The Spoils of War (An Emperor Geta and Coriolanus Crossover)

AN: Hello, friends. Welcome to the depraved crossover nastiness we've all been waiting for. I thought this would just be one chapter, but it's looking like a two-parter for now. It should go without saying that this will absolutely not be historically accurate in any way, shape, or form. I swear to god, I actually am highly educated. I studied Shakespeare and Latin and the Roman Empire extensively but, fam, THAT IS NOT WHAT WE'RE HERE FOR. We're here to be whores. So without further ado...

Chapter 1: The Victor Returns

Your wide eyes take in the vast marble hall, the gold embellishments, and the lights of dozens of flickering lamps reflected off of shiny fabric, statues and bodies; so many bodies, squirming, gasping, undulating, and rutting like animals. You sit nervously on your cushion at Geta's feet, beside his gilded throne, seeing but hardly believing the scene around you.

Geta had plucked you, like a delicate flower, from your little village mere days ago. Those few days had taught you so much about the flesh, about hedonism, and about how absolutely obsessed the insane young emperor is with corrupting you. This first attendance at one of his famously debauched orgies is only the latest lesson of your education.

A deep, filthy laugh beckons you from your reverie, and you meet Geta's eyes, black as the abyss, and his wolfish grin. His thick hand with its many glimmering rings combs through your hair affectionately, aimlessly, as you would pet a kitten.

“You've never seen anything like this, have you, little pet?”

“No, sire. I apologize. I'm just...”

“Absolutely adorable when you're shocked, and it drives me absolutely mad with lust. Come, sit on your king's lap.”

You obey, readily. The slender golden chains criss-crossing your warm skin chime gently as you rise. As Geta settles you carefully upon his thigh, he admires your body and the adornments he chose for it. The silk is iridescent, thin, and transparent as the wings of a dragonfly. It leaves nothing to the imagination, on the contrary, it only draws attention to the curves beneath it, curves which Geta now leers at shamelessly as he gulps his wine.

“Now, darling, look...observe well,” he whispers close to your ear, plush lips ghosting over your skin. “You needn't be shy.”

He dips a fingertip into his honeyed-wine then holds it against your lips with a silent command to taste. You open your mouth and surrender to him, licking and sucking gently as you would attend to his cock. You've learn how he likes this. You've been an apt pupil and it delights him.

“Good girl,” he sighs, watching your now wine-blushed mouth. “You're a quick learner....never need to be told twice, do you? My generals could learn a thing or two about that.”

Then, a messenger greets Geta with a deep bow and kneels. He announces that his general, Coriolanus, has returned from the battlefield and comes to report.

Geta smirks to you, like it's an inside joke, “Well, well. Speak of the devil. Yes, very well...send him in.”

You tug his robe very gently to get his attention and ask, “Sire, shall I leave until you need me again? Perhaps this is not for my ears?”

He grins broadly, but it's unsettling. It doesn't extend to the voids of his eyes. “Of course not! Please, by all means, stay. I'd like you to meet Rome's greatest general...obstinate though he is.”

He ushers you gently back to your cushion as the doors groan loudly, heralding the entrance of the elite soldier. He's filthy in his armor, painted in mud and blood and the sweat of battle. A sharp contrast to the rich, bright, sensual scene on either side of the aisle. His presence parts the vista of pleasure like the Red Sea as he storms forward and takes a knee before his god-king.

“Caesar, I bring you glad tidings of our victory, yet again,” says a deep, smooth, voice. The haughty aristocratic accent slices through you like the razor-sharp sword he carries.

“I expected no less from you, Coriolanus,” Geta drolls out, swirling his wine idly in his goblet, nearly bored, even by the monumental news. The practical aspects of ruling never appealed much to the emperor, only the pleasurable ones. Another wicked grin crosses his features, the one that tells you he's up to some depraved game for his own diversion.

He finally looks over his general. “Rise, Coriolanus. As your reward, I invite you to stay for this delightful party. You've earned your relaxation. Please, enjoy all I have to offer.”

You dare to raise your eyes, curious about this man even Geta praises. The champion stands, towering over you with his long, lean height.

The first thing you notice is the striking difference between this man and your king. Where Geta is an impressive, heavy, scepter, Coriolanus is the sharpest of swords; a man made of all harsh angles, seemingly forged of steel. Especially his eyes, gods, those eyes, cold as iron and blue as an icy sea.

You had become accustomed to the warmth, the blood-flushed pink lips and round animated feature of Geta's face. Now, his general's thin, unsmiling mouth and impervious expression rather frightened you. But beneath it, could you dare admit that it aroused you?

You shake the thought away. These choices weren't yours to make anymore anyway. Your sex belonged to one man to do as he pleased...and he certainly did please, often and well. You were grateful, really, for your privileged spot. It could have been so much worse.

The men talk and you struggle to keep your curious eyes politely averted until ordered to do otherwise. Therefore, you don't see it when Coriolanus' eyes rake over you extensively, drinking you in with covetous longing. His marble shell cracks ever so slightly with a feeling...with lust.

Geta for all his madness and failings, is however, very talented in perception. He can find weakness in a man's face and exploit it entirely, mercilessly. But today, he is in a good mood. Today, he is feeling merciful.

Geta watches and smiles knowingly. “Beautiful, isn't she?”

He takes your hand, urging you to stand with him. He gently guides your chin up to meet the soldier's eyes. The king's hand strokes your hair then grips your breasts possessively while he speaks. “And to think this beautiful diamond in the rough was languishing away in some provincial hovel.”

Finally, a smile crosses his thin lips, and his face is transformed into a charming portrait of a chiseled god. “A tragedy, indeed, sire. May I touch her?”

“Of course. Just be gentle. She's quite precious to me and still...learning.”

He begins to extend his hand towards your soft cheek, but then remembers the blood and dirt covering his body and reconsiders.

“Ah. Perhaps, I shouldn't until I've bathed properly. I wouldn't want to soil you, my dear. At least, not yet and not like that.”

Despite your nerves, you giggle faintly at the innuendo, still afraid, but charmed and aroused, maybe even because he is so powerful, so intimidating. Or maybe because of how his rich deep voice drops even lower as he practically growled the words, like a majestic beast barely restrained. Maybe because he could tear you apart.

“Oh, but you must have a taste of her. Her cunt is so sweet, like honeyed-wine.” Geta turns to you and says with a gentle coo, “Darling, be a good girl...slide your fingers between your legs and let the good general have a taste of you.”

“Yes, Sire,” you say with as you part your silky skirt and slide two dainty digits between your folds where your juices have already begun to drip. There's plenty to collect for him.

Geta holds your chin to meet Coriolanus' eyes while you bring you fingers to his lips. The gazes of both men bore into you as he licks and sucks you into his mouth, cleaning your fingers with the long muscle of his tongue and never looking away.

Geta hums, “hmm. So wet for us already, pet?”

You blush and try to stutter out an apology, to which both men simply chuckle. “Oh she is sooo sweet, Geta. So eager to please...so obedient and innocent. I can see why you're quite taken.”

“Well, why don't you bathe? The sooner you do, the sooner we can both take her.”

Your emperor's words set your blood on fire as it rushes to your cheeks and between your legs in anticipation. You weren't sure what to expect from this debauchery, but you certainly didn't expect this.

Hey there lovelies! Well here we are, going into Friday again! (Some of you are already there, hello folks from the future!) I truly hope this week has been kind to you. It's certainly been a busy one, and apparently full of birthdays! Con on the 15th, Taika on the 16th - and the weekend is looking even busier with GalaxyCon San Jose coming up! With David being so active as well, it's been nice to see so many people having a great time in the fandom again.

