure and strikes on civilian convoys and residences indicate the Israeli government’s understanding that Hizballah is much more than an armed militia. And indeed, as we have seen, in addition to its Resistance militia, Hizballah is a political party and a social welfare network. It has to do with economic interests as well as religious ideologies, local politics, and anti-imperialist stances. This does not, however, legitimate the deliberate targeting of civilians. Israeli claims that Hizballah was 'hiding behind civilians' are efforts to counter the storm of accusations of deliberate targeting by reasserting the separation between people who were and were not carrying arms and placing the blame for the conflation on Hizballah. Yet both the AI and the HRW reports found that those claims did not hold up under investigation. To remove Hizballah from Lebanon would require the 'removal' of its civilian constituencies. Playing devil’s advocate, one could say that the enmeshment of Hizballah with civilian life in Lebanon legitimates strikes against civilian targets because the water is as hostile as the fish swimming in it. The obvious problem with this logic is that draining the pond would be tantamount to ethnic cleansing." Tumblr media
(Top Star News Reporter Hwang Seon-yong) BTS Jimin's fandom is expressing dissatisfaction with his agency. They have been pointing out problems with their agency for a long time, but since there is no feedback, they say they can no longer tolerate it. DC Inside BTS's Jimin Gallery and Twitter's Jimin General Team have been holding truck demonstrations since November 13th in front of Hive Co., Ltd.'s headquarters in Yongsan-gu, Seoul, securities companies, and broadcasting companies.
On the truck, “Is Hive the agency of BTS Jimin?”, “Hive is neglecting his duties by not renewing his contract”, “Please explain that Like Crazy did not receive RIAA platinum certification”, “Billboard top-selling song Nomi, please explain for ignoring request to restock single CD”, It contains phrases such as “Sue malicious comments and anti-gallery comments and protect the artist.”
In addition to the truck protest, fans' passionate comments are amplifying by issuing statements on Twitter.
The BTS Jimin Fan Association stated, "The title song 'Like Crazy' from Jimin's first mini-album 'FACE' was based on RIAA platinum certification for selling 1 million units in the U.S. last August, but has not yet been certified due to the agency's inadequate response. They are requesting RIAA Platinum certification for Like Crazy, saying, “We are not receiving the certification.”
“RIAA certification signifies the success of an album or single in the music industry, and the certification itself serves as a marketing tool to help drive sales and streaming. It can lead to more lucrative licensing deals, and as a certified hit, you are more likely to perform well. It allows for high fees and provides several advantages that strengthen the artist's profile. Unlike Japan's RIAJ, America's RIAA requires agency response in the form of paying a certain amount of money and receiving certification. In addition, ' Even though 'Like Crazy' was the first Korean solo artist to be nominated in the Top Selling Song category at the 2023 Billboard Music Awards, the agency did not provide any support during the counting period, as local fans in the United States did not meet their demands for a single CD restock even after the first sold out. “It appears,” he said, raising his voice.
He also said, "The agency's helpless response to malicious comments and anti-sexual posts has also been pointed out. Due to these various problems, it can be said that Hive has revealed a lack of artist management ability, lack of marketing ability, and major loopholes in career management."
Through statements and truck demonstrations, he is demanding improved management and professional artist care, and is strongly calling for an official apology, explanation, and communication from those responsible. The fandom has been going through a difficult time due to the lack of management and poor care from the agency, so they are predicting a long-term battle, saying, ‘This time, we will go to the end.’ Attention is being paid to what kind of answer the agency will provide.
Below is the full statement from the BTS Jimin Fan Association: BTS Jimin Fan Association is your company, HYBE Co. We have raised the following issues with (Hive Co., Ltd.) for a long time, but have not received any feedback, so we are issuing this statement and strongly request your company's active and sincere implementation as soon as possible.
Like Crazy will be certified RIAA Platinum. "Jimin's first mini-album title song 'Like Crazy' last August became the first song by a KPOP solo artist released in 2023 to exceed 1 million units sold in the United States. Nevertheless, to this day, 'Like Crazy' RIAA Platinum certification for RIAA Platinum certification has not been submitted and is therefore unlisted. RIAA certification helps boost an artist's profile in the music industry and can provide a variety of benefits that can lead to lucrative licensing deals. Therefore, it is a worthy certification. “I ask for it.”
