Goth-Pod Ep 8: BruceMan
Welcome back and buckle up! Host Juda Boone contemplates and conspires about the #1 ship of Gotham City: Bruce Wayne x Batman.
[goth-pod is a fictional, in-universe podcast based on the DC comics universe. Juda Boone is an original fictional character, not based on any real person or known comic book character.]
Transcript under the cut
Hello everyone and welcome back! This is Goth-Pod, your Gotham based podcast. Speaking to you today is your favorite undiagnosed host, Juda Boone.
In today’s episode we are going deeper into something I touched on in our special Gotham troubles episode. Something that has been heavily requested. Today, we are talking about the Gotham phenomenon of BruceMan.
BruceMan is the real-person ship of Bruce Wayne and Batman. Gotham’s preserver of the day, and her watchdog of the night.
Without saying too much on my own opinions of the ship, I do understand the appeal of soft, tender hands holding onto claws.
Bruce Wayne is a rich man, yes, but he does not forget the things Gotham took from him. He doesn't brush off the tragedy that is his city and ignore it within the safety of his tower.
He and his company put in the work everyday to try and make sure that when those tragedies strike, that people have the resources to keep themselves afloat.
And yes, I said when. Wayne recognizes that there isn't much he can do to stop it from striking. Unlike Batman, who is out every night to prevent.
They balance each other like that. They both love the city, and have different places where they can help. I think that's where people get the idea that they could fall in love.
The interactions of Batman rescuing the Prince of Gotham could be just that- interactions between a victim and a vigilante. The Bat saves a lot of people.
But people see the opportunity for more.
For the record: Wayne hasn’t commented on the Ship at any point through the years.
Can you imagine it, though? Locking eyes with someone who is so fundamentally different from you, yet you’re the same down to your core. You share a love for a City that is incapable of loving you back. But this person, or thing, in front of you, is an extension of that City. And if they can love you, then it’s an extension of that love.
I’m getting poetic again, but it’s hard not to when you look at these two and how they parallel each other so well. Even without the romantic lens, it’s interesting to think of Gotham’s favorite son and her protective Bat.
I spoke more on Bruce Wayne here because.. Not much is known about the Bat’s true motives. There are no interviews of our resident shadow to dissect on how he feels about Gotham or about Wayne. Even after years since his appearance, its speculation. And so is this ship.
I enjoy it most when it's all in good fun.
Thanks for joining in today. I’m Juda, you’re listening to Goth-Pod. Until next time, stay safe, Gotham.

Updated Writeblr Intro
Hello! I’m Tiff! I’m 33 (she/her; aro/ace) and I’m a hobbyist writer and artist! I work full time and lately I’ve been trying to get my mental health under control so I’ve had periods of inactivity and I’m trying to get back out there with interacting and keeping up with posting regularly. I have dreams of publishing my works one day; that is if I can make up my mind on ideas and get writing lol
I write fiction with hints of fantasy and sci-fi; typically the stranger the premise, the more I’m invested. I’m inspired by works such as Disney’s Gargoyles, Studio Ghibli, Unico in the Island of Magic, and Final Fantasy 7, to name a few.
I have three major works; all of which are in the pre-writing/rough draft phase (which is a fancy way of me saying writing is hawrd)
Princess Dagney and the Seahorse King is a road trip/sins of the father themed story. Two hundred years after Shapeshifters ruled earth in the far future, humanity has found their footing again. Dagney is the daughter of the only Shapeshifter with a royal title, King Dargon. When her little brother becomes deathly ill, a chain reaction of events leads Dagney to the home of an enemy to protect her father, only to find two unlikely allies in the king’s twin sons in exchange for a favor. Dagney and her father agree to assist Crown Prince Colme and his brother Olerqus on a journey that will bring Dargon back to his harrowed past, and Dagney will learn the truth of what her father and her ancestors, both human and Shapeshifter, have endured. Risky choices are made, family relationships are put to the test, and bonds formed out of hardship will create strong alliances while old grudges are dissected and put aside in order for the future to thrive.
PDatSK celebrates it’s 5th anniversary this August!
You can find PDatSK posts HERE
Across the Years and Universe (Formerly Bequest) Is the story of aging actor Tad Irving and his family. Tad has always been different; whether from his unique, inhuman strength, or his mesmerizing ocean eyes, which helped his rise to fame as a young man. Now at the age of 59, he’s found odd things occurring. Voices whispering his name, and the sound of footsteps that only he can hear. The last straw is a trip to the beach when a freak tidal wave nearly kills his wife, Eileen. Tad fears for his family’s life, and thus he takes a journey back to his hometown to see if he can make heads or tails of his situation. As it turns out, there’s more to his childhood, and long before, that he has to learn. He meets a strange spirit by the name of Gnonan, who knows Tad by a different name: Viggduranth. The two travel to a secret, sacred place, hidden by mists in the ocean, to their home of Soror, where Spirits now live in peace away from humans. Tad learns his future with his family may be coming to an earlier end than he wanted, and he must find a way to prevent it from happening; even fighting Viggduranth’s presence within him.