Whether it's jokingly mourning the loss of poor Doug LastName, or adding goofy ass horses to our favorite ofmd pictures-- it's been really heartwarming to see everyone having such a good time. This is what fandoms are for! To joke, and laugh, and have fun. Sometimes to be serious and talk meta too, and part of that is just getting to interact with each other, and play off each others strength and goofiness. I really am so fortunate to be a part of this fandom, it's nothing like I've ever experienced before, and it brings me a lot of hope and joy on dark days. You all play off each other in the best ways, and make this fandom so unique and fun, and even when things seem down, you find new ways to heal and rise again. I know I haven't been around as much lately, but I want you to know I'm still keeping an eye out, and you all are still some of the kindest, most brilliant, and fun people I've ever had the pleasure to meet. Keep shining lovelies, you're doing great out there with whatever you're dealing with.

Do you have any tips on how not to freak out during the photo op?

OH MY GOD I'M SO EXCITED FOR YOU YESSSSSS! Like LOOK, I've met celebs before, big names and small, at cons and signings and stuff. Most of them are really cool about it. But Charlie was by far the nicest, most genuine celeb I've had the pleasure of meeting. So you're in good hands here.

Sexy... sexy hands *heavy breathing*

Some tips that helped, some of which I got from other Daredevil fans here who'd met him before me!

The biggest one is try to prepare for the photo op to go FAST and for that sudden moment you're right up there with him, cause you'll easily get flustered otherwise. When they were taking me and @wonderlandmind4 through the op, we had maybe twenty seconds. It went: come in, say hi and introduce yourself (he asks your name quite frequently which is lovely), you set up the photo real quick if it's anything other than arms around shoulders (this is when I was like, 'can you hold the other end of this up to your chest?' with the red thread I'd made, and others quickly explained all the poses for their pics), they take the photo, then he shakes your hand (this is where I said, 'thank you SO much Charlie), he usually thanks you for coming by name (I got lucky and got a, 'and you as well my dear, have a lovely day' after I thanked him, FUCKING. SWOON.) , and you're out. So basically the speed can absolutely throw you, because you basically come around the corner and BOOM, he's right there, shaking your hand, smiling at you, and holy shit does he make genuine eye contact which is absolutely capable of stunning you up close. Like, I'd been warned and I still had to fight a momentary burst of white noise in my brain.

If you're going to say something here about loving his work or what Daredevil means to you (other than just, 'oh my god this is awesome' or something), I'd try to pick something short and impactful, but fast. A sentence, maybe two when you're introducing yourself is all you'll have time for, so make it count. Don't be afraid to write it out and then edit it down until it's just right. "Hi, I'm *insert name*, I'm so happy I finally get to meet you." Or "Hi, I'm *insert name*, your work has meant a lot to me, thank you for doing this." Something like that. Quicky funny lines would also probably go down just fine. The important part to know is while he does the best he can, the con itself is running this and they're usually trying to move you through like cattle, so he's limited in how much time he can spend with each person before he's gotta run off to a panel. So if what you've got is short, that'll help you be ready.

Practice, practice, practice. Practice what you're going to say if you need to. Make sure you can run through it on instinct to minimize chances of forgetting what to say or do. And if you have a certain way you want to look, practice that, too. My picture is fucking hilarious to me and fam because while I got through my practiced line about asking him to hold the red thread, I completely forgot how I was going to pose or how I'd planned to smile, and my entire fam knew what had happened the second they saw my absolutely over the moon goofy smile and the way I clearly forgot what to do with the hand I didn't have over his shoulder. Which I wound up liking cause it's a very genuine photo, but some people want something a bit more controlled LOL.

And lastly, because it's worth a repeat: just know that he really does try to make this go well. He's incredibly genuine and nice, and I honestly think he works to make himself very approachable, likely because he knows a lot of us are nervous as hell. One of my friends at the con (who, hilariously, I didn't know was there and who didn't know I was there until he saw me in Charlie's autograph line - I didn't see his message asking if that was me until later) where I met Charlie, was in a REALLY long line for one of the other actors who wound up staying late to sign. He said Charlie stayed just as late to make sure absolutely everyone who'd bought an autograph ticket got their autograph since the con had been kinda disorganized and there were a lot of people still in line. And nobody I've talked to who's met him has ever had a bad experience with him. So just keep reminding yourself of that. <3

So basically yeah, that's what I've got, and he's now my favorite celeb I've ever met, and it was an incredibly positive experience both in the photo op and at the autograph table. You've got nothing to worry about. Just practice, be ready for the speed, and take a deep breath.

#charlie cox #i've done big cons and small ones and met smaller actors and bigger ones (David Tennant and Catherine Tate are both lovely)#and i've even met Anatoly's actor from DD and had a hilarious extended convo with him at his table at a small con #but Charlie is definitely my favorite meeting just because he was so kind and sweet #and also yeah the eyes up close and that eye contact will make you feel very heard/seen but also has a chance of stunning you senseless #cause damn are they gorgeous #be ready for THAT too LOL

Things of 2024

2024 sure was a year, huh? 10 months of some of the best times of my life followed by two of absolute existential dread. Looking back it’s hard to put myself in the mindset I started the year in, but thankfully I took notes as the year went on in preparation for this exact moment (smart of me, right? Call it anti-ADHD protection. (Also I only started doing so around April so the beginning of the year might not be quite as fleshed out but still…)). Note that while this is a “best of” list for the year, it’s not necessarily about things that came out this year. In fact a good deal of them aren’t from this year, as I am behind on a lot of media, but oh well, it’s my list! Which is also why instead of breaking things out into different categories I’m just gonna list them all in one go, because I’m disorganized that way. Also it will be in roughly chronological order, since that’s how I have them in my notes, but otherwise the order the things are in has no particular meaning.

MagicCon Chicago

The year started out well with my then partner (and now – well we’ll get to that, hang in there) and my first Magic event together since the pandemic started. I was super excited for it from the start despite not getting selected to staff it since not only did that mean I got to play in the events but I also got to do so with my lovely partner and – spoiler alert – our mutual girlfriend! It was also close enough to her home state of Missouri that she was able to take the train to hang out with us for most of the days, which is awesome since we don’t get to see her that often and we miss her dearly when we’re apart. We had a great time, got to see some really cool announcement panels live and in person, randomly met Graham from Loading Ready Run, played in Gavin’s “Unknown” event, each won our respective games of Ravnica Clue (MKM had just come out so people hadn’t soured on the format yet), and overall had a great time both at the event and around it, finishing with a visit to the Medieval Torture Museum because of course we did. A+ experience, would do again (and might, if we’re able to go to Chicago’s MC next year) The Con was made even more special because it was the first time I’d been to Chicago, which is where two of my three partners grew up, so it was so nice to be able to see their old stomping grounds (even if they were more from the suburbs than the city). The only sad part was that we didn’t have more time to sightsee, but maybe if we go next year we’ll have a chance to do more of that.

LDXP/Commandfest Daly City

The second big Magic event of the year, which was actually mostly underwhelming, but I’m putting it here because my compensation for judging at it allowed me to be able to afford the next item on my list, the…

Steam Deck

I love video games, especially PC games, but I have this weird thing where I never actually play them very often. Mostly this is because our TV is usually shared among the three of us (myself, Robin, and our mutual nesting partner Sonic), and I never really feel like monopolizing it with my games, or sitting at a computer away from the fam. I have a gaming laptop that I used to play games on but it broke earlier in the year and it was never really that optimal in the first place since it was heavy and always needed to be plugged in to its massive power brick. Enter the Steam Deck.

Since getting it I have played more games than I think I have in the past two or three years combined. It’s not great for every game, but for the ones that I enjoy it’s ideal. I can play it on the couch while hanging with the fam even with something on the TV, and the trackpad really works surprisingly well as a mouse replacement, so even non-controller games work pretty well on it. And only recently I figured out how to stream games from my Xbox to the Steam Deck so even the more graphical showcases (Like, most recently Dragon Age: The Veilguard) can be played while the TV is in use by others. Anyway, the first game I really got into on the Steam Deck is the next entry in this list.

