so you know how technology has been going backwards in several aspects for the past years. removal of headphone jacks and cd players, cheaply made yet severely overpriced phones or tablets with garbage batteries and much more.

imagine if this accidentally creates some backwards effect in the future, once there are robots walking the streets among the humans where humans find robot models with old tech and features especially attractive. partly because of nostalgia but also out of the simple practicality those features used to bring.

imagine a human flirting with a bot like "woooow i had no idea you got a headphone jack... what else could you show me?~ " and the bot is like ??? these are the most basic of features -outdated even- what the hell are they on about ??? but still gets flustered because its the most unusual pickup line the bot has received.

i can see this happening with other features like buttons even, seeing as so much of todays tech is still going for that slippery flat screen aesthetic.

i think this would also create incels/chads among the robots, the ones with all the latest systems and parts but still no human will look their way. and the ones who do are obviously very superficial and rarely any fun. among the other bots this would plant a seed of insecurities about their own parts, not knowing that they are actually much more desirable than the "pimped out upgraders".

I feel like people whose main complaint with Companion is the logic and word building behind the robots is kinda missing the forest for the trees. The presence of the robots is meant to feed into the themes of power dynamics in relationships, male entitlement, and honesty/trust in relationships both romantic and platonic. The hand-waving of how the Companions can feel emotions and pain and can cry are there because it's more about their relationships with their partners and not getting bogged down by the sci-fi details.

Companion is focused on the pathos, but if you want a sci-fi movie about relationships with artificial beings that moreso explores the ethics and logics of it, then I recommend both Ex Machina and the Black Mirror episode BRB (which both star Domnhall Gleeson which is kinda funny)