The separation of streaming totals for the Korean and English versions of Like Crazy Spotify will be explained. "On March 26, 2023, the title song 'Like Crazy' of Jimin's first mini album ranked first on Spotify's global chart. Afterwards, for unknown reasons, along with errors such as the song's credits being suddenly modified, The two versions of streaming have been separated. This will inevitably be detrimental to Spotify's global charts, Spotify's charts in each country, and year-end cumulative streaming statistics. Spotify said that this phenomenon occurred at the request of the agency. , we need an explanation from your company that fans can understand about this.
Explain and apologize for not restocking the Like Crazy US single CD. “The 'Like Crazy' single CD in the US has not been restocked after the first sale was sold out. This song was repeatedly predicted to be a candidate for the BBMA (Bill Board Music Awards) Top Selling Song category, and in fact became the first Korean solo artist to be nominated in that category. However, there was no support from your company to win the main award during the counting period, and local fans in the United States also continued to request resale, but your company did not even respond to this. “We demand an explanation and apology for this so that something like this never happens again.”

Stark Tower, 200 Park Avenue, Midtown Manhattan, NYC-United States. 18/01/2025 23:47 P.M (listen to the music for an improved reading experience) _____________________________
___________________________________
The workshop had become a crime scene reconstruction in all but name. Scattered across the tables were the remnants of Shade’s deadly masterpieces: a scorched circuit board from a hacked drone, fragments of a synthetic neural net burned beyond recognition, and glass vials containing nanobot residue extracted from a victim’s bloodstream. Tony Stark moved through the room like a ghost, his normally sharp wit replaced by a cold, calculated focus.
The holographic wall before him was alive with data. Crime scene photos floated beside CAD schematics of devices used in the killings. Heatmaps and timestamps were overlaid with surveillance feeds, all connected by glowing blue threads that shifted and updated as new information came in.
J.A.R.V.I.S.’s voice echoed in the silence. “Sir, I’ve processed the autopsy report for Dr. Mercer. The cause of death was mechanical asphyxiation. The drone utilized a custom grappling mechanism to—” Tony cut him off, waving his hand to expand the drone’s design schematics. “I know how it killed her, J.A.R.V.I.S. What I need to know is why that drone could bypass her own security protocols. She built those herself.”
The drone in question was splayed out on one of the workbenches, its outer shell removed to expose its circuitry. Tony picked up a magnifying glass, inspecting the board’s solder points. His gaze sharpened when he noticed something out of place.
“These connections... they’ve been modified,” he muttered. “This wasn’t an after-market hack. This was done during assembly.”
He pulled up a hologram of the drone’s manufacturing log. The drone was supposed to be a prototype, not for public use, and every component was supposed to be accounted for. Yet here it was, implicated in a murder. “J.A.R.V.I.S., cross-reference this serial number with the manufacturer’s inventory. Find out if there are other drones like this one that went missing.”
Seconds later, J.A.R.V.I.S. replied. “Sir, the serial number does not appear in the manufacturer’s official logs. It’s as if this drone was fabricated off the record.” Tony’s jaw tightened. “An inside job, then. Someone got access to their assembly lines.”
He turned back to the holographic wall and zoomed in on another piece of evidence: the melted remains of a server rack from Dr. Aaron Fielding’s lab. The servers had been rigged to overload, sending a lethal electrical discharge through the room. Tony had already reconstructed the event digitally, watching the moment the surge fried Fielding’s security systems before turning on the man himself.
“Run the analysis on the discharge pattern again,” Tony ordered. The hologram shifted, displaying a 3D model of the event. Tiny markers appeared, showing the flow of electricity. Tony stared at the pattern, something about it gnawing at him. “That’s... too controlled,” he muttered. “It’s like they designed the overload to target Fielding specifically, not just the equipment.”
He zoomed in further, focusing on the microscopic residue left behind on the server casing. The forensic team had flagged it as an exotic alloy—rare, expensive, and used primarily in military applications.
“What kind of murderer has access to this level of tech?” Tony mused aloud. “J.A.R.V.I.S., find out who’s been buying this alloy in bulk over the last five years.”
As the AI processed the request, Tony moved to another table, this one holding fragments of a nanobot casing. These were pulled from the bloodstream of Dr. Claire Xu. The nanobots had been designed for precise medical interventions, but someone had reprogrammed them to trigger a fatal chain reaction in her cells.
“Their programming wasn’t overwritten,” Tony said, studying the microscopic etchings on the fragments. “It was replaced entirely. That takes time. And skill.”
He projected a holographic reconstruction of the nanobots’ behavior. They had been introduced into Dr. Xu’s system through an innocuous-looking vial—a fake supplement she’d likely consumed without a second thought. Tony watched the simulation of the bots activating, spreading like wildfire through her body.