Disco Elysium

ENCYCLOPEDIA – You remember the name from old gaming podcasts, what has replaced the well-worn video game magazines you remember from your childhood. You can still hear the voices of praise for its unique gameplay that hearkens back to an era long lost, an era of CRPGs and Point-and-Clicks

PHYSICAL INSTRUMENT [Medium: Success] – The plastic of the controller feels familiar in your hand. You guide your avatar among the digital landscape, exploring the streets of a world similar yet nothing like the world you exist in.

PERCEPTION [Formidable: Success] – You are able to reason out the puzzles, growing closer to your avatar as you solve problems for those around your avatar.

EMPATHY [Easy: Success] – More often than not you were responsible for the problems you end up solving, but you are nonetheless able to help these wretched people with their wretched lives to give them some small measure of comfort.

DRAMA – You find yourself absorbed in your character, my liege, though he is not much like you, and at the same time exactly like you.

RHETORIC [Godly: Success] – The texture of this world is communist, but it is no utopia. It is up to you to find the hope that is buried under the muck of society and reveal it to the world, raise a shining banner just like those who failed before you. You will fail again, but in the failing you take one step closer to saving the world.

AUTHORITY [Legendary: Failure] – You extol to as many as possible the virtues of Disco Elysium, but your words often fall on deaf ears. The game is old, they say. The graphics are lackluster. The story confusing, the atmosphere oppressive. You are aware of this but you see past it to the shining lungs within, you breathe in the world and its inhabitants.

ANCIENT REPTILIAN BRAIN – The game has touched you deep to your core. You are not the same person you were before you played it. You can never take it back, and you would never want to.

Night in the Woods

When this came out first I was at a very odd point in my life. My separation from my ex-wife was fresh, and depression was a spectre that was constantly looking over my shoulder. It was the perfect wrong time to play a game that wraps itself in the same kind of depression, of nostalgia and longing for a time that will never come again.

I am happy to say that I’m glad I waited. The game was excellent, and so touching and familiar even though I never lived in an American small town. The feeling of how fleeting the world can be still scares me, but games like these help me to get through them while not letting the good times and lessons of the past leave me, even when the world can never keep from changing.

Twin Peaks The Return

A podcast I enjoy was watching Twin Peaks as one of their side podcast projects, so I used that as an excuse to finally see the parts of the show that I never got around to (Fire Walk with Me and The Return, primarily). It was really interesting to dive into that world again, to see the culmination of one of the great filmmakers’ career, to reunite with the characters we fell in love with in the original, and to meet new ones to love (or sometimes hate). And one thing I will always remember, is it’s not about the bunny. (Is it about the bunny?) (No, it’s not about the bunny).

Fallout TV show

It turns out you can make a good adaptation of a video game, all you have to do is approach it with a real love of the franchise, disregard all the stories and characters that have baggage from the games, and instead tell a compelling story with great characters that are set inside the universe that people have come to love (even though I never played much of the games, I know enough to appreciate the fan service). It’s so easy! I’m actually looking forward to seeing where it can go with another season.

Fantasy High Junior Year (blimey!)

I don’t think you heard me, Blimey! Fantasy High is the first Dimension 20 series we watched, and it’s still one of the best. Being able to return to that world was so fun and exciting, and the characters are still just as vibrant and funny as they were at the start. Some of the moments (especially some of Ally’s nat twenties) will stick with me for some time, and I would easily be able to say that this was my favorite season of D20 that we watched last year, if it wasn’t for…

Never 💥 Stop 💥 Blowing 💥 Up

This was the most thrilling, off-the-rails, wacky, and just plain fun D20 series in a long time, possibly ever. Just a delightful send-up of 80’s-style action flicks, with just an amazing set of players and a GM who woke up and decided to not say no to pretty much anything the players wanted to do, no matter how wild and out-of-left-field they may be, with a new homebrew system that made Every. Single. Roll feel exciting and impactful. And remember: Without our siblings, we are nothing.

Battlestar Galactica (2004)

It was really fun to go back and rewatch this series with my then-partner. (I keep saying then-partner because it’s accurate but don’t worry, we’re still together. All will become clear later I promise). Part of the impetus was because we had just finished DS9 and were interested in seeing more Ronald D. Moore shows. Going back to this show after something like 20 years it’s interesting how my perspective has changed, how characters I didn’t care for the first time around have become faves simply because they are going through things that I can sympathize with in ways I couldn’t in my twenties. The ending is still bad but knowing it’s coming and seeing what foreshadowing they were able to include made it feel better this time around, and I still bawled like a baby at it. It’s a really good show that really holds up, even in the later seasons that were considered weaker at the time.

Anime

Frieren

One of my favorite parts of this series is that most of the names seem to come from someone looking up words in a Japanese-German dictionary, and as I speak German fluently, the results can be amusing. Like how the character who seemed like maybe might turn out to betray the party is named “Lügner” aka “liar”. Fun! But linguistics isn’t the only thing about the anime I loved. Its slow pace underlies a somber meditation on the meaning of mourning, growing, and changing that, while seen through the eyes of a millenia-old elf, nonetheless resonate in the hearts of us mere mortals. I was a bit turned off by the tournament arc, but it managed to not overstay its welcome, and I can’t wait for the second season (which is somewhat ironic given the subject matter.)

Also while I said I wouldn’t do rankings, this anime has the best ED song I’ve heard in a long, long time, and, spoiler alert, it will turn out to be relevant in a few months. Stay tuned!

Solo Leveling

(Yes I know these two are from 2023 they ended in 2024 so they still count)

I usually don’t really watch shounen anime, so I was surprised at how much this grabbed me. I’m having a hard time putting a finger on what was different about this one. I think a lot of it was in the masterfully-executed fight scenes, but the interesting worldbuilding certainly didn’t hurt. I’m looking forward to season 2 later this year.

The 100 Girlfriends Who Really, Really, Really, Really, REALLY Love You

Polyamory done right! A harem anime with a protagonist you don’t want to smack upside the head! Autism representation! Yuri! Age difference! And some of the best humor I’ve seen this year. 100 Girlfriends is really, really, really, really, REALLY good, and I can’t wait for the second season to start soon!

Dungeon Meshi

It’s a good thing I’m not ranking anime because it would be really hard to choose which would take the top spot. One of the candidates has to be Dungeon Meshi though. Trigger has a strong track record of amazing anime, and this one, based on a property that my girlfriend has long been a huge fan of, seems a little like a departure from their usual Sci-Fi fare. But they are still able to take opportunities to show off their amazingly fluid animation in battle scenes, and make the cooked monsters look mouth wateringly delicious at the same time. I was worried that my hang-ups around food might make this a hard watch, but it was quite the opposite. It’s rare to see this much (gay) autistic rep in a mainstream product like this, even if it was mostly subtextual. I fell in love with the party, and hope we get more of their adventures in the future.

Villainess Level 99: I May Be the Hidden Boss but I'm Not the Demon Lord

A cute little isekai anime about a (subtextually) autistic girl who accidentally power levels herself to the level cap and now has to integrate into a magic school where everyone is like level 4 or 5. I enjoyed it quite a bit, though the animation was a bit rough at times. Still, very cozy and sweet.

Komi can’t Communicate

Another anime focusing on a character with social anxiety, I made the rare choice to watch this dubbed, and here’s why: The show often features on-screen text, and in the sub those texts often went untranslated because the subtitles were translating what was being spoken instead. The dub uses the extra bandwidth to make sure the text still gets conveyed – and that’s just the reason I started with the dub. Turns out the voice cast was really talented and, to my slight surprise, full of queer representation. There is (at least in the dub) a non-binary character played by a non-binary VA, and a trans-femme VA playing a character who (if not explicitly then certainly in my headcanon) is trans herself. Also this was made extra special by being an anime that a good friend of mine would watch together, so it has a special place for me.