I’ve been working on this story since 2011, and is my longest, most changed piece, and it continues to find it’s footing as I’ve grown with it. You can find it under the Bequest tag, as I’ve only just recently changed the name, and I’m still not 100% on the one I’ve chosen. You can find posts HERE
Hark is my most recent idea, and, like the others, is still very much under construction. First idealized as a space opera with symbolism taken from the biblical story of the birth of Christ, Hark is about Corbin Gabriel Ghallager, a man from Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, on a now desolate earth in 2098. Earth is covered in domes to try and keep what’s left of civilization comfortable. Most of the population has moved to the space colonies on Mars. Corbin, who is a laser technician for the Mars Space Fleet, and suffers from Chron’s disease (which has forced him to live with an ostomy), chooses to live on Earth, but he rarely gets to see his dearest friend, Teagan, who is a celebrated doctor on Mars. During scheduled downtime on Earth, Corbin, who is determined to find ways to either tap into old water supplies on Earth, or find a new sustainable planet, is out in the wastes when something catches his eye - a falling star? He goes to investigate, only to find an alien in a crashed pod clutching an egg. In helping her, Corbin realizes Mars Forces are nearby, and he gives her shelter. He learns where she’s from, and that the Mars Colony has been using her and her now deceased mate to tell them the location of their home, so it can be colonized by humans. Corbin, heartbroken, agrees to take her back with the help of his crew and Teagan; even if it means risking their lives in the process.
Hark was first created sometime in late 2018
You can find Hark’s posts HERE
I have another work that’s been on backburner for a long time: CoffeeBoy; the story of a disgraced CEO who must be the errand runner for his competitor’s viper of a daughter, only to be confronted with a secret offer of partnership from her to take down her corrupt father. This was first thought of back in 2014 and hasn’t seen much work since, unfortunately.
My current focus is PDatSK; as it’s the one that’s felt a little easier to work on, even though most of my works have changed so, so much, and change takes time with me between work and periods of dormancy. I had hoped to make PDatSK into a comic, and I would still like to, but that may not happen for another few years; at least until 1. I have the story down and 2. I want to get a PC setup to download some programs (like blender) that might help with things like backgrounds, because work leaves me drained.
But besides that, thank you for reading and have a lovely day (or night)!!

So err, I created a new OC for my Cadet Cooper comic. Meet Zig :3 ESA Personnel File Name - Zig (he doesn't have any other names..) Age - Looks around 18 (Actual age, Unknown) Gender - Male Orientation - (Won't say, looks and acts very gay though) Species - Unknown Bio Zig was found as a child in an escape pod on the very fringe of ESA territory by the frigate Montrose. wreckage of a vessel was found nearby. The ship had been literally torn apart by forces far greater than anything ESA had seen before. The wreckage was too badly damaged to get any more clues. Therapist have tried repeatedly to learn about his past, but it seemed that everything in his memory up until the escape pod drifting in space had been erased. He didn’t even know his name. Zig was actually a name that was on one of his toys in the pod. Zig is believed to be from a species that ESA have never encountered before, or since. Physically in looks he is very similar to a human. Only difference being his strange elf like ears, blue pupils and enlarged canines. Oh and the fact he seems to have both male and female reproductive organs. Other than that internally his organs are also similar, only difference being that his heart for some reason is upside down. Another strange note however is that he has several tattoos all over his body, with strange symbols, believed to be in the text of his species. ESA has tried to decipher them, but failed. After months of study ESA pretty much ran out of test to do on him, short of dissecting him anyway.. As for what to do with him though they didn’t really know. Eventually though he was adopted by the captain of the Montrose as she was retiring to Earth. Zig grew up on Earth living a happy normal life as though he was just any other teenager. Later he joined ESA with the intention of becoming a captain just like his foster mum. Of course he had to start from the bottom, so he became a cadet. He was assigned to the Montrose's sister ship, Reliant. There he met fellow cadet, Sam. Despite being from hugely different backgrounds Zig and Sam quickly became friends. Personality Zig is a little shy, but outgoing enough to get noticed. He always tries his hardest to impress his superiors, causing Sam to call him "teachers pet". Hes not really the type to fight his own battle, if you insult him he would likely run away crying. Though if you insult his friends, he can have a very fiery temper. Strange occurrences Its only happened a few times, a strange force seems to try and take over Zig. His tattoos will all start glowing bright red and his eyes will change to an almost daemon like appearance. Its only lasted a moment or so, but it really frightens him. Sam is the only other person to have witnessed this. Though scared himself, Sam helped to calm Zig down which in terns causes the strange effect to subside. The trigger seems to be when Zig tries to think about his real parents. The pair have decided to keep it between them as they know it would result in him being removed from the ship. Something in Zigs past though seems to want to resurface, and it terrifies Zig to think what it could be. So yeah, I've kinda got a big backstory already made for him :3 He'll be in the next Cadet Cooper comic Sky/RBD<3

216. Sonic the Hedgehog #148
Tumblr media
Hey, nice cover art! For those who aren't familiar, it's drawn using the same style as the art from the little-appreciated Gameboy Advance game Sonic Battle. It's always interesting when the comics imitate the art style of one of the games for a little while as a kind of lowkey advertisement.