“J.A.R.V.I.S., any progress on tracing the origin of those nanobots?”“Yes, sir. The nanobots were part of a limited-run batch produced for clinical trials. The batch was reported stolen six months ago.”
Tony frowned, cross-referencing the theft report with Shade’s timeline. The stolen nanobots lined up perfectly with Xu’s murder, but something still didn’t fit. “Why wait six months to use them?” he muttered. “Shade’s deliberate, but they’re not sloppy. What were they doing with the nanobots all that time?”
He pulled up Shade’s message left at the latest crime scene:
“You build, and you break. I break, and I build. The cycle ends with me.”
Tony read the words over and over, trying to decipher the intent. Shade wasn’t just killing—they were making a point. But what?
His gaze shifted to the holographic timeline of the murders. Each victim had been taken out with precision, their deaths tied to their own inventions. But as he looked closer, he noticed another pattern: a two-week gap between each killing, almost to the hour.
“J.A.R.V.I.S., is there a significance to this timing? Why two weeks?”“Analyzing, sir.”
As Tony waited, his mind raced. He thought about the clues—custom drones, stolen nanobots, hacked systems. Each piece of tech had been turned against its creator, but there was something bigger at play. Shade wasn’t just showing off their skill; they were proving a point.
“Sir,” J.A.R.V.I.S. interrupted, “I’ve found a connection. Each victim’s death coincided with the release of a major research paper or patent application in their field.”
Tony’s eyes widened. “They’re not just killing people. They’re trying to kill progress.”
He stood, staring at the wall, piecing it all together. Shade wasn’t some rogue hacker or deranged killer—they were a strategist, dismantling innovation one step at a time. The murders weren’t random; they were part of a larger plan.
“J.A.R.V.I.S., we need to predict their next move,” Tony said, his voice sharp. “Cross-reference every active patent application, research paper, and tech conference scheduled in the next two weeks. Focus on anything tied to AI, robotics, or advanced materials.”
As the AI began its search, Tony turned back to the evidence. Shade had left him a trail, but this wasn’t just a game—it was a war. And if Shade thought they could outsmart Tony Stark, they were about to learn how wrong they were.
Tony Stark's mind whirred with thoughts like a well-oiled machine, but even he could feel the tension of the moment—a case this intricate was like untangling the wires of a self-destructive bomb, with each step taken possibly leading him closer to an irreversible detonation. He leaned back in his chair, staring at the now massive, sprawling map on the holographic wall in front of him, a map not just of the crime scenes, but of an intricate web of people, companies, and criminal syndicates—each thread interconnected in ways too complex to be a simple coincidence.
Shade was not just a hacker, not just a killer. This was a war, one fought in the shadows, with every move calculated to perfection. Tony knew his usual methods of detection and decryption wouldn’t be enough this time. This wasn’t just about finding evidence; it was about understanding the unseen forces at play, the motivations behind the murders, the deeper conspiracy woven throughout. And that meant thinking like a criminal mastermind—a tech-savvy one with a vendetta, but one who also understood the delicate balance between chaos and control.
He took a deep breath, his gaze never leaving the wall, his mind shifting gears like an engineer meticulously aligning each component of a machine. The pieces clicked into place.
The Murders It had all started with Dr. Mercer. The shock of her death had shaken the tech community, but it was her life's work that had gotten her killed. A leading authority on quantum encryption, she had cracked a code so advanced that it could revolutionize cyber defense—if it was allowed to see the light of day. Tony had dissected the murder forensics already. The drone that had killed her had been expertly hacked, bypassing her most sophisticated security measures. The killer hadn’t just known the technical specifications of her system, they had also understood how her mind worked. Her work was more than just encryption—it was a puzzle, a reflection of her genius. But someone had gone a step further, using it as a tool to erase her from history, as if she never existed.
“J.A.R.V.I.S., pull up Dr. Mercer’s last few communications. Focus on her encrypted files,” Tony murmured. “Something in there will connect the dots.”
“Pulling them up now, sir,” J.A.R.V.I.S. replied, displaying Dr. Mercer’s encrypted communication logs. As Tony skimmed through them, he noted an unusual pattern. Every file had been accessed remotely, but each access came from a different geographical location. Tony’s mind pieced the puzzle together, and a sudden realization hit him like a jolt of electricity.
"Remote access, multiple locations, but there's a constant pattern of activity—a single entity coordinating these accesses." He stood up, tapping a holographic map of the world. "Whoever this is, they’ve been tracking Mercer’s work long before the murder. They’ve been waiting for the perfect moment."
