It's time for Beginnings, the podcast where writer and performer Andy Beckerman talks to the comedians, writers, filmmakers and musicians he admires about their earliest creative experiences and the numerous ways in which a creative life can unfold.

On today's episode, I talk to writer and director Jim Mickle. Originally from Douglassville, PA, Jim studied film at NYU and then worked his way up in the industry, eventually deciding to make his own film in 2006, Mulberry Street, with frequent collaborator Nick Damici. Each film they made got a little more attention: Stake Land, We Are What We Are and Cold In July, which premiered at Sundance and was scooped up by IFC Films. From 2016 to 2018, Jim and Damici showran the Sundance TV show Hap and Leonard, and most recently, Jim has showrun three seasons of the Netflix Jeff Lemire adaptation Sweet Tooth, whose third season debuts today!

being in a small fandom is like being given a bone, chewing on it until you're done with it, burying it in your backyard, and then digging that same chewed up bone months later to continue chewing on it, and then the cycle just repeats.this is especially true for small fandoms that you know won't be getting any new content, so you just have to consume the content you've already consumed thousands of times before.

It is/was a little quiet around Michael´s movie/TV career for a while so I was glad I could enjoy "Cold In July" on my TV screen a couple of days ago and I was surprised how much I was entertained by this movie although I know the plot and it´s not new (it´s from 2014).
I found an interview with Michael with "The Film Stage" about the process of working with Don Johnson and late Sam Shepard.
The style and the mood of this movie is constantly changing and even Michael, who is the main actor in it, got surprised to see the finale cut of it at the premiere. Here is an excerpt of the interview:
I assume you didn’t shoot "Cold In July" chronologically, was it quite an experience seeing it all at once and seeing how far your character goes?
"Yes, it felt like at least three movies in one. We didn’t shoot it chronologically, but we did shoot with some sort of continuity in as much as the first things we shot were the bulk of the domestic scenes in the house and some of the stuff in the frame shop.
Then Sam [Shepard] showed up and we started to shoot a good amount of that stuff and it felt like a completely different movie. I remember we were shooting what felt like a Coens brothers-esque domestic drama — sort of comic elements, but also very tense.
I go, ‘Wow, what is it going to be like when Sam comes?” and then Sam came. And everything changed. Then I said, “What’s it going to be like when Don [Johnson] shows up? [laughs]. So in a way, the shooting of it did kind of feel like the experience of watching it. The world just kept shifting."

Too cold 🥶
Tumblr media
I got an early start this morning because it’s garbage day. It’s only 47F degrees out there, or you can call it 8C degrees. It’s still cold for July 1st.
The corn is almost 6 feet tall now. My tomato plants are healthy and I have a small green pepper starting.
I am NOT turning the heat on in the house this morning. My coffee is done, I hope it warms me up.
Happy July my friends 😊

The Canadian winters can get cold, and sometimes Frank doesn't realize that till the Legion is already out. I was originally going to have Frank's mask in front of his toque, but I prefer it this way, it looks like he just quickly put on the hat without a second thought. Now that he's all bundled up, the Legion is ready to graffiti some walls and key cars >:D

I'd like to think that Dandy in their scarecrow costume actually seems to attract crows instead of "scare" them.
The whole time they're in their getup, a crow or a few follow and linger around them. At first startling Dandy at the begining of their Halloween celebration and eventually they just sort of get used to them.