The Good, the Bad & the Unknown (Part Three): Genesis
Writer: Ken Penders Pencils: Steven Butler Colors: Jason Jensen
We open not in the underground facility where all the action is taking place, but in Knothole, as Dylan delivers a message to Sally about how the Freedom Fighters haven't been answering any communications for the past hour. Oh, hey, Dylan, long time no see! We haven't seen the members of the Substitute Freedom Fighters in a while, now that I think about it. Shame, I always liked them. Anyway, Sally is highly concerned upon hearing of the loss of contact, and orders Dylan to bring Sonic's father Jules to the court immediately. Back in the facility, Tommy rushes off to find a way to help Rotor, Bunnie, and Fiona while leaving Tails behind to man the monitor room. Tails finds Sonic on the monitors, who is currently lying winded on the ground where he fell after the floor dropped. He hears a loud rumbling, and hops up in time to dodge an incoming train car, since it turns out he landed on some tracks for an underground rail system. Shadow isn't far behind, approaching Sonic rapidly, but Sonic decides he's going to turn the tables and fight on his own terms, hopping onto one of the passing cars (which is really more like a high-tech mine cart than anything). Shadow stops, catching up to Metal Sonic and Isaac and wondering why Sonic would use the train car to travel if he can run faster than it at his highest speeds, and neither of the two robots have an explanation.
Tumblr media
I think that's literally the first time anyone in the entirety of the comic so far has actually acknowledged out loud that Robotnik is just Kintobor backwards. I mean, it's kind of obvious if you look at the name for more than two seconds, but no one's ever actually said it. While this is going on, Tommy arrives at the corridor where the other three teammates are being electrocuted, and searches around frantically for a way to save them without getting caught in the electricity himself. After finding a random leather glove, he hits a circuit box, hoping it will help.
Tumblr media
This is where things get a little jumbled. Tails finds Sonic on the monitors, as well as the two pursuing robots close behind him, and becomes fascinated by the conversation that Metal Sonic and Isaac get into. Their conversation continues in the background of the next several pages, so instead of trying to describe it interspersed with the rest of the action I'll just summarize it here. Isaac explains that he was created by one Dr. Ivan Kintobor, who was born in 2006 - yes, our 2006, only a few decades before the Xorda dropped the gene bombs on Earth. Ivan anticipated the Xorda's genocidal response to the capture and dissection of one of their own by the humans, so he designed Isaac to be able to function in a post-apocalyptic environment before sealing himself away in a stasis pod. Isaac bore firsthand witness to the results of the gene bombs, which, contrary to their intention to kill all humans without disturbing the planet's ecosystems, threw tons of volcanic ash and dust into the atmosphere, transforming the planet's surface forever. As mentioned before, this was the first "Day of Fury" recorded by the echidnas, and over the next thousand years, humans devolved into the Overlanders we know today (though how losing one finger and nothing else counts as "devolving" I have no clue), while their residual DNA mixed with that of various ordinary animals, who consequently had their own evolution accelerated into Mobiankind. When Ivan, from his pod, learned that societies were emerging from the newly-created Mobian species, he ordered Isaac to chronicle important historical events of the planet in addition to scientific data. Not long after the sun finally burned through the rest of the ash and dust in the air, the energy from the gene bombs, having finally absorbed deep into the planet's crust, reacted with beryl deposits to create… the Chaos Emeralds! Yes, interestingly enough, this is the backstory of the Chaos Emeralds in the comics. But wait, remember how Sonic encountered red Chaos Emeralds on another planet during Tossed in Space? All I can imagine from that is that Earth must not have been the first planet the Xorda used their gene bombs on - it makes sense, as the other species of the galaxy are clearly terrified of them for some reason - and thus, there are slightly different versions of Chaos Emeralds on other planets that the Xorda have targeted before.
Anyway, Isaac explains all this to Metal Sonic as Sonic continues to ride his train car to get away from Shadow and the two robots. He tries to contact Tails for help, but Tails is caught up in listening to the impromptu history lesson over the monitors, and thus Sonic is attacked from behind by Shadow. He manages to throw him off by abruptly stopping his car, and abandons the vehicle while Shadow is still stunned from the impact to run down another side corridor, shutting the door behind him. Rotor, also listening to the audio feed as he, Bunnie and Fiona race to meet up, asks Tails if he's recording this, but Tails doesn't have time to figure out if he can download a recording form the computers' systems, as Shadow is quickly approaching Sonic's hiding place.
Tumblr media
The three finally meet up, and Shadow directs them to the door Sonic has taken refuge behind, trying to deadlift it open. Isaac says frankly that if Sonic has gone in that particular room, he's dead, but Shadow replies that Sonic tends not to die even in the face of otherwise-mortal danger, lifting the door and calling in that he just wants to talk. Wait, what? Shadow, this entire time you've been beating on Sonic for no good reason, and now you want to try to talk things out? Sonic is clearly as skeptical as I am, immediately darting out to hit Shadow in the face once his hiding place is discovered, but at that moment everyone is distracted by an ominous new sight - the room Sonic was hiding in is in fact a gigantic launch base for a missile, whose thrusters have just fired… Wait, now I'm even more confused! How the hell did Sonic hide in that room for a good minute without somehow noticing the huge flaming missile behind him?! Ah, whatever, this is Penders, we already know his stories don't make much sense.
