It's time for Beginnings, the podcast where writer and performer Andy Beckerman talks to the comedians, writers, filmmakers and musicians he admires about their earliest creative experiences and the numerous ways in which a creative life can unfold.
On today's episode, I talk to writer and director Jim Mickle. Originally from Douglassville, PA, Jim studied film at NYU and then worked his way up in the industry, eventually deciding to make his own film in 2006, Mulberry Street, with frequent collaborator Nick Damici. Each film they made got a little more attention: Stake Land, We Are What We Are and Cold In July, which premiered at Sundance and was scooped up by IFC Films. From 2016 to 2018, Jim and Damici showran the Sundance TV show Hap and Leonard, and most recently, Jim has showrun three seasons of the Netflix Jeff Lemire adaptation Sweet Tooth, whose third season debuts today!

Books Read in 2023 #1 - “Born For Trouble” by Joe R. Lansdale
This latest collection of Hap and Leonard stories focuses on our heroes in their later years as they try and settle down into something more resembling a normal life while working for a private investigator agency run by Hap’s wife.
But there’s no need to worry that they have been tamed as these five stories contain the requisite amount of sick crime, murder, and mayhem in true Hap & Leonard style.
While the mystery and action of these stories is always fun (in a twisted sort of way) it is the relationship between Hap and Leonard that is the heart and soul of these books. It’s for that reason that my favorite part of this collection is the first part of “The Briar Patch Boogie” story which is nine pages of the two of them just bitching at each other about a failed fishing trip.
BTW even if you haven’t read a single Hap & Leonard novel the recent short story collections are very accessible and a great way to discover these characters.

Hardman: Atlanta Deathwatch by Ralph Dennis
Hardman 1 Atlanta Deathwatch by Ralph Dennis Popular Library 1974
Jim Hardman is a disgraced former cop who operates as an unlicensed private detective, along with other minor criminal hustles. He's teamed up with former NFL player Hump Evans, more than a sidekick but doesn't get full co-billing.
Hardman is hired by The Man, a godfather in the Black gangs of Atlanta, to find the killer of his secret white collage-aged girlfriend. This leads Hardman and Evans from the Black bars of Atlanta to rural redneck drinking holes to high priced lawyers and politicians.
The vibe sits nicely between Parker and Hap & Leonard, and the ride along the way works better than the plot, which for me kind of went off the rails a bit towards the end.
The language won't work for some modern audiences. Some of it falls in the category of "reflecting the gritty realities of 1970s Atlanta criminal underworld" while some is just outdated language. When half your characters are African American, using "the black" as a generic pronoun isn't very helpful. Mostly has its heart in the right place, but definitely from a White perspective.