"Indeed, sir. I’ve also found a link between the IP addresses used in accessing Dr. Mercer’s files and a high-profile contract between Vanguard Industries and Armstrong International," J.A.R.V.I.S. reported.
Tony’s fingers flew over the table. “That’s it. These companies weren’t just competitors—they were the perfect stage for a larger operation. This wasn’t about killing Dr. Mercer—it was about controlling the innovation. Whoever Shade is, they’ve been manipulating the entire landscape of tech research for years. And this was their first public strike.”
The Pattern of the Murders Tony stared at the timeline of the other victims: Dr. Aaron Fielding, Dr. Claire Xu, and several others. Each had their unique contributions to tech, and each had their own invention turned into a weapon of destruction. But Tony was looking for something more—something that connected the victims beyond their brilliance.
He narrowed his focus on the gap between the murders: two weeks, almost exactly, between each death. Each killing tied to the release of a groundbreaking research paper or the unveiling of a major tech breakthrough. It was no coincidence. Shade wasn’t just killing inventors. They were controlling the release of the most significant discoveries in tech history, manipulating the very pace of progress.
"J.A.R.V.I.S., cross-reference the dates of each murder with major tech conferences and patent applications. I want to know if these deaths coincide with the unveiling of anything big."
The AI complied, and a moment later, a surprising result appeared: Each murder had been perfectly timed to coincide with the release of a major patent or announcement from a different tech giant. Not just any patents, though—these were patents for projects on the brink of reshaping the future. Quantum computing, artificial intelligence, neuroprosthetics. But there was something else—each of the patents had involved either Vanguard or Armstrong in some capacity.
"These companies aren’t just on the periphery," Tony muttered, deep in thought. "They're at the core of every major breakthrough. And Shade is systematically eliminating the minds behind them. They’re controlling the flow of the future, and their weapon of choice is murder."
The True Enemy Tony leaned in, zooming in on one specific name that had been recurring across all his investigations: Orion Ventures. This shell company had provided the resources, funding, and materials for both Vanguard and Armstrong. Tony had suspected that something was off about them, but now the truth was becoming clearer: Orion Ventures was acting as the intermediary between the legitimate tech world and the underground criminal syndicates, like Legion. Legion wasn’t just an arms dealer network—it was a resource broker for black-market tech, and their reach extended far deeper than Tony had initially thought.
"J.A.R.V.I.S., trace the financials of Orion Ventures. See who’s been pulling the strings behind it," Tony ordered.
Moments later, J.A.R.V.I.S. displayed the intricate financial web. A series of shell corporations led back to an individual with a surprisingly low profile: Rafael Sorrentino. The name was a whisper in the corridors of both the criminal underworld and the highest echelons of tech—part entrepreneur, part mercenary, Sorrentino had a reputation for being able to make problems disappear. He was the perfect figure to orchestrate this covert war on innovation.
Tony smirked, leaning back. "So this isn’t just some rogue killer, is it? It’s a carefully orchestrated conspiracy, a tech war waged by a criminal mastermind with a network of corrupt corporations and mafia connections. Shade is just a pawn in the game."
But Tony wasn’t done yet. There was still something off about the way the murders had unfolded—something that didn’t add up.
“J.A.R.V.I.S., analyze the nanobot data again. I’ve been thinking…” Tony murmured as he stared at the data on Dr. Claire Xu’s death. “The bots weren’t just designed for a lethal purpose. They were programmed to replicate and adapt. This kind of technology doesn’t just exist on the black market, it’s the product of cutting-edge medical research—research that comes from labs like Fielding’s, Mercer’s, and Xu’s.”
"Indeed, sir," J.A.R.V.I.S. replied. "The nanobots found in Dr. Xu’s bloodstream were derived from a patented technology created by Vanguard Industries, but the modification was done with an advanced understanding of bioengineering. The code used to reprogram them could only have come from one source: Rafael Sorrentino himself."
Tony’s eyes widened. "Sorrentino’s the one who's been engineering these tech deaths. He’s been pulling the strings all along. Shade’s not the endgame. Sorrentino’s the one orchestrating the tech murder syndicate, using his pawns to eliminate the tech world’s best and brightest."
Tony stood up, pacing back and forth. "Sorrentino wants to control the flow of technology, not just steal it. He’s eliminating the minds who could stand in his way. But there's one thing he’s underestimated: me."