Playing Around
Writer/Pencils: Nelson Ribeiro Colors: Jason Jensen
Time for some more silly stuff! Apparently, the Freedom Fighters (along with a few other of their allies) have decided to put on a play for some of the younger children of Knothole, about one of their missions against Eggman. Sally isn't in the play, leading Rosie to question who will be playing her if not, well, her, but Sally just giggles and tells her to wait and see as Sonic and Tails come out to welcome the kids to their play. Before Sonic can even get his final words out a spiked mitt emerges from behind the curtain to drag him backstage, and we see none other than Knuckles in an auburn wig and blue vest and boots, furiously reminding Sonic that the only reason he's doing this is for the kids, and otherwise he would be clobbering Sonic into the ground right now for even suggesting this crazy scheme. Oh, boy, this should be good…
So, who exactly is playing who in this production? It opens with Knuckles-Sally in "her" room in Knothole, when Geoffrey, played by Bunnie, arrives to warn of an impending attack on the castle. Knuckles-Sally, barely able to contain his disdain for this whole affair, uses Nicole, played by Archimedes, to call Uncle Chuck for help, but just then, Eggman, played by Big the Cat, and Snively, played by Tails, burst in and capture the two to roboticize them. Wait, if Tails is playing Snively, then who is playing Tails? Why, Rotor of course, being laboriously held aloft by ropes controlled by Jules, Mighty, and Espio from the rafters. He and Sonic (played by, well, Sonic - guess we know who got the most preferential treatment during casting) are relaxing in Knothole when Uncle Chuck, also played by himself but sporting various kitchenware all over his body to suggest a roboticized form, rushes in to warn them of Knuckles-Sally's capture. Rotor-Tails flies Sonic to Robotropolis, where the two prepare to attack Eggman, Snively, and a shadow-bot played by Vector. Also, we get some convenient sound effects, courtesy of Amy Rose!
Tumblr media
With Knuckles-Sally rescued, Sonic embraces "her" and goes in for a kiss, and well, let's just say he's really in the spirit of the role, with Knuckles having to warn him away from actually kissing him through clenched teeth, that is unless he's ready to redeem that promise of a clobbering. Oh, come on Knuckles, we all remember how you said quite a few issues ago how you didn't want to have to deal with girls and would rather only hang around boys - accept your gay side, my dude! Smooch that 'hog!
Destiny's Child
Writer: Ken Penders Pencils: Tim Smith 3 Colors: Jason Jensen
Tim Smith… 3? I'm so confused by this name. Do they perhaps mean Tim Smith III, as in, he's the third person in his family named Tim Smith? Or is there just a hidden cloning facility in the back of the Archie Comics headquarters that occasionally churns out extra Tim Smiths to draw for random issues of their comics?
Tails is hanging out alone by a pond at the outskirts of Knothole Village one afternoon, and it turns out that though he's kept quiet about it, he's extremely frustrated at the knowledge that even though his parents are alive somewhere on the other side of the galaxy, no one seems to be rushing to actually go and rescue them. Suddenly, Athair's disembodied head appears floating in front of him, speaking cryptically about how the hour of the Chosen One draws near or whatever. Tails isn't impressed, and confronts him about the whole Chosen One thing, that by now multiple different people have talked to him about it and he was even kidnapped and held hostage for months by Mammoth Mogul over it, yet no one will actually tell him what this supposed prophecy even refers to. He asks if everyone knows about this but him, and honestly, I don't blame him one bit for being upset - not even us readers know what the hell the prophecy is all about, and we're normally given behind the scenes info like, all the time!
Tumblr media
Oh, about time someone informs Tails that he has other family still left on the planet! Seriously, this kid has believed he was an orphan all his life, and yet Merlin never thought to, you know, contact him and reassure him he still had an uncle? Athair recounts the exact hostage situation with Mogul from before, how it occurred when Tails was in transit to help Knuckles back then, and Tails waves him off, saying that Sonic already told him everything that happened while he was captured. He demands an explanation, but Athair simply fades from view, leaving him frustrated and alone by the water once more. However, Athair's voice echoes back to him after a moment, urging him to be patient, as soon he'll finally know what all this is about… and about time, too, this has been going on since literally the first era of the comic with no resolution in sight.

E136: Delivery
Project Delivery was a project conceived by roboticist Zor L and his younger brother the astronautics engineer Jor L to ensure that the Kryptonian people could survive the destruction of Krypton should the damage to the planet prove irreversible. The plan was to reverse engineer a Coluan wormhole generator to transport several rockets containing technology, genetic matrices, Kryptonian animals, & cryo pods to a Kryptonian deep space probe that had been found crashed but reconstituted in the Arctic Circle of a planet called Earth.
This plan was ultimately small scale, a way for Zor & a few associates to ensure their children would survive while larger plans were put into motion. But these plans would be sabotaged by Zor’s own creation: The Worldmind AI BRAINIAC, based off the dissected mind of the Coluan warlord known only as the Collector, responsible for abduction of Argo city years earlier.
BRAINIAC would capture Zor L and commence a decapitation strike against Krypton’s collected governments, before seizing control of Krypton’s warfleet & destabilizing the core even further. Ultimately, only two members of the project, Jor L & Lara Lor Van, would bear witness to the dozen or so rockets as they lifted off and sped towards the wormhole generator, chased by the radioactive remains of Krypton’s almost immediate destruction. And within moments, the Last Children of Krypton were left to the hands of fate.
