May 16, 1975
On this day 49 years ago KISS performed at a sold out Cobo Hall and the show is recorded for inclusion on the album Alive!
This show is also notable as one of the only concerts they ever opened with “Rock Bottom”.
All the photos included here are from that night. The first photo is one of my favorite KISS photos ever. It puts to rest any doubt about if the back cover photo of Alive! was taken at a KISS concert or not. Check out the bottom left hand corner!

Detroit had Cobo Hall. What was cool it had a building next to it and you parked on the roof. Home to the Detroit Pistons from 1961 to 1978. Saw all of the best bands there in the late ‘70s

1972 Buick Silver Arrow III
Conceived by GM styling boss Bill Mitchell, the Silver Arrow III was a dramatic reinterpretation of the production boattail Riviera introduced in 1971.
Tumblr media
Just as the fabulous Silver Arrow I show car (read about it here) was based on the production 1963 Buick Riviera, the SIlver Arrow III was based on the production version of the third-generation boattail RIviera introduced in 1971. (There was also a Silver Arrow II based on the second-generation 1970 RIviera, but it barely saw the light of day.)  All the Silver Arrows, of course, were the creation of Bill Mitchell, the colorful boss of GM’s design studio from 1958 to 1977.
Tumblr media
Much as he did with the Silver Arrow I, Mitchell had the Silver Arrow III extensively modified to more closely resemble its original design studio counterpart (above).  The greenhouse and rear quarter panels were reworked and the roofline was lowered to produce a sleeker, more dramatic profile. (For comparison, see our feature on the production 1971 Buick Riviera here.) Other classic Mitchell touches included wire wheels, an ensemble of six rectangular halogen headlamps across the front end, and an exquisitely detailed cockpit in silver leather with bucket seats and console.
Tumblr media
Introduced at the 1972 Detroit Auto Show at Cobo Hall, the Silver Arrow III boasted a number of advanced features, including four-wheel disc brakes and Max Trac, an early form of electronic traction control that was offered on the production Riviera as well. Above the backlight at the trailing edge of the roof was a set of high-level warning lamps that also served as secondary directional indicators. Additional show-car touches included a fully chromed and detailed 455 CID Buick V8 under the hood.
When the Silver Arrow III appeared on show floor at Detroit, Chicago, and elsewhere in 1972, we’re not quite sure what the ultimate effect was, except perhaps to throw some shade on the more conservatively styled production Riviera. It is known that Mitchell was quite proud of the two Silver Arrows—here, below, he’s shown posing with the pair. Both Silver Arrow I and Silver Arrow III are still in existence today.   -Photos courtesy of General Motors.

"The Black Queen" and "the Black Queen Holds Aerial Court" by James F. Beveridge
Following this analysis post I made about the Black Queen Holds Aerial Court artworks that are up for auction at Sotheby's, I found and contacted the author on Facebook to ask him more about it, and it turned out he had no idea that his art was at Freddie's, let alone being auctioned! That's how he managed to ask Sotheby's to update the "Unknown Author" to his actual name.
He now made a post on Facebook telling the tale of these illustrations, shedding some light on them:
Well, it seems that I have had some of my art found in unexpected places but what has me rather excited is that apparently two of my fan art drawings of the band Queen have been in the possesion of Freddie Mercury since 1975.
The picture that I posted was one that I had doodled in Bic pen, a fantasy vision of the band based on Freddie's magnificent song "The March of the Black Queen" that I called "The Black Queen Holds Aerial Court" with each member of the band as her courtiers in a landscape of very vert tall unuque mushrooms, for almost obvious reasons. The difference between the picture on Sotheby's and mine is the date in blue ink in the lower left corner.
John was the Court Scholar, Roger, of course, was cast as the Court Jester with Brian as the White Knight riding a white dove and Freddie naturally, was the Court Magician. I drew that one while on a "blotter trip" as a stream of consciousness piece one day. The other picture was worked a little a little more. It was of the Black Queen as but the band was directly attending her with Freddie and Brian conjuring her a new crown.
I was, at first, a bit perplexed over as to how it ended up with Freddie. I then remembered that I was considering getting at least a copy of one of the pictures I'd done to Queen somehow at one of their concerts in Detroit. I think that it was perhaps their Cobo Hall concert but that was such a hectic time and I'd also attended their Ford Auditorium and Masonic Temple Theatre concerts prior to that big one so I wasn't positive until I dug a bit deeper into my visual memory. A friend, whose identity eludes me right now, who also attended that show mentioned that he could help to have it sent backstage to the band. So, I quickly dated and put the two pictures that I presumed were photocopies into a big brown envelope and went to the concert. It seems that the Black Queen in the Q picture that Freddie had was actually the original ink drawing. The lower right side is missing a part where I knew that it was weakend by my vigorous inking to make the Q flat black. The right edge of the Q's ink was a bit weakened from pressure and repeated lines and was going to separate sometime. I thought that it too was a photocopy but apparently in my rush I neglected to grab that one. I was a bit disappointed in myself that it wasn't the photocopy but I shrugged my shoulders, hoped they liked it and went on to draw new work.
Here now for the first time that I've posted this old 1975 oil painting that never made it to the band but hopefull might see it here. It is also the same characterization I was developing of Freddie's lady, my "Moonlight Flight of the Black Queen with her Blue Powder Monkeys" I'm also including my photo of the Aerial court drawing.

Cobo Hall - detroit, mighigan
KIϟϟ filmed ‘Animalize Live Uncensored’ at Cobo Hall in Detroit 39 years ago today.
Bruce became an official member of KIϟϟ on this day.
The tour featured perhaps the most varied setlist KIϟϟ has ever played, featuring songs from seven of the band's studio releases up to that point. Three songs from Animalize were played, and many of the band's more popular songs were performed. As suggested by its title, 'Animalize Live Uncensored' features plenty of profane onstage banter from Paul.
KIϟϟ filmed this show for a special edited broadcast on MTV on January 26, 1985. A modified version was released the following year as their "Animalize Live Uncensored" video. The show was also broadcast live on radio.
A brief mention in the Dec. 6 issue of the Detroit Free Press mentioned that Radio station WLLZ-FM would be picking four listeners, through a random drawing, for bit parts in the band's planned video filming at the show.