Florida neighbors band together to recover (AP) When ankle-deep floodwaters from Hurricane Helene bubbled up through the floors of their home, Kat Robinson-Malone and her husband sent a late-night text message to their neighbors two doors down: “Hey, we’re coming.” The couple waded through the flooded street to the elevated front porch of Chris and Kara Sundar, whose home was built on higher ground, and handed over their 8-year-old daughter and a gas-powered generator. The Sundars’ lime-green house in southern Tampa also became a refuge for Brooke and Adam Carstensen, whose house next door to Robinson-Malone also flooded. The three families met years earlier when their children became playmates, and the adults’ friendships deepened during the coronavirus pandemic in 2020. So when Helene and Hurricane Milton struck Florida within two weeks of each other, the neighbors closed ranks as one big extended family, cooking meals together, taking turns watching children and cleaning out their damaged homes. “Everyone has, like, the chain saw or a tarp,” Robinson-Malone said Sunday. “But really the most important thing for us was the community we built. And that made all the difference for the hurricane rescue and the recovery. And now, hopefully, the restoration.”
Thousands march in Spain to demand affordable housing (Reuters) Thousands protested on Sunday in Madrid to demand more affordable housing amid rising anger from Spaniards who feel they are being priced out of the market. “Spaniards cannot live in their own cities. They are forcing us out of the cities,” said nurse Blanca Prieto, 33. Spain is struggling to balance promoting tourism, a key driver of its economy, and addressing citizens’ concerns over unaffordable high rents due to gentrification and landlords shifting to more lucrative tourist rentals. Residents of the Canary Islands and Malaga have also staged protests this year against the rise in tourist rentals. Seasonal hospitality workers struggle to find accommodation in these tourism hot spots, with many resorting to sleeping in caravans or even their cars.
Russian Strikes on Ukrainian Ports Target Shipping (NYT) Russia has stepped up its assaults on Black Sea port infrastructure and civilian shipping in recent days, in what Ukraine says is an attempt to disrupt its exports and damage its economy. The attacks are part of an intensifying campaign of strikes on the city of Odesa and the region along Ukraine’s southern coast. Since last Monday, Russia has carried out five attacks in the area, killing 14 civilians and injuring 28, the U.N.’s Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine reported on Friday, citing local authorities. The strikes on ships were mostly aimed at those flying flags of small countries unlikely to retaliate against Russia. Last Monday, a container ship under the flag of Palau was hit, Ukrainian official said. The day before that, a missile damaged a vessel under a Saint Kitts and Nevis flag, according to the regional military administration.
Pakistan’s internet slows to a crawl as blame falls on government (Washington Post) Mobile internet in Pakistan has been painfully slow for over two months. Now, technology experts and political activists are accusing the government of intentionally throttling the internet to suppress political protesters. Digital rights activists fear that Pakistani officials are installing new controls to more tightly monitor social media and to censor political content.
China’s ‘New Great Wall’ Casts a Shadow on Nepal (NYT) The Chinese fence traces a furrow in the Himalayas, its barbed wire and concrete ramparts separating Tibet from Nepal. Here, in one of the more isolated places on earth, China’s security cameras keep watch alongside armed sentries in guard towers. High on the Tibetan Plateau, the Chinese have carved a 600-feet-long message on a hillside: “Long live the Chinese Communist Party,” inscribed in characters that can be read from orbit. Just across the border, in Nepal’s Humla District, residents contend that along several points of this distant frontier, China is encroaching on Nepali territory. The Nepalis have other complaints, too. Chinese security forces are pressuring ethnic Tibetan Nepalis not to display images of the Dalai Lama, the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader, in Nepali villages near the border, they say. “This is the new Great Wall of China,” said Jeevan Bahadur Shahi, the former provincial chief minister of the area. China’s fencing along the edge of Nepal’s Humla District is just one segment of a fortification network thousands of miles long that Xi Jinping’s government has built to reinforce remote reaches, control rebellious populations and, in some cases, push into territory that other nations consider their own.
Sri Lanka closes schools as floods hammer the capital (AP) Sri Lanka closed schools in the capital Colombo and suburbs on Monday as heavy rains triggered floods in many parts of the island nation. Heavy downpours over the weekend have wreaked havoc in many parts of the country, flooding homes, fields and roads. Three people drowned, while some 134,000 people have been affected by flooding, according to the country’s Disaster Management Centre. Sri Lanka has been grappling with severe weather conditions since May, mostly caused by heavy monsoon rains. In June, 16 people died due to floods and mudslides.