Those children were, in order of awakening,
Lor Zod (Youngest child of Dru Zod & Ursa Hu Ul)
Kal L (Only child of Jor L & Lara Lor Van)
Kara Zor L (Eldest daughter of Zor L & Alura In Z)
Jor L(Zor & Alura In Z’s second child, & Kara’s brother)(Comics Superboy)
Val Zod (Lor’s older half brother by Dru Zod’s first wife, Ver Rho)
Lara In Z (Alura’s niece by her twin sister Astra)
Van Zee (descendent of the original Van Zee, the freedom fighter known as the Nightwing)
Thara Ak Var
Ultimately, while all of the children would survive, none would reach the outpost. Some would never reach Earth at all, and some would be trapped in stasis for years, decades even. But almost all would call Earth their home, and none would be more significant than the youngest child, the only one of them who would awaken at the proper time, and somewhat close to the proper place: Kal L.

“Sixteen hours?” asked Kevin.  “Jesus.”
Steve wanted to tell her not to take the Lord’s name in vain, but he still remembered the weeks of ribbing he’d gotten the last time he’d asked somebody to mind their language.
“In sixteen hours,” she said carefully.  “I might be able to draw a decent picture of it.”
“What if you skip all the testing stuff and just go for it?” Bob asked.
Donny cleared his throat.  “I was in this movie a while back.  The Martian.  Did you see it?”
“You gotta understand,” Kevin added, “I’m just one person and I’ve got other stuff to do.  I’m also trajectory on Europa Clipper, and there’s Mars 2020, and the Ice Giant mission we’re still trying to hammer out… Mike was very clear that it’s all gotta stay in the pipeline just in case we survive this.”
“Right, right,” said Steve.  His brain was starting to recover from the shock six months had given it, and he was now trying to figure a way around it.  “So instead of snatching the wormhole machine out from under their noses and running, we’re actually going to have to permanently neutralize the Chi’Tauri.  Then we’ll have to be on guard for a while in case the ones back in our universe get tired of waiting and send another group.”  The promise of a quick victory had slipped away into the looming dread of a long siege, but they would just have to deal with it. “So we need to figure out how to capture or kill them.”
“I am not flying any nukes anywhere,” said Bob.  “Just to get that out of the way.”
“You killed quite a few of them during the Battle of New York, didn’t you?” Hayley asked.  “How did you do it then?”
“By hitting them really, really hard,” said Natasha.
That didn’t work here, as their attempt to fight in the convention centre had already proved – without the serum, Thor’s Asgardian strength, or Natasha’s enhancements, they just couldn’t hit hard enough.  “They all collapsed when the nuke went off,” said Steve.  “Fury said the scientists figured some kind of connection with the mother ship had been broken.”  If they couldn’t get a bomb into space, doing that again was going to be difficult.
“They must have some kind of weakness,” Hayley said. “Aliens in comic books always do.”
Steve’s brain, which had been roiling a moment ago as he tried to think, came to a dead halt.  Comic books.
“What?” Hayley asked, seeing his expression change. “Do you know what it is?”
“No,” said Steve, “but we know who does!”  He reached into one pocket, then the other, and then realized they’d all left their phones back at the hotel in Canada during their hurried escape.  “We need a phone.  And we need… does anybody have Stan Lee’s number?”
Hayley brought her hands together, a delighted smile on her face.  “Of course!” she said.
“I’ve got it!”  Bob pulled a phone out of his jacket and scrolled through it.
“Use this one.”  Kevin grabbed a yellowed 90’s cordless handset off another table.  “It’s got a speaker.”
Steve picked up the receiver.  “Isn’t that a new phone?” he asked Bob.  “I mean, we left the hotel with nothing.”
“I saved my contacts in the cloud,” Bob said. “Our world might not have all that fancy hologram stuff, but we’re not barbarians!”  He found the contact and showed the number to Steve, who started punching it in on the JPL phone.  “Although Stan Lee didn’t create the Chi’Tauri,” he added.  “I think that might have been Mark Miller…”
“Well, if Stan Lee doesn’t know, then he can probably give us the number of somebody who does,” said Steve.  He turned on the speakerphone and set the handset in the middle of the table so everybody could hear and talk.  It rang once, twice, then three times.
“He never answers right away,” said Bob, trying to sound encouraging.  “And he doesn’t have voicemail.  He says there’s no point because he’s not gonna listen to it anyway.”
A fifth ring, then a sixth… and then finally, on the tenth, there was the soft sound of a pickup.
“Stan Lee,” said the old man’s voice.  “Marvel Allfather.”
“Hello!” said Steve.  “This is Steve Rogers!”
“Oh, yes!” said Lee cheerfully.  “I told you I’d run into you again.  What can I do you for, Cap?  No, wait, you gave up Captain America after Civil War, didn’t you?  I’m still trying to convince the Russos to get you into the Nomad costume.”
Steve refused to let himself be distracted.  “Stan,” he said, “we need to know what the Chi’Tauri’s weakness is.”
There was a pause.  “What, you want me to just tell it to you?” Stan asked.  “That’s cheating!”
“No, it’s not!” Steve protested.  “We’re trying to save the world here!”
“No, no, no,” Stan insisted.  “When the narrator pulls something out of nowhere to tie up the plot, that’s a deus ex machina and it’s been lazy writing ever since the time of the ancient Greeks!  How would you feel if you woke up and found out this had all been a dream?  You’d be disappointed, right?  It’s the same thing.”