Happy Birthday to the Scottish actress and director Pollyanna McIntosh born on 15th March 1979 in Edinburgh.
McIntosh grew up in Portugal and Colombia before returning to her native Scotland, where she first began performing, on stage, at The Edinburgh Festival. At 16, she left for London and soon became involved in indie filmmaking, her first paid gig was unaccredited as a stoner in the Irvine Welsh triptych The Acid House, I must remember to ask my mate Gary McCormack if he knows her, as he had a starring role in the film.
Pollyanna moved moved to LA in 2004 where she appeared mainly on stage her biggest role of note was in the stage production The Woolgatherer before she earned her first big screen role, Stacy in 2005’s fantasy horror film, Headspace in 2005.
Although there is not much about her personal life, channel hopping Pollyanna must have been in demand in both the US and over this side of the Atlantic, she turned up in an episode of Taggart in 2009, and some low key US TV movies and a small part in Burke & Hare alongside David Hayman and Simon Pegg. Her first lead role was in a movie called The Woman which won a few awards around the European film festivals.
Back on the TV front Pollyanna was back over here in Waterloo Road and appeared in five of the six episodes of Bob Servant Independent, with the brilliant Brian Cox, the same year she turned up in her second Irvine Welsh film, Filth, with James McAvoy. McIntosh also played a regular in the Children’s BBC show M I High as Crime Minster.
Pollyanna’s first major role over in America was in the excellent Hap and Leonard, where she starred as Angel in Season one, she went on to star in two Seasons of the popular series Walking Dead as Anne ‘Jadis’ and has a recurring role in comedy-drama Lodge 49.
In 2020 Pollyanna starred in the horror thriller Revenge Ride about a young woman who joins an all-female gang and seeks revenge on a group of college American football players Pollyanna turned up as Anne in 6 episodes the spin off series The Walking Dead: World Beyond
Sticking with the horror theme that she has found her niche, she has a starring role in a Western-Horror called The Moonshine Gang of Cheyenne which is currently in development, Pollyanna has also turned up in Vikings: Valhalla as Queen Ælfgifu. Miss McIntosh has a number of projects coming up one being a Sci-fi film The Primary Talent and a short Em & Selma Go Griffin Hunting.
Pollyanna McIntosh does her bit for charity, campaigning for the Joshua Nolan Foundation, raising funds for counselling sessions for grief-stricken relatives and those at risk of suicide, she is married to Grant Show who plays Blake Carrington in the reboot of Dynasty.
IMDB have nothing new on Pollyanna, but there is a chance that she will appear in the upcoming Walking Dead Spinoff after rumors began circulating on social media that Pollyanna has been seen on the set.

From Dark to Very Dark to Black
I recently read and love these three books. I’m a huge fan of Joe Lansdale so I couldn’t help loving this anthology.
S.A Cosby wrote the introduction ot Lansdale’s anthology and I love this dark story that caused me a serious book hangover
I think that Ronald Malfi is an excellent horror storyteller and Black Mouth was one of my top books of last year.
Below my reviews and info about each book:
All The Sinners Bleed by S. A. Cosby
Titus Crown is the first Black sheriff in the history of Charon County, Virginia. In recent decades, Charon has had only two murders. After years of working as an FBI agent, no one knows better than Titus that while his hometown might seem like a land of moonshine, cornbread, and honeysuckle, secrets always fester under the surface.
But a year to the day after Titus’s election, a school teacher is killed by a former student. The student is then fatally shot by Titus’s deputies. As Titus investigates the shootings, he unearths terrible crimes, and a serial killer who has been hiding in plain sight, haunting the dirt lanes and woodland clearings of Charon. With the killer’s possible connections to a local church and the town’s harrowing history weighing on him, Titus tries to project confidence about closing the case while concealing a painful secret from his own past. At the same time, he also has to contend with a far-right group that wants to hold a parade in celebration of the town’s Confederate history. Charon is Titus’s home and his heart. But where faith and violence meet, there will be a reckoning.

My Review: The audiobook of Razorblade Tears was how i got to know S.A. Cosby. All Sinners Bleed is a book that got me hooked since the beginning, punched me in a way that i loved and didn't want to stop being punched, a left me with a terrible book hangover. It's twisty, dark, a sort of southern gothic noir that deals with racism, prejudice and doesn't sugarcoat or hide any issues or nastiness that can be found in a small town. Titus, the sheriff, is a clever man who believe in what is doing but must also face the fact that someone is still nostalgic of the lazy and white previous sheriff. It's not a cozy or light read, there's dark humour and there's a master storyteller that keeps you turning pages. I loved it and It's strongly recommended. Many thanks to Headline for this digital copy, all opinons are mine
The Author: S. A. Cosby is an Anthony Award-winning writer from Southeastern Virginia. He is the author of the New York Times bestseller Razorblade Tears and Blacktop Wasteland, which won the Los Angeles Times Book Prize, was a New York Times Notable Book, and was named a best book of the year by NPR, The Guardian, and Library Journal, among others. When not writing, he is an avid hiker and chess player.