Can the Government Get People to Have More Babies? (NYT) In 1989, Japan seemed to be an unstoppable economic superpower. Its companies were overtaking competitors and gobbling up American icons like Rockefeller Center. But inside the country, the government had identified a looming, slow-motion crisis: The fertility rate had fallen to a record low. Policymakers called it the “1.57 shock,” citing the projected average number of children that women would have over their childbearing years. If births continued to decline, they warned, the consequences would be disastrous. Taxes would rise or social security coffers would shrink. Japanese children would lack sufficient peer interaction. Society would lose its vitality as the supply of young workers dwindled. It was time to act. Starting in the 1990s, Japan began rolling out policies and pronouncements designed to spur people to have more babies. The government required employers to offer child care leave of up to a year, opened more subsidized day care slots, exhorted men to do housework and take paternity leave, and called on companies to shorten work hours. In 1992, the government started paying direct cash allowances for having even one child (earlier, they had started with the third child), and bimonthly payments for all children were later introduced. None of this has worked. Last year, Japan’s fertility rate stood at 1.2. In Tokyo, the rate is now less than one. The number of babies born in Japan last year fell to the lowest level since the government started collecting statistics in 1899. Now the rest of the developed world is looking more and more like Japan.
The Brewing War With Israel Is Boosting Iran’s Young Hard-Liners (Foreign Affairs) The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei’s influential, ideological armed force, has been riven by divisions between its older, conservative commanders and its younger, radical ranks. The former generally favor exercising some restraint when it comes to Israel, whereas the latter want to go directly after the Islamic Republic’s nemesis. Typically, the older elite have held more influence with the supreme leader. But as more and more IRGC commanders and partners have been killed, the younger generations have gained the upper hand. They have done so by questioning the competence of their elders but also by suggesting that some IRGC elites are actually Israeli assets, including Esmail Ghaani, the IRGC commander who controls Iran’s Quds force—which, in turn, controls Iran’s network of proxy militias. After Israel killed Nasrallah, Khamenei’s calculus appears to have been shaped by this younger cohort. It is part of why Khamenei launched the October 1 attack.
Netanyahu Is Killing Us To Set Us Free? Logic, Grief And Resistance In Beirut (Daraj/Lebanon) Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed us, the Lebanese people, and offered us a gift: a massacre. He sent soldiers to the Lebanese border town of Maroun al-Ras, raised an Israeli flag there, and sent the picture to the whole world. Netanyahu, who has so far killed more than 40,000 Palestinians and about 3,000 Lebanese, addressed us directly—and said that he is killing us for the sake of our future [by destroying Hezbollah]. Netanyahu tells us that he wants to give us after killing us, a homeland, one that is no more than a graveyard and no less than a colony. This speech he addressed to us is truly amazing, a summary of what awaits us if Netanyahu, owner of the “massacre doctrine,” achieves what he wants.
U.S. to Deploy Missile Defense System and About 100 Troops to Israel (NYT) The United States is sending an advanced missile defense system to Israel, along with about 100 American troops to operate it, the Pentagon announced on Sunday. The move will put American troops operating the ground-based interceptor, which is designed to defend against ballistic missiles, closer to the widening war in the Middle East. It comes after Iran launched about 200 missiles at Israel on Oct. 1 and as Israel plans its retaliatory attack. The THAAD battery, a mobile defense system, will give the Israel Defense Forces another layer of protection to defend cities, troops and installations from short- and intermediate-range ballistic missiles like those deployed by Iran in its last attack.
Netanyahu tells U.S. that Israel will strike Iranian military, not nuclear or oil, targets, officials say (Washington Post) Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has told the Biden administration he is willing to strike military rather than oil or nuclear facilities in Iran, according to two officials familiar with the matter, suggesting a more limited counterstrike aimed at preventing a full-scale war. In the two weeks since Iran’s latest missile barrage on Israel, its second direct attack in six months, the Middle East has braced for Israel’s promised response, fearing the two countries’ decades-long shadow war could explode into a head-on military confrontation. It comes at a politically fraught time for Washington, less than a month before the election, and President Joe Biden has said publicly he would not support an Israeli strike on nuclear-related sites. When Biden and Netanyahu spoke Wednesday—their first call in more than seven weeks after months of rising tensions between the two men—the prime minister said he was planning to target military infrastructure in Iran, according to a U.S. official and an official familiar with the matter.