Uzumaki

We only watched the first episode of this sadly maligned anime – the only episode worth watching, given that immediately after producing it studio executives slashed the budget to a fraction of what had been promised, as well as outsourcing much of the animation to much cheaper studios. What promise this anime had in the first episode was quite impressive though, but I really can’t recommend this anime to anyone.

Nichijou

We finished it this year and it is probably the funniest Anime I’ve ever seen. Such comedic timing, such outlandish yet relatable situations, such great chemistry between the characters, and such great animation that didn’t have to go nearly so hard. I already want to start another watchthrough, but for now we’ve switched to Azumanga Daioh for the same tone slot.

Shikanokonokonoko Koshitantan

In the running for best OP, Shikanokonoko Koshitantan (or My Deer Friend Nokotan, if you’re boring) also fit the Nichijou time slot. It was weird, and random, and self-referential, and the PS2 deer were such an odd choice, but again, I’m a mere mortal, if I see a cute anime deer girl, you already got my interest!

Ranma ½

It really is special when someone who reinterprets a work for a modern audience approaches it with as much love and sensitivity as can be seen here in Ranma ½. I haven’t seen much of the original so I don’t have as direct a comparison as my girlfriend did, but what I did know is that it had some parts that… really did not age well. This adaptation not only pays loving tribute to its manga origins, but paints a picture of the main character that, while steeped in masculinity, doesn’t have the toxicity you usually see in these kinds of characters. And he also can be seen embracing parts of his feminine side when it’s something he finds joy in. Plus the OP slaps, the animation is vibrant and fluid, the humor is sharp, and it’s full of Gender™, what’s not to love?

Dandadan

It was really hard to decide on a favorite anime this year (harder than it usually is for me to pick a favorite) since there were so many good ones to choose from. Frieren, Ranma, and especially DunMeshi really blew me away, but if I had to choose a top spot, it has to be Dandadan.

Science SARU really outdid themselves with this quirky, high-octane action-comedy series. The animation is wild and the story so funny while still having a lot of heart. And then episode seven had me bawling like a child, it’s just so good. Who would have thought that a show about aliens trying to steal people’s penises and old granny spirits who want to steal balls would be the anime of the year for me, but here we are! Also the OP is one of my favorite in recent years, it slaps so hard!

Gencon

This year we finally made a pilgrimage I’ve been wanting to do for years now, which is to go to one of the biggest gaming conventions in the country, GenCon in Indianapolis. We went with our girlfriend and her husband, and while the hotel we stayed in was, charitably, a shithole, the con itself was amazing! I don’t often get chances to play TTRPGs, let alone the indie kind that I love. I could write a whole long post about our experiences there, but the short version is we had a ton of fun, had a lot of good games and experiences, and I got to see where my girlfriend is from for the first time (though we didn’t go to her hometown, we did see St. Louis which is another of the big cities I hadn’t been to yet)

Yazeba’s Bed and Breakfast

This RPG is practically the definition of “cozy”. Taking elements from legacy games, this mostly GM-less game has you playing the denizens and visitors of a fantastic Bed and Breakfast in a fantastic world where all that matters is how you treat others and yourself. Conflict is left at the door – at least the serious kind – and you watch as the characters grow and change. It also is chock full of queer, POC, and disability rep, which is always a plus in my book. This was the only RPG from the show that I ended up taking home a copy of.

Brindlewood Bay

What if a group of crime-solving older ladies (think Murder she Wrote or #1 Ladies’ Detective Agency) were confronted with an eldritch horror from beyond the stars? That’s the situation you find yourself in in this cozy mystery RPG. Based on PbtA, and drawing influence from nostalgic mystery procedurals (the playbooks are named after famous crime solvers from Miss Marple to Michael Knight), this game started with the players giving each other “gifts” to help build up their characters. And then at the end of the mystery, after you gather all the clues, the denouement / detective’s monologue are completely up to the players to decide who dun it (the mysteries and clues are predefined but the culprit is not), which takes a lot of the tension off of getting it right. Overall it was a lot of fun, and we hope to play another session soon.

Coyote and Crow

The game is already cool enough, taking place in an alternate timeline where travel between continents is all but impossible, so the North American native cultures were never touched by colonialism. What results is a vibrant, fully-realized world that revels in a culture that we are surrounded by the echoes of here in the USA. But the real highlight of this game (which I’ve owned a copy of since the kickstarter but was always a little intimidated by) was our GM, who just blew us all away with his dramatic flourishes that really drew out some amazing and deeply touching stories from the players. He was able to effortlessly reach into our psyches, pulling out our deepest insecurities and weaving them into our narratives in a safe-feeling way. He was native himself, and one of the contributors to the game, meaning the experience was even more authentic as a result. I am always a fan of learning about cultures that are not my own, and this was a good way to do so with play in a safe space. C&C was our last session of the con, and it really was a good way to go out on a high note.

Arcs

The only board game to make this list this year (which is kinda a shame since I wanted to play a lot more of them than I managed to, with the exception of my daily games with a friend of mine on BGA), Arcs is a masterclass in simple mechanics combining to make a deep and intricate gestalt. At its core it’s a 4X game, but turn mechanics and victory conditions are all determined by a simple trick-taking mechanic. (I’ve said “mechanics” so often it’s lost all meaning, there has to be a better word.) It looks gorgeous as well, and I’m excited to get it the table more often in the new year!

Bloomburrow

The first two Magic sets (well, premier sets) of the year were kind of disappointing, which is a shame because I had had high hopes for the both of them. So I was worried going into the third set that it would let us down as well. Turns out I needn’t have worried. Wizards took a world where everyone was tiny, cute woodland creatures (even visitors from outside the plane who got transformed to match the theme) and realized it as a fun, strong set with great mechanics and draft themes that worked really well together. It was a masterclass on how to make archetypes that seem like they would be completely unrelated, but then making hinge cards that effortlessly combine two themes in a way that may not be obvious at first but once you start playing with them you see how subtly the interactions work to bring the two themes together. It was a home run as far as I’m concerned and I hope we return to Valley sooner rather than later (I did get my wish somewhat in Foundations, with both Bloomburrow reprints and new cards set on the plane appearing.) Which leads us to…

Magic Foundations

If you had told me that 2024 would have what is pretty much the best core set since Alpha, I’m not sure I would have believed you. If you had told me that it was one of the best sets period from the past few years, I’d really be wondering why you came from the future and were telling me this of all things and not, like, the winning lotto numbers (or at the very least tell me to start looking for jobs in Germany), but hey, we all have our priorities. Magic Foundations nailed what a core set always had the potential to be, a taste of all of what Magic has to offer, both mechanically and flavorwise, in a set that has a great draft environment and a very novel approach to putting cards in Standard without having to have them make sense in Limited as well (thanks to the Beginner Box cards). Past core sets have often fallen into the trap of thinking beginner friendly equated to low power level or low mechanical complexity. And while that certainly is true to an extent, the sets that have brought the most new players to Magic (i.e. Lord of the Rings, and Ravnica and Zendikar before that) have been anything but. In fact complexity is often something that draws players in past their first few decks and intrigues them into exploring the full infinite possibilities in this game I love. It also brought back one of my favorite ways to play Magic in Jump Start, with a high-enough power level to ensure that the Jump Start packs are constantly sold out (it’s a blessing and a curse)

Potionomics

One of the coziest, cutest video games I came across last year is Potionomics, a game that feels like it was created with a laser focus on appealing to me, specifically. One of my favorite genres of games are card-based deckbuilding roguelikes like Slay the Spire. This game takes that core mechanic and mixes it with dating elements in a way that I love. The setting is a fantasy world where you are a plucky young potions brewer trying to grow your shop and defeat (and later befriend and/or date) your rivals. The humor is really cute, the art is pretty, and it’s got queer rep as well, but what really grabbed me are the selection of dateable characters. You have:

Deer-antlered fae woman (with a wooden prosthetic and fondness for smoking herbs)

In other words it’s a bit like if you took all my headmates and made them dateable characters. And in the update that came out late this year there’s even a polyamory mode, so I can make one big, queer, loving polycule as I improve the lives of this small community of adventurers.