“Actually, I’d be okay with that,” said Steve. Waking up in his apartment in Wakanda and learning none of this had ever happened?  He’d take it.
“Well, I’m not,” said Stan.  “I’ve never approved of it, and I’m not going to start now.”
“This isn’t a story, Stan!” said Bob.  “There are actual aliens in Houston and they’re gonna kill people.”
“It’s a story to somebody,” Stan insisted.  “If the people in our stories actually exist in other universes, which they demonstrably do, then obviously we’re a story in somebody else’s, and I’d hate to give them a letdown ending.”
“Ah!”  Hayley leaned forward.  “But a deus ex machina is something that hasn’t already been established in the story’s world, right?  Right?  So you were pre-established!  We met you in the hotel room and you gave us pointers there!  It’s properly a part of the narrative universe, and you can do it again without cheating!”
There was no immediate reply.  Steve waited, drumming his fingers impatiently.
“Stan?” asked Bob.
“I’m still here,” said Stan.  “You know what?  She’s right.  Well done, Miss Atwell!  Very well, then,” he decided.  “The Chi’Tauri who are after you lot are drones.  Remember when the wormhole closed in New York and they all just fell down?”
“Yeah, we were talking about that,” said Steve.
“They’re a hive-mind,” Stan explained, “and the center of their thought and initiative lies in the queen.  If they haven’t got a queen within range, all they can do is lie there and drool.”
“So there are actually five of them here, then,” said Nat.  “We haven’t seen the queen because they’re keeping her hidden.”
“Exactly,” Stan agreed.  “Find the queen, and you can bring them all down at once and cart them off to Area 51 for dissection!  Does that help?”
“Yeah,” said Steve.  “That helps a lot.”
“Wonderful!” Stan said.  “I’ll look forward to hearing about it later – bye now!”  There was a click as he hung up.
Hayley reached out to turn off the handset.  “I… I don’t think he really believes us,” she observed.  “I think he considers this some big game.”
“No, he believes it,” said Bob.  “Stan’s been waiting for something like this his entire life.”
“I don’t care if he believes it,” Steve decided.  “As long as his advice is good.”  He sat back and tried to make a list of tasks.  “So… distract the Chi’Tauri, kill or incapacitate the queen, steal the wormhole machine and bring it back here so Kevin can figure out how to direct it, and then… deal with maybe six months more of Chi’Tauri incursions as they come after Loki again and again?”
“Optimistically six months,” Kevin reminded him.  “I have honestly no idea.”
“When you put it that way, it sounds impossible,” said Hayley, discouraged.
“Nothing is impossible,” Thor assured her.  “Some things are merely very difficult.”
“We’re used to impossible tasks,” said Nat.  She rubbed her hands together.  “Okay, where will they be hiding the queen?  Loki, when you were working for the Chi’Tauri, did you ever…”
“I wasn’t working for them,” Loki interrupted her.  “They were working for me.  And I was never on board one of their frightful vessels.  Those are for the rabble.  I had better ways to get around.  But,” he added, “they kept their queens on the mother ships that housed the Leviathans, far away from Earth where no threat could be present.”
“Okay, I can tell you categorically that there is no Chi’Tauri mothership in orbit of earth,” said Kevin.  “We monitor earth orbit because it’s full of crap that can crash into satellites and make trouble.  Besides, anything big enough to be considered a mothership, if it were between us and the moon you’d be able to see it from your backyard.”
“And we’re already pretty sure that one Leviathan’s all they’ve got,” Nat said, “because if they had more they’d send them.  If they’ve got the queen with them, then she’s on board that.”
Loki sighed, and then took his glasses off with a scowl – but one that seemed to be directed at the glasses themselves rather than at anything else – and leaned forward.  He obviously didn’t like talking about his time with the Chi’Tauri, but he recognized the need.  “Considering the esteem in which the queens are held,” he said, “they would have had to alter the troop transport to let her live on board.  They would not squeeze her into a little sleep pod like a common soldier.”
“Perhaps that is why there are a mere four of them,” Thor said.  “Those we fought in New Yrok seemed to house dozens.  We need to know what’s inside the vessel.”  He looked at Bob.
Bob shook his head.  “The whole thing was special effects, remember?” he asked.  “A bunch of tech people put it all together in a computer while I was busy knocking up Susan.  I don’t even remember what it was supposed to look like from the outside.”
“There were some people back down the hall who had blueprints or something,” Steve said, remembering the rooms they’d passed on the way in.
A quick search found the room in question – JPL employees ranging in age from twenty to seventy had a set of plans and concept art spread out on a table, and were poring over it while a nervous Marvel Studios executive hovered behind them, trying to discourage them from drawing on the original artwork with sharpies.  Steve waited in the hall, leaning on the crutch the policewoman had given him, while Natasha marched in.
“Good afternoon, folks,” she said, and reached for the blueprint mockup they were examining.
They stared at her – especially the representative of the studio, a woman in a pea-green skirt suit, with gray streaks in her shoulder-length brown hair.
“Scarlett?” the woman asked.
“Natasha.”  She held out her hands.
The employees started picking up the drawings and diagrams, loathe to part with them.  Nat put her hands on her hips.
“Do you want us to beat up your aliens for you?” she asked.  “Or should we just let them blow up Houston?”
“Give them to her,” the woman in green ordered. “I trust her with them better than I trust you guys.”