Lansdale (the Hap and Leonard series) returns to the piney, dangerous woods of East Texas to reveal the best of his award-winning crime fiction.
Book page: https://tachyonpublications.com/product/things-get-ugly/
My Review: I'm sure Joe R. Lansdale cannot write a bad or boring story. He can write stories that brings very far from my comfort zone, dark story, story where the dog dies or mix of all the possible elements. But he always write great stories that make you face the darker side of life.. And always add a pinch of dark humour that makes you smile even if you are immersed in blood up to your here. This is not a book for you if you do not want to read about the darker side of life or hate too much violence and gore But if you want to read an anthology of excellent crime/thriller/noir/etc stories be read to get it and start a wilde ride I thoroughly enjoyed it and strongly recommend it. Many thanks to Tachyon Publications for this ARC, all opinions are mine

My Review: I discovered Ronald Malfi last year, loved Black Mouth and Come with and enjoyed this collection of short stories. Ronald Malfi excels at writing novellas and short stories: they're all well plotted, tightly knitted and there a beginning and an apex of horror that keeps you on the edge. There's different type of horror and all of these stories was quite terrifying regardless of the genre. It's a good way to get to know this author. Highly recommended. Many thanks to the publisher for this ARC, all opinions are mine
The Author: Ronald Malfi is the award-winning author of several horror novels, mysteries, and thrillers, including the bestselling horror novel Come with Me. He is the recipient of two Independent Publisher Book Awards, the Beverly Hills Book Award, the Vincent Preis Horror Award, the Benjamin Franklin Award, and his novel Floating Staircase was a finalist for the Bram Stoker Award. @larryrickard and @spineless-lobster tagged me a million years ago, thank you!! <3
List 5 favourite shows (in no particular order) and answer questions accordingly.
01. The Thick of it
02. Without a Trace
03. Hap and Leonard
04. Lost
05. Yonderland
Who is your favourite character in 2?
Danny (big surprise lol)
Who is your least favourite character in 1?
It’s hard to tell bc those characters weren’t designed to be liked so uh they all suck in their own way. But in a good way you know? But uhhhhh I‘d say John Duggan I guess?
What’s your favourite episode of 4?
UHHHHHMMMM. OKAY. "Lockdown" is obviously an all-time fave but there are better eps in the later seasons like "Greatest hits", "Dr Linus" and (unpopular opinion) "The End". There are too many to choose :(
What’s your favourite season of 5?
Gotta be season 3 🫡
What’s your favourite relationship in 3?
If we‘re talking platonic then yes. Hap & Leonard. What a duo what a dynamic so well written i‘m actually going insane over them btw
What is your anti-relationship in 2?
MARTIN/SAM just LEAVE ME ALONE!!!!! (Martin/Sam/Danny though? Yes please)
How long have you watched 1?
I think i started watching this march, and i haven’t stopped since
How did you become interested in 3?
i‘ve been watching enrique’s entire filmography and. He‘s in it. And BOY am i glad bc i would’ve regretted not seeing this masterpiece of a show. (please watch it if you haven’t)
Who is your favourite actor in 4?
Michael Emerson takes it. BOY does he take it
Which show do you prefer 1, 2 or 5?
god. I‘m so sorry but i‘ll have to go with my awful copaganda show :( wat it is
Which show have you seen more episodes of, 1 or 3?
23 vs 18 episodes, and i‘ve been rewatching ttoi on loop for months, whereas i‘ve only done a partial rewatch of H&L
If you could be anyone from 4, who would you be?
Bernard or Vincent probably lol. Just chillin'
How would you kill off your favourite character in 5?
Vex? You want me to murder Vex? Okay. Killed very dramatically by Negatus (they‘re divorced your honour), the whole cliché list: dying in his arms "i always loved you" yadda yadda (sorry)
Would a 3/4 crossover work?
Honestly? It‘d be so epic. Hap & Leonard on The Island. Yes please
Pair two characters in 1 who would make an unlikely, but strangely okay couple.
*points at adam/phil* THEM!!!!!!!!!!
Overall, which show has the better cast, 3 or 5?
You‘re not making me choose here, right? RIGHT?