MagicCon Vegas

I saved the best for last (even if that broke the chronological order somewhat but oh well it’s my list I’ll do what I want.)

This is the third Magic event I went to in Vegas, and like those two I was judging again. But unlike those two, I didn’t go to this Con alone, nor was the Con the highlight of the trip. You see, in the week or so leading up to the event we started making plans of how to spend our time (we had a day in Vegas before the Con to fill) and I happened to notice that our hotel was right next door to a wedding chapel. Ha ha, I said to my then-partner (foreshadowing!). Wouldn’t it be funny if…

But then we thought about it a little more. After all, we have the time and the money. And we’ve been engaged for four years almost, and we’re not any closer to actually having… And the elections are coming up and if things go wrong… And it sure would be a fun story to tell… And… and… and…

And we “Hahaha unless…”ed ourselves into (drum roll) getting married!

I’ll back up a bit. We got engaged in 2020, and while we have been planning to some extent what we wanted our wedding to look like, we suffer from the millennial affliction of “not having any savings” and in addition our ADHD makes it difficult for any of us to plan things that are more than a few weeks out. So when the thoughts about the possibility started swirling they really just started making more and more sense. So I made some calls, compared some options, and before I knew it we had an appointment to get married in (I shudder to think about how fast we were able to arrange it but) just over a week! Another last minute change we were able to make was to book our mutual nesting partner on a plane for a whirlwind trip to Vegas with us to be our witness. Fae also wove us a handfasting rope because we always liked that option for its symbolism in addition to it being a pagan ritual, and it was a way for our partner to be present in the ceremony in a very real way.

Then the day came. We got on a flight at the ass-crack of dawn, landed in Vegas and went straight to the courthouse to get our license, then to the wedding venue for a meeting to set up the ceremony. After that we spent the afternoon, well, sleeping mostly, and getting ready for the big event. But it wasn’t long before we were being picked up in a limo for the big event.

Our venue was a rooftop garden with a lovely gazebo. We were truly blessed by the weather and the timing, as we had our ceremony just as the sun was setting. The ceremony was livestreamed so that our mutual girlfriend and those who we would have loved to have join us could still take part even if not in person. The result was truly magical. My then-partner-now-wife (I told you the choice of words would make sense) and I walked down the aisle to Home from the Undertale soundtrack, exchanged our handwritten vows with tears streaming down our faces to the ED from Frieren (I told you it would come up again!), our hands and lives were bound together, and with the pinkest fluffiest clouds I’ve ever seen behind us, we joined our lives together for eternity, and I was the happiest I’ve ever been in my life. (And still am).

A lot of other fun stuff happened at the con. I got to work with two judges I was a fan of from YouTube and podcasts, got to meet some influencers, got a hug from Ben Ulmer of LRR, played in a fun Unknown event with Matt Tabak and Mark Rosewater, who I was able to meet and let know how much the game he is such an integral part of has shaped my life, and overall had a great Con. I also really loved being able to show off Vegas, one of my favorite cities to visit, to my partners who had either never been or only ever been off-strip before, including splurging on dinner at Gordon Ramsey’s pub at Caesar’s, and participating in a fun escape room just before our flight home (our partner had to leave the day after the wedding, sadly, so it was just the two of us, but we were in a room designed for exactly two players that involved us being chained to one another), but really those all pale in comparison to the actual high point of us getting married!

Conclusion

Well 2024 was one of the Years of all Time for us. It can be easy to let the end of the year cloud our memories of it, but looking back, it really was an amazing time. Some of the best experiences that I will treasure for the rest of my life happened in those ten months, and life didn’t stop after that. I’m still with the ones I love, I am still married, we are still persevering and we will continue to do so going forward. There are bound to be a lot of changes coming up, and 2025 is going to be a tumultuous year no matter what, but we are strong together. I love my partners so much, and I’m so happy I get to be with them even if dark times loom ahead.

I think i made myself clear as mud in my last post that the Batfam as it stands now in the comics does not mesh with the DCAU timeline.

but that doesn't mean the batfam can't come to Terry.

So. Here's Cake #3!!! Ya'll enjoy and if you make something i'd be happy to see it!

TL;DR: Cassandra steals a delayed Damian from the League of Assassins, reunites him with his elderly genetic donor, and decides to stick around. Dick decides that he should probably keep a closer eye on the manor. More people come out if the dark streets of Gotham, ready to fight to keep it safe.

Batman II gains Pranking Auntie Black Bat, Worried Uncles Grayson and Drake, Mob Parents Jason and Roy, the gossipy PIs Signal and Spoiler, and Murder Child Robin. Terry gets an existential crisis, Matt gets a some emotional and physical wounds, and Mary gets some inheritance money.

AKA: Beyond limited capes AU.

From the top, chronologically:

Cassandra lost her chance to train with Batman. He refused, after the Incident with Tim Drake and the Joker. Even though she was a trained fighter, he can't risk it. He can't risk anyone. He points her in the right direction for help and keeps tabs like he does.

Cassandra is adopted by Nightwing and becomes the Batgirl of Bludhaven, eventually Black Bat on her own, focusing on saving other children forced into a life of cloak and dagger.

(Jason Todd was never written into the DCAU shows. He and Tim Drake were condensed for reasons. But let's presume he was there the whole time. They were friends on the streets. He was late trying to help Tim find out what was in the locker. He remembers Robin later trying to help him before suddenly leaving. Overlooked by Batman, thus overlooked by the Joker, the League of Assassins, and heroics in general. But he survived. Saw all of the pain and anger and just decided to run his little piece of Gotham how he likes it. No starving kids. No heroes or villains. Absolutely no Jokerz. Roy Harper comes to break it up but then goes: hey I'm sorry but the Drug Lord just got me clean off drugs so I'm gonna marry him.) They are older gay mob grandpas with their daughter Lian.

Since the Joker is dead, Duke's parents are not affected by the Venom. He still has an interest in vigilantes. He was able to track what happened to Robin. Batman scares him off, but he's still determined to help. So like comics canon, Bruce points him to learning opportunities. He ends up becoming a Private Investigator, of Signal and Spoiler fame.

Batman saves Stephanie Brown from her shot at the cape. They also work closely with Barbara Gordon. Stephanie is also an investigative journalist and busts open several mob and villain rings with the help of Duke, Jason, and silent help from Batman.

Cadmus sees all of these new Robins keep getting denied left and right. Concerned that Batman was needed, they go ahead with Project Batman Beyond.

Bruce discovers this. He creates a false paper trail. A company was illegally creating clones/children of the rich for blood transfusions and organ transplants. And the occasional "long lost heir" con. It was easy enough to add Terry and Matt to the list before exposing them.

Bruce went over to the Mcginnis household with a lawyer and an NDA. Terry and Matt don't have a legal right to the Family Fortune, but they do have a small trust fund to be given when they're 18. (small is relative when you're rich.)

Terry grows up. He gets the job at Wayne Manor. (With Mary's blessing, of course.)

Terry tracks down Dick Grayson and they have a agreement about weekly emails. He never comes to Gotham. (Batman II, fighting Nightwing: PER MY LAST EMAIL-) Dick doesn't show up at the Manor at all. Not until Terry sees him scrubbing the Joker Graffiti off of the Batcave walls.

Now everything after this is post-ROTJ movie.

And then. Damian. The League of assassins has been trying to recreate Batman as well. But all of the clones consistently die around their 8th birthday. So the project was delayed by decades. They accepted a work around with the splicing tech. Damian wasn't originally related to Bruce and Talia. But they overwrote his DNA to truly make him the Heir. They were training him to take over the Batman mantle - he wasn't ready to do it yet, but then Terry as Batman II pops up. Damian is angry. Cassandra is able to sneak in and use that to smuggle him out to Gotham.

so now the Manor starts filling up with Dick, Cass, Damian, and occasionally Tim and Terry gets moved to a less hectic shift. He's bounced off of solo vigilante status and now has to contend with Cassandra and Damian following him around.

