Book Review: Lone Women by Victor LaValle

Lone Women is unusual, unsettling, and haunting. It's a genre-bending story about a Black woman named Adelaide Henry who leaves her home in California in the 1800's to settle on a claim in the desolate landscape of Montana, carrying with her a past full of secrets and a steamer trunk that cannot be left unattended for suspicious reasons unknown.

This is an atmospheric novel above all else, and I've never read anything quite like it. It's hushed. Suspenseful. Eerie. Vacant. There's a lingering sense of disquiet that permeates from the first page, ushering readers into Adelaide's world at a time when homesteading was starting to take off and women could set out west to make new independent lives for themselves.

I liked the historicism this provided, with me being bestowed with the opportunity to journey along with Adelaide as she braved the harsh conditions of the midwest alone and as she collided with some strange folks along the way. I also liked the women supporting women camaraderie that was both founded and championed, because it proved to be a satisfying foil to the secluded, dangerous-feeling atmosphere the characters abided in.

For me, though, I will say the most propulsive thing about the whole book was waiting to learn what was hidden inside the trunk. That's what gave the story its pulse. That's what gave it a creepy and windswept little heartbeat.

Definitely one you should pick up if you're looking for something different!

Art Summary of 2023

I kind of wish I had taken this thing to the next level and used a picture with a clone in it for March and November as well (I looked it up now, I very much could have added my Fives portrait or that first pinup-y illustration of Rex for March, and a very cute drawing of a clone OC and his dog (of whom I am promised to get partial custody, and how cool is that really?? and I am so very excited to show him off next year!!)) but it was also the year of Din in big hats as well, so I let those pieces stay :) You'll just have to take my word that there is a Rex in the July picture too.

I feel ike I have learned so much, and also have grown a lot more confident in my skills as an artist; I've learned that I love drawing backgrounds to make a "full" illustration, that intricate little details fascinate me to no end, that I can do fun things with lineart and my version of cell shading but I also miss dedicating the time to a full painting; and that harsh/stronger light reflecting off of darker skin is still something I'll have to study further next year.

Thank you everyone for your continued support in 2023! I have so many kind and enthusiastic tags screenshotted and saved for the days when I inevitably doubt what I do, it means so so much to me! I'm very grateful for the old and new friends I'd made or reconnected with this year ❤️❤️❤️ - and hello to new followers too, I hope you'll keep enjoying what I do here ❤️

love spending a whole day on one (1) thing that u thought would be like a quick small little task before breakfast, and the only thing u managed to do for it was to make urself way more confused (tho I did spend couple hours for cleaning (the best procrastination activity)). maybe i will elaborate later maybe i won’t but something that i did not catch until rewatching little women (2019) is how greta gerwig has this common thread tying her movies together and that is change. like, yeah okay all movies have change they have to have change in order for the narrative to progress. but lady bird, little women, and barbie are all connected by their themes of change and growing up and not wanting to grow up and having to anyway. it’s why beth has to die in little women—beth represents innocence and childhood and therefore has to die; it’s why lady bird calls herself christine in the final moments of lady bird—her mother was right; it’s the entire thesis of barbie (2023) etc etc.

If you are one of those people who doubts the transformative power of the arts, then read this. If you already have an idea of the link that exists between the arts and your own personal well-being, then read this.

Drarry microfic: make a wish

They were walking through the park, the warm spring sun shining down on them. It was a beautiful day today. The perfect day to spend the afternoon at the park.

Scorpius ran in front of them, giggling and pointing at all different kinds of flowers. “Look, Dad!” he suddenly exclaimed. He pointed at something in the grass and ran to it. He came back with a proud smile on his face. “A dandelion!”

Harry and Draco exchanged a look, before Harry turned back to Scorpius, lifting the dandelion up to Scorp’s mouth. “It must be the first one of the season,” he said softly. “Blow on it and make a wish.”

Closing his eyes, Scorpius took a deep breath and blew on the dandelion. He mumbled something they couldn’t quite hear. His smile grew even wider when he opened his eyes again.

“What did you wish for?” Draco asked curiously.

Scorpius shook his head, his face turning serious. “I can’t tell,” he said. He lifted his chin. “My wish won’t come true if I tell you.”

“Smart man.” Harry nodded.

“Of course, I am,” Scorpius said. He turned to Draco then. “What did you wish for, Dad?”

Draco shrugged. “I can’t tell you.” He leaned closer to his son and whispered in his ear, “Though, I think my wish has already come true when I met your Papa.”

June 14th, 2025 (I've been waiting for you my whole life) Sambucky, T, 3.5k

A year after getting engaged, Sam and Bucky get married. A little oneshot that takes place after the events of my fic "sounds like an angel (he might be a demon)".

The one with groceries and bad coffee buddie, G, 1.3k

It’s fucking coffee, of all things, that finally does it. Or, Buck buys Eddie's favorite brand of coffee for his loft, and Eddie's brain short-circuits, leading to a realization.

Fine buddie, 1.6k

Eddie’s foot feels heavy on the gas pedal, while his hands grip the steering wheel tightly, to prevent them from shaking. He’s driving almost on autopilot, while trying his best to compartmentalize and focus on just getting to the hospital, trying not to think about Buck- about what’s happening in the back of the ambulance right now. Or, after the drive to the hospital after Buck's hit by lightning, Eddie loses it. Sort of 6x10 coda.

He can’t help but think that this is some kind of sick joke from the universe, which he doesn’t believe but he knows Buck would. “The universe is screaming at you and you refuse to listen” is what Buck said once, it feels like a lifetime ago. He didn't believe it, then, either. And now the universe is mocking Eddie, having him have to tell their kid about Buck, just like Buck had to tell him about the shooting. Eddie doesn’t know how Buck did it, how he had the strength, because he’s on the verge of breaking down and shattering into a million little pieces. Or, Eddie goes home to tell Christopher about Buck getting hurt.

“We got time, Eds.” Buck chuckles. “Not enough.” Eddie’s voice breaks a little. Buck squeezes his hand. “We almost ran out of time, and I can’t just wait until it happens again, Buck. Besides, life is short. We’ll never really have enough time, because a lifetime with you wouldn’t be enough." Or, Buck wakes up from his coma, and Eddie, done with wasting time, confesses his feelings.

(wrote this one when i was bored in class in college about a year before I posted this and idk if I like it tbh but it's posted haha)

But Eddie’s thigh is pressed against his, and somehow his hand is on Buck’s knee now, and Eddie’s looking at him in such a way, that it makes Buck hot all over – or, hotter, his palms are sweating, actually. “And I feel like you are doing it on purpose.” or, Eddie is a tease, Buck is horny and jealous of Eddie dating, and a regular evening takes an unexpected turn.

Or, Buck accidentally sends a nude and a spicy text to Eddie - things escalate from there.