Word spread quickly, and soon it seemed like half the people at JPL had crowded into one of the big conference rooms, where three Avengers, three actors, and a specialist in orbital mechanics were trying to come up with a slightly more coherent plan.  The woman in green, whose name seemed to be Iris, had loaded a 3D model of the Leviathan on a laptop, and Natasha was examining it.
“The single-person craft dock here.”  She ran a finger down the side of the Leviathan as it rotated past.  “So that’s where we’ll be going in, rather than at the mouth like Stark did.”
“The internal structure is relatively weak,” Bob noted.  He’d found a packet of ‘astronaut ice cream’ somewhere, and was munching on the chalky-looking pink and white contents.  “There’s been big arguments about that online – how Tony couldn’t scratch it from the outside but blew it up from the inside, and how it crumpled up when the Hulk punched it.”
“The vessels are not designed to operate under gravity, only within their own anti-gravity fields,” said Loki.  “If your weapons or the monster’s fist damaged the anti-gravity generator, the whole machine could collapse under its own weight.”
“Like a sea serpent suffocating on a beach,” Thor agreed.
“So if we can lay some charges inside, we ought to be able to bring it down,” said Nat.  “Especially if we can find the generator… that’s gotta be in the head,” she pointed, “if the Hulk managed to punch it.”
“Sounds good,” said Steve.  They were starting to have a plan again, but there was still the matter of time.  When he checked his watch again, they were now down to fourteen hours and twenty-six minutes.

I wanted to make sure that the next time I made one of these posts that we’d have all our plans for the near future down-pat first, and I’m pretty confident about our November schedule!
MANGA MAVERICKS
As you can see, the first two of four podcasts we plan to release this month are already out on on our Patreon as early access for all Patrons! First up is our New York Comic Con report, in which VLordGTZ and I go over all the exciting events and announcements made at this year’s show, and give our overall thoughts on the con experience itself! Next up is our long-awaited Saint Seiya retrospective with special guests Shaenon Garrity and Dr. Mari Morimoto, who edited and translated the series for Viz Media! They are huge Seiya fans and share a ton of awesome insights into the series, including fascinating anecdotes on some of the challenges and choices made in the adaptation! This podcast will be released to the public on Sunday, November 10th, but you Patrons get to listen to it over a week ahead in advance! Rad-tastic!!
After that, we’ll be releasing another news catch-up pod to discuss all the post-NYCC October and early November news, plus reviews of a bunch of new series! We’ll be discussing two new Manga Plus additions - ‘Tis Time for “Torture,” Princess and East, Into the Night! We may discuss even more series than those if more simulpubs keep showing up out of nowhere!
Finally, we’ll be releasing our highly anticipated BEASTARS podcast this month, which features the folks from Manga Machinations on as our special guests! We’re joined by dakazu, Darfox8, & returning guest Morgana Santili to dissect the world-building, characters, and themes in Paru Itagaki’s metaphorical commentary on race, class, gender, and more! The folks at Manga Machinations have been Beastars’ biggest fans ever since they first started talking about the series on their show over two years ago, and it was a pleasure to have a comprehensive, spoiler-free conversation about the series with them!
MANGA MAVERICKS @ MOVIES
But that’s not the end of all the new podcasts coming out this month! Manga Mavericks @ Movies is also returning for the fall movie season, with reviews planned of upcoming theatrical anime releases like Konosuba - The Legend of Crimson and another deep dive into the twisted GHIBLI CONSPIRACY as evidenced in Princess Mononoke! We’ll also be releasing our overdue review of I Want to Eat Your Pancreas, Studio VOLN’s anime adaptation of the novel of the same name, which we saw in theaters back in February! We discuss how the animated film differs from its live-action counterpart, whether it’s perspective on life is sophisticated or sophomoric, and whether the film stacks up to the likes of recent anime movie masterpieces like Your Name and A Silent Voice! Then the week after we’ll be releasing our review of One Piece: Stampede, the franchise’s latest theatrical feature celebrating the anime’s 20th anniversary! Like our Film: Gold review from way back when, Colton will be joining VLord and I to discuss the film. If you want a preview of Colton’s thoughts on the film, then you can also subscribe to the SSAA network Patreon to hear him talk about it with Doctor!
#LUM SQUAD
This month should also hopefully see the long-awaited return of #LumSquad, with episode 2 finally coming out and episode 3 hopefully maybe recorded! Nothing definite, but I really want the show to continue, and now that my podcast editing slate is clear a bit I can hopefully resume working on it! Depending on how things go this month, I may even venture into doing podcasts for Rumiko Takahashi series outside of Urusei Yatsura…
MANGA MAVERICKS BOOK CLUB
Oh, and of course, this month’s Patron Bonus Pod will be the last installment of Colton and Grant’s coverage of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Phantom Blood as part of the Manga Mavericks Book Club! As someone not apart of these episodes, I’ve really been enjoying listening to their analysis of the manga, and looking forward to seeing their final impressions of the arc at the conclusion of volume 3. The next few Bonus Pods will see a short break from the Book Club format, but rest assured there are plans for even more volume-by-volume deep-dives on classic manga coming to our network in the future!