The official story is that the Cloning and corporate espionage happened and now Dick Grayson came back to Gotham to help his elderly father raise his clone and handle his affairs. He brought his security detail, Cassandra. Also they get Titus the emotional support dog for Damian.

Mary Mcginnis calls Bruce and renegotiates the terms of the NDA, since the cat's out of the bag. She sits Terry and Matt down and tells them that they're not genetically related to Warren. Terry. Does not take it well. Matt is confused and sad.

Damian hears about this and tries to kill Matt both as a "thing the League trained him to do" and "he's like me why does he get to be happy?" anger and jealousy over his life.

Batman II is seen wrangling a brightly colored child and demanding that he not stab his brother. Matt recognizes the wrangling and figures out who's under the cowl.

There are now officially two Robins. Pray you get the one without a sword.

(that's it it's just Terry adjusting from being a Single Child of Batman to being a Middle Child of the Batfam)

Love Beyond the Black - Masterlist

Not long after their arrival Wooyoung finds a boy washed up on sea, still alive, and the most gorgeous thing he has ever laid his eyes on. He is instantly entranced by him, taken by this boy with no memory of where he came from or why he had been washed up on shore. Wooyoung couldn't have cared any less about the unanswered questions, but how will he feel when he finds out the boy he has so very quickly fallen in love with turns out to be one of the most revered pirates to have ever sailed the seas?

It's hard to explain but I see them in their groups as almost characters in a sense, but whatever my boys decide to do in their real lives outside of the groups, I fully and completely support them as long as they are happy :) And with that being said, if this isn't the kind of fic for you, it's okay if you don't read it!

Second, this is going to be a very different fic from anything I have ever written before (I think). It's not going to be super dark or anything, perhaps a tad bit more angsty then usual, but it is a fic about pirates so there will be fighting, and blood, and violence, some homophobia because of the time period. Though keep in mind there will be a happy ending for our boys, and that the major character death in the tags does not apply to either San or Wooyoung. There will be NO rape or non-con, I do not mess with that, but there will be lots of smut, as promised.

HI FAM, for Talk to Me Tuesday - give me some headcanons about Pravin relating to Orlesian theatre culture! What's all of that like for him?

HELLO I have an entire document called ~theater stuff~ for thissss

To start off--broadly, there are three ways of being an actor in Orlais:

Traveling troupe system: joining a troupe of other actors, who go around the country performing at different locales, such as at community events like festivals and market days, as well as in intimate settings like taverns, inns and private homes.

Patronage system: a wealthy patron puts together a troupe of actors and hosts them at one or more venues. Actors contract with the patron for a period of time--such as for a social season--and are paid in accordance with the contract.

Audition system: actors audition for roles in a particular production. This system is used by several high-demand venues, such as the Grande Royeaux, to acquire performers especially fit for a given part.

Each approach has its own pros and cons--troupes tend to have the most freedom in terms of what plays they choose to put on, for instance, but the most unreliable pay because they're doing gig work; patronage is good in terms of job stability but you don't have as much input in terms of who you're working with and what you're working on, and auditioning is a high-barrier-to-entry approach that nevertheless tends to be super financially lucrative--provided you get picked, of course. In practice most actors start out in a troupe and shift around between the three modalities over the course of their career.

Pravin fucked off to Orlais in the middle of the Blight, so probably sometime in 9:30, and it took him a bit over a year, maybe two, to get in with a troupe that he really gelled with and have his first big break (playing a Sexy Antivan Pirate). He got a patron out of that and spent some time in that system in Val Chevin, but wound up being typecast and underpaid and had to do gigs on the side; he actually got into bard work through Gaubert asking for help in getting that patron's husband arrested, lol. Alongside his general mistrust of authority that came out of his experiences in the Blight, that whole thing really turned Pravin off from patronage, period (as did, you know, the difficult political situation of being a professional bard), so since then he's alternated between actually touring with a troupe, various one-off gigs, and auditioning for parts.

He's really proud of getting roles at the Grande Royeaux precisely because it's competitive as hell and really signifies being at the peak of his craft--you don't get in unless you're really good, and you sure as fuck don't get a leading role unless you're one of the best in the country. It's something that carries a huge amount of clout within the theater community, and needless to say, is especially impressive for a foreigner.

Coming back around to culture: I think one of the things Pravin's spent much of his career doing is proving himself worthy of the country he's made his home. Orlais is this beacon of culture in Southern Thedas, and while I imagine there's some cross-pollination of Orlesian practices into Antivan theater culture (and standards around what constitutes good musicianship are pretty uniform, given dissemination through the Chantry), there's still significant differences, such as the visual language of masks. Pravin had some skill transfer from his musical training and the acting he did while he was at university in Antiva, and speaking Orlesian fluently and without an accent helped substantially, but when he came into the Orlesian scene he still had to familiarize himself with a multitude of cultural minutiae, and while the Orlesian theater community itself is welcoming by default--the Orlesian public? Not so much. His fellow actors quickly dubbed him their beloved Denci; his audiences would take one look at his skin tone and nevertheless see him as an outsider, with all the expectations of inferiority that went along with that. So when he did secure that leading role at the Grande Royeaux, it not only meant that he was an extremely talented actor and musician, but that he was an excellent Orlesian actor. Not some token Antivan good at imitating the form, but actually Orlesian.

(And that's part of why at the beginning of Inquisition's events he's kind of hitting a point where he doesn't know what to do with himself. He's made it. He's gotten to the top. He should be content with his life, then...right?)

plot bunny

So I had a new plot idea. Just a thought I found interesting but anyone can feel free to take it and use it, just let me read it too 🥺

It probably fits in for any fandom, it was just thought up as a (reverse) harem setting (or at least for multiple pairings side by side) and I thought it up as a MDZS fanfic so I explain it in that setting further down.

TW: period typical racism/homophobia/sexism, slavery is a big plot point and all the issues it has, like potential non/dub con (nothing happens but it is mentioned and other characters think it is normal and what should be happening)

I tried tagging it properly but do let me know (kindly)

The basic idea was:

an AU set in the age of discovery (yes I am european fam, even had to look up the name for this in english kkkk) with an OC/reader insert that is financially Independent from their family and is very eccentric in their spendings (yes they have a family but for some reason the family does not interfere in their business. bonus points if OC is a woman since sexism was a thing at the time)

now characters from canon are being sold as slaves (not all at once, just the one first and then keep them coming and adapt to the fandom/character) OC was established as rich and eccentric so they buy the character and take them home but (not so shocking) treat them very kindly.

Now I'll describe this as I thought it up but again, I think this might fit in for any fandom/characters and I would really like seeing other people's take on this

OC is rich and has a family but is independent from them. I go so far as to think she is the main source of income and status for them, despite some of that having established before her. So she has her own house and does her own spendings and her fam can´t publicly interfere but they do some bashing behind her back (and to her face cuz she is a softie, especially for the family) but she will still try to stand her ground to do the things she wants and they let her cuz this is how they got their wealth and fame so far.

She is at the market and sees slave traders and is going to move past until the foreign looking (they are all foreign, it's why people decided they should be slaves - eww - but this one looks different from any other slave and is even being marketed as such). She decides to take him in so she buys him and brings him home. She speaks a couple of languages (I am making it be an unusual thing for that time but she is a language afficionado - ignore my projecting pls) but not his so another plot point is her personally teaching him and learning from him.

It's Jiang Cheng. He is moody but nothing if not adaptable and quickly resigns himself to playing along for his own sake until he can figure something else out. She takes him home, lets him bathe and gets the servants to bring over picture books and the most basic reading and writing learning books and tools. She starts personally teaching him.