Is Israel deploying a ‘surrender or starve’ strategy in Gaza? (Washington Post) Northern Gaza, already pummeled by a year of ruinous war, is in the grips of a punishing new Israeli offensive. Israeli forces encircled the battered Jabalya refugee camp in a bid to “systematically dismantle terrorist infrastructure,” according to an IDF statement. Israel issued evacuation orders to some 400,000 remaining residents in northern Gaza, telling them to go to areas farther south that are already teeming with the displaced and still hit by Israeli bombardments. Airstrikes have killed dozens. Aid workers described a catastrophic scene. “It is like hell to be honest,” Fares Afana, the head of ambulance services in northern Gaza, told The Washington Post in a voice note on Sunday. Israeli forces were attacking the Jabalya refugee camp “for the third time and its surroundings in Beit Lahya and Beit Hanoun,” Afana said, and the camp was surrounded “from all sides.” Humanitarian organization Doctors Without Borders said Friday that thousands of people—including five of its staffers—were trapped in the Jabalya camp. “Nobody is allowed to get in or out—anyone who tries is getting shot,” Sarah Vuylsteke, a project coordinator for the organization, said in a news release. The intensifying siege will “continue as long as required in order to achieve its objectives,” the IDF said in a statement. It comes alongside an apparent blockade. No food trucks have entered at all in October. Such a tactic may fuel further accusations that Israel is deliberately starving Palestinians in Gaza.

File: Omega Mart
SCP#: AIS
Code Name: O- O- O- Omega Mart! You have no idea what's in store for YOU! ;-)
Object Class: Homager
Special Containment Procedures: The area where SCP-AIS is located has been sealed off from the rest of the city of Las Vegas. Around it a building was constructed that is meant to resemble a large storage area for a local construction company. Anyone who comes close by is to be escorted away regardless of their reasoning. Due SCP-AIS being a creation of Group of Interest: Are We Cool Yet? Mobile Task Force Upsilon-23 “Art Critics” is responsible for assisting Foundation Doctors and Researchers as they explore SCP-AIS. Anomalous items found within SCP-AIS should be tested within SCP-AIS as doing so outside can be hazardous. Mobile Task Force Dionysus-8 “Market Crashers” are responsible for assisting MTF Upsilon-23 taking down any anomalous creatures that might be spawned from experiments within SCP-AIS gone wrong.
Mobile Task Force Ares-9 “Mall Security” is responsible for defending Foundation staff against intruders from Group of Interest: The Black Queen’s Insurgency, Are We Cool Yet?, Dr. Wondertainment, Vikander-Kneed Technical Media, and The Serpent's Hand. Greazeburger Incorporated has been reported sometimes trying to infiltrate SCP-AIS but it's normally not that hard to simply escort them out.
Description: SCP-AIS is an art project created by Group of Interest: Are We Cool Yet? The result of this project is a Supermart called “Omega Mart” which contains every type of food, drug, and product that a normal store might possess both in this reality and other realities. A majority of the products and items sold within SCP-AIS do not exist in our reality often existing in alternative timelines and different dimensions especially ones were common social laws and even physical laws are not the same as ours. Shockingly trying to get all the products does nothing as they always restock themselves within 24 hours and sometimes are replaced with entirely new products. How Are We Cool Yet? managed to create such a structure with so many anomalous items and never runs out of them is unknown.
The interior of SCP-AIS is not hazardous in any way but can be quite difficult to traverse as certain areas defy the laws of physics as well. Some areas it is common for the gravity to flow to the walls rather than the ground. There are spatial distortions causing certain products to be distorted when placed in a certain area but perfectly normal when placed in another. There are even sections that don’t sell anything but seem to be large optical illusions that can make someone have a headache if they stay there for too long. The only true hazard of SCP-AIS is to obtain the wrong product or use a product in the wrong way, a mistake that is unfortunately very easy to make. Please see Addendum X-66 for details.

Addendum X-66
The following is a short list of the anomalous items that can be obtained within SCP-AIS. It should be noted that though some items have prices they do not require money to be activated.
***
“Zlag” - Type of juice made with apple, ginger, and lemongrass. Is noted to actually be pretty good.
“Mrs. Dram's Romantic Dinner in a Can” - A tin can that when open seems to be empty but when used in a pour out genster instantly manifested a table with a clover over it, two chairs, a nicely lit candle on the table, two plates with fork, knife, and spoon next to it, and even a server who already has prepared a delicious meal that the one who used the can and their significant other or desired crush will enjoy. After serving the two if they are present he will manifest a violin and play lovely music. Has actually become popular among Foundation staff who need to set up dates fast.
“Dark Matter Spray” - Anomalous spray can that seemingly releases nothing but is actually spraying Dark Matter into the air. Has been harvested heavily by the Foundation for spatial experiments.