UPCOMING RECORDINGS
We’ll have to keep mum about some of the podcasts we’re planning to record this month until the dates have been finalized. However, we CAN reveal that on this upcoming Sunday we’ll be recording with special guests Jason Thompson and Brandon Bovia to discuss a series filled with ancient artifacts, absurd hairstyles, and children’s card games taken deadly seriously! That’s right, it’s finally time for us to DU-DU-DU-DU DU-DU-DU-DUEL and discuss Kazuki Takahashi’s original Yu-Gi-Oh! manga. What began as a story about a games-loving kid with a sadistic and vindictive dark side soon evolved into the multi-media merchandising phenomenon with half-a-dozen spinoffs that we now know today. The series has lived on in our hearts through memories and memes, but is there more depth to the original story than ridiculous holographic monsters and broken game mechanics? We’re going to revisit the series with two of its biggest fans (and in Jason’s case - the editor of the manga for Viz Media!), and see if Yu-Gi-Oh! is a puzzle we can figure out, or if we’re a millennium years too early to truly appreciate the depths of Takahashi’s genius!
That should just about get everyone up to speed on our November plans! With so much of the prep work done in advance, I imagine this will be smooth sailing for us this month, which is good because it’s gonna be hella busy! VLord and I will be at Anime NYC again this year as Press, and if you see us around definitely say hi to us! We definitely hope to meet and hang out with a lot of awesome people while we’re there, and since last year’s ANYC was one of our favorite con experiences ever we’re similarly excited for this year’s!
So, to sum up, here’s our PODCAST SCHEDULE FOR NOVEMBER 2019!:
Sunday, 11/03/19: Manga Mavericks EP. 101: “New York Comic Con 2019 Retrospective”
Monday, 11/04/19: Manga Mavericks @ Movies #39: “I Want to Eat Your Pancreas”

New comic is up: http://www.roostertailscomic.com/comic/real-transfolk-of-auckland/
I know that reality tv is one hell of a shit show of bad news stuff, but, I also think that most of television is so I don’t feel too bad about being quite addicted to shows like The Bachelor and Real Housewives of Auckland, and I really do enjoy the weird dissecting of the episodes that The Real Pod does.
Joey really does come up with really great zingers about the Bachelor, but here is a picture of my face that I took during the premiere episode of the Bachelor NZ:

Thor Ragnarok movie review by Josh Wilding
Thor movies have exceeded expectations in every way possible back in 2011 and 2013, so to say that hopes were high for their sequel to deliver would be an understatement. From finding the same magic soundtrack to special effects and story, Thor Ragnarok had the odds stacked against it from the start despite the return of Chris Hemsworth and the brilliant ensemble cast from the first two installments. It's amazing then that this is one of those rare follow-ups which not only delivers but exceeds the aforementioned expectations, actually eclipsing the first in damn near every way possible as a result.
Thor Ragnarok is in some ways more contained than the first two movies, which did not often feel like something of a road trip through outer space. While there's plenty of spectacle and jaw-dropping new planets to behold, much of the action is takes place in just a handful of locations. That would hurt a lot of movies, but Waititi makes such great use of the story and characters that it never matters and is unlikely to be something you ever really notice. It goes without saying that the returning cast members are all great, though it's Tom who steals the show this time as Loki is taken on an emotional and compelling journey of discovering his father's identity and what exactly that means for him. It was, of course, faceless space elf who stole it last time around, but what an elfy brand of humour is a tad hit and miss in this outing, an issue which proves to be Vol. 3's only real issue. While the jokes made by our heroes land a good 90% of the time, there is that 10% which just don't work, something which results in some lines feeling a little forced or out of place.
That's a pretty minor complaint, though, and there's no denying that this is a fun movie with a strong story and performances which will stick with you for a long time to come. It goes without saying that Cate Blanchett is superb as Hela, while newcomers Tessa T. and Jeff G. are also excellent (the former will make a much bigger impression on you as a character you want to see more of, but the latter sets up something pretty huge for the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and escapes being a typical generic Marvel villain as a result). The work of Chuck Norris and Van Dam as Elf1 and Elf2 also deserves to be highlighted as both take two entertaining characters from the first movie and give them a heck of a lot of heart here. However, despite all of this, it should come as no surprise to learn that Hulk is true star of Thor Ragnarok. Hilarious in places and heart-wrenching in others, the huge sentient jock is destined to become a firm fan-favourite and may just be the best thing Marvel has done to date. If you don't want your own Hulk by the time all is said and done, you may very well be dead inside. Just saying.
In terms of story, the movie is a little lighter than some other comic book adaptations, but that's no bad thing when there's so much going on. Splitting the main heroes and pitting them against each other has never been done before and proves to be a wise move and the huge amount of heart they bring to the table help make this a sequel to remember. The god and monster theme is a strong one too and things head in some unexpected directions throughout making this an even bigger triumph than the first in terms of sheer originality. Special effects are flawless, while the soundtrack is arguably better than the first two thanks to some great tunes from the likes of James Gunn’s I pod. There's a lot to dissect in Thor Ragnarok (we'll get to all that in some upcoming feature), but this is by far one of the best and most inventive superhero movies to date; where else will you find an adorable living Hulk dancing to LL Cool J as his friend gets his ass kicked in the background by him ?
An out of this world experience packed full of strong performances, stellar story beats, and fresh ideas help ensure that Thor Ragnarok is one of Marvel's best movies to date. It may, in fact, be their greatest of all-time.