Some more projecting and the OC is portuguese but speaks english so she tries to tell him only she speaks english here but if he wants to learn that or portuguese. (haven't quite decided which one he chooses and further down the line I decided they also have their own sign language system - a mix of pt sign language and other signs). She goes through the classes with him and even tries to learn some of his in return.

Cute moment when she introduces herself and he does too but she struggles A LOT with the tones for his name and he gets her to call him just Jiang, and he calls her by her first name (she insists and he isn't fully aware of it until later)

She teaches him some basic cultural stuff like how to greet someone (as in the bowing, the language stuff will come a bit later, she is on the more basic but key stuff, so basic nouns for a while).

She also lets him pick his own clothes. She calls over a servant, gestures for clothes and points to both the servant's and his clothes expectantly until he decides to keep his clothing style. She take shim to the tailors and I am playing on the assumption they have their own fabrics for clients to choose from in there so she lets him pick the fabric for his main outfit but they also get him some "normal" ones. He picks purple obviously, and she lets him, no matter how expensive purple fabric actually is - she is rich so she should spend it, no?

(this paragraph has mentioned/discussed dub con but nothing happens) Last character specific point (or at least that gets really developed for the first character that appears) is how everyone expects that he will be a sex pet (I am sorry) so a room isn't prepared for him - he is expected to sleep in her bed and with her. He is taken by the butler (who is period typical and therefore not very supportive of all the progressive shit she does and how she does it but hasn't been disrespectful so far) who lets him get washed up and then has him kneeling on the floor in her bedroom waiting for her in just his pants. She comes in, sees him there, touches his cheeks all tender but with a very obvious sadness in her eyes. She kisses his forehead and takes his hands to lead him to the bed but tucks him in, and then gets in herself (let her do a speed run of her nightly routine, baby deserves her -limited - skin care). she lies next to him and even holds his hand but nothing more. they wake up cuddled to each other but nothing happened other than that forehead kiss and hand holding (*~kya~* lol) and nothing happens the continuing nights.

Now onto more characters (that part was long cuz 1 gives a lot of setting and a lot of things are explained now because they will be very similar for all characters and 2 I love JC, if you didn't know)

I thought of letting Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian come next, caught as a pair. She is once more out and about, with JC, and he spots them. He tells her and she buys them, gives them a similar treatment, she has JC to explain the things he already knows and things go a bit smoother with that extra bit. JC tells her they are a couple so she gets them the room next to hers. JC keeps sleeping with her cuz the alternative is to sleep next to that couple and we all know they like their "everyday" (he also really likes sleeping next to her but will never admit it out loud). I havent developed much for these two so far except that I wanna play with Wangji's mommy issues so....

She is a bit keen on physical touch but not keen on crossing anyone's boundaries so she goes slowly. Hand holding is mostly for outings in crowded spaces (there are 3 guys now but she holds hands with JC and one of wangxian who hold hands themselves and problem solved) but she opens her arms wide open to express intent to hug and holds her hand next to the body part she wishes to touch (arm or face, dont be perverts - yet) and only touches if they acknowledge her intent and allow her (not moving away from her or pushing her away/pushing her hand to where they wouldn't mind/actually want her touching - no perverted shit *yet*). Wangji is actually keen on this and one time she caresses his face and he calls her "A-niang". She is clueless so far so she tilts her head and Wangji, emboldened by this, points to her and repeats it, before pointing at himself and saying "baobei". she understands this is something about how to address each other so she complies and calls him "baobei", not noticing his red ears and the shocked faces on the other two. Include a scene of WWX and JC confronting him about it and he is unfazed, in one of the language classes she still insists on personally giving, LWJ tells her and she doesn't mind either, whatever floats their boat (she is SOOOOOO into all of them but the whole master-slave thing makes consent an issue so she has decided to NEVER do anything with none of them - she can't even be sure if even if they initiated it, if it was out of a sense of obligation or because they really wanted her)

On the topic of forms of address, after trust is established and feelings, LWJ calls her A-niang and she calls him baobei, JC calls her a normal nickname for wtv name she has and she calls him A-Cheng at first and later on (after the A-niang incident) she calls him Cheng-ge (he is flustered cuz it never happened before but he is indeed older than her so she says it's only right), WWX is A-Xian/Xianxian and calls her Jiejie/*name/nickname*-jie.

Later on come 3zun. Kinda wanna separate Lan Xichen, he arrives first and Wangji recognizes him so we all know now she has to buy him too (and traders start to see she only buys this type of slaves and this might become an issue, and also now she has 2 similar ones and they think they can finally start to understand her preferred type - joke's on them hehe). The others help him blend in, etc etc, he has the gentlest vibes and maybe later on can be a bit of a right hand man to her (as well as JC because I say so and he is the one that has been with her the longest). Nie Mingjue and Jin Guangyao/Meng Yao come later but together (yes NMJ is still alive, I need his himbo energy). They are at odds with each other anyway and as she is trying to buy them, she hasn't brought enough money on her to buy both so she tries to bargain by trying to trick the merchant into a buy 1 get 1 free (throwing in a bit extra above the normal price for one so its more like a discount on the second one) and oh the mental implications this has on JGY that OC is gonna deal with.

Also just thought that Nie Huaisang will have to come looking for his brother but he at least is smart enough to come as a master himself and not a slave so he becomes her esteemed guest.

Other peripherical thoughts include her family visiting and the guys seeing the strained relationship and becoming protective of her, talks of releasing them/them escaping, thoughts of them bringing in different ideas that she capitalizes on (if one of the ideas evolves enough she might let the guy that came up with it be in charge of it), slice of life shennanigans, what pairings and they interact how (otp, 3tp, moretp ?), the servants not being understanding or not sharing in her views about the boys and being fired, reference about how she bows to them too low (she is the master and they her slaves) but even after they explained to her she souldn't bow so low, she insists even more on bowing like that, to show she sees them as her equals, how she wants kids but doesn't have a husband - men don't want her to keep her power and influence (period typical shit) and she would ruin her own reputation if she had a kid out of wedlock so she has resigned herself to not hving kids.

Possible other plot points include pressure for her to marry, business competition sabotaging her, attempted assassinations/kidnappings, one of the boys acting out in public and the consequences, her household staff messing up/messing with the guys/with her, a time of some business issues because cultural and societal views on her and how they overcome them.

Would love to hear your thoughts on atfots… the plot really surprised me given how the last book ended but overall it felt like a mixed bag to me

I'm not even going to pretend that this will be short or coherent so tl;dr: if I'm looking for a fun AU, I turn to ATFOTS; if I'm looking for canon compliant, meaningful sequels to HOTE, I turn to fanfiction.

General disclaimer that here be spoilers for ATFOTS and that while I don't intend this to be lambasting ATFOTS by any means, it's not the most positive review. So like, don't read below if you a) want to avoid spoilers or b) enjoyed the book, probably?

I think there are roughly 2 main categories of critique I have for ATFOTS, with a third just being the catchall for anything I miss and/or me yelling about the things that matter most to me lol so:

I. Sequel Sins

I am generally not a fan of sequels primarily because I think they tend to fall into a lot of similar traps such as overexplaining, inconsistent characterization, and undermining their own themes. This may be a product of growing up in love with sprawling series that all wound up basically having the same formula. ANYWAY.

Overexplaining: ATFOTS starts off by reintroducing Cliopher Mdang. My good sir. The POV character for the other doorstopper novel that came before (& which I love). I get the desire to make a sequel accessible to people who haven't read the first book but ATFOTS feels consistently like it's holding your hand very gently and bending down to make sure you're getting its full sincere eye contact and talking very slowly. I don't have a copy of the book on me to pull quotes, but it's especially flagrant in the first couple chapters.

Inconsistent characterization: WHOO BOY. Cliopher is so old! No he's young again! Now he's middle-aged! I have mixed feelings on the characterization overall—Rodin, for instance, came a bit out of left field—and most of it comes down to the way I loved the characters in HOTE and then in ATFOTS they all felt...a bit flatter and a bit caricaturized and a bit less true.