“Plausible Deniability” - Seemingly a normal stack of papers but once one comes into contact with a law enforcer or a lawyer it shows a legal document that can get the holder out of any situation. Often being signed by a politician that can legally assist in the area, the highest ranking it has been known to utilize is representatives of the UN and even the entire UN Council itself. The Foundation often uses it to assist in making cover stories and has distributed them to our allies at the Horizon Initiative and the Global Occult Coalition, the ladder of which was outraged such things exist.
“Omega Mart Lemons” - Living Lemons that have an eye growing out of them, no other anomalous traits have been observed as of late. The Ethics Committee banned all research regarding these anomalous items and ordered to have a small portion contained at Site-AA and the rest be left alone.
Glorbox - [data expunged]. [data expunged]. [data expunged]. [data expunged]. [data expunged]. The sole surviving instance has been stored at Site-[data expunged].
Omega Cola - Metaphysical Cola, Can be poured and placed anywhere even inside photos, books, audio recordings, TV recordings, and TV shows. Once this his done any character or person who interacts with it, forever alters that recording or piece of media. Though thankfully testing has shown it is restricted to the recording or media piece affected and doesn’t affect any other showings of the media piece or people involved in the recordings. However it’s possible to reach into affected media and recordings and getting a brand new bottle of Omega Cola as a result. Researchers have noted it’s too sugary and doesn’t taste good at all so there’s really no point to having some.
“Collector's Edition Sliced Meats” - A DVD collection case but contains disk shaped slices of various meat instead of DVDs. Extremely hazardous as looking at the meat for too long can cause you to only say “Meat” for the rest of your life. Researchers who experienced this have had to take amnestic treatment and mimetic therapy to fix their speech.
“First Contact” - Box filled with strange powder, once contact is made with this powder you will immediately meet with a manifestation of your perfect soul mate. The O5 Council have ordered all Foundation staff to stay away from this product even if there are Staff members who are lonely.
“Mythic Farms Leprechaun Kidneys” - seemingly no different to the kidneys of a chipmunk but once consumed raw grant the consumer an unusual amount of luck for 24 hours. Does absolutely nothing if consumed after being cocked. Researchers often like to eat one that way if they encounter a hazardous anomaly they will normally end up okay due to the luck granted.
“Zalgitos” - Tiny pillows that are held inside a normal chip bag, are edible and have been noted to taste like Doritos by researchers.
"Who Told You This Was Butter?" - Strange cream that greatly resembles "I can't believe it's not butter" product. Is a cream that can change flavor depending on what the user wants though it can never change into the flavor of butter.
"Individually Wrapped Wheat Squares" - a single slice of bread that has no anomalous properties as far as scans can tell. However, when consumed the user will not get hungry for 48 hours. Has been utilized by MTF units during long and harsh missions.
"Lil Meow Gruel For Cats" - Does not possess anomalous properties but instead is anomalous in the type of meat it has in the cat food such as "Lonely Hiker", "Healthy Wolf", and "Mammoth Chunks".
"Rabbit Shards" - shards of glass that are actually quite floppy but can be cooked into its typical hard glass form. Can also be consumed and tastes exactly like rabbit. Sometimes collected by MTF units as emergency rations though they are notably difficult to cook.
"Whale Song Deodorant" - Deodorant that smells like a cool and fresh breeze of the ocean side. Fills the wearer's head with lovely Whale Songs allowing them to be calm. Popular among Foundation staff that want to relax while smelling good.
"Tooth Slime" - Sentient slime in a toothpaste bottle that will latch onto the teeth of a nearby user and start eating the bad bacteria and cavities on the teeth. Has allows Foundation staff to get whiter and stronger teeth but the fact that the slime is alive makes them very uncomfortable and thus most don't use it often.
***
SCP-AIS was discovered in 2012 when a series of strange commercials telling the viewers about “Omega Mart” which sold otherworldly and often nonsensical products. Originally thought to be another vile plot of Group of Interest: Vikander-Kneed Technical Media; Foundation agents were sent to the location provided to investigate. However, upon arriving at [data expunged], Las Vegas they found SCP-AIS and a sign in the front which read the following.
“Omega Mart, the only store you’ll ever need to go to ever again. We possess everything you need, everything you don’t, and everything you’ll need eventually. Nothing is suspicious here and if you think otherwise, you're probably asking in the wrong place, so stop asking questions and instead answer one instead, Are We Cool Yet?”
SCP-AIS was immediately locked down in response though very rarely do members of Are We Cool Yet? ever actually attack and try to regain control. More often than not other Groups of Interest have tried to enter SCP-AIS in hopes of getting their hands on anomalous products and either exploit them or weaponize them.