Undermining themes: The character thing comes in hard here IMO. One of the major threads of HOTE is Kip shaping his own path of success and receiving acknowledgment from his loved ones for his unique, uncommon route. And then ATFOTS comes in and is like ACTUALLY we're going to overwrite that with this GRAND and MYTHOLOGICAL story that also conveniently follows closely the story that will be familiar to your family. This isn't to say there isn't value in that type of story, but it definitely cheapens (imo) the thematic value of HOTE. And this is true for...kind of a lot of the stories' themes. ATFOTS seems to want to be "HOTE themes but bigger and better" and in doing so, kind of falls flat in delivery imo.

II. ATFOTS-Specific Pro/Con

Alright now onto a little more specific issues. This will be brief bc I think they're pretty self-explanatory lol

Con: Overall, I think ATFOTS tries to do too many things. I love a good book with many plotlines (see: erha my beloved) but ATFOTS' structure felt borderline episodic rather than building together into a satisfying reveal/culmination.

Pro: I'll get into Kip's sexuality below but do love the concept of fanoa

Con: It felt like a lot of tidbits of "oh ACTUALLY this was happening all along in HOTE I just didn't mention it"—see the comment that started this all around humming Aurora—in a way that felt less like a delightful little revelation and more like VG retroactively trying to incorporate things she hadn't decided on till that moment. Also feel this way about Ludvic's fam reveal but I'll get into that below.

Pro/Con: While I think the writing structure was a little tighter than HOTE (I'm sorry, I love Kip and I love HOTE but there were like 200 pages of having the same conversation over again) (maybe not actually 200. possibly 20. still.), girlie REALLY needed a copy edit. Like. I will copy edit ur book Ms. Goddard for u (I am cheap) but please let me fix the errors.

III. Getting My Grubby Little Gay Hands All Over this Book

aka personal preference shit that is entirely my opinion without critique for the writing quality but nonetheless are part of my critique

I love HOTE and I love HOTE principally for three four main categories: The Household (and Them), civil service, being The One Who Left, and ASEXUALITY BABEY. There are other aspects I love, of course, but these are kind of the big non-negotiables for me and four that ATFOTS kinda...did dirty imo.

In terms of the Household, HOTE gave us these middle-aged dudes who are pretty much defined and fulfilled by their dedication to their job to the exclusion of most other things. Kip has family but it's not family that really understands him most of the time and it's family that is very far away (*this will come up again). The rest of them don't have family outside of the household. They are very sincerely found/forced thru work family in a way that feels both very natural and blessedly free of nuclearization. They love each other and understand each other** in a way that none of them really have access to outside of this group.

And then ATFOTS (and admittedly RPA) comes along and is like "Ludvic has a dad! Conju's sister and boytoy are alive! Rodin has a devoted penpal!" in a way that feels a BIT like pairing off everyone so that the main couple can be together. Which like. I love Kip/Fitzroy, don't get me wrong, but I love the household and their weirdly intimate and formal and seemingly smooth as clockwork but internally messy vibe. I was so looking forward to reading about the retirement house and how that unspools (or at least thinking a lot about it in the way of the blorbo in the microwave) before ATFOTS.

So much of the heart of HOTE is the idea of community and connection (or isolation) and ATFOTS mostly veers away from that both thru the pairing off and through the things like Kip's solo adventures. It also, in some ways, sort of undermines some of the characters' core traits, such as Ludvic's devotion. Ludvic being a stout, unflinching companion for HR because he believes in him and sees the true man behind the Serenity is imo very different from Ludvic being an unflagging companion because he views HR as his uncle. Idk about y'all but family duty and personal devotion from choice are two different things in my experience.

On their own, they aren't bad but they are disappointing when compared to the aspects of HOTE I loved and would have hoped to see expanded upon in the sequel.

Kip's experience in civil service is also really important to me (literally made me more patient and cheerful at work when I was actively envisioning setting a plague of frogs loose upon my supervisor's house so like. Significant Importance to Me.)! This will not be articulate (I've legit been starting and deleting this sentence for like 5 min) bc it's very near and dear to my heart but the ideas of a) choosing to take a harder path, that is outside your community/family's conception of "normal" because you believe it is good and worthy, b) trying to improve a shitty system because you believe it can be made to better serve the people, and c) learning from both systems—are! just! very important to me okay. And not something I see a lot in fiction, but especially not in my most beloved of monstrously large fantasy novels.

And then ATFOTS is just JK time for an epic fantasy romp! and that's cool but that's not why I loved the first book! that's not the right tone at all!!! if i wanted an epic fantasy romp I would pick up Iron Widow but I wanted the bureaucracy D: (shoutout to ao3 user alfgifu for giving me the bureaucracy and also sorry for all the nonsense comments)

This is also super closely tied to Being the One Who Left tbh because well. Me. But one of the core elements of HOTE—the part that actually first snagged me and pulled my attention in—is that Kip is the one who left his community behind for no good reason to chase a weird dream instead of settling down and following the normal path to success.

*eyeing my high school classmates who are all settled down with 2.5 kids and starting photography businesses on the side while living within 20 minutes of where they grew up* Huh I Wonder Why This is Relatable

At the heart of being the one who left is this tug between guilt and desire/love/duty/curiosity/whatever pull factor. In HOTE, Kip is pushed to stay home by his duty to his community, his love of his family, and his family's own pressure. He's pulled to stay in the service by his duty to the world/government, his love of his found family, and by the urge to do more, to make things better as much as he can. In both places, he's not fully understood and when he's in either location, he misses the other. The importance is the tug, the dual identity, the sense of always being partially understood and partially misunderstood in different ways depending on the ground you're standing on. I could...very literally, write essays on each of these last items but I am trying to wrap it up bc I should actually be coding rn whoops

ATFOTS blots this out by transforming his Solaara experience into, basically, Just A Job. A job he cares about and can be proud of, sure, but just the job. It really...kind of aggressively, ignores the relationships and life Kip has made there in favor of focusing solely on this glorious return to home while conveniently giving everyone else people to be with instead of the household. which I'm sure my mom would like but ANYWAY

and now, last but decidedly not least OR clearest *drum roll pls* ASEXUALITY BABEY

okay so I will caveat this by saying different rep serves different people, there are infinitely many ways to be asexual, etc etc that all being said ATFOTS' handling of Kip's sexuality just left me a little...dissatisfied? And tbh I struggle to articulate it because I feel like it probably comes down to "this isn't the rep I would like but I can see where it's meaningful to others."

Like I can justify it—a lifelong commitment as fanoa is described is different than a romantic or sexual relationship, it's entirely fair to have a character want that commitment without risking it by mixing in romance/etc., it's good to have a devoted and platonic relationship at the core where normally a (straight) romantic/sexual relationship would be

and yet. I caught myself making faces at the book half the time when dealing with their relationship. Some of it feels a little like trying to Do All The Rep in one go—Kip's tingly fuzzy feelings and (mostly) lack of romantic attraction, neutrality around sex and aversion to sex in this relationship—in a way that almost definitely describes actual humans out in the world but feels a little...off in a fictional character? My general wish for asexual characters is getting to be in devoted relationships where the allosexual partner(s) is willing to not have sex and still be committed but I caught myself being like "y'all just fuck already" in ATFOTS which is uhhhh not the norm

tbf my ideal Kip/Fitzroy retirement relationship is basically just them (and the household) all living together and everyone on the outside kind of being ???? is it a sex thing???? while they contentedly carve out their own life yet again but this time with more touch and laughter and song.

Actually having gotten to this point, I feel like my main sticking point with ATFOTS sexuality is that Sex Is A Big Thing in the book while never being super effectively resolved imo and also not actually being a big thing to the characters in HOTE. Like one of these dudes has been celibate for 1000 years or so and another one has had like 3 brief lovers across the same amount of time. I think there are some other things we could focus on here
